» Clinics file emergency motion to halt Florida’s abortion ban Attorneys for seven abortion clinics and a doctor filed an emergency motion last week asking the Florida Supreme Court to halt a new law that prevents abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy. The motion was the latest twist in a three-month legal battle over the law (HB 5), which the Republican-controlled Legislature and Gov. Ron DeSantis approved this year amid a national debate about abortion rights. Leon County Circuit Judge John Cooper on July 5 issued a temporary injunction against the law, ruling that it violated a privacy clause in the Florida Constitution that has bolstered abortion rights in the state for more than three decades. But a panel of the 1st District Court of Appeal overturned the temporary injunction, effectively allowing the 15-week abortion limit to be in effect.

» Ousted Orlando Museum of Art trustees say they were misled in months before Basquiat raid Former trustees of the Orlando Museum of Art say they were intentionally kept in the dark by museum leadership about the questionable authenticity of a Jean-Michel Basquiat exhibit that led to the museum being raided by the FBI in June. The Heroes & Monsters exhibit of supposedly never-before-seen Basquiat paintings was pitched as a coup for the museum, nearly up until the moment that FBI agents were seizing the paintings. Five former trustees of the museum who were removed from the board last week say that ex-board chairwoman Christina Brumback kept news of the FBI’s interest in the paintings from them. The New York Times notes that former museum director Aaron De Groft and Brumback received a subpoena from the FBI in July 2021. They made the decision to keep the request for communications around the exhibit confidential from everyone but themselves and one financial advisor. “Had we known when we should’ve known, the show would not have happened,” booted trustee Winifred Sharp told the Times. “I am a former judge and a lawyer, and I know the implications of being served with a subpoena: They think there’s probable cause that there’s fraud. Everyone would normally go ‘Whoa! Whoa!TheWhoa!’”ex-trustees spoke with the paper after Brumback published an op-ed in the Orlando Sentinel that seemed to indicate all members of the board knew about the subpoena for months. They spoke out, objecting to the use of the word “us” in the column. “At that time, our then-director repeatedly assured us — through the presentation of Orange County gets funding for electric buses, OMA trustees say they were misled, OCSO deputies disarm and then shoot a man, and other news you may have missed.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office has released bodycam footage of one of their deputies killing a man in the parking lot of the Heritage Hotel on South Orange Blossom Trail. Cops were called to the scene at midday on Aug. 6 after shots had been fired between two men. When they arrived, they found 21-year-old Dylan Michael Jimenez suffering from a gunshot wound on the ground. A bystander was helping to treat Jimenez and identified himself as a paramedic before describing his injuries. Jimenez’s brother, 28-year-old Bryan Matthew Richardson, was standing nearby holding a handgun that was pointed at the ground. When bystanders alerted the deputies to Richardson’s gun, two deputies ran toward him. He extended his arm out to create space between himself and one OCSO deputy while keeping the gun pointed out the ground. The deputies yelled at him to drop the weapon. The video shows Richardson’s gun being taken by an OCSO deputy. Immediately after he was disarmed, the deputy whose bodycam footage was shared by OCSO fired his weapon eight times at Richardson from mere feet away. Two seconds elapsed between Richardson being told to drop the gun and the shooting. Both Richardson and his brother later died of their injuries. A third man involved in the altercation with the brothers was shot but survived. The deputy who killed Richardson was placed on paid temporary administrative leave, according to a statement released along with the body camera footage by OCSO Sheriff John Mina.

BY ALEX GALBRAITH AND NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA documentary evidence — that highly qualified art experts had vetted the authenticity of the pieces in the ‘Heroes and Monsters’ exhibition,” Brumback wrote. “Our director presented us with several authentication reports, specifically one from Diego Cortez, the nowdeceased man widely credited with ‘discovering’ Basquiat and who served on Basquiat’s estate’s official authentication committee. Based on this and the other reports, our director reassured us that everything was in order.” Since the board was not informed that anything was amiss, this reassurance would not have taken place. Former board president and trustee Ted Brown said that Brumback’s secrecy on the matter was “a breach of her responsibilities.”“Theboard of directors is the only entity — not the chair of the board, but the entire board — that holds the corporate franchise,” he said. “We are the responsible party for the good, the bad, the ugly, and everything in between at the museum.” Sharp said that the ouster of several board members came right as they were about to ask Brumback to proffer her resignation. In a less-crowded meeting, Brumback stepped down from her position but remained on the board. The secrecy and scandal seems to be at the heart of the resignation of OMA’s interim director, Dr. Luder Whitlock. He resigned his post mere weeks after being brought into the position, shortly before OMA announced its trustee purge. He also spoke to the New York Times about the state of the museum. “It’s obvious that by resigning, I was not pleased with certain things. And that’s all I can tell you,” he said.

The emergency motion, in part, seeks a stay of the appeals court’s decision. If granted, the motion would put the 15-week abortion law on hold while the Supreme Court considers the underlying issues about the temporary injunction. “Granting plaintiffs’ requests to stay the First DCA’s decision and allow the injunction to take effect would restore the status quo while litigation continues and allow Floridians to resume exercise of their constitutional right to decide whether to carry a pregnancy to term or obtain a pre-viability abortion — a right that this [Supreme] Court has repeatedly recognized is encompassed by the Florida Constitution’s right of privacy,” said the brief, filed by attorneys for the American Civil Liberties Union, Planned Parenthood, the Center for Reproductive Rights and the national law firm of Jenner & Block. The clinics and the doctor, Shelly Hsiao-Ying Tien, filed the lawsuit June 1. After Cooper issued the temporary injunction, attorneys for the state quickly appealed to the 1st District Court of Appeal — a move that, under court rules, automatically placed a stay on the injunction.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection said this week that $68 million will be divided among 13 counties moving from diesel to electric buses. The money, coming from Florida’s share of a 2016 settlement between Volkswagen and the U.S. Department of Justice over emissions violations, is expected to cover the costs of 227 electric buses in Alachua, Broward, Duval, Escambia, Hillsborough, Leon, Marion, Miami-Dade, Monroe, Orange, Palm Beach, Pasco and Pinellas counties. The state previously announced that money from its $166 million share of the $14.7 billion Volkswagen settlement would go to school districts in Broward, Manatee, Miami-Dade, Orange, Palm Beach, Pinellas and Sarasota counties to buy 218 electric school buses. Also, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced that $42 million was headed to the Central Florida Regional Transportation Authority, the Jacksonville Transportation Authority, Lee County and the state for low- and no-emission buses, equipment and worker training.

A consortium of a dozen major landowners in Collier County (which has a history of corruption) had been working with some environmental groups and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on something unusual. It was supposed to be a way to ensure panthers wouldn’t lose out when the big machines started tearing up their habitat. As the story reported, “The Habitat Conservation Plan, known as HCP, would have clustered development on [continued on page 15]

After working for 12 years on a plan to protect Florida panthers, developers backed out; documents show they were too cheap to do what’s required to save our official state animal.

While I am heartened by the way Wausau celebrates its possums, I wish we treated our panthers with a similar amount of respect. They’re our state animal, for heaven’s sake.Yet too often they’ve been regarded as nothing but hun gry intruders, four-legged speed bumps and impediments to Something“progress.” darkly momentous happened last week involving panthers. I know it was a big deal, because more than one person contacted me to say, “Hey, did you hear aboutHerethis?”was the Fort Myers News-Press headline that attracted all the attention: “Developers drop out of conser vation plan to protect panther habitat in Collier County.” Developers bail out on protecting Florida panthers? What a shock! Do you need a minute to sit down? I paused long enough to sip some sweet tea, then dug into the details — which are, in a word, fascinating.

A ugust is usually the worst month to be in Florida. We’re wilting from the heat and humidity and watching the National Weather Service bulletins because it’s peak hurricane season. Fortunately, there’s one event this month that highlights what a wonderful place this is.

THE YEARS OF THE CAT

I am referring, of course, to the Wausau Possum Festival in the WausauPanhandle.celebrates the possum for saving everyone during the Great Depression, when they had no money to buy food. This is commemorated not only by the festival but also by a monument dedicated to the noble marsupial.

The fact that this whole effort came to naught has some people pretty upset. “It’s really raw to me right now,” Elizabeth Fleming of Defenders of Wildlife, the organization that first proposed this plan, told me. “It’s such a lost opportunity.”

I called Noss, who in addition to his Ph.D. in wildlife ecology holds a black belt in karate. I kept my tone respectful, as I always do when speaking to a real Iron Man who could easily kick my butt.

As often happens when there’s an environmen tal issue in Florida, environmental groups are at odds over what to do. On one side are the deal-cutters who try to negotiate at least a partial win. In this case that’s Defenders, Audubon of Florida and the Florida Wildlife Federation.

On the other side, are the hard-liners who fight every step of the way, even at the risk of defeat. Here the leading group is the Conservancy of Southwest Florida, and they drew plenty of flak for opposing the landowners. The Conservancy hired a couple of scientists to review the HCP. One was a panther expert named Robert Frakes, the other an expert on conservation planning named Reed Noss. Neither endorsed it. Quite the opposite.

“It’s fatally flawed,” he said of the big plan. “It would need to be completely redone.”

I think the landowners just thought they could get away with it. [continued from page 11] [continued on page 21]

● SEPT. 7-13, 2022 ● ORLANDO WEEKLY 15

The funny thing is that the landowners are now acting like they didn’t get their money’s worth.

He found several serious problems. The big gest one was easy to spot: The leading cause of death for panthers these days is being run over by cars and trucks (some of them, no doubt, bearing “Protect the Panther” license plates). The new developments envisioned in the HCP would put around 200,000 more vehicles a day onto roads around the region. Yet the plan offered zero options for steering the driv ers away from turning every panther into a pancake. Not just panthers would get flattened, Noss noted. Other imperiled species would go splat as well, includ ing gopher tortoises, indigo snakes, bonneted bats, wood storks and eagles. Yet the HCP ignored this problem, he said, offering no new wildlife underpasses, fences, or any other structures to stop the potential slaughter outside its own footprint. Instead, it talked about the acreage that would be pre served, as if that somehow made up for all the added traffic.Noss told me that to really protect panthers would cost the landowners something like “a couple of hundred mil lion.” A huge investment, sure, but without it their plan simply wouldn’t work, he said. How could they skip even addressing it?

Looks to me like negotiations fell apart over one question: Would the plan really protect our 200 or so endangered cats, or just provide the landowners with win dow dressing for their rapacious disruption of the habitat?

In response to that story, the service put out a strange press release trying to explain that this was all perfectly fine and not a conflict of interest: “The service created a firewall between the Collier County landowners and the permit they sought,” the release explained. “This arrangement allowed senior and experienced biologists to undertake the difficult analyses needed … while also allowing other biologists to tackle the more routine permit applications without delay.”

FOOTING THE BILL Waaaay back near the start of this 12-year process, I asked the former leader of Defenders of Wildlife in Florida, Laurie MacDonald, why she would try to cut a deal with developers and miners. The answer she gave me wasShestraightforward.hadlearnedshe could not trust the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to do its job. Over and over the agency in charge of protecting the panthers from extinction had let themOftendown.when federal biologists in Florida tried to block development plans in panther habitat, their bosses in Atlanta would overrule them. Sometimes they were ordered to use junk science to justify approving a devel opment. A whistleblower in the agency sued to make them stop that. He won but lost his job and had to fight to get it back. The Fish and Wildlife Service has other problems besides requiring the removal of its employees’ spines. No matter which party is in power, the service is constantly underfunded. It certainly didn’t have the resources to give a thorough review to the massive HCP submitted by the landowners’ consultant. Yet the service — somehow — found a way to help pay the consultant to draw up the plan in the first place. It forked over $765,357 in grants to help cover what the landowners’ spokesperson told me a few years ago wound up being “north of $1 million.” This is where I should mention that the landowners are not poor folks needing government assistance. Their numbers include not one but two companies named for the developer who started Collier County and also contro versial former state wildlife commissioner Liesa Priddy. So in a way it makes sense that the Fish and Wildlife Service got them to foot the bill for reviewing the plan they submitted. Here’s the way the odd arrangement was described last year on a news site called The Intercept: “A memorandum of agreement signed by the agency and [the property owners] in June 2016 stipulates that the land owners would pay FWS more than $200,000 to fund the agency’s normal operations while it dedicated staff away from those duties to facilitate the development and review of the conservation plan and associated permits. FWS ulti mately invoiced Collier Enterprises for at least $292,000.”

45,000 acres around Immokalee, while preserving 107,000 acres of prime panther habitat.” The three groups started working on this in early 2010. That’s 12 years ago, which means the negotiations have been going on nearly as long as the convoluted filmogra phy of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which runs from Iron Man (2008) to She-Hulk, Attorney at Law (last week). If the panther plan had gone through, it would have been a Marvel-ous achievement: the biggest endangered species conservation plan east of the Mississippi River.

‘FATALLY FLAWED’

orlandoweekly.com

But now, instead of soaring to approval, it’s dropped in theSodirt.how did this long-running drive go off the rails? When I asked the feds, they had little to say. According to spokesman Chuck Underwood, “As the decision to withdraw the application was by the East Collier Property Owners we would refer you to them.” Yet documents I saw show the property owners blamed the feds for causing everything to go (to use a highly tech nical term) ker-flooey.

Whether she did look into it or forgot about it, nothing hap pened to move the ball downfield.

I consulted a recently retired panther biologist, Deborah Jansen, who has studied the big cats since 1981. She cares so much about saving them that she once gave a dying panther mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. She made it clear she had no involvement in the HCP but easily named the problem with any further development of that part of Collier.

BUILD A MONUMENT

The question I asked everyone I talked to was: What happens now? The consensus was that instead of one big project, the landowners will break their projects into indi vidual pieces to get separate permits. According to Crooks, the individual permitting process has already started with a project called Bellmar that’s supposed to plop 8,600 new residents next to the Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge.

from

Skipwith’s reply to Turner was a terse “Thank you for message and will look into this matter of the delay.”

The impasse remained until last week. That’s when Turner’s clients, refusing to budge, backed out. I contacted Turner to ask him how he failed to persuade the most developer-friendly administration in U.S. history to do his clients’ bidding. He didn’t reply. I assume he was busy calculating how many thousands of dollars to charge the landowners for trying to avoid spending millions.

“I really doubt that the panther can survive,” she said, “as long as it isn’t protected from roads.” Alas, no Marvel superheroes are going to swoop down and solve this. We mere humans are going to have to figure out if we want to allow developers to do whatever they please to make a big profit on their land while ignoring the impact on our treasured natural resources.

Buzzacco-Foerster told me that the landowners “intend to continue working together with their conservation group partners toward implementation of the tenets of the HCP, including permanent preservation of areas identified for preservation.”Butthebasic problem will remain with each project: As more people crowd into panther habitat, they will bring more cars and trucks that the panthers will have to dodge.

HIRING SHE-HULK Christian Spilker, a senior vice president of Collier Enterprises, once served as the primary spokesman for the landowners. I interviewed him back in 2018, which is, ironically, when Marvel’s Black Panther movie hit theaters. Spilker insisted that holding the developers whose proj ects create all the new traffic responsible for the driving abilities of those 200,000 new drivers is just wrong. “I don’t control your driving — or your texting and driv ing — that might have caused you to run over a panther,” he told me then. But he promised the Fish and Wildlife Service would analyze the impact of all those new drivers on the panther population. Boy, did they. Those “senior and experienced biologists” freed up by the property owners’ money reached a conclu sion similar to Noss’. They said the landowners would be responsible for the new drivers running over panthers, so the landowners would have to fix this. Otherwise, they said, no federal permits could be issued. Under the Endangered Species Act, those projects would jeopardize the future existence of Florida’s state animal. Hey look, I see a spine suddenly sprouting! In response, the landowners pursued a time-tested approach to dealing with any government employee refus ing to bow the knee: Go straight to the top. The owners had hired their own, non-green version of She-Hulk, Attorney at Law: a well-connected Washington lawyer named Andrew J. Turner. His job: Muscle those pipsqueak biologists into submission by complaining to their Big AccordingBoss.to documents sent me by Amber Crooks of the Conservancy, in 2020 Turner pleaded their case to the director of the Fish and Wildlife Service, Aurelia Skipwith, a Trump appointee whose experience as a former Monsanto employee did not include managing fish or wildlife.

Instead, in response, a very nice woman named Jenna Buzzacco-Foerster from a Fort Myers public relations firm emailed me the official statement of the Colliers, Priddy et. al. That statement said, in part, “It has become increasingly apparent that an HCP permit is not forthcoming, due in part to repeated delays caused by questions about future issues outside of the HCP area.” That’s a very polite way to say, “We’re too cheap to do what’s right,” don’t you think?

I have what I think is a practical solution, one inspired by the fine folks in Wausau. I would allow the landowners to build whatever they want on their land. But they can’t build a single road, and they have to tear out any that are there now. No vehicles allowed. Access is only on foot. That way they wouldn’t have to build all those expensive wildlife protection measures. Then they could use all the money they save by building a grand monument to our state animal.Ifnothing else, it will remind everyone that we used to have one. This story first appeared at the Florida Phoenix.

LAC: What did you do after exiting Bluma Wellness, and why return with Green Sentry?

A talk with Brady Cobb, CEO of Green Sentry, about taking over MedMen, the backstory of Sunburn Cannabis, and why DeSantis’ public stance on marijuana is ‘more smoke, less fire’

Largely, they’re running kind of out-ofstate playbooks in a state that is incredibly unique all on its own. The main reason I got back into the game was passion. We love Florida, we love high-end flower [and] being able to take that passion and pair it with what we believe is one of the most authentic brand stories. Our goal is to show the market both here and abroad, that really high-quality flower that’s just as good as anywhere else in the country can be built and grown right here in Florida.

orlandoweekly.com ● SEPT. 7-13, 2022 ● ORLANDO WEEKLY 27

What really attracted us to MedMen was the quality of the store locations and what they had done. The locations are the hardest part; cultivation we can build out. My observation is they, like a lot of com panies, grew too quickly in that 2017 and ’18 run-up. They were a very successful highend retailer in California [where] they never had to cultivate anything because everything was available via wholesale, just like you’d stock any other store. When they had to come to the states [like Florida] that have a vertical requirement, where they had to grow [and] actually operate and cultivate, they couldn’t do it from 2,600 miles away. So I think they got really good store locations but they couldn’t fill the stores up.

What sets Green Sentry’s Sunburn Cannabis apart from Florida’s market leaders?

How does Sunburn’s brand tell the story of your late father, Miami smuggler Clyde Walton “Bill” Cobb?

I do think a 2024 [referendum on rec reational cannabis] has a real shot, if you look at the public polling data. We’ve just got to get it on the ballot, and this version of the amendment is so much cleaner than the other ones; it’s not as subject to col lateral attack. So I’m going to be throwing my weight behind it and do what I can to help. And kudos to Trulieve for getting it out there to begin with. I do believe we’ve got a chance, and I just think some of the other stuff that’s been attributed to Gov. DeSantis is more smoke, less fire. skubersky@orlandoweekly.com

When I last spoke with Brady Cobb (Live Active Cultures, July 7, 2021), the medical marijuana mogul had recently sold Bluma Wellness and his One Plant dispen saries to Cresco Cannabis, which rebranded them as Sunnyside. Just over a year later, he’s back in business with Green Sentry, which purchased all the Florida assets of oncehot MedMen — including the University Boulevard location that’s conveniently adja cent to Toasted — and is currently creating the closest legal growing facility to Orlando in Winter Garden. Cobb caught me up on the Sunburn Cannabis brand he’s launching later this year, the increasingly competitive mar ket it faces, and his outlook for recreational weed’s future in the Sunshine State.

The DEA task force that was commis sioned to arrest my father for his smuggling operation in Florida was named Operation Sunburn, so it’s our little tip of the hat to the DEA.Ifyou lived in Florida, you knew some body that was moving weight. This is our culture; most of South Florida was built on the back of that, [so the brand] is all things 1970s-1980s Florida — race cars, fast boats, and actually being able to have fun again. We’re gonna live at the intersection of having fun, authenticity and high quality. The cool part is we have the original newspaper head lines on the front page of the Miami Herald all about my dad when he got in trouble [and] those articles were written by Carl Hiaasen, who’s become a good friend. So all of that stuff is in living color. Will we see adult recreational use legalized in Florida, considering Gov. DeSantis’ recent moves to further restrict the existing medical industry?

BY SETH KUBERSKY Green Sentry CEO Brady Cobb | courtesy photo

Why did MedMen, who were early industry leaders, leave Florida?

BC: We honestly took a month off. I went out to my family’s happy place out in Colorado. We spent a month out in Aspen justWedecompressing.didsomeconsulting out in California and Arizona where we did a few turnarounds for existing companies. And then we kept studying the Florida market. The three top players — Trulieve, Curaleaf and Verano [Müv] — have over 70 percent share combined, and they all kind of focus on that more medicinal feel, and a little bit more of a mid-to-lower quality product. So we saw that our lane was opening back up and we said OK, let’s look at jumping back in.

I think that some of that is noise. I think the governor likes to generate tax revenue from the industry. He has always — even though it’s portrayed a different way in the media — at least in my experience, been posi tive to cannabis. I used to call on him when I was in the U.S. House, and he was one of the few Republicans that were nice to us when we met with him on cannabis, back before he was governor.

OPENINGS & CLOSINGS: Sweet Buns , the Tampa-based Asian bakery with a location in Gainesville, will open on East Colonial Drive in Colonialtown North early next year. BY FAIYAZ KARA J ohn Zhao, the Tampa Bay-area res taurateur behind the Yummy House and Sweet Buns brands of restaurants and bakeries, appears determined to establish a foothold in the Orlando market. Earlier this year, Zhao opened an outpost of his Pho 813 concept near the Millenia Mall. Then in April, he opened what’s argu ably the flagship of his burgeoning culinary empire — YH Seafood Clubhouse — in Dr. Phillips. It’s modeled after Fishman Lobster Clubhouse, the famed Toronto restaurant whose soaring salvers of Hong Kong-style seafood have dropped the jaws of many a food personality, including David Chang, Eddie Huang and that Bizarre Foods guy who became persona non grata in 2018 after trash ing Orlando’s food scene. When I ask Zhao why he chose to open YH Seafood Clubhouse in Orlando, and not Miami or Tampa, he says that Orlando has a market for this sort of cooking. It’s also why he poured nearly $1.75 million into the buildout of the space and hired the designer of another storied Toronto restaurant — Yu Seafood — to deck the place out. In fact, YH’s extensive menu has a lot more in common with the elevated and ambitious style of Cantonese cuisine Yu offers than the gluttonous freefor-all at Fishman Lobster Clubhouse. The presentation of mandarin bass ($68) is visu ally alluring, its fileted carcass sitting upright in dramatic fashion with morsels of the fish, wok-tossed in a peppercorned Sichuan sauce, laid before its curvy skeletal remains. It’s a fiery delight. The bass, it should be noted, is flown in from China every couple of weeks, so the carbon footprint is somewhat heavy, like theTheprice.presentation of the flounder ($52) is just as dramatic, with the head, fins and tail fried in salt and pepper and the fillet sauteed in a wine sauce with snap peas, asparagus and bell pepper. It’s showy fare, but not garish in the least. Same goes for jumbo oysters ($15) from Washington State graced with garlic-soy and black bean sauce, and an exemplary dish of osmanthus clams (which are really the innards of the sea cucumber) and emperor clams (also known as Pacific mud clams) slicked in a balanced XOZhaosauce.brought in cooks from New York City to run YH’s kitchen and, no question, all that experience shows. Ribeye ($45) is hardly a dish that comes to mind when din ing at a Cantonese restaurant but at YH, it should be. “I’ve never had ribeye this ten der,” says our experienced server, and he’s right. The soy-marinated, wok-fired chunks were pillows of protein on a plate prettied with assorted mushrooms, onions, slices of orange and a side of veg comprising Brussels sprouts, asparagus, radishes and peppers. Then there’s the glorious Hong Kong roast chicken ($28 half; $52 whole) with a skin as crisp as it is gleaming. But it’s really about the seafood here, and the towering pile of fried lobster ($68) is a showstopper. Amid the crustaceous heap: French fries, fried scallions, chilies and garlic. The batter on the lobster has a subtle sweet ness to it — “reminds me of funnel cake at the county fair,” says one of my dining comrades — and the combination of sweet, salty, but tery and crunchy makes this dish a total ride, so have fun with it. There’s a cocktail menu, and a serviceable wine list, but we were content enjoying it all with Lucky Dragon lager. Oh, and they do offer dim sum: every day from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Some may balk at the prices, but a meal here is as gratifying for gourmands as it is for ’grammers. Those seafood towers, BTW, can be piled high with Dungeness crab, Alaskan king crab, Crystal Lake prawns and rock fish. Just go for it. This is YH, after all, so Y not. fkara@orlandoweekly.com

Congressman Matt Gaetz can’t understand why the show is titled Growing Up and not Aging Out. (Disney+)

Flight/Risk — An unflinching documentary introduces us to those whose lives were af fected by the Boeing 737 crashes of 2018 and 2019. I mean, thank God for the pandemic, right? Otherwise that streak could have gone on forever. (Amazon Prime)

The Good Fight — The six-season legal drama comes to a close with Christine Baranski’s Diane Lockhart observing the overturning of Roe v. Wade, the rollback of voting protec tions and the resumption of the Cold War and wondering if her life’s battles have been worth it. Cheer up, Diane: At least we have White Claw now! (Paramount+) Growing Up — Series creator Brie Larson uses a combination of interviews and dramatic re-enactments to tell the stories of 10 real-life young people between the ages of 18 and 22.

The Hype — The winning designs from Season 1 of Offset’s streetwear-design com petition sold out within 24 hours of being put up for sale on StockX, so expect a similar feeding frenzy at the end of this second go-’round. In related news, parent company Warner Bros. Discovery just listed its entire slate of 2022 shows on eBay. (HBO Max)

ON (small) SCREENS IN ORLANDO Streaming premieres you won’t want to miss by Steve Schneider

A South Korean businessman participates in a secret operation against a drug kingpin in Narco-Saints, premiering Friday on Netflix

PREMIERES FRIDAY: Central Park — Kristen Bell returns to the voice cast of the Manhattan-set cartoon in Season 3 — but not as Molly, a role she exited two years ago because she felt she wasn’t Black enough. Fun fact: Thanks to gentrifica tion, there are now parts of Manhattan where Kristen Bell is too Black to sit on a co-op board! (Apple TV+) Cobra Kai — Season 5 finds Terry Silver’s Cobra Kai dojo on the ascendant after their big win at the All Valley Karate Tournament, putting Daniel’s back against the wall to keep the Miyagi-do ethos alive. Seriously, guys, you’ve been nursing this rivalry since before Gal Gadot was alive. At this point, it’s like Lane Meyer still obsessing over the K-12. (Although now that I hear myself say it … ) (Netflix)

Saloum — A group of mercenaries trying to lie low at a holiday camp come smack-dab against the supernatural in a Senegalese fea ture that’s drawing strong notices for its mix of crime drama, spaghetti western and horror elements. What, it would have killed them to fit in a rap battle? (Shudder) Tierra Incógnita — An Argentine teenager searches for his missing parents in a spooky parallel realm, the portal to which just hap pens to be a defunct theme park. Sure, this series export seems like a brazen attempt to capitalize on Stranger Things, but nihilistic props to Disney for finding a way to push the subliminal message that awful shit happens when you stop going to the parks. (Disney+) Wedding Season — Not to be confused with the Indian-American romcom that dropped just a month ago on Netflix, this Wedding Season is a wacky limited series in which a meet-cute at a wedding makes two lovebirds suspects in a multiple homicide. I’m kinda hoping somebody gets the two shows con fused, especially if the Netflix version includes the line “What’s your body count?” (Hulu)

Epic Adventures With Bertie Gregory — The National Geographic explorer travels the world to document the struggles of poor overwhelmed animals against a harsh and un yielding environment. Great, I love watching Charlie Crist interviews! (Disney+)

Gutsy — Hillary and Chelsea Clinton adapt their Book of Gutsy Women into a series of interviews with everyone from Jane Goodall to law-school student Kim Kardashian — the latter of whom reportedly admits on camera that she doesn’t know what “DOJ” stands for. Hey, there’s a defense Mar-a-Lago hasn’t thought of. (Apple TV+)

The Zone: Survival Mission — A trio of South Korean show hosts and their celebrity guests have to navigate escape rooms both real and virtual in a series that’s clearly intended as a more genial Squid Game. Or, as they’d call it up there in North Korea, “a slow Tuesday.” (Hulu)

Chef’s Table: Pizza — This season takes us into the kitchens of pizza makers from Portland to Tokyo, so they can show us which special in gredients make their pies unique. “Pineapple” would be too obvious, so I’m going with “Whichever salsa Dr. Oz likes best.” (Netflix) Grid — South Korea turns utopian sci-fi on its head with a miniseries in which a scientist who saved humanity from annihilation is found to be in cahoots with murderous elements. Run all you want, Fauci; we’re on to you! (Hulu) Ink Master — Two years after getting can celed, the body-art competition has been re vived for a 14th season, with Joel Madden as its new host. Interesting timing, now that an entire generation has had its Good Charlotte tattoos removed. (Paramount+)

Narco-Saints — A South Korean businessman is forced to participate in a secret govern ment operation against a drug kingpin. Parts of the show that are set in Suriname were actually shot in the Dominican Republic — or, as we’re all now going to agree to call it, Pseudiname. (Netflix) [ film + tv ]

PREMIERES THURSDAY: The Anthrax Attacks — Revisit that other national panic of fall 2001 in a documentary that’s out to show how paranoid and manipu lable we all used to be. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to set a bear trap for those 87,000 armed IRS agents. (Netflix) Cars on the Road — The latest entry in Pixar’s Cars franchise is a series that follows Lightning McQueen and Mater on a crosscountry road trip. They’re actually on the lam because Mater killed a Tesla in a drunken rage, but it’s more implied than shown. (Disney+) End of the Road — Queen Latifah and Ludacris co-star in a suspense flick about an unemployed widow who has to protect her kids from a would-be murderer while she’s driving them to a new life on the other side of the U.S. Boy, that’s when threatening to turn the car around really has some torque. (Netflix)

Last Light — Lost alum Matthew Fox headlines a limited series about a global oil catastrophe. The show will run for either five episodes or however long it takes Fox to beat up one of his female co-stars. (Dude, you got outed by a Hobbit. Nobody wants you back.) (Peacock) Pinocchio — Robert Zemeckis and Chris Weitz bring us the latest unnecessary liveaction remake of a Disney classic, with Tom Hanks as Geppetto and Joseph Gordon-Levitt supplying the voice of a CGI Jiminy Cricket. Always remember to let your corporate hubris be your guide! (Disney+)

PREMIERES WEDNESDAY: 101 Scariest Horror Movie Moments of All Time — It’s going to take eight episodes to explain the influence of some of the most shocking and disturbing scenes in cinema. If you’re pressed for time, you can skip an installment and just watch Renee Zellweger’s speeches in Cold Mountain. (Shudder)

Orlando singer Talii just released new single “More Than Friends” | courtesy photo concert preview music

]

On Spotify, her 10 tracks average just over 277,000 streams; “Good to Be Bad” leads the pack, with about 1.3 million streams. Her YouTube channel is a mere blip on the radar, but it offers a unique glimpse into her personal life, as well as her creative process. It also includes a lot of outtakes, remixes, covers and other music that can’t be found any where else. Hard-core fans will obtain much joy from this material.

BY SHELTON HULL O rlando’s own Talii has released about 15 tracks since making her recording debut in 2018, but that’s only a fraction of the number of songs she’s recorded in that time. Her newest single, “More Than Friends,” dropped at the end of August. “It has an Afrobeat bounce to it,” she tells Orlando Weekly. “I worked on it with one of the producers [Phil Mango] on the track. He’s African, and he’s incredible at creating Afrobeats and reg gae. Being a mixed girl with Afro-Caribbean in my blood, this bounce really speaks to my soul.” Her personal growth mirrors her growth as an artist; the themes intertwine in her music. The diversity of her music reflects the diversity of her own life experience. Talii’s birth name, Natalia, means “born on Christmas Day.” That makes sense, since she was — in Winter Park, to be precise. “Talii” is a nickname bestowed by her aunt, and it’s stuck since she was a child. “It’s the name that feels more familiar to me,” she says. “I’ve always wanted my music to be an authentic reflection of who I truly am, so it felt fitting to go by ‘Talii’ as an artist.” Her earliest memories involve listening to artists like Jill Scott, Sade, Prince and Phil Collins, which is certainly a great“Mystart.mom would blast their music in the house every day,” she says, “and I fell in love with it.” Later influences include Doja Cat, Alina Baraz and H.E.R., and those ele ments are more pronounced in her work. “I remember when I was in my early teens all I could think about was being an artist,” she says. “I was obsessed with JoJo’s 2004 and 2006 albums. I wanted to be her so bad! She really was one of the first artists I remember really looking up to and aspiring to be like.” Talii is still getting back into the swing of things as far as live performance goes. Like so many young artists, her prog ress was stalled by the pandemic. But she has been active on stages across Central Florida since 2015, and it’s just a mat ter of time until she resumes her old pace and then begins to speed that up. In the meantime, her focus remains on grow ing her numbers, although she has done just fine already.

When not making music, Talii works in content creation, helping others build their own brands using social media. But her spare time is taken up mostly with raising her young daughter. The child is growing up with a tremendous role model to learn from. Talii has managed to cultivate a viable career with her music, and she’s already put together a solid catalog to continue building on. Someday, her daughter will be old enough to really understand what her mom has accomplished in these years, a time that has already proven to be formative for both of them.

][ local

In this new era of direct engagement between artists and their fans, Talii has used her own personal charisma to cul tivate a loyal fanbase.

She has over 10,000 followers on Instagram, 35,000 listeners on Spotify, and even a couple thousand extra on SoundCloud, which is really just a back-up platform for her.

Being a city of tourists, it’s always said that Orlando has no sense of history —

FIGUREHEAD IMMORTALIZEDGETS

The museum will host a series of local music-related events around this exhibition running through December. But this week end’s kickoff will feature an opening bash (Sept. 9, 6-9 p.m.) and a free panel discussion (Sept. 10, 1-2:30 p.m.) to tell the story of the Orlando music scene during the 1980s-1990s Figurehead era through the personal lenses of the movers of that time, including Faherty himself, Shayni Rae (Faherty’s partner in Sapphire Supper Club) and veteran musician Ken Chiodini.

Few figures are as foundational to our music scene as Jim Faherty. From 1985 to 2001, he essentially laid the groundwork to make Orlando a destination on the national indie-rock touring circuit with his concert promotion company, Figurehead. By book ing the likes of Black Flag, Sonic Youth, Jonathan Richman and countless others, Faherty became the godfather of our indie scene, and Orlando would likely be a cultural backwater without his work, passion and personality.Beingacity of tourists and transients for so long, it’s always been said that Orlando has no sense of history. Any active local can tell you what a shame that is. It’s especial ly unfortunate for Orlando’s underground music scene, which has more creativ ity, depth and edge than most realize, locals included. Spotlighting that, in case you hadn’t noticed, is one of the raisons d’être for this column.

Zeta, Edhochuli, Moxiebeat, Gillian Carter, Dearest: This bill packs some of the most modern and original takes on heavy music right now. First, no one is pushing that envelope with as much tropical intensity as South Florida’s Zeta. But Pittsburgh’s Edhochuli also take punk rock into deep progressive waters with their dense and complex sound. California’s Moxiebeat are a Filipinx band whose ferocious hardcore verges on noise rock. Local heat will come from post-hardcore leaders Gillian Carter and mood maestro Dearest. Planning for Burial, Couples Therapy, Haize, Bloom Dream: This one’s for those who like it thick and moody. Pennsylvania one-man act Planning for Burial mines the atmospheric hinterlands of heavy music, merging shoegaze, metal and slowcore into an enveloping monolith of sorrow. Orlando’s Couples Therapy are also highly textural and stylistically diverse, ranging from dreamy to heavy, sometimes both simultaneously. Miami’s Bloom Dream are an amalgam of post-hardcore inten sity, emo feels and shoegaze aura. And new local project Haize impresses with haunted avant-soul. Rolo Tomassi, Cryptodira, The Callous Daoboys: This three-headed hydra comes straight from metal’s pro gressive flank. Between the extreme and dimensional onslaught of U.K. headliners Rolo Tomassi, the progressive death metal of New York’s Cryptodira and the dizzy ing technical frenzy of Atlanta’s the Callous Daoboys, it’s gonna be a tornado of math and screaming that will fry your nerves. If you’re coming out, be safe, be cool.

Well, in Faherty’s very notable case, downtown’s Orange County Regional History Center is about to make a momentous step in rectifying that with new exhibition Figurehead: Music & Mayhem in Orlando’s Underground Opening Sept. 10, the feature exhibition won’t simply enshrine Faherty’s legacy in the official catalog of local history, but will also make Orlando’s cultural record deep er and cooler. In making the Figurehead archives part of its permanent collection and curating relics from that seminal time for display here, the museum is turning a major part of contemporary Orlando history from local lore into institutional heritage. For the museum’s part, they’ll earn more street cred with this stylish exhibition than probably any other before it. And unlike the recent big splashes over at the Orlando Museum of Art, this one’s certifiably legit (McDonald’s grift notwithstanding — IYKYK).

Fabulous Weapon: The In-Between Series usually stays true to its downtown art gallery setting with avant-garde music. But this time, it’s smearing on some red drugstore lipstick and getting a little dangerous. Orlando art-rock couple Fabulous Weapon are a rising young act that just released a seductive record (Highway Killerz) that oozes sex and crime. (7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 12, CityArts, $5)

Last time Emmy-winning comedian Amy Schumer was in the news, the occasion was her co-hosting a rather unique installment of the Oscars (and emerging unscathed!). Schumer was in prime form, introducing herself with “I’m Amy Schumer, or as they know me in Hollywood, ‘Melissa McCarthy said no.’” — before going on to roast Will Smith, Leonardo DiCaprio, Aaron Sorkin and Adam McKay. All that funny would be for naught in the wake of “the slap” and that’s a damn shame, because Schumer is too talented to be overshadowed by masculine celebrity histrionics. She’s out on her headlining “Whore Tour” now, working stages all over North America and packing houses to hear her revealing and frequently risqué comedy. Aside from the tour, you can also catch recent Schumer work in the form of Life & Beth, her autobiographical Hulu show that the New Yorker dubbed a “mom com.” Or you can peep her for a few crucial minutes (playing herself, kind of) in Season 2 of Only Murders in the Building alongside Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez. But it’s stand-up where Schumer truly shines, so get thee straight to the source.

Figurehead: Music & Mayhem is a look at Orlando music through the 1980s and ’90s, with a particular focus on the scene that coalesced around maverick concert promoters Figurehead. Orlando music luminaries of the past, present and future are sure to be out in force for the Opening Bash at the Center 7-9 p.m. (VIP tickets allow for a crucial extra hour starting at 6 p.m.) The ticket nets you first eyes on the exhibition and a full night of resulting bragging rights, lots of good company in the form of the aforementioned luminaries, live music from the Green Today, eats and drinks and DJ Bonilla spinning. WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 7 Action Bronson No sleep ’til … Orlando! Rapper Action Bronson recently wrapped a European tour with Earl Sweatshirt and Alchemist, and now he’s out again on his own domestic headlining jaunt, coming to the City Beautiful this week. The MC-cheftelevision personality triple threat (we’ll belatedly throw author and actor into the mix) released his latest album, the outerlimits-bound Cocodrillo Turbo, in April, so expect some way-out sounds from that record live. Bronson claims, perhaps tongue in cheek (perhaps not), that the album is dubbed for his nickname when he bodyboards and gets in the zone, further saying that the entire album is abstractly inspired by water. The man’s renaissance tendencies and energy seemingly know no limits, as he’s also recently dropped his own extra virgin olive oil in collaboration with Grove and Vine. Now that’s tour merch we can definitely use. 7 p.m., House of Blues, Disney Springs, houseofblues. com, $35-$80. — Matthew Moyer Fulci

AMY FRIDAYSCHUMER,NIGHTATHARDROCKLIVE

The opening weekend of the History Center’s ambitious deep dive into Orlando music history is upon us, and you can get a sneak peek a day early and party like a (local) rock star on Friday.

Though there are likely thousands of bands named after the undead ghouls that populate the films of Italian horror master Lucio Fulci, this Italian death-metal trio deftly sidestepped them all and paid direct homage to the source with their moniker. And what’s in a name? Well, Fulci create shambling, gory zombie-metal that lives up to the auteur’s blood-soaked visions. The band’s most recent album, Exhumed Information, focuses in on the director’s 1991 film Voices From Beyond for lyrical and musical inspiration, and they’re sure to turn the Will’s stage into a pulpy grindhouse. Support comes from Rhythm of Fear, Trash Panda and High Pressure.

Built to Spill We may have been getting lost in end-of-summer reveries of late and spun some Treepeople — Built to Spill mainman Doug Martsch’s gloriously rough-hewn old indie project — but Martsch himself has no time for nostalgia. He’s on the road right now with his much more well-known, critically lauded concern Built to Spill, taking new album When the Wind Forgets Your Name straight to the people. It’s the band’s eighth album and first of new material in about seven years. To throw another number at you, it’s also their first on Sub-Pop, a natural home if there ever was one. At this point in the band’s history, Martsch is the sole remaining permanent member, using different collaborators for each new record; this time he conscripted members of Brazilian psych outfit Oruã (also the support act on this here tour), and the results are earthy and driving, with just enough weirdo flair to leave you guessing. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): “What good is it if you read Plato but never clean your toilet?” writes author Alice Munro. To which I add, “What good is it if you have brilliant breakthroughs and intriguing insights but never translate them into practical changes in your daily rhythm?” I’m not saying you are guilty of these sins, Leo. But I want to ensure that you won’t be guilty of these sins in the coming weeks. It’s crucial to your long-term future that you devote quality time to being earthy and grounded and pragmatic. Be as effective as you are smart.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): When you Geminis are at your best, you don’t merely tolerate dualities. You enjoy and embrace them. You work with them eagerly. While many non-Geminis regard oppositions and paradoxes as at best inconvenient and at worst obstructive, you often find how the apparent polarities are woven together and complementary. That’s why so many of you are connoisseurs of love that’s both tough and tender. You can be effective in seemingly contradictory situations that confuse and immobilize others. All these skills of yours should come in handy during the coming weeks. Use them to the hilt.

orlandoweekly.com ● SEPT. 7-13, 2022 ● ORLANDO WEEKLY 53

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): There are blessings in every abyss. You, of all the signs in the zodiac, have the greatest capacity to find those blessings and make them yours. Likewise, there is an abyss in each blessing. You, of all the signs, have the most power to make sure your experiences in the abyss don’t detract from but enhance the blessing. In the coming weeks, dear Scorpio, take maximum advantage of these superpowers of yours. Be a master of zeroing in on the opportunities seeded in the dilemmas. Show everyone how to home in on and enjoy the delights in the darkness. Be an inspirational role model as you extract redemption from the messes.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): I have always felt you Capricorns are wise to commune with rocks, dirt, mud, sand and clay. I think you should regularly touch the actual earth with your hands and bare feet. If I’m out hiking with a Capricorn friend, I might urge them to sniff blooming mushrooms and lean down to kiss the exposed roots of trees. Direct encounters with natural wonders are like magic potions and miracle medicine for you. Moreover, you flourish when you nurture close personal relationships with anything that might be described as foundational. This is always true, but will be extra true for you in the coming weeks. Your words of power are kernel, core, gist, marrow and keystone.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): The coming weeks will be a favorable time to dream up creative solutions to problems that haven’t fully materialized yet. Then you can apply your discoveries as you address problems that already exist. In other words, dear Aquarius, I’m telling you that your uncanny facility for glimpsing the future can be useful in enhancing your life in the present. Your almost psychic capacity to foretell the coming trends will be instrumental as you fix glitches in the here and now.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): In the coming weeks, logic may be of only partial use to you. Information acquired through your senses might prove less than fully adequate, as well. On the other hand, your talents for feeling deeply and tapping into your intuition can provide you with highly accurate intelligence. Here’s a further tip to help you maximize your ability to understand reality: Visit a river or creek or lake. Converse with the fish and frogs and turtles and beavers. Study the ways of the crabs and crayfish and eels. Sing songs to the dragonflies and whirligig beetles and lacewings.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): “To love oneself is hard work,” declares Virgo author Hanif Abdurraqib. He adds, “But I think it becomes harder when you realize that you’re actually required to love multiple versions of yourself that show up without warning throughout a day, throughout a week, throughout a month, throughout a life.” Let’s make that your inspirational strategy, Virgo. The coming weeks will be a favorable time to refine, deepen and invigorate your love for all your selves. It may be hard work, but I bet it will also be fun and exhilarating.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): One of my favorite Sagittarians is practical mystic Caroline Myss, who was born with sun and Mercury and ascendant in Sagittarius. In accordance with current astrological omens, I’ve gathered six of her quotes to serve your current needs. No. 1: There isn’t anything in your life that cannot be changed. No. 2: When you do not seek or need approval, you are at your most powerful. No. 3: Healing comes from gathering wisdom from past actions and letting go of the pain that the education cost you. No. 4: The soul always knows what to do to heal itself. No. 5: What serves your spirit enhances your body. What diminishes your spirit diminishes your body. No. 6: What is in you is stronger than what is out there to defeat you.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): As a Taurus, you are always wise to be reverent toward your five senses. They are your glorious treasures, your marvelous superpowers, your sublime assets. In the coming weeks, they will serve you even better than usual. As you deploy them with all your amazement and appreciation unfurled, they will boost your intelligence. They will heighten your intuition in ways that guide you to good decisions. You will tune into interesting truths that had previously been hidden from you. I suspect your sensory apparatus will be so sharp and clear that it will work almost as extrasensory powers.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): Author Jean Frémon says Cancerian naturalist Henry David Thoreau “always had two notebooks — one for facts, and the other for poetry. But Thoreau had a hard time keeping them apart, as he often found facts more poetic than his poems.” Judging from your current astrological omens, Cancerian, I suspect you are entering a time when facts will be even more poetic than usual. If you open yourself to the magic of reality, the mundane details of everyday life will delight you and appeal to your sense of wonder. Routine events will veer toward the marvelous. Can you bear to experience so much lyrical grace? I think so.

ARIES (March 21-April 19): Aries-born Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was one of the greatest basketball players ever. He excelled at most aspects of the game. Some experts say his rebounding was only average for a player his size — 7 feet, 2 inches. But he is still the thirdbest rebounder in National Basketball Association history. And he played for 20 years, until age 40. What tips might Abdul-Jabbar have for you now? Here’s a suggestion from him that aligns with your current astrological omens: “Work on those parts of your game that are fundamentally weak.” The implication is that you have a lot of strengths, and now it’s time to raise up the rest of your skill set.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Here’s how to be the best Libra you can be in the next three weeks. No. 1: Make sure your cool attention to detail never gets chilly. Warm it up now and then. Invite your heart to add its counsel to your head’s observations. Tenderize your objectivity. No. 2: Always be willing to be puzzled. Always be entertained and educated by your puzzlement. Proceed on the theory that nothing ever changes unless somebody is puzzled. No. 3: Practice, practice, practice the art of moderation. Do so with the intention of using it as a flexible skill rather than an unthinking habit. No. 4: Applying the Goldilocks principle will be essential. Everything must be just right: neither too much nor too little; neither overly grand nor overly modest.

A: Telling someone to disengage romantically is easy, BLABBERS. Actually disengaging romanti cally is hard. I’ve heard from so many people over the years who were struggling to smother romantic feelings for lovers who did them wrong. People pining away for exes who fucked their best friends, emptied their checking accounts, and refused to respond to their texts. So, while I could tell you to adjust your romantic expectations downward while you keep fucking this boy, the odds of you being able to keep your romantic feelings in check — much less smother them — while he’s hosting birthday parties for you and sucking your dick are close to zero. If you keep seeing this guy, the emotional hits (“I don’t want a relationship,” “I feel no spark”) will keepSo,coming.what’sup with this guy? If he acts like a boy friend and fucks like a boyfriend, why doesn’t he want to be a boyfriend? Maybe he’s still exploring his sexuality, like he told you, and he worries that labeling the relation ship, e.g., becoming boyfriend-official, is going to limit him. He is a recent refugee from Straightland, after all, and most residents of Straightland have no concept of romantic relationships that aren’t sexually exclusive. (Except for straight people who read my column and listen to the “Lovecast”!)

Q: I’m a gay boy in the big city. I had a threesome with two married guys and it didn’t go well, to put it mildly … Go to Savage.Love to read the rest of this question; send questions of your own to Dan at questions@savagelove.net.

orlandoweekly.com ● SEPT. 7-13, 2022 ● ORLANDO WEEKLY 55

Just because he’s out doesn’t mean he’s up to speed. Or maybe he’s not gay. You say he just came out, BLABBER, but you don’t say what he came out as. You also say the sex has been great, and I believe you. Guys sometimes discover they like having sex with men and then assume they must be gay; they see enjoying sex with other men as disqualifying where straightness is concerned. And so it is. But it’s not disqualify ing where bisexuality is concerned. So, if this guy came out as gay because he thought he had to be gay because otherwise he wouldn’t enjoy your dick so much, his lack of romantic feelings for you — if coupled with ongoing romantic and/or sexual attractions to women — could mean he’s bisexual and heteroromantic (BAH). It’s a thing. BAH guys can confuse gay men; while some BAH guys don’t want anything to do with their male sex partners before or after sex, other BAH guys are open to being “buds.” These BAH guys — BAH guys who wanna hang out, go on dates, host your birthday party — not only confuse gay dudes, they some times break our hearts. Or maybe this guy knows you could be boyfriends without being exclusive (maybe you explained that to him) or maybe he’s gay and not into you the same way you’re into him (also a thing, and a sad one). But whatever his issues might be, BLABBERS, you should see other people while he explores/ sucks/fucks his way through those issues. And if hanging out with him right now is too painful, don’t hang out with him, don’t socialize with him, don’t take turns sitting on dicks with him. He was honest and direct with you, BLABBERS, and you should be just as honest and direct with him. Getting the boyfriend treatment from a guy who not only insists he isn’t your boyfriend but also doesn’t have any romantic feelings for you is going to make you miserable if you can’t disengage romantically, BLABBERS, which you most likely can’t. Tell him you’re not angry, you don’t hate him and you still like him very much. And that’s the problem: You like him way more than he likes you. As much as you enjoy his company, as much as you enjoy his dick, continuing to date or fuck him means feeding your self-esteem into an emotional shredder.

P.S. Congrats on your sobriety — and while I hope your parents apologized to you at some point, I’m guessing they haven’t, seeing as they aren’t just evangelicals, but narcissists to boot.

Q: I’m a 29-year-old gay man just shy of five years sober. I’ve had to do a lot of work on myself in recovery to accept and love myself after being dragged to conversion therapy when I was a teen ager by my narcissistic evangelical parents. I met a guy in AA in May who at the time was nine months sober. His sobriety coincided with him coming out. He’s 27 years old and still unpacking a lot. He broke up with a girlfriend a few months before we met and I’m the first guy he’s ever dated.  I was initially hesitant about getting involved with him, given these parameters, but I went for it any way. The first two months were great. We had great chemistry and great sex, we went on dates, etc. A month ago he hit me with, “I don’t want to be in a relationship as I’m exploring my sexuality.” My initial reaction was to step back and assume this was the end. However, nothing changed. He continued to initiate affection and even threw me a birthday party at his home with decorations he bought. A week later he hits me with, “I’ve lost the romantic spark but I still want to hang out, have sex and go on dates.” I’m mainly just thrown by the lack of alignment between his words and actions. Should I just accept this relationship for whatever it is and date other people? The sex is great, but I feel very romantically involved — four months in — and I’m not sure it’s wise to get more involved.
