Fly direct to the Panda Capital from Heathrow Heathrow today has welcomed Air China’s thrice weekly service to Chengdu, home to the Giant Panda Breeding Research Base and Sichuan Cuisine. The launch of the service comes as new CEBR research shows a remarkable rise in the value of Chinese exports via Heathrow. Heathrow’s new route to Chengdu is the airport’s 12th direct connection to China. The number of Chinese connections via the UK’s hub airport has more than doubled since the start of 2018, when there were just five routes available. To fly to Chengdu, Air

China will use an A330200 aircraft facilitating the transport of 80,000 passengers a year and 3,744 tonnes of cargo between China and the UK. Heathrow’s latest Trade Tracker, by economic analysts CEBR, shows that while China’s own exports have decreased, the exports to China from Heathrow are not showing any sign of slowing down. China is now the third most valuable export destination from the airport, following the US and the EU. Exports via Heathrow to China have grown in value by 135% in 2018 compared to 2017, totalling over £7

billion. The same analysis shows that, on average, every operational hour at Heathrow sees nearly £10 million of exports fly out across the world. An analysis of Heathrow cargo data value reveals the top exports flying via the airport to China in 2018.

The top annual export, pharmaceuticals, was valued at an astounding US$461.05 million. Other top exports by value include: 1. Aerospace materials US $334.24 million 2. Art – US $151.9 million 3. Computers – US $67.69 million 4. Clothing and fashion accessories - US $29.8 million 5. Footwear – US $12.6 million By identifying efficiencies and gaps in schedules, Heathrow has been able to accommodate new routes to China. However, this is a limited and piecemeal approach.

New flights to Cornwall

Heathrow has this weekend (Sunday 31st March 2019) welcomed Flybe’s route from Cornwall Airport Newquay. The yearround service operates from Heathrow Terminal 2: The Queens Terminal and is operated by a 78-seat Q400 aircraft, offering four flights a day, seven days a week. Celebrations were held yesterday to mark the start of this important new service, starting with a breakfast hosted by the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce. Guests included the local MP for St Austell & Newquay, Steve Double; Cornwall Council’s Geoff Brown, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Transport and Malcom Bell, CEO of Visit Cornwall who, together with leading members of the business community, then flew to Heathrow. On arrival at Heathrow, the group met with Secretary of State for Transport, Chris Grayling, Chief Commercial Officer Ross Baker, and Flybe CEO, Christine OurmièresWidener for a joint visit to a special stand hailing ‘all things Cornish’. This featured as stand with Cornwall travel booklets and complimentary goody bags were offered

to passengers transiting through Heathrow Terminal 2; The Queen’s Terminal. Mr Grayling said: “The new route from Cornwall to our national hub airport offers significant opportunities for local businesses and people and will help boost tourism across the South West. “It’s great to see this new route launched with help from the government, as we work to build a better connected UK.” Ross Baker, Chief Commercial Officer at Heathrow said: “This route highlights our commitment to domestic connectivity and it is fantastic to welcome this regular service between Newquay and Heathrow. Joining our regions to the UK’s only hub airport marks a fantastic opportunity for many including exporters from Cornwall now connecting to global markets and inward investors, tourists and students from all over the world. Now they can all experience the wonders the region has to offer in a much easier and convenient way.” Ms Ourmières-Widener commented: “We are delighted to celebrate with our partners the start of our new Heathrow

service from Newquay. There has been an overwhelmingly positive response from customers since we announced the route. It offers multiple choices for onward connections to and from the rest of the world from the UK’s busiest airport – and also on to our own routes there to and from Aberdeen and Edinburgh, Guernsey and the Isle of Man.” In further comment on the new route, Cornwall Council Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Transport, Geoff Brown said that ‘the new route to the capital operated under a Public Service Obligation negotiated by Cornwall Council and supported by the government, will provide passengers with hundreds of links to global destinations opening up new travel and business opportunities’. Cornwall Airport Newquay’s Managing Director, Al Titterington, said: “It’s fantastic that all our hard work to make sure that Cornwall Airport Newquay has direct access to Europe’s busiest hub has finally come to fruition. The worldwide connectivity that this brings opens up a world of opportunity for Cornwall.
