» Florida AG accused Monique Worrell of refusing to prosecute pedophiles
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier accused Democratic state Attorney Monique Worrell, whom he’s long feuded with, of declining to prosecute pedophiles. Uthmeier (a Republican, for the record) hosted an Orlando press conference to castigate Worrell, who serves Orange and Osceola counties. He claimed she failed to prosecute a man who allegedly masturbated in front of children and another man accused of possessing thousands of videos of child pornography. This was Uthmeier’s second press conference in a month targeting Worrell, whom Gov. Ron DeSantis removed from office in 2023 but who subsequently won reelection in 2024. Earlier this month, Uthmeier hinted that Worrell should be suspended (again) for bringing a second-degree murder case against a woman Uthmeier believes acted in self-defense. He recited the Florida Constitution’s ground for suspension of an elected official at a press conference, before asking her to investigate a former Democratic state senator accused of posting the location of ICE agents. Of note, the power to suspend and remove state attorneys lies solely with the governor. Worrell’s office did not respond to a request for comment on last week’s accusation by the AG.
» Winter Park Playhouse secured its permanent home on Orange Avenue After months of uncertainty, Winter Park Playhouse will remain in the space it has called home for more than two decades. After receiving grant funds from Orange County Tourism Development Tax, Winter Park formally purchased the theater’s space at 711 N. Orange Ave. last week. The nonprofit professional musical theater has called the spot home for the past 23 years, but the Playhouse’s future came into question in February 2023, when the building’s owners decided to sell the property. To preserve the nonprofit’s place in the community, the city of Winter Park partnered with the theater to apply for TDT funds, citing the $1.9 million economic impact and 30,000 guests it attracts each year. Winter Park was in turn allotted $8 million by Orange County last fall to purchase and renovate the space. Now that the permanent home is secured, TDT funding is being used to undertake major renovations to the building, including a 50 percent increase in seating capacity and other upgrades.
» Orlando City Council gave a greenlight to a bigger red light camera program Orlando city commissioners on Monday signaled approval for a plan to install 35 new red light cameras at city intersections by next summer in an effort to reduce dangerous crashes and improve roadway safety. The program issues fines to drivers (generally a $158 violation notice) who are caught running red lights, and is meant to deter repeat bad behavior. Currently, there are just a few dozen cameras set up at 25 intersections — representing just about 5 percent of the city’s total intersections. Now, the city wants to install 35 more cameras at intersections that pose a “heightened safety risk.” The program was first established in 2008, and is similar to programs in roughly three dozen additional Florida municipalities and in other states. Data on whether red light cameras actually improve safety by reducing crashes or fatalities, however, is mixed. Still, City Council praised the program as part of their Vision Zero plan to eliminate traffic deaths by 2040. The proposed expansion of the red light camera program is still subject to a second public hearing and vote by City Council to take place later this year. The city hopes for the new cameras to be set up by summer 2026, if approved.
» Florida said it would likely fall ‘in line’ with the feds’ unproven Tylenol-autism link
State Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo said last week that Florida isn’t ready to make recommendations on the use of acetaminophen (aka Tylenol) by pregnant women. But if one comes, Ladapo said it likely will follow a recent announcement from the White House that suggested a link between the common painkiller and autism. “We’re still looking at it,” he said, “but we would probably be very much in line with where the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) is.” President Donald Trump, joined by HHS Secretary RFK Jr. and federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services head Mehmet Oz (aka Dr. Oz), said the FDA would update drug labeling to discourage the use of
acetaminophen by pregnant women. At the same time, the FDA is set to enable the use of leucovorin, a form of vitamin B, as a treatment for autism. Tylenol manufacturer Kenvue disputed the claims of a link between Tylenol use and autism. “We believe independent, sound science clearly shows that taking acetaminophen does not cause autism,” Kenvue said in a statement.
» Florida AG sets up new tip line to report ‘violent extremism’
Education Commissioner Anastasios Kamoutsas announced last week that he had found probable cause that a Clay County teacher displayed “gross immorality” in posting about Charlie Kirk’s death, as Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier launched a tip line to report “violent extremism.” The teacher, left nameless by Kamoutsas, could lose her teaching license after she posted to social media, “This may not be the obituary. [sic] We were all hoping to wake up to, but this is a close second for me,” News 4 Jax reported. Kamoutsas said the post included an article about the assassination of Kirk, the founder of the conservative activist group Turning Point USA, which occurred at a college in Utah. On a broader scope, Uthmeier has apparently opened a “Combatting [sic] Violent Extremism Portal,”“where people will be able to report anything they observe or hear that is a call for violence or a threat for violence against other individuals,” he said. The portal allows people to submit screenshots, videos, or other evidence of threatened violence to Uthmeier’s office, anonymously if they want to. Uthmeier warned against abusing the portal. “We’re going to take everything seriously and, if you abuse this, if you provide something in a dishonest fashion to law enforcement, we’ll hold you accountable as well.”

Phantasmagoria celebrates the fanciful and frightful world of Edward Gorey
BY GABBY MACOGAY
How did you first learn your ABCs? Was it Sesame Street? An indulgent parent? Or was it a gruesomely giggly tale of children meeting their demise through meticulously illustrated storybook pages and one-sentence kisses of death? (“A is for Amy, who fell down the stairs/B is for Basil, assaulted by bears.”) If the latter, then local horror-theater troupe Phantasmagoria have a show for you as they dive deep into the works of prolific artist and storyteller Edward Gorey.
Phantasmagoria founder Byron (known in the light of day as John DiDonna, but firmly in character for our interview) discovered his lifelong love for Gorey’s works from a young age, and when it came time to craft the renowned local repertory’s 16th season, he believed Gorey’s stories would be the perfect fit for their fantastical world.
“I have a childhood love for Edward Gorey. I saw Dracula on Broadway [the 1977 production for which Gorey designed sets and costumes] when I was about 12 years old, and absolutely
fell in love with it,” Byron tells Orlando Weekly
“I still have the poster hanging on my wall. My aunt, every year, would bring books to me for the holidays, so I would have all these Edward Gorey books. I fell in love with him very early on. He writes in a style that’s very similar to the kind of style we play; he writes these sort of whimsically charming, hauntingly sinister penny dreadfuls.”
Phantasmagoria XVI: Hauntingly Whimsical Tales invites audiences into the “eerie yet whimsical worlds”of Edward Gorey, honoring the prolific artist and storyteller in celebration of what would have been his 100th birthday year.
Gorey is instantly recognizable for his distinctive pen-and-ink illustrations and accompanying short stories depicting creatively gruesome tales with a humorous, playful twist. Phantasmagoria’s one-act performance includes more than a dozen theatrical adaptations of Gorey’s tales, including “The Gilded Bat,” “The Wuggly Ump” and “The Gashlycrumb Tinies.”
“We’re finding with the whole show that we’re

also be seen as an homage to Gorey’s own love for choreography and ballet.
“My scripts usually are 7/8 dialogue and 1/8 movement notes. I would say this is the reverse, that I had to actually visualize it as I was writing it. I would sit there with his books, and I would look at how he pictured the image, and then I would say, ‘How did these characters get there?’,” he explains. “Everything we have done has been informed by his story, then more informed by his pictures, and then us having to devise together as a troupe what that world is.”
running that tightrope of balance between the whimsical and sometimes even slapstick, all the way to the sinister and dark and dreadful,” Byron says.
Phantasmagoria first began as a brainchild of Byron’s while teaching theater in Atlanta. After garnering enough inspiration and interested players, the troupe put on a single “horror circus”-inspired performance that debuted in front of an audience 16 years ago. Buoyed by (g)rave reviews, Phantasmagoria went on to become what it is today — a rapidly expanding, ever-changing theatrical phenomenon, weaving storytelling, dance, puppetry, visuals and movement together into an eccentrically haunting tapestry.
The Phantasmagoria players have skillfully reinterpreted a variety of horror icons over the years, including the works of Edgar Allen Poe and Charles Dickens’ holiday haunts. As the ensemble has expanded (with some members still present from the very first production!), the dynamics of the company have morphed to better encompass all of the unique talents and specialties now on display.
“The troupe itself has evolved with Phantasmagoria, and it concretely changes year after year. I think that’s why a lot of us are still involved, because it challenges us and amuses us and excites us to try something new every year,” says Byron.
Byron, also serving as Phantasmagoria’s scriptwriter, said that creating a theatrical work based on Gorey’s couplet-writing style provided a bit of a challenge, but one the troupe was thrilled to take on. Rather than focusing heavily on dialogue, the Gorey show is based on movement, which can
“It’s very exciting as a storyteller to be able to step into each author’s different world,” Carlotta, another Phantasmagoria mainstay, shares. “In Phantasmagoria, when you are one of the storytellers, you are living each of the stories. So not only are we narrating these tales, but we are becoming these people and these characters that are in these stories. I’m a very physical actor, I like to use physicalization to internalize emotion. So this show, with all the movement, is awesome for me.”
Byron highlights some unique aspects of the Gorey tribute that audiences may want to keep an eye (or ear) open for, including the original compositions of Phantasmagoria composer Josh Solomon as well as the intricately designed works of the troupe’s costume and puppet designers.
“Our puppet designer showed up with the Wuggly Ump and we were all in amazement,” Byron says.“The thing is going to be about 10 to 12 feet high, and it’s got this twitching tail and these wonderful claws to grab the children. We saw it and we were dancing with joy.”
The idea to create a theatrical tribute to Gorey was one that Byron was originally unsure that they could get off the ground. The collaboration began with a single cold call and email to the Edward Gorey Charitable Trust, which responded with great interest to the idea of sharing the illustrator’s stories in a new way.
“A love of the stories, that was our first mission, and it will always remain our mission. We like to say that in our mythology,”Byron explains.“When no one wants stories anymore, Phantasmagoria, as these entities, will cease to exist. Supposedly, we’ve been telling stories for 2000 years. We are immortals who are conjured up when the stories need to be told.”
“He [Gorey] was never there to terrify people,” he adds.“He was never there to go,‘Oh my god, life is gruesome.’ He was there to say,‘This is all part of life. Let’s look at it in a unique way.’” arts@orlandoweekly.com

Producer-director
Kyona Levine Farmer, who’s presenting Next to Normal at the Dr. Phil this weekend, is always looking for a ‘message of redemption’
During this first weekend of October, downtown’s Dr. Phillips Center will echo with the anguished cries of a mourning mother driven into a sanitarium by specters of sorrow. But these haunted house horrors aren’t Gothic fantasies from an earlier era; rather, they’re relatable modern-day struggles faced by the fractured Goodman family in Next to Normal, the Tony-winning 2008 rock musical by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey. Kyona Levine Farmer, a local director and founder of SparKyL Entertainment (sparkylentertainment.com), recently spoke with me about her latest production upon one of Orlando’s most prestigious stages, and the coast-to-coast journey that brought her there.
A native of Orlando, Levine Farmer attended Dr. Phillips High School (where she was “super shy”) and majored in English at the University of Florida, before making her way to New York City. “I wanted to write to perform,” says Levine Farmer. “During my day, they didn’t have a lot
of stories that I thought were a reflection of the things that I wanted to see, so I pursued writing because I was good at it.” Entering a graduate program at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts straight out of undergrad “was an amazing experience for me. Of course, New York will take the shyness out of you.”
After grad school, a 10-year stint in Los Angeles pursuing an acting career led to her brief return to New York in a friend’s off-Broadway play. “I was amazed by the experience of doing his original work there. And when I got back to L.A., I was like, ‘I can do that,’” recalls Levine Farmer, who then produced a script she’d written in grad school using money saved from her day job. “It was the first time that I produced and directed, and I don’t think that I went back to acting after that. I just love the storytelling element of directing.”
Due to a “spiritual feeling that I’m probably not supposed to be [in L.A.] forever”, Levine Farmer returned home to Orlando in 2010, when she presented her play Sweet Evalina at Orlando
Shakes and started SparKyL Entertainment, before taking a job teaching theater at a local private school. After meeting her husband, Vince Farmer, the couple began producing shows together, despite his background being more in mathematics and basketball than the arts. “He would always attend the rehearsals when I was teaching,” says Kyona of Vince, “and he’s just really mesmerized by the process of building from start to finish.”
Following a few fallow years, SparKyL sparked back to life in 2024 with The Color Purple: The Musical, performing in the same Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater where Next to Normal will be this weekend. Affording such a vaunted venue isn’t easy as an independent producer — even after the discounted rental rate offered to 501(c)(3) educational organizations and free rehearsal space at a Maitland church — but Levine Farmer says their focus goes beyond profits. “We don’t have any children, so the things that we would do with having children, we invest in doing things that we love,” she explains. “We just really try to
TACOS & VIBES? SAY LESS.
give our best to establish the kind of show that we want to be known for.”
On the opposite end of the budgetary scale, SparKyL caught my eye at last May’s Orlando Fringe Festival with Bobby Lee Blood, a family drama that Levine Farmer originally created as a one-woman show. Levine Farmer calls her first Fringe experience “extremely, extremely fulfilling,” adding, “I just didn’t know that it would be so much fun to see so much new work, just to be in that atmosphere of artistry.”
Intriguingly, Bobby Lee Blood featured two different casts: one white-presenting and one African American. “I love new perspectives on stories, [and] there are particular stories that are specific to African Americans, or a certain type of culture or race,” says Levine Farmer. “There are some stories that are universal, [and] I find it fascinating to go into the human perspective of stories that don’t have a specific cultural context.”
Similarly, while Next to Normal features a predominately white-presenting cast (with understudies of color) led by Angela Tims and Mathew Nash-Brown as Diana and Dan Goodman, Levine Farmer cites a personal connection to the material that goes deeper than culture. “I am drawn to just a good story,” says Levine Farmer. “Then once my mother and my mother-in-law were diagnosed with dementia, the topic of the show was extremely interesting to us. And when I opened up the casting, I knew that I didn’t want to stick to a specific cultural cast, so I just opened it up to anyone.”
The common thread connecting all these culturally diverse works is the “message of redemption” that Levine Farmer says she always looks for in a project. “We want hope, and we want stories that will require a conversation,” Levine Farmer says of her script selection process. “I know I need to do something fun and light, something stupidly funny, because we have been doing tons of shows that are dramas that cause a lot of thought. But they feel most fulfilling to me, the shows that really give people something when they leave.”
(Next to Normal, Oct. 3-5 at the Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater, Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, $65-$89.)

DOS HOMBRES
June, the contemporary Mexican restaurant in Thornton Park, wows thanks to the chemistry between chefs Jason Campbell and Nick Grecco
BY FAIYAZ KARA
Since Jason Campbell left Luke’s Kitchen to join forces with Nick Grecco at Team Market Group, the chef bros have been at it, testing and tinkering in their kitchen/lab like the culinary equivalents of Walter White and Jesse Pinkman. They perfected recipes for Sonoran tacos at Taco Kat, experimented with myriad dough permutations for their faultless tavern-style pizzas at Nuri’s, then blew people’s minds (and perhaps budgets) with their revolutionary $15 hot dog at Primrose Lanes.
But the duo’s “Blue Sky” moment came when they fired up the kitchen at June, the contemporary Yucatecan restaurant with a CDMX pulse in the corazón of Thornton Park. And not with any one dish, either, but rather, all of them. Having eaten my way through the entire menu (with the help of a couple of friends), it’s hard not to bestow June with “Best New Restaurant” honors. But, like Heisenberg’s postulation, there’s a principle of uncertainty when it comes to such things. What really impresses is the depth of detail and technique Campbell and Grecco exhibit in their dishes, be it the sextet of salsas served with a rustic guac ($14) finished with herb oil, or drippy-lush, carnitas-style duck confit ($54) cooked with condensed milk, Mexican Coke and chilies à la Enrique Olvera before being seared and roasted on the wood-fired grill.
In fact, most every protein on June’s focused menu is licked by the flames of Florida oak:
Hawaiian kanpachi ($48) looking like the lengua of some crispy-tongued beast set in a pool of blood-red guajillo-tomato butter; chicken al pastor, cooked sous vide with chicken fat before an ice bath and a quick fire; chili-buttered lump crab on tostadas ($20) slicked with brown butter aioli or atop luxuriant esquites ($20) of creamed corn puree and smoky farro verde; or an absolutely bonkers bone-out short rib ($64) set in a demi-glace fortified with ancho chiles, black vinegar and more south-of-the-border cola.
There are corn-based vessels (made using masa procured from Joe and David Creech of Hunger Street Tacos) served for the purposes of setting, scooping and sopping. A winning formula: Tortillas x Short Rib Dipped in DemiGlace + Pickled Onions = Flavor Bomba. But winning formulas are what these two cooking chemists compose for a living. A tostada made from nixtamalized corn topped with pressed tuna rubbed with tamarind ponzu and sesame seeds is my kind of chemical romance.
You’ll notice Asian touches in many dishes –morita XO sauce with black vinegar and crispy fried garlic positively smokes in a tuna crudo ($18) laid beneath slivers of avocado and plum textured with a wee cube of crispy rice; miso mole inside cut halves of sweet potato ($14) with burnt agave, peanut secca and pepitas is the best preparation of the tuber I’ve had the pleasure of ingesting; grilled baby romaine

($14) slaps with a miso-mustard-agave dressing avalanched with ricotta salata; a bracing hamachi ceviche is eased with coconut, kiwi and Thai basil; and tempura-battered cod zings with a tartar-tamarind drizzle in the fish taco ($9).
June may be influenced by the likes of Baldio, La Docena, Cosme and Acamaya, but, even under the auspices of the TMG cartel, these two chefs, with a big assist from exec sous Tommy Aguilar, inspire. Their tamale dumplings ($17) — “guests keep thinking they are gyoza,” Campbell says — aren’t potstickers, but little gnocchi-like dumplings, or chochoyotes , made from the Creech masa. Florida rock shrimp sauteed in chili butter and pasilla pepper puree are then tossed onto the dumplings with pickled cucumber, lime crema and cilantro and it’s nothing short of signature. Curled scallions on the dish are sliced lengthwise for that fancy finish.
More fancy: an onion soubise in the form of a mousse graces chili-dusted, butter-braised cabbage ($12) and, like the grilled lettuce and sweet potatoes, is a go-to veg option. The carrots ($12), too. First they’re lightly roasted, then they’re charred in a cast iron pan, and lastly roasted in a smoke box before being served with Lil’ Moo cheese, salsa macha and a golden raisin puree. The veg set and gluten-intolerant can have a field day here, though vegans may be SOL.
I asked a very prominent Mexican chef, whom I’ll call “Mr. Salamanca,” about his opinion on June and this was his take: “As a Mexican, I truly appreciate their boldness in offering something unique in a city crowded with so many Mexican restaurants. This is Mexican cuisine as seen through a Southern American lens and the combination works very well.”
Indeed it does, right down to the decor with its earthy tones and rustic mien.
Grecco’s chocolate cremosa ($12), ostensibly his take on Cosme’s buñuelo, with creamy chocolate set beneath the snowflake-shaped fried dough, is as stirring as Campbell’s crème caramel ($12). The “flan,” drizzled with espresso syrup, topped with brûléed bananas and served with caramelized banana ice cream crunched with peanut-cacao nibs, is ambitious without sacrificing comfort. I haven’t even touched on the beverages, like the tequila-based “watermelon” ($15) and “pepper” ($14) cocktails but, as Mr. Salamanca noted,“they are well-crafted.”
Campbell and Grecco will fully immerse themselves in live-fire cooking when Eastwood opens next year in Mills 50, so consider June — a moniker arbitrarily chosen as it gave no real clue to the concept — a precursor.
But the hype is real, and if you don’t know the restaurant now, you will. June. Say my name. fkara@orlandoweekly.com

Wall-of-sound indie rockers Hotline TNT are coming for Orlando’s ears … and roller coasters
BY IDA V. ESKAMANI
“Even if these capitalist reptile-people own the media companies and our social media, it doesn’t necessarily reflect how everyone feels. And I think there’s a way we can figure this out and live in a better world together.”
When we spoke to Will Anderson — founder, singer and guitarist of rapidly ascending alternative rock band Hotline TNT — he was in the courtyard of a Holiday Inn Express somewhere in San Francisco, recovering from a 14-hour drive from Vancouver the day before. Since the release of their latest album, Raspberry Moon, on Third Man Records, this summer, Hotline TNT have been on the road seemingly nonstop, with no signs of slowing down.
This is a band on the rise. For longtime listeners of Anderson’s work, that comes as no surprise. Proudly hailing from Chippewa Valley,
Wisconsin, the artist has built a loyal following over many years, playing in local bands, booking shows, touring the country and making music.
Prior to Hotline TNT, Anderson’s Vancouverbased DIY project Weed established him as an anchor in underground indie music.
Raspberry Moon is Hotline TNT’s third album, but the first Anderson wrote in collaboration with the full band. “This album is just the latest step of evolution for the band. We had everyone working on it together this time,” notes Anderson. “Still kind of the same beginning stages of me writing the demos by myself, and then we took it to the studio, and got everyone’s fingerprints on it, just kind of seeing where the songs take us. Seems like it keeps getting better and better.”
Anderson and bandmates Philip Haylen Trammel, Lucky Austin Hunter and Michael Thomas Ralston make music that is loud
and layered, each track densely packed with Anderson’s signature wall-of-sound sonic style.
The artist cites inspiration from acts like Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine, Teenage Fanclub and Dinosaur Jr. When asked to describe Hotline TNT, Anderson puts it simply: “loud guitar music with catchy vocals.”
It’s a sound that, as of last month, you can’t find on Spotify.“We are leaving the Spotify streaming service,” the band shared on Instagram. “The company that bills itself as the steward of all recorded music has proven beyond the shadow of a doubt that it does not align with the band’s values in any way. A cooler world is possible.”
“We’re very proud and happy about that decision,” says Anderson.“We feel strongly that music culture does not have to equal streaming, and streaming does not equal music culture. And yeah, I think we’re just trying to nudge at least our fans in a different direction as far as how they’re consuming music and art.”
Hotline TNT are part of a growing list of artists pulling their music off the streaming platform in response to Spotify’s ongoing exploitation of artists and CEO Daniel Ek’s war profiteering. We ask Anderson how best to support bands like his challenging these rigged systems and the multinational corporations designing them.
HOTLINE TNT with Toner, Deadharrie 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 6
The Social 54 N. Orange Ave. foundation-presents.com $17.50
“The biggest one is buying a concert ticket,” says Anderson. “We’ve been doing laps around the country for three years. Going to Europe next month. We went to Japan earlier this year … no real signs of us slowing down. I think the biggest thing is trying to go to see live music.”
Orlando has an opportunity to do exactly that on Monday, when Anderson and company make it across the country to the Social. They’ll be supported by Toner and new local act Deadharrie. The last time Hotline TNT played here, Orlando left a mark on the band as only Orlando could. “We went on the Hagrid roller coaster, which is probably the best roller coaster I’ve ever been on in my life. So shout-out to Hagrid for that.” And on their upcoming show, Anderson offers another kind of thrill.“Anyone who’s reading this, well, I’ll see you in the mosh pit.” music@orlandoweekly.com

LOCAL RELEASES
Look at the straightforward title The San Francisco Renaissance & Alien Witch and you see a split record between notable Orlando bands The San Francisco Renaissance and Alien Witch. What you’ll hear when you listen to it, however, will sound eerily like a collection by a single entity. And there are reasons aplenty for that. Foremost, there’s some key overlap in personnel. Specifically, the bands’ respective principals — The SFR’s Parker Mabry and AW’s Dee Dee Crittenden — both play in each other’s band. To further the blur, the material, despite coming from two different entities, was played mostly by the same small core of Mabry, Crittenden and Alien Witch bassist Mauricio Reyes. Furthermore, they did it in isolation in the attic of a remote 120-year-old house in North Florida.
From all that concentrated intersectionality and collaboration comes the distinctly unified result of The San Francisco Renaissance & Alien Witch. The eight-song album is evenly split, with the first four songs penned by the SFR and the last four by AW.
The opening SFR side is immediate in both music and intent. This is psych-rock revivalism as direct and faithful as it gets, which is practically imperative if you’re going to call yourself The San Francisco Renaissance. What that lacks in innovation is amply replaced by the inspired flair of these songs. Beyond the impressive fidelity to psych tradition, what separates the SFR from other revivalists is the pop precision and concision of Mabry’s songwriting. Although they’re absolute voyages, none of the songs stretch beyond the three-minute range and all of them ring with melodies so brilliant that they often sound like The Stone Roses on acid.
The San Francisco Renaissance & Alien Witch is a sumptuous feast for true psych believers, one that takes the traditional 1960s ethos and injects it with the modern diesel of bands like The Brian Jonestown Massacre and Warlocks
Midway through, Alien Witch impose their usual dark aura and bring things down to a funeral march with “Get Out Alive.” Immediately after, they resume the blissedout cruising altitude set by the SFR and keep the party up in the clouds.
There are some fine distinctions between the two halves of this work. But the minds, spirits and hands behind it are in such synchronicity that everything dovetails without effort or seam. The result is less a split record than a joint album. And it’s a sumptuous feast for true psych believers, one that takes traditional 1960s ethos and injects it with the modern diesel of bands like The Brian Jonestown Massacre and Warlocks.
An odyssey that’s at once high and heavy, The San Francisco Renaissance & Alien Witch album is a rare gestalt that’s not simply a coupling but a convergence, a grand cosmic singularity. It’s the document of two Orlando luminaries becoming one force in pure communion with
the psychedelic oversoul. The joint album now streams everywhere.
You can catch Alien Witch live this weekend on an all-star local bill alongside Black Wick, Snotnoze Saleem and Los Jarritos (8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, The Falcon, no cover).
CONCERT PICKS THIS WEEK
Giovanni Hidalgo: There probably isn’t a greater or more native way to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month than this special twoshow engagement with legendary Latin-jazz icon Giovanni Hidalgo. In a decorated career spanning over four decades, this brilliant son of Puerto Rico has mastered, furthered and redefined the art of Latin percussion. From work alongside greats like Tito Puente, Dizzy Gillespie, Arturo Sandoval, Carlos Santana, Mickey Hart, D’Angelo and countless others, Hidalgo’s broken boundaries and blazed trails to become one of history’s greatest conga players. It’ll be an evening of eminence, history and intimacy. (7 and 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, Timucua Arts Foundation, $37.50-$50)
Like Father, Boston Marriage, Funeral Homes, Lowtalk: With a deep lineup of homegrown indie-rock notables Like Father, Funeral Homes and Lowtalk, this concert would already be worth recommendation. What ups this show to an imperative is the return of exceptional Orlando band Boston Marriage. After emerging in the late 2010s to become one of the city’s most promising acts, they went suddenly, utterly and agonizingly quiet. Now, Boston Marriage are miraculously rising again to show us what music of true indie integrity sounds like. (7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, Will’s Pub, $12) baolehuu@orlandoweekly.com

Lil Wayne
Lil Wayne, who claimed the title of “best rapper alive” back in 2000, is touring on the release of latest album, Tha Carter IV, and paying tribute to over two decades of his Carter series of albums. The MC made his debut at the age of 12, signing with Cash Money Records as the label’s youngest member in 1995, eventually earning a Grammy Award for Best Rap Album for 2008’s Tha Carter III, with hits like “Lollipop,” which became a No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100. Amidst controversy that has surrounded Weezy after he mind-bogglingly decided to endorse President Trump, the tour itself has stirred up mixed emotions among fans, with a recent review from Phoenix New Times calling it a “CliffsNotes version of hip-hop,” adding, “God forbid a girl wants to hear more than one verse of ‘Got Money.’” Yet even the grumpiest critic can see that the fans are eating these shows up, and Lil Wayne is bringing energy to spare. And that’s what it’s all about in the end, right? 8 p.m., Kia Center, 400 W. Church St., kiacenter.com, $65-$500. — Azlyn Cato

Oktoberfest
Drink beer, snack on giant pretzels and celebrate the month of October Bavarian-style at Casselberry’s Oktoberfest 2025. Presented by the German American Society of Central Florida, the annual tradition started back in 1963 will return with plenty of German beer, meat-and-potato dishes, live music, dancing and a flag parade. Children under the age of 11 receive free entry to enjoy a “Kids Korner,” so the kinder won’t be left out of the fun. Prost! Noon, German American Society of Central Florida, 381 Orange Lane, Casselberry, orlandogermanclub.com, $7-$100 — AC

RoSaWay
The Central Florida Jazz Society and Blue Bamboo present RoSaWay live this week, bringing a Parisian disco-jazz fusion to the City Beautiful. The ensemble features Rachel Ombredane on flute and vocals and Stéphane “SteF” Avellaneda on drums. After meeting in Paris and discovering their onstage chemistry, the two not only fell in love but launched RoSaWay, merging art and life harmoniously. Since then, they’ve built a reputation across Europe and the U.S. as a can’t-miss live proposition. The Bamboo v.2 should be a great fit. 8 p.m., Blue Bamboo Center for the Arts, 460 E. New England Ave., bluebambooartcenter.com, $35 — Emmy Bailey

VBar: Condamned
This will be the second week of the V Bar — the vampiric drag event usually paired with Nosferatu and staged at the Renaissance Theatre — residency at the Plaza Live, cheekily dubbed Condamned. The name comes from city officials shutting down and effectively condemning the Ivanhoe Village venue for construction issues and code violations. This couldn’t come at a worse time for the Ren: The immersive and spooky extravaganza that is Nosferatu is both the theater’s most ambitious undertaking and biggest moneymaker of the year. As this issue goes to press, there are no developments in the Ren’s talks with the city to resolve the issue. But while Nosferatu is just too involved to be staged anywhere else, V Bar has hopped over to the Plaza Live. And it’s worth your time to darken the doors of this Milk District venue to see local drag luminaries like Coco Cavalli, Myki Meeks, Orusha San Miguel, Beatrixxx Oddity, Black Magix Royal, Angelica Sanchez and Allegra D all putting on their undead best. Fangs crossed they can go back to the Ren soon. 9 p.m.., The

Thot Squad
Like a Peaches for the ende-tymes or a DIY Megan Thee Stallion, Michigan rapper Thot Squad is a revelation of punkoid chaos, dayglo couture and brilliantly salacious rhymes. The young musician started releasing singles with 2022 single “Super Soaker,” and then kept diligently releasing filthy party jams (sometimes monthly), breaking through to the near-mainstream on the strength of viral number “Pound Cake.” Now she’s shockingly coming to Orlando and if she plays the beyond-arch trap of “Hoes Depressed” (key lyric: a jubilant shout of “JK I take my meds”), it’s over for us. There is a meet-and-greet option that you owe to yourself. 8 p.m., Will’s Pub, 1042 N. Mills Ave., willspub.org, $30. — MM

Collective Echo
An ambitious new multi-genre “wellness experience” (step back, winger yoga-moms and RFK Jr. cosplayers, it’s not that type of wellness) returns this weekend with perhaps their most rounded-out event yet. Taking over Audubon Park watering hole Redlight Redlight, the hybrid LGBTQ+, gothic and alternative gathering features artists, vendors, DJs, live music and alt-drag. It’s an event with intention, though: The focus is on community gathering and healing through sound. To that end, sound-bath sonics come courtesy of Eva Strangelace and Tuesday, Doug Rhodehamel will set up an installation and there will even be guided meditation. The drag contingent for the evening is Sue Cyde, Anesthesia, Medusha and De Sastre. Against all odds, these meld harmoniously! 6:30 p.m., Redlight Redlight, 2810 Corrine Drive, instagram.com/collectiveecho, $12. — MM

Freddie Gibbs
There are few MCs in the hip-hop game today who balance underground cred, unerring sonic adventurism and critical and audience hosannahs quite like Freddie Gibbs. And now he’s coming to school Orlando. Gibbs heads to the
City Beautiful as part of a tour with mad scientist Alchemist touting Alfredo 2, the recent sequel to Grammy-nominated 2020 masterpiece Alfredo (Sidebar: We should hand Alchemist the key to the city, given his recent appearance here with Erikyah Badu and now this.) And it’s that boldness in revisiting and attempting to one-up an acknowledged masterpiece that keeps Gibbs and
Alchemist ever on the edge of the “next thing.” Each delivers the goods — Gibbs with hard-hitting lyrics and a dizzying, ever-evolving flow, and Alchemist with lush soundworlds and enigmatic samples. “Lemon Pepper Steppers” live might well bring the house down. 6 p.m., The Beacham, 46 N. Orange Ave., foundation-presents.com, $35-$70. — MM
