It’s an exciting, all day celebration as the The Kings will arrive at the Municipal Auditorium at 11am in a horse-drawn carriage to greet and take photos with the children, making the day as magical as possible. A little different to previous years, the 2026 parade will depart from La Cala del Moral at 4.00pm but will travel along the usual route, before ending in Torre de Benagalbon at 7.00pm. Chilly new year MORE than 100 balmy expats in Almuñecar are preparing for the annual New Year’s tradition of the first wild sea swim of the year on Playa San Cristobal. The quirky custom, was started over two decades ago by Scandinavian expatriates through the association Los Nórdicos Almuñecar, and began as a small group of Swedish retirees keeping their homeland’s cold-water dipping habit alive. It has since grown into the Costa Tropical’s biggest New Year’s Day event, drawing more than 100 participants, including locals and holidaymakers, and has gone on to inspire thousands around Spain. On New Year’s Day, hardy souls will gather on the central beach from around 10am. Dips happen spontaneously in the late morning to midday, under, hopefully, mild winter sunshine. Many wear festive Santa hats, reindeer antlers, or Christmas decorations, creating a
AFTER heavy rain forced the postponement of the hugely popular 16th San Silvestre Velezana, runners and families in the Axarquia region are preparing for a jolly restart on Sunday, January 4, at 11.30am. Originally planned for late December, the festive end-of-year run was rescheduled due to adverse weather warnings, with safety in mind for all participants. Organised by the Club de Atletismo Velez Rincon Dental, the event will no doubt have the same hilarious atmosphere that has made it a local tradition for more than 15 years. The community-focused race isn’t about breaking records or running the fastest - it’s all about fun, togetherness, and celebrating with your neighbours. Runners of all ages and fitness levels are encouraged to don creative costumes, with special prizes for the best disguises as well as category awards. The main 5km urban route winds through town streets, starting near the town hall and finishing at Plaza del Carmen, while younger runners enjoy a shorter 1km loop. Local expatriates living in the area are particularly invited to join this event, perfect for integrating into the vibrant community spirit. With a charity toy drive and family-friendly feel, it’s an ideal way to kick off 2026 with laughter and camaraderie. Registrations via atletismovelez.es. Credit: Turismo Rincon de la Victoria
