t’s protected however by a ridge that has a unique calling upon the world’s wildlife. It’s a sensual feast with new animals offering up a daily surprise. “How do howler monkeys generate so much noise?”, I wondered. Well actually, I learnt, they are the second loudest animal in the world after the blue whale and release their voluminous, plangent magic by using the wind. “How do hummingbirds keep enough fuel to stay in place? Well they hover in mid-air

by flapping their wings (50 to 80 beats per second) and visit between 2000 and 5000 flowers every day. How resourceful, cunning and wondrous are the forces of nature: the annona fruit changes from green to a darkish reddish-brown as it ripens; the Indian tree sheds its bark every three days while one local species of grass contracts with human touch. Whales mate above a beach shaped like a whale’s tail. Not to mention all the tricks of camouflage. ›

The stunning Manuel Antonio National Park

It was Longfellow who once said “My soul is full of longing for the secret of the sea and the heart of the great ocean sends a thrilling pulse through me”. A constant reminder to me in Costa Rica that the country is squashed between two oceans.

You have to keep your eyes open all the time. Every moment a branch snaps. What was that noise? Human or animal? It’s fascinating how much driftwood take on animal shapes. Is that a log or an iguana? Is that a rock out to sea or a whale? Was that the screech from a car or a primate? A mix of chirps and tweets, trills and howls. This jungle orchestra was quite an introduction as I arrived late at night at my first place to stay, Arenas Del Mar (www. arenasdelmar.com) and slept to the sounds of the pounding Pacific, to then awaken to witness from my balcony the long strand of Manuel Antonio beach.

30 / OCTOBER 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

Costa Rica is now a top destination for eco-tourism. Perfect for nature lovers and the very eco aware, is Arenas del Mar where I stayed. It’s a resort on a cliff top, set in eleven acres of jungle. Guests usually split their time between the beach and the hotel’s upper section, where the airy reception has an infinity pool alongside with a shape designed to blend with the length of the beach below. Buggies go up and down the steep slopes and one took me to my tropical fruit breakfast on a table on the sand of Playitas Beach in toe-touching reach of the ocean, where the staff, dressed in orange shirts and tan shorts, were attentive yet unobtrusive.

The architecture is respectful and harmonious with the environment. The décor is subdued. There are wooden floors, cream and green tiles in the bathroom and white linen on my king-sized bed. My ‘ocean view’ room had an indoor, outdoor feel with no pictures needed as it’s all on the outside, it’s all about the view. There’s an elemental joy in picking up an almond nut from its tree and, as if from heaven, a leaf descends dancing, entertaining and poetically falling while pelicans swooped alongside into the water as all my senses were engaged, demonstrating the beauty that nature can provide. ›

A majestic waterfall in Costa Rica

Iguanas hang out by the pool, halloween crabs scuttle through the gardens, sloths slumber in the treetops. In a sentence, the resort has delectable cuisine, exceptional levels of service and exemplary eco credentials. The landscape of Costa Rica and her biodiversity is simply magical: thick, lush rainforests, with their dense foliage, uncrowded pristine beaches, steep mountains and majestic volcanoes and waterfalls, the perfect backdrop for the sheer wonder of the colourful birds and animals. I walked for half an hour the length of the beach, at the end of which is the Manuel Antonio National Park. It cost me $16 to spend a day here and I could have taken any number of trails. Indeed I saw a caiman and a blue butterfly without the guides who with their binoculars only charged if I saw what 32 / OCTOBER 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

they pointed out. But the privacy of the beach, right by Cathedral Point where the original Quepos tribe performed their ceremonies, lured me to rest and in a moment a raccoon came after my rucksack that was acting as my pillow. Friends back home implored me to see the glorious stretch of many miles of the sandy beach of Playa Matapalo all the way from the Manuel Antonio to Dominical and then onto Uvita where the famous whale-shaped beach is a special natural feature. Inaccessible by foot, I took a boat from the beautiful marina in Quepos, where I got to look up at the houses in the hills and the varieties of green landscape beyond the beach all competing for light. As the day went on so the light changed affording different hues in the colour of the sea, from teal to lime green, from aquamarine to emerald green. ›

turtles, whales and dolphins visible at nature’s whim as it decides what it wants to show, if anything, though it always seems to provide some of its splendour. Here I witnessed one of the delights of the ocean life, the ‘arribada’: the mass nesting of the turtles.

Massive mothers had dragged themselves onto the shore weeks ago to leave their precious eggs covered with sand in a secret place only to then plod back to the sea never to see their young again. These miniature newly born then make their way out of their cracked eggs onto a sandy mound at the top of a beach. As tiny babies, they wade into the murky waters without fear with thousands of little heads bobbing about on the water waiting for the right time to come out. And tragically only a few ever make it as they are picked off by predators. ›

The tropical exuberance of animal life is utterly enchanting. From the fishy, to the furry and the feathered. I felt immersed in the natural wonder of the many birds and animals. Huge three-feet long iguanas tried to blend in with the sand on the beach while also hissing at those passing by a little too close. Exotic birds and butterflies filled the skies and brown fireflies flitted: both the ‘candelilla’ variety with its light gleaming on and off and the ‘carbunca’ with its light always on. I looked through the index of the definitive book on Costa Rican birds to find exquisite and exotic names like bananaquit, yellow-breasted chat, chuck-will’s-widow, dickcissel, marbled godwit, Nicaraguan grackle, yellow-faced grassquit, Bonaparte’s gull, semiplumbeous hawk, red-legged honeycreeper, killdeer, red knot, scaly-throated leaftosser, limpkin and lanceolated monklet. Not to mention of course, the national icon, the resplendent quetzal that feasts on aguacate, a wild avocado Some useful coloured guide cards opened my eyes to exotic names like the misfit leaf frog, the bullet ant, the trumpetfish, the beaubrummel (a fish) and the Jesus Christ lizard, so-called as it walks on water. ›

As for the people, Costa Rica is one of the longest running democracies in Latin America and is hearteningly safe and peaceful. It has had no wars for over a hundred years, and there is no standing army. And possessed with this openhearted spirit, some locals are amazed to see guns when they go abroad. They’re known as ‘ticos’ after their habit of using diminutives in their lingo and I sensed their open humility that doubtless comes with belonging to this wondrous kingdom of animals. When the conquistadors came in the 16th century in the vain search of gold in Costa Rica (the ‘rich coast’), they found only azure waters and 38 / OCTOBER 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

blanched beaches. Brave early farmers went at their task alone, abandoned by their former visitors. They tamed the land, hacked forests, planted coffee and bred cattle. They settled and in their solitude created a tiny model for living, a miniature democracy with no pecking order, no extremes of wealth and poverty, each assisting their neighbour in order to subsist. And thus this unique Costa Rican mentality was forged and the country now ranks as one of the happiest places on the planet. Several countries have an all-purpose word to cover our basic daily forms of interaction. In Hawaii there’s ‘aloha’, in Fiji there’s ‘bula’ and

in Costa Rica there’s ‘pura vida’. Literally translating as ‘pure life’ it spans the entire spectrum of greeting and parting, incorporating: ‘no worries’, ‘enjoy life’, ‘take it easy’, ‘good luck’ and ‘have a good day’. I couldn’t get enough of this delightful country. I have to go back. Whenever but soon. Pura vida!

shows and 200 restaurants offering 60 types of cuisine. And it’s all a 15-minute, sociallydistanced and mask-mandated ride from the city centre on the new Route 2020 metro line. Dubai reopened to international travellers in August and the Sheikh is confidently expecting 25 million visitors to Expo over the next six months. In a world ravaged by pandemic and climate change, a dazzling exhibition showcasing a brighter future for the planet is the shot of optimism we all need. But Expo Dubai is more than a six-month wonder. Paris Expo left us the Eiffel Tower in 1889; Philadelphia’s introduced popcorn and Heinz Tomato Ketchup to the world in 1876; London’s Great Exhibition, the first world Fair in 1851, gave us plate glass windows (although The Crystal Palace burned down). Dubai’s legacy will be the largest yet. When the show wraps up at the end of March, 80 per cent of this shiny sustainable city will be recycled as District 2020, a 5G-enabled Silicone Valley dedicated to developing themes explored at the Fair.

PERCEPTION-SHIFTING PORTALS Strong enough to stand unsupported but so light they can be pushed open with your hand, British starchitect Asif Khan’s trio of towering 21-metre gates are one of the fascinating puzzles of Expo. Made of ultra-light carbon fibre mesh in a design inspired by Arabic mashrabiya latticework, they are at once two-dimensional planes and three-dimensional objects while from certain angles they reflect the Expo logo. It took nine shipments to transport these big boys from Bavaria to Dubai but the illusion is worth it. Step through them into the future! ›

The transformation of historic buildings in Marbella’s old quarter signals a revival of true style in Marbella – and when it corresponds so perfectly to a new definition of quality and luxury, the result is something really special. WORDS MICH EL CRUZ PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF RHONE PROPERTY

La Ciudadela is also different from even the most luxurious hotel chains in that it is created by locals with a passion for their town, and a keenness to revive its heritage and pedigree. Survey the hotels with a keenly critical eye and you won’t see anything but a

talent for design and dedication to detail. In fact, each of the establishments is a fine example of tasteful renovation, blending modern comfort and taste with classical charm in an ambience of personable service. “Our mission throughout has been to create something special here; not just a series of hotels in renovated buildings, but a very special ambience in which you can really feel and experience the authentic heart

of this town,” says Miguel. “For this reason we were passionate about authenticity, achieving an all-important balance between modernising and maintaining original features and ambience, and meanwhile also creating functional establishments that meet the practical, technical and luxury requirements of our time.” In treating each of the hotels as a unique project, Miguel and his dedicated team have indeed added four new gems to Marbella’s crown.

MAISON ARDOIS Named after a family once prominent in Marbella’s erstwhile iron ore mining industry, Maison Ardois is the first in the series of beautiful boutique hotels within the collection of La Ciudadela Marbella. It is situated right in the heart of the historic quarter, on Calle Ancha, and yet just a short walk to each of the other hotels in the group – making it possible to sample the different restaurant experiences they offer. At Maison Ardois, this is Thaissence, a restaurant that offers Thai-Peruvian fusion built around fresh local produce and additional Spanish-Andalusian inspiration. The design of Maison Ardois is clean and has a fresh contemporary feel in spite of its inspiring historical setting and classic details, which have been highlighted within the décor with such skill. “Ours are luxury hotels not for people looking for glamour and ostentation but for authentic experiences,” says Miguel. “We want this to be a place where fond memories are made and people come back to create new ones.” As you sit in the indoor restaurant, the terrace, one of the intimate courtyards or survey Marbella’s townscape from the roof terrace, it seems this is easy to do. › WWW.ESSENTIALMAGAZINE.COM / 63

be seen. The fact that this is a very different building, and that it has been treated with the same sense of uniqueness and dedication, is evident the moment you enter. Modern amenities and 24hour check-in systems also prevail, but in combination with a highly personal renovation and decorative treatment that highlights the character of Hotel Santo Cristo, and gives it a unique ambience and appeal of its own. The tones here are blue and white where those of

Maison Ardois are earthy offset against crisp white walls, but as in all the establishments of La Ciudadela, the furnishings are bespoke and unique – indeed designed by the team itself and manufactured locally, augmented by individual pieces of international origin. More can be expected on the panoramic rooftop terrace that boasts some of the finest views in downtown Marbella, while at the La Bouganvilla restaurant the emphasis is on the quality of ingredients and skill in a creative, contemporary interpretation of the region’s much-loved cuisine. “Our philosophy is to source everything we can locally, applying the kilometrezero concept to a desire to be authentically local, though always embellished with international elements and inspiration,” says Miguel Cerván, the passionate force behind the Santo Cristo and Maison Ardois. With two more elegant old town hotels poised to open soon, La Ciudadela is already considered by many to be the icing on Marbella’s offering of luxury hotels and an embodiment of ‘new luxury’. e

SUSTAINABLE FASHION CAN HELP SAVE THE WORLD

Around 66 per cent of consumers value sustainability when purchasing luxury products, reports The Business Research Company (2020), while multi-brand online luxury shopping site, Lyst, has seen a 37 per cent increase in searches for sustainability-related items. Simultaneously, fast fashion retailers have seen a drop in sales (LIVEKINDLY, 2021), with shoppers increasingly aware of the link between their behaviours and global warming. The problem is so vast that individuals sometimes feel that they can’t make a difference, yet the future is not as bleak as they think. Many companies are making great strides in lowering their carbon footprint. Indeed, ‘Go green or go broke’ is the motto that any entity wishing to stand the test of time will have to adhere to. Read on to discover the advances being made in this sector. WORDS MARISA CUTILLAS

PLASTIC (NOT SO) FANTASTIC Approximately 8.8 million tonnes of mismanaged plastic enter the world’s oceans every year and the vast majority of it is singleuse. Discarded fishing nets are one of the most dangerous forms of plastic pollution since they injure or kill over 650,000 aquatic animals annually. California-based company, Bureo, has come up with a brilliant solution. Working alongside fishing communities in South America, the company collects, cleans, and shreds fishing nets in Chile, recycling them into NetPlus® – a material that provides supplemental income to local communities while also providing raw material for the wares of fashion companies

68 / OCTOBER 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

like Patagonia. The latter uses this material for hat brims. Swimwear brand RubyMoon also uses discarded fishing nets (and plastic bottles) to make their garments, while Swedish brand Isbörn uses fish traps for its ultra-sturdy jackets, each of which is meant to be worn by at least three people (expect to find three name tags on every item).

“Every free single industry sharing this Earth needs to look at itself and be responsible, mindful and at the same time still have a healthy business at the end of the day”

REGENERATIVE FARMING

Stella McCartney

Industrial farming and the chemicals used therein are another main cause of global warming. Imagine if the farming industry could switch from fossil fuel-intensive farming to organic, no-till, and low-till practices that create a healthy soil system and draw carbon into the ground. Fashion company, Patagonia, is definitely a standard-bearer in this regard, as it is currently piloting its first cotton crop in India on over 150 farms, aiming to rehabilitate soil, boost animal welfare, and enhance the lives of local communities. The brand uses virgin organic cotton (completely free of herbicides and pesticides), recycled cotton (taken from scraps left on factory floors), and various additional recycled materials – including polyester (which reduces the reliance on petroleum-based products), nylon (discarded from weaving mills), and down (diverted from landfills).

CIRCULAR BY DESIGN If we are to save our planet, we must put an end to the ‘throwaway’, single-season mentality when it comes to clothing. Simply designing an item that can be worn for various years is an important step in the right direction. International fashion brand, Eileen Fisher, is spearheading the ‘Circular by Design’ concept, which involves a variety of measures – including taking clothes back. The brand has collected over 1.6 million of its own pieces since 2009, for resale or remanufacture into new designs. They also specialise in simple, timeless configurations that don’t fall out of fashion. Around one-quarter of the items the company takes back is damaged, so its ‘Renew’ team deconstructs them and sews them into limited-edition pieces. The ‘Waste No More’ team, meanwhile, transforms other collected items into wall hangings, pillows, and other accessories. “Just imagine the impact if every company took their clothes back and turned them into new designs,” said company founder, Eileen Fisher.

Mycelium

70 / OCTOBER 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

A RESPECT FOR ANIMAL WELFARE The fashion industry has been notoriously cruel to animals in many ways, with practices such as mulesing subjecting animals to indescribable pain. It doesn’t have to be this way when a brand has a heart. Take Sheep Inc. – a company that assigns every person who buys one of their jumpers to the sheep its wool came from. Sweaters come with a digital NFC tag and customers are

sent regular news about ‘their sheep’. The brand complies with standards set by ZQ ( a prestigious wool certification standard that supports animal welfare, environmental sustainability, the use of quality fibre, traceability, and social responsibility). ZQ sheep graze freely on pastures and are well-fed, living healthy, natural, pain-free lives. Speaking of kindness to animals, check out Pangaia’s vegan puffer coat, made with stuffed flowers instead of

feather down. The jacket keeps wearers cosy in temperatures as cold as -20ºC!

MARVELLOUS MYCELIUM Another interesting fabric is MycoTEX, made of mycelium (the vegetative part of mushrooms). Mycelium is carbonnegative and can be naturally dyed to any hue. It is particularly useful for people with sensitive skin because it is naturally antimicrobial. Moreover,

mycelium requires very little water and energy to grow. The World Wildlife Organisation reports that one cotton T-shirt typically takes 713 gallons of water to make. A T-shirt made of mycelium requires only three gallons. There are many more materials being used to make biobased alternatives to popular products. Fashion house Pangaia is working alongside the scientific company, Kintra, to create a 100 per cent biodegradable alternative to polyester.

VEGAN LEATHER AND BIOBASED MATERIALS Leather is a co-product of the unsustainable meat industry, which accounts for around 14.5 per cent of all human-created greenhouse gases. The good news is that the vegan leather industry is going strong and has a predicted worth of $89 billion by 2025. Plastic-free vegan leather is the material of choice for fashion companies with a green heart, with sources including mushrooms and pineapple. One of the most popular natural textile fibres is Piñatex, made of pineapple

leaf fibre. It is currently used by brands like Hugo Boss, Po-Zu, and Nae.

TURNING GREENHOUSE GASES INTO HIGH FASHION Consider if the fashion industry could have a positive impact on global warming, instead of simply aiming to reduce its current carbon footprint. Regenerative farming is one step in this direction but there are many more – including the biomaterial AirCarbon, which is made by combining air and greenhouse gas to replace oil-

based materials like plastics. The technology is based on processes used by methane-loving ocean microorganisms, which create material inside their cells by covalently bonding carbon and oxygen dissolved in water. Covalent bonding is essentially the sharing of electron pairs between atoms. One brand that is using this chemical process to create minimalistic luxury bags and accessories is Covalent. The founders state that each product they sell is “a physical manifestation of greenhouse gases.”

BIOGARMENTRY: LIVING CLOTHES Another fascinating technology is biogarmentry – the use of living, photosynthetic cells that turn carbon dioxide into oxygen. One brand that has embraced this technology is Roya Aghighi, which makes clothes from algae with an aim of transforming consumers’ relationships to their clothing. To make the fabric, single-cell green algae is spun together with nano polymers to create a very fine, soft, linen-like fabric that is activated via exposure to sunlight. Instead of

74 / OCTOBER 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

washing these items, consumers spray them with water once a week, caring for them as they would a house plant. It makes sense considering these garments are literally alive.

NATURAL DYES Toxic synthetic dyes enter waterways, with the documentary RiverBlue stating that over 70 per cent of rivers in China are polluted owing to chemicals coming from textile and garment factories. Toxic dyes also pose an unacceptable health problem for the people who

work in these factories and for surrounding communities and they are capable of penetrating entire food chains. The use of natural dyes (and safe, non-metallic mordants that fix dye onto fabrics) is an important way to reduce pollution and diminish the amount of water used by fashion companies. One brand showing the industry how it’s done is DyeCoo (based in Weesp, near Amsterdam), which dyes fabric without any water at all. Instead, it uses carbon dioxide in the process. When CO2 is heated and pressurised, it becomes ‘supercritical’ (it enters

a state that is between liquid and gas). In this state it has a high solvent power, meaning it can easily penetrate into fabrics and dye them beautifully and vibrantly. Fashionistas with a green heart are probably buzzing with excitement about the many advances made in the sustainable fashion industry. From living clothing right through to regenerative farming, there are many innovations in an industry that has traditionally caused so much harm to the planet. Make

sure you are part of this exciting movement by foregoing fast fashion in favour of brands that show an authentic passion for making this world a better place for future generations.

COMPOSTABLE CLOTHING Imagine clothing that is fully biodegradable and compostable within just eight weeks. It is already a reality thanks to London-based brand, Vollebak, which has designed the ‘Plant and Algae T-Shirt’ from pulped

eucalyptus and beech obtained from sustainable forests. Once you’re done with this cool looking garment, bury it in the soil and it will completely break down in 12 weeks. Better yet, throw it into your home compost heap, where it will ‘disappear’ in just eight weeks. The shirt is printed with algae that change colour as time passes. The reason? “As the original source of all plant life on the planet (algae) consumes carbon dioxide and produces up to 80 per cent of the oxygen on Earth.” e

MCLAREN SPEEDTAIL

British supercar builder McLaren offers an almost bewildering number of products right now, but somewhere on the cutting edge of the range is the remarkable new Speedtail hybrid, one of the most powerful road cars ever built and good for over 1,000-horsepower. ll McLarens are striking designs, but as its name implies, the Speedtail has one standout feature – its elongated tail. The car is almost 60cm longer than that of a comparable McLaren model and it’s almost all at the gracefully tapering rear end. Tails like this have been found to enhance aerodynamics and increase stability and perhaps McLaren was inspired by the legendary long-tail Porsches that won Le Mans 24-hour races back in the 1970s. Fast as those racing Porsches were, they probably never exceeded the remarkable 403 km/h top speed of the McLaren Speedtail. Perhaps the second most fascinating element of this exciting new McLaren is the fact that you can take a couple of passengers along with you. Like the old F-1 model, the driver occupies a central seat with a passenger on either side. It’s unlikely that either passenger would want to spend that much time in their restricted spot, but at least the thrill of riding in a car like this would compensate for any discomfort. The doors swing outward and upward electrically and the driver faces a rather awkward manoeuvre across either passenger seat, though few enthusiasts would consider this any kind of chore! ›

ARES MODENA BESPOKE COACHBUILDER OPENS IN MARBELLA

Beyond even the most luxurious car brands in the world, ARES designs and builds your personal dream completely made to measure. WORDS MICHEL CRUZ PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF ARES

86 / OCTOBER 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

W

e are all familiar with those desirable, seductive supercars and limousines built to blend performance, luxury and status, but even they are relatively ‘off the shelf’. Naturally the colour, interior, tuning and detailing of such a car can be adjusted to suit your preference, but at the end of the day you’re still buying an existing design produced in series. Today, a growing number of top-end buyers want the

exclusivity and uniqueness of a limited series or even entirely bespoke car – something not seen in the automotive market for many a decade. It is a process given added impetus by the fact that the products of luxury car manufacturers have become increasingly accessible to the mass market. To own something truly unique has a little more effect these days, and it is this exclusivity that a new generation of buyers is looking for.

Fortunately there is a new generation of bespoke carmakers that do just that – create made-to-measure dream cars around their clients’ visions of perfection. “It’s a collaborative, creative process in which the design journey is as much fun as finally receiving your very own production car,” says Dany Bahar, co-founder and CEO of ARES, the Italian coachbuilder that is revolutionising the concept of what a luxury car is all about. ›

CREATING YOUR OWN CAR In other fields of the luxury market, buyers have far greater freedom to give shape to their dreams, be it through the building of a private home, the commissioning of artwork or jewellery, tailored fashion or the construction of your own yacht, but until now it did not extend to cars. In changing this, ARES is challenging the realms of possibilities open to lovers of all things automotive and taking the upper car segment into new levels of exclusivity. In reality, building cars this way is actually a tradition that goes back to the early days of the automotive industry, when wealthy owners bought the chassis (mechanical platform) of their choice and had renowned coachbuilders such as Vanden Plas, Mulliner, Vignale and

Figoni et Falaschi create one-off bodies complete with exquisitely handcrafted interiors. In this way, the vehicles in question ranged from private limousines and hunting cars to outlandish conveyances of the kind crafted by Saoutchik or more recently Zagato – now worth millions at auction. “To design a car out of series production is to create something unique and special,” says Dany, who with co-founder and Chairman Waleed Al Ghafari has revived the classic coach building tradition in a modern era. Indeed, many of the clients who commission their very own car from this boutique manufacturer are car enthusiasts and collectors. “The quality and uniqueness of the vehicles we make ensure their great investment value, as they

range from one-off pieces in the entire world to part of a limitedseries collection of 21 or at the most 24 driving works of art.”

HOW IT WORKS The production takes place at the state-of-the-art factory in Modena – heart of Italian sports car manufacture – but the private bespoke cars are configured at boutique studios in locations such as Milan, Kitzbühel, St. Moritz, Zürich, Porto Cervo, Miami, Munich, Modena, Dubai and now also Marbella, at the entrance to Puerto Banús. “We are present not in typical car dealership locations but where you will also find other luxurious products, such as jewellery, fashion, art and yachts,” says Dany, whose passion for what ARES call the Co-Create process is clear.

“The process begins by exploring exactly what the client has in mind, their personal vision of automotive perfection. This could be a retro-modern version of their favourite classic car or something completely new, and once we have a clear picture we develop a pre-study that ultimately leads to the selection of the so-called ‘donor car’ – the chassis, technological platform and engine upon which the new car is built – and then proceed with creating a one-off bodywork design that is the embodiment of everything you love about motoring. In other words, your perfect car!” Though hand-built by master craftsmen and fitted with the finest materials of your choice,

ARES cars also come with the latest technology, comfort, performance and safety – regardless of whether you order a 1950s-style sports car or an ultramodern one. You will see the whole process begin to take shape before your eyes, first with advanced graphics and VR technology, and ultimately ‘in the flesh’, when not only the exterior but also the dashboard, materials, tuning and seats literally designed around you become your vision made real. “When the car is almost ready, our clients come to Modena to be ‘fitted,” says Dany. “This relates both to the final tuning touches and control, as to the perfect setting and positioning of the driver’s seat.” In addition to such

unique, one-off pieces, ARES also presents a small collection of limited edition models such as the ARES Land Rover Defender Spec 1.2, the ARES Scrambler for BMW R nine T motorbike and its very own design, the classic ARES S1 Spyder – all present at the showroom in Puerto Banús. For not so much more than a ‘standard’ limousine or super sports car, you can own a bespoke limited series creation or indeed the car you have always dreamed of – your very own creation of motoring perfection! g Avenida de Julio Iglesias 103. LICENSED TO Daniel Craig roars onto cinema screens in his electric Aston Martin Valhalla this month, nearly two years late for his final outing as James Bond. But someone has taken over the wheel in his absence and she’s feisty, female and black… premieres No time to Die, the most PC Bond blockbuster yet. eet Nomi, the first black female Agent 007 – Bond’s replacement in the film, but not the franchise, despite a tabloid frenzy last summer over rumours that 33-year-old Br itish actress Lashana Lynch was to be Daniel Craig’s successor. The name’s still James Bond, not Jane. But he’s not the same man who strangled a ‘Bond girl’ with her bikini top in the sexist 80s (Sean Connery in Diamonds are Forever). “Bond is a wounded animal struggling with his role as a Double O. The world has changed,” to quote the director, Cary Joji Fukunaga. When the film opens, James is retired in Jamaica with a bad knee, prefers corduroy trousers to tuxes and drives a Landrover

Discovery around the island in the slow lane with his new wife ‘Ms Swann’ – never ‘Mrs Bond’ (Lea Seydoux reprising her character in 2015’s Spectre). Clues that the 25th Bond movie would be the most PC yet were dropped when Lynch, a Londoner of Jamaican descent, was cast as one of three Bond Woman (no one calls them Girls any more) and Fleabag creator Phoebe WallerBridge was brought in to make sure the film empowered them. She’s only the second female in the franchise’s 58 year history to have been allowed near a Bond screenplay. But James hasn’t gone soft, says Waller-Bridge: “All this talk of the way he treats women is b****cks. The important thing is that the film treats the

women properly. He doesn’t have to. He needs to be true to this character.” The trailers – all four of them – set a high bar for the costliest Bond film yet (and the longest), promising to keep us riveted to our seats for two hours and 43 minutes as our hero flies through the Unesco World Heritage streets of Matera in Italy, dives off a stone bridge on a bungee and vaults battlement walls on a Triumph Scrambler in a nod to Steve McQueen’s Great Escape. There are just as many twists and turns in the plot as Bond renews acquaintance with old time adversary Blofeld (Christoph Waltz) and pursues ‘a mysterious villain armed with dangerous new technology’ (Rami Malek).

THRILL “The world’s moved on Commander Bond, stay in your lane. You get in my way, I will put a bullet in your knee… the one that works.”

Ralph Fiennes returns as M, Naomie Harris as Moneypenny and Ben Whishaw as Q, CubanSpanish actress Ana de Armas adds lethal glamour as a CIA agent and the plot is packed with popcorn-dropping stunts in stunning locations. In one dramatic scene, Bond is trapped under a frozen lake in Norway while his new arch nemesis, a convincingly malevolent Malek, stands over him with a Kalashnikov. Will Bond be killed off this time? It’s been a source of much speculation but unlikely. The franchise makes too much money, although it’s been a long wait for a return on the film’s US$300 million investment. Delayed once when original director Danny Boyle quit over ‘artistic differences’, again when Craig injured his ankle during filming and several times by Covid, the red carpet was finally being laid out for the lavish world premiere at London’s Royal Albert Hall as went to press. Its six years since the last

Bond movie and we’re all gagging for some high-gloss escapism. Bring it on!

A MERCURIAL VILLAIN Rami Malek drew inspiration from the late Freddie Mercury for his role as supervillain Lyutsifer Safin, an anarchist ex-SPECTRE assassin. “I tried to imbue his character with something that made sense but might also be shocking and unnerving. I guess that may be a lesson I learned from Mr Mercury,” said the American actor who won an Oscar playing the Queen icon in Bohemian Rhapsody. “If it’s not original, then why bother?”

THE REAL 007 Behind the ass-kicking new Agent 007 is a ‘real’ woman with ‘weight issues and periods’. “I wanted Nomi to be someone with a past, rough around the edges, who has issues with her weight maybe, or her boyfriend,” said Lashana Lynch, last seen playing a fighter pilot in Captain Marvel (2019). “I looked for at least one moment in the script where the black members of the audience would nod their heads, tut-tutting at the reality but glad to see their real life represented. We even considered adding a scene where her character talks about having her period.”

immortalised in a documentary retrospective on his five-year stint, Being Bond, streamed on the Apple TV App prior to the world premiere. So who gets the keys to the stable of Aston Martins in the next Bond movie? Regé-Jean Page, Bridgerton’s dashing Duke of Hastings, is among the hunks hotly tipped but the jury’s still out.

BOWING OUT WITH A BANG After Spectre’s lacklustre reviews in 2015, Daniel Craig said he’d rather slash his wrists than play Bond again. But as his five-film run as Ian Fleming’s suave super-spy comes to an end, his view has mellowed. “While you’re doing it, the tendency is just to go, ‘Oh, you know, this is what it is’… But I’m incredibly proud and honoured to have been a part of it.” He should be. ANANODE ARMAS TIME TO DIE 96 / OCTOBER 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

‘Bond Girl’ is probably an unworthy term to describe a set of characters who have always been independent, ass-kicking women who gave as good as they got. Indeed, to this day, top actors from across the globe fight tooth and nail for this role and there are many good reasons why. Bond films never fail to impress, blending majestic cinematography with beautiful leads, luxurious interiors, and of course, the action that Britain’s most famous spy always delivers. This year, James Bond (played by Daniel Craig) will have a formidable woman by his side: Paloma, a guntoting, trailblazing CIA agent who will make 007’s mission a little easier. No Time to Die’s release date for Spain is October 1, 2021. WORDS MARISA CUTILLAS

WHY ANA? Ana de Armas was the ideal choice for Paloma owing to the depth of her previous roles. Paloma is powerful, but also flawed. Ana told Movie Web: “What matters most to me is representing women and female characters in an empowered, realistic, non-stereotypical way.” She loved getting into shape for the role, telling Cinema Blend: “I had gun training and learned the choreography for the scenes... It was a short but really intense immersion into the Bond universe, so I quickly transformed into a CIA agent.”

BOND FROM A FEMINIST PERSPECTIVE Daniel Craig was certainly on her wavelength; he asked Fleabag actor and writer, Phoebe Waller-Bridge to lend the script a more feminine perspective, tweaking the storylines and dialogue between characters. Waller-Bridge is the second woman in James Bond movie

history to be credited as a writer. Moreover, Paloma won’t be the only strong female character in the film. She will be joined by Nomi (the new Agent 007, played by Lashana Lynch) and Psychiatrist, Madeleine Swann (Léa Seydoux).

ANA AND DANIEL No Time to Die wasn’t the first time Ana de Armas and Daniel Craig worked together. They shone in Knives Out – a mystery film that was a huge hit. It was Ana’s biggest film to date, co-starring bigwigs like Jamie Lee Curtis and Chris Evans (Captain America). Ana plays a family patriarch’s gentle nurse. Despite the chance to work alongside such renowned actors, she initially thought she would turn down the role. The script described her character as ‘Latina and pretty’, a description she didn’t find very motivating. Luckily, she wrangled a copy of the script, discovering there was

much more to the character than meets the eye – and was instantly hooked.

BLADE RUNNER 2049 If Ana’s face looks familiar, it may be because she played the virtual woman who enamoured Ryan Gosling’s character in Robocop 2049. It was a challenging role, one that required her to combine the coldness of technology with the emotion of forming part of a new world order. The sparks flew with Gosling and her talent caught the eye of directors like Rian Johnson (Knives Out) and Cary Joji Fukunaga (No Time to Die). Recently, she has worked on various films – including Sergio, The Night Clerk, Deep Water, and Blonde. In the latter she plays legendary bombshell, Marilyn Monroe. Many would say she is the ideal choice; she has high doses of charisma and her facial structure is similar to that of the Some Like It Hot diva.

COPING WITH FAME Ana de Armas has a good head on her shoulders and this can probably be attributed to the fact that she didn’t have it easy as a child. She has told the press on more than one occasion that what she earns goes towards supporting her family – a duty she has taken on with grace. Knowing how difficult it is to build a career in Hollywood and being grateful for the difference she has made in her family’s life very much keeps her feet on the ground. “Fame may be the response to my work, but I don’t focus on that result. I want to think and put my energy into the journey. I always look for normalcy in my life and that’s what makes me the happiest. Maybe that’s the reason I feel like I’ve coped so well,” she told Harper’s Bazaar. If you’ve never seen an Ana de Armas film, I recommend starting with Knock Knock – a 2015 thriller that is funny and a little bit terrifying all at once. Ana plays one of two teens who knock on the door of a lonely millionaire (Keanu Reeves), embroiling him in a sadistic game that he is completely defenceless against. Ana may have been a little ‘green’ in the film, but her performance was a fine indicator of the depth and complexity that lies behind what Jamie Lee Curtis called “the most expressive eyes I have ever seen in my life.” e

CLOUD CUCKOO LAND BY ANTHONY DOERR From the Pulitzer Prize winning author of All the Light we Cannot See comes an epic story of hope and survival spanning centuries. Anna and Omeir are teenagers caught up in the siege of Constantinople in the 1400s. Zeno’s story follows him from his childhood as an immigrant orphan to his time as a POW in the Vietnam war and finally to old age where is helping children put on a play in a library. Seymour’s tragic story overlaps with Zeno’s with terrible consequences. Konstance is a child living in isolation in the future, hoping for a better life. All the stories are bound together by the ancient Greek myth of Cloud Cuckoo Land which tells of a shepherd trying to reach a utopia in the sky. It is, according to Doerr, “…part fairytale, part fool’s errand, part science fiction, part utopian satire…”. It is utterly compelling and a delight to read. 112 / OCTOBER 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

JOHN LYDON (AKA ROTTEN) seems to have lost a few friends after losing the SEX PISTOLS high court case to stop their songs being used in next year’s Pistol biopic TV series. The singer branded his former band mates as “greedy”, but many fans say this is good coming from someone who ‘sold out’, appeared on a reality

FOO FIGHTERS main man DAVE GROHL has penned a book about his life. The Storyteller: Tales of Life and Music lands on October 5 and is “a collection of memories of a life lived loud” including his times with KURT COBAIN and NIRVANA – could be an interesting read. More on the FACES reunion recordings; drummer KENNY JONES said, “We’ve done about 14 songs, it’s a mixture of stuff we never released and new stuff which is really wonderful. Rod (STEWART) is writing the lyrics and he’s really keen on it.” And the good news is there’s a tour being arranged. Remember MACY GRAY? After releasing a single earlier this year she is hoping to tour soon to help make up the cash she lost after buying a job lot of toilet paper. When

the panic buying started last year (apparently the Australians were responsible for this) she purchased around 900 Euros worth from China with the bright idea of selling it on. She had a shock when it arrived “because they sent just the paper – the little cardboard rolls inside were not there.” e

VILLA VICTORIA

A MODERNIST MARVEL IN MARBELLA

As a ‘young’ town, Marbella is not known for its listed buildings, but tucked away in a very private spot overlooking Aloha’s fairways, La Concha and the sea is a spectacular new villa that recalls the iconic modern architecture of an earlier era. illa Victoria is a discovery – an unexpected delight hidden within a personal oasis. Situated within a gated community flanking Aloha Golf Club, this is a discreet masterpiece that reveals its imposing style and captivating ambience once the gate opens and you walk down steps over a Japanese pond to the enticing front entrance. The property blends Asian Zen elements with the kind of composition and layout that hints to the early, halcyon days of modern

architecture – an era of unequalled creativity and purity of style. Known as the Modernist architectural school, it has produced some of the most beautiful homes ever built, and Villa Victoria clearly draws its inspiration from this genre. That said, it is far beyond a tribute, for this villa is a stunning modern home in its own right that takes Modernist design elements to the next level, employing the latest materials and technologies to produce a 21st century property that is as beautiful as it is unique. ›

THE EMBODIMENT OF TODAY’S STYLE

Measuring over 900m2 of interior space, this superlative modern villa built on the site of two previous ones reveals a deviation from the now familiar contemporary concept that perfectly captures what discerning buyers want from a home today: a personal, private living environment that captures the essence of style and comfort within a natural, feel-good setting. Natural stone blends with the low-slung architecture

of Villa Victoria – which consists of a ground floor and lower level. The large openplan living room flows on to a dining area and superb kitchen. Comfortingly, the predominance of white has been replaced with homely natural shades that range from soft creams through to brown and brass. The vaulted ceiling adds a unifying element to a room that is welcoming, refined and also rich in design detail – a perfect example of which, are the two built-in wine cabinets

framing the elegant corridor that links the main living area to a private office and beautifully styled games room with home cinema area. The corridor forms a continuum beyond the entrance hall in the private wing, and on both sides of the house it looks out on to a sculpted olive tree. WELCOME TO THE AGE OF

BIOPHILIC

DESIGN

Architectural magazines are awash with the colour green and indeed, ecoeverything is the zeitgeist of the post-COVID age. Many people who once had a devil-may-care attitude towards environmentalism have awakened to the vital bond we share with nature and they are turning to biophilic design to strengthen it. Biophilic design, in its most basic sense, involves the incorporation of natural elements into architecture and home interiors, yet its scope extends much further than simple embellishment. If green is your favourite colour and you are keen on leveraging the power of nature to make you healthier and happier, read on. WORDS MARISA CUTILLAS

136 / OCTOBER 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

WHY BIOPHILIA?

“We will never be truly healthy, satisfied, or fulfilled if we live apart and alienated from the environment from which we evolved” Stephen R. Kellert

Study after study has shown that human beings benefit deeply simply from being in close connection with the outdoor environment. Working in an office with indoor plants, for instance, has been found to boost performance and creativity, reduce stress, improve immunity, and promote wellness. A landmark Danish study, meanwhile, found that people who were exposed to greenery had a 55 per cent lower risk of developing mental health problems later in life than those who did not connect with nature. As much as we may be aware of the benefits of the Great Outdoors, most of us spend around 90 per cent of our time indoors. It makes sense, therefore, to ‘steal’ a little of nature’s majesty and bring it into our homes.

WHO’S LOVING IT? Companies like Etsy, Google, and Airbnb have embraced biophilic design via skylights, natural patterns in wallpaper and décor, and even fake window insets with video screens that mimic the

appearance of skylights. One oncology centre in Anaheim, California, is oriented in such a way that patients can always look out onto greenery and other health centres have a treehouse-like design that instantly embraces patients in the majesty, beauty, and immense calm that natural surroundings can bring. The biophilic movement is being adopted by entire cities as a means of reducing pollution and battling global warming. A 2016 report from the engineering firm Arup states that buildings should all be covered with greenery to reduce CO2 levels, reduce noise, and keep urban areas cooler. The Biophilic Cities project, which “facilitates a global network of partner cities working collectively to pursue the vision of a ‘natureful’ city within their unique and diverse environments and cultures,” is successfully demonstrating how different cities have recently incremented citizens’ access to green spaces via parks, green facades, and rooftop gardens.

THREE CATEGORIES OF BIOPHILIC DESIGN Biophilic design is divided into three categories: Z Nature in the Space – The direct presence of nature in interiors or exteriors in the form of plants, trees, water, a breeze, light, shadows, scents, and more. Z Natural Analogues – The use of natural materials and natureinspired colours, patterns, shapes in building design, facades, interior décor schemes, furniture, and small decorative touches. Z Nature of the Space – The incorporation of spatial elements commonly encountered in nature (think stepping stones or a wooden platform over a shallow pond, spiral staircases, mezzanines, and atriums), expansive views, and the creation of refuges for the senses (for instance, a reading nook with a ceiling that is covered in hanging vines, a spa-like bathroom dressed in textured stone, a cool ‘relaxation cave’, a chair that ‘embraces’ or ‘envelops’ you, or a canopy bed). 138 / OCTOBER 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

It is easy to see how far-reaching biophilic design concepts are and the extent to which they have already influenced modern art and architecture. Just a few ideas you may find appealing for your own home include: Z Adding a water fountain to your garden Z Creating an open floorplan, knocking down walls, or converting opaque walls into sliding glass doors or floor-to-ceiling glass walls Z Incorporating design elements that imitate patterns in nature – for instance, the gentle ripple of waves, the spiral design of a seashell or the gentle curve of a blade of grass Z Stimulating the senses (including the sense of touch) by choosing textures such as rock, stone, and wood for furniture, walls, floors, and décor pieces Z Growing a courtyard garden, green wall, and flower beds by your window sill Z Using wood for walk-in shower floors and shower benches ›

AIRFLOW AND LIGHT

BUILDING A SENSE OF MYSTERY

Two important ‘biophilic patterns’ belonging to the ‘Nature in the Space’ category cannot be physically touched yet they can make a huge difference to our wellbeing. They are: Z Thermal and Airflow Variability: mimicking natural environments through relative humidity, subtle changes in air temperature, and the feel of air flowing against one’s skin Z Dynamic & Diffuse Light: leveraging different intensities of light and shadow that vary throughout the day, taking into account the way that light changes from season to season

Another attractive element of biophilic design is part of the ‘Nature of the Space’ category. It taps into the human passion for mystery. It advocates for the use of partially hidden views and other sensory structures that pique our curiosity and entice us to travel deeper into a space to investigate it. Thus, an outdoor swimming pool may have a ‘cave’ that swimmers feel compelled to swim into and explore; a garden might have a labyrinth that seeks to be solved (watch out for the minotaur!); an archway may give glimpses of an appealing outdoor terrace and secret garden that begs exploration. As stated in Interface (Ryan, 2016), “Environmental psychologists have

The Spheres in Seattle: a workspace that is home to over 40,000 plants from 30 countries

140 / OCTOBER 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

found that Mystery conditions engender a strong pleasure response within the brain that may be a similar mechanism to that of anticipation in that we are guessing what may be around the corner. Mystery conditions typically improve preference for a space, heighten curiosity, increase interest in gaining more information, and enhance other biophilic conditions.” You can incorporate the tenets of biophilic design into your own home by undertaking major

renovations (for example, heightening ceilings or knocking down walls to allow light to flow freely through common living areas), making small design changes (for instance, replacing your current bed with a wooden canopy bed), or adding small decorative elements to your interiors (think seashells, wallpaper with floral motifs, or reclaimed wood statement pieces). All these measures can help you feel immersed in nature and enraptured by its beauty. e

156 / OCTOBER 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

SYMPTOMS OF SEPARATION ANXIETY IN DOGS AND CATS Dogs suffering from separation anxiety can display an array of negative behaviours – including barking, whining, chewing on furniture/clothing/other items, defecating, and urinating indoors, and attempting to escape the home. Some dogs can actually hurt themselves while trying to escape or break free from a crate. Cats, meanwhile, can soil the house, groom themselves excessively, lose hair, vomit, pace, become more vocal, display aggressive behaviour, withdraw and hide, and/or tremble. It is important to see your veterinarian if your pet has these symptoms. As is the case with humans, any type of anxiety is serious because it can lead to health problems like gastrointestinal and skin issues, as well as injuries (for instance, when pets chew on or swallow things they shouldn’t). Moreover, all these symptoms can be compatible with other health issues. For instance, a pet with a UTI, kidney disease, or age-related arthritis may urinate indoors. Pets should never be punished because of anxietyrelated behaviours.

ANXIETY CAN BE MORE THAN ANGER If your dog chews on your slippers or your cat urinates in your bed,

don’t presume their behaviour is the result of human-style reasoning. They probably engaged in these acts because they were anxious, not because they wanted to take revenge on you for leaving them alone at home. Take note, as well – senior pets can be more prone to separation and other types of anxiety because of the effect that ageing has on their brain.

NATURAL APPROACHES TO PET ANXIETY Your vet may recommend that your pet undergo behavioural training, which uses positive reinforcement to promote specific behaviours. With separation anxiety, the desensitisation approach is often recommended. This involves leaving your pet for increasingly longer periods of time. For instance, you may start off by leaving the home for just a few seconds, followed by a few minutes, an hour, and eventually, a few hours. The key is to get your pet used to the idea that no matter how long you are gone, you will always return. For both dogs and cats, exercise can help soothe nerves and reduce stress hormone levels. Healthy dogs with no underlying medical conditions should ideally enjoy two long walks with time off-leash so they can practise their running, leaping, and jumping skills. For indoor cats, a clever labyrinth and

obstacles placed at various heights can get their hearts racing and keep them entertained for hours. For some pets, gadgets such as automatic ball throwing machines can keep them busy until their excess energy is expended.

SUPPLEMENTS AND MEDICATION If behavioural approaches do not work, your veterinarian may suggest supplements (synthetic pheromones or L-theanine) as the first line of action. L-tryptophan (for reducing aggression and clinginess) and Alpha-casozepine (to reduce fear and anxiety) may also be recommended. A final choice if the problem does not improve or gets worse, is medication. Tricyclic antidepressants, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, and benzodiazepines (used by humans for a range of issues ranging from anxiety to depression) may be prescribed under strict supervision. When it comes to anxiety in pets, patience is key. Behavioural and supplemental treatments may take time to work, so be open to trying out different approaches. Aim to tackle the problem with a natural approach first, with a view to reassuring your pet that regardless of how long your day has been, you will always be back to feed and pamper them and to provide them with the physical activity they need to be their best, calmest selves. e

weeks, through a ritual of day and night, bringing luminosity, energy and softness to the face. For the day, LA SÈVE DES GLACIERS revitalises the skin with a combination of hydrating agents which provide instant radiance. This treatment introduces a new Chrono-Light cocktail that acts as dermal light therapy, boosting the skin’s metabolism and repairing UV damage.

Sturgeon DNA and essential minerals such as magnesium, manganese and selenium hydrate and vitalise, while the plants of the phyto-alpine garden and oat extract smooth, balance and soften. LA SOURCE DES GLACIERS is the treatment for skin renewal at night. During the hours of rest, a new generation of triple rejuvenation system acts on the surface and the deepest layers of the skin. It includes PHAs, a biological exfoliant that

provides extreme softness which closes pores and firms the skin’s texture. Another treatment for the night is the LE NECTAR DES GLACIERS that hydrates, repairs and regenerates the complexion. For the first time, not only DNA and RNA, but also glacier water and a royal jelly peptide, are encapsulated for greater ingredient distribution. Working in perfect harmony with the majestic Essence of Bees Complex, it invigorates and renews the skin.

EXCLUSIVE AND AUTHENTIC Quintessence des Glaciers is a limited edition treatment, with 500 units per year, presented in an exclusive case designed by Didier Guillon, President and Artistic Director of the Valmont Group. The 2021 edition is inspired by the New York art deco movement of the 1920s, when geometric, stylised and clean lines represented a rebirth of the almost futuristic decoration of the city’s architecture. Each limited edition of La Quintessence Des Glaciers is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity, numbered, and with a message signed by the founders of the company. back to CONTENTS A person with strong emotional wellbeing has a healthy inner ability to manage life on life’s terms. Whether it’s stress, financial problems, a relationship break-up, trauma, illness, a bereavement, they always seem to cope with everything in an admirable way. Being emotionally strong means having the right tools in your emotional toolbox – and knowing how to use these tools. WORDS DAVID HURST

MAJOR SIGNS OF STRONG EMOTIONAL WELLBEING

Z LEARN FROM MISTAKES Someone with emotional strength lives by the mantra: ‘There’s no such thing as a bad thing, only things to learn from.’ By looking at mistakes as learning exercises we save ourselves from the negative emotional impact of remorse, regret, anxiety and guilt. A person with healthy emotional wellbeing knows they can learn from anything – and so they keep on growing emotionally and getting stronger. From then on if something similar

162 / OCTOBER 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

happens, they will increasingly and instinctively know the best way to handle it. This is for themselves as well as for anyone who seeks their guidance.

Z LET GO Knowing certain things are out of our control means that acceptance comes so much quicker. When we have acceptance, we can move on – and that means we’re not burning up with negative emotions trying to fix something or someone that is really out of our hands.

Emotionally strong people know that there is one thing that is always in their control. That’s our own attitude: how we respond to any situation. With greater energy due to not using it up on futile things, we will then have a clearer mind to deal with anything that is in our scope. This also means we will have more time to relax, which is another thing emotionally healthy people know they need to do every day. It will all make for better sleep too – and that clearly benefits our day-to-day emotional wellness.

Z LIVE IN THE MOMENT

Z FIND FORGIVENESS

“Caretake this moment. Immerse yourself in its particulars. Respond to this person, this challenge, this deed. Quit evasions. Stop giving yourself needless trouble. It is time to really live; to fully inhabit the situation you happen to be in now.” Greek philosopher Epictetus said this around 2,000 years ago and it is just as important today. Avoiding problems or anything that needs to be done only means they will fill you up, and make you feel heavy inside. But by living in the moment and one day at a time we can deal with and do whatever is there in front of us. This means learning to live by love and not fear, which is how emotionally healthy people live.

Anyone with strong emotional wellbeing knows that finding forgiveness is not only positive for the world around them – but that it’s something they are giving to themselves too. It’s quite rightly been said: “Holding on to a resentment against someone is like drinking poison, and then waiting for that other person to die…” Frequently, people are furious with someone. Yet the person they have the anger towards isn’t feeling a thing! So without forgiveness, we are destroying our emotional wellbeing. Emotionally healthy people feel connected with other people (and nature). They care about others and will always listen to understand – even if they firmly disagree. By swiftly realising and dealing with a resentment we boost our emotional wellbeing. We get rid of the power a resentment holds over us. That potency can then be for something positively healthy.

Z BE OPTIMISTIC Someone who’s emotionally strong will continually be directing their thoughts to positives. Focusing on abundance and all there is in life can only boost emotional wellbeing. It also means they are instinctively optimistic. They will realise all that is good that’s given to us in life, and this creates an energetic feeling of optimism for the present as well as for the future.

Z HAVE HEALTHY BOUNDARIES Keeping a healthy boundary comes naturally for anyone with emotional wellbeing. Having emotional

wellbeing means you have healthy self-esteem, meaning you value yourself. You know self-love and that means healthy boundaries form easily. Everybody needs a healthy boundary – to keep the space that lets us be our true self. Healthy emotional people also have healthy boundaries about themselves: they will take care of themselves, eat well, exercise, sleep well, think kind thoughts… This means they are at their best to be there for others who need them too. This all helps give life a sense of meaning – and from having a sense of meaning, we always get happiness. g David Hurst is a Wellbeing Coach with four books published on emotional and mental health recovery, including 12 Steps To 1 Hero and The Anxiety Conversation. INSPARYA HAIR COMPANY

LAUNCHES IN MARBELLA

164 / OCTOBER 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

The percentage of men with moderate-to-extensive hair loss ranges from around 16 per cent in men aged 18-29 to 53 per cent in men aged 40 to 49. While some men are happy to go hairless and smooth, others find that their self-esteem can be affected and they seek effective, lasting, safe solutions. Insparya, recently launched on the Golden Mile, offers an array of treatments for hair loss. The clinic is one of seven in Portugal and Spain and its team (comprising over 300 professionals) has carried out over 40,000 transplants. I recently interviewed Insparya’s International Medical Director, Dr. Carlos Portinha, who enlightened me on the treatments the clinic offers. WORDS MARISA CUTILLAS PHOTOGRAPHY KEVIN HORN

FUE HAIR TRANSPLANTATION WITH A DIFFERENCE

Insparya’s star treatment is Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) – which involves transplanting follicular units (groups of follicles) to required areas with a natural result. Dr. Portinha explains, “We implant over 4,000 follicular units a day (a total of around 10,000 follicles/hairs) per transplant.” To get a good idea of how much hair this is, consider that the average person with hair loss in the entire mid-upper section of their head, would need at least two transplants (or around 8,000 units). “We always tell our patients with a good donor area that we can implant around 4,000 units but we never stop at this number and sometimes we can complete around 5,000. We prefer to be cautious and avoid inflated claims.” The Doctor expresses concern when he sees ads promising ‘limitless transplantation’. He elaborates, “There are limits to every transplant for two reasons. The

first is time. Each intervention takes approximately six hours thanks to our dedicated technology and our Dual Extraction Device, which allows us to transplant double the number of units in half the time. The second factor is the quality and quantity of follicular units the patient has available. Moreover, the extraction zone needs time (between four to six months) to heal.”

FUE TRANSPLANTATION FOR BEARDS AND EYEBROWS

If you have overplucked your eyebrows and you wish they were fuller, you have a congenital absence of eyebrows, you wish to recover from burns or accidents, or you have a beard that has hairless patches or that isn’t as lush as you’d like it to be, know that FUE transplants can be used on these areas, with beautiful results. “Because far less hair is needed (between 100 and 500 follicles are transplanted per brow), the process is quicker and only one session is required.”

INSPARYA HAIR SCIENCE

One factor that puts Insparya on its own level in the industry is its Research & Development Department, which is divided into two areas: Technology and Biomedicine. “The first is focused on devices that will make transplantation faster and less invasive. For instance, we are developing a robotic device that we hope will be able to transplant hair at the same rate and with the same perfection as human beings do within two or three years.” R&D is also conducting research into stem cells: “We are using stem cell technology to extract a small number of units – 100, for instance – which could be used to grow around 10,000 new clusters.” The technique would significantly reduce the size of the extraction site (some people do not have enough hair to transplant) and enable doctors to work much faster. ›

The Insparya team has also developed a Low Level Laser Therapy helmet, which stimulates circulation and the production of quality hair by follicular units thanks to an FDAapproved low-level laser. Insparya Marbella’s Director, Dr. José Carlos Caballero, tells me that the Clinic already has various appointments lined up. It

is exciting, indeed, to form part of a seven-clinic organisation with a staff boasting over 12 years of experience and a visionary R&D team that is ready to take hair transplantation to the next level. g Urb. Lomas de Río Verde, 152A, Marbella. Tel: 900 696 020. www.insparya.es

PERSONAL STRATEGIES TO

INCREASE YOUR LIFESPAN Having dedicated my career to helping people live their best possible lives, constantly pushing back and challenging the limits of our own human potential, I can say with great certainty that if we can incorporate a few key principles into our mindset, then we can not only extend our Health Span, but also our eventual Lifespan. Let’s take a closer look. WORDS DR TIM ERRINGTON DC CFMP

I

think we all know intuitively that if you make certain lifestyle changes you can elevate your state of health. However, few people actually realise just how amazing the body’s capacity for healing and rejuvenation actually is. With a certain focus, and by developing the right mindset, most of us can in fact elevate our lives to levels that previously would have been thought impossible. I believe we need to operate from four fundamental mindsets. Abundance Mindset – If we believe that health is limited

168 / OCTOBER 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

and must surely fail as we age, then this is exactly what will happen. If we examined our DNA we would see that our genes are exactly the same as the day we were born, meaning we have enormous potential for healing and regeneration. It’s how these genes are read and interpreted that makes the difference and if we create a nurturing environment for our genes, then they will express themselves towards health and vitality. Self Determination Mindset – We truly are in control of our own destinies. If something

isn’t working, we have the power to change it. Growth Mindset – We must avoid the traps of social conditioning which leads to a fixed mindset and acceptance that disease is inevitable as we age. Longevity Mindset – It shocks me how few people have this mindset. Maybe you’re not concerning yourself with living as long as possible, but it’s definitely worth focusing on maximising your health span, extending those healthy years of joy and purpose.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT? With the Biotech advances that will soon arrive in the future, we will eventually have the knowledge and ability to dramatically extend our health spans and thereby our lifespans considerably. For those of you who enjoy life as much as me this is hugely exciting, but there is one huge caveat, we have got to be in the game to win the game. I’m 60 going on 40, and if I’m going to be able to benefit from the advances that are coming over the next three decades, I simply have to keep myself in good shape. So, what’s my plan? Well, I personally have an arsenal of strategies that I employ to improve my own health, probably too many for this article. But what I can do is run through what I call my ‘nonnegotiables.’

HERE ARE SOME OF THE THINGS THAT I DO TO NURTURE MY GENES AND PRESERVE MY HEALTH. Z I make sure I do my 1012,000 steps a day, usually at a fair pace to raise my heart rate. Walking the dog and using a cross-trainer make this pretty easy to achieve. Z I look after my physical structure and alignment, ensuring I challenge my body to constantly build strength and flexibility. Remember, weight bearing joints that are out of alignment will wear out. Look after your knees and hips and find a good chiropractor or osteopath for your spine. Yoga definitely works for me. Don’t allow yourself to stiffen up; remember, we’re playing the ‘long game’ here.

170 / OCTOBER 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

Z Having been a vegetarian for many years I started to miss meat. Now I follow a mostly plant-based diet with piles of leafy greens, moderate amounts of fish, and I have meat only on the days I work out. This has helped me limit my meat consumption and also stay consistent with my exercise regime. Z I keep my intake of sugar and simple carbs to an absolute minimum and gave up sweets years ago. Insulin resistance is a modern plague and is the number one driver of high blood pressure, diabetes and accelerated ageing. Z Unhealthy oils are banned from our house as are pretty much all processed foods. Extra Virgin Olive Oil is the order of the day with Coconut Oil for high temperature cooking.

Z Calorie restriction is closely associated with longevity so I try to live the Japanese way of ‘Hara Hachi Bu’, meaning to quit eating before you are completely full. I also skip breakfasts most days and I definitely keep my BMI in the optimal range. I do slip up, quite often actually, being only human, but my mindset brings me back on track. Z Stressing the body and mind definitely helps them stay strong through the process of ‘hormesis’. Cold showers and hot saunas definitely help, as do short, sharp, high intensity workouts. Z I move as much as possible. I read somewhere that our ancestors moved about 200 times more than we do today, and shocking as it may seem, I think this is probably true. I have a little regime of exercises that

I do throughout the day – you know push-ups, ab-rolling, foamrolling – that sort of thing. Z Supplements – Daily I take Vitamin D and Vitamin K, and a good shot of natural Turmeric & Ginger. I make my own probiotic drink (Kombucha) to ensure I have a healthy gut and once a month I make a bone broth to ensure I get all the fantastic collagen from the bone marrow. Z Finally, quality sleep is definitely a non-negotiable. This is when your body heals,

regenerates, makes nerve connections and a host of other vital actions. It is probably THE most important factor and shouldn’t be compromised. What’s next? I’ve been following the research and certain compounds are showing enormous promise in delaying the ageing process. I’m paying particular attention to Resveratrol, NMN and Metformin and I believe that I shall soon be incorporating

these into my daily regime. Does all this make me a health nut? Probably, compared with most people, but I’ve gradually incorporated these simple steps into my lifestyle over time, and it seems easy and quite natural. My goal? Simply to be still around AND HEALTHY ENOUGH to take advantage of the health breakthroughs that I see coming over the next couple of decades. I fully intend to demonstrate that 100 years old really can be ‘the new 60.’ e

BATTLING LACTOSE INTOLERANCE It is estimated that around 68 per cent of people in the world have lactose malabsorption, as reported by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases in the UK. When lactose malabsorption produces specific symptoms – including nausea, bloating, diarrhoea, cramps, and gas – it is referred to as lactose intolerance – a condition that is not to be confused with milk allergies. These symptoms usually start within half an hour to two hours of consuming foods with lactose. Being lactose intolerant does not mean you can never enjoy milk products, but you may need to experiment until you discover your personal dairy intake limits. WORDS MARISA CUTILLAS

Your small intestine cannot digest lactose if it has low levels of the digestive enzyme, lactase. The latter normally breaks down lactose into two simple sugars – glucose and galactose – which are absorbed into the bloodstream through the intestinal wall. In individuals who are lactose intolerant, lactose moves directly into the colon, where it reacts with bacteria, thus causing an array of symptoms. Scientists at the University of California - Los Angeles have found that there is a specific genetic mutation that is present in lactose intolerant people. This mutation was found across adults of different ethnicities (African, Asian, and European), which revealed that it was very old. Researchers said, “We believe that the variant we identified in patients is the original form of the gene – which (subsequently) mutated to tolerate milk products when early humans adopted dairy farming. This suggests that everyone was originally lactose intolerant.”

172 / OCTOBER 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

Milk-like products from alternative sources

WHAT CAUSES LACTOSE INTOLERANCE?

TYPES OF LACTOSE INTOLERANCE There are three types of lactose intolerance: primary, secondary, and developmental. In primary lactose intolerance, babies start their lives producing the required amount of lactase (since babies obtain their nutrition from milk). As they start weaning and replacing milk with other foods, lactase production decreases. When lactase levels decrease sharply, digesting dairy products can become problematic. Secondary lactose intolerance can occur if the small intestine suddenly decreases lactase production after an illness, injury, or surgical procedure. In developmental lactose intolerance, babies are born with a complete absence of lactase activity. This occurs when a baby’s mother and father pass a specific gene variant. This problem can also affect premature babies.

RISK FACTORS FOR LACTOSE INTOLERANCE The specific risk factors for this condition include: Z Adulthood (simply growing older). Z Having diseases that affect the small intestine such as celiac disease, Chrohn’s disease, or severe diarrhoeal illness. Z Receiving certain treatments (for conditions such as cancer). Z Ethnicity (the condition is more common in people of Hispanic, American Indian, Asian, and African descent). Z Genetics (having a lactose intolerant parent can increase your chances of having the same issue).

THE DANGERS OF LACTOSE INTOLERANCE If you have symptoms of lactose intolerance, it is a good idea to see your doctor so the latter can formulate a prevention plan. This condition may predispose you to low calcium intake (since the number of lactose-free foods is limited) so you need to ensure you are obtaining enough of this nutrient from other sources. Lactose intolerance may lead to reduced bone density and fragility fractures when it is accompanied by the avoidance of dairy foods. As stated in a study (Hodges, 2019) published in the journal Nutrients, “multiple public health organisations recommend that all individuals— including those who are lactose intolerant—consume three servings of dairy per day to ensure adequate nutrient intakes and optimal bone health.” The researchers also stated that people who identify themselves as lactose-intolerant may mistakenly attribute abdominal symptoms to milk intolerance.

It is therefore important for doctors to diagnose patients with symptoms using tests such as the hydrogen breath test, which can reveal the existence or absence of authentic lactose maldigestion.

LACTOSE INTOLERANCE MANAGEMENT Although lactose intolerance cannot per se be prevented, its symptoms and effects can be ameliorated with dietary changes. These include opting for low-lactose dairy products such as aged cheese, cultured yoghurt, and lactose-free dairy products. You should also keep up your calcium intake for bone strength. Top sources of calcium include leafy green vegetables (such as cabbage, broccoli, and kale), nuts, fish with edible bones (like sardines, salmon, and pilchards), tofu, and soya beans. Check with your dietician or family doctor, since they may recommend that you also take combined Vitamin D and calcium supplements. e WWW.ESSENTIALMAGAZINE.COM / 173

gather to celebrate the premiere of Granados and Ceibas at Palo Alto, one of the most exclusive and vibrant residential communities on the Costa del Sol.

GRANADOS AND CEIBAS Comprising of 60 new apartments, Granados is built at the highest point of Palo Alto, providing residents with exceptional panoramic views

over the Mediterranean Sea and the Sierra de las Nieves National Park. Ceibas is a smaller exclusive community with only ten apartments set within a garden community that also enjoys commanding views within the gated privacy of the country club. Designed by VillarroelTorrico, the stylish new apartments are built to the highest specification, with quality Porcelanosa finishes throughout. The Palo Alto South masterplan was also unveiled at the poolside event where guests enjoyed

canapés and Champagne, listening to the DJ play his evening set against a backdrop of an idyllic Mediterranean sunset.

A DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT PHILOSOPHY The Palo Alto development is centred around one principle, providing ‘Naturally Modern Living’, and its influences can be found throughout the entire masterplan. Blending seamlessly into the lush green countryside, surrounded by the mountains of the Sierra

de las Nieves National Park, the beautifully designed highend, spacious apartments, penthouses and villas offer luxury, comfort and the connection to a community, creating a new destination in Ojén. “Curating the perfect lifestyle for our owners is very important, incorporating all the best that Marbella and the Costa del Sol has to offer, all experienced against the backdrop of our phenomenal panoramic views, encompassing the Mediterranean Sea to the edge of the charming Andalusian mountain village of Ojén and the surrounding

GIVING SHAPE TO YOUR IDEAL HOME AND LIFESTYLE The apartments and penthouses that form part of Granados and Ceibas are designed, built and landscaped by the developer, but beyond that owners are given flexibility, offering customisation at their new property. “It’s not just a question of décor, materials and finishes either,” says Matias, “but also includes the choice to adjust the configuration of your kitchen for instance.” The team uses the latest technology in this customising process, so that 180 / OCTOBER 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

ost people buying property on the Costa del Sol today look for a newly built modern home. The bulk of buyers opt for a stylish new ready-made property, but invariably make concessions to what would have been their ideal home in Marbella. It is with this age-old conundrum in mind that experienced German developer Sascha Falk and General Manager Tony Parrado set out to develop a new concept. “One of the prime factors in property development is location, and when we found an ideal setting for a quality project we knew that we wanted to create something special here – something that is not only stylish, modern and highend but also offers buyers a new alternative,” says Sascha Falk. ›

The result is an innovative approach to designing and constructing homes that allows for a greater degree of flexibility than hitherto has been possible. Normally, a project is defined early on in terms of its content, architectural design and features, and since this also includes layout and a 184 / OCTOBER 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

large measure of finishing and detailing, the end product is traditionally a fait accompli with little room for change. In recent years there has been a marked transition to offering buyers greater flexibility and choice when it comes to the materials, finishing and also details of their new property,

and this has come to be known as ‘personalising’ your new off-plan home. The earlier in the construction process you buy, the more freedom of movement you have, but even though great strides have been made the concept still falls short of the creative flexibility many homebuyers yearn for.

CREATE YOUR OWN NEW HOME With the development and construction experience that both Sascha Falk and Tony Parrado bring to the table, a further evolution of this trend was developed that allows the buyer an unprecedented level of freedom to create their own new property – giving them every opportunity to make it their very personal and unique dream home. Having gone out of their way to design a prime gated community of 44 sea view apartments where even the ‘standard’ offering is eyecatchingly refreshing and refined, the team behind Ocean View prepared the canvas for something truly exceptional – a way of life that begins as the signature entrance gates glide open and you enter. Tasteful design, proportioning and the use of quality stone to complement the light-toned architecture are just the beginning of a sense of arrival that’s hard to beat. ›

The entrance to each block and its private garage has the look and feel not of a conventional residential complex on the Costa del Sol but instead resembles arriving at a five-star deluxe hotel, complete with beautiful materials and glass lobby entrances. The same is true of the garages themselves and the lifts up to the apartments that naturally reflect this level of sophistication in their design, space and finishing.

Sascha and Tony have extended this sense of uniqueness to the sourcing of customdesigned kitchens, bathroom finishes and furnishing solutions that are exclusive yet non-standard highend choices. “This is what we mean with even our ‘standard’ offering being far from standard,” says Tony, “and on top of this we provide a scope of personal adaptation that introduces a new level of made-tomeasure.”

MODERN, MADE TO YOUR SPECIFICATIONS In other words, buyers at Ocean View have a unique extent of control over their choice of kitchen, bathroom, materials, detailing and finishing touches, as well as a high degree of flexibility when it comes to specifications and interior distribution. “What’s more, it is not really dependent upon the stage of construction at

which you buy, as we make personalisation of your property a reality right up to the final moment.” Starting from a rich canvas of standard options, the client has the choice to take the detailing, finishing and decoration of their new property at Ocean View more or less in the direction they wish. The result is a perfectly bespoke home that is modern, newly-built and ready to move

into, as well as uniquely yours. As Tony says, “The only thing you will have in common with your neighbours is the stunning view across protected nature to the coastline only minutes away.”

SIERRA BERMEJA FIRES: WWF RESPONDS The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has demanded radical change to stop forest fires such as the recent Sierra Bermeja tragedy (which took the life of a firefighter). Climate change is accelerating and intensifying wildfires more rapidly than expected and we aren’t currently prepared to deal with their effects. The Sierra Bermeja fires forced 3,000 people from six municipalities to leave their homes or confine themselves within their dwellings. ECOEMBES SPEARHEADING THE RECYCLING MOVEMENT IN SPAIN WORDS MARISA CUTILLAS PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF ECOEMBES

I

f you are an eco-friendly family that makes full use of the plethora of yellow and blue recycling bins you see along the Costa del Sol (and indeed in the rest of Spain), then you may have wondered who makes them available, what occurs to the items you pop into these bins, and the extent to which you are benefitting the Planet. The last query can be answered immediately: You are making a big difference. Víctor Vázquez, Waste Management Specialist at Ecoembes (Andalusian office) recently enlightened me with useful data: “Approximately 80 soda pop cans can be recycled into a bicycle tyre, eight cans of conserves can be transformed into a cooking pot, and 550 aluminium cans can become an aluminium chair.” His words highlight one important fact: successful recycling starts with

you, so maintain your resolve and use the many available recycling bins. If you haven’t already started, meanwhile, what are you waiting for – another polar ice cap to start melting?

with 12,669 member companies. It works closely alongside local governments and a wide range of businesses involved in the manufacture, distribution, sale, and recycling of waste products.

WHAT IS ECOEMBES?

FINDING NEW LIFE FOR WASTED PACKAGING

Ecoembes is a not-for-profit organisation whose main remit is to coordinate the selective pick-up and recovery of light packaging (plastic, metal and carton) and paper and cardboard packaging for its subsequent recycling. Its aim is to comply with the Spanish and EU legal requirements containing obligations to reduce the environmental impact of packaging and find new uses for unwanted materials. Ecoembes was founded in 1996 and it runs an integrated management system (in accordance with Law 11/97 on Packaging and Plastic Waste)

In addition to coordinating the packaging recycling system, Víctor explains, “we also work closely with local administrations to select the waste products and residue that are brought to recycling companies to be converted into primary products that can be made into a range of useful items.” The success achieved by this entity is impressive indeed. Víctor says, “In 2020, we delivered 1,490,283 tons of domestic packaging to official recycling centres and prevented the emission of 1.67 million tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.”

ANDALUCÍA LEADING THE WAY Andalucía’s results are particularly impressive. Víctor elaborates, “Over the past five years, the use of our bins in Andalucía has increased by 27 per cent. The Costa del Sol mancomunidad (local entity) has one of the highest percentage of citizen involvement in Spain and in no small part it is owing to the eco-awareness and participation of residents from abroad.”

Ecoembes. It also indicates that it contributes financially to this system). The amount paid depends on the type of packaging used.

REVOLUTIONISING PACKAGING Víctor tells me that Ecoembes is also helping to battle climate change via prevention: “We work on the eco-design of packaging

with smaller carbon footprints. For over 20 years, we have been collaborating with packaging companies and have helped formulate over 45,000 measures that reduce the environmental impact of their products.” Ecoembes carries out studies whose results are used to propose regulatory changes and new management models. ›

WHO FINANCES ECOEMBES? Ecoembes is financed by the contributions of member companies, which pay an annual amount toward the ‘Green Dot system’ (the ‘Green Dot’ is a symbol visible on all packaging handled by Ecoembes’ integrated management system. It signifies that the company responsible for a particular packaged product complies with the Packaging Law via its membership in

EDUCATION AND CITIZEN ACTION Ecoembes is also big on education and it has many programmes that run simultaneously, each with its own goal. Naturaliza, for instance, is centred on incorporating environmental topics into the educational system. “We train

teachers and provide them with online resources so they can incorporate environmental studies into core subjects such as Science, Maths, Languages, and so forth. Some resources are in English so that bilingual centres can avail of them. We also encourage teachers to take their students out into Nature, proposing various activities and giving them the tools they need to carry them out.” Another important project is LIBERA, which encourages citizens to gather together and take part in freeing natural areas, rivers, beaches, and other spaces from rubbish. “If every person cleaned up just one metre of their local area, imagine how many millions of metres would be rubbish-free.” SEO/Birdlife, in alliance with Ecoembes, sends volunteers the equipment they need to clean – including gloves, recycled bin bags, and the like. If you are interested in these or any other programmes, check out Ecoembes’ website, which also provides information in English. i www.ecoembes.com

HOW IS MYCELIUM FORMED? Mycelium forms when mushroom spores germinate and develop filaments that form a sophisticated network of neurological membranes. Mycelium has many things in common with humans. Its membranes have stomachs, as well as lungs that inhale oxygen. Mycelium also has similar pathogens – such as bacteria. Thanks to fungi, human beings obtained their first antibiotic – penicillin. As mycelia grow, they fuse with other mycelia in the soil, forming small gaps

where water collects and microbial communities thrive. By maintaining a solid structure within the soil, they reduce erosion while keeping the earth moist and full of nutrients.

dead plant matter, since it breaks down organic matter into vital nutrients for plant growth.

PLANTS AND TREES NEED MYCELIUM TO GROW

Around 95% of the world’s THE ORIGINS OF MYCELIUM plant species form Around 1.3 billion years ago – ‘mycorrhizal relationships’ hundreds of million years prior (symbiotic associations) with to the arrival of plants – fungi fungi. As mycelium grows in left the oceans and colonised the earth, it mines minerals the land, breaking down rock such as potassium, calcium, into soil (mycelium contains copper, phosphorus, and acids that decompose rock). zinc, making them available Without mycelium, the forest to plants. Moreover, when floor would be covered in mycelium colonises the roots

MIRACULOUS MYCELIUM Mushroom foraging is a revered hobby for those who know how mysterious, colourful, and delicious the world of fungi can be. Of course, mushrooms are just the fruiting body of fungi; they are their visible, most ‘glamorous’ part. Beneath them, however, lies what for many is the most impressive part of fungi: the mycelium — a complex network of thread-like filaments that may hold the key to the Planet’s survival. WORDS MARISA CUTILLAS

of a plant or tree, it triggers the production of specific chemicals that enable plants and trees to defend themselves against threats. Mycelium fixes carbon underground, with researchers finding that up to 70 per cent of the carbon found in soil comes from the residual cell walls of its filaments. Trees and plants use this CO2 to make sugars that they feed to mycelia, so it’s definitely a win-win situation.

MYCELIUM IS SENTIENT Mycologist, Paul Stamets, has called mycelium a “sentient

membrane” because it is aware of and responsive to changes in the environment. When people, wild animals, or insects walk on the forest floor, it senses and responds to their movements, ‘jumping up’ to grab debris. Mycelium also enables trees to ‘talk’ to each other. A University of Reading study showed that Douglas fir trees recognise the root tips of their relatives and favour them when sending carbon and nutrients through the mycelial network. Stamets appropriately calls mycelium “the Earth’s natural Internet.”

MYCELIUM IS MASSIVE AND MIGHTY One single cubic inch of soil (16.3cm3) can contain over 13km of mycelial cells. The largest living organism, located in Eastern Oregon, is a 2,000-year-old mycelial mat measuring 890 hectares. Despite being only one cell wall thick, mycelium is ultra-strong. Stamets states, “In the right conditions, mycelium produces a mushroom – it bursts through with such ferocity that it can break asphalt.”

HOW CAN FUNGI SAVE THE WORLD? If you are intrigued by mycelium, watch Stamets’ 2008 TED Talk, Six Ways Mushrooms Can Save the World. The uses of mycelium include: Z CLEANING UP OIL SPILLS: An experiment by Stamets found that mycelium absorbs oil, breaking carbon-hydrogen bonds and remanufacturing it into carbohydrates. The latter attract insects, which in turn provide food for birds. As birds drop vegetation seeds, new ecosystems are born. Z ABSORBING POLLUTION ON FARMS: Stamets placed burlap sacks filled with debris and mycelium downstream from

216 / OCTOBER 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

farms to filter runoff. This filter reduced bacterial numbers 10,000 times over. Z FIGHTING DISEASE: The fungal species agarikon, which is rare in old-growth forests in the Pacific Northwest (U.S.) is highly active against pox and flu viruses. Saving old-growth forests, Stamets notes, is “a matter of national defence” as the threat of biological warfare looms ahead. Z MAKING INSECTICIDES: When ants eat sporeless mycelium, they die and mummify and a mushroom grows out of their head. As these mushrooms mature, they produce spores, which repel ants – making them an excellent natural insecticide.

Z CREATING FUEL: Mycelium converts cellulose into fungal sugars that can potentially be used to replace fossil fuels. Z SAVING THE PLANET: Anyone can make a cardboard ‘life box’ with fungal spores, soils, and water. This creates a rich environment to plant seeds like corn, onions, and beans. You can also use tree seeds to grow an old-growth forest from this box. Mycelium has various uses – it is used to make vegan building structures, create sustainable packaging, and make clothing. In many ways, it is one of nature’s most powerful allies in the battle against climate change because it absorbs large amounts of CO2 and enables plants and trees to survive. Current times are revealing that we additionally need compounds that are highly resistant to bacteria. In many ways, investing in mycelium is key to our survival. e

RIOJA BLANCO A NEW CHAPTER WORDS PHILIP HARRIS PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF BODEGAS TOBÍA AND CONDE VALDEMAR

IN THE BEGINNING Our story starts on the 6th June, 1925 when Rioja was granted its DO status. In addition to the red varieties, three white grapes were permitted: Viura, Malvasía and Garnacha blanca. The prolific Viura soon established itself as the favourite in an

218 / OCTOBER 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

era where yield tended to be more desirable than quality. Although two generations have considered Rioja to be a powerhouse for quality red wine production, this did not make itself obvious until the mid1970s. This might also explain why so many of us who

first cut our teeth on red Rioja were treated to a seemingly never-ending supply of 1970 and other mature delights. Today, although whites only represent 9% of total Rioja sales, this does not truly reflect their growth over the last decade.

IF YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU’RE DOING, LEAVE IT TO THE EXPERTS Bodegas such as López de Heredia and Marqués de Murrieta became craftsmen of Viura dominated blends, along with a judicious splodge of Malvasía to provide viscosity to pair with Viura’s crisp acidity. However, they realised that prolonged but careful barrel maturation was needed to draw out the aromas of both grapes, particularly Viura. Taste Viña Gravonia or Castillo

Ygay to appreciate the complexity achieved by these masters. Not everyone was as diligent or skilful and there were many ‘wannabees’ which failed. A vicious circle was at work: without long maturation, the aromas and flavours of neither Viura nor Malvasía would materialise, but prolonged oaking led to many flabby, oxidised wines. These provided a deterrent to further Rioja Blanco sales.

SWIMMING AGAINST STHE TIDE The arrival of INOX (stainless steel) vats produced an unexpected problem for Rioja. Bodegas like Marqués de Riscal and La Rioja Alta were not slow to recognise its advantages, but knew that other varieties were better suited to it than the authorised ones. The conservative legislators of the Consejo were much slower to acknowledge

this and react. Light, fruity, zippy, unoaked whites became universally popular and Rioja was left behind.

IF YOU CAN’T BEAT THEM, JOIN THEM Years of potential sales were lost until 2007 and a realisation from the DO that something had to change. Initially the new rules were carefully created to ensure that the new varieties, especially the non-native ones did not usurp the three permitted back in 1925. Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Verdejo, along with Maturana Blanca, Tempranillo Blanco and Turruntés (the last three deemed native) could appear in blends as long as traditional varieties made up the majority. Furthermore, native varieties could be used to make single-varietal wines, but the three interlopers could not, nor could they be listed before a native grape on a wine label. No new plantings were allowed: it was one vine out, one in. A further relaxation of the laws has now taken place, with equal status given to the non-native varietals. However it appears that many bodegas are more interested in creating better wines from either the original three or adding the native grapes to their blends. ›

EMBRACING CHANGE Few have used the new legislation with as much alacrity as Oscar Tobía. As a relative newcomer starting in 1994, much of his time has been spent challenging the authorities to allow him to experiment in ways that many would consider heretical. A three year study, ending in 2015 experimented with different woods – acacia and chestnut, alongside American oak. He has planted some of the new varietals and his Alma Tobía blend is comprised of Viura, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. The Conde Valdemar Blanco 2020 from Bodega Martínez Bujanda is produced from 60% Viura, Tempranillo Blanco, Malvasía and Sauvignon Blanc.

AND WILL THEY LIVE HAPPILY EVER AFTER? Of the ‘new arrivals’ it is Tempranillo Blanco, not the international grapes which is causing waves. Created from a natural genetic mutation found in one red Tempranillo vine, it exists nowhere else. According to Rafael Vivanco of Dinastía Vivanco, one of the three original Bodegas with holdings, it is not as aromatic as Sauvignon Blanc, but fresher than Chardonnay. It is now the second most planted white grape after Viura, albeit with a measly1.14% of Rioja’s total hectares. From 2013, Whites and Rosés have regularly generated double figure growth, even in years when consumption and sales have fallen. Has there ever been a better time to rediscover Rioja Blanco? e
