It’s the most wonderful time of the year, when you go back and forth with family about what to do in between meals. Tell pops you want to whack it, and suggest a trip to this miniature golf course that’s popped up on the St. Pete Pier. Holiday music, merry obstacles and decorations surround the 18-hole course, and be prepared to fork over an extra $5 if your biodegradable ball falls into the ultimate water hazard (the ocean surrounding the Sunshine City’s $92 million gem). CITY OF TAMPA

Noche Buena is a Christmas Eve tradition that Hispanic and Filipino communities celebrate each December, and it usually involves some drinking, late-night eating and the occasional prayer. Ybor City’s La Sétima Club hosts its own version, featuring lots of the drinking and eating but none of the praying. And since La Sétima only serves plant-based fare, Chef David Lamb is whipping up a special menu of Puerto Rican-inspired dishes alongside daily offerings of veganized boudin-filled egg rolls and muffaletta-inspired sliders. Stick around for its Parranda Navideña carolers—who will be singing their Boricua version of Christmas classics around 6:30 p.m.—before grabbing a bottle of natural wine for Christmas dinner the next day. According to USA Today, many Hispanic, Latino and Filipino families throughout the diaspora celebrate Noche Buena—which translates into “the good night”—on Christmas Eve because of traditions connected with religion and Spanish colonization. Noche Buena: Sunday, Dec. 24. 5 p.m.-midnight. No Cover. La Sétima Club, 815 E 7th Ave, Tampa. @lasetimaclub on Instagram—Kyla Fields

Gallerie 909 and St. Pete Youth Farm team up in South St. Pete for a celebration of community, culture and family. Kwanzaa typically runs for seven days between Dec.26- Jan. 1, when it commemorates seven different principles rooted in ancient African culture each day. To help kick off this year’s rendition, the St. Pete Youth Farm is honoring the concept of Umoja or “unity.” “Umoja stresses the imporCITYOFSTPETE/FLICKR tance of maintaining togetherness for the family and the community,’ the group wrote on Facebook. “This is reflected in the African Proverb: I AM because WE are.” There’s free parking at Enoch D Davis Center (1111 18th Ave. S), and, the St. Pete Youth Farm also hosts a variety of other events like its community and mental health wellness groups, mini garden workshops, volunteer days and its annual MLK “Day of Service” on Jan. 15. First celebrated in 1966, Kwanzaa honors the values of “family, culture, community, and the harvest” and is a modern, African American interpretation of traditional African harvest or “first fruits” festivals. 10th annual Kwanzaa Celebration: Tuesday, Dec. 26. 5 p.m.-8 p.m. No cover. David Benstock, executive chef and owner of St. Pete restaurant IL Ritorno, produces multiple tasting menus and specialty dinners throughout the year, and this 2023 finale is a modern take on the historic Italian tradition of the Feast of the Seven Fishes. Each of the seven dishes will be served familystyle–like you’re at dinner with your cousins—and you can always add a wine pairing for an additional price. While IL Ritorno hasn’t released its complete Christmas Eve menu just yet, its PR team says there will be “caviar, both raw and cooked oysters, branzino, clam pasta, scallop risotto, dungeness crab spaghetti and black grouper” featured throughout its seven courses. Reservations run from 5 p.m.-11 p.m. and can be made on the restaurant’s Tock page. According to the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, the Feast of the seven Fishes originates from 20th century Italian-American immigrants who “combined classic Italian dishes with seafood, using the sea as a representation of the connection between their home country and new one.” Feast of the Seven Fishes / Christmas Eve dinner: Sunday, Dec. 24. 5 p.m.-11 p.m. $215. Tampa City Council gets first reading of juvenile curfew on Dec. 21. By Arielle Stevenson

established. Other successful local challenges happened in Pinellas Park and Tampa. Zelman also noted that the ordinance her team drafted would shore up city code with the state’s own juvenile curfew statute from 1994. Florida’s 1994 juvenile curfew statute came in the wake of Democratic President Bill Clinton’s 1994 Crime Bill. The state statute relies on a Dallas curfew upheld by a Federal appellate court in November 1993 and allows local governments to create their own based on that language. In 1996, Clinton publicly advocated for juvenile curfews, and as of 2023, more than 400 towns, cities, and counties have ordinances. In 2018, The Marshall Project reported on the origins of the “curfew myth,” citing

GATEKEEPERS: A new curfew could be enacted in the wake of an October shooting in Ybor City. Princeton professor John Dilulio’s flawed and now-debunked “super-predator” theory that alleged “juveniles are doing homicidal violence in wolf packs.” Dilulio later said, “The super-predator idea was wrong. Once it was out there, though, it was out there. There was no reeling it in.” And Tampa has tried juvenile curfews in the past.

the Juvenile Justice Clinic at George University’s Law School, told NPR she thinks juvenile curfews are “ineffective, more harmful than helpful and really a reactive response instead of a thoughtful, careful strategy for managing crime in our city.” Last June, even far-right Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott signed a statewide ban on juvenile curfews. Tampeños like Luis Salazar, with the Hillsborough County LGBTQ Democratic Caucus, told city council that Ybor City is being targeted in this approach, while other parts of the city with gun violence go untouched. “The only thing this is going to do is create more development and gentrification,” Salazar said at the meeting, “And build towers of houses that people like us will never see the inside of unless we’re cleaning them.” Salazar added that he grew up in a town with strict curfew laws. “The last thing it made me do was respect the police,” Salazar said at the meeting. “In fact, the only thing it really taught me was to run and run real fast.” Victor DiMaio of DiMaio and Associates—a Ybor City and West Tampa native—raised concerns about how the proposed juvenile curfew will be implemented. “The question is not so much about the curfew,” DiMaio said at the meeting. “The question really is about enforcement…What are you going to do with those kids? How are you going to treat them?” According to chief Bercaw, when it comes to implementing the juvenile curfew, “the key is discretion.” Bercaw also reiterated his focus on the “Orlando model” for policing late night crowds, adding that he’s “sent commanders to Orlando to look at how it works.” Not everyone agreed that’s Orlando approach would work in Tampa. Luke Lirot, a Clearwater First Amendment attorney who famously defended strip club owner Joe Redner in the 1990s, cautioned against using Orlando as a model for Tampa’s historic entertainment district. He also noted Ybor is already implementing many measures Orlando now requires, like security cameras, ID scanners, and metal detectors. “Ybor City is entirely different than the area in Orlando that was the subject of their regulations,” Lirot said at the meeting. He instead advocated using a carefully worded juvenile curfew instead of further restrictions on continued on page 20

ampa City Council recently voted 5-2 to give a juvenile curfew ordinance its public first reading on Dec. 21. Councilmembers Bill Carlson and Lynn Hurtak voted against the motion during a Dec. 7 meeting, citing concerns over who might be targeted and a lack of data to support the curfew’s effectiveness. “I do not want to disincentivize people of age from going down to Ybor with the fear that they’re going to be carded by the police,” Hurtak said at the meeting. “There are minority communities that are very fearful, and they’re concerned about being approached by a law enforcement officer.” The discussion came in the wake of a deadly Ybor City shooting on Oct. 29. During last week’s meeting, Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw updated council on the shooting, and said that TPD has charged 14-year-old Kadyn Abney with second-degree murder with a firearm in the death of Harrison Boonstoppel. Abney, said Bercaw, is being charged as an adult. The chief also said the reward for information on the shooting leading to an arrest has gone from $5,000 to $31,500. Two days after the shooting, Councilmember Gwen Henderson saw her proposed 1 a.m. curfew for Ybor City resoundingly rejected. The city’s legal department suggested a juvenile curfew instead. Tampa City Attorney Andrea Zelman told council there are no criminal penalties imposed by the new ordinance alone. The curfew would apply citywide for people under 16 years old after 11 p.m. on Sunday-Thursday, and after midnight on Fridays, Saturdays, and legal holidays. First-time offenders get a warning, and for the second time, a $50 penalty is imposed. “It doesn’t affect the hours of business of any operations in Ybor City,” Zelman said at the meeting.“It just gives the police department an additional tool in their tool belt to stop a juvenile that is, in their eyes, out on the streets much later than they should be.” Zelman added the statute has “never been challenged.” While it’s true Florida’s state statute hasn’t been challenged, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) unsuccessfully challenged a Dade County ordinance shortly after it was

From 1994-2015, Tampa had a juvenile curfew on the books, but it wasn’t implemented for 11 of those 21 years due to legal challenges that the ordinance was unconstitutional. Ultimately, the city’s curfew was officially removed in November 2015. The potential return of a youth curfew is cause for concern for some in the community. “You cannot chastise our children, control our children,” community activist Connie Burton said at the meeting. “You did the ‘Biking While Black,’ then ‘Housing While Black,’ and now this ‘Roundup while Black.’ Do something different.” Councilwoman Henderson, whose district includes Ybor City, said, “This is a different type of situation when it comes to targeting.” But Hurtak echoed concerns about the city’s controversial “crime-free housing” and “biking while Black” programs, both of which are under investigation by the Department of Justice.

“I’m concerned because we still have two Department of Justice inquiries about targeting minorities,” Hurtak said. “I’m very concerned that this will be a minority targeting issue.” There’s data to support Hurtak’s concerns, too. A 2016 review of 12 studies on juvenile curfews found, “The evidence suggests that juvenile curfews do not reduce crime or victimization.” Last September, Kristin Henning, director of

DEJA VU: Tampa’s had juvenile curfews before. continued from page 17 businesses in Ybor (even if it worked in Orlando), many of which Lirot’s firm represents. Bercaw told the council that the Ybor City public safety plan is in the works, noting that “any plan going forward is not a police plan. It’s a community plan.” Most in attendance and on council agreed that implementing the city’s parking ordinance is part of the solution for deterring youth from loitering in Ybor’s adjacent parking lots. An ordinance already in the city’s codes requires parking lots to have attendants, but it’s rarely enforced. “It’s clear that’s where the people are hanging out and getting drinks illegally, the coming up to Seventh Avenue,” Hurtak said. Developers like Casey Ellison of Ellison Development chimed in to support the curfew last week. His company, Ellison Construction (formerly EWI Construction), built out the Oxford Exchange, Stovall House, and Armature Works, and Sparkman Wharf. Ellison also built Hotel Haya, which is owned, in part, by Tampa developer Darryl Shaw who has been a vocal proponent of implementing a curfew. (Shaw also published an op-ed supporting a 1 a.m. curfew in the Tampa Bay Times, a paper he has previously loaned money to). Other Ybor City business owners voiced support for a juvenile curfew ordinance, too. Andrea Gonzmart Williams, whose father, Richard Gonzmart, owns the Columbia Restaurant and 1905 Family of Restaurants, said, “My father always told me nothing good happens after midnight… It would help children be home where they belong. And not on the streets.” But as Burton pointed out, it’s not that simple for some families. And a juvenile curfew

could target those who need community support the most. “Do you understand that there are many children in our community that is homeless?” Burton said at the meeting. “Do you understand that many families in our community is living from pillar to post because they cannot afford, as this community continued to gentrify the poor and impoverished, to outset and outfit those of affluence?” Councilman Carlson called the proposed juvenile curfew a kneejerk solution, adding that, “I’ve talked to police officers on the street, and they said this didn’t work before, it’s not going to work again.” Bercaw told Carlson those officers were probably referring to the old ordinance, “Clearly, that didn’t work, and that’s why it was unconstitutional. That’s why the state adopted this.” “I don’t think we’ve thoroughly investigated this,” Carlson responded. Others on council offered other ways to address the idea of local youth being out late. Hurtak and Henderson both contended that more youth programming was needed or what is commonly called “stay and plays.” “We used to have dances and things that we could participate in that were all teenagers,” Henderson said. “We’re going to have to work really hard to give students an opportunity to hang out in safe spaces in crowds that are of the appropriate age.” But that’s not as simple as implementing a citywide juvenile curfew. Youth programming, as Hurtak pointed out, is “expensive and takes time, but that’s the stuff that’s gonna keep kids off the streets.” The first of two readings for the juvenile curfew ordinance is scheduled for Dec. 21.

From there, the two never really lost touch and continued to have active conversations about their future goals in service and consulting. tattoo shop owner-turned-contractor, a food and beverage vet, and an independent cocktail program consultant with 16 years of experience at one of the world’s best steakhouses walk into a bar. That bar is Big Easy in Ybor City, a New Orleans-themed labor of love built for owner Pat Riley’s then-girlfriend some eight years ago. Now, driving its revamp are Tampa’s dean of cocktail culture, Dean Hurst and industry expert Daniel Bareswilt. And while Big Easy has seen its own ups and downs, its future looks bright with these two established creatives behind the wheel. Their story of partnership began eight years ago as well, coincidentally, when Bareswilt moved to Tampa and began doing research on who was taking the bar career path seriously in the area. “Dean’s name came up a lot when I moved here,” Bareswilt tells Creative Loafing Tampa Bay. “Pretty much one of the only names that came up consistently, so he was someone I became aware of right away.” Bareswilt insists on telling this part of the story. “One day, I was working behind the bar at Ulele,” he says, “when I heard my name coming from a friend. I look over and my friend’s sitting with Dean who I recognized from my internet search and I just blurted out: ‘You’re Dean Hurst!—” “Loudly,” Hurst laughs. “And somehow I didn’t scare him away too much that day,” Bareswilt says. From there, they kept the conversations going and in 2016, Hurst left his 16-year career at Bern’s—which he says wasn’t an easy decision to make as much as it was a very easy decision to make. With a newborn on the way, he wanted those first three months, completely uninterrupted, to be the type of dad he wanted to be. And so, he’d also spent a good amount of time laying the groundwork for keeping Bern’s as his first client, helping the storied Tampa steakhouse continue to seek out new, rare, and weird stuff. “That was something that I had established early on in my path and that was always the direction I was heading in,” Hurst says. “Curiosity drove everything I did.” And it’s what led Hurst to linking up with Bareswilt a few years ago as he consulted for Gin Joint in downtown Tampa, which was seeking a bar manager whose vision and dedication to a certain level of hospitality experience aligned with his. “I had a short list of people I wanted to work with,” Hurst says. “And Dan was on it.

in running the bar. “And that’s when I introduced Daniel into working on this together,” Hurst says of that turning point in early 2023. But the road ahead has not come without obstacles or sacrifice. “We’re reintroducing ourselves to a neighborhood that’s seen a lot of change,” Bareswilt notes. And one that will continue to see change as the district’s GasWorx project develops Ybor and the surrounding area further. “We’re doing the work of reshaping the business, but also the physical, manual work of being behind the bar and being present with guests,” Hurst says, “teaching everyone and providing them with our view of hospitality.” Along the way, they’re building a pretty all-star team, too—one that is helping them execute at the level they know is possible for the world-renowned New Orleans style of food, drink, and hospitality. After making a few difficult decisions, Hurst now says they have a team they truly believe in, a team that’s come together by no stroke of luck. “Maurice was sent to us from Cody,” Hurst says. And that’s Cody Tiner, executive chef of District Tavern who Dean met while working together at Gin Joint. “Chance was previously Ray Lampe’s Pitmaster and then Sous Chef; I did work with him at Dr. BBQ when we built out Burnt Ends and he’d show up at 6 a.m. to roast all the meats.” continued on page 47

ANNALISE MABE

BITTER TRUTH: At the end of 2022, Big Easy’s owner admitted the current model was not sustainable. continued from page 45 One day, they gave Chance a menu of things they wanted to serve eventually, and two days later he had recipes written for them. “The third day, we were cooking them,” Bareswilt says, “platings and everything.” And with Cheney, the kitchen manager, Aaron, who’s got incredible drive, and Joe who is a genius at prep, the team is gelled, Hurst says. “What can I do to challenge them?” For starters? All food is scratch-made with intention. Bareswilt, who just finished a Monday Hospitality Night special of pork ribs in a coffee and cayenne dry rub served with homemade guava BBQ sauce explains exactly what this means. “I don’t buy ranch dressing,” he says. “I buy buttermilk and mayonnaise and I buy spices and I make the ranch.” Same goes with the rest of their ingredients. It’s this approach to their food that is setting them apart from other bars serving “bar food” in the area. And the results are proving worth their time and efforts. Already, they’ve seen one guy come in who was visiting the area who ordered three of their beef po’ boys in 24 hours. If you’re curious, it’s their take on a classic, featuring slow roasted brisket, debris gravy, romaine lettuce, and tomato, served on freshly baked Sullivan Street mezzo doppio hoagie bread. Another woman came in and said: “This is the prettiest salad I’ve ever had at a bar.” “She did think it was delicious as well,” Hurst adds. “And it didn’t take a whole lot of work, but it takes being mindful and intentional with your moves.” It comes down to freshness, and the team here agrees on not cutting corners.

“When the bar gets super busy like we were on Saturday night,” Hurst says, “it’s easy to cut a corner. Is the average consumer really going to know if we squeezed lemon juice fresh or if we bought a good frozen product? Most people won’t know the difference, but we don’t ever put that product out.” And if they don’t have what you’re looking for behind the bar, they’re more than ready to take the opportunity to introduce you to something new, pour a taste, and “share delicious things.” “I look over and see a guy come in after work, stressed, asking for an end-of-day martini,” Bareswilt says, “I know the feeling because I’ve had that drink before and I’ve had a long day before. But being able to make that drink with intention and care, serve it, and see that little reprieve in our guests, that’s what I love about it.” Up next, the Big Easy team is rolling out a late-night menu (so Ybor night-goers can have more options beyond a pizza slice) and will work to merge Ybor’s daytime and nighttime rhythms with Saturday and Sunday brunch complete with a jazz trio or quartet in the front corner. “A lot of the newer things in town are working to sell exclusivity,” Bareswilt says, “but that’s not what New Orleans is or what this concept is. We’re about inclusivity and taking care of each other.” “We want everybody who walks through the door to feel welcome, relaxed, and happy,” Hurst says. “That’s the goal.” Stop by and scope out their limited Holiday Cocktail menu featuring the Yuletide Daisy, the Lumberjack, and the Grasshopper, which Hurst says is amazing, featuring cognac, menthe, cacao, and cream. Or pass on through on New Year’s Eve to ring in the New Year with bubbles, Bourbon Street style.

hile some folks worry about grabbing lastminute presents before Christmas, others are marking their calendars for a popular bakery’s yearly holiday market. Jamison B. Breadhouse hosts its annual holiday market on Friday-Saturday, Dec. 22-23 from 3 p.m.-7 p.m. (or until sold-out) at the bakery’s grab-and-go shop called The DoughJoe, located at 1806 N Nebraska Ave. on the outskirts of Ybor City. From specialty focaccia loaves and breakfast pastries to dinner rolls, traditional holiday treats and decadent desserts, Jamison B. DoughJoe will certainly impress your relatives at Christmas dinner. The bakery isn’t accepting any pre-orders and both days of its holiday market are first-come, first-served, but you can always grab a coffee at the DoughJoe’s neighbor Flan Factory while you wait in line. The holiday market menu can be browsed on its website, and consists of artisan focaccia loaves that feed up to eight people, breakfast pastries like chocolate pecan babka cinnamon rolls and chocolate cherry sourdough, ciabatta rolls for the dinner table and desserts like dark chocolate and olive oil cupcakes and its prized, $62 triple chocolate panettone. Tampa Improv’s new name, and more comedy news. By Michael Murillo

T

he comedy club in Ybor City has been known as Tampa Improv since it opened more than 20 years ago. But now it’s called Funny Bone. So what’s really changed? Turns out, nothing but the signage. The club—located at 1600 E 8th Ave.—has the same ownership, the same management, the same booking and the same schedule as what was Tampa Improv. In fact, the club was always part of the Funny Bone family, which is a chain of comedy clubs across the country. Co-owner Todd Leinenbach told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay that legendary Improv owner Bud Friedman approached the ownership group and offered them a licensing deal so they would gain some immediate name recognition for their comedy clubs and get some experienced booking, too. They agreed, and a number of Funny Bone clubs operated as Improvs. Over the years, the group took over their own booking and made the Funny Bone name a popular one with comedians and patrons in other cities. So, as the current licensing deals are expiring, they decided to use the name they’ve built themselves, and convert some existing Improvs to Funny Bones. While other clubs will remain Improvs as their licensing deals are still in effect, the clubs in Orlando, Kansas City and Cleveland will be changing their names as well. While he’s happy to have Tampa operating under the Funny Bone name, Leinenbach doesn’t think it matters what you name a comedy club. He told CL that it’s what goes on inside that keeps people coming back. “The success or failure is strictly the acts you put on that stage, and the customer experience,” he added. For lineups and ticketing, visit tampa. funnybone.com.

and so many other cities. One day we should have a destination event where several national acts come here to gather and perform. Well, maybe one day isn’t enough. How about four days? Say, Jan. 11-14 next month? That’s the schedule for Tampa Bay’s very first Sunshine Comedy Fest, when dozens of comedians will perform stand-up comedy, record podcasts, hold meet-and-greets, and have fun in the sun when a lot of the country is shoveling sidewalks and sporting thermal underwear. Shows will be held at comedy clubs such as Side Splitters and Sunshine City Comedy Club, as well as venues like Coastal Creative and the Floridian Social.

Inaugural Sunshine Comedy Festival comes to Tampa Bay this January The Tampa Bay area is becoming a pretty strong stand-up comedy destination, with plenty of clubs, independent shows, and open mics to keep crowds entertained with live performances. What Tampa Bay doesn’t have is a comedy festival, like the famous ones in Montreal, Atlanta, San Francisco, New York,

Benefit show raises $7K for beloved Tampa comedian Steve Miller On Nov. 28 a roomful of laughter for comedian Steve Miller raised about $7,000, and the spirits of a local who’s going through a lot right now. “It was overwhelming to realize how much support I have around me,” Miller said about

the show at Side Splitters in Tampa, which sold out and featured performances from many of his friends. As many in the Tampa Bay comedy scene know, Miller—who has contributed to Creative Loafing Tampa Bay—is going through an expensive and emotional battle with bladder cancer, so the money comes at the right time. A GoFundMe page that’s 75% of the way to its $20,000 goal is also active and accepting donations. Several local headliners donated a few minutes to the show to make it special, and Miller himself told jokes for about 20 minutes. In addition to the funds, Miller appreciated the outpouring of affection from both the comedians on stage and the audience who came out to support. “From the comics who donated their time and talent, to the friends and family who showed up, I don’t think I’ve ever been surrounded by that much love,” he said. “I felt like I got to go to my own funeral, but everyone was happy.”

The lineup will feature national acts such as Jeff Dye, Mike Cannon, and Troy Bond, as well as plenty of local talent. You’ll also see Best of the Bay alumni such as J.B. Ball and Cam Bertrand, who took their Best Comedian awards and are now touring the country after filming their own comedy specials. Many of the comics will play multiple sets at different venues, and there will also be workshops, showcases, latenight mics and after parties. Tickets ($95 & up) and info on the Sunshine Comedy Festival coming to multiple venues in Tampa Bay from Thursday-Sunday, Jan. 11-14 are available now via sunshinecomedyfest.com

C Brokenmold Holiday Party: Wild Child w/Raquel Lily & The Buko Boys/ Urbane Cowboys Rock and roll trio Johnny Mile & The Kilometers has a new moniker (Night Child) and an updated sound that keeps all the grit and peacocking of its progenitor intact while adding a welcome layer of power-pop sheen. The band is joined at this staple-of-the-Christmas-season show by Filipino pop songwriter Raquel Lily and Bay area Americana band Urbane Cowboys, which now features the big ass kickdrum of Alton Plemmons who normally keeps times for grunge duo Hovercar. (Hooch and Hive) Future Joy It’s been about eight months since Zach Simms and Emily Cooper played to a near-capacity crowd at Jannus Live, and while the livetronic, saxophone and sampledriven duo known as Future Joy was opening for genre favorite The Polish Ambassador, it gets to headline Gulfport’s quirky hippie enclave. Shannon Madrishin, a hairdresser who’s a mainstay at music festivals, will be onsite to get you lookin’ right, too. (Blueberry Patch, Gulfport) Taylor Reed The looper-loving alt-pop singer-songwriter has been playing holiday gigs around Tampa Bay, in which she’ll often strum and record a bit on her acoustic guitar for her looper to pick up, and while it’s repeating itself, she shows off her violin skills, partially developed while working with a street troupe in Ybor City years ago. (Riverwalk Stage at Straz Center, Tampa) C A Very Crowbar Christmas: Have Gun, Will Travel w/Kristopher James/ Camille Trust/Perception/Mountain Holler As with anyone, we love watching our local musician darlings take their material across the world, even if it means we have a sense of jealousy when one moves out of Florida and gets to experience winter for real. Take Camille Trust, for example. For nearly a decade before Covid-19 hit, the Tampa-bred singer-songwriter and her soulful pipes had been making a living in New York City. Once the pandemic shut things down, Trust moved back down south to be with her family, released the FL to NY EP, and even tore up the Kiley stage at the 2022 iteration of Gasparilla

Camille Trust Music Festival. Then, you have Mountain Holler, the “cavernous alt-folk” project of Mark Etherington, which moved to Seattle earlier this year and is thriving on festivals, opening slots, and an 80th birthday tribute to Joni Mitchell. Trust and Etherington are on the bill for Crowbar’s kickoff to Christmas weekend, so it’s looking like Ybor City will be the place to be if you want to not only indulge in one last concert before the family comes over, but also witness the equivalent of what an in-person gig filled with local royalty would have been like in the summer of 2020, had there been no lockdowns. With powerhouse soul vocalist-songwriter Kristopher James and ultra-smooth boom-bap rapper Perception on the bill, this one truly showcases some of the best homegrown Bay area talent—whether they stayed here or not. (Crowbar, Ybor City)

C Bad Santa Xmas Party: Pusha Preme w/Legend Tribe/more A show from Pusha Preme—Tampa’s masked purveyor of melodic hip-hop—is never just a concert, and this

one’s no different thanks to the addition of a full on vendor market, shoe drive benefiting Metropolitan Ministries, Christmas movie trivia, gift giving, Billboard plaque unveiling, Santa photos, and more. Best of the Baywinning poet and event curator Novacane hosts, meaning there will not be a dull moment. (Hooch and Hive, Tampa) The Dialogue Dr. Angela Galestro—aka one half of The Dialogue—might just be one of the mightiest flautists in Tampa Bay. On the Sarasota-based blues-salsa-pop-jazz-etcetera fusion outfit’s latest album Begin Again, Dr. Galestro performs a smooth flute section on the record’s bluesy, harmonious opening track “Phantom Love.” If you’re jonesing to hear live woodwind, you’re in luck, because the track is part of two, 20-song sets going down in Bradenton this weekend (each one will be a 50/50 split between holiday and original music). And, if you know anything about live flautists, you know she’s probably gonna make that flute section even longer and wilder than on the original recording. (Oscura, Bradenton)

C The Groves w/Mountain Holler and the New Dawn/Blake Daniels The end of Crowbar’s lease in 2026 looms inside the hearts of local live music fans, and it’s driven one band from that emerged on the scene 13 years ago to get back together for a one-off, 12 years after breaking up. “Tom [DeGeorge, owner of Crowbar] and I were chatting at the soundboard about life and the business and how it’s all evolved. He expressed that he was nearing the end of the Crowbar era of his life, and wanted to get some OG bands that he loved and had hosted in the past, to play there again before he ‘retires,'” frontman/guitarist J.T. Brown told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay. So he asked his bandmates—including bassist Jana Jones, always the heart and soul of the group but now Portland-based—and they were all in. They’ve been rehearsing old songs (textural Southern rock with psychedelic touches and a hint of dirt-road gospel) on Arrowhead Farms where The Groves had its first practice. “It’s where we wrote the first record, and it feels pretty cool to be fine-tuning the songs a decade later in the same spot. Full circle moments,” Brown added. “We have some surprises in store, some twists on the songs to update them a little, and we’re doing it all with way better gear, so the shit is gonna sound massive and tight.” Mark Etherington’s

cosmic folk project The New Dawn opens alongside Mellencamp-esque Bay area songwriter Blake Daniels. (Crowbar, Ybor City) Jarryd Dollard The owner of Tampa’s Signature Jazz Barber Lounge—who has both “playwright” and “B.B King All-Star Band” on his resume—performs an upbeat, humorloaded jazz set on the Riverwalk as part of the Straz Center’s “Live and Local” series. (Riverwalk Stage at Straz Center, Tampa) C Sermons Fest by Beatsnchill: Taylor Moon w/Young 40/Lafayette Stokely/ Reasy/Jordan Patrick/more On the latest season of their Saturday Sermons series, Beatsnchill’s Scott Arana (aka Scott Ayxe) & Derrick “Hmtwn” Hernandez shine light on some of the very best that Tampa Bay’s hip-hop scene has to offer (they even got sought-after Tampa producer Jordan Patrick to rap). For this show that’s easily the best rap show in this weekend, the series comes offline for a bonafide showcase of the scene’s up-andcomingest emcees, plus local favorites, too. (Music hall at New World Brewery, Tampa) C Trans-Siberian Orchestra We still miss Paul O’Neill, who died in a Tampa hotel room in 2017, but is it really the

56 | DECEMBER 21-27, 2023 | cltampabay.com

holidays until Trans-Siberian Orchestra comes home to Tampa? The symphonicrock outfit’s annual “The Ghosts of Christmas Eve” tour is said to have taken a new and expansive turn in its pyrotechnics and presentation as a whole, which, as usual, can be witnessed once in the afternoon, and again at night at the old Ice Palace. Oh, and don’t panic if you see that the band is in Detroit on the same day. No, the members are not super-humans, and no, there are no high-speed police escorts involved. Due to high demand, TSO has two separate ensembles that tour the U.S. every winter, and one of them happens to be holding its last show before Christmas at home. (Amalie Arena, Tampa)

MON 25

C New Granada’s Sorta-Annual Xmas Night Extravaganza: Meatwound w/ Rahim Samad/Slap of Reality/American Dreaming For a decade-and-a-half, producer and emcee Rahim Samad has been a heavyweight, albeit under-the-radar, staple of Tampa Bay’s hip-hop game. He’s also a scene champ mainstay at shows where his

name isn’t on the bill. For New Granada’s pretty-much-annual Christmas night show, Samad's distinctly east coast rap makes up the heart of a bill that wraps with one of the heaviest bands in the Bay (hardcore outfit Meatwound), plus old-school punk favorite Slap of Reality. American Dreaming, a new project from Will Quinlan, is also on the bill in an era that finds the statesman of Bay area Americana taking his sound in different directions (read: pop) as of late. (Hooch and Hive, Tampa)

THU 28

The Elovaters w/Shwayze/Surfer Girl It’s no wonder that the Boston-based reggae outfit—on the heels of its 10th anniversary of existing—is spending the last week of its year promoting its latest album Endless Summer in Florida. While some of us winter-lovers will bitch and whine every year without fail about how wearing shorts during Christmas week shouldn’t be a thing, at least we can provide a little extra sunlight for our friends visiting from up north. SHERVIN LAINEZ

No comps: New concerts coming to Tampa Bay

As organizers told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay in March, Tampa’s Gasparilla Music Festival (GMF) moves to a new venue this spring. And last week, they just unveiled the first wave of bands coming to Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park in February. Indie-pop favorite Young The Giant, soulful Americana roots act Lake Street Dive, and livetronic hip-hop and jazz duo Big Gigantic top the initial Gasparilla Music Festival lineup unveiled this morning. Production duo Louis the Child, playing its freestyle DJ “playground set,” rounds out the early slate of headliners. A daily schedule and full lineup is coming soon according to a press release, but per tradition, the joyful sound of Dr. Kevin Parrott’s Mt. Zion Gospel Choir will kick off one of the days. More indie-pop (Coin), pop-reggae songwriter Trevor Hall, old-school alt-hip-hop trio Digable Planets, bluegrass outfit Yonder Mountain String Band, New Orleans’ rowdy rebirth Brass Band, and Aidan Bissett—an alum of Tampa’s Jesuit High School— are among other notables among the nearly two dozen bands announced today (see the whole of the announcement via cltampa. com/music). Early bird tickets for Gasparilla Music Festival happening Friday-Sunday, Feb. 16-18 at Tampa’s Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park start at $60 for two-day general admission.

February’s party marks the first time GMF makes its home at Julian B. Lane, just a short walk upriver from Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park and Kiley Garden where the nonprofit festival launched in 2012. Last year, citing “water intrusion issues” reported in a 2021 evaluation by Walter P Moore engineering firm, the City of Tampa told CL that it would not issue permits for GMF to use Kiley. Not including retrofitting for a new drainage system, the firm estimated the probable cost of the base repair recommendations for Kiley at $9 million-$11 million. GMF continued to use Curtis Hixon for its 2023 festival where day two was kneecapped by a thunderstorm, but also added stages at Water Street, Sparkman Wharf and at the Sail Pavilion outside the Tampa Convention Center. The adaptation marked the first time the festival left park grounds since 2016, when it used MacDill Park, also just a short walk from Kiley. The GMF sitemap for Julian B. Lane finds all the music coming back to one location, which will be home to four stages, including a mainstage in the southeast corner of the park closest to the river. There are also stages near the park’s state of the art boathouse, a “Fortune” stage on the football field, and a stage near the park’s south west entrance near N Boulevard. The festival’s popular silent disco, happening Friday and Saturday, will also abut the festival kidzone, which hosts a Kids Fest on Sunday after gates open.

GMF’s outdoor food hall—Calle Cocina, which has traditionally featured the best of Tampa’s culinary palette—is set to take over the southern strip of Julian B. Lane. “We loved having the different stages along the Riverwalk last year, and it has been great to be able to work with our incredible partners at Water Street, the Straz Center and the Tampa Convention Center who are big supporters of live, local music,” David Cox, GMF’s executive director, told CL. “We are looking to grow those partnerships even more in 2024 during GMF weekend to have music throughout downtown. We are also excited this year about being in a venue where we can accommodate more stages, musicians, activations, food, and fans in a central location.” See Josh Bradley’s weekly roundup of new concerts below.—Ray Roa Happy Together Tour: The Turtles w/ Jay & The Americans/The Association/ Badfinger/The Vogues/The Cowsills Sunday, June 2. 7 p.m. $40 & up. Departures By Dan Savage

I am a 34-year-old gay man who immigrated to Canada from a Latin American country a few years ago. I immigrated with my husband of eight years. Throughout our relationship we had been monogamous, and we never questioned it. (Perhaps due to our Catholic religious backgrounds?) However, the sex was never great. Not even at the beginning. But he was kind, good looking, and caring. So, I fell for him. I was always clear at the beginning that I was versatile, and he said he was, too. But after a few weeks I assumed the bottom role, and I never felt like I could make any demands on him. In fact, I’ve never even asked a blowjob. (And I did not get one for seven years, even as I gave him plenty!) Also, we had sex once every two weeks or so, and only when he wanted to. Always in the dark, and always in the same position. I know I am at fault for not asking for what I needed. About a year ago, I got on Grindr without my husband knowing. I met a man and his husband. Their relationship was open, and they invited me over. After that one threesome, we decided to just be friends and we even hung out as couples with my husband, everyone pretending that nothing had happened. But I started to develop feelings for the person I originally connected with on Grindr. We continued to have mind-blowing sex, just the two of us now. Four months later, both our partners discovered our affair. The other couple decided to divorce, but my husband and I decided to work through it. But the affair continued and my feelings for this other person only continued to grow. My husband is not willing to be more sexual, he is not willing to allow me to top him, he will not go down on me, and he refuses to let me have sex elsewhere. I have been patient and mindful of his needs and struggles, but he gets annoyed each time I talk about this or ask him to read a book about open relationships. He accuses me of only caring for myself and the things that I want. He has agreed to talk to a therapist about the possibility of being open, but I don’t know how much longer I should wait. On the other hand, the person with whom I am still having an affair wants me to live with him. Sometimes I want that, sometimes I don’t. He has a young child, and I had never thought about being any sort of parent. Should I stay in my marriage and be patient with my husband since sex is the only thing that does not work between us? Or should I simply go be with this new person?—Staying Over Straying

that you still describe it as an affair suggests your husband doesn’t know. You need to tell him. I get it: you don’t want to be the bad guy. You got caught having an affair and giving your marriage a chance—or pretending to—is what a good (but not perfect) person does after they get caught having an affair, SOS, if that’s what their spouse wants. I mean, you owe your husband that much, right? So, now you’re going through the motions— having those difficult conversations, pushing the right books at him, searching for a non-trad couple’s counselor—but unless you sincerely want to remain in this marriage, SOS, you’re wasting your husband’s time. And based on your actions over the last year, I really don’t think you wanna stay in this marriage. To recap: You cheated on your husband with a married couple and then encouraged your husband to socialize with that couple and then started fucking one of those guys behind his husband’s back and yours. That kind of doublebarreled betrayal isn’t something a marriage typically survives—your affair partner’s open marriage didn’t survive a lesser betrayal—and the fact that you’re still slamming your dick down on the self-destruct button, i.e., fucking this other guy, is evidence that what you want is out. Because you already got caught once, SOS, and you’re going to get caught again, and then your husband is almost certain to leave you. But if you can sincerely say you could happily remain married if you were free to fuck and date other men—so, not just open, but poly—you need tell your husband that. But you’re issuing an ultimatum, SOS, you’re not entering into negotiations. And if that’s unacceptable to your husband, well, then you’ll need to get a lawyer and your own place. If you’re still crazy about the guy you’re fucking a year from now and you’ve come to enjoy spending time with his kid, you could think about moving in with him then. If you’re still crazy about him a year from now and you don’t enjoy spending time with his kid, think about moving a little closer, e.g., moving into the same building or onto the same block. Sexual compatibility is crucially important in sexually exclusive relationships. The sex doesn’t work between you and your husband, it never has, and it’s unlikely it ever will. You could live with that for a while— you did live with it for a while—but you’re not willing to settle anymore. You’ve been doing the wrong thing for a while now, SOS, but it’s not too late to do the right thing: honestly ask for the divorce you clearly want, SOS, instead of manipulating your husband into giving it to you.

SAVAGE LOVE

Don’t drag this out. You’ve already opened your marriage, SOS, and you have no intention of closing it again. You’re still fucking the other man. While you don’t explicitly state that your husband is unaware the affair continues, the fact

Please help. I saw an old boyfriend today and based on our text communications about how much he wanted to be with me, I was expecting him to take me in his arms and kiss me. When he made no moves, when he didn’t so much as react to my flirty comments, I was devastated. I didn’t realize how devastated I was alone in my car. While I’m not usually big on the waterworks, I started weeping. I don’t think I was devastated about being rejected. I’m a big girl, I can handle that. But does weeping—more like wailing—indicate something that my heart knows/understands that my head hasn’t caught up to yet? Does this mean that I’m in love with him?—The Town Cryer It does not. You reconnected with an old flame, you swapped some flirty texts, mutual interest was established. And at some point between reestablishing mutual interest and scheduling that first face-to-face meeting in however many years, you allowed yourself to do what anyone in your position would (and what your ex probably did): you began to fantasize about what could be (or could be again), TTC, and you got your hopes up. What you wanted—what you were in love with— was what he represented: possibility. When an old flame comes back into our lives, it can feel like a miraculous shortcut; if you can pick up where you left off, the truly hard part—finding someone you like—is already done. In this instance, TTC, the shortcut didn’t work; you’ve changed, he’s changed. I’m not gonna sugarcoat it: you were rejected and that always hurts. But it was the want of

it that made you cry, not the him of it. You hoped it might find what you want with him—love and connection—but that wasn’t in the cards. So, go ahead and have a good cry, TTC, and then go find it with someone else. P.S. I once met up with an old flame—my first true love—hoping we might get back together. I went to Marshall Field’s that day fully expecting we would wind up in the changing room, tearing each

other’s clothes off like we used to. But whatever we had was gone. We had a nice lunch, but lunch was all it was. The feeling—or the lack of feeling— was mutual, I think, and neither of us wound up weeping on the subway on the way home. But the realization that what seemed possible an hour earlier was impossible left me feeling incredibly sad. So, I feel you, TTC, and my heart goes out to you. I’m in love with someone I shouldn’t be. He’s married. He claims to love me. We haven’t done anything besides talk. While I’m not among the most traditional sorts of people, I have a hard time getting past the fact that he is married. I can rationalize it. We knew each other and we loved each other before he met her. He only married her because he thought I was unavailable. Their union is an unhappy one. But the fact remains that he hasn’t asked her to open the marriage. I don’t get anywhere when I suggest he does that. He claims he wants to divorce, or separate, but he doesn’t make any movement in that direction. They don’t have sex anymore, he says. They don’t sleep in the same bed anymore, he says. They don’t celebrate holidays together anymore, he says. If all that is true, I don’t understand why they stay together. I don’t know if I should wait, which could be a long time, or give up. If it were just about sex, the answer would be easy. But he’s become an important part of my life, despite it just being only talk—and not sex talk, we talk about everything going on in our lives. What would you do?—This Emotional Affair I’d fuck the guy. But if I shared your qualms—if the guy was married and unwilling to ask for an open relationship and I didn’t know if anything he was telling me was true—here’s what I would do: I would tell this guy to give me a call when he’s single. And as much as I might pine, I wouldn’t wait. I’d get out there and date/fuck other people—single and looking, partnered and ENM—in the hopes of putting as much emotional, social, and sexual distance between me and this marriedand-unavailable guy as I possibly could. That’s not giving up, TEA, that’s moving on. If I heard from him after his divorce and I was still single, we could resume talking and possibly start fucking. If I was with someone else when I heard from him after his divorce and I was happy with that other person, I would tell him he missed his window—again—and, given the intensity of our connection, I would tell him being friends was out of the question. And finally, TEA, if I was with someone else when he reached out after his divorce and I was unhappy, I would do what I wanted him to do back when he was married and unhappy: open or end the relationship I was in so I could be with him too or with him instead.
