» Orlando marked 100 years of Lake Eola swan boats Orlando rang in 100 years of its iconic Lake Eola swan boats with a “Swantennial,” while the lake’s living residents passed their health checks with flying colors. In honor of the first-ever boat launch in 1925, the city unveiled a special gold-wrapped swan boat to commemorate the lake’s history. The swan-hosted trips around the lake originally began with just two pedal-powered boats that could carry up to two dozen passengers. The idea came from Maitland resident Mrs. Bowers, who requested permission to add a swan boat dock just two months before the first launch. The Swantennial comes just days after the living birds who inhabit the lake received passing health checks during their annual swan roundup. Veterinarians and volunteers provided medical check-ups and well-being assessments to the more than 50 resident swans.
» Waymo’s self-driving taxis are coming to Orlando
Self-driving taxis from the Alphabet-owned company Waymo are coming to the streets of Orlando early next year, the company announced. This will make Orlando one of the first 10 cities in the country to offer the autonomous vehicle service (similar to an Uber or Lyft, but without an actual driver in the front seat). Waymo’s so-called “robotaxis,” powered by artificial intelligence, are already in operation in Atlanta, Austin, Phoenix, Los Angeles and San Francisco. As of May, the AI company — owned by Google’s parent company — has provided more than 10 million rides since it launched driverless trips for the public in 2020. Investigations into the safety of Waymo vehicles have shown mixed findings (they’ve issued recalls and have commissioned two independent safety audits), although Waymo itself touts a commitment to ensuring its vehicles are safe for communities. Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer praised the company’s decision to expand to Orlando, which a city spokesperson confirmed city staff did not necessarily approve through any official process, but welcome all the same. The company, at the same time, announced plans to expand to Dallas, Houston, Miami and San Antonio in the “coming weeks.” The cost of a Waymo ride can vary based on factors such as distance and duration, but it will likely cost more than an Uber or Lyft, even sans the tip you should be giving your driver if you’re taking a ride through one of the latter two.
» Tampa photojournalist arrested outside of ICE detention center in Miami More than two dozen people were arrested outside a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Miami on Saturday, Nov. 22 — including Tampa photojournalist Dave Decker (who’s shot for Orlando Weekly and our sibling publication Creative Loafing). Decker was on assignment for three outlets that weekend, covering an anti-ICE protest action by Sunshine Movement, which saw many of its members arrested after blocking the entrance to the facility on the southeastern edge of the Florida Everglades. In a social media video, Miami-Dade police told a videographer that the protesters were being arrested for “obstruction of justice.” Records from Miami-Dade County say that Decker was charged with trespassing on property after warning and resisting an officer without violence to his person. Decker was released on bond early Monday, Nov. 24, and told CL at the time he was working to recover his vehicle and gear from a Miami impound lot. CL editor in chief Ray Roa created a GoFundMe for Decker to help cover his legal costs and offer other practical aid. As of publication, the GoFundMe has raised more than $25,000 for Decker.
» Florida AG to investigate Campbell’s after VP’s ‘poor people’ comments
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier said last week the state’s Consumer Protection division is launching an investigation into canned soup company Campbell’s alleged use of lab-grown meat (a claim that the company, for the record, denies). The announcement comes as a former Campbell’s employee launches legal action against the company following a meeting with the vice president that turned into an hour-long rant mocking “poor people,” calling Indian employees “idiots,” admitting to working while high on edibles and using bioengineered meat. Robert Garza, a former cybersecurity analyst from Michigan, was working for Campbell’s Camden, New Jersey, headquarters when he met with vice president and chief information security officer Martin Bally for a standard salary discussion. Garza recorded the conversation that ultimately left him feeling “pure disgust,” he told Detroit’s Local 4 News. “We have shit for fucking poor people. Who buys our shit? I don’t buy Campbell’s products barely anymore,” Bally is allegedly heard saying. “It’s
not healthy now that I know what the fuck’s in it.” He also claimed the meat used in Campbell’s products is fake. “Bioengineered meat — I don’t wanna eat a piece of chicken that came from a 3-D printer. Do you?” A Campbell’s spokesperson has said Bally is “temporarily on leave while we conduct an investigation.”
» DeSantis asked Legislature to punish inhumane dog breeders Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis proposed new penalties against certain dog breeders and animal abusers last week, hoping to pass more anti-animal cruelty legislation before his term is over. For the 2026 session, DeSantis wants the Legislature to impose a statewide dog breeder license, target unethical dog breeding, and tighten penalties for Floridians who abuse animals in front of children. According to the governor, the measure would require the Department of Business and Professional Regulation to issue statewide dog breeder licenses to better “hold them accountable” for abusive conditions. This could include overbreeding female dogs, overcrowded breeding areas, a lack of veterinary care or exposure to harsh environments. The proposal asks pet stores to offer local shelters spaces to put dogs up for adoption before the space is used to sell dogs from “puppy mills,” which are large, for-profit centers designed for quick breeding under poor conditions. Other suggestions include establishing a hotline to crack down on unethical breeding practices, ensuring veterinarians give consumers accurate information about dogs, and increased penalties for those who abuse animals in front of a minor.

Dog parks can be great for exercise and socialization—but they also come with risks many pet parents don’t expect. Beyond fleas and ticks, veterinarians see a wide range of issues related to dog-park visits throughout the year.
Injuries are among the most common problems. Even friendly play can escalate, leading to sprains, bite wounds, torn toenails, or ligament injuries. Shy, anxious, or smaller dogs can become overwhelmed in large, unpredictable groups, increasing their risk of being hurt.
Dog parks also create opportunities for contagious illness, including:
• Kennel cough
• Canine influenza
• Giardia and intestinal parasites from shared water
Veterinarians also frequently treat “mystery ingestion” cases like dogs eating rocks, sticks, food scraps, toxic plants, or feces. These can cause vomiting, diarrhea,
or even intestinal blockages.
Behavioral issues can develop too. One bad experience like being chased, pinned, or overwhelmed can lead to long term fear or reactivity toward other dogs.
To keep your dog safe at the park:
• Supervise every interaction
• Bring your own water bowl
• Watch for signs of overstimulation
• Leave if the environment feels chaotic
• Keep your dog fully vaccinated and on preventatives
For dog owners who want socialization without the unpredictability, WPVET Playcamp offers a safe, controlled environment supervised by trained veterinary professionals. It’s a great option for dogs who benefit from structured play, closer monitoring, and expert oversight.
DOG PARKS CAN BE FUN, BUT INFORMED DECISIONS HELP KEEP YOUR PET SAFE, HEALTHY, AND HAPPY.
FHP ARRESTS TWO FOR ‘AGGRESSIVELY’ CHALKING CROSSWALK
The Florida Department of Transportation claimed it would cost about $1,000 to return the Pulse crosswalk to its original state
BY MCKENNA SCHUELER
AFlorida Highway Patrol officer arrested two people last Sunday afternoon for allegedly “defacing” the formerly rainbow-colored crosswalk outside of Orlando’s Pulse nightclub — the latest in a string of questionable arrests.
According to court records, on Nov. 23, 28-year-old James Houchins and 29-year-old
Austin “Bubba” Trahan were caught on video “aggressively” chalking the word “Resist” onto the crosswalk, which is owned and maintained by the state Department of Transportation.
The video footage came from the transportation department’s Regional Communications Center, which notified Florida Highway Patrol of the chalkers and dispatched an officer to the
The rainbow-striped crosswalk, originally approved by FDOT in 2017, was in part established to memorialize the victims and survivors of the 2016 mass shooting at Pulse, a gay nightclub. Local elected officials have also said the crosswalk’s rainbow colors were meant to enhance safety, not undermine it.
A pricey pressure-wash
Under Florida statutes, property damage-related criminal mischief is subject to a third-degree felony if the cost of the damage is believed to exceed $1,000. Otherwise, if the cost is less, it’s punishable as a misdemeanor.
FHP officer Christopher Gonzalez, the arresting officer, claimed in his arrest report that restoring the crosswalk to its “original state” — post-“Resist” — would cost the state an estimated $1,004.
Tellingly, Gonzalez added that previous costs for “repairs” and washing down the crosswalk “have been over $1,500.” Protesters against the state’s decision to remove the rainbow colors of the crosswalk have chalked over it multiple times since August.
“It’s an intimidation tactic,” Houchins argued, adding that to him, it seems like the state is trying to “fabricate a crime.”
“Our attorney argued that it’s water-soluble chalk, and, you know, it washes away in the rain,” he explained. The judge, in response to the argument last week, agreed there was no probable cause for the felony, and reduced the charge to a misdemeanor for damage costing less than $200.
area to arrest them.
Both Houchins and Trahan were arrested by the officer last week on a third-degree felony charge of criminal mischief for defacing the crosswalk — a piece of roadway that the state formally deems a “traffic control device.”
That charge, punishable by up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine, was reduced by a judge to a misdemeanor. According to Houchins himself, however, the state would have to formally file that misdemeanor charge in order for that to go through, and he told Orlando Weekly he doesn’t believe that will happen.
“My understanding with that is, if the state wants to charge even at a misdemeanor level, they have to go in and officially refile those charges. And just like the other four who have been arrested, they’re not going to do that,” Houchins said in a phone call last Tuesday.
At least four people have similarly been arrested for “defacing” the crosswalk outside Pulse since August, following the state’s decision to paint over the rainbow colors of the crosswalk in the dead of night. State transportation officials claimed the goal was to ensure roadways were not being used for “political” or “ideological” purposes. Florida Gov. DeSantis also later claimed the colors posed a “safety hazard.”
“This crosswalk means so much more,” Houchins told the Weekly.“I mean, yes, it’s LGBTQ. Yes, it’s our community. But for what it stands for, with the memorial and the 49 people lost.”
Houchins told the Weekly that he and Trahan were at the crosswalk because they’d heard that FHP had “ripped” Puerto Rican and rainbow-colored flags from the grassy area outside Pulse nightclub that Monday morning — planted there by community members — and that they’d pressure-washed the nearby curb, sidewalk and formerly rainbow crosswalk of chalk, too.
The pair subsequently took it upon themselves to replace the flags and re-chalk the crosswalk with the understanding that, at worst, they’d face a citation for doing so. “We had already spoken to the lieutenant several times before the Highway Patrol, and [were] informed that, you know, it’s a citation, it’s not an arrest.”
Gonzalez, a FHP trooper, later found the two sitting at a Dunkin across the street from Pulse, where they were directed to “hang tight” before their arrest, according to Houchins. “The two individuals stated they did not chalk or deface the crosswalk but were only chalking the nearby sidewalk,” Gonzalez wrote in their arrest report.
Although Houchins doesn’t have any personal connection to the Pulse tragedy himself, he said what the state did in painting over the crosswalk — from rainbow colors back to standard black-and-white — “was a blatant attack on the LGBTQ community.”
“Continuing to show up, continuing to show them that we’re not backing down — we’re not going to stop that,” he said. “We’re not allowing their intimidation to stop us from being who we are.”

Our top 10 so-Orlando gifts
BY EMMY BAILEY, CHLOE GREENBERG, MATTHEW MOYER AND JESSICA BRYCE YOUNG
Orlando, are you beginning to eye your holiday shopping lists with a heavy sigh of dread? Forget about the big-box shops and chuck your phone in the toilet (maybe do that anyway just to get away from all the AI), because there are plenty of quirky, unique and creative options for presents that are locally rooted, eclectic and — crucially — fun. Here are 10 items for all tastes that see Santa repping Orlando in a festively fervent fashion.
1. Born Human: The Life and Music of Death’s Chuck Schuldiner, David E. Gehlke (Decibel Books, 2025)
Though it’s been a matter of gospel among Florida metal maniacs for many years now, Born Human, the new fully authorized biography of Orlando metal magus Chuck Schuldiner, sets the record
straight in gloriously inky splendor: The template for Florida death metal was first bashed out in an unassuming garage in Altamonte Springs by guitarist Schuldiner and two confederate degenerates. That trio would eventually morph into tech-death overlords, ahem, Death, and that’s only the beginning of the story. This account of the far-too-short life of Schuldiner — he passed away from brain cancer in 2001 — was published with the cooperation of Schuldiner’s friends and family, with tons of in-depth interviews and unseen photos. Get yourself some civic pride on the darker side. (decibelmagazine.com)
2. Endless Cherry Pie mead from Zymarium Forget showing up at a family or friends gift-giving session with some impersonal bottle of wine from a big-box or liquor store. Keep
your dollars local and present your giftee instead with an elegantly bottled mead from Zymarium. The Mills 50 meadery and taproom has several holiday blends made in-house and bottled with gothic grandeur worthy of the Ghost of Christmas Future. The tastes that summon up the most vividly cozy holiday memories are Endless Cherry Pie and Endless Apple Pie. The honey-based adult beverages are light on the palate, medium on the alcohol by volume, and sure to be a hit. (1121 N. Mills Ave., zymarium.com)
3. Jon Napoles painting on glass
Jon Napoles began making his unique and eccentric art over a decade ago, after leaving a job flipping houses (a noble transition, if we may say so). It was a particularly poetic move in that his paintings

eschew canvases and instead use reclaimed household windowpanes, on which Napoles paints florid and rough-hewn renderings of a fantastical world populated by abstract and otherworldly cats, birds, horses, stars and whiskey bottles. He’s a longtime local favorite and a regular at markets like Indie-Folkfest and Grandma Party Bazaar (happening next Sunday!), but if you miss out, try contacting him via his website. (jonnapart.com)
4. Doug Rhodehamel Fishmas ornament
For years, a Rhodehamel fish on your holiday tree has been an IYKYK badge of honor for Orlando cognoscenti. Now everyone can get in on the fun as Doug democratizes his sustainable vision and offers the masses a chance to decorate with extra joy — the joy of knowing your ornaments are bringing new life to discarded materials. This year, they’re popping up in various colors, shapes and materials (metal, wire, plastic, cardboard) at not-so-secret locations around town — follow Rhodehamel on Instagram to see where they’ll be swimming next. (instagram.com/dougrhodehamel)
5. Planet Moon Rock Craft Club
Now, on the other hand, if you have your own vision for giftable holiday ornaments, book into Planet Moon Rock’s December Craft Club. From 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11, at Creative Jane Art Studio (1781 W. Fairbanks Ave., Winter Park), you can make the hanging trinkets, tree toppers, and garlands of your own very weird and hyperspecific Orlando dreams. Planet Moon Rock will provide expert guidance and hot glue along with felt, ribbon, paper, glitter, rhinestones, pompoms, googly eyes and the rest. If you can’t make it to the club night, may we suggest Planet Moon Rock’s signature Bedazzled Gloopy Lighters? Nothing better to light the Yule Log. (planetmoonrock. com; creativejaneart.com)
6.
Beefy King T-shirt
Snagging a Beefy King tee isn’t just about getting a shirt, it’s about owning a piece of Orlando history. Beefy King has been dishing up its legendary (and affordable) steamed roast-beef sandwiches in the Milk District since 1968, and through three generations of ownership, has stayed stubbornly true to its retro, no-frills tasty charm. This T-shirt and related merch is only sold in the restaurant; it comes in several colors, but the red-and-green Christmas version is especially tasty. For locals or transplants alike, it’s an easy way to rep some civic pride while grabbing a sandwich where Orlandoans have for decades. (424 N. Bumby Ave., beefykingorlando.com)
7. Winter Wonderland cocktail glasses
Ring-a-ding-ding in the holiday season, pally, with this set of delightfully kitschy cocktail glasses from Central Florida hepcats Atomic Drinkware. Renowned for painstakingly hand-painted Libby glasses — made in the U.S.A., no less — that are both on the right side of spooky and retro, this is the best of Atomic’s diverse slate of seasonal offerings. Adorned with artfully rendered pink and fuchsia “mid-century style” aluminum Christmas trees — the type that Charlie Brown scorned but we now covet — these Collins glasses are perfect for mulled wine, cocktails or even maybe a glass of milk for Santa. You can catch Atomic at area markets all over this holiday season. (atomicdrinkware.com)
8. Local landmark art prints from Sandhill Supply Co.
A mere $20 will nab you a gorgeous and sleek pen-and-ink stylized art print of the iconic facade of Park Ave CDs or one of a handful of other iconic locations from print mavens Sandhill Supply Co. Rendered with minimalist flair and clean lines, these illustrations are printed by (also) locals Rebel Reprints. Sandhill, the creative outlet of Ashlley and Kevin Lemke, specializes in whimsical and precise design work of familiar places and things. And yes, while you can easily nab these on the internet, we recommend instead you make a trip to Framework Coffee (1201 N. Mills Ave.) where these are sold in-person, and where you can browse all of Sandhill’s offerings, including stickers, pins, keychains and the like. (sandhillsupplyco.com)
9. “Welcome to Orlando” coasters from Freehand Goods
These “Welcome to Orlando” coasters from Freehand Goods bring a little artisan charm to any table and double as a small, thoughtful gift for someone who loves the City Beautiful. Made from full-grain vegetable-tanned leather and sealed with a water-resistant finish, these are built to last. Handmade at Freehand’s College Park shop, each coaster carries a bit of home-brewed authenticity — down to the (kinda) Disney-ish font. Whether someone’s a longtime local or new to town, these coasters make a subtle but meaningful gift. (2445 Edgewater Drive, freehandgoods.com)
10. Tickets to The Office Holiday Party Musical Extravaganza Show at the Ren
A tumultuous season for the Renaissance Theatre Co. is wrapping up, and a holiday miracle is on the horizon: a theater lover’s perfect
holiday gift has arrived. The Ren’s annual immersive Office Holiday Party Musical Extravaganza Show, a tradition since 2021, is set to kick off Friday, Dec. 5, blending art, adult-only energy and good ol’ holiday spirit. Attendees will be thrown into the Gripp & Pfister holiday workplace get-together — set up with name tags, jingle juice and all — to witness the chaotic characters and adult-only happenings around the office. (Maybe add in a code enforcement meta-storyline and you’ve got yourself some extra-spiked eggnog.) It’s immersive, it’s surprising and, as they say, you’ll never see the same show twice. After the show, the afterparty A Holiday Drag Extravaganza: A Very Gay Christmas Carol brings dancers, drag performers and more naughty entertainment to the space. The show runs select nights throughout December at the former Fringe ArtSpace at 54 W. Church St. downtown. (rentheatre.com)

LET’S TALK ABOUT IT
Immersive art installation Her Art Works sparks conversation and understanding of AIDS’ impact on
Black women
BY AZLYN CATO
“When you think of HIV and AIDS, what picture of a person comes into your mind? Does that person ever look like you? It doesn’t, right? Like you don’t even think about your friends. You always think about somebody that’s in a different, unfortunate situation than you are. But HIV sounds like you, it sounds like me, sounds like her.”
After learning that Black women in Orange County were 12 times more likely to contract HIV than their white counterparts, Chianna Collins was tasked with raising awareness by doing more than just billboards or bus wraps. Instead of traditional boring marketing, as a Black woman herself, she wanted to incorporate music and pop-up testing to make her campaign more culturally driven.
Inspired by the Trap Music Museum in Atlanta, Collins devised an immersive art installation to spotlight the stories of Black women and address the issue of HIV prevention. However, when she took this idea to CityArts in downtown Orlando, she was turned down.
Despite her frustrations, as a co-creator of the BLK Room Project, Collins refused to let this setback get in the way of the work she was trying to do. She decided to create her own installation, Her Art Works: An Ode to Black Women, bringing her vision to life.
Her stories are immersively told one by one, following visitors from room to room. The experience consists of an interview with a Black woman living with HIV, whose story is segmented and connected to the individual artwork featured in the exhibit.
The free event also features photographers and other artists, whose pieces are displayed throughout the venue, along with a DJ, free food and mocktails, and live testimonials.
With the event’s third year fast approaching on Thursday, Collins tells Orlando Weekly that Her Art Works has reached full capacity every year so far.
“It’s really a dope concept, because obviously, nobody’s doing it,” Collins says. “We do it in honor of World AIDS Day. And usually it’s somber, like
is shameful, stigma is people not wanting to touch something because someone has HIV, and people being afraid to share things with them, and it’s always only in the gay community. So that’s the stigma that we are aware of, that we see in society.” But there’s another side to stigmas when it comes to being gay in the Black community, one that Collins says people don’t often talk about, because it’s labeled as a stigma when it shouldn’t be. She points to Miami, where 100% of the new HIV cases among Black women were contracted through heterosexual sex.
the events are really sad. This event has a lot of awareness, but it’s also an event that you get enjoyment from, because it’s like different walks of life. We’ve had police officers come on their break and go through the experience; we have husbands and wives who will bring their children. It’s just a whole vibe to be able to learn about HIV and AIDS and prevention in a different way, because in our community, we don’t talk about it. So it gets us to start having that conversation.”
For Collins, storytelling and immersive art play a role in shifting the narratives around HIV and health equity, especially for Black women. Contrary to popular stereotypes about women living with HIV, she says that most of these women are not homeless and are either married or in longterm relationships.
So when talking to an audience that’s not necessarily thinking about HIV precautions or prevention options, Collins says you have to be creative. People don’t want to be lectured. And they don’t want a PSA. Instead, Collins made it an experience.
To illustrate, Collins says one of the installations, What Does HIV Sound Like?, has visitors line up at a gumball machine, insert a quarter, and twist the handle to receive a capsule with a name on it. Then they head to an audio experience room with phone booths, where the code is scanned, and the woman whose name is in the capsule relates her experience with HIV.
Collins describes some of the symbolism behind another installation, Is This Stigma, which is in a completely black-lit room, with stigmatizing phrases and words illuminated under a blacklight.
“So when you read the words and the phrases, you’re asking yourself, ‘Is this stigma?’” Collins says. “Because in our society, we know that stigma
In a lot of cases where the women are married or in long-term relationships, Collins says that the men likely have a problem with monogamy or have insecurities about their sexual orientation. She says that it boils down to more than just dishonesty, but a fear of being judged for their sexual preferences.
“It shows how far behind we are as a culture,” Collins says. “Because when it comes to the gay community, they’re on it. They’re on PrEP, they’re educated, they know what’s up. And even when it comes to white women, it just shows that, culturally, there’s something different going on with white women and white men than it is with Black women and Black men. And it’s like, we still have so much further to go. Because it’s like, what is the problem here, that we’re contracting this, but the percentage of what we make up of the population is crazy, it’s so small. But then we’re getting HIV at a higher rate. It’s because the conversations aren’t being had; it’s the access to care; it’s the stigma; it’s all of those things that still play a part within our culture. And having these conversations and being able to put it out to where we will relate and will gravitate to, I think that’s what’s important.”
With one of the next steps in preventative care being to address bisexuality in the Black community, Collins says that honesty is something that can’t be forced. In the meantime, her focus remains on teaching Black women to be aware of the issue and how to protect themselves,“because you can’t leave your health in somebody else’s hands.”
And after doing this work for a few years now, Collins says she can finally feel proud to have made a difference with what she has created. If there is one thing visitors take away from Her Art Works, she hopes it’s to treat their partners with care and recognize that their actions impact the people that they love.
“I feel like if people honestly start thinking about that, then a lot of the stuff can be preventative. It’s not just about you, and your desires and what you want. It’s about the people around you as well.”

H MART, A HUB OF K-FOOD IN O-TOWN
H Mart may be hectic and hyperactive, but a trip is hugely rewarding just the same
BY FAIYAZ KARA
Lost in a Korean wilderness again; and all the children are insane. With apologies to the Doors fans out there, this textually modified lyric came to me while biting into a genetically modified Pinkglow® pineapple I procured for $7.99 after being hip-checked by a rotund sexagenarian reaching for the same neatly displayed fruit box in one of H Mart’s many, many produce aisles. Yes, the madding crowds at H Mart can get maddening, and weekends here make a Black Friday sale at Walmart seem like a slow walk through a library. In fact, dodging cars and trains of grocery carts is but a minor inconvenience, an initiation even, to shopping at one of the largest Asian grocery stores on the continent. Admittedly, some fellow food hooligans and I contributed to the
chaos — wielding a cleaver in the middle of the parking lot to live-hack a fresh and pungent durian will inevitably create a bit of a stink.
On a recent Sunday morning, I got to H Mart early enough to load and lock a trunkful of groceries into my car by 10 a.m., including a couple of live lobsters for only $22 (honestly, H Mart’s seafood section with deliveries made daily from the Fulton Fish Market is worth the trip alone), four pounds of rambutan ($11), a yellow watermelon ($5) and a box of Tokyo Banana sponge cake ($12.99). BTW: I was denied purchase of a yuzu highball cocktail in a can. “Sorry, we can’t sell alcohol before noon on Sundays,” the checkout girl said to me. Um, I think someone needs to tell the H Mart brass that Orlando’s Sunday blue laws
were lifted during the Obama administration. On the way back in from the parking lot, I planned on a little culinary chaos in the food court with my pal, but we came to learn that most vendors open at 11 a.m. Some, like Paris Baguette and Kung Fu Tea, in the corridor leading to the food court, open at 10 a.m. So does Eggcellent, where we procured a spicy shrimp sandwich ($9.99) with American cheese, parsley, onion and an oddly sweet chili sauce in between thick-cut brioche bread served in a wax-paper pouch. Turned out to be pretty gratifying.
Alas, the tepid flat white ($5.45) from Coffee & Co. and a too-sweet “Sunrise” fruit tea sparkler ($7.95) from Da Bang weren’t. Da Bang is also home to the Korean 10-won crepe coin, a mozzarella-filled round known for its cheese pull. But cheese pulls excite me and the pal about as much as a mayo tasting flight, so we secured a roomy table in the main food court and surveyed the options.
First stop: Jaws Topokki for a thick, ruddy soup ($14.99/$8.49 half) filled with chewy rolls of tteokbokki, or rice cakes. “Do you want it spicy or regular?” asked the girl behind the counter. “Just know that regular is also spicy.” I can confirm that it most certainly is. Lolling in that pool of gochujang fire were fish cakes, cabbage, green onions, fried fish cakes and a quail egg. Gimbap seaweed rolls, like the bibimbap gimbap ($10.49) filled with beef and rice, were heartily devoured. Of note were the intricate fillings of carrot, cucumber, burdock root, radish and mushroom inside those rolls.
Then it was onto Chidon Katsu Place for, what else, katsu. If you’re going to indulge in a non-Korean staple at H Mart’s food court, make it Chidon’s panko-fried Japanese cutlets. We got the chicken katsu with the veggie fried rice upgrade ($21.99) and couldn’t stop raving about the light, delicate fry. It’s served with miso soup, katsu dipping sauce, pickled radishes and shredded cabbage.
Perhaps our favorite order on this day was a recommendation by Lily, the woman at U Chun. She touted the udon noodle dishes, and Clarice Lam, Kaya’s new executive pastry chef, vouched for them after I saw her slurping those squigglers down. But Lily’s fave dish was the mul nengmyun ($16) — cold, chewy buckwheat noodles buried beneath an icy slush of vinegary beef broth and, WOW, were they ever refreshing. “This is great hangover food,” said the pal. “I wish I got drunk last night.” Julienned cucumbers, sliced radishes and a sesame-specked soft-boiled egg added body to every stellar slurp. Get. This. Soup.
At this point, we were as stuffed as a mandu on Lunar New Year, but the crowds in front of Myung Ga Korean BBQ & Tofu Soup drew us in. Mandu dumplings are offered here, but as a lover of Korean hot stone rice bowls, I couldn’t help but froth over a gurgling dolsot piled high with fried rice, spicy squid, shrimp, beef bulgogi and a mess of scallions and sesame ($24). The best part: It’s all set atop a steamed, custardy egg. Somehow even more comforting — well, to me, anyway — was a simple kimchi pancake ($15) with a crispy bottom. In a sea of meatfilled plates, add this veggie-forward option to the mix.
On a subsequent visit, following our parking lot shenanigans with the king of all fruits, we headed back in to give Paik’s Noodle and its Korean-Chinese fare a try. It’s a concept by chef and Netflix personality Jong Won Paik, who’s been the subject of a firestorm of controversies of late. The chili jajangmyeon noodles ($13.95) with little bits of pork in a black bean sauce were a firestorm as well. After the sensorial wallop of the durian, eating these noodz was like a gut punch on top of a gut punch. Mochi donuts ($3.25 each) procured from Oh K-Dog, a joint known for their boffo mozzarella-stuffed Korean fried hot dogs on a stick, helped quell the intestinal rage. Oh, and if you haven’t experienced the glory of a K-Dog, do. Just be wary of social media shills ordering the dogs solely to film performative cheese pulls in front of the food court masses.
I mean, really! What the H! fkara@orlandoweekly.com

Streaming premieres you won’t want to miss this week.
BY STEVE SCHNEIDER
Premieres Wednesday:
Secret Santa — This week’s cynical Hallmark Channel knockoff has a single mom finding unlikely love when she poses as a man to score a job as a Santa at a ski resort. And strangely, Riley Gaines is totally cool with it. (Netflix)
With Love, Meghan: Holiday Celebration — Proving she can be just as tone-deaf at the holidays as at any other time of the year, the Duchess of Sussex demonstrates the posh approach to rituals like gift wrapping. Speaking of sus sex, what are the chances Uncle-in-Law Andrew drops by to share his unique definition of “stocking stuffer”? (Netflix)
Premieres Thursday:
The Abandons — Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter muscles in on Taylor Sheridan’s territory by casting Lena Headey and Gillian Anderson in a series that dramatizes the struggle to control the Oregon of the 1850s. Loser has to take Idaho too! (Netflix)
The Believers Season 2 — Having successfully converted a Buddhist temple into a front for their shady financial schemes, our Thai anti-
The New Yorker at 100 — Celebrate a century of endearing snootiness by delving deep into the history of the publication that gave us William Shawn, Pauline Kael and David Remnick. And then wouldn’t take any of them back! (Netflix)
Owning Manhattan — Master broker Ryan Serhant promises “all-out real estate warfare” in Season 2. But what feels like a boom is actually a bubble, because every one of Curtis Sliwa’s cats happens to be looking for its own apartment. (Netflix)
The Price of Confession — Wrongly jailed for the murder of her husband, a Korean woman is offered a shot at freedom if she’s willing to commit an actual killing. In the worst-case scenario, her sentence gets doubled. In the best-case scenario, she goes free for 15 years, until she’s brought out of retirement to do one last job for the villain of an entirely different Netflix movie. (Netflix)
Reflection in a Dead Diamond — The Italian spy movies of the 1960s are the template for a kitschy homage, with a septuagenarian secret agent looking back on a career full of girls, gadgets and clumsily dubbed dialogue. Variety compared it to Tarantino — and not favorably, either. Guess they meant it never finds its feet. (Shudder)
Premieres Monday:
heroes forge an uneasy alliance with a local politico that plunges them into a genuine crisis of conscience. Well, of course. Throwing in your lot with politicians gets you consigned to an entirely different level of hell. (Netflix)
Fugue State 1986 — True Colombian history is the underpinning for the disturbing story of a friendship between two literature students that led to a horrific mass shooting. Sounds like somebody had particularly strong opinions about Gabriel García Márquez. (Netflix)
The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives Season 3 Reunion — Vanderpump Rules star Stassi Schroeder plays host as the cast reconvenes to fill us all in on what they’ve been up to since the cameras stopped rolling. In a surprise twist, more than one of them has converted to Boko Haram. (Hulu)
Premieres Friday:
Jay Kelly — George Clooney makes another run at the Oscars, taking on the role of a fabulously successful actor who is known by everyone but doesn’t know himself. Gosh, sounds like he needs to publish an op-ed calling for himself to step down. (Netflix)
Dance Moms: A New Era — Coach Glo Hampton has to contend with a bunch of fresh challenges in Season 2, including opening a new studio and managing the attitudes of a recently enrolled student and her mother. None of which sounds as daunting as the trials Abby Lee Miller had to endure, like GOING TO FEDERAL PRISON. (Hulu)
Here Come the Irish — Plot lines in season 2 of the Notre Dame football docuseries include McKenna Englhardt’s quest to become the first female mascot in the team’s history. OK, Riley Gaines has to do something about this, right? Nancy Mace is hung up at the airport again. (Peacock)
Premieres Tuesday:
Badly in Love — Japan brings us a wacky twist on the dating genre, hoping to make sparks fly between 11 “former delinquents” who are used to “living by their fists.” What could go wrong, right? Can’t wait for the reunion special, which will double as the pilot for a Japanese edition of My Lover, My Killer. (Netflix)
Blood Coast — It’s Season 2 for the exploits of the bad-boy French cops whose best shot at cleaning up the streets is their refusal to play by les rules. After all, it worked such wonders for Nicolas Sarkozy and Gérard Depardieu. (Netflix)

WINTER SOULSTICE
Congressman Maxwell Frost speaks on the return of his MadSoul Music Festival
BY MATTHEW MOYER
Despite what could understatedly be termed an “eventful” year in Washington, D.C., Orlando’s U.S. Rep. Maxwell Alejandro Frost is still bringing back his MadSoul Music & Arts Festival this weekend. With a powerhouse lineup of music and speakers — think U.S. Rep. Ayanna Pressley, Florida Sen. LaVon Bracy Davis, Tennessee Rep. Justin Jones and more — this promises to be a beautiful day of music and advocacy. Orlando Weekly spoke to Rep. Frost about curating the lineup, lessons from last year, and using this platform to provide resources for direct action. (Read the full conversation at orlandoweekly.com.)
Talk to me a little bit about picking the headliners for this year’s fest.
We really wanted to think through ways that we could highlight either artists who have a connection to Florida or from the South generally,
or to one of the issues that we care about. That’s kind of the starting basis for a lot of the lineup.
Magdalena Bay was an artist that was always on the list of people we wanted to hit up. I’m a big fan of theirs. They put out my favorite album in the last year and they’re from Miami. We also wanted to book an artist that could bring in a lot of people, but that was still seen as coming up, in a way. We reached out to them about it and we’re really happy to confirm them.
Aly & AJ are very interesting. I met them at a gun violence prevention event a couple years ago, and asked them why they were there. They actually had survived an instance of gun violence; there was a drive-by shooting that happened while they were on tour, their bus got shot up. And they released a song called “Sirens” about gun violence. They’ve been big advocates, and I’ve done multiple things with them, and so they were more than happy to come down to do

outside, we had many guests that were at the festival that went outside to join the protests and then came inside, and vice versa. I didn’t have an issue with it, you know? There’s a national day of action, this is an important issue to highlight, and Gaza was spoken about on stage a lot.
the event. It’s a very similar thing with Cuco, who I met, and realized he was really into immigration work and really fighting ICE. And when he heard that we were going to be supporting local immigration groups, he was more than happy to come and be a part of it.
The Ren is probably the most different booking that we’ve done. They’ve fallen on really hard times with what’s going on with their building. I thought, what would be cooler than to uplift what they’re going through, also they’re just a staple of Orlando arts, music and culture. I called Donald [Rupe] and I said, “I’d love the Ren to do a set.” He asked, “What do you guys want us to do?” I was like, “I just want you to do the Ren on the MadSoul stage.”
When you think about the challenges of last year’s festival — the venue, the weather, the protests — what did you learn and how are you applying it to this year?
With the location, Loch Haven Park is beautiful. It was amazing to be out there. But I found, from a security perspective and logistics, it makes a lot more sense for us to move the festival to a music venue and a place that already had a lot of the infrastructure in it, which would allow us to use more resources for keeping people safe, keeping artists safe.
You know, on the protests and what happened, I think there’s a few things. MadSoul ended up falling on a nationwide day of action for Gaza, which I think was a big reason why a protest was planned. And the protests that happened
So I think that what happened outside was fine, but later on in the night, that interruption [Ed. note: Protesters in the crowd interrupted and briefly halted headliner Muna’s set] was actually a different group than who planned the protests outside. And I just think that wasn’t … I don’t think that was right, especially with a group like Muna. They’ve advocated so much and done a lot in terms of speaking out against the genocide in Gaza, and I’m not sure that really helped get a good, positive message across, especially to a lot of the audience. I think a big lesson for me was just making sure we’re intentional about talking about a lot of the issues that people care about. You have to ask yourself how is your event — if you’re trying to meet the moment culturally with music and different things like that — meeting the moment politically as well? That’s part of the reason I invited a lot of the people I invited this time. We’re going to talk about immigration, we’re going to talk about climate, we’re going to talk about Gaza, we’re going to talk about a lot of the things that are at the top of people’s minds.
It’s important as well to provide — in real life — resources and concrete things you can do. People desperately want to help change how awful seemingly everything is. Exactly. And a variety of options is so important because I could just, like, we could set it up so it’s literally just my campaign or just the Democratic party. But the fact of the matter is different people are going to want to do different kinds of work, right? It could be electoral politics, it could be mutual aid, it could be advocacy, it could be direct action. At MadSoul we’re going to have, I think, 25 or 30 different organizations who are essentially all vying to get the people going to MadSoul to be involved with their group. Whether it’s Sunrise Movement or issue advocacy or the Democratic party, you have a lot of options to pick from, which I think is important. Not enough Democrats do that because we tend to want people to just plug into our thing, but it’s really not about that. You’re going to have the opportunity to go and meet people from those groups here locally that can answer a question that a lot of people are asking: “What can I do?” And we want you to get involved with the group that can answer that question for you every single day.

The sex, drugs and rock & roll mystique has a permanent grip on the imagination for good, well-documented reason. Hell, almost any creative person can attest to the enhancing virtues of chemical vice. But as with all things sensational, reality can get distorted on its way to becoming legend. The truth is often more shaded. Any episode of Behind the Music will tell you that.
That’s one of the defining threads in the new release by Ocoee electronic artist Rev. Negative. “Space God is my ultimate album,” says Richie Collins, the man behind the name. “My first album produced without alcohol. Like in 20 years.”
“During this stage of my life, I had just got out of the hospital from detoxing from alcohol and possibly needing a liver transplant,” he says.“Not knowing how much time I had left on this earth, I made it my mission to release one final album, my opus magnum so to speak, and I had to do it without alcohol which was very scary and weird because I had gotten used to producing while under the influence.”
Now about the lore of rock & roll excess. It’s seductive. So much so that defying it can feel anticlimactic, like a soft-focus Hallmark ending to a hard-core pulp novel. That’s not how this tale goes.
As it turns out, sobriety hasn’t blunted Rev. Negative’s edge. True to his longtime ethos, Rev. Negative eschews the slick gloss often endemic to electronic dance music for raw underground grit. This is definitely not some sterile Tiësto bullshit here. On the 14-track Space God, his palette still leans toward variety and intensity, with a spectrum that encompasses acid, hardcore breakbeat (“Kill the Purple Murk”), dubstep (“Negative Bot 3000,”“A Simple Goodbye Would Suffice”), breaks

(“Dracula’s Synthesizer”), EBM (“The 2nd Acid Vat,” “Groove Till You Cutoff,” “Dildo Shantyh”) and dark downtempo (“Bittersweet Negativity”).
Space God is a work of fresh focus. More than just maintaining bite, the songs cut with new poignancy. With hooks more incisive and beats more penetrating, the sound design here is a new apex of definition and precision for Rev. Negative. It’s his sharpest expedition yet through the fertile electronic tunnels between dance, industrial and experimental.
Space God now streams everywhere. It’s also available for download and in very limited cassette release with special bonus track through area label Illuminated Paths.

Christmas in the Park
Winter Park lights up for the holidays as the Morse Museum and City of Winter Park team up for their 47th annual Christmas in the Park. The stars of the night are the museum’s Tiffany stained-glass windows placed throughout Central Park, turning the park into a glowing holiday tableau under the stars. But the crowds also come for live Christmas music from the Bach Festival Choir and Brass Ensemble, snacking and snuggling on blankets and that unmistakable holiday magic, Winter Park-style. The event is free, and blankets and lawn chairs can be set up as early as 4 p.m., as soon as the windows are installed. Violet Chachki and Gottmik
Drag heavyweights, No Gorge co-hosts and RuPaul’s Drag Race alumni Violet Chachki and Gottmik go toe-to-toe on stage as part of this co-headlining tour. And only the most fierce will emerge victorious. This Knockout tour is one that would give even Led Zeppelin pause — a mammoth 50-date tour across the entirety of North America. As with the aforementioned classic rockers, this tour is all about excess, where bigger is indeed better; each night blends live singing and daredevil cabaret with boxing-themed drag. “You’re going to see aerial, live vocals, lip-syncing, costumes, dancing, stand-up. It’s quite the variety show,” Chachki told Willamette Week. Local openers include Myki Meeks, Destiny’s Fantasy, Dominink and Ranii Ram. Get ready to (c)rumble. 7 p.m., The Vanguard, 578 N. The Nutcracker
Orlando Ballet dusts off the snowflakes, soldiers and sugarplums for its annual production of The Nutcracker at the Dr. Phillips Center. Now in its third year under choreographer Jorden Morris, the holiday tradition manages to feel both timeless and freshly enchanted every time. Expect elaborate sets, sparkling costumes and whimsical yet breathtaking choreography. The leading cast is still under wraps, but more than 150 dancers bring Clara’s dream world to life. Families can pack the house for the matinees and enjoy preshow children’s activities during select performances. Last year, a brief wave of online chatter critiquing the ballet’s “traditionalism” made the rounds, but audiences ultimately embraced the magic as they always do. Tickets range from accessible seats to premium packages, if you want to get closer to the snowfall. Runs through Dec. 24, Steinmetz Hall, Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, 445 S. Magnolia Ave., drphillipscenter.org, $150-$50 — EB

Obituary
Tampa death metal legends Obituary have spent the bulk of 2025 celebrating seminal album Cause of Death on stages around the world and, appropriately, they’ll be closing out the year tearing through that album in Florida. The band’s six-date Florida Swamp run will have them playing Miami, Jacksonville, Orlando, Destin and two climactic nights in Tampa. It’ll be a night of memories, as this 1990 album was the band’s breakthrough out of the fetid Florida underground — and a well-deserved one, the record a feral yet technical monster that still stands out as one of the finest DM albums of all time. We suspect plenty of infamous faces of metal past and present will be at Conduit for the occasion. Again, deservedly. As you might expect, this show is very sold-out.
But fuck it, we’re spotlighting it anyway. 7 p.m., Conduit, 6700 Aloma Ave., Winter Park, conduitfl.com, SOLD OUT AS HELL. — MM

KrampusFest
The Milk District dons the horns, furs and chains and summons one of the region’s largest gatherings of holiday mischief-makers for KrampusFest at the Plaza Live. Inspired by Alpine folklore, Krampus is the horned, hoofed, chain-rattling counterpart to Saint Nick; he punishes the naughty with switches — and, yes, kidnapping — and rewards the virtuous, bringing gleeful chaos to the season. Expect live bands (including infamous locals Bad Santa and the Angry Elves), local eats, festive drinks, costume contests, a Krampuslauf parade and more than 150 holiday vendors. The festival is free and family-friendly earlier in the day, but after 6 p.m. it shifts to 18-and-up, for the naughty only. VIP packages are available if you want to get that much closer to the mayhem. 2 p.m., The Milk District, 425 N. Bumby Ave., milkdistrict.org, free. — EB

Lydia Lunch
Lydia Lunch is well-known for many reasons — she’s the queen of no wave, the prophet of our slow apocalypse, an accomplished poet and author (up to and including a cookbook!), an incisive podcaster, a spot-on cultural critic and an inspiration to several generations of margin-walkers. What we’d like to point out, though, is her unerring instincts in picking artists to join her on her spoken word tours: Exene Cervenka, Jerry Stahl, Joseph Keckler (all of whom gigged in Florida with her). And now, add JT Habersaat to the list. The Austin-based “godfather of punk comedy” makes for a natural tandem with Mz. Lunch; he has deep roots in the DIY underground,
is an accomplished author and has opened for Henry Rollins. So Habersaat will make you laugh and then Lydia will make you flinch repeatedly.

Poidog (A582646) was brought in from the field by our officers; he was found wandering the streets with another dog. Our vets place him anywhere from 2-3 years old, but when meeting him, everyone swears he is much younger. Poidog isn’t big, but he isn’t small. He has an infectious smile and puppy energy. He is affectionate, mischievous, playful. He loves toys, loves hugs, and if he’s let up on a sofa, he’ll snuggle for hours. People keep asking what kind of breed mix he is, and all we can tell them is he is the best breed of all: a shelter dog.

Poidog has been struggling with sharing his space with other dogs. We know he gets along with them, but here at the shelter, he seems to prefer to be alone. He can be restless, and it’s clear he gets frustrated when he gets bored. Poidog will need an active adopter who will not only spoil him with long walks and lots of play time, but also with a lot of attention. He’s been melting a lot of hearts among staff; hopefully the right adopter will come along and fall in love.
Orange County Animal Services is located at 2769 Conroy Road in Orlando, near the Mall at Millenia. The shelter is open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. every day except Wednesday, when it’s open 2-6 p.m. For more information, please call 407-8363111 or visit ocnetpets.com.
