Curaçao holds so many gifts that will appeal to your inner explorer and personal wellbeing. To feel good inside and out is my mantra and I strive to build on the concept of inner-outer beauty and fitness in a way that is enjoyable. My yoga practice helps me dig beneath the surface to reveal the wisdom of making lifestyle changes, that ultimately energize the body, mind and soul... to leave one–not just looking good–but feeling great too.

There is a rapidly growing wellness industry here on the island and it is passionately spreading awareness of the importance of living healthy. A community of like-minded people on Curaçao provides tips, resources, classes and workshops on implementing positive, healthy and sustainable lifestyle changes to improve overall wellbeing. Sometimes, all we need is a gentle reminder, especially on your vacation, on how to bring ourselves back into balance and prioritize our own wellness. Today it is more crucial than ever, to keep our minds and hearts open and to learn from other cultures that are different from our own. uraçao has been named one of the hottest destinations by AOL Travel, Fodor’s and Tripadvisor, and it comes as no surprise that it’s also one of the most popular sundrenched hotspots for destination weddings. With a dreamy backdrop that includes endless ocean and seaside views, not to mention top-notch resorts that are armed with wedding planners who can take care of every last detail on the to-do list, Curaçao is the perfect island for couples to have their dream wedding.

From postcard-perfect beaches, snorkeling and diving, to exploring the rugged countryside and caves down under, thereâ€™s plenty to do on the island.

Curaçao hits the beach bull's-eye, with 37 sandy strands rimming the scenic coastline. Here are just a few!

ess than an hour from Willemstad, on the west coast, Playa Kenepa is really two beaches; Kenepa Grandi or Grote Knip is the bigger beach and Kenepa Chiki or Klein Knip the smaller one. One road leads to both of the popular beaches where you can bring your own cooler and sample Dutch treats like crunchy pastries called pastechis sold by the vendors at the entrance. Klein Knip is the go-to for snorkeling while Grote Knip is the better beach for drawing your own line in the sand. Halfway between the two is a lookout where brazen cliff divers test their skills and onlookers pose for selfies. Cas Abao is what connoisseurs like to call full-service. On the southwest coast, the talc sand and denim blue water makes the beach ideal for swimming and kayaking. Upping the ante, there are beach masseurs, a Daiquiri Bar and a parking lot for those with rental cars. Easy to find with cliffs marking the sides of the cove and fishing boats parked on the sand, Playa Lagun is on the dive A-list with sponges and coral plentiful along the cliffs.

Playa Jeremi is a medium-sized beach, just north of Lagun that only offers a few palapas and a couple of picnic tables. There are cliffs on either side of the turquoise -blue water, and the beach itself is both simple and beautiful. Playa Porto Mari is also fun for underwater exploring with a unique double reef and trails that lead to a kaleidoscope of coral, colorful fish and sea turtles. Playa Kalki, a small cove popular for snorkeling and diving, has a roped-off area with a floating platform. It is located down steep stone steps from the parking area. Halfway between the parking area and the beach is a shaded terrace with a snack bar and dive shop. Entrance to the water is somewhat rocky but worth it! Between Wespunt and Otrobanda, near the village of Sint Michiel, the beach at Blue Bay Resort is a shimmering welcome mat with powdery sand and a gently sloping sea floor that is safe for young swimmers. Sunny add-ons include loungers, water sports, Friday happy hour with live music and spirited Sunday barbecues.

A few minutes past Blue Bay Resort Kokomo beach, (Vaersenbaai), is a beautiful natural bay with a laid-back surf atmosphere and an upscale touch. This is an ideal beach to enjoy a quiet day with family, have a great lunch, try one of their delicious cocktails or just fall in love with the cristal clear water! In an upscale neighborhood east of Willemstad, you can find Jan Thiel Beach. With a chic and cozy atmosphere, it offers full-service with restaurants, massage, watersports, superb diving and snorkeling. From a siesta on a palm-shaded day bed to chilling with a cold beer or sipping a margarita at happy hour, there are plenty of beach activities in between and musical entertainment after sunset. The Sea Aquarium Beach, also known as Mambo Beach, invites swimmers, snorkelers and divers with a breakwater that keeps the shallow water calm, so even on days with rough surf, you can follow schools of tropical fish along the break. This beach is relaxation perfection with water sports kiosks, one-stop-shopping at the BLVD, a huge selection of restaurants and movies – all at the water’s edge.

here is a reason why Curaçao’s city center is on Unesco’s World Heritage List. Over 800 monumental buildings can be found in Curaçao and most of them are in walking distance of each other. For a city vibe, ditch the surf, at least for a day, you can always go back to the beach tomorrow... Named after Dutch royalty, five bridges connect three districts of Willemstad; Punda, Otrobanda and Scharloo. Nicknamed the ‘Swinging Old Lady’, the Queen Emma Pontoon Bridge spans the St. Anna Bay and is the only floating bridge in the world. Connecting Punda and Otrobanda, the most photographed bridge on the island sparkles at night with twinkling lights. Marking more than two decades on the UNESCO World Heritage List, Willemstad is a delightfully walkable city. The oldest district, called Punda, is charming with cobble-stoned lanes and a pastel-pretty waterfront, with the bright yellow Penha building built on the corner in 1708. The big Curaçao sign in Queen Wilhelmina Park is just steps from the Information Booth where you can snag gratis maps of the island, brochures and a few more copies of Events Curaçao to bring back as souvenirs!

For a spirited street party, Thursday Night Punda Vibes is a must-do with shows, live music, Curaçao folkloric dancing on the Plaza, and fireworks over the bay. This festive evening, in iconic downtown Punda, gathers locals and visitors alike, in celebration of this island’s unique cultural heritage and traditions. On the art alley called Windstraat, Chichi Punda is a groovy gallery owned by Serena Israel who created the original Chichi from chicken wire, paper and glue. With a robust Chichi at the entrance, dolls painted in vibrant colors are striking souvenirs. Just past this gallery, you will also find the Nena Sanchez gallery belonging to a famous local artist that recently passed away. The gallery still hosts a special pop-up Sangria Bar on Thursday evenings at her family-run gallery. Close by in a yellow building on Hanchi Snoa, Mikve Israel-Emanuel is the oldest synagogue in continuous use in the Americas. Consecrated in 1732, the distinctive sandy floor pays homage to the earliest Jewish settlers who, while living in Europe during the Spanish Inquisition, had to muffle their footsteps to observe judaism and pray. Across the footbridge from the Floating Market, Scharloo looks a lot like Miami’s artsy Wynwood neighborhood where the wealthiest merchants lived centuries ago. Today, Scharloo is home to murals on centuries-old buildings as well as the National Archives in a forest-green wedding cake-shaped mansion.

Explore on your own or book a tour on a three-wheeler called a ‘tuk tuk’. For an afternoon nosh, Beyglz is the real deal with bagels flown in from New York. As you stroll through Scharloo, you can soak up the colors, romance and nostalgia of the historic neighborhood. Legend has it that Scharloo got its name from the Dutch words meaning 'little bushes' or 'scrubs'. Around the 1700s, many elite Sephardic Jews moved to Scharloo and constructed colorful villas inspired by Spanish-style architecture, which solidified its identity. Due to a government decree outlawing white paint, many villas in Curaçao, including those located in Scharloo, were painted in every vibrant color imaginable. After World War II, Scharloo started to lose its colonial splendor, as many heirs lost interest in maintaining the villas, or simply died off. This made room for the working class to move into the dwellings that became vacant. Many mansions in Scharloo were purchased by banks and other financial institutions and turned into office spaces. Fortunately, things are on an upswing since Scharloo is experiencing a renaissance. Starting at Parke Leyba, which has become a hub for local artists and entrepreneurs, Scharloo is evolving from a financial district into a swanky community that is attracting some renowned artists and musicians.

DISCOVERING

FRANCIS SLING

ne notable resident of Curaçao is painter and artist Francis Sling, age 39, who has been creating quite a buzz around his murals and paintings. Especially the 3 o’clock Romance, the impressive yellow and blue mural at the corner of Bitterstraat, has become a must see during the city tour. Sling’s work is also gaining international recognition, as he is nominated for a Street Arts Awards Benelux for his ‘Sunú’ mural in Otrobanda, selected from more than 600 artists. Occasionally, Sling also moonlights as a graphic designer, but explains that art has become his true outlet of self-expression. Sling’s work is very vibrant, yet has some melodrama to it, but is definitely more than just a pretty picture. The product is a captivating use of acrylics on canvas or wood. When Sling works on wood, he carves unique frames that perfectly contour and blend with his artwork, and with every dynamic or gentle paint stroke he applies to his canvas, he loves to capture the essence and emotion of his subject or model. With his transparency and honesty, Sling’s art becomes real and often emotes what we cannot verbalize or express ourselves.

ue to the popularity of the Bitterstraat mural, Monumentenzorg – the nonprofit that manages the reconstruction of monuments in Curaçao – noticed Sling’s work and approached him to consider Scharloo as a new abode. Sling moved into the newly renovated home, which he plans to transform into a studio and coffee house that he hopes to open before the end of 2018. Sling shared with Events Curaçao that he aspires to be even more creative and hopes, one day, to write theater productions. In the near future, Sling plans to build another atelier in his childhood neighborhood, together with his brother and artist Omar Sling. He also wants to continue to organize painting workshops, which he hosts several times a year. When you visit Sling at his atelier, you can admire many colorful pieces hanging on the walls and even purchase one of his impressive ready-to-wear jewelry pieces made from leftover paint peeled off his painting palette or pick up a block of art from the heart to take back home with you! 21

Living History Landhuizen With

its rich history of sprawling plantations, Curaçao has preserved many of its estate homes all over the island.

fficially called a Landhuis (’land house’) in Dutch, these beautiful homes of a past era, give us a glimpse into what life was like hundreds of years ago. Built to replicate the typical Dutch architecture back in Holland, but yet subtly adapted to suit the tropical climate and to capture the cooling trade winds, they stand as a reminder of the island’s Dutch heritage. Many of them sit in the outskirts of the city and served as grand residences for the Dutch elite, while others found in the rural countryside, were prosperous agricultural plantations, often providing the island with food and goods for export. There was also a burgeoning salt industry at the time, and many of the land houses (‘landhuizen’) are situated close to old salt flats that were tended by slaves.

Some estates produced indigo and other dyes primarily for export, but also used as a key ingredient in the production of the many different colorful paints that decorated our famously vibrant buildings. Nowadays, many of these historic gems have been meticulously preserved and serve a number of different purposes including: art galleries, museums, schools, offices, restaurants and private residences. We invite you to explore them as you drive around the island to learn more about our intriguing past.

Landhuis Klein Santa Martha

Built before 1700, this colonial home of a former plantation house is located on a hill northeast of Sta. Martha Bay. It now serves as a museum and a venue for special events.

Landhuis Kenepa (KNIP)

Once the most prosperous plantation on the island, it is an important monument in the history of Curaçao. It was here that on August 17th, 1795, a number of slaves led by Tula, refused to go to work and began a revolt which spread island-wide and ultimately led to the abolition of slavery in Curaçao in 1863. The landhuis is now an important museum recognizing Curaçao’s involvement in slavery and the dreadful slave trade industry.

Landhuis Savonet

This old landhuis was set on fire in 1804 by the English during the British invasion. It was restored to its original condition early in the 19th century. It now serves as a museum and the gateway to the island’s largest nature reserve including Mt. Christoffel and the Christoffelpark.

Landhuis Dokterstuin

This is an authentic 18th century house in a unique location for receptions and private parties. It is also where Restaurant Komedor Krioyo serves delicious Creole dishes in the garden of the estate home.

Landhuis Ascencion

This colonial home, founded in 1672, is located on the high grounds of a former Indian village. It had a strategic advantage since all neighboring colonial homes were within eyesight. In times of danger, or slave uprisings, neighboring estates could be warned quickly by burning a torch in the iron eye on the top gable of the house.

Pachi de Sola

Built before 1762, this landhuis was restored in 1961 and today it serves as the Government Registration Office. On this site you can still see a former rainwater cistern and coach-house.

Landhuis Jan Kok

Founded in 1704, it is one of the oldest plantation houses on the island. It was built opposite the Port Mari salt flats. Hundreds of slaves used to work on the salt pans producing thousands of barrels of salt. Today, the interior showcases a collection of Nena Sanchez artwork. She recently passsed away but lives on in her expression through art.

Landhuis Daniel

This estate was established around 1650 and is one of the oldest existing plantation houses on Curaçao. According to stories, it was built by a castaway who washed ashore on St. Daniel’s Day. It now features a restaurant and a small guesthouse.

Landhuis Groot Davelaar

The revolutionary Venezuelan refugee Guzman Blanco, who later became the president of Venezuela, built this remarkable landhuis in 1865. The eight-sided hall is surrounded by a gallery and a view of ten other colonial homes in the area.

Landhuis Brievengat

Back in 1750, it was the biggest and most prominent landhuis where aloe vera was cultivated, and cattle were bred. Devastated by a hurricane in 1877, the house was donated to a heritage foundation which restored it to its former grandeur.

Landhuis Chobolobo Built in the early 1800’s, this Country House is located in the center of a 10-hectare property. Its history is vague, but the mansion most likely served as a country residence for wealthy merchants. It is close to Schottegat, northeast of Punda. Nowadays it is home to the distillery of the famous Blue Curaçao Liqueur and is open to the public for tours of the factory. Landhuis Brakkeput Mei Mei

This plantation dates back to the early 1700’s and was primarily used for raising cattle and growing other crops for local consumption. Presently the landhuis is home to a steakhouse restaurant and is one of the most popular venues for private parties and events.

Landhuis Bloemhof

As an art gallery, you can discover its historical architecture, fine art exhibitions and surrounding gardens that make it a cherished cultural and historical venue in Curaçao.

Century Dutch Forts

The Caribbeanâ€™s rich history of European colonial powers fighting over the riches that these beautiful islands had to offer, gives rise to a great many tales of victorious battles and crushing defeats. Sprinkle in a few tales of ruthless pirates, and the scene is set.

uraçao was no stranger to this narrative, with the Spaniards first seizing control of the island from the native Amerindians, they established a small enclave in the Spanish Water Bay for over a hundred years. Perhaps lacking the vision to see all that this island had to offer, they first named it “Isla Inútil,” (Useless Island). But alas, the Dutch saw the vast potential that this island had as a trading port, and captured the island from the Spaniards. Centuries later, England too tried to lay its claim and invaded the island and ruled it for a short time. But the Dutch fought back to regain control. With its fair share of battles and pirate raids, Curaçao has a great many forts that serve as a reminder of its colorful and intriguing history. Take a visit to any of the following forts to relive the island’s colonial past and awaken that pirate spirit!

Fort Nassau Built in 1797 to defend the St. Anna Bay and

Fort Amsterdam Built in 1635, on a strategic point in

Riffort Built in 1828 to defend the outer section of

Punda, it was named after the Chamber of Amsterdam and was the most important of Curaçao’s forts as it served as the island’s primary protection structure. Fort Amsterdam is on UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites. Go there to see: The Governor’s Residence, the island’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, numerous government offices, a small museum and the United Protestant Church, both of which remain open to the public.

Fort Beekenburg Built in 1703 in the Caracas Bay, which commanded a panoramic view of the Spanish Water inlet. It was named after Director van Beek, who planned the city’s defense from 1701 to 1704. This fort warded off French and English fleets as well as pirates more than once during the 18th century. Go there to see: Panoramic view of the stunning Caracasbaai and to see the ruins of the former leper colony perched on top of the hill.

Nowadays, it serves as a harbor signal and control tower, regulating the opening and closing of the Pontoon Bridge. Go there to see: The Fort Nassau restaurant and bar with its 18th century appeal. This fine dining restaurant sits on the hilltop overlooking Willemstad in the ruins of a buttressed fort.

Fort Waakzaamheid Built in 1803 this smaller fort,

with its view over Otrobanda, was built to defend the island against a French invasion. In 1804, it fell victim to a 26-day siege by Captain Bligh of “Mutiny on the Bounty” fame. This fort was once converted to a restaurant and is now a popular choice for private parties, receptions and business meetings. Go there to see: During World War II, the Americans mounted guns on the walls, and established barracks and an observation post.

Willemstad’s Otrobanda district. This fort stands between the harbor entrance, sea coast and the former Rifwater. Through the years, Riffort has been home to the Public Works Authority, a police station, and the Boy Scouts. Go there to see: Riffort Village, a shopping center, restaurants, bars, ice-cream & coffee shop and scenic terraces overlooking the harbor.

Waterfort Built in 1634 to defend the outer section of

Willemstad’s Punda district. In 1827 the original structure was replaced by a building with 136 turrets and vaults containing stores, stables, and medical services. This fort accommodated troops during World War II and showcased coastal and anti-aircraft artillery on its walls. Go there to see: Punda’s most popular eateries and terraces overlooking the sea.

Interesting Fact: As a means

of defense, after the Riffort and Waterfort were built, a great big heavy chain was strung across the harbor entrance from one fort to the other. During times of peace and friendly trade, the chain was lowered to the bottom of the harbor, and ships could come and go freely. But the moment there was any hint of an impending threat or invasion, they simply raised the chain to lie just below the surface of the water to prevent any incoming enemy ships. With the heavily buttressed forts on either side of the channel, this would make the harbor literally impenetrable. It would virtually paralyze the enemy invasion with one quick maneuver, often inflicting so much damage to their fleet that they would have to make a hasty retreat. So simple, and yet so very effective! 25

THE ARCHEOLOGICAL MUSEUM This museum provides its visitors with great insight into the lives of the island’s past inhabitants. Their stories are told through the many recovered artifacts on display. THE NUMISMATIC MUSEUM Numismatics is the study of or collection of currency. The exhibit here illustrates the evolution of Antillean currency. After its 2017 hiatus, Curaรงao North Sea Jazz Festival was back with an exciting lineup of artists ready to bring the house down. The festival kicked off on Thursday August 30 with its traditional free concert, this time held at the World Trade Center.

he evening got to a good start when the Puerto Rican reggaeton singer Farruko took the stage. The talented performer rose to fame at age 18 after his debut album, El Talento Del Bloque, shot to the top of the charts. In 2017, he returned with his sixth studio album, TrapXficante, a fusion of reggaeton, pop urban and Latin rap. The party continued with Silvestre Dangond, the Colombian singer and vallenato superstar, who has revamped the traditional musical style from the Caribbean regions of Colombia. The audience was kept on their feet by his melodic rhythms and popular hits. The real party started on Friday August 31 with the performance of the popular R&B singer Jason Derulo, followed by the legendary Patty Labelle and Spiro Gyra, jazz artist Kamasi Washington, reggae super star Damian â€œJr. Gongâ€? Marley and the last minute replacement for the ailing Sean Paul, reggaeton superstar Daddy Yankee. The culmination of the evening was when Sting made his return to the Sam Cooke stage and was joined by Mr. Boombastic himself, singer Shaggy. The unlikely duo recently joined forces and collaborated on an island-inspired album called 44/876.

The final day of the festival was on Saturday, September 1st, with an electrifying kick-off from the legendary singer, Grace Jones. Also gracing us with their talent was Colombian singer Carlos Vives, the legendary Burt Bacharach, Michel Camilo Trio, KC and the Sunshine Band and talented vocalist Cee Lo Green. Everybody gathered at the Sam Cook stage to close off the evening and listen to Christina Aguilera, chanteuse extraordinaire, who has sold more than 43 million records worldwide through her illustrious 20+ year career. Aguilera released her 6th studio album, called Liberation on June 2018. Aguilera tantalized the crowd with her greatest hits and also did many costume changes to ensure a visual and musical spectacle, closing off a memorable Jazz festival that is here to stay.

The harbor was buzzing with excitement and activity as everyone flocked into the city to capture the majestic tall ships with their colorful flags fluttering in the wind, as they entered the scenic Annabaai (Anna Bay). From the crack of dawn, crowds greeted the returning fleet of historic ships of Velas Latinoamérica 2018, as they made their approach into the harbor, providing countless photo opportunities set with the picturesque backdrop.

Sailing In

s part of a goodwill voyage organized by the Chilean navy, initially intended as a celebration of the bicentennial of the first acts of independence in South America, the Velas Latinoamérica is a fleet of tall-ships that tour through different countries in Central and South America, and the Caribbean. Their maiden voyage began in 2010, and with growing popularity, the initiative has expanded to embark upon a 6-month voyage that takes place every four years. The fleet has grown with each expedition to include tall ships representing Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, Uruguay, Mexico, U.S.A., Spain and Portugal. This time around their journey began in Rio de Janeiro in March 2018, with many stops at different ports along the Atlantic coast, circumventing Cape Horn and then continuing up the Pacific coast of South America, crossing the Panama Canal to the Caribbean to visit Curaçao and Santo Domingo, and then culminating in Mexico.

The fleet visited our shores from July 15 July 17, 2018, and Curaçao, with its uniquely historic and picturesque harbor provided, the perfect venue to host these tall ships. With an exciting line up of special activities and performances throughout the 3 days, including a free concert by Oscar de Leon, the event culminated with a spectacular fireworks display that Curaçao does like no other. Surf's Up at

Playa Kanoa!

ack in 1992, Charles Balentina, popularly known as Charlie, got wind that there were some diehards surfing on the north coast at a remote beach called Playa Kanoa. So he went to check things out. After observing the scene and the waves for a few days, he gathered the courage to give it a shot. Despite any folkloric hearsay about the threat of sharks, it was the big waves crashing on to the rugged northern coast that were the only real threat. As he recalls, he really took a pounding that day, but nevertheless he was instantly hooked. That was 26 years ago, and since then, he surfs during most of his free time. Back in the 90's, very narrow and thin surfboards were the trend. These “flipped out” hybrids were fueled by the elite international surfers of the time. However, it was really hard to catch waves here in Curaçao with these thin boards, because the waves were much weaker than what the boards were originally designed for. By 1999, in order to get some extra income while living in Bonaire, Charlie started to design and make his own surfboards. He has built a total of 258 surfboards to this day.

When he moved back to Curaçao in 2003, there were so many people asking him to teach them how to surf, that he decided to start giving surfing lessons in his free time. With a humble beginning of just three old surfboards, he started to give classes every weekend, waves permitting. With a growing reputation on the island as the expert in all things surfing, his business has grown such that, since 2016, both Charlie and his girlfriend, Chanty, decided to quit their jobs and surf full time. They now offer surfing classes with an extensive quiver of surfboards for beginners, intermediates and advanced surfers, plus video analysis, surf tours, custom surfboards, rentals, repairs, accessories, and when the waves are down, they offer SUP and Kayak tours to keep the people salty!

Throughout the years of this special friendship, Curaçao has revealed many of her hidden secrets, and in turn Sheila has been inspired to share them with others to help them embark upon a journey of inner joy and healing… while having a whole lot of fun along the way! As if by destiny, Yogaventure Curaçao was born. Initially offered to the Canadian market, with plans to eventually expand to the greater North American market, these yoga retreats bring visitors to the island who are seeking a different kind of vacation. Already well on her way to discovering all the best attractions that Curaçao has to offer, and no stranger to the ins and outs of life here on the island, Sheila’s engaging energy has afforded her an instant connection with so many of Curaçao’s local inhabitants – so much so, that they have welcomed her as one of their own. For a long time coming, she has been eager to share all of these unique island experiences and warm welcoming friendships with visitors from distant shores.

A long-time yoga practitioner herself, Sheila has vast experience with the practice and its healing powers. She chose to create a central theme around the first 7-day retreat, with each day devoted to awakening one of the seven sacred Chakras. According to ancient yoga, Tantrik traditions, the seven chakras are the energy centers in our bodies aligned from the base of the spine through to the top of our head. The common belief holds that often in our daily course of life, many of these chakras become blocked. Re-opening them leads to a level of self-awareness wherein body, mind and soul are connected. And Sheila could think of no better destination to help others achieve this type of connection, than Curaçao. The first of this series of Yogaventure retreats, held in May 2018, offered a healthy balance between relaxation and meditation, and a wide variety of yoga and fitness experiences integrated into some of the best attractions on the island to showcase her hidden gems. Held at the unique Ananda Resort, tucked away in the Banda Bou area, guests had time to relax and reflect as they kicked off their shoes in the beautifully appointed villas and landscaped grounds of the resort which offers many different areas that are perfect for meditation and yoga, including a labyrinth garden. Each day was greeted with a yoga session focused on one of the daily chakras. Throughout the week, the ‘Yogaventurers’ indulged in healthy Ayurvedic meals at the resort and were treated to classes from a few different local yoga instructors.

hen Events Curaçao’s very own Director, Sheila Botton, first visited Curaçao in 2008, she was completely enchanted by the island’s alluring beauty and healing energy. And like so many other visitors to her shores, Sheila, felt an instant connection with Curaçao and has been tirelessly promoting the island ever since. Sheila herself, exudes an effervescent beauty that is only embellished by her inner sense of well-being. She approaches life with a joie-de-vivre and a passion for sharing her insightful wisdom with others. It didn’t take much to realize that these two ‘ladies’ were meant for each other.

Realizing the great potential that CuraĂ§ao holds as a wellness tourist destination, Sheila Botton has embarked upon a recent project to host a series of yoga retreats here on the island.

Drawing from an infinite well of energy and enthusiasm, Sheila planned an exciting itinerary that introduced her guests to some of the best spots on the island geared towards reawakening the chakra-of-the-day.

n the first day, Root Chakra Day, the guests arrived and settled in. They had a chance to explore the beautiful grounds of Ananda Resort and reflect on the journey that they were about to embark upon. They culminated the day with a light yoga session focusing on awakening the Root Chakra, planting their feet as they charted their intentions for the week ahead.

The rest of the afternoon was spent relaxing at the pool and getting to know each other better, until the group joined with Leticia once again for a Sunset Yoga session and an Ayurvedic dining experience at Hofi Cas Cora. This unique spot, is a quaintly restored Landhuis (estate home), that has been transformed into a farm-to-table restaurant, nestled among a picturesque organic farm.

On the second day, Sacral Chakra Day, after joining in a yoga class with Sheila, their first wellness activity was a wellbeing vision board workshop guided by Korra Juliana-Pietersz. This unique workshop empowered the Yogaventurers to set their intentions visually, helping them achieve their personal goals, both during the retreat, and throughout their lifeâ€™s journey. Afterwards, local yoga instructor and Ayurvedic chef, Leticia Duran, led the group in an Ayurvedic cooking class to learn more about balancing nutritional needs while using mainly local produce. Leticia shared her passion for the many holistic benefits that CuraĂ§ao has to offer to create a wellness lifestyle.

On Solar-plexus Chakra Day, the Yogaventurers enjoyed a morning on the beach at the luxurious Santa Barbara Resort participating in a Stand-up Paddlebaord yoga class conducted by Angela van Keulen. At first, some of the participants hesitated in fear of falling off their boards, but the glittering blue waters proved irresistible and everyone pushed past their inhibitions and connected with their daily chakra to discover their own inner strength. The calm shallow bay provided the perfect setting for first timers and they all really enjoyed the experience laughing out loud and encouraging each other whenever they fell off their SUP boards.

Heart Chakra Day started with a walking journey through the Caves with Ina Martina. She guided the Yogaventurers through the process of releasing and clearing waves of old blocked energy to welcome powerful, new healing energies. Following this wilderness adventure filled with chant, laughter and emotions, lunch was served at the top the historical Fort Nassau restaurant, offering striking views of the harbor, the city’s bridges, the beautiful Caribbean Sea and island vistas from east to west as far as the eye could see. Refueled, the group enjoyed the afternoon with a walking tour of Willemstad. They visited the Emanuel Mikve Synagogue and museum, the oldest synagogue in continuous operation in the western hemisphere and topped off the day with the ambiance of a Punda Vibes evening with spectacular fireworks in the harbor while dining at the waterfront of the historical De Gouverneur Restaurant. On Throat Chakra Day, the Yogaventurers were prepared with some early morning balancing poses with Sheila before heading out to Caracasbaii, greeted onboard a catamaran by the captain and his animated crew from Bounty Adventures. They spent the day sailing, sunbathing, relaxing, swimming and snorkeling in the clear tropical waters. Some of the yogaventurers had never snorkeled before. The thrill of the unknown coupled with letting go was an eye-opening experience for them! It wasn't long before the crew called them back on board to enjoy a delicious buffet lunch and open bar to quench their appetites. This stunning day had everyone enchanted! To start off Third-eye Chakra Day, the Yogaventurers joined up with Bootcamp Curaçao for a vigorous workout at Fort Beekenberg overlooking the inspirational turquoise of the Caracasbaai waters below. The one-and-a-half-hour intensive session included a challenging parkour circuit. Close to 30 bootcamp participants joined forces to carry rope, logs and car batteries up to the fort, to then continue with push-ups, sit ups and other strength training exercises both in and out of the sea. After the high intensity Bootcamp Curaçao training session, all the participants joined Sheila for a restorative yoga flow on the beach. The only thing scheduled for the rest of the day was total relaxation at the beach, although we managed to meet up with yoga instructors Leticia and Adriana, to squeeze in some playful Acroyoga on the sand at sunset.

On the last day, Crown Chakra Day, a hiking tour was organized in Shete Boca Park, where rugged windswept cliffs greet the crashing waves of the north coast of the island to form hidden caves along the coastline. They stepped directly into the mouth of a cavern on the very edge and watched the surf roll in as they released prayers. Boca Tabla also features a rocky area where the Yogaventurers created balanced rock stacks and made wishes, infusing positive energy into every stone. Following these awe inspiring moments, they ate a delicious lunch at Landhuis Misje, a historical plantation house transformed into a charming restaurant serving tasty local dishes. Afterwards they visited the Lagun Blou Resort for a well-deserved treat relaxing and sunbathing in the infinity pool overlooking the breathtaking azure of the Caribbean Sea. It was inspiring to see the transformations of each and every one of the Yogaventure guests as they progressed through the seven days towards the culminating goal of a more energized and connected self. Some of the guests, started off the retreat with a certain sense of apprehension, only to surprise themselves with a newfound feeling of confidence. Others, weighed down by life’s challenges, felt the weight lift off their shoulders as they regained that carefree feeling of joy. Each of the guests embarked upon their individual journey of self-discovery. With Sheila’s infinite well of positive energy, enthusiasm and wisdom, she guided them through the beautiful healing process and the fun-loving experiences that Curaçao has to offer, so that they could discover a renewed level of connection and selfawareness. No doubt, they all boarded their flights with that healthy tropical glow and sand between their toes, but they also had a twinkle in their eyes and a certain skip in their step.

ust 15 miles off the southeastern coast of Curaçao lies a Dutch Caribbean gem – Klein Curaçao. This small uninhabited island is best known for its historic lighthouse, white sand and calm turquoise waters. But not far offshore and hundreds of feet beneath the clear

blue surface lie largely unexplored deep ocean reefs containing secrets to our changing ocean. This past summer a collaborative team of scientists, adventure seekers, filmmakers and maritime experts traveled aboard the 39m research vessel Chapman, with a state-of-the-art manned submersible, the Curasub, on a mission to explore this deep blue frontier together.

his expedition was the first in a series led by Uncharted Blue, a new platform connecting scientists, explorers, and marine technology to forward scientific discovery of uncharted ocean destinations together. For this Deep Dutch Caribbean expedition series, Uncharted Blue partnered with Chapman Expeditions and Naturalis Biodiversity Center to bring adventure seekers like you closer to this pioneering science more than ever before. Given its diverse marine life, dramatic depth profile and limited human stressors, Klein Curaçao is an ideal destination for ocean discovery. A team of scientists from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Smithsonian's National Museum for Natural History, and Naturalis Biodiversity Center led the scientific mission using the Curasub to explore the island’s uncharted depths down to 1000ft. The interdisciplinary team collected baseline observations of marine life and reef systems at various depth zones and mapped out priority research sites for continued discovery.

Luc Hardy, member of the Explorers Club of New York, recalls his experience, “What an exciting opportunity it was to support and participate in this scientific expedition. Exploring unknown parts of the deep sea with the superbly qualified and diverse science team was truly fascinating. Now I look forward to sharing this experience and our findings with a broad audience to build awareness of these deep reefs and their importance.” Viewers worldwide will have the chance to see the science in action when a short film of the expedition, Curaçao’s Deep Frontier, is released in early 2019. Despite containing the most diverse and unexplored ecosystems on our planet, more than 95% of our ocean remains unexplored today. The Deep Dutch Caribbean expedition series will support better understanding of this region’s deep reefs and their importance in the greater ocean ecosystem. And the adventure is just beginning. With follow-up expeditions planned in 2019, ocean enthusiasts are invited to join Uncharted Blue as they explore this deep blue frontier. Does your child love the ocean? Scuba diving may be right for them!

It is possible that your child or teenager, despite his or her desire, has some apprehension about breathing under water. This is a perfectly normal feeling and it takes time and patience to build confidence. This is where the role of a scuba diving instructor becomes important. You should assess your childâ€™s maturity, attention span, reasoning skills, and swimming ability before you get them started in a scuba diving program. If your child is already comfortable as a "fish in the sea", most of the work is done. The age defined by The Professional Association of Dive Instructors (PADI) states that children as young as 10 years of age can begin scuba diving classes. At 14, physiological and psychological development allows the young diver to enter the adult diving course: 6 meters max. However, it is only from the age of 18 that the prerogatives of an autonomous diver can be granted. Some instructors believe that the younger a child learns to dive, the better. They will be more comfortable in the water, and quickly learn the ropes.

When children begin scuba classes, in addition to classroom or e-learning work, they are introduced to the gear; they learn how to set it up and what each piece does. A good instructor will work with your child at a speed that's comfortable for him or her, making sure they master every skill. A good instructor will take the time to point out and explain each step they are about to take underwater, like clearing their ears and how to use the BC's inflate/deflate valve. They will learn how to breathe through a regulator, and get comfortable breathing underwater, They will also be introduced to the concepts of neutral buoyancy, being properly weighted, so that they will be able to descend correctly and safely. They can receive their open-water dive certification in as few as three or four days by completing the classroom portion online or at a local dive shop. Depending on the length of your vacation, you can spread it out over a period of weeks. Once your child learns the safe and correct way to dive, safety will always be in the forefront of their mind and they will gain confidence quickly. As an added bonus, scuba diving also teaches a child math skills, physics, and natural science, which can make them more critical thinkers in the classroom. Kids who learn how to scuba dive will quickly link conservation and habitat preservation to their newfound skills. Once they see the beautiful underwater world and all the marine species that inhabit it, they will strive to keep it a clean and safe place for their new ocean friends. It is likely they will become proactive in their community and teach their friends and family the responsibility of keeping our planet clean.

Nurturing your childâ€™s natural curiosity will instill them with a sense of value and responsibility for this planet. As they say, the children are our future.

hildren are curious by nature and have an innate passion for exploration. This urge can be met with fins, a mask and a snorkel during holidays by the sea! Well-equipped, these little adventurers can observe life underwater, and even learn to free dive. From these first experiences, the desire to continue discovering what lies beneath the sea's surface is born.

Most of the teens in the photo above recently learned to scuba dive with Ocean Encounters and immediately joined Project Aware to take action and make a difference. How? By removing debris that is not only unsightly but also dangerous to sea life, and hazardous to human health. Marine animals become entangled in debris or mistake it for food – often with fatal results. Divers, swimmers and beach goers can also be directly harmed by encounters with marine debris or its toxins. More than 250 million tons of plastic is estimated to make its way into our oceans by 2025.

Every day, trash enters the sea at an alarming rate. So this is how a community of young divers are activating against the onslaught of trash! The Project Aware mission is to connect passion for ocean adventure with the purpose of marine conservation and a vision to restore a clean, healthy ocean for marine life and for the communities who depend upon it. The “Adopt A Dive Site” initiative is committed to conserve and protect dive sites from marine debris by conducting monthly Project AWARE “Dive Against Debris” clean-up.

Top Dive Sites & Centers of Curaçao 1- PLAYA KALKI – GO WEST DIVING Explore this full-service dive operation to one of Curaçao’s best shore dive sites, Alice in Wonderland. 6- SANTA CRUZ This is a great spot to use as a base for accessing the island’s best westside boat dives as well as the nearby Playa Santu Pretu and the world famous Blue Room. The large, sandy public beach has many free picnic tables and tiki huts available and several boat operators will happily take you to explore.

11- DIVE BLUE BAY – THE WALL Accessible directly from the shore, lies the seemingly endless wall reef at Blue Bay Resort. Beginning very close to the surface and continuing in a vertical slope to a depth of over 30 meters, this famous house reef is not to be missed. A full-service dive shop is conveniently located right on the beach.

7- CAS ABAO This great beach has full facilities and an on-site dive shop. The reef is a short swim out across calm waters and has many colorful fish and coral. You can spot sea horses and possibly even frog fish.

12- SUPERIOR PRODUCER This famous cargo ship, which sank off Curaçao’s coast in 1977, is the site of one of the island’s most popular dives. Roughly 30 meters below the surface, this massive wreck looms like a living ghost, brimming with aquatic life.

8- PORTO MARIE This is a wonderful fullservice dive center situated on one of Curaçao’s most beautiful fully-equipped beaches. The unique double reef is accessible directly from the shore. You can cruise through large schools of Blue Tang and curious Trunk Fish who are exploring the man-made habitat. 9- DAAIBOOI This secluded spot is home to a variety of marine plant species including star, pillar and brain coral. You may spot a rarelyseen pod of squid swimming amongst the underwater forest.

e all have a natural curiosity for what lives in our seas and oceans but many of us haven’t yet had the opportunity to come into direct contact with any natural marine life or to even get a real live glimpse of the underwater world! In spite of our fascination, the world is faced with an environmental crisis that threatens the very existence of this greatly neglected realm. Thankfully, marine conservation has become a very hot topic and just about everyone has at least heard about it. The Curaçao Sea Aquarium offers a chance for its visitors to learn more about the marine environment and the importance of its protection. Interactive experiences give you the opportunity to learn more about our underwater world and marine conservation. This is a truly enriching experience that educates us all through fun and rewarding activities for both adults and kids. After all, fostering compassion and appreciation for nature and wildlife from a young age is nothing less than crucial for any child’s development. With a variety of different exciting presentations and live demonstrations at the Curaçao Sea Aquarium, they fulfill their mission of educating visitors about the importance of caring for and respecting the marine environment.

The Curaçao Sea Aquarium Park is located right at the edge of the sea and is here to inspire anyone, from any generation, who has a life-long passion for marine life.

ithin hexagon-shaped structures are housed large aquariums and displays, showcasing the flora and fauna of the Caribbean Sea surrounding Curaçao. The Curaçao Sea Aquarium boasts a unique open water system which pumps fresh seawater into all tanks and returns it to the sea through overflows. There is no need for any filters or chemicals.

But what else is in store for a day of fun at the park?

You can help feed the Caribbean flamingos that have been rescued and rehabilitated at the Sea Aquarium. Then moments later, enjoy the sea lions’ daily presentations hosted by the sea lion crew and perhaps even get a ‘fishy’ sea lion kiss. A few steps away you will find another lagoon at the Animal Encounters area, where you can experience feeding and observing amazing marine creatures such as lemon sharks, nurse sharks and stingrays while snorkeling, diving or watching them from the underwater observatory.

Whatever your age, there’s an amazing, rewarding and educational experience around every corner at the Curaçao Sea Aquarium Park.

It’s interesting to know that the free flow of seawater through an open system, like the one at the Curaçao Sea Aquarium Park, generates and disperses seawater directly to all the lagoons and aquariums. There are no chemicals or filters used in the entire park. The overflow of the seawater goes right back into the ocean, and large pipes suck seawater back into the lagoons and aquariums. This amazingly simple system ensures that there is always the perfect amount of nutrients and microorganisms to feed the small fish. As a matter of fact, sometimes new little critters appear in larva stage in some of the lagoons and aquariums and grow to adult stage! Most of the time though, thanks to the overflow, the eggs or larva will go back to sea to repopulate the reefs around the island. 61

Dolphin Dream Come True by Sheila Botton

s you wander out to the outer perimeter of the the Sea Aquarium Park property, you will discover Dolphin Academy with several free-flowing seawater lagoons. These are dedicated areas for dolphin training presentations and all sorts of customized interactive dolphin experiences where participants can choose an activity tailored to their personal swimming skills. One of the most amazing programs that they offer is the Dolphins-in-Depth Course where comprehensive class work is blended with daily sessions in the water with these beautiful marine mammals. A certification card is awarded at the completion of each of two levels. With all the amazing things to experience at the Curaçao Sea Aquarium Park, this was one program that I simply could not resist – not that I even stood a chance against my kids’ persistent pleas to participate along with them. Back in 2012, my daughter, then aged 12, persuaded me to sign her up for a Level 1 Assistant Dolphin Training Program for kids. And yes! She received her certification as an Assistant Dolphin Trainer. And yes! It was absolutely awesome. And yes! It was the highlight of her trip. This experience only fueled my desire to participate in the program. And now, a few years later, I accompanied my daughter and my teenage son as we embarked upon this amazing educational journey. For two full days at the Dolphin Academy, we participated in the Level 1 Dolphins-in-Depth Course for adults and teens and completely immersed ourselves in the exciting and rewarding life of a professional dolphin trainer. We were welcomed into the classroom-office of George Kieffer, Director of Dolphins and Programs at Dolphin Academy. He is one of the most committed and experienced dolphin trainers the world over. During these interesting sessions, guided with visual presentations, he talked to us about the historical myths and legends of dolphin lore throughout human civilization, taught us about their evolution, anatomy and behavior; and of course, highlighted the importance of their highly developed senses and echolocation capabilities. Between classroom lessons, we participated and assisted in training sessions and had

playtime with the dolphins too. We spent time with them in the water, interacting up close with these intelligent and playful mammals. We learned how to use hand signals to ask the dolphins for various trained behaviors and aerial displays. It’s fascinating to see how the trainers use positive rewards and affection to establish strong trusting relationships with these majestic dolphins. The three essential tools for training a dolphin are: hand motions to request a specific behavior; a high pitched whistle to signal, “Yes, you did it. Great job!” and positive reinforcement with rewards like fish, toys and playtime with their trainers. It sounds easier than it is and I now have a higher appreciation for the dedicated trainers at Dolphin Academy. On the second day, for our grand finale, we could assist the trainers during a training demonstration for the public. Never forgetting the amazing experience she had just a few years ago as a child in the Assistant Trainer Program’s Level 1, my daughter was thrilled to share the experience the second time around with her younger brother and myself! Each trainer was assigned a dolphin at the platform, where we could showcase what we had learned to communicate. One by one the dolphins jumped in the air, glided backwards along the surface using only their tail fluke, and vocalized excitedly! What looks so easy to the audience is quite challenging behind the scenes. There is a full professional staff with a lot of tasks and responsibilities and tireless commitment in maintaining a clean environment, nutritious diet, health and happiness for these beautiful dolphins. In spite of all this hard work, it is incredibly rewarding. These majestic dolphins were so responsive and delighted in the communication we were having. The enthusiasm and energy shared between dolphin and trainer is hard to describe and something you simply must experience for yourself.

Taking a culinary journey through Curaçao is like taking a historic tour of the migrations and foreign influences that have shaped our cosmopolitan culture through the centuries.

ur journey starts with the typical ‘krioyo’ [creole] cuisine with its roots deeply entrenched in the African culture (and in particular, West Africa), introduced at a time when slavery was all too prevalent. With its typical dishes like ‘guiambo’ (pronounced yiambo), a hearty soup made of okra, salted meat and seafood, it is often accompanied with ‘funchi’, a side dish similar to polenta, as corn was one of the few crops that seemed to thrive on the desert island. Have you seen herds of goats? Kabritu stoba, stewed goat, is a popular dish, as well as ‘komkomber stoba’ (stewed cucumbers). Of course every Caribbean island must boast of its own mysterious aphrodisiac, and here too, we have the elusive ‘sopi di yuana’ [iguana soup]. And yes… it tastes like chicken. The Dutch colonials also brought their dishes, and you can find typical Dutch treats such as ‘biterballen’, ‘krokets’ and ‘frikandel’ on virtually every street corner. Fresh ‘haring’ (raw herring) is another Dutch delight that is flown in regularly from Holland. No need to mention the famous Dutch Gouda and Edam cheeses that are prevalent. As a matter of fact, the locals on the island have taken a great thing and made it even better. They have invented ‘keshi yena’, an entire gouda cheese stuffed with meat or fish and lots of local seasonings. As we continue our journey through history, we are introduced to Latin American cuisine as migrants from Venezuela, Colombia and Brazil settled here. Famous dishes like ‘empanas’ (empanadas) and ‘arepas’ became a common part of the local cuisine. ‘Ayakas’ and ‘pan de jamón’ are also an integral part of the Christmas specialties that everyone enjoys in Curaçao.

Neighboring Suriname was also a Dutch colony, and with that came the introduction of many typical Surinamese dishes to Curaçao. Due to their large Indian, Chinese and Indonesian populations, there are many different dishes that are influenced by those cultures, such as ‘roti’, ‘nasi goreng’ and ‘rijstafel’ [rice table]. The perfect marriage of all of these cultures is illustrated by the ‘patat met satesaus’ or ‘batata ku satesaus’, which is essentially French fries (a dutch street food staple), served with an Indonesian peanut sauce. The local cuisine has also benefitted from the Jewish population, who fled religious persecution in Portugal and settled on the island. This community has grown to become a major contributor to the cultural and business growth of the country, and their culinary traditions have blended in with those of the island. As Portuguese immigrants came to Curaçao, initially as indentured laborers and farmers, they also brought with them their local delights such as ‘bakijou’ [bacalao] and ‘marisko’ [similar to ceviche]. As times progressed and Curaçao became a magnet for shipping and trade, many other cultures and cuisines found their way to our shores. Each infusing the local cuisine with their flavors, they have shaped it into a complex variety of tastes and abundant flavors. With a very sophisticated restaurant scene here on the island, your trip to Curaçao would be amiss if you didn’t indulge!

Cut meat into 2-inch cubes and soak overnight in water, in the refrigerator. Next morning, discard water. In large pot, cook meat cubes with water over medium heat until meat is tender. Set aside. Peel plantain, and cut into 3-inch pieces. Skin sweet potato, and cut into 3-inch cubes. Remove hard skin, seeds, and stringy portion from pumpkin, and cut into 3-inch cubes. In a large pot, heat oil and butter, sauté the onion, add celery, cinnamon sticks, allspice and cloves. Add water, meat, and cook for 10-minutes, then add the plantain, sweet potato and pumpkin. Cook over medium heat, until vegetables are done. Return vegetables to sauce, stir lightly. Add sugar according to taste.
