We hope to highlight every positive change that your support made possible throughout 2024. Eastern Social Welfare Society, Inc. has walked alongside neighbors of all ages-from children to the elderly-on their journey of recovery and self-reliance at 27 facilities across the country.
With a firm belief that every life deserves respect in any circumstances, we have provided safe protection to children suffering from abuse and neglect, steadfast companionship to those facing the fear of standing alone, and healthy daily routines and job opportunities to elderly individuals who had been beyond the reach of welfare services.
It was your warm-hearted support and companionship that made these many changes possible. Your generosity made someone’s life safer while empowering others to take steps toward self-reliance. Your support also gave children in impoverished regions of the Philippines and Sri Lanka greater access to learning opportunities for a brighter future.
Regardless of where you live or what your circumstances are, it is universal to pursue respect toward human being and hope to get better. In line with this belief, we practice welfare services in the most trustworthy manner possible to help people to live better lives.
In 2025, we will continue to strive beyond today's lives toward a better tomorrow, bringing positive changes to our families, communities, and the world.
Thanks to all striving with us!

Love the Children Hospital
Children Waiting for Warm Embraces
37 Years of Standing by 30,000 Children
In January 1986, Love the Children Hospital was established as an affiliated medical institution to support the healthy growth of children who lack family protection and require specialized care. Initially operating in a space of approximately 280 pyeong (around 925 square meters), the hospital provided professional treatment and attentive care to around 70 infants and 50 children under temporary protection.
Since then, Love the Children Hospital has continued to offer timely and specialized medical interventions for children in need of complex care—such as premature infants, those with congenital disorders, and those affected by rare diseases. The hospital has consistently pursued holistic care so that every child, regardless of disability or health condition, may grow up embraced by the warmth of a loving family.
As a result, over the past 37 years, approximately 35,000 children awaiting adoption received treatment and healing at Love the Children Hospital, making it a vital part of their journey toward meeting a new family.
However, as times have changed, the number of children waiting for adoption has gradually decreased. In March 2024, the operation of Love the Children Hospital officially came to an end.
For 37 years, the hospital devoted its full heart to each and every precious life. Although its role has now concluded, our commitment to supporting the healthy growth of children will continue without pause.
“There is one I still vividly remember among the many babies I have treated.
One day, there was a baby rescued from deep in the mountains as his crying was heard by people. He was found under a pile of fallen leaves, barely covered by a test paper. His uncovered toes had been bitten by ants, too.
We later learned that a high school girl had secretly given birth alone in the mountains, without her family’s knowledge—a story almost too heartbreaking to believe. Fortunately, the baby made a full recovery and was later adopted into a loving home.”

Foster Family Support Project
A Night of Gratitude for Foster Mothers-Honoring
the Love of Over 3,600 Women and 52 Years of Devotion
Since 1972, ESWS has pursued adoption and foster family services with the aim of realizing every child’s right to grow up in a family environment. In the early stages, foster families were primarily formed through members of the Housewives’ Club (now known as foster mothers). To date, 3,658 foster mothers have cared for approximately 30,000 children awaiting adoption.
Before an adoption is finalized, children are placed in foster homes where they can grow in a stable and nurturing environment, laying the foundation for healthy development.
As key practitioners of family-based care, foster mothers play a critical role in supporting children’s early emotional growth and social adjustment. As the adoption program transitions to the government in July 2025, the foster care service is entering its final stage. Nevertheless, we believe the love and commitment of foster mothers will remain a lasting presence in the lives of children.
On December 6, 2024, we held “A Night of Gratitude for Foster Mothers” to express our sincere appreciation to those who have lovingly cared for children awaiting adoption over the past 52 years. Foster mothers have gone beyond simply caring for children—they have been the first to offer the warmth and love of a parent to those in need of protection.
The event was a heartfelt occasion that included stories such as a child who, despite disabilities, achieved independence, and another who returned as an adult to thank the foster mother who once cared for them. It was a time to reflect on the meaning of the long-standing dedication and care of foster mothers and to officially recognize their invaluable contributions.
"When my friends ask me how many moms I have, I tell them three: My birth mother, my foster mother who cared for me, and my adoptive mother who is raising me now. All three are precious mothers to me.
I am truly grateful to my foster mom, who lovingly cared for me when I was a baby, and I deeply appreciate her warm welcome every time I visit Korea. Having a foster mom in my life is truly a blessing."

Ji-young, a Single Mom Who Opened the Path to Independence through Entrepreneurship
“Raising kids alone was overwhelming enough, but I could not give up on my dream of opening a café.”
After the sudden death of her husband, Ji-young (alias) cared for her young children alone, working short shifts during the day and part-time jobs at night. Although she dreamed of entrepreneurship, it was not easy for her to pursue professional training while managing childcare and living expenses.
Then, selected for the “Renewed Job, Renewed Future” program, Ji-young received practical startup training learning various traditional Korean dishes such as Gujeolpan (nine-sectioned platter), balloon flower root syrup, handmade jerky, and walnut pie. Thanks to financial support for tuition, she could focus on the classes without economic burden, which greatly aided her preparation for opening a business.
Despite the challenges of juggling work and childcare, Ji-young completed the entire program diligently and, in May 2024, finally achieved her goal of opening a personal café.
Her handmade products have earned positive customer reviews and word-of-mouth reputation as popular “gifts of filial piety.”

Our organization has focused on establishing a foundation for the economic independence of single-mother families through the “Renewed Job, Renewed Future” program, which is held regularly every year and continued in 2024. This program goes beyond short-term job placement, offering a step-by-step approach to sustainable self-reliance. Through tailored support such as vocational training tuition assistance, practical training, professional instructor development, and household financial mentoring, participants’ employment skills have been systematically strengthened.
Building on the successes of 2023, the program in 2024 especially has further enhanced its effectiveness by refining job linkage and program sophistication, solidifying its role as a core initiative that supports stable independence and sustainable economic activity.

Through handbell performance, students develop emotional expression and teamwork, gaining emotional stability and opportunities for self-expression. In addition, the annual Arts Education Week—open to all students and faculty—offers hands-on artistic experiences that promote social adaptability and a strong sense of community.
“Handbells are instruments that move hearts with their beautiful sound.

「Healing Agriculture Care Farm」 – Emotional Recovery Blossoming in a Shared Garden
The Healing Agriculture Care Farm program empowers older adults to cultivate small gardens and grow crops, promoting vitality through hands-on agricultural activities.
More than just physical engagement, the program fosters meaningful intergenerational connection helping to build emotional bonds within the community especially through natural encounters with children.
While having experienced low self-esteem from years of living alone, Mr. Ho-Won Kim (pseudonym), got to join the Healing Agriculture Care Farm run by the Pyeongtaek Senior Club.
Though farming alongside peers was physically demanding, he found renewed warmth and joy every time the children greeted him with a cheerful “Grandpa.” Their smiles and words of appreciation gave him a deep sense of pride, and the simple fact of having a place to go to work each day brought new vitality to his life. Beyond the modest income, reconnecting with others added rich emotional fulfillment to his everyday routine.

‘Seodaemun Digital Tutor Project’ 550 Seniors Participated in Smart Education for
Digitally Vulnerable
Seniors
The Seodaemun Digital Tutor Project was conducted targeting seniors using community centers, senior classes, and welfare facilities in the Seodaemun district to help the older generation actively adapt to the rapidly changing digital environment.
Seniors who once found it daunting even to use a smartphone are now getting used to things such as photography, app usage, and kiosk experience through personalized, practical lessons from digital tutors.
This program not only addresses the digital divide among the elderly but also successfully trained 13 career-disrupted women as professional digital tutors, doubly creating employment opportunities. To date, a total of 550 seniors have experienced connecting with the digital world.
“I was able to use my phone like a scoreboard to entertain my family, call a taxi by myself, and now, instead of asking others all the time, I can search for what I need now. It really makes me feel like I’m part of society.
Especially when I made it to the final round of the ‘e-Sports Golden Bell Competition’ last December 4th, I felt such joy that I still can’t believe I actually did it”
- Participant, Seodaemun Digital Tutor Project –
“It has been a year of teaching many seniors through smartphone classes. Though they started with fear, I felt great fulfillment watching them gain confidence as they learned to send messages, share photos, and use emojis.
One phone call from a senior urgently requesting a review session deeply moved me as an instructor.”

Identification of Socially Isolated Households through PublicPrivate Cooperation and Restoration of Social Networks
Focusing on Namgajwa 2-dong and Bukgajwa 2-dong areas where there is the highest proportion of welfare recipients among the 14 neighborhoods of Seodaemun-gu , Seodaemun Community Social Welfare Center has established a cooperative response system based on public-private collaboration to identify socially isolated households. To reach neighbors left in the welfare blind spots, we collaborated with various related institutions such as community service centers, public health centers, and the community self-sufficiency center. We also promoted a community-based outreach strategy to reach even the most isolated households.
As a result, we identified 168 households at risk of social isolation in the Namgajwa and Bukgajwa areas. 31 households deemed high-risk for solitary death were chosen among them and were provided customized services according to their specific needs.

Recovery: The Story of a One-Person Household, Mr. Jongrae Seo
Bukgajwa 1-dong
Namgajwa 1-dong
In September 2024, Mr. Jongrae Seo (alias), who was in extremely poor health due to emphysema, plantar fasciitis, and cartilage damage in his arm, was living alone in a small inn room. He survived under harsh conditions, eating nothing but bean sprout side dishes for all three meals each day. When invited to join the welfare center’s health class, he hesitated, saying, “I’m not sure it will mean anything to me.” However, after consistent explanation that it could be an opportunity to improve his health and restore his connection with the community, he eventually decided to participate. Since then, he has taken part regularly, building relationships with other participants and gradually regaining his energy through nutrition education and exercise.
He shared how his daily life had changed, saying, “Just moving my body a little seems to be helping my health. Thank you.”
Identifying Socially Isolated Households Activities by Local Residents
“Through the Social Isolation Household Support Project, I found out that far more residents are struggling with isolation than I had expected. Isolation is not an issue limited to one generation. Rather, it’s a challenge that spans all stages of life. I believe this is something the entire community must address together. We will continue to identify those in need and provide tailored support so they can reconnect with society.”

On-site Monitoring in Angeles, Philippines
From April 29 to May 1, Eastern conducted a 5-day and 3-night field visit to the project site in Angeles, Philippines, to carry out on-site monitoring.
The trip began with a local board meeting, followed by meetings with partner agencies and officials from the Department of Social Welfare of Angeles City.
We visited several project locations, including a youth protection center, the Sapang Bato mobile classroom, a vocational training center at Sitio Target Integrated School, and study rooms in the Anunas urban poor area, to assess the progress and implementation of ongoing programs.
We empower children and parents in impoverished areas through employment training and linkage services. In particular, we support female heads of household during times of crisis, helping them build the capacity to become self-reliant and achieve sustainable growth.

MOU Signed to Enhance Educational and Vocational Capacities for Ieta Youth in the Philippines
In February 2024, the Angeles Eastern Children’s Center in the Philippines signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Sitio Target Integrated School to strengthen educational and vocational opportunities for Ieta youth.
Sitio Target Integrated School is the only secondarylevel educational institution serving Ieta communities on Luzon Island. However, due to extreme poverty and persistent discrimination, students often face significant barriers to receiving stable and continuous education.
In particular, the absence of a high school curriculum limits students’ access to vocational training and professional certification after graduation, perpetuating intergenerational poverty, early marriage, and child labor.
To support these students stay in school and successfully transition into society after graduation, Eastern International launched vocational training and academic coaching programs. As a result, a total of 35 adolescents earned vocational certifications— an achievement that goes beyond the acquisition of basic skills. These programs have laid the foundation for their independence, enabling them to break free from the isolation of tribal society.
Furthermore, the youth who completed the program have regained confidence and a sense of accomplishment, becoming positive role models within their communities.
“Through educational programs such as the cooking class, our students have gained a sense of accomplishment and begun to nurture hopeful dreams of pursuing future careers. This support has been a valuable opportunity not only for our school but also for the entire Ieta community.
I sincerely hope it will empower our children to break the cycle of poverty and take charge of their own lives.”

Farms in the Elkaduwa and Deltota areas, Kandy, Sri Lanka
Launch of New Health and Hygiene Project
Eastern International has officially launched a new health and hygiene initiative to ensure the right to health for children and residents in impoverished farming communities in Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka has been experiencing severe economic hardship since the country’s financial default. Low-income residents in farming regions face limited access to medical care and are continuously exposed to multiple health threats, including the spread of infectious diseases driven by climate change.
In response, basic health services have been provided mainly in the Elkaduwa and Deltota areas, including general health check-ups, distribution of medicines and vitamins, and issuance of infant and young child health cards. Children and residents underwent medical screenings and received necessary care, while in Deltota, mental health support and hygiene education were offered to promote emotional recovery and healthier lifestyle habits.
This health and hygiene project focuses on empowering local residents to manage their own health by introducing a preventive approach based on Korea’s healthcare system. Currently, the program serves approximately 800 children and residents across five regions and aims to expand further into more farming communities in the future.
“For many residents in this region, poverty makes it nearly impossible to care for their health. Health and hygiene support is essential, not just helpful. Many endure illness and hardship, having given up even the hope of visiting a hospital. We sincerely hope this project becomes more than just a form of aid, but a meaningful opportunity for residents to take charge of their own health and well-being.
Experiencing and learning about Korea’s systematic approach to healthcare on-site was a truly valuable and eye-opening experience.”
