From text, to memory, to drawing, to atmosphere, to model. to material, to space and scale, to observation intervention in space. In this sequence of events, intuition and analysis are taken seriously and imaginatively realized with coura ge and faith in experimentation. The workshop «Space Perception_Memoryspace» be gins with the analysis of a very personal space, a spati al memory from childhood. The students imaginatively represent their personal space in the form of texts, charcoal drawings, models, fotografs and plans. Students explore through a series of exercises the qualities of space and identify aspects of spatial atmo sphere such as: spatial composition, effect of light and spatial structure. The perception of space is explored and questioned and serves as a design basis for any future architectural work. Aim of the exercise is to crea te a balance of intuition and analysis that creates inno vative spaces with atmosphere.

Flour bags in the corner were stacked them in the sunlight through the curtains, I could of the room was an old fashioned counter crowded back and forth , alternately crossing the walkway more cramped . The flour machine in the middle room . This was the machine that the family depended heart. Its strong vitality made the whole room vibrate sense of order, sparse and fuzzy beads of sweat shined was mixed with water and reacted wonderfully with and softness, the dough was broken up, crushed crystallization of industrious hands. The chaotic scene was methodic , as if I could faintly hear the whispers gradually disappeared in the years Dust broke in the sun, and the sweet smell of fermented with the irresistible smile like ignited chili powder

In this symphony of loose rhythm and shined in the glow of the setting sun. The flour with the machine . In this collision of hardness and compressed into a productive scene actually let me produce illusion that it whispers of the industrial civilization that had fermented dough filled the air. The raised flour, powder, filled with my love of the worldly.

The room was on the ground floor of a building, There were large areas of Windows. At sunset, sunlight entered the room through the half closed curtains, reflecting off the flour particles flying in the air, creating a soft, hazy atmosphere

When the machine which was in the middle was running, the noise was centered on the spread out around the room, filling the whole rhythm of noise, noisy but methodic

My childhood knowledge of machines came from this press flour machine, which was cold but powerful, dangerous but methodic, like a heart an unshakable giant It worked without sleeping, to work to support the life of the family, like a heart made of steel

In summer, the room is very dark but cool on the north side of it. When I open the window room . It was lonely in such a dark and cool room made me relax and purified my soul. In winter Kang in it is like sleeping in a warm cave. It is safe in it. When I opened the window between spill into the room . Carlos ( 郑 A seemingly unlocked It was a quiet backyard surrounded by three isolated the courtyard from the vibrant field house and the archway further compressed sunlight to enter. The arrangement of large operations . The large stones were uneven, had a lingering feeling of damp , cold and silence was not small, and the silent atmosphere gave touched , and the usually open door declared the courtyard look light and intangible instead is so far away. Beams of light were rare, which were always spot was divided into several small pieces by allow flying dust particles to challenge the and the three wooden houses were each connected were mysterious but seemed suspicious. Sitting on the stone steps , you could feel the was so fresh with a little wood fragrance. the outside world, the ears were always surrounded only belonged one alone . Any second visible nobody, the courtyard showed a biting desolation

郑 ⼦ 怿 ) ) unlocked silence three old wooden houses . The towering gate archway field suburbs . The protruding eaves of the wooden compressed the size of the courtyard, providing less space for stones in the courtyard formed some simple sinking with a little dead moss , so that the courtyard always silence, even if it might actually be dry. The courtyard gave the illusion that the boundaries could not be declared the bright field suburbs of the outside, making instead, but it seemed that the world outside the door always cold . What should have been a large piece of light by the internal sinking spaces , and the beams did not loneliness and the tranquility here . The courtyard connected by narrow and dark passageways , which the hard breathing of the wood seams, and the air But it was more of a sense of uneasiness. Looking at surrounded by an excessive silence of the isolation . It visible creature made it disharmonious . But if there was desolation . In this restless

The first painting is mainly based on the feeling of the backyard from sitting on a sto ne step as a child. Although there is a yard connected to the sky, it feels like the sky had lost touch with it, so I made the small yard narrow and not as bright as the out door, so that the gate seems like the only place that can escape this disturbing silen ce With curved brush strokes trying to distort the space to increase the sense of dis tance, blurred and elongated straight lines convey a desire for the world outside the doors and are difficult to reach So near and yet so far

The twisted distance

This painting lengthen the spatial distance. Slit channels are longer and numerous, trying to appear more oppressive, inaccessible and inaccessible There was originally a straight path which abstract became a broken line path that seemed likely to fall down at any time, and each turning point is just connected to the passage between the long and narrow walls. The walls seemed to be twisting and trying to drive to the gate, and the threshold became too difficult to climb The steps, and the gate place is painted as a seemingly rotating whirlpool, in order to further strengthen this distant, restless, helpless atmosphere sense. You can completely see where the end is, but it is difficult to reach because of distance, distortion, unknown and uneasiness, and when alone in it, this feeling is even stronger because of loneliness and silence.

Confusion and escape

Although there is a gate connecting to the external world, some narrow surrounding channels still make this seemingly closed space unknown, and the sense of «distan ce» and the internal sinking space hinder the route, so I think there is still such a unea siness. So I have added this painting that corresponds to the plane of the yard. Al though actually there are not so many sinking spaces, I exaggerated the quantity and twisted the shape

Papermodell exploration

Papermodell exploration

This paper model further emphasizes the narrowing of gaps, the di cult road, the occlusion and compression of space. It corresponds to the rst painting, but there are also abstract concepts of the second painting, such as too tortuous roads.

This paper model mainly explains this sense of distance, disguise the visual di eren ce with the size di erence of the paper. The embedding naturally creates narrow gaps, and the positions of the paper belts and the light form the shadow which corre sponds to the tortuous road in the second painting.

Papermodell exploration

This paper model corresponds to the third painting. Although there is an exit, ever ything around it still makes people uneasy in loneliness, because everything around it seems to be so similar and closed. I use more curved lines and surfaces to highlight this feeling.

Modellexploration

Modellexploration

Plan A still emphasizes the distance, twists, and loneliness of spatial percepti on,which combines the concepts of the rst and second paper models. Two materials of gypsum bandage and plastic soil were speci cally tested. Gypsum bandage tes ting serves as the light transmittance of the top and as its own support. The opaque plastic soil serves as the material for the base and surrounding walls. Maybe the dis tortion made by hand is more re ective of the uneasiness in this atmosphere of the distance and loneliness, but in the actual production process making a mold rst may be better.

Variations of Modells

Variations of Modells

Plan C was mainly developed from the second paper model, which will be adopted to make the nal model. So, additional tests include gypsum casting, cutting 3mm boards (really hard) and sticking metallic paper to the boards. Gypsum is used as a base, boards make walls and covered with thin planks and woven bamboo strips for the top.

Variations of Modells

Plan B is a fusion of the concepts of the second and third paper models, and in parti cular, the third paper model has a very closed and similar spatial perception of ever ything looking around except for one exit. One of the two materials tested is bamboo strips and the other is a sponge block, in fact, the two materials can be replaced with each other and the two materials tested for Scheme A. The bamboo strips are woven into a hollow center shape covered at the top of the model to simulate the gaps in the patio and board. The base and wall below are basically the last paper model for a ma terial to make, although the test here is to dig up the sponge block part, but may ac tually use opaque plastic soil or gypsum to make the base is more suitable for the at mosphere described. Curved walls may be made with hard paper or easily curved pieces of wood.
