Day 1-2-3!

Ready to start your day energized?

It’s your most important meal of the day. Jump start your morning with a buffet and a stunning view of the sea at Hemingway Beach Side Grill and Bar, located at the Sea Aquarium Beach. You can take a seat at the restaurant or nestle on a beach bed just steps away. The buzz of daily activity – divers entering on the shore and boats occasionally cruising by – may inspire you to sign up for dive lessons, or you may opt to happily do absolutely nothing on your first day in Curaçao but sun-bathe on beach beds, enjoy refreshments and sign-up for a beach massage. Just steps away, Mambo Beach Boulevard is filled with bars, shops and restaurants on two levels. You can buy a new bikini, find unique souvenirs or even get a tattoo while admiring the magnificent view. The BLVD has you covered.

14 events curaçao

The atmosphere is chill during the day and dazzles on most nights with live bands, DJs and a great ambiance. Looking forward to a quiet first day in Curaçao? Take a little turn to the West side of the island. Westpunt (Westpoint) consists of wonderful green hills, unique flora and fauna and some of the most amazing beaches in the world. The moment you hit the road on your way to the West, peacefulness settles upon you. Playa Porto Mari is loved because of its clear blue water where you can spot the most colorful creations in the sea. On your way to Playa Port Mari, you’ll have a very good chance of spotting flamingos, so make sure to have your camera ready. A bit further down lies Cas Abou, a beach straight out of your dreams. This is the place where you’ll forget about the rest of the world, letting the sea work its magic on you.

If you’re looking for more privacy, the beaches at San Juan might be the answer. Especially during the week, the small beaches in this area are often deserted. Just a little drive through the hills, and the four idyllic beaches are located right next to each other. Almost at the very end of the island you can find Playa Kenepa or Knip Beach. When looking down at the bay from the parking lot, it’s almost surreal. But you can blink as many times as you want, the slamming image you see is very real! Playa Forti is the last beach you’ll see at the western tip of the island. The beach is popular for cliff diving and relaxing. The rocks, white sand and blue sea make this a very striking and unique beach to visit.

Ready to get to know the island? A stroll in downtown Willemstad will surely give you a good impression of its rich history. The Handelskade in Punda is a familiar picture. The colorful strip of small buildings welcomes you at Anna Bay as you walk over the pontoon bridge, also known as the Swinging Old Lady, to cross over to Otrobanda, which in fact means other side. Several walking tours lead the way to see the island from this unique perspective. Simply put, Curaçao was virtually designed for walking. But before heading to the other side, refer to the Museum Listing on p.45 to see which museums you would like to visit in Punda and Otrobanda. You can visit Emanuel Mikve Israel Synagogue which was consecrated in 1732, and is still one of the most historic synagogues in the world. The Jewish museum showcases very precious religious and cultural artifacts that have been preserved on the island. Since Curaçao is an island, it’s only natural that the sea has always played an important role in daily life. You can get a glimpse of the nautical history of the island at the Curacao Maritime Museum. Over 500 years of maritime history is documented via nautical charts, ship models and navigation equipment combined with audiovisual presentations.

As you stroll through the pedestrian streets of Punda, you can buy souvenirs and spoil yourself with some fine jewelry too. The streets are filled with retail and local shops for all budgets. Stylish imported brands can be found in stores right next to local shops with fine art and souvenirs. Don’t spend too much time shopping though, because there is more to do!

standing today) to protect Curaçao from privateers and pirates, and the evermenacing presence of the British and French forces in the Caribbean. Today the Rif Fort, for example, welcomes everyone to shop, eat and be entertained as it stands witness to a by-gone era. Visit the different forts and experience living history first-hand. See more about forts on p.46.

On the other side, the Kura Hulanda Museum in Otrobanda is informative as well as fun. The area around the museum consists of little alleys with striking architecture and colors. The museum shows the total process of the Atlantic slave trade in an approachable and interesting way: from the moment the slaves were captured in Africa, to their transportation and resettlement in Curaçao. It also illustrates how African, Dutch, South American and Caribbean influences contributed to Curaçao’s vibrant culture.

Curaçao is the place where exploration and relaxation meet – you will always find a way to enjoy a cocktail, lunch or dinner and live music too! Foodies can indulge to their heart's content in Curaçao (Culinary Editorial and Restaurant Listing: p.72). Jazz, rock, salsa and even Cuban tango are frequently heard in bars in Pietermaai. (See more about Nightlife on p.66)

Curaçao’s landscape is composed of hundreds of striking monuments, ancient forts and colorful colonial architecture. The Dutch took possession of Curaçao in 1634, recognizing the island’s strategic potential. Between 1634 and1828, eight forts were erected (six of which are still

Restaurants and bars in the Pietermaai district are fairly new: the area was in serious decay until people with vision invested in its development, resulting in one of the most glorious parts of the island. A stroll during the day, will show you wonderful glimpses of the sea and striking architecture.

Ready for a little adventure? A boat trip is an ideal way to see Curaçao from another perspective. If you’re lucky you might even spot dolphins along the way! A sunset trip over the Spanish Water is a romantic way to explore Curaçao. Or, if you’re in for a day trip, Klein Curaçao (meaning Little Curaçao) is your answer. As you approach the coast, you’ll spot the white sand welcoming you as you get ready to dive into the water. This magnificent day will be about spotting turtles, tanning and taking barefoot strolls. (See story on p.48.) The Pelican Express also offers fun boat day trips, particularly one to the Blue Room. After a short ride along the stunning coast, you will spot a cave at sea level beneath a big cliff. Inside dwells the Blue Room. Once you swim or snorkel into it, the crystal-clear water reveals plenty of fish and coral. It feels like you are swimming inside an aquarium! Watersports For the sportier types among us, surfing, kite-surfing, wind-surfing, stand-up paddle boarding or diving are widely offered all over the island. Kayaking is also a great way to discover Curaçao. You can either rent a kayak yourself or join a tour. At Piscadera Bay,

18 events CURAÇAO

you can easily explore the area where mangroves are growing again with the help of a local kayaker who has been replanting them for years. This area has become very green, as birds and other animals have made their homes in this bay. The inland waterway at Spanish Water is also one of the best places for water sports. With a kayak you can explore the hidden islands in the lagoon with views of the famous Tafelberg, Kabrietenberg or Seru Boca. This area is also great for SUPing. Several tours lead the way to the great flora and fauna of the Spanish Water. Up for some yoga? We’ve got a challenge for you: yoga on a paddle board with Dushi SUP. This experience will definitely leave you balanced! See p.62. Still not adventurous enough? Not afraid of a little mud and dirt? With a buggy, you can drive along the rough North Coast of Curaçao through hills and desert-like landscape, but also (depending on the time of the year) mud and dirt. The views, flora and fauna are unique and can’t be compared to the rest of the island. Big waves crashing against the rocks at Boka Tabla create a raw and energizing scene which is unexpected and stunning. This ride is absolutely worth doing some extra laundry!

4th edition Plein Air Curaรงao International Art festival

In 2011, Art Foundation Curaçao brought the first International Plein Air Art Festival to the Caribbean. Every other year, artists from around the world travel to this beautiful and colorful tropical island to participate in this ten day festival. After three successful festivals, the 4th International Plein Air Curaçao Festival took place from March 9th to the 18th, 2017. Very talented local and international Plein Air artists captured our people in portraits, our historical buildings, and the beauty and culture of Curaçao with oils, watercolor, pastels and other media. This technique of going on a painting expedition and completing a painting in one session has its roots in 19th century France. This was the beginning of a new trend, Impressionism, whereby painters worked on location, painting what they saw. Hence the French term En Plein Air literally means, in the open air. The open air can be any place outdoors, in the street, in a park or in the countryside. The term accentuates the unlimited and often natural character of the location. All over Curaçao, from East to West, on land, underwater and from the sky, Plein Air painters had opportunities to capture the island’s beauty from different angles. A unique experience for painters and viewers alike.

Local and international artists painted together at some very high locations in the open air for one week. Some of these locations were the Tafelberg which is 240m high and the Juliana bridge, which reaches a height of 56.4m above the water at its apex. During the festival, paintings could be viewed and bought at our gallery at the Hanchi Snoa 27. Other special activities are the Plein Air Painting in the Moonlight session and ‘Plein Eau’ (underwater painting). The Plein Air participants painted off the coast from a boat, while the Plein Eau artists snorkeled and dived and painted underwater. A variety of workshops were offered during the Plein Air Curaçao Festival ranging from beginner and teen classes to masterclasses for the seasoned painters.

One of the highlights of the festival was the paint-out competition and social activities in Wilhelmina Park in Punda on the final day of the festival. During the competition, artists painted in the historic capital city of Willemstad, which has been named as one of the world’s most colorful cities. It has also been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site – one of only a handful of Caribbean cities chosen. Four categories of painters showcased their artistic excellence while competing for the category prizes; Paint-Out International Artist, Paint-Out Local Artist, Teens/Young Adults (13-24) and Newcomers (24+). The next Plein Air Curaçao Festival will be held from March 14 to 23, 2019. For our 5th anniversary, expect something BIG! Everyone is invited to join us and experience this unique art festival. CURAÇAO 27

In the early days of the festival in Holland, Carnival celebrations were conservative and held indoors, hats were worn, traditional symbols were honored, and the festivities were fuelled by copious amounts of alcohol. Today in Curaçao, the first float that leads the Carnival Parade each year pays homage to this Dutch Carnival heritage, this group is easy to recognize with their goat mascot, customary Dutch Carnival costumes and traditional folk music. The years passed, and many communities in Curaçao were invited to participate in this Dutch celebration. As the party transitioned outdoors, local influence gained traction and stimulated its evolution, including the adoption of local Tumba music as the musical genre for the Carnival Parade. Inspired by local creativity, Latin American trends and by other cultures from around the world, the Carnival costumes radically changed. 28 events curaçao

To this day, the Curaçao Carnival continues to evolve, the groups are growing and their creative presentations get more spectacular and impressive each year.

Meet the Local Characters

John Schults, a 10-year Carnival Parade veteran, recalls the first time he saw the parade; the creativity, the colors and the atmosphere made an impression on him. In contrast to Carnival in Holland, it was dramatically different. He was captivated by the participants’ imagination, in particular, a costume completely made from peanut shells and glitter! John tells a story of a large cruise liner that stayed in port late one year because the passengers were ashore enjoying the Carnival Parade. They were happily dancing and celebrating in the streets and had such a great time that they were late returning to the ship! This memory stands out in John’s mind as one of the best evenings he's ever had.

Costume Comes Alive

From idea, to conception, to the big day – it takes a full year to prepare for Carnival. The pace picks up in September and continues right through to Carnival season. Participants work hard to create and finish their elaborate costumes on time. Often people get little sleep the night before the Grand Parade as Carnival face and body makeup can take all night to complete, especially for larger groups that can have hundreds of dancers to prepare.

Cultural Legacy

The participants that join the Carnival each year, whether individuals or larger groups, agree that it is crucial to continue to invest in this important aspect of Curaçao’s culture. For John, it does not have to be expensive to be impressive. Every year, he unleashes his imagination and creates something amazing on a very tight budget.

Tips for First Timers

Planning to attend the Grand Procession on Sunday afternoon? Plan ahead and buy tickets for a stand that provides shade and toilet facilities – making your experience more comfortable and enjoyable. Everyone is very friendly and the locals love to share their enthusiasm with everyone as the parade passes. Whether you are a spectator or a participant, there are no strangers here! If you are coming to watch Carnival for the first time, the Night Parade on Tuesday is a good option. In the cool of the evening, this parade moves faster and has a magical quality as the dancers sparkle with lights. Being the last night of the parade, the participants tend to be more playful and enthusiastic.

As a visitor to the island, with a little preparation, you can participate in the Carnival. By submitting your payment and measurements some months in advance, your costume will be made for you and you can participate like a local! If you are interested please contact Carnival organizers in late August to submit your measurements. Today, the Curaçao Carnival embraces everyone. If you look closely at the dancers, you will see folks from all over the world – interns from Holland, expats from the USA and Canada, visitors from Austria and even further afield like Norway and Australia – it truly is an international event. By experiencing this special festival you will create powerful memories to last a lifetime!

On the Carnival parade days, many roads are closed. Keep this in mind as you plan island tours and airport transfers! For information or to participate Visit www.curacaocarnival.info

IRMA Relief Benefiet in Rotterdam, the Netherlands held on October 12th, 2017. photo by Ivaylo Donchev

WILLEMSTAD/ PHILIPSBURG by Deya Mensche Last September, hurricanes Irma and Maria, two of the most devastating storms ever measured in the Atlantic Ocean, passed with deadly force along the Windward Islands in the Caribbean. Particularly affected were Barbuda, Dominica, Puerto Rico, in addition to our sister island St. Maarten/Saint Martin. For decades, St. Maarten has been a leader in the Caribbean tourism industry, so we, at Events Curaรงao, want to take this opportunity to reflect upon this tragedy, yet we also want to highlight the resilience of the people. For the past few months, they have worked tirelessly to rebuild their beautiful island nation and welcome tourists back to their favorite destinations. The first priority for the Dutch and French governments of St. Maarten/Saint Martin was to provide aid to the affected and to clear debris in the waters and lagoons to avoid hygiene and physical problems for its citizens. Additionally, as part of reconstruction efforts, the airport and ports were quickly reopened. It is estimated that the storms caused collective damage of a few billion guilders and left some islands looking like war zones. Although the sister islands of Saba and St. Eustatius were also somewhat affected by the hurricanes, they were spared the brunt of the devastation.

30 events curaรงao

President Macron of France paid a visit to Saint Martin to asses the situation. Willem Alexander, the King of the Netherlands, also visited St. Maarten, Saba and St. Eustatius, to assure the people that the Dutch Kingdom would remain supportive and to not get discouraged during the difficult period of reconstruction. In the aftermath of the storms, the Dutch and French governments have made millions of euros available in aid and funds to rebuild the infrastructure that was almost completely destroyed. The neighboring and international communities also jumped in to send first responders and to organize fundraisers to help the affected. Specifically entertainers and artists in the Netherlands, Florida and Curaรงao, came together to raise funds for these relief efforts. The people of St. Maarten are resilient and have quickly communicated to the world that they will rebuild their nation and infrastructure and return stronger than ever as a breathtaking touristic destination.

For more information about how to help St. Maarten, please visit www.sxmemergency.org or the hashtag #sxmstrong.

Curaçao Treasures

Although Dutch is the official language and English and Spanish are widely spoken, a mix of Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, French, English, African and Arawak Indian – called Papiamento – is also heard on the Dutch islands of Curaçao, Aruba and Bonaire. One of just a few Creole languages that have survived to the present day, Papiamento is based on words in the Spanish and Portuguese dictionaries. Derived from the Spanish papear or to speak, historians believe Papiamentooriginated in the 17th century as a means of

communication between West African slaves and their Portuguese masters. Today, Papiamento is spoken by virtually everyone in the Dutch Caribbean and while various nations have governed Curaçao over the years, Papiamento remains the favored language of locals. Visitors who speak or understand Spanish, French or Dutch, are able to quickly learn a few phrases in Papiamento like kon ta bo number which means ‘what’s your name’, mi ta bai bon, danki which translates to a simple ‘I am fine, thank you’ and the word dushi which you’d use to grab the attention of your sweetie. Linguistic scholars believe islanders have an instinctive flair for languages as words and phrases from four or five different languages are often heard in one conversation. Taxi drivers, tour guides and hotel staff are pleased to teach their guests a few phrases while tourists with savoir-faire enjoy reading the island newspaper in Papiamento.

When you arrive at the Curaçao International Airport, you’re greeted, not only by the warm breeze and friendly smiles, but also with a sign that says Bon Bini or Welcome in the local language, Papiamento. Revered for its sandy beaches and cosmopolitan flair, what also makes Curaçao unique are the many languages spoken by islanders.

Calabash

Island Secret Look around the luscious greenery of Curaçao’s plantations and your eyes are bound to land upon a Calabash tree. Usually not more than 25 feet tall, this multiple trunk, branch-twisting tree has beautiful light green elliptical leaves. It blooms in the tropics from May to January, revealing stunning, large, bell-shaped flowers, of green and yellow hues, with purple accents. These showy flowers grow, unlike most trees that we are familiar with, directly on the branches or trunk of the tree. Also found on this tree is one of Curaçao’s best-kept tropical secrets: the Calabash fruit. But, if you’re thinking that you may have eaten a slice of Calabash this morning at the resort’s breakfast buffet, you are greatly mistaken! The Calabash fruit takes an extraordinary seven months to ripen and it is not eaten by locals; rather, it is regarded by most islanders as a mystical treasure to be revered. Common Uses The Calabash tree itself, is of great utility. Its fibers can be twisted into twine and ropes, and its hard wood made into tools and tool handles. The split wood can be woven for sturdy baskets. The Calabash fruit is a completely sealed and self-contained sphere, usually about 10 inches in diameter. Its shell is so hard that it must be cracked open. The inside of the fruit is made up of tiny black seeds, and no edible flesh. One of the first cultivated plants in the world, the most obvious use of the Calabash is as a container. By emptying the seeds and hollowing the fruit, the dried casing serves as a large bowl. In Mexico, they are used as canteens to carry water. In parts of South America, Calabash gourds are dried and carved into mates, the traditional container for the popular caffeinated tea-like drink brewed from the Yerba Mate plant.

24 events curaçao 36

In other cultures, the Calabash is used as a musical instrument, ranging from lutes to fiddles and rattles. Sometimes, large calabashes are simply hollowed, dried and used as percussion instruments such as maracas. The seeds of the Calabash are edible and high in protein with a licoricelike, sweet taste. They can be toasted and ground with other ingredients such as rice and cinnamon to make the popular South-American drink, horchata. Mystery of the Calabash Beneath the hard-shell exterior of the Calabash lies untold tales of historical and mystical dimensions. Historically, we can trace the fruit back to the days of the Mayan civilization, where the fruit served as the warrior’s and hunter’s helmet. The fruit also played an important role in the book of myths of the Mayan culture. Legend has it that two famous twin warriors were killed in a ball game and then had their skulls hung in the Calabash tree by the demonic Xibalban army. Some blame this myth for the resemblance of the fruit to skulls. The Calabash also possesses valuable medicinal properties. The influence of Suriname’s traditional medicine, which carries centuries of indigenous knowledge from the great Amazon forest, is widespread in the Dutch Antilles. Calabash counts among 1000 other fruits and herbs in the Amazon that provide natural healing and cures to common ailments. In particular, the fruit pulp of the Calabash is used for respiratory problems such as asthma, colds and bronchitis. The leaves of the Calabash are also used to treat hypertension.

Aloe Vera

Tropical Healer

3 components of the aloe plant: The rind: the skin of the leaf which is usually spiny and somewhat rubbery to the touch. The mucilage gel: the thick clear gel The sap: a yellowish, sticky bitter liquid that coats the gel on the inside of the leaf.

Curaçao Ecocity Projects NV started developing a plantation farm in December 1999 that covers an area of ten acres, five of which are used to cultivate more than 100,000 specimens. It takes 2 years for an aloe vera plant to mature and be harvested that can take up to 10 years. Revered for its medicinal properties for over 3500 years, the aloe vera was introduced to the Caribbean and continues to grow locally. It looks like a spiny weed, resembling a cactus plant but is actually a member of the lily family, staying moist by closing its pores to prevent moisture loss where other lily plants normally wither and die. Aloe vera is extremely nutrient-rich; just one leaf contains almost 200 compounds including: 20 minerals, 18 amino acids and 12 vitamins. It has a whole host of medicinal uses, best known

for soothing sunburns and heal abrasions. You can snip a leaf off the home-grown aloe vera plant, cut through it to release the gel, and squirt some on to cuts or burns. Aloe contains Lignin, a component of aloe that actually helps other nutrients in topical creams and gels penetrate the skin. Aloe is antiseptic. 3% of aloe vera gel is composed of saponins, soapy substances that cleanse and have antiseptic properties. Aloe is anti-inflammatory. Aloe vera contains salicylic acid, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties which are effective in the fight to reduce acne. Aloe has enzymes. It helps reduce excessive inflammation and consequently, reduces pain. Aloe vera has been called the “plant of immortality”, the “natural healer”, and the “wand of heaven”.

Blue Brilliance Tropical Bliss

Never has a liqueur exemplified its place of origin as Curaçao Liqueur. As colorful as sunlit gems of green, red, orange and blue, the liqueur is suspended in beautiful hand-blown bottles. Their textured, rounded exteriors are made to represent the bitter and essentially inedible Valencia oranges brought over to Curaçao by the Spanish. Over 100 years ago the Spaniards made an accidental but abundantly fruitful discovery when they brought their sweet and juicy Valencia oranges to the island. Unable to flourish because of the difference in climate, the sweet Valencia orange blossomed into the sour Lahara orange. The peel of these Lahara oranges contain aromatic oils which, when combined with exotic spices, result in the creation of a liqueur of international appeal – enjoyed by millions, the world over. The early 19th century country estate, purchased by N.V. Senior and Company in 1947 is where the original Curaçao Liqueur was made, and is now considered a protected monument by the Curaçao government. This mansion is called, Landhuis Chobolobo, and on its premises is the distillery of Curaçao Liqueur.

38 events curaçao

After the green, unripened fruit (ripening makes the peels too thin for the process) is picked off the three meter tall trees, wooden knives are used to slice the peels off the Lahara in four roughly triangular sections to be subsequently dried for five days in the sun. It cannot, under any conditions, become wet. Curaçao Liqueur is the only distillery using this process. From the plantation, on the eastern part of the island, peels are obtained from just 45 trees, each yielding 150-200 fruits, resulting in 25-35 kilos of dried peels on a twiceannual basis. The evenly-weighed, dried Lahara peels are then mixed with the secret spice recipe and added to a kettle filled with water, which is then distilled at a constant temperature of 250 degrees Celsius for three days. As soon as the liqueur is clear, it can be colored, flavored, and then manually bottled. The hand-made, colorful and flavorful batches made in this old copper kettle could not be more representative of the beauty, colors and eclectic culture of Curaçao itself. The Savonet Museum - one of the oldest plantation houses on the island. Serves as the entry point to the Christoffel Nationa Park. It is now the visitor center and home to the new Museum of Natural and Cultural History. For a small price you can purchase a guidebook of the park’s geological, botanical, and zoological features as well as off-the-beaten path roads and other attractions for hikers.

Landhuizen, Dutch for plantation houses, are found throughout this beautiful island. They are uniquely built, varying in size and contrasting states of both remarkable renovation and eerie dilapidation. Dating back as far as the early 17th century to as late as the 19th century, these were the houses of the landowners, and formed the epicenter of their plantation/farms. From salt pans and sugar cane, to papaya, wool, wood, aloe, oranges, corn, cotton and cows – there was a constant buzz of activity and production. Even indigo, a blue dye revered and rumored around the world to have special powers to keep evil away, could be found in production here. The Landhuizen were built from coral with brick and stone details. Surrounding the main house were the slave huts and storage houses. They were situated mostly on hilltops so that lands, workers and neighboring houses were within sight.

The high saddle roofs, built with Dutch tile, were designed to serve the purpose of both catching and collecting much-needed rain water. Most of the slave houses that surrounded the property are long gone, but many of the Landhuizen are still standing and serve a vast array of functions. Brilliantly painted in a rainbow of bright hues and ornate by nature, these exquisitely renovated beauties now serve as private homes, boutique hotels, restaurants, rehabilitation centers, law offices, art galleries and museums. So grab the enclosed Events Curaçao road map (which shows most of the Landhuizen) and take an automobile adventure around this colorful island to discover these architectural gems. One cannot be less than thoroughly enthralled by the grandeur of these historic heritage houses.

LANDHUIS KLEIN SANTA MARTHA

Landhuis Bloemhof Discover its historical architecture, fine art exhibitions and surrounding gardens that make it a cherished cultural and historical venue in Curaçao. Landhuis Kenepa (KNIP) This colonial landhuis dates back to the start of the 18th century. Once the most prosperous plantations on the island, it is an important monument in the history of Curaçao. It was here that on August 17th, 1795, a number of slaves led by Tula, refused to go to work. LANDHUIS Savonet This old landhuis was set on fire in 1804 by the English during the British invasion. It was restored to its original condition early in the 19th century. LANDHUIS KLEIN SANTA MARTHA Built before 1700, this colonial home of the former plantation Klein Santa Martha is located on a hill northeast of Sta. Martha Bay. Landhuis Dokterstuin is an authentic 18th century house in a unique location for receptions and private parties. It is also where Restaurant Komedor Krioyo serves delicious Creole dishes in the garden. LANDHUIS ASCENSION This colonial home, founded in 1672, is located on the high grounds of a former Indian village. It had a strategic advantage since all neighboring colonial homes were within eyesight. In times of danger, people could be warned quickly by burning a torch in the iron eye on the top gable of the house. Landhuis Jan Kok was founded in 1704 and it is one of the oldest plantation house on the island. It was built opposite the Port Mari salt plains. Hundreds of slaves used to work on the salt plains producing thousands of barrels of salt. 42 events curaçao

LANDHUIS DANIEL was established around 1650 and it is one of the oldest existing plantation houses on Curaçao. According to stories, it was built by a castaway who washed ashore on St. Daniel’s day. Landhuis Groot Davelaar The revolutionary Venezuelan refugee Guzman Blanco, who later became the president of Venezuela, built this remarkable landhuis in 1865. The eight-sided hall is surrounded by a gallery and a view of ten other colonial homes in the area. LANDHUIS BRIEVENGAT Back in 1750, it was the biggest and most prominent landhuis where aloe was grown and cattle were bred. Devastated by a hurricane in 1877, the house was donated to a heritage foundation which restored it to its former grandeur. LANDHUIS CHOBOLOBO Built in the early 1800’s, this Country House is located in the center of a 10-hectare property. Its history is vague, but most likely this mansion served as a country residence for wealthy merchants. It is close to Schottegat, northeast of Punda. Landhuis Brakkeput Mei Mei In 1985, many years after being supervised by the Foundation for the Preservation and Restoration of Historic Buildings, this landhuis and site became a restaurant, serving only dinner, and is a breathtaking place for a special event. PACHI DE SOLA Built before 1762, this landhuis was restored in 1961 and today it serves as the Government Registration Office. On this site you can still see a former rainwater cistern and coach-house.

In 1795, a slave revolt led by Tula, a local slave, resulted in a month-long conflict on the island between escapees and the colonial government.

to a monumental past

It is an island’s history that breathes spirit into the future of its people and in Curaçao the people’s history is deeply rooted to the legends of their past. By 1700, some 1,500 slaves were expending blood, sweat and tears, until the abolishment of slavery in 1863, coinciding with its official demise in America. August 17 is still celebrated in Curaçao to commemorate the beginning of a long fight for freedom. When slavery was abolished, almost 7,000 slaves realized their freedom while some of them remained, as share croppers, minor traders and independent artisans. You will likely meet Curaçaoans today whose ancestors lived as slaves and hear stories, but there is actually a spot where you can pause, enjoy the beauty and, if you close your eyes and listen long enough, hear the ghosts of long-gone slaves beckoning beyond the whispering winds.

Den Dunki National Park isn’t merely a natural wonder, but a former slave holding camp established by the Dutch in the 17th century. Slaves were kept here following their brutal trans-Atlantic journey from Africa, so that they could regain some semblance of health prior to being sold. Following the emancipation of the slaves in the 19th century, the land was purchased by the wealthy Gorsira family – owners of the historic Landhuis, Zuurzak – who recreated the park as a place that could be enjoyed rather than merely endured and survived. The park became a haven for swans and consists of numerous ornamental water fountains, a large well and an impressive entrance bridge. Many of this original architecture still exists to this very day and the visit is enhanced by markers dedicated to the island’s past. If solitude is your preference, one may stroll along trails that weave through the property, making for an extremely peaceful escape from civilization. Visitors can also look forward to hearing stories from that bygone, terrible age, against a beautiful and elegant backdrop that will make that history not only palatable, but extremely memorable. By remembering, you pay homage to an entire race that remains a key component in the economic prosperity that Curaçao enjoys today. events curaçao 43

Stone Walls

Fort Beekenburg Photo by Rick Friedalnder

Curaçao is home to authentic defensive forts that still stand as remarkable representations of the island’s allure. When in Willemstad, it’s hard to miss the forts that once protected this colorful city. Now, with so much within the confines of these once-imposing buildings, from museums and historic tours, to upscale shops and restaurants – natives, ex-pats and visitors frolic in Curaçao’s fabulously functional forts for unforgettable fun, food and culture. Sixteenth century stone walls rise majestically above blue water and tower over the harbor entrance. The walls cast shadows into their cavernous tunnels and winding staircases taking us back to a time hundreds of years ago when the Dutch East India Company built these massive masonry forts strictly for strategic defensive purposes. The Dutch toiled for three centuries to secure the island and protect its interests. While Fort Amsterdam was built to serve as the island’s primary protecting structure, several smaller forts were erected to protect individual sections of the capital city. Despite being under constant attack first by Spain, then England and France, later by Venezuela and Germany, and repetitively by pirates and privateers, this complex of forts accomplished the feat of protecting the Dutch colony for nearly 400 years. 46 4 events curaçao

Six of eight forts still exist and have a stronghold on modern day Curaçao functioning as converted hotels, shops and restaurants and also transformed into museums and offices. Fort Amsterdam Built in 1635 on a strategic point in Punda, it was named after the Chamber of Amsterdam and was the most important of Curaçao’s forts as it served as the island’s primary protecting structure. Fort Amsterdam is on UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites. Go there to see: The Governor’s home, the island’s Ministry and numerous government offices, a museum and the United Protestant Church, both of which remain open to the public. Fort Beekenburg Built in 1703 at the Caracas Bay, which covered the Spanish Waters inner bay and named for Director van Beek, who planned the city’s defense from 1701 to 1704. This fort warded off French and English fleets as well as pirates more than once during the 18th century. It is one of the best preserved forts in the entire Caribbean. Fort Nassau Built in 1797 to defend the St. Anna Bay and part of the city of Willemstad. Named for the Royal House of Orange. Preserved close to its original state for many years, it served as a harbor signal and control tower, regulating the opening and closing of the Pontoon Bridge. Go there to see: A restaurant with 18th century appeal and a bar built on a hilltop overlooking Willemstad in the ruins of a buttressed fort.

Fort Waakzaamheid Built in 1803 this smaller fort, with its view over Otrobanda, was built to defend the island against a French invasion. In 1804, it fell victim to a 26-day siege by Captain Bligh of “Mutiny on the Bounty” fame. During World War II, the Americans mounted guns on the walls, and established barracks and an observation post. Go there to see: A restaurant serving international cuisine and a popular choice for private parties, receptions and business meetings. Fort Riffort Built in 1828 to defend the outer section of Willemstad’s Otrobanda district. This fort stands between the harbor entrance, sea coast and the former Rifwater. Riffort has been home to the Authority, Public Works, the police, and the Boy Scouts. Go there to see: Riffort Village, a shopping center, restaurants, bars, an ice-cream & coffee shop and scenic terraces overlooking the harbor. Waterfort Built in 1634 to defend the outer section of Willemstad’s Punda district. In 1827 the original structure was replaced by a building with 136 turrets and vaults containing stores, stables, and medical services. This fort accommodated troops during World War II and showcased coastal and anti-aircraft artillery on its walls. Go there to see: Punda’s most popular eateries and terraces overlooking the sea.

PIETERMAAI DISTRICT

The heart of Willemstad

The Pietermaai District, fondly referred to as the "SoHo" of Curaçao, is likely to catch one’s eye. Boutique hotels, small shops, cozy little cafés and top-rated restaurants snuggled together, makes the neighborhood highly walkable and perfect for exploring at your leisure. It’s a neighborhood full of stunning architecture, mystery, magic and fun!

A perfect blend of the old & the new Originally a residential neighborhood, and owing its existence to a lack of space within the city walls at the beginning of the 18th century, Pietermaai District is now home to many trendy lounge areas and dotted with specialty shops and art studios. It is said that the area was named after the Dutch captain Pieter de Meij. The suburb attracted wealthy merchants resulting in impressive mansions built in the Dutch architectural styles of the 18th and 19th centuries. In the mid19th century, after the city walls were torn down, Pietermaai became a hub for ideas, business and culture.

The theaters and small artisanal businesses added to the neighborhood’s appeal and still serve as inspiration for the lively atmosphere the area is known for today. Most of the derelict buildings have been restored and modern buildings occupy previously vacant plots. A perfect combination of the old and the new.

300 YEARS OF ENTERTAINMENT Pietermaai District is constantly bustling with activity. It is a mecca for music lovers and people looking for some late-night revelry. It is this lively atmosphere that makes Pietermaai District a must-visit destination for

nightlife, entertainment and fine dining. During the day, the district retains its funky vibes and is a perfect place to meet local artists and neighborhood characters.

Great time for night owls & early birds The quaint neighborhood of Pietermaai District is located just a stone’s throw away from the city center, Willemstad. The district covers an impressive yet walkable, area stretching from The Movies at Plaza Mundo Merced to the rows of bars along Pietermaai and the restaurants at Johan van Walbeeckplein all the way to Avila Hotel in Penstraat. events curaçao 47

Curaçao Discover by the sea

“This little paradise is well worth the day trip. I cannot imagine a more beautiful ride with the wind on the Jonalisa” by Rick Friedlander

Klein Curaçao

is a 1.7 square kilometer tropical paradise situated less than an hour southeast off the coast of Curaçao in the Caribbean. Uninhabited, aside from day trippers, fisherman and turtles, this island is certainly worth the trip should you be in search of a white sandy beach embraced by clear calm turquoise water, rich with sea life. My day starts at 7:00 am at the dock at Spanish Water. My hosts at Bounty Adventures come cruising into the pier right on schedule. The crew on the Jonalisa is funny and upbeat. Everything about this operation is professional and flawless. About halfway out to the island we were met by a pod of wild dolphins, at least a couple of hundred! They followed the boat for quite some time, impressing us with their diehard curiousity and acrobatics. This alone was worth the price of admission. What a spectacular event! Before we could recover from the beauty of that encounter, we spotted the island in the distance. Within twenty minutes we were sitting in crystal clear turquoise water with a line of

white sandy beach in front of us. Divers (the island offers beautiful coral caves and turtles) and snorkelers (equipment provided) could hardly wait to enter the water while others took the ten-second zodiac shuttle to the beach. The island consists of a beautiful old lighthouse, an eerie dilapidated wreck of a tanker called the Maria Blanca – on the rougher, wave-battered side of the island, some fishermen’s huts, and some palm-frond covered sheds nestled into the coconut palms offering shelter from the sun. A little painted map shows the paths to the wreck and lighthouse, but the path is hard to miss. A climb up into the lighthouse over the creaky boards offers a panoramic view of the island for the more adventurous. Belonging to the country of Curaçao, this little island was once a short-lived German Naval base in the late 1800s. With no permanent inhabitants, it serves as a base for excellent diving, fishermen, and a handful of people who make the trip daily for some R&R. Dolphin photo by Rick Friedlander

Day Sail by Sheila Botton

With a warm breeze on our side, it is another perfect day to climb aboard the custom-built, 54 foot catamaran. It's time to draw the sails and let Bounty Adventures take us on an adventure! As we glide out of Spanish Waters Bay, we head toward the open sea, following the southern coast of Curaçao. Sitting at the tip of the boat, I can hear the wind gust in the sails... I release busy thoughts, breathe in the fresh misty air and enjoy the ride. The sea sparkles as we sail towards Caracasbaai. Gazing at the horizon, I am suddenly surprised to see a giant metal pipeline platform, stationed in this bay since 2012. The captain anchors very close to it. It is an odd sight to see in this natural scenery, but it presents a surreal background and contrast to the sparkling blue water and snorkelers swimming by the side of it. Along the metal pillars, an abundance of coral, seahorses and other wildlife can be found, making the platform their home. Fiery orange and yellow moss-like coral cover the structures and tiny fish come to feed off the plankton. With no time to lose, the passengers grab snorkeling gear and enter the refreshing water to explore the life beneath the surface. Within minutes, I jump in and immerse myself in the blue, joining the group. The clarity and the view below the surface is sensational. There is so much beauty to take in. Our guide points out a puffer fish and a variety of tangs scattered about.

The reef is rich with marine life including trumpet coral – elephant trunk-like branches that have a leathery smooth touch to them. A feeling of complete peace washes over me as I dive a little deeper each time. An hour feels like minutes, and it’s time to return to the gently swaying catamaran. It’s not long before the lively team onboard prepare a delicious buffet lunch and open bar to quench my appetite and replenish spent calories from exploring and swimming. As we sail off, we drift away from the coast and head to our next snorkeling destination. This time around, I opt to just relax and experience the stillness, relaxing on the sunning net at the front of the boat. I am daydreaming, listening to the water slosh beneath me and voices in the distance. I surface from my dream state to the sound of the anchor being drawn up, and we head back toward the open sea. There is more swell this afternoon which makes the ride exhilarating, yet the catamaran, due to its wider structure, is very steady and comfortable as it takes on the waves. Now, back at the dock at Pirates' Nest, I feel enchanted by my day on and off the Jonalisa. No matter where I go next or what goes on tomorrow, I know that the clear water, the colorful fish and the sound of wind in the sails will always be there waiting for my return.

Lost Anchor A favorite Curaçao dive site, bright and colorful. This reef, on the rough side of Caracasbay, is not easily accessible, but the dive on Lost Anchor makes up for it. Beautiful lush wall covered in gorgonians and sea fans. Dense coral growth hides an anchor chain that goes on forever. The dive finishes on a shallow edge where sea horses like to hang out. Great dive for macro photography. Beacon Point Currents make this site an intermediate to advanced dive. Largest pillar coral formation in the Caribbean at this dive site. In the blue you can spot large jacks, grouper and barracuda. Newport This beautiful and pristine dive site is only accessible by Ocean Encounters. A beautiful slope with great star coral, brain coral, and soft gorgonians. Eagle rays and turtles are spotted frequently. Small Wall The name says it all, it is a wall and it is small. Overhangs and little nooks house schools of soldier fish, grunts, and damsels – protecting their gardens and eggs. Lush gorgonians and sea fans wave in the soft current.

Wreck Dives

Superior Producer In 1977 the Superior Producer was on its way to Isla Margarita, when it came into the harbor of Curaçao to take on fuel and supplies. As the ship continued its voyage, it ran into trouble exiting the harbor. Due to rough seas, part of the cargo shifted and as a result, the ship started to take on water. The ship was towed to the north of the harbor entrance where it finally sunk just off the coast of Otrobanda.

The wreck measures about 50 meters in length, sits upright on a sand plateau 60 meters away from the shore, at a depth of about 30 meters. The deck and the entrance to the cargo hold are at a depth of about 25 meters. The shallowest part of the wreck is the top of the super structure at around 18 meters. After all these years on the bottom of the ocean, the wreck is now completely covered with many different species of coral and sponges. One species of coral, the orange tube coral, does very well under low light conditions and covers much of the wreck. The polyps of this coral are bigger than the other coral and when they extend during the night to catch food, the wreck turns orange. Tugboat The wreck of the tugboat rests upright at aproximately 6 meters on the southernmost point of an extensive sand plateau at the Caracasbaii Island. Over the years, the wreck became fully covered with many different coral formations and colorful sponges. The dive spot is sheltered from the elements, so the diving conditions are near perfect. There are hardly any waves or current at the wreck. Just around the corner in a southeasterly direction you will find a steep wall which drops down to a 30 meter depth. When you dive on the wall, you have to keep in mind that here there could be a current of considerable strength. The top of the reef and the shallow part of the drop-off are fully covered with coral and sponges. The wall has less coral coverage but has many small crevices and holes which hold many small creatures like crabs and several species of nudibranchs. At the end of the adventure it is well worth the trouble to dive to the pier next to the dive center. The steel pillars are fully covered with coral and sponges and hold a lot of small underwater life. events curaçao 57

At Dolphin Academy’s open ocean training program the dolphins will follow their trainers from their protected lagoon to the open sea on daily excursions involving scuba diving, snorkeling, and sometimes simply playing around... The scuba dive in particular has provided the opportunity for staff and guests alike to observe dolphin behavior rarely seen elsewhere. Although the dolphins have mastered a variety of trained behavior... the format of the scuba dive with the dolphins places the animals in complete control of the activity. Whether foraging and feeding on fish, socializing and communicating with each other, or interacting with the divers – the dolphins have complete control of their own choices and decisions. The dolphins understand that their trainers’ only expectation is that they are within visual range of each other most of the time. The dolphin dive sites have been the stage for marvelous displays of foraging and feeding. Although the dolphins of the Academy are fed a full and balanced daily diet by their trainers, they still enjoy the thrill of catching their own fish once in a while. They especially enjoy the problem-solving aspect of figuring out HOW to catch them. There is almost nothing "instinctive" about the methods used by dolphins to catch live fish. It’s all about learning and experience. Baby dolphins learn how to do it through a combination of "trial and error" and their mother's example. For instance, like her

mother before her – Tela helped teach her son Pasku to catch parrot fish, doctor fish, big-eyed shad, and sardines. Each species of fish requires unique variations of catching technique. While the trainers are accustomed to seeing mothers teach their calves, Pasku reversed the trend when he was very young. Pasku was fascinated with a type of small fish living among the branching arms of soft corals on the reef. He discovered that if he placed his snout carefully alongside the branches and waited patiently, a file fish would eventually wander too close to Pasku’s mouth, allowing the dolphin to snatch the fish with his teeth in a lightning-fast movement. Tela studied her son’s new method and was soon using the technique for herself. Even more remarkable, another adult female named Annie also learned by observing Pasku – and eventually went on to teach her first baby, Machu. These days, catching file fish is a regular cultural phenomena among the DA’s dolphin community, and a sight often witnessed by scuba divers who join the fun.

Yoga is the practice of quieting the mind. ~Patanjali, translated from Sanskrit

Yoga is an ancient Indian wellness and healing system gaining popularity and attracting people to studios in urban centers and retreats all over the world. The word is derived from the Sanskrit root yuj, or to yoke to the spirit, and it embraces a range of disciplines whose ultimate goal is the joining of body, mind and spirit, a conscious unification into oneness. The secret to this ancient practice is a combination of breathing techniques, meditation and asanas or postures. Asanas are the most popular of the three disciplines adopted by the Western world; they develop strength, flexibility and a supple yoga body. Yield to Yoga Curaçao was once the home to an ashram dedicated to the lineage of the famous Yogi and author of An Autobiography of a Yogi, Parmahansa Yogananda. Beginner to advanced classes in yoga, meditation and pranayama are used to calm the mind. Yoga "opens the door to the soul." Ayurvedic massage, an Indian style of bodywork with essential oils, eliminates toxins, stimulates circulation and promotes a deep state of relaxation. If you are not tempted to venture beyond the comfort of your hotel, yoga classes are offered in most hotel gyms or spas. Classes range from gentle Hatha Yoga to vigorous Power Yoga. Choose one-on-one private sessions or group classes, indoor or outdoor.

Meditation on the beach is a magical and euphoric. Experiencing oneness with infinite nature makes it easy to bring the "path inward" to recognize our unity with everything and everyone.

Curaçao with its diverse natural landscapes and awe-inspiring scenery, offers unique possiblities to practice Yoga. Many resorts schedule Yoga classes but beyond this, there are several group and private Yoga classes offered around the island, hosted by very experienced Yoga practitioners. My name is Adriana. I am Costa Rican and have been living in Curaçao for a few years. I started teaching Yoga on the island two years ago. During that time, I found so many magical spots to practice at and those places inspired me to connect my practice with the elements of nature. Curaçao is surrounded by water; according to Ayurveda, we derive nourishment from the element of water. Practicing, while gazing at crystal clear waters that merge into deep blue colors, soothes me and makes me feel emotionally content. The island is also popular for its strong winds. In Ayurveda, the wind element powers all movements; from the action of your joints to the passage of nutrients through cell walls. I find that an outdoor practice – connecting with the wind–stimulates creativity, gives a sense of power and increases stamina. At times, when I need grounding, I love to visit the Salt Flats – a popular location where people go for walks. At this spot I connect with the element of earth; a healthy connection to the earth makes you feel stable and grounded, it always gives me a boost of confidence. I worked very little with the elements before I was inspired to incorporate them to my practice on this beautiful island I call home. I would recommend to anyone visiting to read more about it and practice it in this unique setting!

One-on-one yoga training with Leticia at the beach!

My name is Leticia. About 10 years ago, I started a Yoga practice out of curiosity and to help alleviate back pain. Over a short period of time, the pain went away. At that point, I realized that Yoga was therapeutic for the mind and for the body. For me, Yoga is not only time spent on the mat repeating asanas and pranayama; it is a lifestyle, an everyday practice through acts of kindness towards ourselves, others and the environment around us. The goal of Yoga is to appreciate our bodies, to become aware of our mind, to make peace with who you are and to love. All the benefits of Yoga inspire me to share the amazing experience with others through giving Yoga classes and ayurvedic tips.

My passion for the ocean and nature started when I was a child. I graduated in Biology, became a dive instructor, underwater photographer and Yoga teacher. I love the fact that in Curaçao, I can often practice Yoga outdoors and give Yoga classes right by the shore, listening to the waves, feeling the wind, the energy from the sun and the moon, while connecting mind, body and soul. "The mind is very powerful but often misused. We can easily become slaves to our thoughts, limiting our potential as human beings. The regular practice of Vinyasa Yoga develops a strong, flexible and resilient body and these characteristics influence the mind, making it equally flexible and adaptable to change."

Exquisite days end with exhilarating nights

by Deya Mensche

When in Curaçao, don’t limit yourself only to the beach. Let your hair down in various trendy hotspots and nightclubs or casually enjoy great music and some delicious drinks in a relaxing atmosphere. Most wateringholes are located in the Punda, Pietermaai, Saliña, Seaquarium and Janthiel areas, but the island has numerous popular bars and pubs you can explore. There is something to do for everybody, from laid-back jazz joints like Miles Jazz Café in Pietermaai, to hip-shaking lounges like Emporio Grand Café located in Saliña. Events Curaçao explored the newer establishments with some friends and went on a bonafied pub-crawl to relate what a fun night in Curaçao entails. We started out in the charming Pietermaai district, which is becoming a must-go area for tourists and locals. This revamped historical area has several restaurants, pubs and cafés to choose from: Miles Jazz Café, Bar 27, Mundo Bizarro, Déjà Vu, BijBlauw, Saint-Tropez Ocean Club and Luke’s Bar. We visited the latest additions, Cantina el Patron in Pietermaai, Live 973 and Mood at Mambo Beach. Cantina el Patron The Cuban-inspired Grand Café is known for its lively Sangria parties and Tequila nights, in addition to its diverse menu and mouthwatering tapas. We ordered the traditional Mojito and also asked our bartender to create his secret signature drink... we had to promise not to divulge his recipe. As we sipped our drinks, a lively discussion evolved about life, family and love. The flamboyant interior is a mosaic of colors, and before you know it, you’ll be wandering through the establishment admiring the architecture and artwork. Every Thursday, happy hour is from 9:30pm to 10:30pm. If you want to cool down from a hot evening, the friendly bartenders are more than willing to create a refreshing drink for you.

Live 973 Dolfijn FM, Curaçao’s most popular Dutch language radio station, recently revamped its studio and added a swanky cocktail lounge called Live 973. The helpful and knowledgeable bartenders, like sexy barman and Dolfijn DJ, Maxim Pluciennik, can whip up a mouthwatering gin and tonic in no time. Live 973 is famous for its Friday Ladies Night, where the drinks are 50% off between 8pm and 10pm. We tried the Caipirinha and a secret ‘Love Potion’, that promised to tantalize more than just our taste buds. During the Funky Soul Beats, renowned DJ’s like Wynsel and Maarten Schakel take to the turntables to play the catchiest tunes. Whether you are unwinding after a long day at the office or just warming up a night of fun, you can relax in the comfortable Arabic inspired sofas of Live 973, while some laid-back lounge music plays in the background. Mood Beach You're not ready for your fun on the beach to end? Then hang out at Mood, a full-service beach club with African inspired contemporary comforts and where you can swim at Mambo Beach just in front of the Kontiki Resort. The emphasis at Mood is relaxation... easily achieved by lounging on large comfortable beach beds or enjoying a relaxing massage in a private cabana while sipping a refreshing cocktail. We beg you to stay on the beach long enough to enjoy the most romantic Caribbean sunset. Besides beach-bites and snacks, Mood also offers a diverse Caribbean-inspired menu. While at Mood, we enjoyed a mixed platter fit for a king, with some scrumptious chicken and shrimp skewers. According to the staff, the signature fish dish is the Twoway Tuna, sourced from local waters. This delicious meal includes grilled tuna, sashimi tuna served with a white cabbage salad, ginger mayonnaise and wasabi crunch. When the sun sets, Mood becomes a bustling beach bar, with a lively happy hour and live music. You can practically party in your swimming trunks at Mood, so don’t hesitate to let your hair down.

A Melting pot Curaçao Cuisine A Caribbean blend of global flavors, Curaçao’s cuisine is influenced primarily by Dutch culture with an added dollop of Creole flair, African traditions and European expertise. Curaçao is rich and diverse in history lending itself wholeheartedly to the creation of rich and diverse menus all over the island, making local cuisine one of Curaçao’s great treasures. You would certainly miss out if you didn’t dine like a local. Local menus include fish fresh from the sea like mahi mahi or dradu in Papiamento and a red snapper dish called Pika Hasa. Not for the faint of appetite, the national specialty, Keshi Yena, translates to filled cheese in Papiamento and is a savory meal of Gouda cheese stuffed with meat or fish. Made from corn, Funchi is a polentalike delicacy with a scrumptious blend of cornmeal pudding and rice. Livin’ La Vida Local On the menu: Standard fare like Karko (conch meat), Stoba (stewed goat or beef), Dradu (local mahi mahi), lobster, plantains. Funchi, Pika Hasa, red snapper; and of course the signature dish Keshi Yena.

A unique cuisine that is Curaçao’s melting pot is guaranteed to tantalize the taste buds while dishing up an authentic slice of island life.

A special mention goes to iguana stew and the brave and daring tourists who give it a try! For fearless foodies, iguana stew tastes like chicken and is high in protein. Curaçao also boasts its own hot sauce Pika. Pika is made with diced onions, vinegar and hot peppers and is used to enhance many of the local dishes. Ask for it when dining out and, if you can’t live without it, take home this easy recipe. Curaçaoan Onion Pika: 1 large red onion, finely chopped, 1 scotch bonnet pepper, seeded, 1 ½ cups distilled white vinegar and 4 tsp salt. Combine all ingredients together in a large jar, shake until salt dissolves, let marinate 2-3 days. Serve with stews, meat, fish and corn dishes. Keeps well for up to 3 months.

Eat on the Cheap Stroll through the maze of backstreet alleys and you’ll be amazed at the global stew of international and local restaurants and cafés to choose from. Or, take advantage of the many after-hour mobile snack bars and local eateries where, for pocket change, you can purchase plenty of yummy food for everyone.
