Every term, we produce our very own school magazine: 'The Endeavour', which aims to highlight all our key events from this term.

We celebrate all our successes as an academy and highlight staff and student awards.

'The Endeavour' is a brilliant way to share all the good things that happen in our Academy with the local community and beyond.

Principal's Message

We are so proud of how our students have settled back into school life after such a long period of disruption to their education. We have had two visits from ARK Leaders recently, as part of our on-going evaluation and aim to continuously improve the quality of education for our students. They were very impressed and commented on how strong our ethos was and how engaged all our students were with their learning. This view is not simply held by observers; many parents have also been extremely positive about the work we have been doing, one parent describing our school as a ‘well oiled machine’. Our excellent practice has also been written about in the most recent edition of the Parliamentary Review which shares the work and achievements of great schools across the country. Details of this can be found within the pages of this magazine.

This edition of the Endeavour covers so many fabulous opportunities and there has been a cooking theme. Whether it be our master chef competition or Levi Roots virtually cooking with 80 of our families, with all ingredients provided by a very generous local Tesco’s store. Both were fabulous and really brought staff, students, parents and our community together.

We welcomed back all our students from lockdown with induction, balloons and copious amounts of cup cakes (we really do like food!). Parents were so supportive of all the testing and COVID measures in place.

Now I look forward to the Summer Term and the opportunities both in and out of the classrooms. Year 11 will complete their Centre Assessed Grades and all other students will complete their end of year assessments at the end of the Summer Term.

I look forward to celebrating their progress and the outcome of all their hard work.

This is an extraordinary honour and a real testament to the incredible progress we have made as a school. I am so grateful to parents, staff and students for all that they have contributed.

GOOD MORNING BRITAIN

Our academy appeared on Good Morning Britain on Friday 5th March, where we spoke about our excellent preparations for re-opening along with our testing plans.

We can all be glad of the extra layer of safety and security that testing provides our community.

A special thank you to all our staff who played an integral part in the operation of setting up and training staff to ensure our testing centre was ready for the return of students.

WELCOME BACK STUDENTS CUPCAKES We missed our students over the lockdown and were so pleased to be able to reopen our gates to welcome them back.

STAYING SAFE We anticipated how nervous our students may be, especially knowing they were having to undertake COVID testing.

SUPER PROUD! We are super proud of our students who showed courage and strength.

What better way to welcome them, than with cupcakes and balloons!

EGA MASTER CHEF

THIS IS MY DISH Message from student about his dish This is my meal for the junior Masterchef. I made ramen noodles with pork. I also made mac n cheese with fried chicken.

For the pork in the ramen dish, I pressure cooked it for 10 mins and then air crisped it for 7 minutes and then let it rest. I seasoned the pork with Chinese 5 spice, salt, pepper, and fresh garlic. With the ramen, I used the remaining of the water from the pressure-cooked pork and added ramen seasoning to make a broth.

I then served with coriander, spring onions, red chillies and chili flakes.

For the fried chicken I seasoned it with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, white pepper. I whisked an egg and coated the chicken in it. I seasoned some plain flour with all-purpose seasoning and salt and pepper. I coated the chicken in the flour. I then deep fried the boneless chicken thighs for 8 minutes.

For the mac n cheese, I boiled water and then added my pasta to it. Once the pasta cooked, I added a cheese sauce, soft cream cheese and cheddar. I added salt, pepper, ground nutmeg, milk and ground cinnamon. I then put it in a tray and added cheese and panko breadcrumbs. I put in in the oven and waited for the cheese to brown and then took it out. I then served it with a side salad.

REMOTE LEARNING

REMOTE LEARNING & CHROME BOOKS FOR ALL STUDENTS The Remote Learning Policy and Plans were intended to provide clarity to stakeholders on the different ways in which our school would: Ensure consistency in the approach to remote learning for pupils who aren’t in school Set out expectations for all members of the school community with regards to remote learning Provide clarity around safeguarding and data protection in a remote learning context As a school we were and continue to be committed to providing continuity of education to our pupils and will always aim to provide all of our pupils with equal opportunities to participate in learning from home.

EGA Chromebook Programme The COVID-19 pandemic has shown the whole country and our Academy how important it is for children to access their learning.

While we cannot ever replace the classroom, we can help to close gaps in learning that have opened since schools were closed by enabling our pupils to manage some of their own learning at home.

The best way to achieve this is to have a suitable device and a broadband internet connection at home.

A Chromebook on Loan As an EGA student your child is entitled to a brand new Chromebook on loan for the rest of their time at the Academy. This device would be kept at home to support their learning and to enable them to access their lessons from home if we have to send children home as a result of COVID -19. Your child can use the Chromebook to help them complete their homework, access any catch-up resources that teachers share with them, and provide a gateway to the World Wide Web - enabling your child to independently develop their learning further. There is no charge to borrow this device. However, you will have to pay if the Chromebook is stolen, lost or damaged.

You will be required to sign a contract to this effect, which we will talk through with you.

Through the dedication of our staff we delivered over 5000 live lessons. We able to distribute over 300 brand new Chromebooks to our students

COOK-ALONG WITH LEVI ROOTS We were very lucky to welcome Levi Roots to our academy to take part in a live online ‘Cook-along’ with 80 of our families. All the food was kindly donated by our local Tesco’s Store.

We also value the organisation and involvement of the Metropolitan Police, particularly our School's Officer, PC Nigel, in helping to organise and coordinate this excellent event. This was a very special occasion and we are extremely proud that our academy hosted the event.

As Levi said, Evelyn Grace Academy is ‘his favourite Lambeth school’.

KINDNESS WEEK 18TH - 22ND JANUARY

Kindness week was a wonderful opportunity for staff to express their gratitude to one another during the lockdown period. It was great to see staff enjoy it and spread a bit of kindness.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Our Inclusion Team teamed up with Brixton Soup Kitchen to serve hot meals and food parcels to families in need. Staff donate food, clothes and carrier bags to support.

We will continue to working with BSK to support the needs of our community.

BE HER LEAD MOOD BOARDS Be Her Lead girls focused on acknowledging the difficulties lockdown presented and responded by focusing on themselves in isolation (away from peer pressures etc) and looking at themselves authentically. These are a few of the mood boards they created.

BE YOURSELF Leading into international Women’s Day week, EGA’s Be Her Lead YR8 group had been invited to attend a fantastic event to celebrate World Book Day.

This is a great opportunity for them to hear an inspirational female author speak and share her insights on her journey to becoming a ‘best-selling author and telling stories that celebrate black women [and] women of colour’. This was an inspiring opportunity to see a female role model sharing her journey.

SCHOOL'S CHALLENGE Celebrating the success of our students

Congratulations to all our Year 9 students who took part in the School Challenge programme this year.

The students began the challenge last November and ended this Wednesday 24 March. Despite the lockdown and under very difficult circumstances our students never gave up and worked very hard throughout the programme.

The projects presented by our Year 9 students were innovative, unique and eco-friendly, showing their fantastic skills of cooperation, creativity, communication and critical thinking. We are proud of their work and participation in this event.

Students have been awarded with a certificate and a trophy for their excellent participation and contribution to the Schools Challenge programme. Also, Team 15 has been awarded with the Presentation Skills and Leadership Prize, Team 16 have been awarded with the Golden Prize. This is a great achievement for our School and we are all proud of our Year 9 students.

Our winners are: Shawni, Alex, K-Cee, Kelisiann and Gabriela from Team 15 and Niara, Kaizer, Yahya, Harlon and Amaryah from Team 16.

FOND FAREWELLS Join us in wishing our departing staff a fond fair and well wishes in their new beginnings

Mr McEwen is leaving us this term. He has done an incredible job whilst working at the academy and he will be greatly missed. His legacy and impact will remain long after his departure. I am very happy to say that our very own Miss Crispino will now teach Business to both Year 10 and 11 students. She is not only fluent in Spanish and a capable linguist, but she has a degree in Business and is very excited about taking on this responsibility. Mr McEwen’s responsibilities for assessment, reporting and student outcomes will now be led by Mr Rowley, my Vice Principal.

Finally, Mr Hadden has left London to go and live with his family in Somerset. He has done a fantastic job of developing the geography curriculum and Miss McManamon will now take over the reins and ably lead the department.

Here at Ark Evelyn Grace Academy we are proud of our facilities, which include: A four-court sports hall A dance studio Two multi-use games area An all-weather astro-turf A 100-metre running track A drama studio A gym Classrooms Main Hall Table Tennis Meeting rooms Each of these areas provide a safe environment in which to work. Our facilities are available to the community, for filming, photography and events outside of normal school hours.
