(DIT) Exporting is GREAT campaign are inviting SMEs across the country to apply for 20 ‘World of Opportunity’ grants worth £2,000 each. The grants will support small businesses that are just beginning to export or help those companies that can export, but don’t. Previous winners of the World of Opportunity grant such as Visit Football, Pearson Cycle Specialists and Julia Brooker Paintings have used the money to fund vital trade missions, participate in international trade shows or commission the international market research needed to establish their brands in these countries. Representatives from DIT will support each winner by helping them access the right information, advice and assistance while connecting businesses to overseas buyers, markets and each other. Plaza Premium will also
be providing complimentary lounge passes for the winners as they leave Heathrow on their journeys. A panel of exporting experts including Lord Deighton, Heathrow’s Chairman and Parveen Thornhill, Head of London & Devolved Administrations from DIT will select this year’s winners. Last year’s ’World of Opportunity’ Programme received nearly 150 entries from SMEs from Cornwall to Glasgow and the programme is expected to become even more competitive this year. To win one of the prized 20 grants, applicants will need to show why they’re primed to expand their businesses abroad, demonstrate their export capability and give their rationale for the markets they’re targeting. Queen Victoria’s Circus Windsor Castle 14 September 2019 On Saturday, 14 September, a Family Festival at Windsor Castle will transport visitors back to the time of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert as part of celebrations marking the 200th anniversary of their births. Queen Victoria’s Circus will bring the Castle alive with attractions and performances inspired by George Wombwell’s travelling menagerie that visited Windsor Castle in 1847. From circus performances and falconry displays to arts and crafts and dress up opportunities, children and adults alike can immerse themselves in the spectacle of a Victorian circus. Throughout the day, a variety of drop-in activities will guide children through the training required to become an official member of the circus troupe. By gathering enough stamps on their ‘Passport to the Big Top’, the children will become fully trained circus members eligible to receive a special medal at the end of their visit. They will have the chance to enter a draw to win prizes including a corgi soft toy.

economic opportunities that Heathrow provides as the UK’s only hub airport and most valuable port, with more long-haul routes than any other UK airport and connections to 200 destinations in over 80 countries. In addition to this programme, for the past 22 years Heathrow has run a successful series of Business Summits around the country. The summits give SMEs the opportunity to engage directly with top tier companies in the airport’s supply chain and discover opportunities to become one of the many businesses that keeps Heathrow running. Heathrow Chairman, Lord Deighton said: “This is the third year that we’re running the World of Opportunity programme and we’re eagerly looking forward to reviewing the entries from a wide variety of innovative and unique small businesses from every corner of the country. “As the UK’s front door we play a key role in connecting British entrepreneurs to markets further afield and we’re looking forward to supporting these small businesses as they begin their exporting journeys.” International Trade Secretary Liz Truss MP said: “For three years, the World of Opportunity

The final cost of Heathrow Airport’s 3rd Runway The published costs of Heathrow Airport Ltd’s new North West Runway (“the 3rd Runway”) are five years out of date, are misleading and the real number could be as high as £61 billion by 2050, according to a detailed analysis by Heathrow Hub Ltd, the independent promoters of the cheaper rival extended-runway scheme. The cost of the initial phase, included in Heathrow’s current consultation, could be as much as £37.7 billion when it is supposedly completed in 2026. Heathrow Airport and the Department for Transport both use the number £14 billion in describing the cost of the 3rd Runway plan,
but this uses 2014 prices and assumes a pared down scheme with no new terminal capacity. Heathrow’s current consultation shows a completely different scheme. As well as these changes, the reasons for the ballooning costs in the Heathrow Airport 3rd Runway scheme include the expense and complexity of building it on a raised viaduct over a diverted M25 right by the M4 junction – Heathrow Airport admitting in 2018, after six years of work, that its original idea of a tunnel was undeliverable – as well as inflation and increased land acquisition and relocation costs. An analysis by
Heathrow Hub has been submitted to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), demanding Heathrow Airport comes clean about its costs, which will be passed on to airlines and passengers via higher passenger charges. A spokesman for the rival Heathrow Hub extended runway scheme, a first phase of which could be operational before the 3rd Runway for a cost of £4.7bn, said: “The idea the 3rd Runway will cost only £14 billion is hopelessly out of date and inaccurate. On a like-for-like basis we estimate it is nearly £38 billion. “Heathrow Airport should come clean on the true costs.
