WELCOME TO THE EVANSVILLE MUSEUM Springtime at the Evansville Museum is announced by the daffodils blooming and the school buses arriving. Over the next nine weeks, 2,500 students from pre-kindergarten through college will explore the Museum’s art, history and science galleries and experience the Koch Immersive Theater & Planetarium. As the leading informal, experiential education partner to our local and regional school corporations and universities, the Museum utilizes its extensive permanent art, history and science collections and temporary exhibitions to align our public programs and Docent-led tours with the academic standards of Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky, turning STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) into STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math). We are grateful for our volunteer educators, the 40+ members of the Docent Association, for their dedication to fulfilling the Museum’s educational mission. In addition to providing tours for nearly 7,000 children and adults annually, the Docents assist with Spring Break Camp, Summer Camp and the Museum’s monthly family-friendly programs on Super Saturdays.

Major Retrospective Exhibition Highlights Rube Goldberg’s Artwork and Inventions The Art & Inventions of Rube Goldberg, an exhibition celebrating the groundbreaking artwork of one of the most influential cartoon illustrators of the 20th century, opens in the Main Gallery, April 28 and continues through July 21. Marking the first comprehensive retrospective exhibition of Goldberg’s work since 1970, The Art & Inventions of Rube Goldberg chronicles all aspects of the artist’s 72 year career, from his earliest published drawings and iconic inventions to his Pulitzer Prize-winning political cartoons and beyond. Bringing together never-before-exhibited original works of art, preparatory drawings, video, and related ephemera, this exhibition offers visitors an unprecedented opportunity to witness the development of Goldberg’s artwork and trace his rise to prominence. The exhibition begins with a look at Goldberg’s innovative early work, with original drawings that reveal the beginnings of his comic style; then follows his steady rise to fame as a nationally syndicated presence in the 1920s and 1930s. The influence of vaudeville and early film on Goldberg’s comic imagination is explored, and his satirical takes on fashion, sports, politics, gender roles,

3

and other aspects of modern life are showcased and celebrated. Rare family photographs and early films provide period detail and essential context. The Art & Inventions of Rube Goldberg prominently features Goldberg’s crowning artistic achievement: his invention drawings. Highlighting their unique burlesque of our modern age of invention, this section explores how Goldberg’s zany contraptions caught the popular imagination and became—as he put it—“a symbol of man’s capacity for exerting maximum effort to achieve minimal results,” while making him a cultural icon. The exhibition concludes with a vivid survey of Goldberg’s output during his final decades and with a celebration of his lasting influence on popular culture. The Art & Inventions of Rube Goldberg offers visitors an intimate look into the life and legacy of one of the keenest and wittiest observers of modern times, whose name has entered the cultural lexicon and whose influence continues to reverberate into the 21st century. The Art & Inventions of Rube Goldberg was conceived by Creighton Michael; developed in cooperation with Heirs of Rube Goldberg, LLC; and curated by Max Weintraub. The national

touring exhibition was organized by International Arts & Artists, Washington, DC, and includes the following venues: Museum of Pop Culture, Seattle; Grand Rapids Art Museum; Contemporary Jewish Museum, San Francisco; Portland Public Library, Portland, Maine; National Museum of American Jewish History, Philadelphia; and the Queens Museum, New York. International Arts & Artists In Washington, DC, is a non-profit arts service organization dedicated to increasing cross-cultural understanding and exposure to the arts internationally, through exhibitions, programs, and services to artists, arts institutions and the public. HISTORY This image depicts the Pennsylvania Avenue Expressway in 1961. Today a section of the Lloyd Expressway, it was a major thoroughfare in Evansville during the 1960s. Originally opened in the 1950s, it connected Rosenberger Avenue to Fulton Avenue with a four-lane road. East of Fulton Avenue, the Pennsylvania Expressway became two-lane Division Street. In this image note the price of gas at the Zephyr station, 21.9 cents per gallon, and Sterling Brewery at right in the background with the smokestacks. Sterling was located at the corner of the Pennsylvania Expressway and Fulton Avenue. Image Collection of Willard Library, RC 79.

One Small Step. . .

Outdoor Show to Light up the NIght

Join us on Thursday, June 6, at 9:00 PM for an outdoor preview of the 2019 laser light shows. A 20 minute outdoor light show will be projected on the southwest wall of the Museum. The teaser program will combine lasers and fog effects accompanied with the music from bands from the 1980s to create a unique outdoor event .

The challenge of spaceflight in the 1960s drew upon the best and the brightest of a generation, while at the same time served as the backdrop of the longest, most public struggle of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. With unshakable momentum, the race to take the first steps on the Moon served as a unifying counterpoint to the turbulent 1960s in the United States. With NASA’s successful Apollo 11 mission on July 20, 1969, two astronauts successfully landed on the lunar surface and returned to Earth.

mission “Where men from the planet Earth first set foot on the Moon”. A Lunar Theater will offer guests the opportunity to learn more about the manned Moon missions 50 years ago. Interpretive text, graphics, and popular culture artifacts from the period will be displayed.

In the five decades since the manned missions, our Moon has not been forgotten. The exhibition will display large-scale, high-resolution photographs of the lunar surface taken between 2009 and 2015 by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. These images provide unique visual data to help answer our questions about the Moon’s formation, its continuing geological evolution, and its relationship to Earth.

Accompanying the exhibition will be daily presentations in the Koch Immersive Theater & Planetarium of a special show explaining further the supreme feat of landing astronauts on the Moon. An interactive planetarium show utilizing the capabilities of the Museum’s digital planetarium to detail our satellite’s unique relationship with Earth will highlight a few of the manned and unmanned missions which proceeded the Moon landings and showcase archival footage of the Apollo missions. Admission to the planetarium show will be complimentary with every paid admission to the Museum.

The May 12-July 28 exhibition in the Evansville Convention & Visitors Bureau Center for History & Science includes black-and-white and color photographs of the historic Apollo 11

Looking forward, the exhibition considers the future of the Moon, when we might return, and the potential for a continual presence for humankind on our only natural satellite.

Those who wish to attend are asked to bring a lawn chair or blanket and assemble either on the slope of the levee or on the parking lot between the Museum and the River. Our admission-free event is open to the public and will be canceled in the event of inclement weather.

EDUCATION Guests of all ages enjoy spending time with Reggie the Museum Shark.

Sharks are Loose in the Evansville Museum! by Karen Malone, The Ruby C. Strickland Curator of Education Imagine that you are in the Museum’s galleries, enjoying the latest exhibition. Suddenly, you see something out of the corner of your eye. It’s getting closer. “Wait – is that a shark?” you ask yourself. “Why is there a shark in the Museum?” It’s too late – it’s right behind you! Watch out! Aaaahhhh! Yes, there is a shark loose in the Evansville Museum. In fact, there are two of them. Their names are Reggie and Regina, and luckily they are friendly sharks. These two adorable puppets are actually an activity designed to put a new spin on exploring the Museum. If you are a little kid, the Museum might feel big and imposing. But if you can take your new shark friend with you on a tour, then suddenly everything feels like an adventure. And go on adventures they do! The Museum Sharks are very popular, and not just with little kids. Over the last two years, Reggie and Regina have gone on hundreds of adventures. “We reached a point that Reggie was out on so many adventures that he couldn’t keep up with the demand, so we had to acquire a second shark,”

9

says Museum receptionist Tarrah Kopka. Officially, that second shark is Reggie’s twin sister, Regina. But why sharks? We had purchased several puppets for use in education programs and for social media posts including a dinosaur and an otter. But when we added the show Sea Monsters in the Koch Immersive Theater, we got Reggie and people loved him. People were asking all the time for more shark photos, and the puppet took on a life of its own. “We realized we shouldn’t be the only ones taking the photos and thought this could be a fun opportunity for guests to interact with the Museum in a different way,” elaborates Kopka. Guests are encouraged to share their shark adventures on social media by using the hashtags #MuseumShark and #EvansvilleMuseum. The Museum Sharks have expanded their territory beyond the Museum’s galleries and have recently infiltrated school field trips. A new field trip program called Shark Detective is designed around academic standards for 5th and 6th grade for both Indi-

ana and Kentucky students. Students practice their scientific reasoning and evidence-based argument skills while solving a mystery. We dressed the sharks in costumes and wigs to create the different characters involved in the mystery. It’s hilarious, hands-on and definitely unique. This new tour was in development in 2018; a “dress rehearsal” resulted in a group of impressed teachers and engaged students. Shark Detective is now available to organizations of all types, including schools, homeschool groups, scout troops and adults. Interested parties should e-mail education@emuseum.org. Overall, the Museum Sharks are just one reason why a visit to the Evansville Museum is an experience unlike any other. Are there any downsides? I find I get bitten a lot. This job is much more dangerous than I would have anticipated.

Campers gather in groups to work on fun projects during the Museum’s summer camps.

Educational Programs Board Game Night Need a break from this screen– focused world? If so, then bring your friends and family to the Museum for Board Game Night! Join us 5:00– 7:30 PM on the second Thursday of every month for a free evening of classic and new tabletop games. Light snacks are provided for those attending.

2019 Summer Camps Join the Evansville Museum for a unique educational experience for campers aged 6 to 10 years old. Our inquiry-based camps allow your child to explore topics in an encouraging learning environment. Take a break from the summer slump for an intensive day of incredibly fun activities. Because we use inquiry-style learning, campers of a wide variety of abilities will have fun. Campers are welcome and encouraged to return each year and “repeat” camp topics – every year will result in a different experience. Each Evansville Museum camp combines art, history & science activities around that camp’s theme and includes seeing a show in the Koch Immersive Theater and Planetarium. These all day camps are from 9:00 AM-4:00 PM and includes a healthy afternoon snack. All campers must pack a self-contained (not refrigerated) lunch. Camp Pricing $40 (Museum Members) and $55 (Not-yet Members) per child. Extended childcare is available (7:30 AM-5:00 PM), additional $10 per day per child. Aftercare requests must be made at least two days before the camp day. May 29 – Space Camp: Moon Mission Prepare to blast off to the Moon! In honor of the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, this year’s space camp will be all about our lunar neighbor. We will practice astronaut skills, eat

space food (including astronaut ice cream and, of course, cheese) and we will construct our own lunar rovers out of giant cardboard boxes. June 5 – Invention Camp Campers will be inspired by the Museum’s current exhibition The Art & Inventions of Rube Goldberg to create their own inventions! We will construct roller coasters, play with Dominoes, craft with Legos, and so much more. This camp is all about building and inventing! June 12 – Psychedelic 60s Camp Far out, man! Come learn all about the (kid-friendly) 1960’s. We will make tie-dye, create our own kaleidoscopes, watch a Laser Light Show in the Koch Immersive Theater and Planetarium, find inspiration from artists such as Andy Warhol and Jackson Pollack to make our own art. June 19 – Mission Possible Camp Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to spend a day at the Evansville Museum honing your skills as a master spy. We will crack codes, write with invisible ink, navigate a laser field, compare fingerprints, extract DNA from a strawberry and practice other things essential to espionage.

Creative Crowd Join us the second Saturday of every month from 11:30 AM-3:00 PM and the third Thursday of every month 5:00-8:00 PM for Creative Crowd. Participants will create personally meaningful pages in an art journal as they explore creative techniques designed to increase their knowledge of artist tools, paints and various other supplies. Participants will need to bring a journal of their choice. All other supplies will be provided. Super Saturday The fourth Saturday of every month is designated a Super Saturday at the Evansville Museum of Arts, History & Science. From 11:00 AM– 3:00 PM the day is filled with crafts, activities, challenges and/or guest lectures, all on a different theme each month. Children, teens, adults and families are encouraged to have a fun day exploring new topics. All Super Saturday activities are included with Museum admission.

June 26 – Disaster Camp This camp is going to be a total disaster – but in a good way! We will construct earthquake-proof towers, protect our buildings from floods, sink some ships, learn first aid, and hone other survival skills necessary to thrive.

June & July Featured Artist: Debby Bird

The Museum is open admissionfree each Thursday night from 5:00–8:00 PM. Join us on the First Thursday of each month for featured artist receptions or artist demonstrations. Thursday, May 2 – Ryan McKain from Columbus, Ohio will demonstrate his painting techniques.

Louisville painter Debby Bird was introduced to art as a child by her mother and grandmother. She went on to study architecture at the University of Kentucky and minored in studio art. It was after Bird lost her 38 year old sister to cancer, that she reevaluated her priorities and took time off from her career to care for her young children. During that period, she began to study classic painting techniques at the Agile Arts Atelier in Herndon, Virginia. Bird has returned to her career and maintains a busy schedule balancing work, family life and painting. In the Homeward Series, Bird draws inspiration from her family’s Homeward farm where she spent summers and vacations as a child. Her figurative, landscape and still life paintings recall childhood memories of the farm.

Debby Bird will attend an artist reception on Thursday, June 6, from 6:00-8:00 PM. Her exhibition continues through July 31.

August & September Featured Artist: Jason Sturgill Jason Sturgill’s graphic design background is evident in his colorful drawings. Using contour drawing techniques, his imagery of figures and objects are defined by lines and shapes suggesting movement. IN OTHER NEWS Starting the Challenge, Robert C. Jackson, 24x 72x, oil on linen

Save the Date: November 2 Please mark your calendars and join us for the fabulous 2019 Evansville Museum Ball. This year’s Ball will be presented in a setting of whimsical, still life paintings by Robert C. Jackson. Jackson’s still-life paintings are far from the traditional definition of a “still life.” Populated by balloon animals, toy dinosaurs, cakes, candies, cookies and ice cream, these paintings are immeasurably fun--yet don’t be fooled by the bright colors, there’s more than just fun going on in these scenes. The evening will begin with a VIP Champagne Reception followed by a delectable gourmet dinner by Just Rennie’s. Next, prepare to dance the night away to everyone’s favorite party band, the Atlanta-based Celebrity AllStars. 2019 Ball Chairs David & Samantha Bucur | Pat & Lisa Shoulders
