ou have arrived! You've been counting down the minutes to \RXU GUHDP YDFDWLRQ DQG \RX FDQ Ć“QDOO\ EUHDWKH D VLJK RI UHOLHIDIWHUDORQJMRXUQH\b1RZGURS\RXUOXJJDJHWRVVWKLV magazine into your beach bag, and go catch that Curaçao sunset HYHU\RQHUDYHVDERXW)HHOWKHVHDEUHH]HDV\RXUHOD[DQGXQZLQGRQD EHDFKFKDLUVLSSLQJRQ\RXUIDYRULWHWURSLFDOFRFNWDLO I always love chatting with tourists that are visiting Curaçao for the first time or for the tenth time because there’s always something new to reveal about the many special events and experiences on this lovely island. Once a visitor myself, I fell in love with Curaçao over a decade ago and just kept coming back to visit this island paradise. With each visit, my love affair with the island grew stronger and stronger until my family and I decided to take the plunge and move here from Canada. Through the years, I have been sharing my countless stories and secrets about this hidden gem with so many tourists, but now that I’m a resident, my attachment to this island also carries a responsibility to share a deeper message: "There are no bad tourists, just uninformed travelers."b 7KLV LV D VWDWHPHQW WKDW PRWLYDWHV UHVSRQVLEOH WRXULVP WR provide information and implement awareness to travelers all over the world. At the heart of this island, with nature that is largely protected both above and below the sea, visitors can discover a little-known biodiversity located right before their eyes. Exploring from the east to the west of Curaçao, I cannot help but acknowledge the importance of sustainable ecotourism in less developed parts of the world, and I applaud volunteers, dive operators and non-profit organizations who devote their time to this cause. They passionately collaborate with clean-up operations and do their utmost to protect wildlife and marine life whilst educating both the young and old, in a fun and educational way, through a multitude of activities. One example: Curaçao’s community-based ecosystem preservation projects are regenerating missing or damaged coral by creating coral nurseries, restoring broken corals and FUHDWLQJFRUDOWUDQVSODQWDWLRQV PRUHRQS b We can’t deny the clear shift in global sentiment towards caring for our planet, and Curaçao is no stranger to this movement as an active player in so many restoration and clean-up projects in the region. We see the value in our beautiful nature and recognize its importance to our mere survival. Thanks to the development of responsible tourism and pioneering projects in Curaçao, we hope that these initiatives will impact and strengthen awareness on a global level, bridging Curaçao with people across the seas and borders. For this reason, and in celebration of the global movement towards environmental awareness, this issue of Events Curaçao was aptly named the “20/20 Vision Edition.â€? Yours truly,

Christoffel Park

Shete Boka Park

CARMABI’s largest nature reserve is Christoffel Park. With 2,200 hectares of unspoiled terrain, it is Curaçao’s foremost nature park and is home to Mt. Christoffel and the Savonet Museum. There’s something for everyone in the family, whether it’s a relaxing stroll through any of the 8 scenic hiking trails or a more challenging hike to the top of Christoffel mountain. The mountain is open for climbing from 6:00am – 10:00am. We recommend you take this challenge early in the morning to capture the sunrise and before the heat kicks in. There are also scenic car routes throughout the park offering stunning vistas of the windswept hills on the northern coast, and beautiful inland wooded areas offering a closer look at some of the wildlife. Join a deer spotting tour to see if you can spot the elusive Curaçao white-tailed deer, or a birdwatching tour where, if you’re lucky, you can observe the rare native barn owl. During the rainy months, you can encounter natural springs cascading down the mountainside with wild orchids coming into bloom on one of CARMABI’s guided park tours or join them on an occasional full moon walk. You can also check out the Savonet museum, situated in one of the island’s oldest and most beautifully preserved plantation houses featuring an extensive display of artifacts that portray Curaçao’s rich history and the history of this plantation.

As you venture further west nearing the westernmost tip of the LVODQG\RXZLOOĆ“QG6KHWH%RND3DUNRQWKHZLOGQRUWKHUQFRDVW<RXU exploration begins at Boka Tabla, where the power of the ocean collides with the rugged terrain as you experience the deafening roar of the sea crashing into an underground cave. Then as you ascend to the cliffs above, take a moment to capture the impressive view and nature's force all around you. As you head along the coastline further into the park, with the waves crashing into the cliffs spraying a majestic white tower high above, you will discover a natural bridge carved out of the limestone by the pounding surf.

A short walk along the rugged north coast will bring you back to Boka Tabla. Be sure to stop off at the +DWR&DYHV on your adventure out west. These caves are over 300,000 years old, and as the largest caves on the island, they are visitor friendly, fully paved and well lit. Let your imagination run wild with the intriguing geological formations of stalagmites and stalactites in the famous “Fantasy Room” deep inside the caves. District Revival & Street Art Street Art Skalo is an initiative undertaken by a group of creatives working in the Scharloo area who all earn a living with their creativity. They believe that art is business and that the creative sector on the island should be taken more seriously. The creative industry is an important one, but one that is often underestimated.

You can weave through the narrow streets of Skalo, pointing out to the many walls where talented artists express themselves with vibrant murals such as the Romanesque painting by Francis Sling on Bitterstraat. Street Art in Otrobanda Only a half dozen years ago, street art and wall murals were just beginning to emerge in the city of Willemstad. Today, festivals are held celebrating the diverse and decorated buildings in Otrobanda and Punda. Walking tours are available in the capital city, but if you want to venture down the alleys of Otrobanda and discover the famed artwork for yourself, I suggest you begin at the top of the Havenstraat near Theatro Luna Blou. As the street rounds the corner, you’ll notice the large mural of a rooster painted on the face of the blue building. From there, the colorful steps welcoming you to the

I am Canadian, but Curaรงao has been my home away from home for many years. During this time, I had wonderful opportunities to dig into island life with my family and friends to explore the treasures of Curaรงao. We had so many amazing experiences together on the island, but several activities have stood out as โ€˜must doโ€™ recommendations to visitors-

Tourism and SeĂş

The SeĂş parade is one of the easiest ways to celebrate Curaçao’s culture, and the local population welcomes people from all nationalities to partake. Deborah Lantveld, a Surinamese woman that moved to Curaçao two years ago, decided to join a SeĂş group to immerse herself completely in the experience. According to Deborah, it’s important for foreigners who live on the island to experience this at least once. “I had

According to Lionel Jansen, the president of Fundashon Kultural Kòrsou, "Many tourists are interested in the history of our country and want to experience the uniqueness of WKH6HÂźFHOHEUDWLRQĆ“UVWKDQGĹ?

There are also several events and competitions associated with SeĂş, like the Reina di SeĂş pageant and the KantadĂł Mayo song festival, where the winning song leads the SeĂş parade. This year’s winner, Sharrel ‘Adjatay’ Denisia, sang Na Pia Mes speaking about the resilience of the Curaçao people and that need to press on to achieve greatness. For the past few years, there has been a wave of fresh talent being introduced to the SeĂş celebrations, attracting lots of young people. Jansen emphasizes that young people need to develop a deeper appreciation for the essence of SeĂş.

Adam Levine of Maroon 5 shook his hips like Jagger and belted out popular hits like ‘She will be loved’ and ‘Girls like you’, keeping the Curacao North Sea Jazz attendants on its feet. The popular alternative rock band has sold over 20 million albums, which resulted in three well-deserved Grammy Awards and an impressive performance during the 2019 Super bowl.

Day 3 $XJXVWVW This incredible evening showcased some musical powerhouses like jazz legend David 6DQERUQ on his saxophone and reggae legends 7KLUG :RUOG, who kicked off the third day of the festival. Their unique reggae fusion that fuses soul, funk, and disco produced unforgettable anthems like "Now That We Found Love". Then one of the most anticipated performances of the festival, superstar Mariah Carey, took the stage. Coral Restoration Outplanting Site

The observation that coral reefs are declining worldwide has resulted in a myriad of protective measures to reduce the effects of land-based pollutants and to curb over-harvesting. These efforts enhance coral reefs’ ability to withstand the detrimental effects of climate change which generally cannot be dealt with at a local level. In the Caribbean, the reefs of Curaçao stand a good chance of surviving once such protective measures are employed locally. This is currently ongoing, and several organizations, such as the &XUDŠDR'LYH7DVN)RUFH, the &RUDO5HVWRUDWLRQ)RXQGDWLRQ&XUDŠDR and 6HD7XUWOH&RQVHUYDWLRQ Curaçao to name a few, work with other stakeholders to achieve this goal.

The Coral Restoration Foundation Curaçao chose Director’s Bay as an outplanting location because it offers much-needed protection for the coral structures and a regular flow of nutrients brought in by the southeasterly currents. CRF Curaçao has successfully outplanted over 6000 corals at various popular dive sites along Curaçao’s southeastern coastline which includes several outplanting structures at Director’s Bay. The Coral Restoration Foundation Curaçao, originally founded in May 2015 by 2FHDQ(QFRXQWHUV Diving, has branched out and expanded the nurseries with the assistance of Scubaçao, a CRF Curaçao affiliate member. It also currently maintains 50 coral trees across the island. These coral trees currently located at LionsDive Beach Resort, Baoase Luxury Resort and Avila Beach Resort grow fragments of critically endangered coral species. Once these fragments are mature enough, they are outplanted to different sites around Curaçao. The outplanted coral clusters not only improve the health of the reefs but also increase fish populations in the area. In doing so, they can now provide triple the number of coral fragments available to be outplanted back onto Curaçao’s fringing reefs.

For many islands, the realization of the need to act has come too late, and reef systems have collapsed. The result has been losses in tourism and fishing revenue, floods, and deteriorated water quality which has led to waterborne diseases that affect human health. None of that has happened on Curaçao, and as such, the island’s reefs remain amongst the best in the Caribbean region.

According to Pol Bosch of CRF Curaçao, “The significance of the Curaçao Reef Restoration Program is that together as a community here on Curaçao, we will be restoring our shallow water reef system while educating our youth about the importance of protecting and preserving our natural ecosystem.â€? Bosch adds, “I believe programs like this help solidify a natural sustainability for future generations.â€?

Project AWARE • Adopt A Dive Site

Sea Turtle Conservation Curaçao (STCC)

"The Adopt-a-Dive Site initiative is a community-driven effort in which individual divers and dive centers join together for a greater cause of keeping Curaçao's reefs clean. Dive Against Debris is not just a PADI specialty, it is a lifestyle in which divers collectively work together to eliminate debris from each of our adopt-a-dive sites which in turn creates an impact on a large scale. I am honored to dive with the purpose of helping keep Curaçao's reefs clean", says Ivana Stampeggi, PADI Master Instructor at %OXH %D\ 'LYH DQG :DWHUVSRUWV.

Sea turtles are a long-lived species that reach sexual maturity after 20-30 years of age and migrate great distances at different stages of their lives. These unique life history features necessitate international cooperation and long-term monitoring programs to best understand and safeguard these endangered species.

The Curaçao Hospitality and Tourism Association’s (CHATA) Dive 7DVN)RUFH in collaboration with the 3URMHFW$:$5()RXQGDWLRQ is committed to the $GRSWD'LYH6LWH™ initiative. With 14 adopted reefs around Curaçao, this group has pledged to conduct monthly Dive Against Debris™ beach and dive site cleanups. Today, this program has grown to fourteen diving operations that are investing in Curaçao’s future. Now, Dive Against Debris™ events span from Director’s Bay to Playa Kalki in Westpunt. Once amazingly abundant, Caribbean sea turtles have seen a rapid decline in numbers since the time of European expansion in the Americas. Hawksbills, as an example, have plunged 99.7% from 11 million to 30,000. Curaçao is very fortunate that both green turtles and hawksbills return annually to nest at a variety of beaches across the island including Klein Curaçao and Playa Kalki. The main objectives of STCC Foundation revolve around their mandated 3 Pillars of Success which incorporate research, conservation and education. The goal of these 3 fundamental pillars is to influence and support local as well as international decisionmaking to achieve effective sea turtle conservation, thereby ensuring sustainability. Additionally, STCC works to increase local support for sea turtle and marine conservation through public awareness activities and leads by example through organizing beach cleanups.

As we head out of the harbor of St. Anna Bay on this glorious morning, Dutch recounts the story of this vessel, formerly known as the NOAAS Chapman, an $PHULFDQĆ“VKHULHVUHVHDUFKYHVVHOWKDWVDLOHGLQWKH1DWLRQDO2FHDQLF DQG$WPRVSKHULF$GPLQLVWUDWLRQĹ´HHWIURP,QWKH vessel was donated to the University of Puerto Rico continuing to VXSSRUWVFLHQWLĆ“FPDULQHUHVHDUFKVDLOLQJIRUVL[\HDUV,QDIWHU years of minimal use, Substation Curaçao purchased the neglected NOAAS Chapman to bring it back to life. It took Dutch and his team 4 years to rebuild the boat turning it into a submarine tender. “This mothership for the deep-diving state-of-the-art manned submersible, the Curasub was also designed to be an expedition research vesselâ€? declares Dutch. The RV Chapman comes equipped with wet and dry laboratories, a full kitchen, dining area and comfortable cabins for up to ten guests seeking new experiences or interested in deep reef research exploration on a liveaboard. Let the adventure begin! The boat trip is pleasant as we cut through the light surf and approach Klein Curaçao. A lighthouse on a strip of sand shimmers at a distance. As soon as we arrive, three anchors (placed so as not to harm the coral) are attached to the Chapman. I am in awe admiring both the stunning 360° view and the crew working in unison to stabilize the boat. The clear water surrounding us is calm, the island is just a few breaststrokes away, and we will be here for the next 4 fabulous days!

With a skip in their step, (and in mine too!) the crew begins a system FKHFNRIWKHVXEPDULQHSURSHOOHUVPHFKDQLVPVĆ“OWHUVDQGWKHQHZHVW addition: a vaccum hose to collect specimens into a container. Now UHDG\WREHXQEROWHGDQGVWUDSVKRRNHGWRWKHĹ´RDWLQJODXQFKSODWIRUP it is carefully lifted by crane and placed on the water behind the stern. Within minutes, the straps are secured to the Curasub and hooked to the crane operated by Dutch who asserts: "Now that’s how its done!" as he eases the sub onto the platform with the crew assisting a smooth transfer. The mission for this expedition: to collect new species that live at a depth of 200 feet and as deep as 1000 feet! Without missing a beat, Dutch and two sub technicians take turns stepping on the sub’s bridge to slide down an opening into a 4-passenger chamber. Looking out through a porthole into the blue, they begin their descent communicating each step of the way with one of the sub operators who tracks their trajectory and follows with a smaller tender. Seven hours later, they excitedly share that WKH\ FROOHFWHG VHYHUDO %XWWHUĹ´\Ć“VK D IHZ$SULFRW EDVV DQG PDQ\ 6OLW VKHOOV IRXQG URXJKO\ DW IHHW %XW KHUH LV WKH WKLQJ ĹŠ Ć“VK QHHG to decompress just like humans do! The food truck scene has long since been a fundamental part of Curaçao’s society before its recent growth in popularity in the US. Late at night, food trucks appear as if out of nowhere, creating a lively and bustling atmosphere on the streets as partygoers seek their delicious treats after the festivities. So lively and so dominant has this food truck scene become, that it has transformed into a nightlife destination in and of itself.
