Every term we produce our very own school magazine: 'The Endeavour', which aims to highlight all our key events from this term.

We celebrate all our successes as an academy and highlight staff and pupil awards.

'The Endeavour' is a brilliant way to share all the good things that happen in our academy with the local community and beyond.

Our mission is to build a community of cleverer and kinder students. We are on our way! This has been the most enjoyable term of my career to date as we have achieved so much. Last year, we laid solid foundations for year 2 and as a result we have improved behaviour and attendance significantly. Exclusions have reduced by 92% when comparing the first term in 2017. Similarly, attendance has risen above national (94.6%) to 95.2%. This is down to the efforts and hard work of everyone involved. It could not happen without students making a sustained effort to come into school every day; parents insisting that their children get to school and staff following up on any

student who has any absence from school. Naturally, our aim is for all students to have 100% attendance and come to school every day.

This year, I asked staff to increase the amount that they are rewarding students. I am very glad to say that this has happened. In fact, for every sanction issued, we are issuing 7 rewards. The next step is to increase rewards yet further and reduce sanctions. All our staff have been trained in the art of catching our students doing the right thing. We ask our teachers to spend more time praising and highlighting when our students get it right. This has had a very positive impact as more students want to be seen getting it right, so copy good behaviour.

One of the highlights of the term was our celebrations of Black Britons who have made and continue to make history. On the last day of the first half of term, all the staff wore a T Shirt, proudly emblazoned with the words: ‘BLACK BRITONS MAKING HISTORY’. This was coupled with a series of assemblies on the contributions of black Britons to our country, ably led by Mr Morrissey, our Associate Assistant Principal. We also created a display of some of the most powerful and influential black people in Britain today. It has been a privilege to ask so many of our students what they intend to achieve to be the next ‘face’ on a future display.

Another great moment was when many of our Year 11 girls had the privilege of hearing Michelle Obama speak at the royal festival Hall. She was an inspiration to us all. Her self-belief; sense of humanity and level-headed outlook left our students feeling excited about what they might achieve in life.

This is the fourth edition of our school magazine and readers will get a good sense of what has been going on in and out of the classroom.

The academy has been buzzing with activity and energy. I am left feeling very proud of all our students and staff.

I would also like to offer a huge thank you to all our parents for their continued support.

Michelle Obama inspires EGA students at London's Royal Festival Hall On Monday 3rd December 2018, students at EGA attended the UK exclusive event 'Becoming: An evening with Michelle Obama', at the Royal Festival Hall, hosted by acclaimed novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

Our students watched and listened to two phenomenal women converse about Mrs Obama's highly anticipated memoir 'Becoming'.

Throughout the evening Mrs Obama shared life lessons, words of encouragement and life experiences that have propelled her over the years to succeed.

Her words moved some of our students to tears and brought a new sense of purpose and meaning to how important education is to them all.

Each student received a free copy of Mrs Obama's memoir!

It truly was an inspirational evening.

Pamula Goncalves, Year 11 shares her review about the evening: As a young woman aspiring to work in education and being brought up with a conscious mind-set of the unjust world around me, I proudly state that it has been an honour and privilege watching Michele Obama. She led us into a world of profound realisation and admiration with her empowering storytelling.

This left the Royal Festival Hall captivated.

I'm more than grateful for the opportunity offered by my school, in which other students and I, had been given the chance of hearing Michele Obama at her “Becoming” book tour interview.

She spoke about her highly anticipated new memoir, welcoming the audience into her world and sharing with us her deep, humbling, intense experiences that have shaped her from her very own childhood days, till present times. Entering the Royal Festival Hall filled me with an overwhelming excitement about what to expect from this unique experience.

As we came to an end, I was passionately touched as she left us with the reminder that no matter who we’re surrounded by, each one of us is held responsible for our own success story.

She has given me the hope, strength and dedication to make a difference in a world she works so hard to improve.

Over the course of the month of October we have proudly celebrated black people's contributions to British society.

It began with a series of assemblies delivered by Mr Morrissey to every year group across the course of the week about black history.

Looking out at the students, you could see that this meant a great deal to them and was extremely successful in launching and building knowledge amongst the student body.

During Science lessons for key stage 3, students were taught about the differing proteins found in foods from the Caribbean and they conducted related experiments .

The highlight being the visit of Linton Kwesi Johnson (pictured above).

This has led to the Science team considering how to incorporate more of these types of opportunities into lessons as the excitement and engagement in learning that was witnessed was clear.

The second living poet and the only black poet to be published in the Penguin modern classics series . He is a true giant of modern poetry in this country. He spoke to some of our year 13 , year 11 and year 10 students.

In Geography, students created flags and masks to celebrate their culture and identity. During art lessons there has been a focus on producing portraits of people of colour and exploring the use of pastels to produce differing skin tones. Students have been encouraged to work on power point presentations and research information about influential black Britons that will be shared during assemblies and form time.

His words were hard hitting and honest speaking to the hearts and minds of our young people. The message that stood out was that black history month isn’t about one month and it isn’t just black history.

The enthusiasm shown by the students has been brilliant and a reminder that there are many ways in which to help our students access learning and build skills.

The creation of the ‘Black Britons Making History’ display outside the principal’s office has been a real success with many students stopping to look at the names and feeling duly inspired when doing so.

We are celebrating a forgotten history of British culture.

This type of experience is one that should help us all think about our own experiences and those of our students. He made a huge impression on staff and students alike.

On the last day of the first half of the Autumn Term all staff wore a shirt to celebrate and show solidarity in the idea that we need to recognise the part played in our country by black Britons. A small gesture but a powerful one.

This is all part of the journey towards creating cleverer and kinder children.

100 Years of Remembering World War 1 1914 - 1918

Evelyn Grace observes two minutes silence in commemoration of remembrance day In honour of the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day (also known as Remembrance Day) all our students and staff came together in an act of respect and humility to remember the sacrifices, the displays of bravery and the lives of our armed forces personnel that fought in the First World War and died in the line of duty.

Highlights of the ceremony included: A momentous display of respect by the entire school as all stood together, lined up in single file.

Staff at EGA spread cheer across the academy through random acts of kindness One of the central pillars of Ark Evelyn Grace Academy’s mission is to enable our students to become cleverer and kinder.

We thought that it would be a lot of fun to endeavour to be kinder ourselves – especially in a week where we would be becoming cleverer as a result of marking all of our students’ assessments!

Each member of staff was invited to take part in ‘Kindness Week’, where we each had to perform Acts of Random Kindness to the person that we were nominated to support.

This meant that we had anonymous chocolates, bottles of wine, bunches of flowers, special cards and a whole bunch of other kind acts spread across the week.

It lifted everyone – the person who gave and the person who received and made our school an even better place to work in, knowing that the majority of staff were performing acts of random kindness to each other.

It certainly made us reflect on our journey towards fulfilling our mission and the steps that we take towards making Ark Evelyn Grace Academy a cleverer and kinder place.

AlphaApps at COMPTIA and GIF. In the previous academic year, Evelyn Grace Academy students took part in the TeenTech Awards where three of our groups and one of our teachers were nominated for awards in the finals.

Since successfully winning at the TeenTech Awards, The AlphaApps (Leynner, Charles and Bruno, pictured above) made such a great impression, they were invited to talk on the main stage at COMPTIA.

COMPTIA is a technology conference where CEOs from major technology companies gather to share new products and ideas.

Companies such as Google and IBM were in attendance.

The boys had a table at the event where visitors came up to them to find out more about their product, this was then followed by their presentation on the main stage.

This presentation made great impressions on visitors where some took to Twitter to talk about how impressive the boys were.

The CEO of Microsoft, Cindy Rose, who came on stage after them, said:

“How the hell am I going to follow that?”.

The AlphaApps were then invited to talk on stage at The Global Innovation Forum.

An event where creatives share their ideas on a stage in London.

With hundreds of influential creatives in the room the boys took to the stage after being introduced by tv show host Maggie Philbin. They presented their idea which many described as “inspirational” and “very professional”.

The boys scored a 4.4 out of 5 approval rating, ranking them as one of the best presentations at an event where they shared the stage with people from Google, IBM, Twitter and more.

EGA’s first ever Crest Gold award winners The STEM team “The AlphaApps” have been awarded the honourable CREST Gold Award this term for their Augmented Reality product “Big T Adventures”.

This achievement is the 4th national award that the AlphaApps have won since they first were formed by team leader Leynner Caicedo in 2017.

The collection now includes a TeenTech Award, CREST Silver Award, Jack Petchey Awards and now CREST Gold.

The CREST organisation awards brilliant STEM projects all year round with their most prestigious awards being the CREST Bronze, Silver and Gold awards.

The Gold award is reserved for A Level students as the expectation of research and development is the equivalent of an A Level coursework/project.

To achieve a CREST Gold for a project that was completed before even finishing Year 10 is a huge accomplishment! We are very proud of EGA’s first CREST Gold winners!

TEENTECH AWARDS LAUNCHES WITH YEARS 7, 8 AND 9!

It’s that time of year again! The TeenTech Awards program is set to officially start in January 2019.

For the first time the program is being offered to all of Key Stage 3.

Kicking off the competition early is a new Year 7 team currently consisting of Ethan, Louie and Filipe. They are currently looking into tackling the problem of knife crime.

Inspired by last year’s winners, Presley in Year 9 is leading the team of George and Robert to bring Augmented Reality as part of in-car entertainment

TeenTech 2018 winner Leynner said: “Before doing TeenTech I didn’t know what to do as a career, now I want to have my own business and see myself as a young entrepreneur. ”

HERITAGE

INITIATIVE

In the spring the Art Department worked with 'Our Hut' on a heritage project. The project began in 2015 and then was explored again in 2018 with two year 7 groups.

This project allowed the students to investigate architecture in the local Brixton area. Students also go a chance to exhibit their work in a local library within the Lambeth area, as well as at the end of year GCSE exhibition.

The students were encouraged to explore the history of Brixton, do observational drawings, collages of buildings and explore the local landmarks of Brixton.

They also had the opportunity to work with a local architectural company in Brixton: Squire and Partners.

The Final outcome was a light scape which lights up on the wall.

The Art Department would like to thank Judy, Lucy and Suzanna for all their hard work and really giving our year 7 students such a wonderful opportunity to explore this project.

The Brixton Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) is a Heritage Lottery (HLF) and Lambeth Council funded regeneration project which aims to preserve and enhance the unique architecture and historic character of Electric Avenue, whilst stimulating economic regeneration and raising knowledge, awareness of and participation in local heritage.

EGA students participating in the Ebony Horse Club Enrichment Program.

A group of our very own EGA students ranging from Years 7 to 9 had the privilege of being a part of the Ebony Horse Riding Club. The 8 week program consisted of our students getting down and dirty in the stables, as well as learning to become professional horse riders in the making.

After a few tears and overcoming of fears, our young people got back on the horse (literally!) and have never looked back since. This program is a great way for our students to gain life skills, increase their confidence and have fun, all at the same time! Staff at EGA teach students how to make a packed lunch As part of our efforts to enhance lunchtime provision within the academy, some of our support staff have been teaching students how to cook and prepare a packed lunch for themselves using basic ingredients.

Over this term students have learnt how to make pancakes, sandwiches and nutritious smoothies.

Year 11 GCSE class take a field trip to Chiswick pier: Â On Monday 29th October 2018 and Friday 2nd November 2018, our Year 11 Geographers went to Chiswick pier field studies centre to carry out their physical field work on the river Thames.

They collected data for their field work which contributes towards their paper 3. They collected data through depth readings and pebble analysis.

All students and staff had a great afternoon and worked hard, even Angee who nearly nearly got taken by the tide!

Students from Years 7, 8 and 9 undertake a 5-week programme exploring different careers within a hospital Article written by Louie Greenhill, Year 7

A chosen group of us from each year group, undertook a 5-week programme giving us an insight into the NHS and its many different careers; other than the most commonly presumed career of a doctor.

I thought it would be about the role of a doctor, but I found out it was for a 5-week period, looking at 5 different jobs! I knew I was going to enjoy it as it was a wonderful opportunity to learn something new about the NHS. During our school sessions we looked at the following careers: 1) Doctor Dan 2) Radiologist Rosy – CT Scan multiple images not just one and builds to be whole video 3) Surgeon Samina – stitching up using fake skin but proper needles 4) Pharmacy Phil – Counting out pills and find out how they help people with problems (continued on the next page)....

5) Last session: Visit to Kings College London Hospital When I found out we was going to Kings College London I was very excited as it was my first trip at EGA. I went to the KCL across the bridge not even the one around the corner and I thought â€˜â€ŚI might go here one day.'

At KCL I heard not just from students (Student ambassadors who were Year 2, 3 and 4 medical students) but also from people who worked there in full-time jobs; and people who taught the students also.

We learnt about student life and finances. We had lunch and we were shown what physiotherapist Pippa might do with a patient at the learning centre.

She showed us six activities that a physio might use to treat a patient. (continued on the next page)...

I have learnt from this experience that in university there is a lot of financial aid available, as it does cost a lot to study for a career within the NHS. However this experience has increased my desire to want to go to university and even more so to study a subject that leans towards working in a hospital environment. This experience showed me that a hospital is an exciting place to be and work in.

If I could work in a hospital I would choose to be a pharmacist, as you work along side lots of different people. I think as a pharmacist you can help people more, for example you can give more support to helping people to stop smoking.

I think being able to help people stop something they desperately want to stop makes me feel good. I find joy in knowing I have helped someone.

A special 'Thank You' to all the KCL & EGA members of staff who facilitated in making this experience a great success.

Prince's Trust Group

Since September 2018 EGA has been delivering the prestigious Prince’s Trust Achieve Award.

The Prince's Trust connects young people with the world of work and equips them with the transferable skills and knowledge they need to succeed with their next steps.

As a project for their portfolio, our Year 11 prince's trust students created a Prince’s Trust board illustrating the various places EGA students can access careers information.

Through this project some of our students have gained wonderful work experiences too!

Ibraheem Benmeriem (Yr13), gives his review: The Yr13 English Literature class ventured out one evening in late September to watch ‘King Lear’, performed at The Duke of York theatre, but shown at The Ritzy cinema in a live broadcast.

From a grand oak table, an ageing King reveals his “darker purpose” and splits his kingdom between his three daughters. As his grip on society dwindles, a series of secret correspondences are revealed, ultimately securing the authoritarian's fate.

In his demented state, every action seemed calculated and McKellan clearly delivers a masterclass.

Munby’s production had modern aspects which gave insight to the Year 13 English Literature class, but more importantly it highlighted and reinforced the absurdities and travesties of modern leadership.

The Year 13 class left dumbfounded and speechless, as the West End yet again provided a memorable performance, and this Lear would definitely set the bar for those to come.

With a superlative performance from Sir Ian McKellan at its centre, Shakespeare’s ‘King Lear’ is made in to a dark and sinister production which truly depicts the unrelenting pain and struggle of a powerhungry king, with a tendency towards irrationality.

By watching and experiencing Jonathan Munby’s production I can tell that as Lear descended in to madness due to ‘filial

Year 13 Geography class travel to Dorset: This term, our Year 13 Geographers went on a field trip to Swanage in Dorset from 7th - 9th September to visit Old Harry stack and Studland bay for data collection for their NEA. They also went to Weymouth for their human enquiry.

Football Highlights Year 8 Football (Pictured left - Year 8 Football team) The Year 8 football team have got off to a good start this term, winning their first game convincingly against ARK All Saints.

We hope to make another big impact in the London Cup competitions this academic year!

Year 9 Football (Pictured left - Year 9 Football team) This term our Year 9 football team have drawn 3-3 to George Green’s School in the Inner London Cup and they have beaten Ark Globe Academy 4-1 in the South London Cup. We are confident this team will produce great results this academic year!

On Saturday 8th December 14 Year 7 students will be visiting Leicester for the Premier League game between Leicester City v Tottenham Hotspur.

Many stars from the World Cup such as Harry Kane, Harry Maguire, Jamie Vardy and Hugo Lloris will be showing their skills in front of our students.

Netball Highlights EGA's Under 14s Netball Team (Pictured to the right) The U14 girls netball team showed great character in narrow 10-8 loss against Charter School recently.

Let’s hope they continue to show the same teamwork in the next game to come away with the win!

A CELEBRATION OF STAFF AND STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS THIS TERM

Well done to our Year 11 Students Lynner, Bruno and Charles for their innovative work!

Our boys have created an augmented reality comic book called 'Big T Adventures' which, along with the app (which they have also made), you can scan pages of the comic book bringing the characters to life in your actual environment as you interact with them using your phone to play the augmented reality video games. Each of the games is linked directly to what is happening on the page you have scanned.

The comic was used last summer term in English classes to engage Year 10 and Year 8 students with English literacy. Students were able to read the comic and come up with their own alternative endings.

Congratulations to Pedro Jesus, Year 10 on his Jack Petchey Sports Leadership award!

(Pictured left - Pedro Jesus, Year 10 and ) Out of 1,700 young leaders from across London, Pedro (who finished runner up) was one of the 10 short listed young leaders to receive this award.

Very impressive piece completed in an evening!

A study of Friday Kahlo for our project looking at identity and inspired by the Frida Kahlo exhibition.

Amazing artwork displaying Sherlock Holmes by Oliwier Slomski, Year 8 As part of his English reading homework, Oliwier spent four days creating his masterpiece depicting his imagery of Sherlock Holmes.

In his own words, Oliwier shares his creative process: "Through reading books, watching clips and listening to Mr Amoah teaching us about Sherlock Holmes, I became intrigued by the charecter of Sherlock Holmes. I was able to remember what he looked like and all the things he did. This inspired the design of my homework.

I really enjoyed learning about Sherlock Holmes, so I was really happy when Mr Amoah set this homework."

Oliwier used cardboard, plastic, fabric, hot glue and paint to produce his creation.

The homework set was to plan, prepare and bring in resources for a Sherlock Holmes creative Mr Amoah (Teacher of English and Media challenge. studies) said "I was absolutely thrilled to see Following successful completion of their assessment, the students were tasked with demonstrating their knowledge and understanding of Sherlock Holmes through creative means.

Congratulations to our Year 13 students who won first place in one of their open entry Battle of Britain Regatta Boat Races.

This term our Year 13 competed in the ‘open entry’ Battle of Britain regatta – they raced two races against 12 other boats, and won one.

Ms Morgan inspired staff and students this term when she graduated from University. Her achievement demonstrated our core values:

In her own words, Ms Morgan (who is one of our learning support assistants from our SEN team) shares her story: "I went to university when I was 19, but I did not finish the course, I did however tell myself that I was going to go back. I was determined.

As I began working here at EGA, I became pregnant with my daughter and while on maternity leave I said to myself that I will find a course in education, get the grades I need for university and complete my degree.

I chose to read Education studies, because whilst at EGA I really saw the difference one could make in young people's lives.

I wanted to pursue my career within the education environment. It was a hard, long and difficult 3 years juggling work, studying and being a first time mum, but it was something that I was determined to achieve.

My inspiration for going to university was my Daughter and my Grandmother. My grandmother was very upset with me when I didn’t finish university the first time, so I told her that I would go back and make her proud, which I did.

My advice to anyone wishing to go to university, would be just go for it, it is a long and difficult journey but the benefits and the jubilation that you get when you complete the course you have chosen is magical."

EGA IS NOW A FLAGSHIP SCHOOL The Inclusion Quality Mark – Flagship School.

The Inclusion Quality Mark Award provides UK schools with a nationally recognised validation of their inclusive practice and ongoing commitment to developing educational inclusion.

There are three award levels, beginning with the IQM Inclusive School Award. Two higher award levels are available to schools that continue to grow and develop their practice in conjunction with other like-minded schools – IQM Centre of Excellence Award and IQM Flagship School Award.

EGA is now a flagship school meaning we offer the highest level of incusive practise and will be working with other schools to support them to improve.
