Presented in partnership with the EVANSVILLE MUSEUM GUILD and VIRGINIA G. SCHROEDER

Celebrate Spring In The Museum’s Galleries With Art In Bloom Inspired by the fields of flowers depicted in the plein air paintings of Ramón Vilanova on exhibit in the Old Gallery, the Museum has organized a temporary display of art to capture the imaginations and talents of regional floral designers. ART IN BLOOM, a special event to be held June 9 – 11, in the Museum’s Crescent Galleries, pairs works from the permanent collection with live floral displays created by the area’s leading designers to interpret the individual works of art. All are invited to celebrate spring in the Museum’s galleries. For details about purchasing tickets to the preview party on Thursday, June 8, and the Evansville Museum Guild’s tea on June 9, visit the Museum’s website at: evansvillemuseum.org/art-in-bloom or call (812) 425-2406. 19th Century Master Prints from Impressionism to Belle Époque on View in the Main Gallery On loan from a private collector for a May 28 – August 20 Main Gallery exhibition, FROM IMPRESSIONISM TO BELLE ÉPOQUE traces the development of printmaking through one of the most influential periods of art from 1875 through 1914. Considered ground-breaking in their time, artists in the last decades of 19th century France developed radical new ways to paint and their experiments continued in the creation of their lithographs, etchings, drypoints and mezzotints. Through their work in printmaking, the artists began to depict images of suburban and rural leisure outside of Paris. New railway lines radiating out from the city made travel so convenient that Parisians flooded to the countryside every weekend. The boating life, restaurant dining and other leisure activities were popular subject matter. The city of Paris itself, renovated between 1853 and 1870 by Emperor Napoleon III, with its wide boulevards, public gardens and grand buildings, often was depicted in prints. Working people, including singers, dancers and people enjoying the popular cafés, concerts and theaters were included in scenes of urban life. This era of Western European history is known as Belle Époque (French for ‘beautiful era’). It was characterized by a sense of optimism, economic prosperity and regional peace. There was a burst of technological and scientific innovation and Paris became the cultural center where music, theater, and the visual arts flourished. Impressionism was a significant movement, as its embrace of modern life made it the springboard for later avant-garde art in Europe.

Ethereal Figurative Bronzes By Sculptor Ira Reines Exhibited This Summer In Old Gallery Currently a resident of Connecticut, Ira Reines was born in New York City in 1957. He spent his elementary school years in Indianapolis where his interest in art first developed. At the age of 19, he was hired by the Medallic Art Company of Danbury, Connecticut to sculpt medallions. There he learned and honed advanced plaster working skills. In 1980, the iconic Art Deco artist Romain de Tirtoff, known as Erté, hired the young artist to translate his celebrated couture designs, drawings and paintings into sculpture. Their collaboration, which lasted 11 years until Erté’s death, produced 70 bronzes. Since that time, Reines

has explored, through his figurative sculpture, humanity’s quest for faith, love, inspiration, hope and an understanding of our place in the universe. His work is included in the collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, England, the Shanghai Duolon Museum of Modern Art, Shanghai, China, and the Four Arts Botanical Garden in Palm Beach, Florida. A private collection of his recent work organized in cooperation with Winn/ Slavin Contemporary Art, as well as selections of his collaborations with Erté, will be on exhibition from July 23 – October 1 in the Museum’s Old Gallery.

Presented in partnership with M. SUSAN HARDWICK In cooperation with the MARTHA & MERRITT DEJONG FOUNDATION and the DAUS FAMILY FOUNDATION in memory of JOHN J. DAUS

First Exhibition Of New Five-year Series Features Drawings By Skip Steinworth Fifteen exceptionally gifted artists from across the country joined with the Evansville Museum in 2007 to participate in Object Project, an experiment in observation in which the artists agreed to create one or two paintings per person, with the only stipulation being that five common objects would appear in some fashion in each composition. Created in a variety of media, the collection delighted, amused and challenged viewers of the exhibition in Evansville and at four additional museums as part of a national tour. One of the best outcomes of this collaboration was the continued development of relationships between the artists, the Museum and the Evansville community. A decade later, we are pleased to launch a series of five exhibitions to be held from 2017 through 2021, through which we are

able to take a closer look at the recent work of five of the accomplished Object Project artists. In addition, the artists will serve as artists-in-residence, presenting demonstrations, public programs or master classes.

Dynamic Blown Glass By Brook F. White Exhibited In John Streetman Alcove For Brook Forrest White, Jr., the art of glass blowing is magical. His discovery of it while a graduate fellow at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky captured his imagination. White earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Centre in government in 1991, but went on to become the school’s first graduate fellow in art. He continued his studies at the Appalachian Center for Crafts in Smithville, Tennessee. In 2009, he studied with the Australian master glass maker Benjamin Edois. White’s extensive experience with glass blowing includes apprenticeships with artists Curtis Brock, Stephen Rolfe Powell, Lino Tagliapietra and Marvin Liposky. Ceramics By Alisa (Al) Holen Featured This Summer Assistant chair of the department of art and an assistant professor of ceramics at the University of Southern Indiana, Alisa (Al) Holen is a consistent award winner in regional competitions. Her ceramics will be exhibited in the John Streetman Alcove from May 7 – September 3.

When Holen arrived at the University of Southern Indiana in 2011, she introduced her students, the University and the community to Empty Bowls, a national fundraising event designed to fight hunger by crafting and selling ceramic bowls and donating the proceeds to local charities. She incorporated the event as a service learning component for her ceramics classes and invited USI employees and community groups to participate in creating bowls. The annual event has become a favorite of novice potters and loyal supporters who eagerly buy the one-of-a-kind bowls to support important local causes.

When asked about what influenced her to become an artist, Holen tells the story that, growing up, she didn’t know that dads watched football on weekends. She thought dads went to the art studio on the weekends. Her father, the sculptor Norman D. Holen, was a professor of art at Ausberg College in Minneapolis, Minnesota. There is nothing especially dangerous in viewing an eclipse. What can be dangerous is associating that when the Sun is showing during an eclipse, it is somehow “ok” to look at the Sun. This could not be further from the truth. Anytime the Sun is visible, it should only be viewed using an approved method, or with proper eye protection. We will demonstrate how you and your family can safely observe all parts the eclipse at workshops during our Eclipse Weekend. In addition, those signing up for either of our two excursions to totality will receive complimentary Eclipse Glasses (see below). These may be worn over the eyes to view the Moon’s progress across the Sun on eclipse day. At locations where the eclipse is total, the eclipse of August 21 may be safely viewed without eye protection. At this time—and only under conditions of totality—is it safe to view the eclipse with the eye and through binoculars, telescopes and other equipment. During these few minutes you will see the utterly black mask of the Moon, the pearly white outer regions of our Sun and the lovely red chemosphere phenomena which appear at the disk.
