Orange County is getting a new animal shelter, county funding for the Pulse memorial gets a final OK, Florida cops can’t search cars just because they smell weed, and other news you may have missed last week.

» Orange County announced plans to build Florida’s largest animal shelter Orange County Animal Services is bringing a new shelter to Orlando, and it’s set to be the largest in Florida, according to the county. The Board of County Commissioners last week approved a $49 million contract for the Collage Companies to build a 123,419-square-foot Orange County Animal Services location in Orlando. It’s set to open by summer 2027 on the plot of land shared by the existing OCAS facility and Orange County Mosquito Control (which is being relocated). The two-story shelter will have the capacity to house about 265 dogs on the first floor and 200 cats on the second floor. The design phase began in March 2022, with Bacon Group Inc. and the Orange County Animal Services staff collaborating to discuss ideal layouts and touring shelters across the state to study best practices. The final design aims to incorporate the Fear Free Shelters concept, which reduces stress in shelter animals and aims to mitigate the spread of diseases.

» Orange County commissioners approved $5M funding agreement for Pulse memorial

Orange County commissioners last week also gave the final OK to a $5 million funding agreement with the city of Orlando to build a permanent memorial commemorating the Pulse nightclub shooting. The memorial project, slated for completion in 2027, was taken over by the city after a failed effort by the OnePulse Foundation, a nonprofit that dissolved in disgrace in 2023 amid financial mismanagement, after raising millions of dollars for a memorial they never broke ground on. The city expects their memorial concept to cost approximately $12 million. The city requested $5 million from Orange County and plans to fund the rest through the general fund and fundraising efforts. Under the new agreement with the county, Orange County will pay the $5 million over three years in three installments, beginning with an initial $1.6 million payment on Nov. 1. That’s a drop in the bucket for the county’s total budget this fiscal year of $8.2 billion.

» Florida got $608M grant for immigration detention centers

Florida officials received a hefty lump sum of cash from the federal government last week to cover the cost of the Everglades immigration detention center dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz.” As reported first by WPLG, the Department of Homeland Security revealed two days after the fact that Florida had been awarded the full $608.4 million stockpile of funds within the Detention Support Grant Program, a new program organized under the Federal Emergency Management Agency designed to compensate states for detaining undocumented immigrants. Florida was the only applicant for the grant program, FEMA told the Florida Phoenix last month. That money will foot the construction, housing, feeding and equipment costs spent on the Everglades center — on which the state has already spent at least $245 million — and the “Deportation Depot” facility in Baker County. Gov. Ron DeSantis also announced in August that Florida may build a “Panhandle Pokey” detention center in northwest Florida, which the grant would also cover. Although the governor had vowed for months that the federal government, not state taxpayers, would pay the bill, neither he nor his office could confirm as of last week whether the state had been reimbursed.

» Court ruled Florida police can’t search cars just because they smell weed Pointing to laws allowing use of medical marijuana and hemp, a state appeals court last Wednesday reversed course and said police officers can’t search vehicles only on the basis of smelling cannabis. The 2nd District Court of Appeal’s main opinion said that for “generations, cannabis was illegal in all forms — thereby rendering its distinct odor immediately indicative of criminal activity.” But the opinion said legislative changes have “fundamentally changed its definition and regulation” and made cannabis legal to possess in multiple forms. Citing the U.S. Constitution’s Fourth Amendment protections against unreasonable searches and seizures, the appeals court backed away from what it described as a “plain smell doctrine” related to cannabis. The Hillsborough County case stemmed from law-enforcement officers in 2023 stopping a car in which Darrielle Ortiz Williams was a passenger. Officers smelled cannabis and searched the car, finding bags that included cannabis. Williams, who was on probation at the time, also was found to have a drug known as “molly” in a plastic bag in a sock. A circuit judge found that Williams had violated probation. That led to the

appeal, which was considered by the full appellate court. Last week’s opinion reversed course from a 2021 decision by the 2nd District that said police were still able to conduct searches based on smelling cannabis.

» New Florida laws on abandoned animals, drones, porn and more went into effect

More than 20 new state laws took effect Oct. 1, ranging from increased criminal penalties for restraining and abandoning animals during natural disasters to a ban on the sale and use of license plate flippers. One, filed by Republican Sen. Don Gaetz, dubbed “Trooper’s Law” (SB 150) makes it a third-degree felony to restrain and abandon an animal during a natural disaster. Another new law (SB 168) requires the state’s Northwest Regional Data Center to develop a behavioral health care data repository to create, collect and analyze existing statewide data related to behavioral health care in the state. The results are intended to clarify the scope of and trends in behavioral health services, spending and outcomes, plus the relationship between behavioral health, criminal justice and incarceration. Under SB 948, Florida landlords are also now required to give tenants and prospective tenants information regarding flood risks and past flooding of their rental properties. And HB 757 makes it a third-degree felony to solicit child pornography and makes possession of a lewd or lascivious image with intent to promote the image a second-degree felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison, 15 years of probation and a $10,000 fine.

Thousands of Central Floridians are doomed to work without pay as government shutdown drags on

Tens of thousands of federal employees in Florida are either working without pay or have been furloughed as the federal government shutdown that began Oct. 1 continues, sparking affordability concerns from advocates.

According to the Florida AFL-CIO, the state’s largest federation of labor unions, there are nearly 100,000 federal employees in Florida who aren’t getting a paycheck during the shutdown, including Floridians employed by the Department of Veterans Affairs, TSA officers at Florida airports, and thousands of civilian employees in the U.S. military, among other agencies. An additional 750,000 federal employees across the country, meanwhile, have been furloughed — or essentially locked out of their job.

“Once again, we are told our work is ‘essential,’ but our livelihoods are treated as expendable,” said Candise Isla, a TSA officer and member of the American Federal of Government Employees union who’s worked at Orlando International Airport for more than a decade. Isla, a member of AFGE Local 556, said she’s worked at MCO through four government shutdowns since 2013, and admits, “each one takes a heavier toll on officers like me and our families.”

“During a shutdown, TSA officers are required to keep reporting for duty. We keep checkpoints running, screen bags, and ensure flights are safe, all while paychecks are withheld,” she explained. Although federal government workers are entitled by law to backpay once a funding agreement is reached, in the meantime, those who are

they’re having to rely on aid organizations — which I think is a tragedy for our all volunteer forces in the greatest and most capable military in the world,” Villand shared in a virtual press conference Monday, organized by the Florida Democratic Party. “This is just a shame.”

The federal government shutdown has largely resulted from disagreement between Republicans and Democrats in U.S. Congress over funding for healthcare programs.

This includes federal subsidies that help offset the cost of insurance premiums for a significant number of Americans — including an estimated 2 million or so Floridians — who buy health insurance through the Affordable Care Act marketplace.

Those enhanced health insurance tax credits, first made available through the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 under the Biden administration, are set to expire by the end of 2025 unless Congress extends them. If the subsidies do expire, health policy advocates warn that insurance premiums for those who previously qualified for them could see their monthly premiums more than double — potentially costing low- and moderate-income earners hundreds or even thousands of dollars more per year.

“The fact that the Republicans are playing games with the healthcare of tens of millions of Americans shows what their priorities are,” said Florida Democratic Party chair Nikki Fried, who joined the press call Monday.

Again” supporters polled. A greater share of adults polled said President Donald Trump or Republicans (39 percent and 37 percent, respectively) would deserve the blame for the failure of Congress to extend the subsidies, compared to 22 percent of adults who said Democrats deserve the blame.

U.S. Congressman Maxwell Frost, representing Orlando, told Politico his office estimates roughly 200,000 people in his district alone will pay more for health insurance coverage unless Congress intervenes to extend the subsidies.

Meanwhile, federal workers — 80 percent of whom live and work outside of Washington, D.C. — are facing a broader threat of mass firings if the shutdown continues. While furloughing employees during a shutdown is typical, permanent firings are not.

furloughed or are instructed to continue work as usual are left unpaid.

“The truth is, missing even a single paycheck is devastating. Many TSA officers live paycheck to paycheck,” Isla pointed out. “Rent, childcare, and grocery bills don’t pause just because Congress can’t agree. After a while, some officers will struggle to afford gas to get to the airport, while others will start relying on food banks or second jobs just to get by.”

Rachel Villand, who serves as co-chair of the Veterans and Military Family Council of the Democratic National Committee, said she’s concerned that with the U.S. House in recess until next week, “it is very likely that military

Although some Republicans and Democrats in Congress have pushed for a short-term deal to end the shutdown, and return to renegotiate at a later date, Fried is skeptical of the idea.“We can’t trust that come December, they’re going to come back to the table,” she said. “We’ve got to take an opportunity to renegotiate the situation.”

Most Democrats in the U.S. Senate have rejected efforts to reach a short-term deal, according to CNN, as they work to force Republicans — who currently have majority control over both the House and Senate — to agree to extend the ACA health insurance subsidies. House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican, meanwhile sent House members home this week, arguing Monday, “There’s nothing for us to negotiate” and “the ball is in the court of the Senate Democrats.”

‘Once again, we are told our work is essential, but our livelihoods are treated as expendable,’ says a TSA officer who works at Orlando International Airport

members will not receive their mid-month pay, which is critical.”

“Friends of mine, as well as contacts I have, [say] there’s a mad scramble to figure out what to do, how they’re going to get money, and so

Recent national polling found that 78 percent of the public say they want Congress to extend the ACA tax credits ahead of their expiration, including 59 percent of Republicans and 57 of self-identified “Make America Great

“We now have the White House saying they’re going to do mass firings — they’re not going to honor the law, they’re not going to honor [union] contracts,” Florida AFL-CIO political director Rich Templin told Orlando Weekly. “So this is a lot more uncertain for folks than it’s ever been,” he added, when asked to compare this shutdown to previous ones. “We’ve never had a White House just say, I’m going to break the law.” Labor unions representing government employees, including the AFGE and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, have filed a lawsuit over the Trump administration’s threats to fire federal workers, and filed a temporary restraining order over the weekend.

“We’re facing a health care crisis with millions of Americans about to see their health insurance payments skyrocket, and instead of working across the aisle to solve it, the administration is threatening to use its orchestrated shutdown as an excuse to fire federal workers who perform critical services that Americans rely on,” said AFSCME president Lee Saunders in a statement.

“The threatened mass firings are unlawful. Public service work is vital to our communities, and we will do everything in our power to defend it.”

According to Axios, the Social Security administration has already lost 20 percent of its staff in 2025 since the Trump administration took over. Even before that, in 2023, Social Security was already at its lowest staffing level in 25 years, according to the AFGE, despite steady increases in the number of people relying on Social Security benefits.

Under Trump — who has explicitly admitted aims to target “Democrat agencies” — at least 150,000 federal workers have already left the federal government voluntarily, amid low morale and uncertain job security, choosing to accept an earlier buyout offer from the Trump administration. That’s in addition to job cuts advanced by the Trump administration’s “Department of Government Efficiency,” an initiative initially led by tech billionaire Elon Musk.

The New York Times estimates that one in eight federal workers — equal to approximately 300,000 employees — will have left the government by the end of December.

Witch-obsessed comedian Tim Murray is bringing his costumes, camp and cackles to Orlando one last time

Comedian, actor and writer Tim Murray, famed for his sharp-witted TikToks and stage work that blends Broadway flair with queer culture, is on his way to Orlando. Murray is bringing his solo show Witches! , a

dazzling mix of stand-up, music and drag, to the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts to mark the spooky season with a comedic Halloween cabaret.

“It is exciting and I am pumped to do it again,”

Murray tells Orlando Weekly. “But, I want this to be the last time because I really want to write a new show. It is a big production and a lot of work with costumes, makeup, wigs, props and prep for the show.”

TIM MURRAY IS WITCHES!

8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8

Alexis and Jim Pugh Theater, Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts 445 S. Magnolia Ave. drphillipscenter.org

$47

In just over an hour, Murray blends storytelling, musical comedy, improv, drag and crowd work, seamlessly combining all of his passions, topped off with a perfectly pointy hat. He belts out parody songs and riffs with audience members about their personal favorite witches all while dressed in his Wicked Witch of the West best.

First staged in 2022 as a one-off Halloween show, Witches! quickly grew into a phenomenon. Murray toured the show across multiple U.S. cities before taking it to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where he refined it for international audiences.

“I want people to experience the feeling of celebration with their friends and to grow up and feel proud of being queer,” Murray says. “Going to Fire Island, trying on wigs, playing dumb games — it’s about the joy of finding your people.”

On his journey with Witches!, Murray has created a coven of fans. One fan gave him a VHS copy of The Worst Witch after he joked about not knowing the film during a set. An Orlando local named Patty was so moved by the show’s message of finding your coven that she had Murray’s face tattooed on her arm.

“I want people to feel frivolity and joy, especially in this current time we’re living in,” Murray says. “I just want people to be able to turn their brains off for an hour and laugh and leave feeling refreshed and like they can party for a little bit.”

For Murray, the project is personal. He grew up obsessed with witches, from Bewitched and Sabrina the Teenage Witch to Buffy’s Willow and Hocus Pocus. As a queer performer, those spellcasters embodied power, transformation and community. That throughline becomes the show’s message, urging audiences to “find your coven.”

“I have always felt like I loved being creative, but I had a hard time finding my path,” Murray says. “So, this show felt like a way to get 10,000 hours doing all my favorite things in one show.”

This fall, Murray will finally capture Witches! on film for an upcoming comedy special as a final document. Beyond that, he has his eyes on new creative horizons, including writing Broadway musicals and plays. He’s also set to perform in the 10th anniversary of I Put a Spell on You, a star-studded Halloween concert event in New York.

But for now, he’s savoring the chance to share his witchy world live with audiences one last time.

“I’ve wanted to bring this show to Orlando for a long time,” Murray says. “The fact that it’s finally happening on this last tour is thrilling. I just love that city, I always have a great time there.”

Among the many events associated with the 50th birthday of the Rocky Horror Picture Show is the unauthorized documentary Sane Inside Insanity, streaming Oct. 17

Ever since the Disney–Fox merger, I consider Dr. Frank N. Furter — Tim Curry’s iconic Sweet Transvestite from the Rocky Horror Picture Show — to be an official Disney princess (fight me), so it’s only appropriate that Orlando is celebrating the film’s 50th anniversary like a royal jubilee. This Sunday, a screening at Dr. Phillips Center will feature stars Barry Bostwick, Nell Campbell and Patricia Quinn with the local Rich Weirdoes shadowcast (richweirdoes. com), whom I recently watched while bouncing around in my moving seat during Pointe Orlando’s bonkers 4DX screening. They’ll also be at the Plaza Live on Halloween, and a live Rocky Horror cabaret is coming to downtown’s Darkroom at The Dust on Oct. 26.

Among the many releases associated with the anniversary — including a restored 4K release of

the film and a book of Mick Rock photographs — is the unauthorized documentary Sane Inside Insanity (saneinsideinsanity.com), available on streaming and screening Oct. 17 at Fort Lauderdale’s OUTshine Film Festival (outshinefilm.com). Director Andreas Zerr spent nearly a decade researching Rocky Horror and pursuing elusive interviewees, so you’d expect him to be a superfan, but when I interviewed him via video from his home in Hamburg, Germany, the opposite turned out to be true.

“I’m not a Rocky Horror fan myself. I never was, and I doubt that I will ever be,” says Zerr, who first encountered RHPS on VHS as a teen. “I liked the music, but Rocky Horror per se did not actually appeal to me. It did not speak to me like it spoke to other people in the community especially, so I forgot about it for 30 years.” Then, 10 years ago, Zerr heard a Rocky Horror song on the radio and began wondering what happened to the people involved. “I started to investigate with the intention of more like a 30-40 minute feature, [but] the deeper we dug within the investigation we researched, the more interesting the story became.”

Zerr notes that modern mountings of the musical — such as the never-ending European tours and a limited run coming next spring to Broadway’s Studio 54 — have rewritten the original show to make it more like the movie, because “people going to the show after the film cult has evolved are expecting more to see the film live on stage than the original stage play.” His film documents these big-budget productions’ popularity with audiences, while also eulogizing the scrappy punk-rock lark buried beneath the bombast. “It’s much more business now, which might be a good thing for some, and might be a bad thing for others,” says Zerr, adding, “People who have seen the Stones in a 100-person bar in the ’60s would say the same thing about the Rolling Stones now playing Wembley Stadium.”

The other major thread in Sane Inside Insanity is the unique relationship between Rocky Horror and its interactive audience, which became a worldwide community. The soul of these segments is the late Sal Piro, founding president of the official Rocky Horror Picture Show Fan Club. “To see his emotions and what he feels for Rocky

TACOS & VIBES? SAY LESS.

our newest location: 888 City Walk Ln #1006.

Horror, even almost 50 years after seeing it the first time, that was very precious for us and also his sister,” says Zerr.

Piro, who passed away in 2023 shortly after recording his interviews, was “the bearer of the torch,” before passing the torch on to Larry Viezel, current club president. “People yelling stuff, throwing stuff, saying stuff back to the screen, was kind of amazing for me,” Viezel recalls of his first exposure to the movie at Cinema 35 in Paramus, New Jersey. “I had a great time, and I thought I’d never go back again … and it’s kind of been 33 years ever since.”

Although RHPS ’ influence can be felt in everything from 4D theme-park attractions to immersive art installations, “It’s impossible to create something like the phenomenon of Rocky Horror again, even if you try, because it’s lightning in the bottle, and you cannot create a cult,” says Zerr, attributing the fandom’s unique evolution to an era predating internet and cable TV. “I think real people being around you … and real people in front of the screen … are the missing ingredient which you cannot reproduce by advancing technology.”

Even more important for Zerr is the sometimes life-saving impact Rocky Horror left on the LGBTQ+ community that first embraced it. “It spoke to the people who saw it as first-generation fans, and it triggered something [during] a time when homosexuality was illegal in some states in the United States,” says Zerr. “We’re trying to highlight what it meant for the people in the ’70s and ’80s, for their sexuality, and what kind of safe haven Rocky Horror provided for them.”

That safe haven seems more necessary now than ever, so it’s ironic that Viezel likens Rocky Horror’s storyline — and the experience of its first-time viewers — to the Biblical story of Adam and Eve’s expulsion from Eden.

“That’s what keeps it going: It has become a rite of passage. You go into this movie an innocent virgin, as it were, and you come out somewhat corrupted by this film. And I think that that cycle repeats itself,” says Viezel. “I’ll never go back to that first time I saw it, which was amazing, but there are new and different kinds of amazing that this show is continuously showing me.”

The Cairo Express food truck rolls into Winter Park carrying Egypt’s contributions to world cuisine

Thirty years ago, when I found myself in Egypt, I was warned by many a Masreyeen to avoid street food at all costs for fear of developing what translated to “Cairo Cramp,” an affliction that made Delhi Belly seem like the Shanghai Squirts. Or something like that. But there was no way I was leaving the bustling megalopolis without sampling koshary, Egypt’s national dish. When similar protestations were uttered by the chap in the soda-jerk cap ladling out bowls heaping with a mix of black lentils, chickpeas, rice, macaroni and spaghetti in a tangy tomato sauce topped with fried onions and a liberal blob of shatta (hot pepper sauce), “Nonsense!” was my reply. “In fact, make it a double,” I said, and in a matter of seconds, the staccato beeps of car horns and cacophonous shouts of merchants, not to mention the dulcet voice of Amr Diab, were drowned out by the riot of flavors and textures in the bowl. This was organized chaos, much like Cairo’s traffic.

Thirty days ago, I found myself on the corner of Wymore and Lee roads in Winter Park, behind the Chevron gas station and next to Salon Ciséaux, spoon-deep in a bowl of koshary served from The Cairo Express, a food truck operation run by Gigi Elgharbawy and her children, Iman, Mustafa and Omar. Gigi, in fact, was a cook at Makani on International Drive,

the city’s only Egyptian restaurant, before a new ownership group took over and ran it into the ground. The restaurant permanently closed last summer. When I reviewed Makani in 2019, I noted the absence of chickpeas and fiery shatta in their koshary. But Gigi’s version ($10.99) took me back to that dusty Cairo street in 1995.

“No shortcuts here,” Gigi hollered through the window of the food truck.“Everything here is made from scratch.” And that includes the shatta, which Gigi makes from fried cayenne peppers, tomato sauce and salt. I used a fair bit of it (and a fair bit of tahini) on the grilled hawawshi ($11.99). The charred pita wedges may resemble quesadillas, but the stuffing of finely minced, seasoned ground beef lent a flavor more akin to samosas or empanadas.

Dipping a wedge into a rustic, chunky baba ghanouj ($7) with a deep charred flavor made every bite even better.

Stuffing also came in the form of rice seasoned with warm spices, parsley, dill, turmeric and tomatoes in the grape leaves ($6). The leaves themselves are plucked from Gigi’s garden before being wrapped around the aforementioned, cooked in chicken broth and liberally bathed with lemon. Then there’s mombar ($8.99), tomatoey rice stuffed into beef casings that are boiled and fried. The snap,

crackle and pop of these sausages made it an instant fave. Chicken and beef shavings of shawarma ($12.99) served over fragrant yellow rice with all the fixings — pickled cucumbers, pickled turnips, toum (garlic sauce) and tahini — came close to matching the superb platter served at Maroush. It’s arguably the most popular dish here, thanks in part to its familiarity. The shawarma may not be shaved off a spit, but that doesn’t take away from Gigi’s deft execution of this Middle Eastern staple. (She pan-fries the marinated shreds.)

Specials are always on offer and on this rainy day, molokhia ($16.99) — an earthy, herbaceous stew fashioned from the leafy greens of the corchorus olitorius (jute shrub), flavored with chicken broth, scented with bay leaves, anointed with garlic oil and lushed with butter, was every bit the superlative slurp Gigi said it was. It was served with grilled chicken and rice, both of which were largely shunned in favor of just slurping the green potable.

And while I appreciated a $3 piece of baklava at meal’s conclusion, I appreciated that the prices here were commensurate with street-food fare even more. The Cairo Express is a treasure, and those in search of a jewel of the Nile should find it buried deep within the recesses of Winter Park. fkara@orlandoweekly.com

Canine heartworm disease. Caused by parasitic worms transmitted through mosquito bites, heartworm disease affects the heart, lungs, and blood vessels of infected dogs. Early stages may show few symptoms, but as the disease progresses, pets can develop coughing, fatigue, weight loss, and even heart failure. Treatment involves a series of medications, including injections to kill adult heartworms and antibiotics to address secondary infections caused by dying parasites.

COUCHSURFING

Premieres Wednesday:

Caramelo — Brazil gets its own version of Marley & Me in the story of an ailing chef who teams up with a stray dog for a journey of self-discovery and spiritual renewal. The movie ends prematurely when they get stuck at the U.S. border because they can’t afford the entry fee of 250 bucks and a Greenie. (Netflix)

Is It Cake? Halloween — The Mikey Day-hosted bakeoff presents a special edition just in time for the spooky season. So in a sense, it’s a lot like The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula — except if that show had another name, it would be Is It Pie? (Netflix)

Néro the Assassin — Sixteenth-century France is the setting of an action/adventure series about a trained killer who reconnects with his daughter to protect her from his enemies. Day late and a dollar short, Néro. You were pretty damn scarce when all she wanted was a Labubu. (Netflix)

Premieres Thursday:

Boots — Remember when it was illegal for military servicepeople to be gay? If you don’t, just wait a few months! In the meantime, you can revisit the days of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” via this eight-episode dramedy starring a bunch of closeted Marines of the 1990s. Listen, the minute John Winger and Russell Ziskey said they were willing to learn, that horse had pretty much left the barn. (Netflix)

Oʻahu Shores — Hawaii is the setting for the latest reality series about the lives and loves of pretty young people whose existence is far more exciting than your own. What makes the show stand out is how committed this bunch remains to venerable Polynesian traditions. Like podcasting. (Peacock)

The Resurrected — Two Chinese mothers capture and torture their daughters’ kidnapper in a tale that examines the emotional limitations of revenge. Say what you want about revenge, but it’s still the best way to get even. (Netflix)

My Father, the BTK Killer — Sit down for a moving one-on-one with Kerri Rawson, who had to deal with the revelation that her father was the elusive murderer who had been terrorizing Wichita for decades. Then again, a loose copy of Frog and Toad Together could terrorize Wichita for decades. (Netflix)

Old Money — Business rivalry leads to love for a nouveau riche entrepreneur and a diplomat whose wealth runs several generations deep. You can tell the movie is Turkish, because over here, we don’t let the bluebloods hobnob with the arrivistes. (Netflix)

Swim to Me — When a woman from rural Chile takes a job as the maid to a well-off city family, the close bond she develops with their 6-yearold opens the door to all kinds of trouble. Boy, Netflix is really preoccupied with class-mixing this week for some reason. Brace yourself for an anime version of Das Kapital with voices by Babymetal. (Netflix)

Vgly Season 2 — Settle in for the further adventures of a Mexican rapper who’s trying to break into the music business without the benefit of money or connections. The key will be if a major label figures out a way to soak him for 85 percent of nothing. (HBO Max)

Victoria Beckham — Check in with the international celebrity and style icon in the run-up to Paris Fashion Week, as she recounts her fascinating life story in a three-part authorized documentary. Meanwhile, Sporty is over on The MotorTrend Channel, explaining how to do an engine rebuild on a ’67 GTO. (Netflix)

Premieres Friday:

Knife Edge: Chasing Michelin Stars — Go undercover with the culinary spies who determine what kind of Michelin rating a restaurant receives. Meanwhile, Shudder is developing a show about the secret shoppers who snitch on Hot Topic managers for putting out the One Piece merch a day early. (Apple TV+)

Kurukshetra — Ancient Indian mythology is the basis for an animated series that dramatizes an 18-day war of succession that split a prominent family in two. Spoiler: Nobody wins, and the dynasty gets sold to a Swedish tech company. (Netflix)

The Last Frontier — A U.S. Marshal is sent scrambling to protect his Alaska town after an air crash frees a planeload of dangerous criminals. But think what it would do for tourism if word got out you stood a solid chance of running into John Malkovich at the general store. (Apple TV+)

The Woman in Cabin 10 — Keira Knightley plays a journalist who can’t get anyone to believe she saw a passenger thrown from a cruise ship. Hey, she still hasn’t convinced me she’s actually British. Because what is that accent supposed to be, anyway? (Netflix)

Premieres Monday:

Solar Opposites — In their sixth and final season, our cast of visiting aliens lose their renewable wealth and have to live under the same budgetary strictures as the rest of us. Hey guys: You voted for this! (Hulu)

Premieres Tuesday:

Everybody Loves Me When I’m Dead — When a couple of Thai fraudsters funnel 30 million baht from a dead woman’s bank account, they run afoul of some more experienced criminals who think the money should be theirs. Now tell me, which dog in this fight is mine again? (Text me the answer, because I’m donating plasma right now.) (Netflix)

Guts + Glory — This reality competition that has contestants confronting their most debilitating fears was postponed at the last minute from its intended drop date in early September. Fortunately, there’s been a whole lot more since then for all of us to be petrified by. (Shudder and AMC+)

Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Deathwatch — Liev Schreiber headlines the voice cast of an animated show that’s based on a series of counterterrorism-themed video games. Fun fact: Though they carry his name, the games were produced with little to no involvement from Clancy. And the tie-in novels that have been published weren’t written by him, either. But I still believe his success was due to his firm and unshakable work ethic, because that’s what my AI told me. (Netflix)

FALL CONCERT GUIDE

Jon Batiste celebrates the Dr. Phil, EDC and Warped Tour take over downtown, and all the (pumpkin) spicy gigs this season

Temperatures are plummeting to a bone-chilling 85 degrees, spooky ephemera crowds the big-box and dollar store shelves, and concert calendars go into overdrive … fall is well and truly here. And with that purely theoretical season change in the South comes a bounty of live music all over the City Beautiful in venues large and small. Whether you’re a fan of hip-hop, blues, punk, pop (be it dream or otherwise), metal, soul or country — or all of the above — we’ve got a few gigs for you. Grab your flannel and some earplugs and get to the gig.

STATE OF THE UNION

Jon Batiste brings his musical mission of healing to the Dr. Phillips Center’s anniversary

The Dr. Phillips Center turns 10 this year and the ongoing celebrations of a decade of arts excellence cap off with a gift to us: a command performance from Grammy- and Oscar-winning musician Jon Batiste.

Multi-instrumentalist Batiste — known to your parents as the former bandleader and musical tone-setter for Stephen Colbert’s late show — brings his Big Money Tour to Orlando for a night of jazz, soul, rock and all points in between. It’s a show about finding hope and joy and healing in dark times through music and dancing and coming together.

The tour is named after the artist’s recent record of the same name, a headfirst dive into the heady history of American song and sound in all forms, with guests like Randy Newman and Lana Del Rey lending a hand.

Check Batiste bashing out these raucous and righteous songs live while you can — he’s already moved on with a new chart-topping album of solo piano Beethoven pieces.

“It’s open for everybody to experience a powerful wave of joy and community,” Batiste says. This should be a gig for the books. And there’s a gala celebration for the venue after Batiste tears the house down. Now that’s an encore.

Let me ask you about the vocation of being a musician. The form of this vocation is changing, you’ve said recently. You’ve kind of talked about how you’re not sure how much longer you’ll be a musician in that traditional sense.

Well, I think about it from the perspective of how I can be the most in service to humanity and to my community and ultimately, how I can continue to prioritize my family and my faith and my artistry in the best way, so that they can not be about uplifting me in my ego and my celebrity, but more about being of service.

I think that the industry is a real challenge because of how things have become and how there’s this premium on artists being fit into a mold that doesn’t fit. Artists have become more and more claustrophobic, and I think that’s why things are shifting. You’re hearing a lot of artists, and me personally, thinking about, how do we get out of the system as it’s set up for us, and build something that really can reach and touch the people who need it the most, and the people who care the most, and the people who we are most

happy to serve. How do we build community with them that doesn’t have to go through the setup as it is now?

I think that that’s becoming more authentic. The more troubles we’re facing, the more people are going inward and feeling like they want to be as direct and as personal. And that may mean smaller, that may mean being in community with less people but it’s a deeper connection, or it could mean thinking about music and albums and touring in a completely different way. I’m sure that those discoveries will take different shapes based on different artists in their communities, but I think that over time, that’s going to create a better industry and a better sense of community overall.

Thinking back to what you were saying about servicing humanity around you, how much do you see and think about other Jon Batistes, if you will, with the talent who won’t have the same opportunities or luck maybe to realize your gifts? How in control do you feel of being able to find those folks and cultivate opportunities for them?

I think it’s a beautiful thing to have a platform to share with other people, because you can ensure that more people have the opportunity. So that’s really what I love to do with the gifts that I’ve been given and the time that I’ve put in to build a team and a platform to reach folks. It’s to use it to get other people to be able to express their gift, and to help people to see something within themselves that maybe you see what they don’t even see, and then, once they get an opportunity, it just changes their life journey. And I’ve seen that happen over the years, from the time that I started just a teenager to now. Being able to look back over 20 years of being a band leader, and musician, and artist, and a teacher and educator — to see that I’m able to impact lives in that way — just shows that the power is in going back and looking at those who are in the position that you once were, and figuring out a way, whether it’s through a good word or opportunity or even a collaboration, to empower them.

This is a tour that is healing, liberating. Is there anything else you really want Florida to understand about the tour that you’re bringing to the state that you haven’t said already? It’s a family event. It’s a family gathering. It’s a beautiful thing to see when we perform. It’s so

many different people from their family coming to shows. You’ll see generations, three and four generations of folks represented. Having the impact on generations like that — it’s open for everybody to experience a powerful wave of joy and community. It’s really a privilege to be able to go around the country and share that and give people something that is so powerful through the music and through the togetherness. It’s really what I want to share with everybody who’s out there in the community. So please, join us, and don’t be afraid to bring anybody who is in your community.

FALL FORWARD

Days are shorter and nights are longer … perfect for this selection of essential autumn shows

Friday, Oct. 10

Paul Oakenfold & Crystal Method

In the dance music world, there are few bigger stars than Brit crossover dance-music icon Paul Oakenfold. His influence across genres is vast, he’s your favorite Britpop band’s fave DJ and his ability to move a dancefloor is uncanny. He’s got a lot of history here in Orlando; from the start in the 1990s he was aware of, and thick as thieves with, a lot of Central Florida rave legends. In his first show in Orlando since the pandemic year 2020, Oakenfold headlines Hard Rock Live with the equally seminal Crystal Method in tow. Oasis reunion didn’t come here? No problem, we got Oakenfold. 8 p.m., Hard Rock Live, 6050 Universal Blvd., entertainment.hardrock. com, $35-$131.

Saturday, Oct. 11

Heart & Soul Music Festival

Heart & Soul Music Festival returns to Apopka for a fifth year this fall, featuring performances from the likes of Dru Hill and Prince sideman Morris Day. The fest, hosted by local radio station Star 94.5, features an afternoon of R&B worthies across generations, including the SOS Band, Chante Moore and Carl Thomas, all in a gorgeous outdoor setting. 2:30 p.m., Apopka Amphitheater, 3710 Jason Dwelley Parkway, Apopka, apopka.gov, $70-$186.50.

Thursday, Oct. 16

Legendary Pink Dots

A definite prestige gig for the more dark- and psych-inclined music freaks. Anglo-Dutch musical collective Legendary Pink Dots have been fearlessly exploring the outer limits of sound and expression for nearly (gasp) 45 years now. Led by evergreen mainstay Edward Ka-Spel — think Syd Barrett if he had a predilection for Lord Byron and never burnt out — this is a band that merges goth with whimsy, and serious improv freakouts with gentle lovelorn hymns in a way no one else has, really. Watch these crazy diamonds shine on at Conduit. 7 p.m., Conduit, 6700 Aloma Ave., Winter Park, conduitfl.com, $26.91.

Sunday, Oct. 19

Phantogram

Chameleonic but icy-cool L.A. electro duo Phantogram are back on the road and returning to Orlando this fall, buoyed by bold new sounds. Case in point: new single “In My Head,” written in collaboration with Charli XCX ally Whethan. This is a band that can tour with the Deftones, casually drop Krautrock references and tease a collab with Big Boi, sunglasses still firmly in place. This gig will make you feel very modern. 7 p.m., House of Blues, Disney Springs, orlando.houseofblues.com, $49-$147.

Sunday, Oct. 19

Turnstile

The last time Turnstile touched down in Orlando, a sold-out House of Blues briefly became the sweatiest place in the city. We’re expecting no less passion or perspiration when the hardcore punk favorites return this fall, this time on an even bigger stage. The tour is in support of Never Enough, the band’s latest release since 2021’s widely well-received Glow On. The Never Enough tour launched in Nashville and finishes up in Orlando on Oct. 19 at the Orlando Amphitheater. It’s one of just two Florida shows, the other at Miami’s III Points Music Festival the day prior. Support for the Orlando show comes courtesy of Amyl & the Sniffers, Speed and Jane Remover. 6 p.m., Orlando Amphitheater, 4603 W. Colonial Drive, orlandoamphitheater.com, $109-$271.

Thursday, Oct. 23

AFI

Memes about frontperson Davey Havok’s rather comprehensive aesthetic transformation aside — they’ve been continuously

reinventing themselves for three decades now — AFI’s return to the road and Orlando is a big deal. This is a band with a devoted multigenerational fanbase, one that’s been patiently awaiting a return since their last bout of roadwork in 2021. The band have a freshly released new album, Silver Bleeds the Black Sun …, a bold and atmospheric work that combines anthemic alternative-rock with brooding punk shadows, but you’ll hear the hits too. TR/ST, an occasion in themselves, open. 8 p.m., Hard Rock Live, 6050 Universal Blvd., entertainment.hardrock.com, $40-$207.

Saturday, Oct. 25

Rico Nasty

Ferocious and future-forward hip-hop star Rico Nasty returns to Orlando — this time at the Beacham downtown — promising a lethal good time. Starting out as a teen trap-hop sensation, she’s now in her late 20s having the time of her life: playing Riot Fest, acting in an A24 series alongside Michelle Pfeiffer, and mixing

heavy guitars and hyper-pop winks into her sonic stew. Lethal might be her most expansive work yet, making her “rage-rap” downright cinematic. 7 p.m., The Beacham, 46 N. Orange Ave., foundation-presents.com, $27.50-$189.

Oct. 26-27

Jonas Brothers

The boys are back in town and ready to perform not one, but two nights at the Kia Center as part of their reunion “JONAS20 Greetings From Your Hometown” tour. This tour marks a huge milestone in their career, as after 20 years of various ups and downs, the brothers reconvened and released a new album, Greetings From Your Hometown. There will be familiar hits, new songs and even solo (bathroom break?) interludes from the three siblings. Fan demand led to another night being added, so the setlists will likely be even more expansive. Opening the show is The All-American Rejects, but past shows have revealed the brothers’ knack for bringing out nostalgic surprise guests as well. 7:30 p.m. Kia Center, 400 W. Church St., kiacenter.com, $94-464.

Friday, Nov. 7

Sasha Colby

Visiting royalty! Drag sensation Sasha Colby, winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 15 — the first person of Polynesian descent to win, and the second trans woman to win — and drag mother to pop star Chappell Roan, is coming to Orlando. Colby visits the City Beautiful on her solo headlining Stripped II tour, the sequel to her initial Stripped run in 2024. Expect new stories, new dance numbers and eye-popping looks. “This one’s about having fun, having some escapism, and magic. That’s so desperately needed in the world right now,” Colby said to the Los Angeles Blade. Agreed. 8 p.m., Hard Rock Live, 6050 Universal Blvd., entertainment.hardrock. com, $32-$73.

Nov. 7-9

Electric Daisy Carnival

Calling all “funkafied freaks,” the Electric Daisy Carnival is back, with five stages and more than 100 artists — including Zedd, Tiësto, Armin van Buuren and Green Velvet — ready for a phantasmagorical weekend. This is a festival that brings more than just cranked-up musical performances: a trippy Ferris wheel, interactive art installations, themed environments and an audience often more otherworldly than those onstage. So enjoy a night (or three) of neon lights and pyrotechnics during an EDM takeover of downtown. Tinker Field, 287 S. Tampa Ave, electricdaisycarnival. com, $286.24-598.54.

Saturday, Nov. 8

Lainey Wilson

Rising country star Lainey Wilson, just named to this year’s Time magazine Time100 Next list of future newsmakers, is ready to serenade Orlando. The young singer already has a Grammy under her belt for Bell Bottom Country, and the sky seems the limit for this bold and boisterous singer. Wilson winds down her lengthy Whirlwind World Tour, a going concern since the summer, with a final date here in Orlando in early November. So spirits, musical and otherwise, should be high. “She’s a legend already,” says Miranda Lambert. We believe her. 7 p.m., Kia Center, 400 W. Church St., kiacenter.com, $36.95-$146.45.

Nov. 15-16

Warped Tour

Orlando is one of just three cities set to host a back-from-thedead Vans Warped Tour this fall, as part of the skate-punk festival’s 30th anniversary swing. Performers at this pop-punk weekender include Simple Plan, Bowling for Soup, Pennywise, Less Than Jake, Thursday, Machine Gun Kelly, Angel Du$t, Yellowcard, Falling in Reverse and many (seriously) more. The tour comes in as a partnership with Insomniac, responsible for big-name music festivals like fellow Fall Concert Guide staple the Electric Daisy Carnival.

11 a.m., Camping World Stadium, 1 Citrus Bowl Place, campingworldstadium.com, $229.98-$449.98.

Friday-Saturday, Nov. 21-22

Men I Trust

Every time Canadian dream-pop outfit Men I Trust plays Orlando, the venues are a little bigger and the fans just that much more fervent. This time it’s a record two weekend nights at the House of Blues. All the better to dive deep into the trio’s two albums of new music this year: Equus Asinus and Equus Caballus. The band make ethereal and ambient indie with the poise and confidence of a Sade; no note is out of place in these carefully constructed songs. Live, the band adds a little bit more swing and grime to their immaculate arrangements — and no one is complaining. 7 p.m., House of Blues, Disney Springs, Lake Buena Vista, orlando.houseofblues.com/shows, $44-$108.

LOCAL RELEASES

The national ignominy, the fascist policies and the loud, proud-for-the-wrong-reasons dumbfuckery. These are barrel-bottom times in America in general and in Florida in particular. At best, it’s embarrassing. At worst, it’s willful oppression. For those who live here and have worked to put a lot into our communities, it’s an uncomfortable epiphany.

All it takes is a soul and a reasonable moral compass to sense it. If you want to know how actually threatening it really is, just ask someone nonbinary. That’s the sentiment behind the recent single by Paper Aviator, the solo vehicle for Orlando’s Kris Zaballero (they/them). “I Don’t Want to Leave” is an instrumental, but the title nutshells it.

“‘I Don’t Want to Leave’ is about the conflict I feel with my home state of Florida,” says Zaballero.“I’ve found an incredible community, I have so many friends here, I love the nature, the yummy food … but so many factors threaten my ability to exist here: our really horrible government, threats to LGBTQ+ rights, rampant development and destruction of the ecosystem, weather that seems to get worse every year, etc. etc. It’s probably smart to move out, but I’m hesitant to abandon it all.”

It’s a shitty conundrum. And the searching music on “I Don’t Want to Leave” embodies that emotional limbo. But as a digital fusion act, Paper Aviator doesn’t do traditional emo. Instead, that essence is translated to the digifu aesthetic. Rather than bummer guitars and sadboy wailing, this instrumental track is a pristine electronic soundscape of trilling keyboards, skittering glitches and VGM tones. The heart may be emo but the language is pure chiptune. If that particular combination sounds

‘I Don’t Want to Leave’ is about the conflict Paper Aviator feels with their home state of Florida. “So many factors threaten my ability to exist here: our really horrible government, threats to LGBTQ+ rights, rampant development and destruction of the ecosystem …”

hyper-specific, there’s an equally hyper-specific reason for that. “I Don’t Want to Leave” was Zaballero’s entry for Battle of the Bits, an online chiptune music competition. It competed in the “chipwest emo” battle, a category for chiptune interpretations of Midwest emo. Niche enough for you? At any rate, the song not only met those exacting parameters but also placed third. As narrow as the sonic inspiration is for “I Don’t Want to Leave,” its theme and emotions are very relatable, especially for those of us here in Orlando and other bubbles of sanity. It’s a lovely little song that’s a reminder of the light in our midst even in the middle of the storm. “I Don’t Want to Leave” and B-side “Just a Second” are both on Bandcamp and most other streaming

platforms. Paper Aviator and friends will be performing this weekend at the annual Halo Halo Music Fest spotlighting young local Filipinx artists (4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, Lil Indie’s, $20).

CONCERT PICKS THIS WEEK

Arcade Apocalypse release show: Hear ye, all rivetheads: On Nov. 7, Orlando EBM artist Arcade Apocalypse releases the new Virtual Façade EP. But locals get an exclusive advance at this SoDo release show, where he’ll do both a DJ set and live performance at monthly industrial/ goth gathering Dark Matter. As a proudly oldschool industrial act, Arcade Apocalypse uses real hardware synthesizers and drum machines in his music so the performance should be much more kinetic than your average electronic act. The EP will resonate with fans of early Front 242 and A Split Second, which is exactly why it’s coming out on a Belgian label (FenixFire Records). DJ Satur9 will also spin. (8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, Swirlery, no cover)

Bass Drum of Death: Although they were very much a product of the garage-punk boom of the 2000s, Mississippi-born band Bass Drum of Death were always more. They were more concentrated with more pure kick than Black Lips, Jay Reatard and nearly any of their other peers. But they were also more than just garage punk. In more recent releases, including their flame-throwing new album Six, they’ve become a heat-seeking missile packing a hot payload of rock fuzz, punk propulsion, bluesy swagger and bull’s-eye melodies. And now, their long-overdue Orlando appearance is finally here. (6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12, The Social, $23) baolehuu@rlandoweekly.com

“Things are dark, but I want to give people a reason to laugh instead of cry,” says comedian and television star Leslie Jones. You may know her from Saturday Night Live, the Ghostbusters reboot, her singular Olympics commentary, guest spots on The Daily Show, Supermarket Sweep v.2, or even her podcast “The Fckry” and now you can see her in person at the Plaza Live. Held at the “Mayor’s Tree”as part of the Art Pollination series, the show features words from Orlando’s outgoing Poet Laureate, Shawn Welcome; Orlando’s new Poet Laureate, Camara Gaither; Q Major, and Marquis Lee, plus music from Emily Johnson and Juan William Chávez. The afternoon ends with a conversation with Luca Molnar about her new mural in the Mennello’s garden, Worker Bees. And there’s ice cream — the very topical (and surely delicious) Art Pollination Ice Cream by Smile Ice Cream & Black Bee Honey. 11 a.m., Mennello Museum of American Art, 900 E. Rocky Horror Picture Show 50th Anniversary

Oh Rocky, has the Dr. Phil got a shadowcast for you. To mark a half-century of the seminal, genderfluid, glammy midnight monster musical, Rocky Horror Picture Show screens at our most lavish downtown venue. Probably no rice-throwing during this one — though there will be a prop bag handed to each attendee — but to make up for it, special guests from the 1975 film version will be in the castle: Barry “Brad” Bostwick, along with accidental gothic style icons Nell “Columbia” Campbell and Patricia “Magenta” Quinn. VIP meet-and-greets seem essential. 7:30 p.m., Walt Disney Theater, Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, 445 S. Magnolia Ave., drphillipscenter.org, $46-$300. — MM

We Wiggle Dolls: A DIY Puppet Cabaret (For Adults)

We Wiggle Dolls push the art form forward, both technically — techniques and construction — and, obviously, thematically, as a more grown-up endeavor. Featuring on the night will be Naughty Little No Good, Puppet Parts Productions, Yellowlemonshapedrock and Chaz Lord from Drippy Eye Projections. You should enter this with no expectations. We certainly are …. 7 p.m., Conduit, 6700 Aloma Ave., Winter Park, conduitfl.com, $19.90. — MM
