Robert C. Jackson, Still Life Rebel Continuing in the Old Gallery through November 3, the solo exhibition Still Life Rebel features 27 paintings by Pennsylvania artist Robert C. Jackson, the Museum’s 2019 Martha & Merritt deJong Artist-in-Residence.

Community Church in Spencerville, Maryland. In 1997, Jackson decided to make another career change and became a full-time artist operating his own gallery in downtown Kennett Square, Pennsylvania.

Jackson is an artist with a non-traditional background. He graduated from the University of Delaware with a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1986 and began working as a radio systems engineer with Motorola.

Robert Jackson’s paintings are designed as conceptual and narrative based still life to spark the imaginations of viewers. He constructs dioramas where the props depicted in his works serve as characters who act out dramas on soda pop stages.

After five years, with a strong calling to pursue the ministry, he became an assistant pastor for the Cedar Ridge

Although a still life painter, Jackson’s work is anything but still. By presenting

taboo topics in a humorous manner, he notes, “I aim to affirm reality, yet offer hope and a laugh. My characters show us our foibles and sometimes make big issues easier to swallow.

Hopefully we are able to laugh the hardest at ourselves.”

Jackson is represented in the permanent collections of museums across the country including the Brandywine River Museum of Art, the Delaware Art Museum, the New Britain Museum of American Art, the South Dakota Art Museum and the Evansville Museum of Arts, History, & Science.

Museum Joins Indiana University In Celebrating Milestone Achievements As part of Indiana University’s bicentennial celebration during 2019-2020, the Museum is hosting Now and Next: Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture + Design Faculty Exhibition from November 17, 2019 – January 5, 2020 in the Old Gallery. Thirty-six members of the faculty of the Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture + Design will exhibit a broad range of media, with both handmade objects and new technologies on display. Exhibited works will include video and film, paintings, drawings, sculpture, architectural models, textiles, prints, photographs, collages, ceramics and installations in a variety of media.

The Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture + Design is celebrating 125 years at Indiana University. Founded in 1895, the Department of Freehand and Technical Drawing at Indiana University was one of the oldest departments at IU. Through the years, the department was named the Henry Radford Hope School of Fine Arts, which was comprised of studio art and art history. The School of Art, Architecture + Design merged the departments of Studio Art with Apparel Merchandising and Interior Design. Currently the Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture + Design houses 14 different areas.

The exhibition was organized by Betsy Stirratt, Founding Director of the Grunwald Gallery of Art at Indiana University. A native of New Orleans, Stirratt has lived in Bloomington for the last 30 years and has exhibited her paintings, books, objects and installations widely since 1983.

Guest Curator Linda Steinworth Organizes Jewelry Invitational “Jewelry is about intimacy and connection. It has a history of marking special moments in time and it is one of the rare art forms that we carry out in the world with us. We use it to tell the outside world something about ourselves.”

— Deb Karash, Exhibiting Artist Ornament as Art: Contemporary American Jewelry Invitational will be featured in the Main Gallery from October 13–November 24, 2019. Organized by artist and guest curator, Linda Steinworth, the featured artists were selected based on their artistry, creativity, and technical expertise.

Art jewelry emphasizes creative expression and design and is characterized by the use of a variety of materials. The work in the exhibition ranges from intricate and detailed 18 and 24-karat gold necklaces and pins accented with precious and semi-precious stones, to sculptural pins, necklaces, and earrings in copper, textured and colored with colored pencils.

The exhibition is an opportunity to have contemporary jewelry seen and represented in the context of art, which extends beyond its traditional role as adornment. Participating artists include Aaron Macsai and Frances Kite, Morton Grove, Illinois; Danny Saathoff, Robbinsdale, Minnesota; Deb Karash, Asheville, North Carolina; Linda Steinworth, Stillwater, Minnesota; and Lisa D’ Agostino, Vallejo, California.

46th Mid-States Craft Exhibition The 46th Mid-States Craft Exhibition will be featured in the Main Gallery from December 8, 2019 – March 8, 2020. Open to artists residing in the six states of Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, and Missouri, the competition will feature ceramics, glass, textiles, metalwork, wood, and mixed media.

Juror for this year’s competition is Dr. Chrystine Keener, assistant professor of Renaissance and Baroque Art and Culture at Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida. Dr. Keener earned her Ph.D. in the History of Visual Culture from Indiana University, where she specialized in Early Modern art and culture. Her research focuses on the Italian Reformation, which predates the Protestant Reformation by 30 years, and its impact on the visual arts. She has presented her

research at the Centre for Reformation and Renaissance Studies in Toronto, the Herzog August Bibliothek, Wolfenbüttel, Germany, the College Art Association Conference, and the Renaissance Society of America Conference.

Nearly $10,000 in purchase and merit awards, underwritten by Evansville individuals, corporations, foundations, and philanthropic organizations, will be presented at the December 7 awards evening.

Begley Art Gallery Featured Artists

Jewelry from Around the World Visit the John Streetman Alcove for the special exhibition: Jewelry from Around the World from September 8 through November 24, 2019. On loan from private collectors are unique pieces of jewelry from countries including American Samoa, Greece, Iceland, Kenya, Russia, Czech Republic and South Africa.

Barbara Rodenberg Barbara Rodenberg is a mixed media artist and writer whose collages are made of scraps of metal, old machine parts, road maps, old books and handmade paper. Although she taught her students how to make paper during her almost 20 years of teaching, it wasn’t until she retired in 2009 that Barbara began to concentrate on making handmade papers and incorporating them into her collages.

Her work was accepted in the Ohio Valley Art League’s bi-annual Recycle Art Show in 2009. She and her

husband, ceramic artist David Rodenberg, have exhibited their work together in exhibitions at the Ohio Valley Art League, the Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana, and the Melvin Peterson Gallery at the University of Evansville.

Barbara Rodenberg will attend the Museum member reception on Thursday, October 17, from 6:008:00 PM. Her exhibition continues through December 5.

Ernest Vincent Wood III Ernest Vincent Wood attended Wichita State University as a general studio art major until an instructor, who recognized his affinity for capturing light, encouraged oil painting. Wood finished his Bachelor of Fine Art degree in painting in 2006.

The following summer, with assistance from the Kansas Cultural Trust, he attended the International School for Drawing, Painting and Sculpture in Umbria, Italy. It was in Italy that Wood befriended Irish painter Ted Jones with whom he has developed a strong friendship and working relationship resulting in exhibitions of Wood’s work in Ireland in 2007, 2008 and 2009.

and has most recently exhibited in Denver, Colorado and Park City, Utah.

Wood will attend the Museum member reception on Saturday, December 7, from 6:00–8:00 PM. His exhibition continues through February 7, 2020.

John Streetman Alcove Highlights Past Mid-States Craft Award Winners In conjunction with the 46th Mid-States Craft Exhibition in the Main Gallery, Virginia G. Schroeder Curator of Art Tory Schendel Cox has selected key pieces from the Museum’s permanent collection to feature in the John Streetman Alcove from December 1–29.

Each of these works of art was acquired for the Museum’s collection as an award winner from Mid-States Craft competitions over the past four decades. Funding by Evansville individuals, corporations, foundations and philanthropic organizations has allowed the Museum to purchase the best examples of contemporary ceramics, glass, textiles, metalwork, wood and mixed media by contemporary Midwestern artists.

HISTORY This exacting-scale model of Fallingwater was meticulously created by and is on loan from Architectural Models of Norman, Oklahoma. It offers a unique vantage point of the residence that cannot be seen by an on-site visit. The house’s position within the waterfall is clear. This model was created in partnership with Fallingwater and the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy.

William Wesley Peters: Evansville’s Connection to the World of Frank Lloyd Wright Through October 27, this exhibition recalling the career of William Wesley Peters, who became the “right-hand-man” of Frank Lloyd Wright, continues in the Evansville Convention and Visitors Bureau Center for History & Science. Peters lived in Evansville during his youth and during a portion of his professional life and after Wright’s death continued on in a career in which he established a world-wide reputation in architecture and design.

During Peters’ career with Frank Lloyd Wright, he worked on some of his most iconic designs. This included the house Fallingwater in Mill Run, Pennsylvania.

The construction of Fallingwater, a commissioned work for Edgar J. Kaufmann, Sr. in 1936, is seen as one of the most significant feats of Frank Lloyd Wright’s career. The Kaufmann family asked Wright to design a weekend home with a view of the beautiful waterfall. In response, Wright designed a home that encompassed the waterfall through an innovative feat of engineering and design. During an interview later in life, William Wesley Peters remarked that his timing returning to Taliesin was fortunate because he was able to work on structural design for

some of Fallingwater. The guest house above the main building was entirely engineered by Peters, and he said he “felt very happy with [himself] for having worked it out.”

In July of 2019, Fallingwater, along with seven other Frank Lloyd Wright buildings, were collectively named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Peters-Margedant House was Wes Peters’ first commission during his time in Evansville in mid 1930s. His father owned a plot of land at 1506 East Indiana Street and his mother suggested Peters build a workman’s cottage on this property. The lot was small and narrow requiring innovative design

solutions. Some of the features that the Peters-Margedant House share with Frank Lloyd Wright’s Usonian style include a flat roof with wide eaves, clerestory windows, no basement, a horizontal board and batten construction, a dramatic central fireplace, and the incorporation of a water element.

Never used as a workman’s cottage, the 552 square foot house was occupied by Peters’ cousin James Margedant and his family of six. The house is experimental and decidedly unique, and after a 2016-2017 relocation and renovation, may now be visited on the University of Evansville’s campus.

Third Annual History Celebration set for Evansville Museum On Saturday, November 16, 2019, from 12:00-4:00 PM, the Museum will host its third annual History Celebration. The event will feature informational booths of local organizations from Vanderburgh and adjoining counties that present history to the public—museums, libraries and historical societies.

At 2:00 PM, featured speaker Dr. Stella Ress will present Local Matters: Local History and Reshaping the National Narrative.

Museum to Mark 80th Anniversary of the Wizard of Oz In the 80th anniversary year of The Wizard of Oz, the Evansville Museum will present a special screening of this film. This classic movie, starring Judy Garland, will be shown in the Koch Immersive Theater & Planetarium on Thursday, November 14 at 6:00 PM. Retired EVSC film studies teacher Terry Hughes will provide commentary

about the film. Tickets for the show are $10 per person and attendees may enjoy complimentary popcorn and soft drinks before the movie from 5:15-5:45 PM.

Stella Ress is an assistant professor in the department of history at the University of Southern Indiana where she teaches courses on United States and Public History.

She has published in the areas of Public History, Cultural History, the History of Girls, and Urban History.

She is also actively involved in researching, preserving, and promoting local history. Her latest local history project, the exhibit, “Stonewall and its Connection to Evansville’s Queer Past” displayed in the windows of Evansville’s Alahambra Theater.

Celebrate Science Day with Sciencepalooza The Museum’s annual science day will take place on Saturday, October 5 from 11:00 AM-4:00 PM as volunteers from the Evansville Astronomical Society, the University of Southern Indiana and University of Evansville will be on hand for Sciencepalooza, a day for children and adults to observe, learn, discover and explore the wonders of science and experimentation. Activities include science demonstrations, storytelling with Master Storyteller Susan Fowler, experiment stations, observing through telescopes and the premiere of a new full-dome movie in the Koch Immersive Theater & Planetarium.

New Theater Show to Premiere on Science Day Our newest full-dome movie offering, Mayan Archaeoastronomy: Observers of the Universe, takes the viewer on a poetic journey through space which feels more like being inside a beautiful, stylistic painting than a planetarium show. Offering a feast of colors and sounds, this stunning film presents a tour of six different Mayan archaeological sites located in Central America. The film relates the connection of ancient Mayan temples and Mayan mythology, the orientation of temple structures to the movements of the Sun, Moon and the planet Venus.

This artistic interpretation of the Universe is sure to create a visit that will not be forgotten. This movie presentation includes a look at the autumn sky presented by a member of the Museum science staff.

Daily 4:00 PM show-times for Mayan Archaeoastronomy: Observers of the Universe will begin on Saturday, October 5. A ticket for any theater show is included for all non-members with general Museum admission. À la catre admission is $5 for Museum Members, $7 for Not-Yet Members.

HOW SCIENCE KNOWS Science Exhibition Seeks to Explain How Science Works There are a number of discoveries in science that have been well-understood for decades, and in some instances, centuries. Many of these scientific theories and ideas about how the world works have been around so long that few question their authenticity, despite having no knowledge of how these explanations initially came to be understood. Tapping into a universal yearning to understand our world and the Universe, the November 10, 2019-January 19, 2020 exhibition Eureka! How Science Knows seeks to engage guests in a deeper understanding about how science works.

Created in conjunction with experts in their respective fields, the exhibition presents the “how” in science that led us to understand many well-known phenomena, answering questions such as how do we know that inheritance involves chromosomes? How do we know that DNA is the stuff of heredity?

How do we know that the Big Bang actually happened? The exhibition explains the Scientific Method, the universal process whereby questions arising from systematic observation lead to hypotheses which, through experimentation, confirm or refute ideas about how or why something works.

The exhibition highlights the work of select scientists and shows that although work is often done by individuals working in isolation, science depends on continuous interactions within the scientific community and the consensus arising from these interactions is how scientific knowledge advances.

The Museum celebrates the season of light with its traditional holiday offering of music under the dome of the Koch Immersive Theater & Planetarium. Let it Snow is a fulldome extravaganza featuring a variety of festive classics from Frank Sinatra, Chuck Berry, Burl Ives, Brenda Lee and others. The program ends with stunning multi-media finale by the Trans Siberian Orchestra.

Let it Snow show-times are at 1:00 PM from December 4 through December 30. A ticket for any theater show is included for all non-members with general Museum admission. À la catre admission is $5 for Museum Members, $7 for Not-Yet Members.

Let it Snow A Holiday Music Journey

Unusual Celestial Event to be Observed from Reitz Hill During the morning hours of Monday, November 11, an unusual celestial event may be observed from Evansville when the planet Mercury will be seen to cross the face of the Sun. The passage of a planet across the disk of the Sun— which is called a transit—is a fairly rare occurrence. Only transits of Mercury and Venus may be seen from the Earth.

The last transit of Mercury occurred in 2016, but in any given century only about a dozen transits of Mercury occur.

This event may only be viewed using special telescopes that block the intense glare of the Sun. As is the case of a partial solar eclipse, persons may not casually view the Sun without proper protection. When viewed through a telescope equipped with a solar filter, the planet Mercury appears as a tiny, black disk slowly crossing the face of the Sun over a period of 5 hours.

The Evansville Museum and the Evansville Astronomical Society will co-host a viewing event on the date of the transit at the 200 block of Dreier Avenue on Reitz Hill from 6:30 AM to Noon. Telescopes allowing for the safe viewing of the event will be available at this location for those who wish to experience the transit. The event will be canceled in the event of heavy cloud cover or inclement weather.

Everyone is invited to the Neighborhood Halloween Bash at the Evansville Museum. This familyfriendly event on Saturday, October 26 from 11:00 AM3:00 PM will feature a costume contest, trick-or-treating throughout the Museum, and hands-on activities! Throughout the day, you will experience Halloween crafts, celebrate Dia de los Muertos, enjoy harvest activities, participate in science demonstrations and meet special guests!

At the workshop’s conclusion, participants will take home a sturdy, high performing 60mm telescope suitable for astronomical viewing. These homemade telescopes should outperform most commercially available instruments of the same size. Materials for this class are provided with funds from a Museum endowment donated by Charles Vincent Statham.

By Kaman Hillenburg, Collection Manager Rocket Edition Poster Dress As part of the Museum’s year-long celebration of the 1960s, I want to share one of my favorite artifacts in the Museum’s permanent collection.

In that turbulent decade, young people often rejected the status quo and were eager to embrace change.

That eagerness for change was reflected in the fashion of the time.

for this poster dress encouraged repurposing the garment into a poster instructing the owner to “cut open all the seams and hang it on your wall as a poster… or cover pillows… or wrap packages… or, as your collection grows, sew them together and make a bedspread or curtains or a tablecloth.” Although its popularity was short-lived, this novelty dress documented the fashion and sentiments of the time.

Purchased by the donor in 1968 from deJong’s apparel store located on Evansville’s Main Street, this dress embodies the clean and sleek fashion of the 1960s. Made to be disposable, this non-woven yet durable poster dress is made of paper, rayon, and nylon with a Velcro closure at the left shoulder seam. This garment features a screen-printed illustration of a rocket launch and is among a series of five Pop Art poster dresses designed by Philadelphia graphic artist Harry Gordon (1930-2007). It was manufactured by Poster Dresses Ltd. in London, England and was widely sold in the United States.
