THE ART OF BOSTON LIVING COLONIAL

CHARM WITH A MODERN SOUL

The charm of Boston begins from above. Approaching Logan Airport, flying over sailing boats floating on the dark blue Atlantic, it is difficult to find a more pleasurable way to enter a city. Warm sun reflects off the water, and even if there is snow on the tarmac, there is a compelling pull to join the activity unfolding in the city below.

Distinctively Boston things run through my mind – crowds at Fenway Park, eating a Fenway Frank, cheering with Bruins fans, singing Shipping Up to Boston or anything by Noah Kahan at a bar. Even simple pastimes like holding an iced coffee in below-freezing weather and imagining yourself

in the classic film Good Will Hunting every time you pass by MIT remind me of the city.

F. Scott Fitzgerald spoke of seeing New York City for the first time again with every drive Gatsby made over the Queensboro Bridge. That is how it feels to enter Boston once more – to see the city from a flight’s window seat is always to see it anew, in its wild promise of all the history and beauty of American metropolitanism.

This sentiment accompanies me on each flight I take back to Boston. Even on quick trips from New York, only an hour away, there is a sense of relief in seeing a whole city from your plane’s window. Sometimes I even request the left-side window seat solely for the view – and I’m typically an aisle person. ›

Romanticising Boston is not an easy thing. Winters are cold and summers can be humid. In autumn it can rain for days; spring is sporadic and almost always late. Yet between all four seasons, I have learnt that there are these perfect days that make visiting Boston at any time of year worthwhile.

WHEN THE WEATHER TURNS

On a rainy day, museums like the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston Children’s Museum, and the Harvard Museum of Natural History make for the perfect itinerary. Even the Museum of Ice Cream or a tour of the Old State House

– the first US State House – can be ideal additions between delicious meals and sporadic winds. While you could choose to stroll down the red-brick Freedom Trail, it’s recommended to do so on a sunny, or at least dry, day.

The Freedom Trail has become one of my favourite aspects of living in Boston.

Starting at Boston Common, the larger park next to America’s first public park, the Public Garden, it spans four kilometres, winding between cemeteries where founding fathers lie, and ends at the USS Constitution, a famous naval ship now serving as a museum.

Beyond the vast historical

points along the trail – which is by no means a nature hike – I have come to find a good mantra in the city: if you stumble out of a bar and land on the Freedom Trail, you’ve found a good one. Favourites like the 21st Amendment and JJ Foley’s, highly rated for its Guinness annually, are Boston classics visited by locals and tourists alike.

The Green Dragon and Bell in Hand have the special flair of Founding Fathers’ portraits lining their interiors, ensuring you never tire of looking round the room. In how many bars in your city can you say you’ve had a drink with George Washington or Thomas Jefferson?

A REVOLUTIONARY SPIRIT

In 1776, Boston was at the forefront of the thirteen colonies seceding from the British Empire. With the help of European nations equally opposed to Great Britain, and with the support of countless brave souls, America took its first breath on free soil. It has been breathing ever since, through wars and turmoil, and throughout it all has grown to absorb a certain mixed culture that is incomparable to other places in the United States.

A tourist might be quick to say Boston is simply a smaller New York City. They would be wrong. And never say that aloud – unless you want a Patriots fan holding an iced Dunkin’ coffee to yell specific Boston insults at you in Southie. ›

A SEASON ON NEWBURY STREET

Boston was a daunting city to move to at first. In the midst of a blizzard in January, I began to explore the city and fortunately found comfort quickly through my favourite pastimes: shopping and menu tasting. Under holiday-lit trees in Back Bay on Newbury Street, I found my shopping habits a relief in a new city. Even better, the cafés and boutiques I grew to love in winter only became lovelier as spring arrived. Restaurants began opening their outdoor seating, and as summer rolled in, streets would close to traffic at weekends, turning into strolling paradises.

Milk and Money, Covet, Credo Beauty, even classics

like Reformation, Alice and Olivia, and a walk through Ralph Lauren are ideal spots to catch up on trends and discover unique additions to a wardrobe. Ivy fashion is at the heart of Boston design –think hydrangeas by the coast and Ina Garten’s cooking. This aesthetic is carried through Boston shopping and only enhances the experience. Designer shops start at the top of Newbury, and as you

make your way down, they become more mainstream. Stopping for a sandwich at DeLuca’s Market, tacos at Lolita Back Bay, or a lobster roll at The Banks will sustain you before exploring another Boston neighbourhood. To dine among the food critics, Contessa’s rooftop restaurant on Newbury Street offers a curated selection of ItalianAmerican brunch, lunch, and dinner.

Close by you’ll find the Boston Public Library, a museum of Boston academia in itself that exudes the higher education atmosphere of the nearby prestigious universities. To further indulge in grand architectural libraries, the Boston Athenaeum is a hidden gem. Located near the Common, and for a small donation, you can tour the grand 1807 library and museum. ›

BEACON HILL AND BEYOND

Working upwards from the Common, Acorn Street welcomes you to the beautiful and picturesque Beacon Hill neighbourhood. If you ever aspired to reach a Martha Stewart level of hostess and style perfection, Beacon Hill is where you begin. Speciality food shops start here and continue until you reach the North End, while speciality designer shops and homeware line the streets. Hidden gems await up every side street, and

especially during autumnal leaf-changing, the area is a perfect example of Federalist and colonial architecture.

Boston is not a European city, by any means. However, I would go so far as to say it is the most European of American big

cities. Without Washington DC’s grand promenades or New York’s skyscrapers, Boston has retained its revolutionary charm in old brick buildings and neighbourhood distinction difficult to find in other metropolitan areas.

A frozen Charles River seen from Cambridge
Rowing team on the Charles River by Riverbend Park near Harvard Square

THE NORTH END

The winding streets of the North End could make you feel as if you were lost in any southern Italian village – and the classic Neapolitan pizza at Bricco or seafood at Mare Oyster Bar and Neptune Oyster will exemplify that Mediterranean breeze you thought just wafted past you. To bring you back to American soil, Neptune’s lobster roll and Mamma Maria’s house-made pastas will do the trick.

Not to compete with any monumental European

cathedrals, but Boston holds its own with historic churches. Mass Irish and Italian immigration brought with it good food and a knack for building churches. Within the streets of the North End, you can spot the Old North Church, the oldest church building in Boston, built in 1723. In the Theatre District Downtown, there is Park Street Church, another wonder near the five-star Omni Parker House Hotel. For any book lovers, the Brattle Book Shop is just round the corner and well worth a visit. ›

The Old State House was built in 1713. The Declaration of Independence was read for the first time in Boston from its balcony in July 1776

A CITY OF NEIGHBOURHOODS

Italian food in the North End, day drinking in Southie, a high-end dinner in historic Downtown followed by drinks and jazz in the South End – Boston has it all. Dining at either Michelinstarred restaurant No. 9 or O Ya, followed by music at Beehive, ensures a perfect evening.

Back Bay for shopping, Brookline for off-the-grid foodies, Cambridge for festivals and academia, Somerville for residential charm and hidden bars – the city never ends. Whether above or below the Charles River, Boston is walkable, transport options are abundant (you can even take the ferry to the lavish Encore casino), and exploring never grows tiresome, no matter the weather.

Activities such as touring Fenway Park and Harvard University, walking through the Christian Science Plaza, and watching re-enactments of the Boston Tea Party will keep even a local busy. After strolling beneath the oaks and maple trees shading the quads of Harvard, reserve a table at one of the numerous Michelin-starred restaurants in the area. Pagu in Central Square, Giulia in Porter Square, and Pammy’s, just a few blocks away from campus, are extraordinary restaurants, all in the Cambridge area.

EVENING ESCAPES

After a great meal in Boston, when the evening chill comes in, my favourite thing to do is find a new cocktail bar in which to seek shelter for an hour or two before braving any outdoor storm. One of my first discoveries was local favourite

speakeasy the Wig Shop.

Like many others, I believed I was walking into a barber’s or perhaps a costume shop, but the red hanging curtains and delicious cocktails before me told another story. Extra Dirty Cocktail Club is a close second with their cocktailtasting menu style of service, while OFFSUIT, Sushi @ Temple Records, and D16 are all excellent cocktail bars themselves.

Beyond delicious cocktail tasting, after a pasta dinner you would find me at the bar underneath Modern Pastry. And yes, you can bring your cannoli to eat alongside a martini downstairs. There is a longstanding rivalry between Mike’s Pastry and Modern Pastry – try both after getting a slice at Regina’s Pizzeria round the corner – but it is my personal opinion that Modern is simply delightful.

THE NEW SEAPORT

Before returning to your hotel in the central hub of Boston – whether it be the Four Seasons in Beacon Hill, Raffles in Back Bay, The Langham in the Financial District, or the Newbury Boston – cross the Fort Point Channel to Seaport.

While Seaport may not be the newest of Boston’s neighbourhoods, it is by no means lagging behind the others. Skyscrapers block the winds, and at times it feels like a city within itself, surrounded by glass and modernity. Hotels like the Envoy by

the Autograph Collection are excellent examples of what contemporary Boston represents. Nearby Greek restaurant Committee and glamorous Grace by Nia, which always features live music, are reasons in themselves to visit this side of the city. ›

Boston Harbour at Longwharf

NEW ENGLAND AWAITS

Beyond the wonders of Greater Boston, Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, the Green Mountains of Vermont, and Maine’s coastline all lie a short flight or drive away. There is no shortage of day trips or weekend getaways that will open your eyes to the beauty and charm of New England. Luxury Airbnbs,

five-star hotels, seafood overlooking the very water where it was caught, and an American Ivy flair throughout it all – it is highly recommended to extend your stay beyond the city. Boston changed my opinion on what life can look like in an American city. I grew up in a suburban metropolis where downtown was reserved for dinner

or a hotel conference. Boston is unique in that it offers a combination of concentrated city life with residential charm, and you can choose your own path. Believe me or not, but visit Boston yourself to prove me wrong – this slice of European charm, with perhaps a few more blizzards, is a perfect trip to take. e

LEADING THE HOTEL IPV PALACE & SPA INTO A DYNAMIC NEW ERA

WORDS MARISA CUTILLAS PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF THE HOTEL IPV PALACE & SPA

Throughout the approximately 25 years I’ve been living on the Coast, one hotel has always captured my attention, owing to its striking architecture and inimitable location, right on the Fuengirola beachfront, overlooking the stunning Sohail Castle. Driving from Marbella, just as the A-7 gently curves into Fuengirola, the IPV stands proud, soothing one’s gaze with its light, earthy hue and stately appearance. This four-star hotel has 285 rooms, most of which offer sea views. Having visited the hotel recently, I can attest to its enviable proximity to the beach and to the warm, professional ambience, where the staff is highly attentive to guests’ needs.

Around three years ago, the IPV’s CEO, Nacho Pérez Valero, took the reins of the hotel from his father, Ignacio Pérez Rodríguez, a promoter who launched the

IPV Palace & Spa brand in 2011. At that time, Nacho was just 15, but his father saw his potential as a leader. Nacho’s family owned a hotel group, and he grew up around hotels, but he also had an entrepreneurial fire burning within him. In his late teens

and early 20s, while his father was at the helm of the IPV, Nacho immersed himself in event organisation, honing his planning and execution skills. He also worked in PR, dealing with diverse groups and managing dynamic teams. He additionally founded a men’s

fashion brand, BVMPERS, which sharpened his creativity and business savvy.

His entrepreneurial experiences taught him to love challenges and aim for continuous improvement. And that’s a good thing, considering he was only in his mid-20s when he took control of the IPV owing to unforeseen circumstances. It was earlier than he had expected, but he faced his new mission with aplomb. “When I took over, I had two choices: I could either leave things as they were – since business was doing well – or think about how

to move the hotel forward. I chose the latter approach, since any business that doesn’t evolve is doomed to failure.”

His first step was to immerse himself fully in the business to understand its inner workings. “In my first year, I was actively involved in all departments and discussions. I was ready to question whether we were doing things the best way possible.” The result was a business plan based on five pillars. The first involved creating a new staff structure and professionalising the team, ensuring that everyone had optimal opportunities for training and development. The second was digitalisation –improving hotel management through technology and providing a more personalised guest experience. The IPV implemented various software solutions that took it to a far more sophisticated level, centred on management, marketing, and customer service.

The set of tools selected by Nacho and his team includes Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and Property Management System (PMS) software, as well as resource planning tools. The result is a robust system that can adapt to additional software solutions and other business models. For instance, one of Nacho’s plans for the future is to expand into real estate. The IPV’s current digital infrastructure can easily be leveraged to support Nacho’s growth in this new direction. He says, “In the past, the hotel didn’t have a virtual check-in service. Thanks to our new PMS software, it does,” adding, “We will be embarking on our second digitalisation phase in 2026, focusing our efforts on going 100 per cent digital.” ›

The third pillar was the establishment of a corporate culture built on hiring a diverse, highly experienced, and talented team of professionals. “I want to be surrounded by people who have more specialised knowledge and experience than I do. Our corporate culture is characterised by continuous communication. We solve problems together, and everyone knows the goals, roles, and procedures. I

prioritised the creation of new departments and the hiring of key professionals.”

The fourth pillar of Nacho’s vision is that of renovation. “In 20 years, the IPV had never been renovated. We have spent around half a million euros each year on improvements, making for a total of €1.5 million so far, and we will be renovating the hotel more extensively in 2026.”

The fifth pillar is centred on marketing – in

particular, rebranding the hotel (formerly known as the Beatriz Palace) and raising awareness of all it has to offer, particularly in Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE). “We have ample MICE spaces with sea views and natural light, and we have invested in the establishment of a WiFi network, as well as in new fixtures, furniture, and even crockery, to add a touch of prestige to events and celebrations.” ›

Nacho highlights the IPV’s gastronomic efforts, including the Italian restaurant La Credenza, whose branding and menu the team is

currently developing. Another restaurant, La Taurina Bar, is a traditional Spanish establishment, where guests can enjoy classic Spanish tapas. Guests and visitors can also dine at the Beach Club in the summer, or tuck into a buffet all year round at the Doña Lola restaurant.

Not to be forgotten is the spa, with its updated facilities. Its hydrothermal circuit includes a dynamic pool equipped with various underwater massages, a swan neck, a waterfall, and a Jacuzzi; an ice fountain, and an exclusive dry area with a sauna and a hammam. There is an impressive menu of facial and body treatments, including massages,

ocean rituals, and hightech treatments such as pressotherapy, the LED light therapy facial mask, facial radiofrequency treatment, and body-slimming ultrasound cavitation.

Nacho Pérez Valero represents the zeitgeist of modern leadership. His creativity, innovation, and drive mean the businesses he runs will never get stuck in their ways. For the young CEO, an excellent company is based on a great team, top technology, and an openness to new ideas. We foresee a bright future for him, his team, and the IPV Palace Hotel & Spa.

NATURE SPOTS IN ANDALUCÍA

Cazorla:

Summer is an annual highlight but in these parts it can be long, hot and leave you in need of a little gentle recharging. Fortunately, Andalucía is rich in spots that are made just for this.

The arrival of autumn is a welcome respite from several months of the glorious yet long and hot summer season. Our leafy time of year remains the envy of many, as benevolently warm and sunny as the summers of those in northern climes, yet it occasionally alternates with short spells of rain and moody days, the first signs of a winter that is still some months away. This sets the tone for an escape into the hinterland and the rugged coastlines of Andalucía, a region that offers not only the most iconic summers in Europe but also a treasure trove of year-round experiences and peaceful beauty spots just made for recharging your

batteries.

Just as one season sets the focus on sunny beaches so another avoids convergence and the associated crowds of people. Autumn brings with it the need for a bit of solitude, peace, and being surrounded by the regenerative energy of nature. If this is indeed what you seek, Andalucía offers a world of options, from quaint stopovers in old monasteries to glamping and country hotels, but here we’ve selected some of the most popular getaway destinations that come into their own when the temperatures begin to drop a little – inviting you to explore stunning scenery that you may not have associated with southern Spain.

SIERRA DE CAZORLA

Situated in the northeastern part of Andalucía, a little beyond Granada within the province of Jaén, the Sierra de Cazorla is a mountain range that forms part of the greater Parque Natural de las Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas, which covers a combined area of almost 215,000 hectares, or almost the size of Luxembourg. Within this expanse of valleys, rocky peaks, and wooded hills you will find traditional Andalusian farmland and villages but also mountainous sections that are more reminiscent of the Canadian Rockies than Spain.

Sierra de Cazorla forms part of one of the largest natural parks in Spain

It is the largest protected park in Spain and the second largest in Europe, dotted with charming country hotels and mountain resorts that offer spa treatments, fine dining interpretations of rustic fare, and spectacular views of the wooded mountains.

Cazorla is a haven for hikers, with routes taking you through forests, rocky crags, green valleys, and past river gorges, beautiful waterfalls, water caves, and panoramic vantage points that offer views across kilometres of terrain. If you’re lucky,

you’ll also be able to spot mountain ibex, deer, vultures, various types of eagles, and wild boar.

The Sierra de Cazorla is a natural paradise unknown to many on the Costa del Sol, and one of the largest sections of open nature in the country. ›

The picturesque village of Cazorla at the heart of natural beauty

CABO DE GATA

Venture a Little further southeast, past the city of Almería, and as you skirt the shoreline you come to a coast with otherworldly scenery. Its rugged darktoned cliffs seem to pierce the waters of the Mediterranean that also wash sandy coves and beaches. This is not one of Spain’s ‘Costas’ but a truly wild shoreline where you can roam freely either under sunny skies or stormy

conditions. Not far away is an extension of resort hotels and beaches that form part of one of the largest nudist areas in Europe, but sticking to the western side you’ll find yourself in a ‘movie set’ scenery of dry, rocky coastline dotted with tiny fishing villages.

The Cabo de Gata is a favourite of movie producers and if you make it there, you’ll know why. This is a region whose coast is so dramatic and rugged that it makes an immediate impact. The villages are small and basic but more welcoming than they look, some featuring authentic little bars and fish restaurants that serve unadulterated simple but deliciously fresh seafood. Popular with campers, surfers, and nature lovers, you’ll struggle to find a wilder, more natural coast, and if open air and raw authenticity is your thing, the Cabo de Gata is just what the doctor ordered.

Playa Monsul in the dramatic coastline of Cabo de Gata

GRAZALEMA

Closer to home, little more than an hour from Marbella, is the Grazalema, officially and quite surprisingly the wettest village in Spain. This also makes the surroundings beautifully lush and green, yet don’t expect this pretty white mountain village to be eternally shrouded in rain as it somehow manages to stay quite sunny and appealing. Appealing indeed to lovers of nature who enjoy camping, hiking, and swimming in the natural rock pools nearby, as this is one of the most beautiful parts of the large Serranía de Ronda mountain range.

The village itself is also a delight, offering classic white village charm combined with tapas bars and restaurants that offer hearty country dishes in a cosy ambience. In winter you’ll smell the welcoming scent of wood burning in fireplaces and get that warm Christmas feeling, while at other times of the year the hostels and country hotels welcome visitors drawn by the charm of the village and its surroundings, bringing in a mix of food, culture, and nature lovers to a beauty spot that offers everything from mountain biking, mountaineering and hiking to kayaking on the nearby lake of Zahara de la Sierra. ›

EL ROMPIDO

Should you still be drawn by seascapes, sandy beaches, and breezes coming off the sea (in this case the Atlantic Ocean) but long for peace and tranquillity in a beautiful setting, then El Rompido is the battery that will recharge you. Located on the way to the Portuguese border, this pretty little fishing village is also a coastal resort with a very natural feel and beautiful setting where the Río Piedra empties into a shallow lagoon before reaching the ocean.

The village and stylish lowrise resorts set between pine trees stand on the inland part

of the lagoon, facing a land bar whose sand dunes offer idyllic spots for sunbathing with lots of private space and surrounded by nature.

The village itself is small and quaint, with fishing boats bobbing in the water. At low tide you can wander onto the sandy lagoon and see

hundreds of little crabs rush away into holes as the water recedes. The combination of spa hotels, gorgeous scenery, fresh seafood, and a scenic golf course will do much to renew your energy and leave you not just fit to return to everyday life but also wanting to come back for more. ›

Jabugo

ARACENA

If you’re heading past Seville and long for cool, leafy surroundings after a long hot summer, then maybe follow a northerly direction, past the ruins of the Roman town of Italica and towards the region of Extremadura. Soon enough signs for the town of Aracena will appear, urging you to head westwards towards Portugal. Before you reach the border, you’ll find yourself in a beautiful, forested area where huge ancient trees offer cooling shade and the Iberian pigs that this region of Jabugo is famous for rummage between olive and cork groves.

Aracena, the main town in this area, is a classic, charming country town set among hills and green pastures. It is large enough to have an impressive historic quarter and a great choice of restaurants, with good hostels, hotels, and even a Parador set in a former convent. The surroundings are equally enticing, offering a range of options that include walks through the countryside, fine dining in country restaurants and hotels, visits to Jabugo farms and wineries, as well as more active sports in the nearby sierras. There are also holistic and star-gazing retreats, rounding this destination off as one of the classic spots in which to escape the summer heat, relax, be active, and return from nicely revived. e

GRIT, GLAMOUR, AND GLORY

MARBELLA – HOST OF 2025

IRONMAN 70.3 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

The 2025 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Marbella promises to be a landmark event, showcasing the city’s rich cultural heritage and its growing prominence in the world of international sports. Whether you’re an athlete aiming for glory or a spectator wanting to soak up the atmosphere, Marbella offers an unparalleled setting for this extraordinary display of prowess.

Coastal grit meets Mediterranean glamour this autumn as Marbella, the jewel of Spain’s Costa del Sol, prepares to host one of the most prestigious sporting events on the planet: the 2025 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship. On the weekend of November 8 and 9, the city is expected to welcome approximately 7,000 athletes from more than 100 countries, each ready to test themselves against the elements in a gruelling challenge of endurance, determination, and resilience. It will be the first time the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship has been staged in Spain, adding to Marbella’s growing reputation as a magnet for global sporting occasions. Since the inaugural IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in 2006 in Clearwater, Florida, the event has evolved into a

cornerstone of competitive triathlon. Prestigious cities such as Zell am SeeKaprun in Austria, Nice in France, and Lahti in Finland have hosted the championship, each offering a unique blend of athletic challenge and scenic beauty. Marbella now joins this elite roster, bringing its Mediterranean charm, glamour, and challenging course to a worldwide audience.

The event itself will be split into a twoday format with women racing on the first day and men on the second day. Returning high profile athletes include Casper Stornes (NOR) – this year’s IRONMAN World Champion; Jelle Geens (BEL) – 2024 IRONMAN 70.3 World Champion, as well as Olympic athletes: Kristian Blummenfelt (NOR), Vincent Luis (FRA), Pierre Le Corre (FRA), Jamie Riddle (ZAF), and Jess Learmonth (GBR). ›

The significance of hosting the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship extends far beyond the competitive arena. The Andalusian regional government projects an economic impact of approximately €60 million, with around 126,000 overnight stays expected as athletes, families, and spectators fill hotels, restaurants, luxury boutiques, galleries, and wellness destinations.

Patricia del Pozo, Minister of Culture and Sport for

Andalucía, highlighted the city’s long-standing commitment to hosting major sporting events, noting that Marbella has previously organised Davis Cup qualifiers, World Padel Tour tournaments, and the International Rhythmic Gymnastics Grand Prix.

Del Pozo emphasised the scale and significance of the upcoming event, saying, “Up to 7,000 athletes from all over the world are expected to participate in the championship, 60% of

whom come from the United States, many accompanied, which, with an average stay of six days, gives us an approximate figure of 21,000 attendees.”

She added, “Marbella, in addition to being a municipality with a strong relationship with tourism, is a city committed to sport, having organised major sporting events and is already familiar with hosting events under the IRONMAN brand, assuring its success.”

Marbella has hosted IRONMAN 70.3 events before – five times since 2018, including the European IRONMAN 70.3 TriClub Championship in 2023 and the 2024 IRONMAN 70.3 Marbella, which attracted over 2,000 athletes globally. But this World Championship elevates the stakes: global media coverage, celebrity athletes, VIP hospitality, and the kind of exposure Marbella thrives on.

“We chose Marbella because it has everything that is required – logistics, plenty of accommodation, excellent airport connections, many good road links, as well as a sea and beaches that

are perfect for our sport. The roads also meet the needs for practising Ironman. On top of that, the weather, the warmth of Marbella’s citizens, and the great collaboration with the institutions make it an ideal choice,” said Agustí Pérez Capdevila, Senior Regional Director, IRONMAN Southern Europe.

The championship course is as rigorous as it is scenic, providing both a test of athletic endurance and a showcase of Marbella’s stunning landscapes. The triathlon opens with a 1.9 km swim in the Mediterranean Sea, starting and finishing at Levante Beach in Puerto Banús. Competitors then transition to a 90 km bike

The combination of sporting intensity, celebrity participation, and luxury VIP experiences ensures that the 2025 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Marbella

will be remembered as more than just a race. It will be a landmark celebration of human endurance, Mediterranean elegance, and cultural immersion. As competitors dive into the waters of Levante Beach, ascend the hills of Ojén, and cross the finish line along the Golden Mile, they will experience the city in all its vibrant, luxurious glory.

Spectators, VIP guests, and local residents alike will bear witness to an event where athletic prowess and lifestyle sophistication converge in a setting that is as challenging as it is breathtaking.

COURSE DETAILS

» SWIM:  The ROKA swim course is a 1.9 km (1.2 miles) single lap in the Mediterranean Sea, starting and finishing at Levante Beach in Puerto Banús.

» BIKE:  The ZOOT bike ride is a 90 km (56 miles) single loop with a net elevation gain of 1,785 metres. The route quickly leaves the Puerto Banús beach area and travels along

the famed Golden Mile palmlined avenue that parallels the sea. As soon as the route turns inland on the A-355, athletes begin a tough climb up through the village of Ojén, eventually cresting out at the high point of the course. The route then descends heading further inland past the scenic geography of the towns of Monda and Coín. At the turnaround, athletes retrace

their elevation loss to the high point again before descending back to the beautiful marina community of Puerto Banús where T2 awaits their arrival.

The number of international students has more than tripled since 2000, with many from across the globe seeking to sharpen their knowledge and stand out from the crowd. Just a few factors driving the search for greener educational pastures include globalisation, career competitiveness, and cultural immersion. Of course, those who have studied abroad typically credit their time away from home with honing a wide array of personal skills, including time management, problem-solving, and conflict resolution. Being in a new country challenges and rewards students in equal measure, demonstrating a resilience and ability to make new connections that many never knew they had. The benefits clearly outweigh the disadvantages. Currently, there are around seven million international students in many of the world’s top universities.

In this article, we will delve into key statistics, costs, and benefits of studying abroad. Note that if you are interested in specific countries or universities, it is essential to contact them directly, as fees, scholarships, and accommodation options vary widely from one university to the next, even within the same country. Moreover, costs and regulations may change from year to year.

KEY FINDINGS ON THE BENEFITS OF INTERNATIONAL STUDY

Statistics indicate that studying abroad offers measurable economic benefits. A report on the Spanish national evaluation of the Erasmus+ programme, which provides opportunities to students and teachers to learn abroad, showed that 74.3% of higher education students said that participation improved their CV. A similar percentage said it helped orient their job search, while close to 72% said they obtained

job opportunities thanks to their time abroad. Most importantly, their unemployment rate was 8.5 percentage points lower than the average for their age group. One UK study found that mobile graduates (those who spent some time studying abroad) had a significantly lower unemployment rate and higher salaries than nonmobile students. Research from the US, meanwhile, indicates that almost twice as many study abroad students find employment within 12 months of graduation. ›

DREAM BIG, STUDY FAR

WHY MORE STUDENTS ARE OPTING FOR STUDY ABROAD

TOP DESTINATIONS AND WHAT THEY COST

Some of the most popular destinations for studyabroad students are the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, France, the US, Canada, and Australia. Costs vary greatly for international students, with countries like the Netherlands and Germany having a reputation for offering excellent education at lower costs. For instance, international students wishing to study in the UK can expect to pay undergraduate fees of between £15,000 and £30,000, or more, per year, depending on the subjects

they study. As a whole, arts-based degrees tend to cost less than STEMbased degrees, as well as degrees in medicine and law. Monthly expenses range from approximately £900 to £1,400, depending on location. London, as you may imagine, is the most expensive, at about £1,300 to £1,400 per month.

In the Netherlands, EU/EEA students pay approximately €2.530 per year, while non-EU student fees vary depending on the institution and subject, ranging from around €6,000 to €20.000 annually. The monthly cost of living ranges

from around €1.000 to €1.500 a month. In Germany, in most public universities, both EU and non-EU students pay no tuition fees at the undergraduate level. There are a few exceptions; for instance, some states (such as Baden-Württemberg) charge €1.500 per semester for non–EU students. The cost of living in Germany ranges from around €850 to €1.200 a month. France also charges relatively low tuition fees. One of the best things about the Netherlands and Germany is that they offer an impressive array of Englishtaught undergraduate and

London is a dream destination for many international students

postgraduate courses, making them very accessible for non-Dutch or non-German speakers.

Studying in the United States and Canada comes at a steep price. Tuition for international students often ranges from $30,000 to $50,000 for many undergraduate programmes, with higher fees at top-rated universities and for courses like medicine. Depending on your chosen area, living costs can be high, ranging from $15,000 to over $25,000 per year. Canada has slightly lower fees for international students in many undergraduate programmes, though fees are higher for postgraduate degrees. Living costs can also be a little lower than in the US. During our research, we found that many university and college websites provide beneficial information about the cost of living. These sites break down expenses into

categories such as food, transport, and rent. Australia is a breakout destination, one for the adventurers and lovers of nature. Education in Australia is, of course, topnotch, with universities like UNSW in Sydney and the University of Melbourne rivalling top universities like Oxford and Cambridge by ranking among the Top 10 for numerous degrees. Monash University in Melbourne, for instance, holds joint fourth place globally, with 50 subjects ranked within the world’s top 200. Australia’s highest-ranked individual subjects belong to my alma mater, The University of Queensland, as well as UNSW Sydney, which are ranked second-place globally in Sports-related Subjects and Mineral & Mining Engineering, respectively. Australia is relatively affordable for domestic students, but international undergrad students have to cough up between AUD $20,000 and $ 45,000 for subjects like arts and business. For medicine and engineering, amounts can increase to around AUD $50,000 to $60,000 or more. ›

SPANISH SCHOLARSHIPS AND FINANCIAL AID

Students wishing to study abroad without excessively impacting their finances should research the scholarships and grants available to them. The Erasmus+ programme covers student exchanges within Europe, offering Spanish students the chance to complete part or all of their degrees on an exchange semester or year abroad. In Spain, MAEC-AECID (the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and

Cooperation and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation) offer grants for postgraduate studies and cultural exchanges for Spanish and international students, particularly those from Latin America, Africa, and Asia. The La Caixa Foundation also offers international mobility scholarships, which are usually merit-based.

INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS

If a specific country enamours you, it pays to

spend time researching the different opportunities it offers. Some of the most renowned scholarships include Fulbright, which offers Spanish citizens the chance to study in the U.S. Grants are awarded for Master’s degrees and PhDs. This scholarship is ultra-competitive and requires an impressive academic record. Chevening in the UK offers fully funded scholarships for one-year Master’s programmes. The DAAD in Germany offers a range of scholarships for postgraduate studies. ›

The French government offers the Eiffel Excellence Scholarship in France for Master’s and PhD degrees. A good place to start is the international student finance pages of the websites of your chosen universities. Note, too, that many deadlines are between eight and 12 months ahead of the start date, so it pays to do your research way in advance. You will also need to provide a host of documents, including academic transcripts, proof of language proficiency, letters of recommendation, statements of purpose, and, in some cases, project proposals.

FINDING THE RIGHT ACCOMMODATION

Accommodation-hunting can be a bit of a hassle for parents and young students, above all when they aren’t familiar with the area their chosen universities are located in. Our research has revealed that the offerings of different countries vary considerably. For instance, when researching the Netherlands, we found that some universities (such as Erasmus University Rotterdam and the University of Amsterdam) collaborate with external providers (including SSH, DUWO, XIOR, and Room Plaza) to offer accommodation (including shared flats and rented rooms) to

international students. These are sometimes short-term contracts for one academic year and are allocated via a lottery system or through direct application to universities. The number of reserved spots is small. For instance, only 25 per cent of Erasmus University’s international intake accede to these contracts. As found on Reddit and other forums, many students are using online platforms like ROOM.nl to find studios or apartments in their chosen cities.

In the antipodes, meanwhile, universities in cities like Melbourne and Sydney have polished websites with recommendations for specific accommodations. Universities collaborate closely with purpose-built student accommodation providers to allocate guaranteed or priority rooms for new or international students. Some providers, such as Scape and Iglu, have 24/7 reception service, which is reassuring for students arriving in the country from afar. In case you’re wondering how popular Australia is, you may be surprised. It is one of

the world’s most in-demand destinations for international students, consistently ranking among the top three globally. In 2025, it hosted nearly 800,000 international students, the highest on record for the country, indicating strong ongoing demand. The numbers explain why accommodation hunting seems to be such a smooth, polished process.

When reading about international study, I always remember being 14 and begging my parents to send me to Paris. At the time, my dream was to become a chef, to whip up elegant creations and earn a string of Michelin stars. As luck would have it, I ended up studying far more traditional courses in my hometown of Brisbane, Australia. My uni years were some of the best in

my life, and I wouldn’t take them back. Still, I always wondered what would have happened if I’d headed to Paris to discover the cradle of fine cuisine while broadening my horizons in the city of my dreams. The year I graduated, I headed to Spain, far away from my family and intending to improve my Spanish. It is never too late to leave what is familiar for a new adventure, but somehow, university life is particularly conducive to meeting new people and discovering different ways of viewing and experiencing the world. So if you’re a student with dreams of finding yourself in a new country, be courageous, do your research, and don’t be afraid to chase knowledge across continents. e

POLESTAR 5

When Polestar first unveiled its futuristic Precept concept, enthusiasts were left wondering if the Scandinavian marque could translate such a bold design and sustainability ethos into a production car. With the new Polestar 5, the answer is a resounding yes. Scheduled to arrive in Europe before the end of this year, the 5 is Polestar’s clearest statement yet – a sleek, electric grand tourer that aims to steal glances from Porsche, Tesla, and Lucid owners alike. It’s part sculpture, part science experiment, and unmistakably Scandinavian in its restraint.

WORDS SAM HEXTER PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF POLESTAR

At first sight, the Polestar 5 commands quiet respect. Its form isn’t loud or overdrawn. It’s measured and calm, the kind of beauty that reveals itself slowly. The proportions are pure GT: long bonnet, a cab pushed slightly rearward, and a roofline that slips elegantly into the tail. The front fascia avoids the aggression seen on so many performance EVs. Instead, the Polestar’s 'SmartZone' replaces the traditional grille, housing cameras and sensors behind a smooth surface, flanked by razor-sharp 'Thor’s Hammer' LED light signatures.

From profile, the 5’s bodywork appears taut, with

subtle muscle around the arches. The roof is almost entirely glass, stretching from the windscreen to the rear pillars, giving the car a sculptured uninterrupted form. Polestar has opted for a camera-based digital rearview system over traditional glass, which allowed designers to sharpen the rear and create an unbroken flow from nose to tail. Every surface feels intentional.

Open the door and you’re greeted not with ostentatious luxury, but with a sense of curated calm. Polestar’s Scandinavian roots are clear here; this is minimalism done right. The dashboard is low and linear, designed to maximise outward visibility and light. Sustainable

materials dominate, with woven flax composites, 3D-knitted textiles from recycled bottles, and softtouch surfaces made from renewable sources. The effect isn’t Spartan; it’s architectural, with every line and texture serving a purpose. ›

The layout follows a '4+1' configuration. While the Polestar 5 can technically seat five, it’s designed as a four-seater GT, with two sculpted rear chairs offering genuine comfort on long journeys. The front seats are deeply bolstered, trimmed in vegan-friendly materials or sustainably sourced leather, and both front and rear passengers can enjoy four-zone climate control and, optionally, massage functions for those long cross-country runs.

Ahead of the driver sits a clean digital cockpit, boasting a 9.5inch head-up display paired with a 14.5-inch portrait infotainment screen running Google’s

Android Automotive OS. The infotainment system is complemented by a Bowers & Wilkins audio setup that turns the cabin into a sound studio, tuned for depth rather than volume. Practicality hasn’t been forgotten either –there’s a generous 365-litre boot and an additional 62-litre frunk in the nose. The Polestar 5 is more than a design statement; it’s a technical showcase. Beneath the skin lies a bonded aluminum chassis, an engineering choice usually reserved for supercars. By bonding rather than welding the frame, Polestar has achieved a structure that’s both light and immensely rigid, delivering sharper handling and better efficiency. Power comes from a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup. In its standard configuration, it produces around 738 bhp and 813 Nm of torque, while the 'Performance' version, if that didn’t sound potent enough, elevates that figure to a staggering 870-plus horsepower and roughly 900 Nm. The result is devastatingly quick. 0–100 km/h in roughly 3.2 seconds, before pressing on to a limited top speed of 250 km/h. Despite a kerb weight north of 2.4 tonnes, the 5 hides its mass beautifully thanks to sophisticated adaptive dampers and a wellbalanced chassis.

Energy comes from a 112kWh battery pack offering up to 670 kms of range –seriously impressive for a performance-focused GT. Perhaps more exciting is Polestar’s claim of ‘extreme fast charging’, which has already demonstrated the capacity to replenish the 5’s battery from 10 to 80 percent in just 10 minutes on compatible hardware.

That’s almost science fiction!

As with every Polestar, technology takes a quiet but commanding role. The 5 brims with sensors –eleven external cameras, radar, ultrasonic systems, and interior monitoring –all managed by NVIDIA computing power for advanced driver assistance and semi-autonomous features. The car constantly refines itself via over-theair updates, meaning your Polestar 5 won’t be the same as it was six

VISITESSENTIALMAGA

months prior. They claim it will constantly be getting smarter, smoother, and subtly better. In this price and performance bracket, Polestar is wading into fiercely contested territory. The obvious rival is the Tesla Model S Plaid, whose numbers remain extraordinary, but design feels dated by comparison. Porsche’s Taycan Turbo and Audi’s RS e-tron GT also sit in the crosshairs, both highly capable but offering less range. Then there’s the Lucid Air Grand Touring, a car with similar long-legged ambitions and an equally high price tag. Mercedes’ EQS and BMW’s i7 aim for serenity and tech-laden luxury, but neither delivers the same sense of emotive design that the Polestar 5 exudes. ›

What sets the 5 apart is its balance. It isn’t obsessed with lap times, nor does it drown you in gimmicks. It’s about the journey – a true grand tourer in the electric age, blending performance, craftsmanship, and conscience in equal measure.

Official pricing hasn’t yet been confirmed, but current European indicators suggest a starting figure of around €120.000, depending on trim and specification. That places it neatly alongside the Taycan

4S and well below the most extreme Lucid or AMG EQS variants. The Polestar 5 won’t be cheap, but it isn’t meant to be.

Instead, it’s designed to stand as Polestar’s halo – a grand statement of what electric mobility can look and feel like when Scandinavian design principles meet cuttingedge engineering. For those who appreciate form as much as function, the Polestar 5 might just be the most desirable electric GT of its generation. e

THE MAKING OF A HOLLYWOOD LEADING MAN

GLEN POWELL

WORDS MARISA CUTILLAS

This month’s hottest film release, The Running Man (premiering on November 7), gives us two causes to celebrate. The film is based on the book penned by the GOAT himself, Stephen King, and it stars Glen Powell, an actor many critics have hailed as ‘the next Tom Cruise’. Powell has got it all – chiselled good looks, a flair for comedy, and the raw appeal of an action hero. I sometimes refer to him as the Aubrey Plaza of male actors. He’s impossible to ignore, charismatic, and likeable from the get-go, and someone you just can’t take your eyes off. What’s more, he’s a chameleon, able to move from comedy to romance and action effortlessly. He has that likeable ‘Everyman’ air, while being ruggedly handsome and charming. That’s what star material looks like.

Th e Running Man is a new adaptation of King’s 1987 bestseller of the same name, differing significantly from the original (1987) film, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Set in a futuristic society obsessed

with violent entertainment, it centres on a deadly televised game show called The Running Man, in which contestants (‘runners’) must survive for 30 days while being hunted by professional assassins. Every day survived increases the cash prize, with a grand prize of $1 billion going to anyone who lasts

the full term. Powell plays Ben Richards, a workingclass father desperate to obtain help for his sick daughter. Convinced by the manipulative show producer, Dan Killian (Josh Brolin), to join the show, Ben quickly becomes a fan favourite and eventually threatens the system itself. ›

The film’s director, Edgar Wright, chose Powell precisely because the actor had never appeared in a role quite like this. Powell had shown he had leading man appeal in films like Top Gun: Maverick (2022) and Hit Man (2024), but what really captured Wright was Powell’s acting prowess –his intensity, complexity, and ability to hold audiences in an emotional grip. Ben’s struggle, he noted, had to be believable, and his frustration with the oppressive

system that ruled the game had to emanate from every pore. Wright was also impressed by Powell’s interest in performing his own stunts. Like Tom Cruise, he isn’t averse to filming challenging scenes. For instance, The Running Man saw him shoot a near-nude scene in freezing weather. Powell was born and raised in Texas, where he showed an interest in movies from a young age. Film was an important pastime in his household, and young Glen and his father spent many hours watching and

analysing films. His training began in the Austin Musical Theatre programme. It continued at the University of Texas, where he majored in radio, television, and film, eventually participating in the school’s Los Angewles programme to gain on-set experience. His first film role came when he was 13, in Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over (2003). He played ‘Long-Fingered Boy’,

a role which he says sparked his love for film acting. He recalls the role with affection: “I will never forget that moment. I was 13. I shot my part, and then I hung out behind the camera. The entire crew had the most interesting jobs on the planet. You had endless friends on set. And Spy Kids 3-D was arguably our Dune.” ›

Over the next decade, he accepted many bit roles in film and TV. The next turning point was being cast in the TV show Scream Queens (2015-2016), where he took on the role of frat boy Chad Radwell. The show gave him the visibility he craved and showed off his incredible comedic timing. Next, Powell received positive reviews for his performance in the acclaimed historical drama Hidden Figures (2016), which focused on the role played by AfricanAmerican female mathematicians at NASA during the space race. Powell played John Glenn – an iconic American astronaut and senator which required a polished, elegant portrayal. Powell didn’t disappoint.

Without a doubt, one of the biggest turning points in his career was being cast in Top Gun: Maverick. He originally auditioned for the role of Rooster (which went to the magnificent Miles Teller), but he impressed Tom Cruise so much that he was offered the role of Hangman – the modern version of Iceman, memorably played by Val Kilmer. It was a supporting role, but it got him noticed, and soon after, bigger roles started coming in. 2023 was a big year for Powell. He received critical praise for Hit Man, which he co-wrote and produced. He also appeared in Anyone But You – a romantic comedy set in Sydney, Australia – alongside Sydney Sweeney, and the sparks certainly flew (both onscreen and off, allegedly).

Although both Top Gun: Maverick and Hit Man did well at the box office, the latter marked a star-making moment in Powell’s career. In this film, he plays a philosophy professor who doubles as an undercover hitman, hired by the police to capture those who hire assassins to ‘end’ their enemies. Instead of playing a standard thug, the character changes his persona for every job. The aim is to be the person the client envisions; one they can trust enough to admit they want someone else dead. Powell certainly convinces, donning various disguises and adopting new personalities with ease. The film is fun, fastpaced, and tension-packed – a must for those who enjoy thrillers with a comedic touch.

Powell is open about what he feels makes a great actor: vulnerability. As he told Men’s Journal, he aims to avoid acting “like nothing hurts… vulnerability is the greatest sense of masculinity.” He credits Denzel Washington with shaping his philosophy about acting. The Oscarwinning actor advised Powell to run his own race, to avoid measuring himself constantly

against other actors or emulating their paths. Powell additionally avoids resting on his laurels, choosing roles that push him out of his comfort zone. In many interviews, he has spoken about his craving for challenging, varied roles that allow him to grow as an actor.

Powell is keen on honing his skills in other creative areas, not just acting. He values lifelong learning, insisting that “education is never done.” Having proven himself as a prolific writer and producer, he is forging a path that will allow him to remain in the industry should he decide to ditch acting. His versatility can be credited to his keen awareness of how tough it is to make it. He notes that when he was starting in the industry, small parts in TV or film could sustain actors economically for long stretches. Today, he says, “the business no longer supports struggling actors.”

Before becoming the A-lister he is today, he worked in various jobs, reading scripts for studios, writing his own scripts, and hustling to raise money for short films. He is also open about the intense

pressure and self-doubt that can plague actors. After watching his performance in Hidden Figures, for instance, he vomited after seeing a rough cut, convinced that he had ‘ruined’ the film. Today, he knows that you cannot take success for granted, nor can you assume it will continue indefinitely. The daily grind is what matters.

Powell has many upcoming projects, so fans will be spoilt for choice. He’s slated to star in the J.J. Abrams-directed fantasy film Ghostwriter, starring alongside Jenna Ortega, Emma Mackey, and Samuel L. Jackson. Screen Rant has a list of six upcoming movies for Powell, so stay tuned and make sure to catch The Running Man in November! e

RAFAEL DE MEDINA

20TH DUKE OF FERIA AND FASHION CREATOR

What do a duke, a background in finance, and fashion have in common? Well, Rafael de Medina actually, the stylish aristocrat who is also the creator of the successful men’s fashion brands Scalpers and MR. AB, whose first shop opened in Marbella this autumn.

The Duke of Feria was in Marbella to personally oversee the opening of the new MR. AB boutique at the elegant Forum Marbella on the Golden Mile in October. Rafael de Medina has a successful trajectory in fashion that spans almost 25 years but this wasn’t always evident. Belonging to one of Spain’s leading aristocratic families, he studied finance in Washington DC before joining Credit Suisse. From within this very corporate environment there was no hint that he would later leave the world of finance to embrace a bold, creatively driven project in fashion, also not when he inherited the titles of 20th Duke of

Feria and Marquess of Villalba in 2002, at the age of 23.

This very fact made Rafael one of the most eligible bachelors in the country and combined with his good looks and charm he could have rested on his laurels and become a jetset socialite, but the young man had something to prove to himself and seized the opportunity to launch his own project. Upon leaving Credit Suisse he had a very clear idea of the goal he had in mind – creating a men’s fashion brand that would earn its place in the market both in Spain and beyond. “I have always loved design and good quality,” says Rafael. “Forms, colour tones, and textures derived from fine materials such as quality cotton, wool, and

linen are a wonderful form of expression.”

BUILDING AN INTERNATIONAL BRAND

Now you might think that a well-connected aristocrat with a background in banking would have lined up private or corporate investors to back his new venture, but Rafael decided to go it alone and build the brand up from grassroots level. “A lot of new ventures require a million euros or so to get design, production, marketing and sales going but many don’t make it because perhaps the original concept is not strong enough, maybe not authentic enough. I made the conscious decision to start very slowly and let Scalpers grow into itself and become established in the market on very sound foundations.” ›

Working with a group of friends and a small team of industry specialists he created a launch collection, sourced the right manufacturers, and set about creating the accompanying storytelling that communicated what Scalpers was about. “We grew slowly at first but steadily, gradually gathering pace and evolving into a true brand. This meant working very hard and paying a great amount of attention to expanding the franchise, managing the stores, and making sure they looked and felt just right, training our staff and imbuing them with the brand approach and philosophy, keeping the collections flowing and evolving, dealing with the logistics, the financial part, and of course the marketing and brand building.”

After the first store opened in Madrid more followed across the country and later abroad too. A great help was also acceptance into the El Corte Inglés department stores and before long Scalpers was a recognised men’s apparel name with growing momentum and a turnover of €35 million a year. “We had created it out of

nothing and built it up before I sold my Scalpers stocks to a large fund... and began working on my next project.”

MR. AB

A visionary does not copy and paste but continues to evolve and improve, so Rafael embarked upon the creation of a new concept for men’s clothing. Initially focused online, MR. AB has again gone on to be a huge success both in Spain and internationally. “You need to know your clientele and be able to cater for and communicate with them,” says Rafael. “MR. AB inhabits a slightly different market space than Scalpers, so there are subtle but important differences, and this translates to the design, the materials, the marketing, and the presentation, indeed the whole concept behind it.”

With MR. AB, he wanted to bridge the gap between adventurous sporty clothing and elegant men’s fashion, so the couture focuses on clothes that are comfortable, practical to wear, and fit well but are also stylish. “Important was the sourcing of four-way stretch for highend shirts, polos, cardigans,

trousers, and t-shirts. We use fine Italian wool, linen, and cotton but these high quality, high-tech materials are one of the distinguishing features of the brand. They match adventure with elegance.” Though originally a men’s brand, MR. AB has just launched its first line of women’s clothing, a classic trench coat in navy blue.

“MR. AB is high-end but low-key, without big showy logos. It focuses on quality materials and design made for practicality, comfort, and modern style with a classic touch, and we’re very proud to have now opened our first store, which expands the concept by offering the look and feel of a refined living room where we also offer and sell premium quality coffee, Marqués de Murrieta wines, Assouline books, Bowers & Wilkins speakers and more. It’s a new kind of sensory shopping experience that makes it more fun and rewarding, but come to the Forum Marbella and experience it for yourself,” says brand visionary Rafael de Medina.

SETTING A NEW PORTAL STANDARD AND ELEVATING SPANISH REAL ESTATE

Real estate is one of the dominant sectors of our region and also a prime mover in the national Spanish economy, but for those used to the order and accountability of more structured property sectors it can seem rather uncontrolled at times. Chris Dyson and Mauricio Umansky are using their tried and tested LA formula to take Costa del Sol realty into a new era.

Idyllic places attract dreamers, yes, but also those who can afford to acquire their own little bit of paradise. The unspoiled innocence of such locations soon converts into a halcyon jetset location brimming with authentic style and glamour, and over time this in turn attracts many day-tripping

visitors. Waves of tourism ensue, making what is now a globally known destination the envy of all and the stuff that daydreams are made of. Before long, those who can, buy into the dream and gradually a growing number of people have the means to access paradise and the promises of lifestyles of the rich and famous that it holds.

So far, this is an inspirational story that describes Marbella and other beauty spots like it, but if you’re not careful it can also produce a downside. Concentrations of money and beauty, be it natural or human, arouse the voracity in humankind that if unchecked has the potential to sully even the most beautiful place. ›

“Our platform takes the best of a successful methodology and technological application of the California market and applies it to a highly dynamic but still younger market such as that of the Costa del Sol"

Marbella, like others, has experienced this too, and while we now live in generally more controlled times it remains surprising to see just how unregulated its most important economic sector – real estate – continues to be. This leaves the door open for the various forms of malpractice and misconduct that have tarnished the hard-earned name of a five-star brand, regardless of the fact that the majority

of actors in this sector abide by professional codes of conduct.

SOLVING THE PROBLEM

If the problem is the dysfunction created by marginal groups within an industry then the solution must clearly be to set standards and enforce their adherence. The problem is that for a long time now the property sector in Spain and in particular on the

Costa del Sol has lacked the regulations, transparency, and professional demands that are made of the same industry in many countries of the North, where membership of governing bodies, acquiring professional qualifications , and complying with official codes of procedure, knowhow, and conduct are required to be maintained – at the risk of penalties and ultimately exclusion from the profession. ›

There are movements afoot locally and nationally to address this situation but it is a big task and not one that will allow itself to be resolved at short notice. The digital era has similarly contributed as much to the problem as it has to the solution, producing more advanced online platforms and portals yet not resolving issues of professional piracy. This can include misinformation about prices, products, and locations, and search results of properties that often no longer exist, are duplicated, and/or are blatantly misleading. The result is a system in which buyers, sellers, and agents cannot rely on a solid base of information amid an often confusing and blurry

buying, selling, and marketing process.

INTRODUCING LA’S TRIED AND TESTED METHOD

“We’re not pretending to have reinvented real estate, but what we do have is a set of tried and tested tools that have evolved out of what is very likely the most highly competitive and regulated real estate market in the world,” says Chris Dyson, CEO of TheNLS.com, a new property portal that has recently been launched and is set to transform the sector, not just on the Costa del Sol but across Spain. “If you find it challenging to work in what is at times a somewhat chaotic and unregulated market, imagine what you could achieve with reliable, accuracy-checked data at your disposal, verified listings and mandates, top-end marketing and professional tools, all the technical and legal references you need, as well as an international highvalue network of colleagues, mentors, and clients.”

Though originally from the UK, Chris has made his

career in the ultra-competitive high-stakes property market of Beverly Hills and Los Angeles, cutting his teeth on its challenges and rewards to emerge as one of the most successful professionals in the sector. “I have had the privilege of working closely with Mauricio Umansky, one of the most highly recognised luxury brokers in the world, who is also the co-founder of TheNLS.com. Together, we are bringing some of the tools that help realtors in tough markets such as LA thrive. Helping navigate the competition, being knowledgeable about the market and the regulations, as well as getting the most out of their time, their talent, and their prospects. We want to introduce tools that help make Spanish agents more productive, more valuable, and more profitable. Imagine having that kind of wind at your back instead of headon in your career here in Marbella.”

MARBELLA REAL ESTATE, BUT SAFER AND MORE POWERFUL

Listening to Chris and the

ways in which the NLS portal functions, an analogy comes to mind of the comparison between a faster, wellprotected racing car gaining time on the track against an older, slower, and less safe model. “You could put it that way,” says Chris. “Our platform takes the best of a successful methodology and technological application of the California market and applies it to a highly dynamic but still younger market such as that of the Costa del Sol. It provides extra protection in the form of verified listing contracts and information while also boosting speed, power, and therefore performance through a comprehensive range of more agile, easy-to - use tools.”

Having spent his first years in real estate working in the Marbella and later Costa Blanca markets before making the move to the USA, Chris knows both markets well and can therefore make clear comparisons. “What we’re bringing to Marbella is the outcome of many years at the hard forefront of Los Angeles’ luxury property

market, where you deal with international billionaires, Hollywood stars, and homes now sometimes in excess of $100 million, such as the Playboy Mansion sold by Mauricio who was the first person on the planet to break through that price barrier.”

“People are quickly recognising the value The NLS is bringing to the Spanish market. Leading firms like Solvilla, Engel & Völkers, Panorama, Homerun Brokers, BHHS, and many more are already on board — uniting local expertise with international best practices to elevate the real estate experience for everyone.”

“I’m proud to have the backing of Spain’s top brokerages, but our mission goes beyond the elite. We’re

building a platform where all agents can thrive, grow their business, and raise their standards in a professional, transparent, and protected environment. However, malicious behaviour or data misuse will never be tolerated — The NLS is here to foster collaboration, not competition at the expense of ethics.”

“If you’re an agent committed to excellence, this is your invitation. Join The NLS today and get your first three months on us. Become part of the movement that’s redefining Spanish real estate.”

WHAT’S IN STORE FOR US?

WEB 3.0 AND THE METAVERSE

If you’re like most people, by now you’re a verified digital junkie, staring into some screen or another for a good part of every waking day. You can’t even remember life before the smartphone, just 20 years ago, and have become fully hooked on any combination of social

information feeds, and rage bating. But what if that is just the beginning of an ongoing world and life-changing digital transformation?

The new millennium saw the arrival of the Web 2.0 Internet experience that got us used to surfing the net, shopping online, social media, and both producing and consuming never-ending content. Today, we’re about to step through another looking glass and into the world of 3.0, which is being touted as the next evolution of

the Internet, focusing on decentralisation, transparency, and user ownership. Now that sounds pretty good but generally speaking the lofty pitches haven’t quite produced the pure, service-driven Internet and harmonious global society that we’ve been promised.

The reason behind the optimism, however, is the fact that those in the process of designing and creating Web 3.0 are modelling it on the blockchain technology that drives cryptocurrency transactions, with which

tokens are said to become the currency of choice for the new online world. What’s more, apps will be decentralised, running on blockchain networks rather than centralised servers. This could indeed offer greater security for your personal data and digital assets such as regular or crypto accounts, your ID documents, NTFs (New Technology Files), and intellectual property –and the system also offers so-called Smart Contracts that are self-generated digital agreements obviating the need for intermediaries.

The promise is that from now on you will be able to control your

own data and online presence, that you can bypass the middleman on transactions, and that online searches will become more accurate and efficient. The latter is the easiest to believe, with the advent of the likes of Chat GPT, but in a world dominated by commercial interests and an evergrowing government obsession in the affairs and even personal opinions of its citizens, it's hard to imagine that the ‘system’ will just hand over all that control back to you and me. In fact, isn’t ‘data’ about each of us one of the greatest assets in the world today, and also in keeping with the growing

trend of public sector interference in private life?

THE METAVERSE

So, if you’re not that interested in the bigger picture and the potential of modern technology to create a ‘Big Brother’ surveillance society and really only want to know how it all will affect your online shopping, information, and entertainment experience, then the Metaverse is likely to become the point of reference. The essential change will be a shift from a two-dimensional to a three-dimensional experience, hence the term: the Immersive Digital Universe. ›

VISITESSENTIALMAGA

Not only will you enter this world through an avatar persona and move around it as if you were walking into a digital simulation of the real world, but it will become your world – an immersive space designed by you, your interests, and the algorithms that will inevitably track your exploits. In this way, you will be able to interact with others and become part of communities (digital, of course), pursue your hobbies and interests in a more lifelike manner, and eventually perhaps lead two lives – a physical one in the natural, real world and a virtual one in your digital

fantasy. The 3D reality part of it builds on virtual, enhanced, and extended reality technology, but it is the personal parallel world th at is being created –it will continue to exist and evolve even when users log off – that is worrisome, given how potentially addictive this level of immersion could become. If we’ve already lost whole generations to gaming, social media, and the likes of Tik Tok, how much worse will it be when people ‘disappear’ into their own worlds? One could even foresee a situation

where a good proportion of people stop interacting and functioning in the real world to become virtual zombies, addicted to the digital dream scenarios they’ve created for themselves.

Already, experts are calling in doubt claims about the decentralised and security-optimised nature of Web 3.0, let alone the potential dangers that a highly immersive Metaverse could have on society, not to mention the commercial exploitation and manipulation that could ensue. Just in case, this might be a good time to revisit those Matrix movies. e

DECOHUB

BRINGS DESIGN TO LIFE

The world of design and how it is represented visually is experiencing a quantum leap that will take it into new levels of possibilities. Not only is the latest technology making newly enhanced forms of immersive visualisation a reality – as if you’re not just viewing someone’s creative concepts but actually experiencing them –it is also broadening and altering the scope of design itself.

WORDS MICHEL CRUZ PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF DECOHUB
Imagining

We’re in an age of change driven by digital developments that are affecting almost everything we do, opening up whole new horizons for those fields that depend on technological processes. The sophistication of the tools at the disposal of architects, graphic artists, and other designers has been growing steadily over the past decades, but now it is entering a new phase altogether in which the twodimensional representation of concepts

and ideas that we’re accustomed to will be challenged and gain a third dimension. Such ideas used to be presented on paper, in printed form, then evolved into the websites, PDF brochures, and related digital forms that we’ve become used to.

However, as the Internet itself continues to evolve into an increasingly immersive 3D version of itself, showing off your design concepts becomes a threedimensional ‘journey’ that engages more of our senses. In other words, it makes everything from architectural styling to home décor and industrial design more ‘real’. › Designers can incorporate greater complexities thanks to AI

The technology behind these ‘step in and walk through’ rather than just look-at presentations is VR (virtual reality), a system that changes design plans into moving ‘video’ visuals that enable you for instance to view a property without physically being there. You can open the front door and follow the layout from room to room, decoration included. Such systems have become increasingly sophisticated,

eventually developing into ER (enhanced reality) representations that are ever more realistic in creating the sensation that you’re really there.

DECOHUB MAKES YOU FEEL IT

If design is above all a sensory and emotional experience then DecoHub brings architecture, interior design, and other visual artforms to life. It is often said that people buy homes

with their eyes and hearts, so the design platform created by DecoHub enables professionals in a range of fields to present their concepts and ideas in a way that engage the senses as never before.

Using DecoHub, their work is transformed into art, giving them the ability to create truly eye-catching ‘step-in’ experiences within the architecture of the multispace that is generated by AI-enhanced design. ›

Examining a new world of design realities

As a result, the DecoHub platform makes you not just see and appreciate design but actually live and experience it. If the designer has done their job well your senses will tingle and your emotions will tell you if this is the look and feel that’s right for you. Using this technology, DecoHub explores whole new possibilities not just in how to represent design concepts but also opens new possibilities for the creative process itself,

and this will be reflected in a whole new generation of architectural and interior styling that assimilates technical complexities with ease to produce more fluid, harmonious design.

HOW IT WAS CONCEIVED A DISCUSSION WITH CEO DAVID MILLÓN

David Millón, the man behind the creation of DecoHub, has spent more than 20 years working at the intersection

of design, innovation, and marketing, holding senior positions in multinational design-oriented companies such as Philips Lighting and Villeroy & Boch. “I’ve led international brand strategies, launched flagship showrooms, and collaborated with some of the most recognised names in interior design, as well as global brands such as Cosentino, Bang & Olufsen, Lladró, Glamora, and others.” ›

Amir Hossein Noori design on DecoHub
Alejandra Pombo explores new possibilities on DecoHub

DecoHub is the culmination of this experience, bringing together architects, 3D/CGI artists, digital innovators, and marketing strategists who share one passion: reimagining how the industry can connect, collaborate, and communicate in the digital era.

“It emerged from a simple observation: that the design world was missing a truly immersive ‘phygital’ (physical-

digital) platform where brands, designers, and end clients could experience projects before they were built. After years of working with both manufacturers and architects, I saw a gap between traditional presentations (catalogues, renderings, showrooms) and the new possibilities of immersive and virtual technology. DecoHub was born to bridge that gap.”

Q – WHO IS THE SERVICE PRIMARILY AIMED AT?

“DecoHub is conceived

for the premium design ecosystem, brands that wish to showcase their products at the next level, globally, and with optimal impact, but also architects who want to visualise and present their projects in a more compelling way. In addition, the system also has value for the hospitality, F&B, retail, and residential sectors where people require a next-level means to inspire investors, clients, and guests through immersive, visual-sensory storytelling.”

Bringing nature into the home

Q – WHAT ARE THE SYSTEM’S MAIN FACILITIES AND ADVANTAGES?

“Firstly, the immersive brand experiences created by the 3D/VR environment where products and designs are placed within architectural contexts. Secondly, there is a high element of co-creation in which brands and designers can develop concepts together within DecoHub, and then there is of course also the global reach and impact of a digital system of this kind, and the visual and sensory impact it creates. Moreover, you can blend the virtual experience with physical showrooms and events that will wow people, and its online forms can also track visitor engagement, downloads, and responses very accurately.” ›

The changing face of design

Designer Alejandra Pombo gives free reign to her creativity on DecoHub

Q – HOW DOES THE PLATFORM WORK?

“At its core, DecoHub is an immersive design marketplace. Users can explore curated virtual spaces, interact with products, and even customise them in real time. Designers can upload projects, brands, and integrate their collections. Plus, clients can walk through entire environments using standard devices, without the need for VR headsets.” ›

Erico Navazo creates sensorial interiors on DecoHub

Q – HOW DO YOU SEE DECOHUB CHANG ING THE WAY DESIGN PROJECTS ARE CREATED AND PRESENTED?

“ We believe DecoHub shifts the paradigm from static to interactive. Instead of showing a mood board or a PDF brochure, designers and brands can now invite clients into a living environment where they feel, test, and interact with the design. This increases emotional connection, reduces misunderstandings, and accelerates decision-making. In short, DecoHub presentations turn into immersive journeys.”

Q – HOW DO YOU SEE DESIGN EVOLVING NOW?

“Design will become more collaborative, more transparent, and more experiential. The boundaries between physical and digital will blur, enabling a new kind of phygital design culture — one that is global, sustainable, and emotionally engaging. Ultimately, we see

DecoHub as part of the future where design is not only about spaces, but about stories, emotions, and connections, and this will open up a third dimension for creative concepts.”

Keys Soulcare is a holistic beauty and skincare brand that inspires you to care for your whole self. Its founder, the multiple Grammy-awardwinning musician Alicia Keys, recalls years of struggling with her skin. “As a kid starting out in the music industry, there was so much pressure – who I should be, how I should show up – it just made my skin worse.” Things began to change for the better, she says, when she started taking care of herself, both inside and out. She founded Keys Soulcare to encourage others to take care not only of their skin but also of their soul, “because that’s where the light comes from.”

INNER CHILD MEET AND LEARN TO REPARENT YOUR

“For in every adult there dwells the child that was, and in every child there lies the adult that will be” Yong Kang Chan

Have you ever faced a situation that triggered a reaction in you so intense that it made you feel out of control? Imagine, for

instance, that you are at a meeting and when it’s your turn to speak, a colleague cuts you off mid-sentence. Your blood starts to boil, you feel belittled, and a string of ‘automatic negative thoughts’ (ANTs) appear, such as,

“He thinks he’s better than me,” “He’s trying to step on me to impress the boss at my cost,” or “There he goes again being ultra-competitive and putting me down.” You tell your colleague, perhaps more aggressively than you

MARISA CUTILLAS

would have liked, “Hey, Jim, I’m speaking. You interrupted me.” Your body language and voice show how much his actions have annoyed you. Later, you regret your impulsiveness. You wish you had expressed yourself more respectfully. Yet, it seems like someone took over your mind and body… that person could be your inner child. Research suggests that around two-thirds of adults have experienced at least one adverse childhood experience (ACE). These experiences can include physical or emotional abuse, being abandoned or neglected, losing a family member, having a mentally ill parent, and being a child of a divorced or separated parent. Childhood trauma can have a significant impact on your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. When a situation or person triggers your inner child to surface, you may jump to conclusions and react emotionally, rather than responding calmly to the problem. In the example

above, your colleague may not have realised they interrupted you, and the last thing they may have wanted is to put you down. It would make sense, perhaps, to calmly say you would like to finish what you were saying, or even speak to them after the meeting. Inner child therapy is all about identifying childhood trauma and ‘reparenting’ yourself in a way that honours your thoughts and emotions and allows you to behave in a mature and purposeful way. The origins of inner child therapy are typically attributed to Swiss psychologist Carl Jung, who developed the idea of a ‘child archetype’ to represent the lasting impact of childhood experiences on adult behaviour. Jung espoused that unresolved childhood traumas, unmet needs, and experiences led to patterns of emotional and behavioural issues in adulthood. In the 1990s, counsellor John Bradshaw introduced the concept of inner child healing

to a broader audience in his seminal work, Homecoming: Reclaiming and Healing Your Inner Child. Today, ‘inner child work’ is not a clinical term, but it is a widely used approach to address past hurts by acknowledging and nurturing the suppressed emotions and memories of childhood. Inner child work can be emotionally arduous, especially if your past was traumatic. It is essential to conduct this work alongside a therapist, rather than revisit traumatic childhood events alone. Your therapist can help prevent retraumatisation and ensure your work is effective. Inner child therapy can encompass various types of therapy, including cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), which focuses on the interplay between your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. Another popular therapy is internal family systems (IFS) therapy, which espouses that we all have several parts living within ›

us that fulfil both healthy and unhealthy roles. Life events or trauma, however, can force us out of those healthy roles into extreme roles. A third modality of therapy that may be helpful is psychodynamic therapy, which focuses on healing from past trauma.

There are also helpful steps you can take to reparent yourself, including:

» Starting a dialogue with your inner child (choose any age – five, eight, 12, and so forth). Ask them how they are and if they would like to

share anything with you, and listen to what they have to say.

» Write a letter to your inner child and allow them to respond in kind.

» Say nurturing things to your inner child (such as “I accept you,” “I hear you,” and “I’m sorry”).

» Look at photographs of yourself as a child and tell them everything they needed to hear back then; allow them (and your present self) to receive these messages.

» Think and write about what you loved doing when you

were young, and make time to do these things now.

» Engage in meditation and creative visualisation with your inner child.

As you can imagine, inner child work is a profound topic that warrants indepth exploration. One book I highly recommend is Reconciliation: Healing the Inner Child by Thich Nhat Hanh. The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk and Introduction to Internal Family Systems by Richard Schwartz are also good starting points. e

The Coast may have one of the mildest winters in Europe, but our pets still have specific needs as the weather gets cooler. Humid nights, chilly mornings, and strong winds can all require extra effort to keep our pets comfortable. From understanding your pet’s breed to investing in warm bedding, these measures are small but can have a significant impact on your four-pawed best friend’s quality of life.

BREED, AGE, AND HEALTH

Puppies, senior animals, shorthaired breeds, and those with joint issues or weaker health may be more sensitive to the cold. Young dogs and cats have not yet developed the sufficient muscle tone, body fat, or coat density they need to retain warmth. Older pets generally have slower metabolisms and may experience arthritis, circulatory problems, heart conditions, or thyroid imbalances, which can

make damp or cold conditions particularly uncomfortable. The cold tends to worsen joint issues like arthritis, and dampness can cause skin conditions or exacerbate respiratory problems, so it’s vital to watch out for signs such as limping, lethargy, stiffness, coughs, or ear infections. Regular check-ups after the summer are a good idea, as you can discuss behaviours like slower movement or tiredness. Your pet may benefit from treatment or gentle daily exercise, such as short, frequent walks during the sunniest moments of the day, to boost circulation.

SHELTER AND BEDDING

Ensure your pet has a cosy, dry spot to sleep, away from air currents. Older pets, in particular, may benefit from being in heated interiors, especially during humid weather. Invest in soft blankets, raised beds, and insulated pads to prevent cold ground and damp floors from absorbing available heat. Whenever possible, and especially during nighttime and wet periods, pets should be kept

indoors.

If your pet has arthritis, consider investing in a memory foam or solid orthopaedic foam bed to alleviate pressure points and provide extra cushioning. Opt for beds made from high-quality materials, with removable, washable covers that keep bedding allergen-free. Choose beds with non-slip bases that help prevent accidents by keeping the bed firmly in place. Some beds have bolsters, which provide extra support for your pet’s head and joints. Check out www.zooplus.es, www.knuffelwuff.es, and www. mrfluffyfriend.es for orthopaedic beds.

After walks, dry your pet thoroughly, especially their paws, belly, and ears. Damp fur can lose its insulating properties, increasing the risk of infection. If you use indoor heating, avoid raising the temperature too high, as this can dry out the air. If you live in a dry area, consider using a humidifier to boost comfort for pets with respiratory issues. Position your pets’ beds so they can bask in the midday sun. ›

WINTER CARE TIPS FOR CATS AND DOGS

PAW AND SKIN CARE

Pavements, stones, or soil may hold moisture that can get trapped between a pet’s paws. Wipe them after walks and check toes for irritants. Use pet-safe balms if your pet’s nose or paws need a bit of extra hydration. I love Skin Soother by the Natural Dog Company, which is made with organic ingredients and can be used on dermatitis, rashes, hot spots, cuts, burns, and dry, itchy, irritated skin. Another fantastic product is Nina Woof Vegan Nose & Paw Balm, made with shea butter to repair, nourish, and moisturise skin.

PRIORITISING A HEALTHY DIET

In colder or wetter weather, pets may burn more energy trying to stay warm, so it is essential

to monitor their weight and appetite. It is also advisable to consult your vet if you suspect there is a need to increase your pet’s caloric intake. But don’t overdo it – activity often decreases in winter. Even if it’s cooler, pets require access to clean water. Note that cats sometimes drink less if the water is too cold. Consider warming water a little before offering it to your cat.

ADDING ITEMS TO YOUR PET’S WINTER WARDROBE

Some dogs with fine coats can benefit from jackets or jumpers, especially if you’re visiting a snowy area. A good rain jacket, in particular, is handy in the spring, autumn, and winter. Rukka Pets has a sturdy rain jacket that protects your dog’s

coat while leaving their legs free for walking. Hurtta also has a stylish, durable raincoat that will last a lifetime. Both these models can be found on www. petster.eu. This site also features thicker winter coats and coats that insulate dogs’ legs and bodies.

STAYING ACTIVE

Just because the weather is cooler doesn’t mean pets should be sedentary. Keep your pets active with plenty of indoor play and walks in the warmest part of the day. Cold, damp, dark days can lead to a subdued mood in pets, too. Maintain routines for feeding, outdoor walks, and play. Ensure your pets have toys, puzzles, and games to keep them mentally stimulated and busy. e

Find out how St. Regis Residences at Finca Cortesin has raised the bar for hospitality and refinement on the Coast. Catch up on the latest news on the local business front. Have a look at what’s been happening at recent important local events.

THE ST. REGIS RESIDENCES CASARES, COSTA DEL SOL

If luxury living is the result of a refined blend of exceptional ingredients, then this landmark development, set within the exclusive country club environment of Finca Cortesin, stands as a true expression of that ideal. This is five-star serviced living brought to the Costa del Sol — a rare convergence of architecture, design, and hospitality, where refinement meets authenticity and every detail speaks of timeless craftsmanship.

HOMES AS AN EXPRESSION OF LIFESTYLE

There was a time when luxury was defined simply by owning a home in Marbella. Over time, this evolved into possessing a modern villa or residence equipped with every imaginable comfort and a long list of amenities. Today, true luxury goes beyond architecture and aesthetics — it is about curating a life of privacy, service, and effortless enjoyment within a setting of natural beauty and sophistication. The St. Regis Residences, Casares, Costa del Sol, embodies this evolution. By merging the exclusivity of a private home with the legendary service of St. Regis, Caledonian has created something entirely new for Europe’s southern coast — a destination where the art of living takes architectural form.

As Enrique López Sastre, Sales & Marketing Director at Caledonian explains, luxury is not a static concept but a living

philosophy. “At Caledonian, we don’t aim to build many projects — we aim to build legacies. Each development is conceived as a work of art that will endure through time. We dedicate years to perfecting every detail, ensuring that what we create is not only beautiful but meaningful. Our goal is to craft homes that elevate the way people live, places that resonate with emotion and stand as timeless references of quality and purpose.”

For Enrique López Sastre, the idea of home has transcended the purely functional to become a deeply personal experience — a lifestyle shaped by the environment, the light, and the intangible sense of belonging that great places evoke. It is this belief that guided Caledonian’s approach to Casares: not simply to build residences, but to orchestrate a new way of living, one that blends privacy, service, and Mediterranean soul. ›

DESIGN, CONCEPT, SERVICE, AND LIFESTYLE

Nestled within the serene landscape of the Costa del Sol, surrounded by gentle hills and the shimmering Mediterranean, Caledonian joined forces with the St. Regis brand to create a new benchmark in contemporary luxury. The architectural vision, led by renowned Brazilian architect Marcio Kogan and his celebrated Studio MK27, embraces minimalism, natural materials, and a seamless integration with the landscape. The homes

exude harmony and spatial poetry — inviting nature indoors through expansive glass surfaces and perfectly proportioned forms.

Each residence, ranging from 300 to 650m2 , has been designed with individuality and flow in mind.

The penthouses feature panoramic terraces and private pools; the groundfloor homes enjoy private gardens by acclaimed landscape designer Isabel Duprat; and the mezzanine apartments strike a perfect balance between intimacy and openness. Together,

they form a collection of living spaces that redefine what it means to live by the Mediterranean — modern yet rooted in the land’s timeless grace.

Enrique López Sastre highlights this commitment to discretion and understated sophistication: “Luxury is not about gold railings or shiny chandeliers; luxury is a lifestyle — the feeling of ease, privacy, and care that surrounds you every day.

At Finca Cortesin, you don’t simply buy a home; you embrace a philosophy and a way of life. The service,

Large open-plan interiors that open up the views

the atmosphere, the design — they all work together to create a sense of belonging that money alone cannot buy. That is what true luxury means to us.”

This philosophy extends to every detail, from the selection of noble but also durable materials — oak wood, natural stone, exposed concrete — to the flow of natural light and the gentle continuity between interior and exterior spaces. It is a vision of architectural restraint that allows beauty to breathe, where craftsmanship and proportion are elevated to an art form.

A LIFESTYLE DEFINED BY EXCELLENCE

At the heart of The St. Regis Residences, Casares, Costa del Sol, lies a 1,250m2 country club — a sanctuary of wellbeing, culture, and community. Here, residents can enjoy a spa with a heated indoor pool, sauna, Turkish bath, and treatment rooms; a fully equipped gym, yoga and Pilates studios; a wine bar, library, cinema, coworking area, and private event spaces. Every element has been designed to encourage a balance between wellbeing and sociability — a place to unwind, connect, and belong.

In keeping with the St. Regis tradition, residents benefit from their legendary butler service — an icon of hospitality for over 120 years. From arranging private dinners and personal experiences to ensuring every detail of daily life is cared for with discretion and precision, the butler service transforms ownership into an effortless pleasure. Residents also enjoy Platinum Elite status within the Marriott Bonvoy programme, unlocking access to exclusive privileges and experiences across the brand’s global portfolio. ›

The terraces of the penthouses at The St. Regis Residences

As Enrique notes, “When we sought a partner for this project, we wanted more than a name — we searched for a legacy and a way of adding value. St. Regis brings over a century of hospitality mastery, with an ethos that aligns perfectly with ours: an obsession with detail, a respect for craftsmanship, and a belief that service and authenticity are the truest forms of luxury. Together, we have created a model of living that transcends real estate — it’s a statement of culture, care, and legacy.”

SUSTAINABILITY AND INNOVATION

Beyond beauty and comfort, sustainability stands at the core of Caledonian’s philosophy. Each residence integrates cutting-edge environmental technologies, from solar panels and ultra-efficient ventilation systems to high-performance heat pumps and smart home automation. Every component is designed to minimise environmental impact while preserving comfort, engineering, and aesthetic integrity. It’s a seamless marriage

between sustainability and sophistication, where responsible living becomes effortless.

Caledonian’s in-house team of engineers and artisans source materials directly from leading European manufacturers, ensuring both quality and traceability. Innovative construction methods, such as the use of Accoya wood for exterior façades with a certified 50-year durability, underline the company’s commitment to long-term excellence.

As Enrique López Sastre explains, this is part of their

identity: building homes meant to last generations, not decades.

The St. Regis Residences, Casares, Costa del Sol, mark a new chapter in Europe’s luxury residential landscape — a place where architectural vision, artistry, and hospitality converge. With one-third of the project already sold and growing international demand from both European and American buyers for the forthcoming

second phase, the project has firmly established itself as one of the most coveted addresses in the Mediterranean. More than a development, it is a way of life — a sanctuary of refinement, serenity, and timeless elegance.

DINING AT THE RESTAURANTE CASINO MARBELLA GASTROBAR GAME ON!

If you have not visited the Casino Marbella, you will surely be impressed with the scale and prestige of the gaming operation, with a large salon of more than 3,500m 2 offering American Roulette, Blackjack, Poker, and an impressive array of slot machines. Did you know that it also features a well-appointed restaurant that is also open to members of the public who only want to dine?

Apart from maintaining long hours of service from 20:00 to 02:00 to satisfy the hunger pangs of those who are playing the tables or slot machines, the restaurant also welcomes visitors who appreciate excellent food and professional service. Set at the rear of the premises, a medley of circular, square, and rectangular tables adorned with immaculately starched white linen cloths vie for attention, amid imposing columns, a large wooden partition, backlit screens, suspended lamps, and positioned plants.

Under the guiding hand of talented

Executive Chef Agustín Román, who has triumphantly helmed the kitchen here for the best part of two decades, a compact menu beckons with appealing dishes that are served to the table in short order.

Our recent visit coincided with the introduction of additional plates on the new seasonal menu and the Maitre José Carlos was on hand to answer questions and to help with our selections. While you can sample two tasting menus, one involving choosing between five starters, two main courses, and three desserts, and the other a choice of five courses from eight options, we determined to order à la carte. ›

OUTSTANDING CUISINE

Sipping on chilled glasses of Anna Cordoniu Cava, we relaxed into the rarefied ambience of the venue, and with our appetites well and truly piqued, we mixed and matched from the starters that arrived on our table. Consisting of Crunchy Tuna Tacos with avocado cream and guacamole, Citrus Smoked Salmon with finely chopped onion and chives,

Eggs with Artichokes and Iberian Ham, and Chicken Pastelas – triangular pastry parcels stuffed with Moroccan seasoned minced chicken – these facilitated an exquisite range of flavours on our palates and were ideal for sharing.

Our evening continued in a similar vein with two of the new additions: wonderfully creamy Beef Cannelloni and a melt-in-

your-mouth Matured Beef Tataki lightly seared with a small blowtorch and plated tableside atop a piquant sauce. We also shared the Glazed Tuna, with Pumpkin purée and Spinach, and a tasty Chicken Kebab served with chips. Savouring these delicacies was a real pleasure, and their individual prices are incredibly reasonable for the standard of fare on offer. ›

If the dishes before had exceeded expectations, the desserts we capped off an enjoyable experience with were the icing on the cake: delicious, without being excessively heavy or overly sweet. The Three-texture Chocolate Trio, Homemade Coconut Sponge Cake with Matcha Ice Cream, and the Mahalabia with Pistachio, an iconic Middle Eastern dessert, were so good that they easily provided an excuse for a return visit and next time we will try our luck on the tables too.

With valet parking and a tempting collection of cocktails, wines and spirits, beers and soft drinks, the Casino Marbella is highly recommended for a special night out, whether gaming, dining, or both. Please remember to take your passport or ID card to gain admission. e

TOP MENU TRENDS

WORDS MARISA CUTILLAS
An elegant baked Alaska

If you’re anything like me, then one of the things you most enjoy about travel is the chance to immerse yourself in new culinary cultures. From trends in plant-based cuisine to street food that defies the laws of physics and artistry, food has the unique capacity to become part of our sense memory, whisking us back to magical moments with our loved ones. Thanks to Instagram and TikTok, culinary creations are allowing different cultures to communicate, share ideas, and obtain inspiration. Here are a few trends defining modern menus (both in their physical design and their contents), many of which are already present on the Coast.

NEW AESTHETICS

Starting with menu design, the size of modern menus has shrunk, with many establishments opting for vertical, half-page menus with no pages to flick through and fewer dishes to choose from. Within single-page layouts, tabs are created, so diners can easily identify appetisers, mains, desserts, and beverages.

Beyond reducing page counts, restaurants are finding ways to differentiate their brand from competitors. For instance, although white and off-white hues have been favoured over the past few years for their simplicity and readability, current restaurants are using pops of colour and handdrawn illustrations to add artistry and magic to their layouts. Some are abandoning white altogether and opting for backgrounds in colours like green or pink.

For an excellent example of what modern menus look like,

check out Lobito de Mar. The latter’s menu features stunning illustrations and designs inspired by sea life. Other trends in menu design include smaller fonts, less formal design styles, and traditional touches, such as wax seals, handwriting, and embossing. Some restaurants are harking back to the past, relying on vintage fonts and graphics featuring comfort food. A fine example of nostalgia at its best is The Burger Bar St Maarten’s one-page menu, which features a blend of photographs and illustrations.

THE VALUES BEHIND THE FOOD

Modern restaurateurs are keen to share their stories, inspirations, and values, to connect more deeply with their clientele, and they are doing so creatively, through text and imagery on their menus. One of my favourite

restaurants in London, Dishoom, shows exactly how menus can share a bit about a brand’s history, mission, and values. Its tagline, ‘From Bombay with Love’, sets the tone, and every dish has a backstory or connection to a broader cultural context. For instance, we learn that the Kejriwal (a dish comprising two friend eggs on chilli cheese toast) was a modern favourite at the Willingdon Sports Club in Tardeo. The menu tells us it was named after a member who ordered the dish repeatedly, because “he was not allowed to eat eggs at home.” We also read that the Akru (three spiced scrambled eggs served with plump, homemade buns and grilled tomato) is a café staple in Iran. There are a host of fascinating facts to discover, so if you do visit a Dishoom restaurant in London, make sure to give yourself a few extra minutes to read the menu! ›

STREET FOOD FRENZY

Popular street foods, ranging from Birria Tacos to Satay Skewers, Vietnamese Pho, Amritsari Kulcha, and Bánh Mi, are finding their way into the menus of popular bistros and high-end venues. Streetfood-inspired plates encourage shared dining, tantalising diners’ palates with spice, complexity, and optimal flavour balance. For instance, Mizon restaurant in New York serves Israeli street food delights, such as pita breads filled with ratatouille, moussaka, and lobster crème fraîche. Wahaca in London, meanwhile, entices diners

with vegan Mexican-style street food, such as plantain tacos, bean tostadas, meatless farm chicken and avocado tacos, and churros. The idea is for diners to share platters with foods they can pick up with their hands and enjoy with their favourite beer or wine.

ASIAN FLAVOURS REIGN SUPREME

Even in restaurants serving traditional cuisine (think Mediterranean or French), it isn’t uncommon to find touches of the inimitable spices and sauces that make Asian cuisine

a firm favourite for savvy diners. Dishes like Thai curries and Vietnamese soups are being reimagined in fine dining, as are dumplings, bao buns, and sushi-inspired small plates. Chefs are blending elements of Japanese umami, Korean heat, and Chinese street-food techniques with local ingredients and creative presentations. They are also employing ingredients such as miso, yuzu, sesame, soy, gochujang, and lemongrass in sauces, marinades, and dressings in trendy restaurants.

For instance, the elegant Koan

Bao buns are a trending street and restaurant food worldwide

restaurant in Denmark combines Korean cooking techniques and flavours with Nordic ingredients. La Sartén in Madrid, meanwhile, serves fare that features Spanish, Latin, and Asian ingredients and techniques. If you’re in Madrid, we recommend La Sartén’s gyozas, filled with slowcooked ribs, or the crisp wonton filled with beef, tomato, mint, basil, cilantro, and cardamom béchamel. ›

ALCOHOL-FREE DRINKS MENUS

As research increasingly shows the impact of our lifestyle choices, the culinary industry is ready to adapt to the demand for healthier options, including boozefree beverages on menus. Mockingbird Zero Proof Cocktail Bar in New York is renowned for its impressive list of non-alcoholic cocktails made with non-alcoholic spirits and uncommon ingredients. The establishment offers a host of alcohol-free versions of gin, whiskey, tequila, rum, vermouth, and apéritifs, as well as 13 beers and three ciders.

A chilled, alcohol-free mezcal margarita, anyone?

NOSTALGIC DESSERTS

If you were born in the 1980s or earlier, you may recall desserts like Crêpes Suzette served table-side in gloriously theatrical style. If you can’t think of a better experience than Fortnum & Mason’s afternoon tea, then you may crave their famous strawberry tarts,

layered chocolate cake, and Turkish delight. The good news is that nostalgic desserts are back with a vengeance. Get ready to order goodies like baked Alaska, panna cotta, and orange sponge cake, or a warm sticky toffee pudding served with a generous scoop of homemade vanilla ice-cream. If you’re visiting England, we also recommend Bettys Café Tea Rooms (located in York and Harrogate), where you will find exquisite Yorkshire curd tarts, Swiss chocolate cake, and a variety of scones served with clotted cream and jam. If Paris is more your penchant, make your way to Ladurée, for a host of traditional desserts ranging from éclairs to mille-feuille. e

ROBERT PARKER

Before Robert Parker, wine belonged to a privileged few — the sommelier, the collector, the olde-world gentleman in a tweed jacket. After Parker, it belonged to everyone with a glass and an opinion. The Maryland lawyer-turned-critic didn’t just describe wines; he changed how the world formed opinions about them.

In the late 1970s, wine writing was a polite echo chamber. Critics praised everything, few took risks, and most depended on advertising from the very producers they were reviewing. Parker, then a consumer protection lawyer in Buffalo with a sharp palate and a stubborn streak, decided to do things differently. He founded The Wine Advocate in 1978 — a plain, stapled newsletter that

promised independence, honesty, mailed out to subscribers.

His mission was simple but radical: tell the truth about wine, without fear or favour. He spoke directly to ordinary drinkers, not the industry elite.

Parker’s great innovation was the 100-point scoring system, borrowed from the American classroom. Wine, he believed, could be graded like an essay:

WORDS ANDREW J LINN

Raíz De Guzmán

95 was superb, 85 decent, 70 forgettable. The numbers gave clarity to a world mired in jargon. Critics called it reductive, but consumers loved it. They didn’t need to decode flowery descriptions; they could simply look at the score. For the first time, wine had a universal metric.

The turning point came in 1982. While wine critics in general dismissed Bordeaux’s new vintage as too ripe and flamboyant, Parker declared it one of the greatest ever made. Time proved him right. The wines were in unusual

demand — and so, suddenly, was Parker. Overnight, his newsletter became an international authority, and his palate, a market force.

With fame came power. Winemakers learned what Parker liked: bold, ripe fruit, silky textures, generous oak. Soon, they began making wines to please him — not always to express their own terroir. Across Bordeaux, Napa, and Rioja, a new international style emerged: lush, concentrated, crowdpleasing. By the 1990s, Parker’s influence had become

financial as much as sensory. A 96-point review could double the value of a wine before it even hit the shelves. Merchants timed their releases around his verdicts. Collectors treated his notes as scripture.

As Parker’s fame grew, so did the mythology around him. Winemakers courted him with rare vintages, lavish dinners, and, in one legendary case, an offer he would later describe as both shocking and absurd: a French vintner, desperate for a high score, allegedly offered his daughter in exchange for a favourable review. ›

Parker loved to tell the story — not for scandal, but as a moral fable about temptation and integrity. He declined, of course, but the tale captured how surreal his fame had become. But traditionalists accused Parker of flattening diversity and rewarding power over elegance. Yet even his fiercest detractors acknowledged his honesty, his incorruptibility, and the precision of his palate. He was, after all, the rare critic who never played the insider’s game. He allegedly paid for his own tastings, wrote his own copy, and stood by his opinions, however

unfashionable. Married, with one daughter, a modest man who happened to wield enormous power; a simple lawyer whose pen shaped fortunes but whose heart remained in his farmhouse kitchen with a glass of claret, his wife, and his dog. His health problems (including back and foot issues, later gout and arthritis) limited travel, but he remained intellectually curious and kind in correspondence with younger writers. Yet he could also be thin-skinned and combative when attacked. Critics accused him of arrogance; he saw himself as

defending integrity. He once said, “I don’t care if people like me — I care that they trust me.” Personally, he came across as more shy than vain. In conversation he was thoughtful, not snobbish, and almost embarrassed by his fame.

In the 2010s, Parker’s health began to decline and he sold The Wine Advocate (later acquired by Michelin), retired quietly, and watched a new digital generation of critics take his place. The data-driven, democratised, and sometimes divisive wine world no longer needed him. But it would never have existed without him. e
