ROME
‘The Eternal City’ or ‘Urbs aeterna’ to give it the Latin name, so called by the Roman poet Virgil in order to encapsulate its never-ending nature and not because it refuses to age, but because it has made aging an art form.
WORDS ADAM JACOT DE BOINOD
Indeed Rome is a city with so many sobriquets: ‘Caput Mundi’ (the head of the world) still nods knowingly at the past; SPQR is an acronym for 'The Senate and the People of Rome'; ‘Pax Romana’ was the peace which existed between nationalities within the Roman Empire, and ‘Urbi et orbi’ meaning ‘to the city and the world’ refers specifically to the Vatican in Rome. Indeed it’s the blessing that the pope uses when he addresses the world.
Rome is not so much a city as a civilisation in a state of stylish decay. Legend tells us the city was founded in 753 BC by Romulus, who famously dispatched his twin brother Remus. The Roman Republic (509 BC) was governed by an elite of elderly, eloquent schemers in sandals. Then came Julius Caesar, who made the Rubicon famous and the Ides of March fatal. The Republic slipped into Empire and so began a parade of emperors: some wise (Augustus), some wild (Nero), and others who made their horses into consuls (Caligula). By AD 117, Rome’s dominion stretched from the fog of Britannia to the sands of Arabia. Then, like all empires, it tottered. Visigoths, Vandals, and the passage of popes took turns at reshaping her.
And what grandeur to follow as The Renaissance dusted Rome off and gave her frescoes, domes, and of course Michelangelo. Then with what extravagance did the Baroque make her theatrical. ›
Roman Sculpture
Rome is best traversed not by car, nor tram, nor scooter (the latter being something of a high-stakes lottery), but by foot. To say that Rome is a city of layers is a cliché. Every espresso bar could once have been a senator's villa or a gladiator’s haunt. There really is something to see around every corner. You must see the Pantheon, in the city centre. It possesses such a remarkable and timeless elegance. Originally built by Hadrian as a temple to the Roman gods, it’s the best-preserved example of
ancient Roman architecture. The oculus, a circular opening at the apex of its dome, allows sunlight to stream into the cavernous interior which illuminates the marble columns and the intricate detailing adorning its walls. As I stepped inside I felt I had travelled back in time as I witnessed the full genius of Roman engineering and the reverence paid to their gods.
Close by lies the Piazza Navona, built atop the ancient Stadium of Domitian. This is Rome at its most baroque and flamboyant:
fountains by Bernini, façades by Borromini, and gelato sold in every conceivable hue of pistachio. Here, la passeggiata, that uniquely Italian ritual of aimless, graceful strolling, takes on an operatic flair. Roman couples, arm in arm, move as if choreographed by Fellini. No Roman itinerary is complete without the Forum. Walk among the broken columns, and you’ll hear Cicero declaiming in the rustle of olive leaves. From here, clamber up the Palatine Hill, named after palatium, which gave us the word ‘palace’. ›
Trevi Fountain
Equilibrio y Armonía en cada Bocado
Then, like any dutiful tourist, make your way to the Colosseum. Named not for its size (though it is colossal) but for the colossal statue of Nero that once stood nearby, which was finished in
80 AD as the largest amphitheatre ever built. It’s a symbol of ancient engineering prowess. Its imposing facade evokes the great spectacles of gladiatorial combat that once filled its arena: a word which comes from
the Latin harena, meaning sand, which covered the floor to soak up blood. It’s open from 9 am to one hour before sunset.
However I warn you that it’s very crowded and with such queues it’s probably better enjoyed from the outside. As I stood in its
The Pantheon
Trastevere
The Colosseum shadow I could almost hear the echoes of a bygone era. I marvelled at the precision with which its arches were crafted and the sheer scale of its construction.
If you seek a taste of the dolce far niente (‘the sweetness of doing nothing’), cross the Tiber to Trastevere, the ‘other’ side of Rome, its bohemian twin and meaning ‘across the Tiber’ which retains that outsider charm. It has that drop in pace so essential when
visiting a city. It’s definitely one of the capital’s prettiest districts. Here among the small and winding ivydraped lanes of Trastevere I climbed up to San Pietro in Montorio and its courtyard housing the architecturally impressive Tempietto, housing Bramante’s circular colonnaded tomb. It’s a masterpiece of harmony, expressing the High Renaissance at its acme and marking the traditional spot of St. Peter’s martyrdom. ›
Across Rome the Baroque facades are arresting in their extravagance. The churches are an invitation to perceive the divine. There are several exponents of this Baroque style which Rome so influentially gave to the world. Bernini is best to be revered at the Gallery Borghese. My favourite architect of the period is Borromini, a pioneer and a visionary who rivalled Bernini in gaining the patronage from the sequence of popes. His style was dramatic, pure, and clever to the extreme. You only have to peer up at
the walls and ceilings of the church Sant’Ivo alla Sapienza to see how brilliantly he has crafted a sense of harmony, often from impossible angles. Likewise at the church San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane he has managed to conjure up concave and convex beauty from extraordinary tight architectural proportions. Of course, no tour of Rome would be complete without the Vatican, the spiritual and administrative centre of the Catholic Church. Climb the steps of St. Peter’s Basilica, or even its towering dome, and survey the city as
Michelangelo did. You cannot talk about Roman architecture in earnest without mentioning it with its lavishly decorated interior and immense scale. It’s a testament to the power and influence of the Papacy throughout history. Its vast nave is adorned with masterful works of art which create an atmosphere of awe and reverence that is truly unparalleled. For here lies La Pieta, an early statue by Michelangelo that was to launch his career stratospherically. Within the Vatican Museums, you’ll find more
St Peter’s Basilica
masterpieces than most cities can claim in total: Raphael’s School of Athens, a fresco of philosopher-friends rendered with true genius; the Sistine Chapel, where Michelangelo’s Creation of Adam lingers mid-touch; and endless corridors lined with antiquities.
And finally, as dusk turns the stones to a gorgeous bronze colour, toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain with your right hand over left shoulder, as the ritual demands. As the coin splashes into Neptune’s watery realm, one makes the
inevitable promise: to return. And Rome smiles, knowing you will. Night-time is the best moment to see it when it’s just so romantic, when it parades before its illuminated backdrop and when it doesn’t have the distraction of the other buildings you see by day.
For places to stay, utter luxury comes at a price but you can’t do better than the recently opened Bulgari with its long and classical portico of travertine colonnades and telepathically attentive staff, or Hotel Hassler, with
its impressive white-hatted doormen and in walking distance of the luxury boutiques such as Valentino and Prada. Or Hotel Eden, located in a highly exclusive area and historically a magnet to all the stars with its ceilings covered in golden coffers and its rooms with the freshest of flowers. For somewhere cheaper, try the fresh and contemporary Radisson Collection Hotel, Roma Antica. You can’t beat a brand-new hotel. ›
In Rome, one doesn’t merely eat – one communes, one conducts a kind of edible liturgy. Each meal is a minor sacrament, every ingredient a relic. Begin with cacio e pepe: a dish so deceptively simple it could be mistaken for peasant fare, were it not for its divine alchemy. Just pasta, pecorino, and pepper. Yet here, simplicity masquerades as genius. The name itself is a taut little poem: cacio (cheese), pepe (pepper), and that perfectly Roman disdain for excess. From there, carciofi alla giudia: artichokes fried into a bronze ruffle offer a nod to the Jewish Ghetto’s culinary legacy. Giudia, from the Italian for ‘Jewish’, reminds us how gastronomy and geography entwine. No Roman feast omits supplì, those
molten orbs of rice and ragù: so named from the French surprise, because of the hidden mozzarella within. They are street food’s very best, hot and humble. For dessert, one must speak of maritozzo: a sweet bun cleaved open and stuffed with whipped cream. Its name derives from marito, husband, once offered as a breakfast gift from fiancé to fiancée. One bite and you, too, are wed. And to drink? A humble Frascati, dry and golden, best sipped while the sun gilds the trasteverini rooftops. Rome doesn’t feed you. It courts you, seduces you, baptises you in olive oil, and dusts you with grated grace. As the Italians say, a tavola non si invecchia: at the table, one does not grow old. ›

It’s often in some of the high-end hotels that top chefs preside. There’s Niko Romito restaurant at Bulgari for a real treat and there’s Simone Frezzotti at Modius on the Roof at Roma Antica.
I also love the unpretentious offering at Six Senses’s Bivium restaurant with its ecoconscious, progressive menu while, at a more modest cost, I highly recommend Ristorante Roof Garden at Hotel Forum with its panoramic view across the Forum.
Rome’s Fiumicino Airport is a breeze. Best advice is to pre-order a taxi to wait for you, especially if you need a child
seat, and you aren’t alone. A minivan will cost €70 for the 40-minute ride. Reliable, and the drivers are charming for the most part. On the way back the ‘official’ rate is €48 but agree with a cab at a rank beforehand. There is a bus service from the airport (€6) but it’s slow. Fastest option is the train, the Leonardo Express, which takes you to Termini station in 32 minutes (where it connects with both metro lines – the metro is fine but you will miss the sights!). The train runs every 15 minutes and costs €17,90. By the way, taxis in Rome are reasonable – a short journey in
the centre costs around €10. The city’s name, after all, gave birth to the word ‘romance’ and it does it generously. So “When in Rome, do as the Romans do”. e

ESCAPE TO THE COSTA DE LA LUZ
Valdevaqueros – one of the largest beaches in Spain
When others flock to the Costa del Sol, those of us who live here have a coastal paradise destination of our own – the ‘Coast of Light’.
Stretching from just after Algeciras to the natural border with Portugal at the Guadiana River, the Costa de la Luz covers most of coastal Cádiz and Huelva to form the Atlantic continuation of our own Costa del Sol. This also means that while we look out over the mildly warmer waters of the Mediterranean, the cooler deep blue Atlantic Ocean and above all cool sea breezes make the Costa de la Luz that much fresher and bearable at the height of summer. ›
The quaint old town of Tarifa, with Morocco on the other side
Humidity levels tend to be lower too, and this stretch of Spain’s littoral is covered in a long succession of coves, lagoons split from the ocean by sand bars, and extensive sandy beaches covered in what seems to be fine lighttoned powder that doesn’t stick to your feet. We’ll leave comparisons with the Costa del Sol’s beaches there. Backing these sandy shores are gentle hills covered in pine groves, with clear blue skies above and the sea-green of the Atlantic also allowing views across to Cape Spartel in Morocco if you happen to be in and around Tarifa.
Given what sounds like paradise, you must by now be
wondering why it is the Costa del Sol and not the Costa de la Luz that has become such a mecca for tourism and luxury living, but you see, there is one drawback. For much of the year, and the winter months in particular, this beautiful part of the world is tormented by the kind of winds that make unsuspecting pedestrians lose their footing and keep window shutters banging relentlessly. Such conditions are not for the faint-hearted, so while the Costa de la Luz is considered to be paradise for a good part of the year it is avoided by all save the most devoted kitesurfers during those ‘lesser’ months.
The upside of this is the fact that, together with the
region’s rugged topography, low population density, and ecosystems protected within national parks, the Costa de la Luz is generally devoid of those large tourist towns that have blighted other ‘costas’ on the Iberian Peninsula. Instead, it offers a great variety of smaller destinations to choose from, each with its own character, charm, setting, and of course key activities. These can range from the hippie chic surfer scene in Tarifa and the remote charm of Bolonia to the lowrise beach resorts of Sancti Petri, the authentic fisherman’s ambience of Zahara de los Atunes, and the Andalusian seaside vibe of Conil de la Frontera. ›

BEACH, SURFERS, NUDISTS AND NATURE
Yes, there is something for everyone along this coastline, whose first clearly defined destination is also its most famous. Tarifa is little more than an hour’s drive from Marbella, set amid hills topped with pine groves and giant wind turbines, with rolling pastures dotted with rocks and the characteristic brown-toned cattle of the region. These relaxed cows also venture onto the beaches, but not so much in Tarifa, where they’ve been crowded out by keen tourists from across Spain and Europe.
The old town of Tarifa is charming, historic, and densely packed with Andalusian-Moorish history. Its little labyrinth of cobbled streets lined with classic white-washed and stone buildings occasionally pass under arches or the gateway of town walls that still stand after a thousand years. Tarifa has that sleepy feeling of an Andalusian fishing village that you will come across along much of this coast; lively in the mornings, dead calm in the midday summer heat, and pretty vibrant at night, when locals and visitors mix and match in the town’s cafés,
restaurants, and bars.
The other Tarifa spreads out westwards along the coast, passing campsites, boutique hotels, and the hippie chic venues that have become synonymous with all things Tarifa. By the time you come to Valdevaqueros, a huge expanse of sandy beach and dunes, you’re in official kite-surfer territory, where aficionados can be anything from a beach bum or professional surfer to a millionaire. Unlike Marbella, it’s hard to tell which is which here, and they like it like that down Tarifa way.
VENTURE BEYOND
Those who venture beyond the more familiar confines of Tarifa will see signs enticing you to veer off the main route to coastal coves and the sandy surroundings of Bolonia, a tiny settlement of disperse houses famous for its seafood restaurants, chiringuitos, and the unforgettable setting of idyllic beaches enriched with Roman ruins. The Romans were here, and before them the Phoenicians, ancestors of the true Lebanese. They came to these shores for a variety of reasons but the most enticing was no doubt the tuna catch, for these waters contain some of the best quality tuna in the world. ›

The Almadraba technique of fishing tuna introduced by said Phoenicians over two thousand years ago is still practised, though one wonders for how much longer, as in recent years the Japanese experts that buy tuna at auction for top restaurants in Tokyo and elsewhere in their homeland have started teaching locals how to despatch the animals in a more humane and effective way, as well as how to cut and prepare the meat. This new ‘revolution’ has given rise to a budding gourmet scene in and around the famous tuna towns of Zahara (de los Atunes) and Barbate, where restaurants and festivals dedicated to the venerable delicacy have gained international renown and following. ›

Just inland from here is one of the prettiest little towns in all of Andalucía. Vejer de la Frontera is a classic white village, but one with the ocean in its sights from atop its hill setting. Walking its cobbled streets you occasionally catch the salty sea air wafting in, for this is a ‘mountain’ village close to endless beaches. Until fairly recently, local
women wore veils in the Arabic style, a Muslim relic in a Catholic town, a fact that is celebrated in much of the local artwork and souvenirs. Vejer offers stunning views, quaint beauty, and also local gastronomy in which the marbled, almost Wagyu style beef dishes made from the local cattle variety feature prominently.
REAL HIPPIES AND ‘CARIBBEAN’ COVES
Venture further yet and you come to what is perhaps the most iconic part of the Costa de la Luz, where tiny resorts such as Caños de Meca not only give off a real hippie vibe but the laid-back setting is also home to excellent cuisine, and great natural beauty with coves and sandy beaches
Bolonia, Roman ruins on the beach
often dedicated to nudism. It is a relaxed, easy-going setting a world removed from Marbella, where Cabo de Trafalgar – scene of the famous naval battle – eventually gives way to a long beach that leads directly to another intrinsically Andalusian coastal fishing and tourist town – Conil de la Frontera. ›
By the time you reach the city of Cádiz and skirt its bay to other classic port towns such as Puerto de Santa María and Sanlúcar de Barrameda you’ve left the best-known part of the Costa de la Luz behind. What remains lies beyond the world of marshes, sand dunes, and pine groves that is the national
park of Doñana, on the other side of which is a long coastline of endless beaches, shallow lagoons hiding from the ocean behind long sand bars, and a series of small, quaint yet highly appealing coastal villages and resorts.
El Rompido, not too far from the Portuguese border, is one of the
most famous of these, where people come to feast on seafood, nature, a relaxed atmosphere, open beaches, and sun under fresh sea breezes – in other words, all the ingredients that make the Costa de la Luz the perfect summer escape destination. e

The infinity pool features beach access, while the Spa & Fitness Centre overlooks the sea, offering guests a wide range of facials and body treatments. Guests can also spend time relaxing and detoxing in the indoor pool, saunas, or steam rooms. Those wishing to hone their cardiovascular fitness, meanwhile, can head to a secluded indoor pool, which is
ideal for performing a few laps.
The hotel’s design and architecture, which pay homage to Andalusia’s Arabian heritage, were created by the Goddard Littlefair studio. The wide horseshoe arches, local stone masonry, and ornate Zellige tiles honour regional craftsmanship, while delicate jali windows and lanterns lend a touch of Moorish charm
to the interiors. The hotel’s carefully curated colour palette is inspired by the surrounding land and landscape. Warm terracotta tones, soft ochres, and sage greens embody the designers’ creative vision. Courtyards and outdoor spaces come alive with flowing water and lush gardens, accompanied by a citrus scent that evokes the traditional Andalusian riad. ›

THE PIONEERS OF OCEAN REGENERATION
UNDERWATER GARDENS INTERNATIONAL
Humans’ connection to the ocean is as ancient as humanity itself. Covering over 70 per cent of our planet’s surface, we rely on oceans to sustain life, for energy, beauty, and leisure. When we think of vacations, we picture pristine beaches. When we imagine a perfect sunset, it often falls behind an aquamarine sea. Oceans are priceless and yet we’ve treated them as if they were disposable.
WORDS NATALIE LEHMANN PHOTOGRAPHY UGI & SHUTTERSTOCK
Overfishing, mass tourism, fossil fuel extraction, seabed mining, plastic contamination – the list of human-induced damage goes on. As climate change accelerates, rising temperatures and sea levels threaten not only marine biodiversity but also the stability of coastal communities. Yet just as humans are capable of inflicting harm, they are also capable of repairing it. That impetus is at the heart of Underwater Gardens International (UGI) – a
trailblazing organisation at the forefront of ocean regeneration.
Founded by Marc García in 2016 in Barcelona, Spain, UGI is dedicated to restoring marine biodiversity, raising environmental awareness, and creating innovative solutions for ecological renewal. Through cuttingedge research and global collaborations, they are combating climate change and revitalising ocean ecosystems – one reef at a time.
As the organisation puts it, “the ocean, together with its coastal zones, plays a
central and positive role in human life.” UGI’s primary focus is reef restoration, one of the most effective natural tools for capturing carbon dioxide and buffering climate impacts. In the past 200 years, oceans have absorbed 25 per cent of human-made carbon emissions, resulting in acidification, warming waters, and the collapse of marine ecosystems that feed billions and regulate global weather. Reef systems not only restore biodiversity but also help protect coastlines from erosion and flooding, both immediate threats of climate change. ›
At the center of UGI’s work are their Sea Gardens, dynamic underwater ecosystems built on Smart Enhanced Reefs (SERs). These intelligent bioremediation structures are designed to respond to the specific needs of different marine environments, providing stable foundations for coral and marine life to thrive. The reefs are adapted with natural supplements and growth conditions to foster long-term health and resilience.
UGI’s smart reef systems have already been deployed in Norway, Denmark, and in Spanish waters, with each project adapted to local ecosystems and
executed in partnership with other sustainability-driven organisations. These structures are closely monitored for environmental impact, ensuring that growth and regeneration continue even in the face of ongoing climate threats.
A cornerstone of UGI’s mission is education and awareness. Their state-of-theart research and educational park in Tenerife, on the Canary Islands, brings together laboratories, sustainable tourism, and ocean literacy. Visitors can engage with gamified learning experiences, view research in action, and see how regenerative marine science translates into real-
world impact. This modern, oceanfront facility helps fund UGI’s ongoing work, creating a circular model in which education, tourism, and conservation support one another.
UGI’s mission statement is simple: restoration, conservation, and regeneration of marine ecosystems to combat global climate change. Their smart reefs and research initiatives are already transforming vulnerable marine areas, but their efforts extend beyond ecosystem restoration – they aim to shift our relationship with nature toward one of respect, care, and coexistence. ›
VISITESSENTIALMAGA
Recognised globally as a leader in sustainable marine innovation, UGI continues to expand its influence. Most recently, the organisation was commissioned to collaborate with the Olympic Port of Barcelona to create carbon sinks and help restore the balance of the water column. They’ve also joined forces with Louis Vuitton’s 37th America’s Cup and World Sailing, using the international
platform to raise awareness about ocean conservation and the degradation of marine habitats. One striking initiative includes reimagining the America’s Cup trophy as a 3D Smart Enhanced Reef structure, combining art, sport, and raising environmental awareness in one grand reef.
Underwater Gardens International reminds us that regeneration is possible and necessary.
Their work proves that innovation, education, and ecological responsibility can go hand in hand. As we look to the future of our oceans, UGI offers a blueprint for hope, healing, and harmonious coexistence.

THE RISE OF REFORMER
PILATES
SLOWFASTMOVEMENT, RESULTS
In a world captivated by high-intensity workouts, why are fitness lovers trading burpees and barbells for slow, controlled movements on a sleek machine? Reformer Pilates – once the best-kept secret of dancers and elite athletes – has gone mainstream. And Marbella is taking note, quickly becoming a hotspot for this body-sculpting practice. Trendy studios are popping up across the city, attracting an international crowd. With its blend of mindful movement, alignment, and core strength, Reformer Pilates is gaining serious traction in the global wellness scene.
FROM BATTLEFIELD TO BOUTIQUE – THE JOURNEY OF PILATES
Pilates began with Joseph Hubertus Pilates (1883–1967), a German physical trainer, inventor, and visionary who deeply believed in the unity of mind and body. As a child, he battled several health conditions that inspired his lifelong pursuit of physical health. Introduced to gymnastics, bodybuilding, and martial arts by his father at an early age, Joseph developed remarkable strength in his teenage years. He concluded that many modern health issues stemmed from poor posture and shallow, ineffective breathing habits.
In 1912, he moved to
England to work as a selfdefense instructor for detectives at Scotland Yard. During his internment, Joseph observed how weak areas of the body caused other parts to overcompensate. This led him to develop a program focused on controlled, precise movements – known as ‘Contrology.’ His true breakthrough came during World War I, when, while working with injured soldiers, he adapted his system by rigging springs to hospital beds, enabling bedridden patients to exercise against resistance. This was an invention that influenced the development of the reformer and laid the groundwork for what would become modern Pilates.
After emigrating to New York in 1926, Joseph met Clara, his future wife and lifelong teaching partner. The couple opened their studio in Manhattan, attracting an elite clientele from the city’s dance and performing arts communities. Their unique method quickly drew attention, establishing the studio as a leading centre for physical rehabilitation and athletic training. Joseph Pilates left behind not only a global movement but also 26 patented devices and two foundational books. Today, over 12 million people worldwide practice Pilates, many drawn to the balance it brings between sculpting and strengthening. ›
WHY REFORMER PILATES IS TRENDING NOW
The current rise of Reformer Pilates can be attributed to several key factors. Newage wellness seekers are looking for low-impact forms of exercise that still deliver visible, lasting results. By blending resistance training, flexibility work, and core stabilisation, Reformer Pilates satisfies this demand with elegance. Unlike high-impact training, reformer Pilates provides a joint-friendly alternative for strength gain. Another reason for Reformer Pilates’ popularity is its adaptability, making it suitable for a wide range of bodies and needs. It is as beneficial for new mothers and elderly clients as it is
for athletes recovering from injury or looking to improve performance. The adjustable resistance levels and varied exercises allow instructors to customise sessions for the client’s specific needs. This inclusivity means that people of all fitness levels feel welcome, supported, and appropriately challenged. Celebrity culture and social media have added rocket fuel to the trend. From Hailey Bieber and Meghan Markle to viral TikTok videos showcasing stylish workout looks, the practice thrives on visual appeal and celebrity endorsement. Pilates is a highly aesthetic form of exercise, inspiring brands to launch curated collections and product lines tailored for those embracing the trend.
This fusion of fitness and fashion has turned Pilates into a full-fledged lifestyle movement.
MARBELLA’S PILATES SCENE
Post-pandemic, studios increasingly offer holistic group experiences, like sound baths, breathwork sessions, and nutrition seminars. The communal aspect of wellness has become a crucial element in why Pilates studios are thriving, especially in a city like Marbella, where the social scene is deeply intertwined with health culture.
Walk into Nordic Balance Studios, located in Centro Plaza, and you’ll instantly feel the union of minimalist design and expert instruction. The studio boasts refined lighting, polished wood floors, and sleek reformers arranged in a spacious, calming room. Among the Reformer Pilates classes, the studio hosts seasonal retreats and wellness talks, inviting guests to deepen their practice beyond physical exercise.
“In 10 sessions you’ll feel the difference, in 20 you’ll see the difference, and in 30 you’ll have a whole new body.”
YOURS Marbella has two locations and four studios, offering over 100+ workouts each week. The studio is filled with natural light and features interiors inspired by the Japandi style. Beyond Reformer Pilates, YOURS offers a variety of complementary classes, including Y-50 Strength and Endurance, infrared sessions like Hot Flow, a run club, and yoga classes. (https://yours.space/)
Both studios boast multilingual teams who can guide clients in English, Spanish, Swedish, or Russian. This multicultural fluency creates an inclusive space for Marbella’s international crowd and reinforces the city’s status as a global wellness destination. Looking ahead, the reformer trend in Marbella shows no signs of slowing. Studios are expanding their offerings, and some are adding wellness cafes and retail spaces, creating hubs where health-conscious clients can spend entire mornings immersed in self-care. ›
THE PROVEN HEALTH BENEFITS OF PILATES
In Joseph Pilates’ own words: “Pilates develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind, and elevates the spirit.” Pilates is an extremely safe and effective exercise, designed to restore optimal alignment in the body. These
are some of the benefits practitioners notice:
» Muscle imbalances responsible for poor posture will be corrected. Poor posture has been linked to many health issues such as back problems, joint degeneration, headaches, digestive disorders, and injuries in general.
» You become more body-aware and better coordinated.
» You’ll notice your body becoming leaner and more toned.
» The space between your vertebrae will increase, which will minimise pressure on discs and nerves.
» You’ll build core and back strength to support your
spine and improve pelvic floor health.
» You will learn how to breathe correctly and efficiently so that plenty of oxygen reaches every part of your body, especially the spine. Breathing relieves stress and can reduce high blood pressure as well as increase energy.
When practised consistently, most people begin to notice changes within a few weeks, often around the 10-session mark. As Joseph Pilates famously said, “In 10 sessions you’ll feel the difference, in 20 you’ll see the difference, and in 30 you’ll have a whole new body.” ›
PILATES VS YOGA
Many people wonder if Pilates is replacing yoga, but it’s important to understand the difference. While yoga focuses on flexibility, mindfulness, and spiritual growth, Pilates centres on strength, posture, and muscle control – especially targeting the core. Pilates instructors are specially trained in anatomy, injury prevention, and movement mechanics. Unlike many yoga styles, Reformer Pilates often uses resistance and mechanical assistance, allowing for precise muscle engagement, correcting imbalances, and improving functional fitness.
FROM FIRST CLASS TO LASTING CHANGE
While most forms of exercise require a baseline level of fitness, Pilates meets you where you are. The hardest part of the exercise is often mental. A high level of focus, precision, and body control are essential to perform the exercise correctly. It can take time to learn how to properly activate the core or implement lateral breathing, which is a specific breathing technique used in Pilates. Taking a few sessions with a certified instructor is highly recommended to learn proper technique and body mechanics. This
mental discipline, combined with the physical practice, fosters a greater mind-body connection.
Ultimately, the rise of Reformer Pilates in Marbella is about more than fitness. It reflects a profound shift in how we choose to move. It becomes a lifestyle choice, a refuge from the hectic pace of modern life, and an invitation to rediscover joy in movement. Whether your goal is rehabilitation, performance enhancement, or simply a healthier lifestyle, stepping onto the reformer might be the beginning of a transformative journey. e
MIRADOR DEL CARMEN ESTEPONA’S CULTURAL ICON
CULTURAL CENTRE
A tall, shimmering white tower, described as a ‘cultural lighthouse’, the Mirador del Carmen Cultural Centre stands proudly overlooking the beach, the promenade and marina of Estepona. It is the jewel in the crown of the town’s attractions.
Much more than just an impressive landmark, in this eyecatching structure we find an innovative and thriving creative hub. Offering high calibre exhibitions of contemporary art, the innovative Library of
Contemporary Cultures set over eight floors, a music conservatory and concert hall, this vibrant venue bustles with life with myriad events, literary festivals, talks , and the everyday magic of streams of visitors enjoying this bright and beautiful space.
The seeds of the idea of creating this magnificent and
ambitious cultural project in this area of the town, the barrio del Carmen, originally the humble fisherman’s quarters, were planted many years ago. It forms part of Estepona’s ‘grand plan’ implemented over the past 12 years that has consolidated the town as one of Spain’s leading tourist destinations. ›
The building itself is the brainchild of architect Salvador Moreno Peralta. The commission was awarded to him through a public competition. A distinguished Málaga-born architect and winner of a national urban planning award, Moreno’s brief was to create, ‘ an emblematic cultural, social, and touristic space. ’
A NEW LANDMARK
Following an investment of 15 million euros, Moreno’s masterpiece, the Mirador del Carmen Cultural Centre opened its doors in 2023. The immediate success of an exhibition of works from Madrid’s Thyssen Museum attracting 30,000 visitors, along with further well-attended exhibitions from the Mapfre and Zuloaga collections, clearly demonstrated the public’s desire for a place in which to appreciate quality culture. This is when the idea of adding a dynamic library bubbled to the surface. Under the direction of Alejandro Simón Partal, one of Spain’s most respected young authors, a poet and
university professor, wellknown in Spanish and international literary circles, he has been pivotal to the Library of Contemporary Cultures. Born in Estepona, and with a consolidated literary career, his link to his birthplace and his devotion to knowledge led to his collaboration with Estepona Mayor, José María García Urbano to create a cultural space that is unique in Andalucía. ›
A TOWERING EXAMPLE
Thanks to Alejandro’s creative direction, the enormous dedication of the team and the full support of the Town Hall, the Library of Contemporary Cultures was inaugurated on 21st November 2024.
The spacious, ultra-modern building encompasses a full complement of cultural disciplines, Art, Music, and Literature. Similar in size and stature to well-known cultural venues in Málaga city, the Mirador del Carmen Cultural Centre runs a tightship with a team of just ten experts in their respective fields managing the centre’s
quarterly programmes of events.
Coordinating with respected curators of art for the quarterly exhibitions from esteemed national and international collections, and a wide range of literary figures, the Mirador is a centre for excellence.
Taking the steps up to the main entrance from the beach and promenade, the diaphanous lobby is flooded with natural light.
Thanks to the genius idea of the architect to cover this south-facing building in a white sheath that filters out the harshest sun, the entire tower is bathed in a soft white light throughout the long hours of daylight.
The design of the building lends itself to a journey of discovery. Visitors can start their tour of the centre on the ground floor browsing the spacious exhibition halls designed in interesting, asymmetric shapes which result in large open plan galleries overlooked by a walkway, allowing appreciation of the art on display from different perspectives.
A LIBRARY WITH A DIFFERENCE
Bibliophiles, or lovers of books, will be delighted by the resplendent
Biblioteca de Culturas Contemporáneas, the Library of Contemporary Cultures, which has opened up new avenues allowing the public to enjoy reading as a social activity in an
environment of peace, learning , and inspiration.
Devised as an innovative, ‘lateral thinking’ library, focused on the future, and accessible to all, it has been extremely well received by a diverse public; children, students, creative professionals seeking inspiration; book lovers of all ages.
From simply enjoying the pleasure of reading a book, doing homework, preparing a doctoral thesis, taking part in the lectures and talks, author book readings, or joining a reading group, the library goers themselves help to create momentum by getting involved in the activities. ›
The centre has been designed ingeniously with open plan stairs and walkways between each of the eight attractive floors of the Library, with the option of a lift, drawing you onwards and upwards to discover the Library’s delights. Far away from the old image
of a library with shelves full of dusty old tomes and a code of stony silence, a sign on the wall declares that this library is a place ‘not to stay silent, but not to make noise,’ in keeping with the innovative, colourful interior design which invites curiosity, learning, creativity, and collaboration.
Each level evokes a mood. On the first floor, in the children’s reading area, kids can curl up with a book in a fun, honeycomb shaped nook, stimulating their imaginations to come alive when immersed in a good story.
The ‘future room’ for young 14-18 year olds includes a study area where teenagers can carry out homework and assignments in a bright, bookfilled environment, built for purpose.
One level includes an impressive floor-to-ceiling bookshelf five metres high, while original seating areas give readers private or communal spaces in which to enjoy their books.
There’s an area designed for workshops, another for film screenings, and where better for co-working than in this inspiring space… Alongside the myriad bookshelves, original pieces of art adorn the walls.
Communicators can make use of the podcast and radio studio to record their scripts. Views from every floor of the building of the waves crashing on the Mediterranean shoreline just metres away, add to the library’s unique appeal. ›

LIVING THE GRAND PLAN
The first six months of the library’s life have been exciting and gratifying for the team. As José María Guerrero, Cultural Advisor enthuses, “Every day we are at the service of the people using the library’s facilities, and they make it the place to be…
The highlight has to be FLEST - the annual Literary Festival; the second edition took place in June featuring visiting poets and novelists, readings, talks, concerts,
and film screenings; it was a great success.
We’re fulfilling Alejandro Simón’s vision of making the Library of Contemporary Cultures one of the five most acclaimed libraries in Spain.
Importantly, we have a carefully curated collection of books offering the best in contemporary literature –influenced ‘democratically’ by the library users themselves.”
The careful design and functionality of the Cultural Centre make this a very
attractive space for events, along with the light and the inspiring location. The complete programme of events and activities give the Mirador del Carmen a mark of distinction.
Could the popularity of the Library of Contemporary Cultures indicate that society is tiring of screens? José María Guerrero comments, “Books never went away; however, in the last decade book sales in Spain have soared by 30 per cent.
People have rediscovered a passion for books, especially young adults, who are reading more than ever. The digital gadgets of the technological revolution are tools for the reader, but they don’t take the place of physical books.”
Completing the trio of Art, Literature, and Music, the stunning auditorium, set within the Conservatorio de Música, is designed with one wall entirely of glass, framing the stage with the breathtaking backdrop of the gardens, beach, and sea beyond – an idyllic setting for musical and theatrical performances.
Crowning the tower is a privately run, rooftop restaurant and sky bar, Cielo, where ‘culture vultures’ can round off an afternoon of browsing art and books by riding up to the rooftop restaurant in the outdoor elevator, and taking in a gourmet experience along with the breathtaking sea views across to Gibraltar and the African coastline.

ALFA ROMEO 33 STRADALE
A modern masterpiece with timeless DNA – Alfa makes the design comeback of a generation.
WORDS SAM HEXTER PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF ALFA ROMEO
There’s design, and then there’s the almighty art. In architecting the new Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale, Alfa’s Centro Stile has delivered a masterpiece that speaks to both. César Barreau, under Alejandro Mesonero-Romanos, channels the purity of Franco Scaglione’s 1967 sculpture with contemporary flair. Sleek butterfly doors, a sinuous silhouette, and that signature Scudetto shield marry elegantly with modern aerodynamics. At just over a metre tall, it wraps you in form-
follows-function heaven — doors that swing skyward, glass that flows seamlessly into the roofline, and elegant rear intakes that are poised for performance, even while parked.
Alfa’s gone bold. A 3.0-litre twinturbo V6, borrowing Maserati’s ‘Nettuno’ lineage, sits mid-ship, delivering a soul-stirring 620 bhp at 7,500 rpm and 730 Nm of torque between 3,000–5,500 rpm. Mated to an 8-speed ZF twin-clutch gearbox and limited-slip differential, much of the drivetrain comes lifted straight from Maserati’s rather brilliant MC20. And it sings — gloriously. ›
Originally, Alfa announced the 33 Stradale with the option of an all-electric variant. But when it came time for buyers to place their orders, the vote was unanimous: every single one of the 33 hand-built cars was specified with the internal combustion V6. And can you blame them? With zero demand for the EV, Alfa quietly shelved the electric drivetrain
altogether — proving that for a car this beautiful, this emotive, buyers wanted nothing less than fire and fury from a petrol-powered motor.
More than just a pretty face, the 33 Stradale hides race-bred hardware beneath its carbon-fibre monocoque. Aluminium subframes and chassis engineering from Dallara support the structure. Up
front, double-wishbone geometry with a virtualkingpin layout keeps things poised; at the rear, double trailing-arm suspension delivers Michelin-devouring stability. Bilstein dampers and Brembo anchors signal its track-readiness, with 380 mm discs up front and 350 mm inboard at the rear. Ceramic options are available, should you want even more stopping power.
VISITESSENTIALMAGA
Alfa quotes 0–100 km/h in around 3.0 seconds, though independent testers suggest it may edge just under that in the right conditions.
Top speed? A staggering 333 km/h. So yes, it goes as well as it looks.
Even before delivery began in mid-2024, all
33 units were spoken for — a testament to this car’s mythic lineage and stirring presence. Interiors are fully bespoke: owners choose between ‘Tributo’, featuring a mix of leather and aluminium, or ‘Alfa Corse’, boasting carbon fibre and Alcantara. As
for the price? Official figures start around €1.9 million before local taxes, with customisation likely pushing final totals north of €2 million. Secondary market estimates already sit between €2.2 and €2.5 million, depending on spec and provenance. ›
This is no Ferrari or Porsche in loose production. It’s a genuine one-percustomer sculpture — a vanishing handful destined for concours lawns and climate-controlled vaults. Coachbuilt by Touring Superleggera in Milan, Alfa’s chosen ‘fuoriserie’ approach is a spiritual continuation of the 1967 Tipo 33 Stradale, of which only 18 exist today. It`s not just rare. It’s ultra unobtanium. Alfa has no plans to revisit the idea with different trims or higher production runs. One car, one
opportunity, and it’s gone.
The 33 Stradale takes aim at rarified offerings from Ferrari, McLaren, and Aston Martin, but it does so from a higher plane of exclusivity.
Think McLaren Elva, Ferrari Monza SP2, or Aston Martin Valkyrie — machines where specs matter less than storytelling and collectability. It doesn’t try to outgun rivals on brute force or lap times. Instead, it delivers beauty, balance, and a spine-tingling soundtrack from its twin-turbo engine.
What truly sets it apart is its lineage and its limited run: 33 units, ghost weight, coach-built elegance. No factory contention, no cookie-cutter launch edition. Just pure, bespoke craftsmanship.
It’s not just about spec sheets or launch figures;
it’s the emotional pull. The wail of the V6. The butterfly doors catching golden hour light. The look, the feel, the artistry. The 33 Stradale is everything supercars once were and should be. This is Alfa’s love letter to internal combustion. The
embodiment of la dolce vita in carbon fibre.
In a world rushing toward mass-produced electric hyperperformance, the 33 Stradale stands defiantly apart. Few will drive it. Fewer still will own it. But all will cherish it. e

DESIGN YOUR TRAVEL WITH
LUNAJETS
If you fly Business or First Class but are tired of congested airports and crowded aeroplanes, LunaJets opens up a whole new world of travel experiences.
A luxurious Dassault Aviation jet
A perfect initiative for romantic occasions
LunaJets isn’t the only private jet charter company in the world, but the specialist firm founded by Eymeric Segard in Geneva in 2007 is one of the fastestgrowing businesses in this segment globally. The answer to why this is so might involve reference to a certain Carlsberg television ad, for LunaJets is building its rapid growth and success not just on quality of service and efficiency but also on a highly flexible model capable of adapting to the specific needs of private, corporate, and
institutional clients. It offers these services through the LunaJets, Luna Solutions, and Luna Group Charter divisions, which have operational hubs in Geneva, Zürich, Paris, Monaco, London, Riga, Dubai, and now also Madrid, where Managing Director Carlos Matallana is overseeing the fastest-growing region of all for the company. Fascinated by air travel from a young age, Carlos studied Aeronautical Management in Madrid before completing a Master ’s Degree in London. He began his very well-rounded career in mass aviation with Spanish airport agency AENA
at Lanzarote Airport before moving on to aviation related fields in Africa, the Middle East, and the Caribbean. ›
Managing Director for Spain, Carlos Matallana is overseeing expansive growth
“I returned to Spain in 2018 as International Sales Manager for United Airlines, the world’s largest airline,” says Carlos, “but really found my calling when I joined LunaJets in 2023. You might say that I have gained experience in all facets of aviation in order to have the right know-how to deploy in luxury air travel, and this is quite frankly the most creative and rewarding position I have had to date.” Clearly passionate about both aviation and LunaJets, Carlos Matallana has overseen significant expansion within the regional market in what is a very short time, and besides hard work and a global network he puts it down to the sheer quality of the offering.
WHAT TRAVEL CAN BE LIKE
“When we say that we offer bespoke travel options to our clients that are far removed from the world of busy airports, queues, and crowded planes, we mean it. With us, you can join a routine flight – but a small, luxurious one that goes straight to the private jet terminal – or actually design your flight. Yes, there are more options available than you could have imagined, and we are
The ideal form of business travel – work while you fly
masters at getting it all ready in time for your flight and delivering an experience to remember, regardless of whether it is a travel destination, romantic occasion, corporate flight, or even emergency or diplomatic solutions that we provide for government institutions and NGOs.”
We may be able to create travel experiences to our taste and preferences, but imagine going a step further and designing your mode to travel to suit
your exact wants and needs Quite apart from luxurious, efficient, and elegant air travel away from busy terminals, this is an experience to savour in which you will be able to adjust the route or create your own destination, select the aeroplane of your choice, and even design the menu, bar offering, music, air freshener, and should you wish to also, the type of crockery, cutlery, and linen used.
Romantic couples or keen travellers can ask to fly over specific landmarks, corporate groups can have access to planes with offices and meeting rooms, not to mention your branding in the interior – or even on the jet’s fuselage!
Add to that, amenities such as television rooms, beds, and showers as well as a broad range of onboard and off-board entertainment, themes and events, and it becomes clear that what LunaJets offers is travel in the form of a unique experience. Indeed, every flight can be a bespoke moment to be savoured or used for utmost impact and
efficiency, you choose. “It is a world removed from what most of us have come to expect from air travel, but while it may sound like the kind of thing that is reserved for tycoons, the options are highly varied and can be surprisingly cost-effective for groups,” says Carlos.
This is because not only is the range of options very broad, there are also many different planes and itineraries to choose from.
“If you take a larger plane such as a Boeing Business Jet or an Airbus Corporate Jet and add all manner of personalised details the cost will rise, but it is also possible to follow a fixed
route that we operate and use a smaller plane. You will enjoy all the comfort, space, service, and convenience that comes with private air travel, which also includes the associated executive airport terminals. It’s very feasible compared with Business and First Class, just so much more relaxed, elegant and time-saving, also because we can touch down at smaller private airports much closer to where you need to be.” Welcome to travel as it can be.
If you’re a fan of Quentin Tarantino, you may wonder why he hasn’t made a film since Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, the work the director deems his very best. The answer is that he’s simply in no rush. He has become disillusioned with the industry’s “diminished returns” and jaded with the short windows that films have in theatres. He recently told Variety, “What the **** is a movie now? What – something that plays in theatres for a token release for four ****ing weeks? Alright, and
by the second week you can watch it on television,” he said. Few can deny that Tarantino was right when he lamented that streaming platforms have vastly impacted the movie industry. Matt Damon recently stated that it is very hard to make a great film like Good Will Hunting these days, because people simply aren’t going to the movies anymore, and that means you either bet on a blockbuster superhero film or risk going broke.
Today, Quentin Tarantino sees live theatre as “the final frontier.” He told
The Independent that, notwithstanding the success of Netflix, directors could only fully capture their audience’s attention in movie theatres.
Theatregoers, after all, pay premium prices to see a live performance and are fully present while it takes place. That is why he is currently writing a play, which, he says, he may or may not one day turn into a film.
There’s a second reason why you likely won’t see a Tarantino film soon. He is waiting for a special event to restart his plans for The Movie Critic, a project he says will be his last cinematic release. He told film critic Elvis Mitchell he felt zero pressure to finish the film fast. He has two children: a fiveyear-old son and a two-year-old daughter, and he is waiting until his son is “at least six” to continue filming. That way, he hopes, his son will remember his film. His daughter, he says, “is already a genius,” and he knows she’ll understand the project anyway. ›
Tarantino is heavily engrossed in his life as a father and husband. He now lives in Israel alongside his wife (singer Daniella Pick) and their children. They met in 2009, while Tarantino was filming Inglourious Basterds, and married in a Jewish ceremony nine years later. In 2019, the couple moved into a palatial home in Tel Aviv. The initial plan, says Tarantino, was to split their time between Tel Aviv and Los Angeles, but the pandemic changed all that, and the couple decided to make Tel Aviv their permanent home.
The Israeli press frequently spots Tarantino walking through the city and reports his attendance at toddler
parties and children’s play dates, yet fans are hoping that the filmmaking bug bites him once again. The director, after all, has been obsessed with his profession for decades and is one of the most successful self-taught directors of modern times, alongside Christopher Nolan, Akira Kurosawa, and Steven Spielberg. His life story is fascinating and a testimony to the value of having and pursuing one’s passion.
HUMBLE BEGINNINGS
Tarantino began writing screenplays as a teenager, penning one called Captain Peachfuzz and the Anchovy Bandit, which was based on the 1977 hit film Smokey and the
Bandit. Arguably, the best move he made was working at Video Archives – an iconic video store in Manhattan Beach, California. There, he established a reputation in the community for his profound knowledge of films, so discerning clients turned to him for specific recommendations. He was often asked if he had studied filmmaking. He stated, “When people ask me if I went to film school, I tell them, ‘No, I went to films.’” Tarantino was a prolific writer, penning scripts that he would later use in his career. He also studied acting at the James Best Theatre Company, where he met several talented people with whom he would later collaborate in his career.
Reservoir Dogs
In 1987, he co-wrote and directed a film called My Best Friend’s Birthday, which was never completed. However, much of the film’s dialogue was included in the film True Romance (starring Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette). He also landed a few acting jobs, which helped him survive before he became a full-time filmmaker.
RESERVOIR DOGS: TARANTINO’S BREAKTHROUGH FILM
Tarantino’s big break resulted from a chance meeting with producer Lawrence Bender at a mutual friend’s barbecue. Tarantino spoke to Bender about his idea for a heist film, and Bender encouraged him to put the idea down on paper. Three and a half weeks later, the script was completed. The duo obtained funding; however, what sealed the
film’s fate in the best possible way was the involvement of A-list actor Harvey Keitel, who read the script and became determined to be part of the project. Keitel contributed his own money to the project and agreed to take on the lead role. The film screened at the Sundance Film Festival in 1992 to worldwide acclaim. Tarantino then sold the scripts for True Romance (directed by Tony Scott) and Natural Born Killers (directed by Oliver Stone).
The epic success of Reservoir Dogs led to offers from Major Studios. Tarantino was offered Speed and Men in Black, but he declined, working instead on the script for one of his most revered films: Pulp Fiction , which he also directed and acted in. His decision was wise; the film earned him an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay and received a slew of nominations, including one for Best Director. It also took home the Palme d’Or at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival. Pulp Fiction was a groundbreaking film. Dark, funny, fast-paced, and edgy, it was a total contrast to positively tinged movies released the same year, such as The Shawshank Redemption and Forrest Gump
One of Pulp Fiction ’s most groundbreaking features is its narrative structure. The director rejected conventional, linear storytelling in favour of a fragmented timeline that continually jumps back and forth. Thus, the audience is spared from the pain of the death of one of the film’s most beloved characters, Vincent Vega, because he appears onscreen after his death. Another novelty was the division of the movie into self-contained chapters, each of which formed part of a larger puzzle. For instance, the opening diner robbery scene is far more impactful when we revisit it at the end, with the audience having a new understanding of Jules’ (Samuel L. Jackson’s) spiritual transformation. ›
The film additionally broke new ground by prioritising dialogue over action. Some of its most memorable scenes feature Vincent and Jules discussing mundane topics, such as hamburgers and foot massages. Its apparent innocuousness contrasts starkly with shocking moments, such as when Vincent accidentally shoots Marvin in a car.
Tarantino’s unique storytelling has shaped many directors, including Christopher Nolan and Alejandro González Iñárritu. Pulp Fiction revealed the immense power of storytelling, blending a myriad of genres, including dark comedy, action, and romance. Despite sometimes being extremely violent, his characters were also lovable and memorable. Vincent,
Jules, Mia Wallace (mobster Marcellus Wallace’s wife), and Butch Coolidge (played by Bruce Willis) are morally flawed but also captivating, funny, and likeable. Each one of them is also worthy of redemption.
Pulp Fiction also showed Tarantino’s incredible eye for detail. The film captivated audiences with iconic images and examples of exquisite graphic design. ›

The Big Kahuna burger and the packet of Red Apple cigarettes (featuring a smoking worm peeking out of a red apple) were designed by talented Los Angeles graphic designer Chris Cullen. Some of these designs were also used in subsequent films. For instance, Red Apple cigarettes can be found in Kill Bill (Volume 1), Inglorious Basterds, and Django Unchained. Cullen’s work also featured in Jackie Brown › The following two decades saw Tarantino direct big box office hits like the revenge film Kill Bill, which lasted four hours, leading the director to divide it into Kill Bill Volume
1 (2003) and Volume 2 (2004). In 2009, he released Inglorious Basterds, the story of a fictional group of American guerrilla soldiers in Nazi-occupied France. The film once again made a killing at the box office and earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Director and a win for Best Original Screenplay. In 2011, Tarantino began working on Django Unchained, a film that has connected profoundly with millennial and Gen-Z moviegoers. It was a Spaghetti Western set in the antebellum Deep South, during the era of slavery. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio
and Jamie Foxx, it became his highest-grossing film, and it continues to be the most lucrative Western ever released. The film garnered the director his second Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. His next film, which he began filming in the summer of 2018, is, arguably, his magnum opus: Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, a fictional rewriting of the Charles Manson murders that took place in California in the summer of 1969. Starring Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio, it grossed an impressive $371M at the global box office on its opening weekend. The movie
also featured a talented cast of relatively unknown actors who are now some of Hollywood’s most sought-after stars, thanks in no small part to this film. The list includes Margaret Qualley (The Substance), Sydney Sweeney (Euphoria) and this year’s Best Actress winner at the Oscars, Mikey Madison (Anora). The criticallyacclaimed film received a whopping 10 Oscar nominations, including
Best Director and Best Picture. Recently, Howard Stern asked him to identify his best film. He answered, “For years, people used to ask me stuff like that, and I would say something like, ‘Oh, they’re all my children’. I really do think Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is my best movie.”
Quentin Tarantino believes that the current movie scene is among the worst in film history, alongside the 1950s and
1980s. However, fans are waiting with bated breath for next year, when his son turns six. We want to see Tarantino doing what he feels he does best: write screenplays and direct films. Yet precisely what makes him so great is his unpredictability and commitment to doing what he loves. Many would say he has given us enough. I say when it comes to Tarantino, the best is yet to come! e

MANUEL BELTRÁN
When it comes to hiring top models for everything from catwalk shows to editorials, the Manuel Beltrán Modelling Agency has always stood out from the rest. This Málaga-based agency has provided models for the Coast’s biggest fashion events, one of the most important of which is the Elección de la Reina y Míster Feria de Málaga (the selection of the Queen and ‘Mister’ of the Málaga Fair), which will take place on August 19 at the stunningly lit entrance to the Real de la Feria de Málaga.
“We have had the honour of running this competition for 27 straight years, pausing only during the peak pandemic years. It is headed by a different leadership team every four years, so it’s wonderful to have been selected by all of them for over a quarter of a century.”
This agency was founded 30 years ago by Manuel Beltrán, a former fashion model and photographer. “I started modelling at 16,” he tells me, adding, “Very early on in my career, I met Pilar Cervantes (the sister of Miss Spain 1986 and Best Model of Europe 1998, Remedios Cervantes). She recognised my strength in people skills and recommended that I launch my own agency. I took her advice,
and what began as a small venture is now not only a modelling agency but also a modelling, make-up, and fashion design school. We realise that it is vital for models to know how to apply their own make-up, style their hair, and know how to dress.”
Manuel has single-handedly discovered two of the biggest names in fashion and beauty. One of these is Elisabeth Reyes, the last Miss Málaga to take home the title of Miss Spain (2006). Manuel says, “I spotted Elisabeth while she was walking through a mall. She was only 12 years old, but she was already over 1.7 metres (5’6) tall. Now she stands at 1.8 metres (5’11). I gave her my card and spoke with her parents at length soon after. It is essential to build a good relationship with the parents of young models. They need to support their child’s dream, sign contracts on their behalf, and see the value of travel for their kids.”
Another sensational find was Juan García, whom he chanced upon while the blonde, blue-eyed boy was walking along the busy city streets, eating a palmera de chocolate (chocolate pastry). Manuel recalls that Juan had an interest in making it big from the start and was keen to hone the skills necessary to succeed in high-level competitions, such as Mr. Spain and Mr. World. ›

MODELLING AGENCY TURNS 30
“When Juan started, he was enthusiastic to present himself to Mr. World, but he was a little young, and I suggested that he wait a bit.” This advice paid off; Juan won Mister Málaga in 2005, Mister Spain in 2006, and Mister World in 2007. He is the only Spanish model to have earned this prestigious title, and he has since appeared in numerous editorials, on catwalks, and at events. Today, over 20 years after their paths crossed, Juan and Manuel remain good friends, reminiscing about their beginnings in the fashion and beauty world. They also remember the hard work involved.
As Manuel states, “To rise in the beauty world and navigate your career effectively, you need to do more than look good. You also need to have presence, know how to manage the money you earn, schedule your bookings, and learn how to present yourself well. My agency teaches models the complete set of skills they need to succeed in this competitive profession.
As a top agent, Manuel’s job is also to match models with the right clients. There are also, he notes, trends that favour one type of model over another. “Paris is the Mecca of fashion, for instance, while Milan is the nucleus of male fashion. As a representative, I have to select the type of models I believe will be a hit in the country where the client is located. Cultural values also influence the type of work that different models seek.
Models from the Coast, for instance, tend to struggle when they have to work in cities that are far from the sea.” It’s also important, says Manuel, for models to be aware that modelling is hard work, especially when you’re just starting. “I know many international models who started out moving from hostel to hostel. It makes sense… even David Bisbal spent year after year travelling in a van, singing at weddings and other events, before becoming an international sensation.” To be truly successful in fashion, he notes, models have to have an interest in travel. “They often start in their teens, and it is a huge transition, for instance, from a small pueblo to a busy runway in New York.”
On the day of our meeting, Manuel is, as usual, busy organising a host of events, including catwalks and competitions. In July, he celebrated one of the biggest fashion events on the Coast: the Benalmádena de Moda event, which was attended by designers
of the calibre of Petro Valverde. The summer will also see Manuel put his organisational and artistic talents to good use at events like the Rincón de la Victoria Pasarela Flamenca Bezmiliana and the Pasarela Femape Flamenca, in collaboration with the Diputación de Málaga and Málaga de Moda.
For the upcoming Selection of the Queen and Mister of the Málaga Fair, he has a few ideas in mind, but says he isn’t worried about deciding the theme just yet. “Every year, the choreography for this event comes to me in a dream… Last year, I dreamed that there would be a DJ spinning live music at a disco-style event. That dream became a reality, and I staged the event as an Ibiza-inspired party.” Manuel, ever the entrepreneur, creative, and visionary, knows that his spark comes from somewhere deep within… and it is when he is asleep that the inner child within him comes out to play!

The young girl born as Claudia Teruel in Málaga has evolved into a multifaceted singer who covers genres from classical and soul to pop and house with apparent ease and to great effect – sometimes even moving from one to the other within her shows. Working solo, in a duo with a pianist, in a quartet, or as part of a band, KLAUDYA offers a great many different musical experiences to audiences in varied settings. Officially a lyrical light soprano, she discovered a vocal range in herself that makes it possible to also excel in genres such as soul, pop, and house. “In having come from the classical field and broken into others, I am known as a cross-over singer,” says KLAUDYA, who wins crowds over with her looks and warm personality as well as her artistic ability.
MUSICAL EXPERIENCES WITH KLAUDYA
With her beautiful voice and wide vocal range, KLAUDYA is a rising young local talent who is taking Marbella’s top venues by storm.
Yet it wasn’t always so. Though she discovered a love for music at an early age, KLAUDYA was originally a musician, not a singer. “For a good deal of my youth, I played the oboe and simply sang along to the music I enjoyed until a colleague of my music teacher heard me and enthused about the register of my voice. He told me that I had a great natural talent and convinced me to take singing lessons with him, so before I knew it I was following intense instruction both for singing and the oboe after school.”
KLAUDYA formed part of
her local cofradía (parish brotherhood) band for over ten years, playing various instruments including clarinet and oboe before singing became her main passion. “It was then that I realised I wanted to make a career of it and joined the Conservatorio Profesional de Música ‘Manuel Carra.” This was followed by further studies in Galicia and Marseille, before she moved to Geneva to attend the Haute École de Musique de Géneve. It may sound like a straightforward decision but young KLAUDYA had to pass a rigorous selection process before she was
offered one of just ten places available at the conservatory. “There I studied under the baritone Gilles Cachemaille and the soprano Maria Diaconu, and later had the opportunity to perform with top singers and directors such as Artur Stefanowicz, Alain Garichot, Gabriel Garrido and Leonardo García Alarcón.”
KLAUDYA also underwent advanced classes in Modena under Mirella Freni. A promising career within the Central European heartland of classical music beckoned, but in 2016 personal issues forced her to return to Málaga. ›
WORDS MICHEL CRUZ PHOTOGRAPHY KEVIN HORN
MUSICAL EXPERIENCES
“I continued to develop my skills and set up a business focusing on lyrical music, in particular on opera, Baroque music and Zarzuelas, the Spanish genre of opera.” She found it hard to break through the established ranks so put her energy into other projects, and while these proved to be popular KLAUDYA decided to take time out from music and spent several years working in the hotel and restaurant industry. It was while doing this that she realised the coastal area offers the greatest prospects for a musical career in this region. “I was introduced into the world of quality musical entertainment and began to perform at dinner shows in luxury restaurants and hotels, at private functions and weddings, and this has continued to grow to the point where it is now an important part of my career and has allowed me to reconnect with my first passion, music”
In the process, KLAUDYA has had to diversify her shows to include soul, pop, and
romantic music as well as the Opera Experience, and in some shows actually flows from one to the other. “I have found that my voice suits all these different forms of singing, so I have the ability to adapt to the setting, the event, or even the mood on the night, and this has proved to be a great plus,” says KLAUDYA, who performs solo or with musicians. “I’m now working in beautiful spots on the coast, Friday evenings at La Fonda in the old town of Marbella, Saturdays at Fat Mama in Nueva Andalucía, and Sundays at the Kempinski, in addition to private events and weddings, and I find the variety very rewarding.”
The audiences do too, as KLAUDYA has fast become a favourite regardless of whether she is bringing opera to the people or performing romantic, blues or popular songs. “People love beautiful songs well performed but it is so gratifying to see the reactions to classical works that are full of passion and storytelling. You can just see the emotions come up even in those who never
really focused on classical music, and I love the idea that maybe I’m opening up new perspectives to explore and enjoy. In my view music, like so many other gorgeous forms of expression, is a pleasant experience that should be enjoyed regardless of what label or genre it falls under.”
Besides performing, Claudia, who uses KLAUDYA as her stage name, also passes on her knowledge and provides voice coaching as well as working on her personal project, Eclectica, an album that allows the wide range of her voice to be heard through different types of music and in so doing blends lyrical sounds of many different origins and eras. “In music, time and place have no importance, only beauty.”

Ridley Scott serves as an executive producer on the series, but his days of directing Alien projects are over. As he told ScreenRant, “Where it’s going now, I think I’ve done enough, and I just hope it goes further.”

ROLLER BLINDS CURTAINS
AI
MARISA CUTILLAS
Every day, we seem to be edging closer to a world in which we interact closely with robots. Statistics indicate that around 90 per cent of large organisations will be adopting some form of intelligent automation system this year, combining AI and robotic process automation (RPA) technologies. Those that are doing so are making significant cost and time savings. Integrating AI with RPA allows them to achieve up to 70 per cent reductions in processing times for routine tasks. As espoused by A3 Logics, the zeitgeist isn’t just about automation, but rather about smarter automation that can handle variables and exceptions.
AGENTIC AI
Mainly used in the finance sector, agentic AI comprises AI systems that autonomously understand a goal, then plan, execute, and adapt it as required. A sample scenario is where a client calls their bank
with a complex problem, such as a fraudulent transaction combined with an incorrect bill. An AI agent, rather than a chatbot following a script, autonomously analyses the client’s account history, runs transaction data through fraud detection systems, and starts a chargeback process with the credit card department. It can also e-mail the client, explaining all the steps taken, and schedule a follow-up call. If the type of fraud used is unfamiliar, the system can automatically update its knowledge base and recommend new fraud detection rules to a human team.
INTELLIGENT SUPPLY CHAIN OPTIMISATION
For manufacturing firms, AI and automation can help reduce the impact of disruptions in raw material supply. For instance, if a geopolitical event were to impact production in factories in a country like Spain, AI systems would immediately detect the disruption. It would then assess alternative
suppliers, recalculate optimal production schedules for different manufacturers, suggest new contract terms to management, reroute logistics, and simulate the financial impact of different solutions. These systems would also adapt new information that arises (such as a supplier offering interesting new alternatives), so companies could optimise the cost and speed of production.
AUTOMATED INVOICE-TOPAYMENT PROCESSES
Those who work in large multinational corporations can receive thousands of invoices daily from numerous suppliers in different formats, including PDFs and emails. Using a hyperautomation platform, these companies could automatically extract invoice data from PDFs and emails using AI-powered OCR. The system would then match each invoice to a purchase order, check for discrepancies, inform teams of exceptions, and initiate payment, all without human involvement. ›

PERSONALISED MARKETING
Imagine being part of a marketing team in a large company, where your job involves creating personalised emails with unique subject lines, body content, and product recommendations for thousands or even millions of customers. Doing so would be humanly impossible, unless you had the help of automated marketing platforms like Salesforce Marketing Cloud, ActiveCampaign, or HubSpot. These platforms automatically collect information on customers, including their browsing history, demographics, and purchasing patterns, and segment them based on this data. They automatically trigger e-mails to be sent based on specific rules (for example, ‘send the e-mail 24 hours after the client browses a specific
category’.
Generative AI can also be used to automatically create a subject line, body, and product selection for each customer. The entire process is part of an automated customer journey. For instance, if a customer views a product category several times, it can trigger an e-mail recommending similar products with AI-generated descriptions. Alternatively, if a new product is released that is similar to one a customer has bought, the platform can automatically send them news about the product.
EDGE AI FOR REAL-TIME AUTOMATION
Edge AI is the deployment of AI algorithms and machine learning models directly into ‘edge devices’. The latter are physically located at or near the source where data is generated,
so that instead of sending raw data to a cloud server for processing, AI analysis happens on the device itself. Examples of edge devices are smartphones, wearable fitness trackers, and autonomous vehicles. As an example, in a car manufacturing plant, high-resolution cameras on an assembly line are being fitted with AI chips, which instantly analyse images of car parts for defects such as scratches in paint or missing hardware. The AI makes realtime decisions, like triggering a robotic arm to remove a faulty part or alerting a human technician on the spot.
We’ve mentioned just a few ways in which AI and automation are revolutionising everything from marketing to vehicle manufacturing, and we’ve just skimmed the surface. Stay tuned for more new AI developments as they arise! e

NOT A KITCHEN, AN ATTITUDE
BULTHAUP

Bulthaup is not a kitchen, it is a conviction, an attitude towards and for life...
WORDS MICHEL CRUZ PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF BULTHAUP
BULTHAUP MARBELLA
Bulthaup has been present in Marbella since 2004, headed by Fran Perez and Nacho Porras, who together with their experienced and enthusiastic team have been designing and installing gorgeous kitchens in beautiful homes across the region, ranging from country homes to ultramodern penthouses and architectural villas. “We will always find the style and configuration not just to fit the home but also to be a perfect match for your style, way of
life, and your unique ‘attitude’”, says Nacho. “To maintain an edge, we stay abreast of trends and ahead of the curve both from a technical and a design point of view, with a very personalised approach to creating bespoke kitchens made just for you.”
AN EVOLVING ROLE
If you look at how today’s kitchens have evolved from the original modern design concepts it is clear just how far they have come. However, this has not been an abstract
process that developed in isolation; kitchens have moved with the times and become a reflection of the changes in our way of life. “The earliest modern designs were entirely focused upon efficiency, they were the enthusiastic product of a new technological era that produced such modern innovations as washing machines, electric stoves and ovens, as well as dishwashers, washing machines, toasters, kettles, and later also blenders and extractors,” says Bulthaup’s CEO, Marc Eckert. ›
Your choice of quality materials
The finest carpentry
“The design of those early modern kitchens focused on the integration of all those new tools but it was also a reflection of the times, in which the workspaces stood in a row facing the wall and housewives were often alone at home preparing meals for their husbands and children. Although the designs and range of appliances continued to develop, this configuration remained pretty much untouched until the 1980s, when we
were among the earliest producers to start breaking the mould and designing open-plan kitchens.” Much of the concepts that flowed from this were initially inspired by professional restaurant kitchens, which are configured for optimal efficiency and communication among the team.
As a result, today’s kitchens are more open plan in nature, designed to flow into connected living and
dining rooms, and are more communicative, with few worktops set against walls and the majority focused upon an island that has since become the living hub of the kitchen. Most appliances and storage spaces remain set against walls but the focal point of cooking is now the island, which faces back to the living and dining room to bring out the best in an openplan space and facilitate communication. ›
The modern kitchen concept is flexible to your needs and preferences
A modern open-plan kitchen design integrated into the living spaces
THE KITCHEN AS THE HEART OF THE HOME Islands often also have a double function as a bar, complete with stools. “It’s a place that emphasises the social role of the kitchen, a place where you can draw up a stool and share a glass of wine and a chat with the person who is preparing a snack or meal,” says Marc Eckert. “This is the essence of a kitchen and apart from the practical function of storing foodstuffs and preparing meals it’s the main function of the modern kitchen – to be the beating heart of the home that draws people in and creates a warm, cosy, and sociable atmosphere. In this sense we have of course gone ‘back to the future’ because the island is of course a modern version of the old-fashioned kitchen table at which people did much of the preparation for cooking while interacting with friends and family.”
Bulthaup’s CEO, Marc Eckert
The modern heart of a home
As much as top brands such as Bulthaup stand for beautifully styled designs whose avantgarde pioneering role has garnered a long list of international awards, the CEO does lament the fact that for many the modern kitchen has become above all a visual showpiece meant to impress. “That is not the true role of a kitchen; modern or otherwise. In Asia people have ‘dry kitchens’ for showing off and so-called ‘wet kitchens’ where the real cooking is done. The first one is luxurious and spotless, almost never touched so just for show, and the real kitchen is often not much more than a dark room tucked away in a corner of the home. This is something we would like to avoid happening in Europe, as it is not our traditional way and takes away so much of what a kitchen can contribute to your home and way of life.” ›
Tactile and functional perfection
AN APPROACH TO LIFE
Large villas tend to have a similar configuration of elaborately styled beautiful kitchens with breakfast and lounging areas complemented by a rather more industrially functional working kitchen adjacent to it that serves as a workspace
capable of producing a professional catering output. The difference is that Bulthaup designs such stateof-the-art kitchen solutions to be functional, attractive as well as a welcoming part of the home. In other words, the main kitchen integrated into the home also fulfils the
task of providing a social hub for family and friends, a space to start the day at breakfast, gather for a coffee, work from, prepare the day’s meals, and end with a snack and a glass of wine shared around the island bar. ›
Natural materials, beautifully crafted
Kitchen spaces that merge into your living spaces
“This is our concept of kitchens for modern living,” says Marc Eckert. “Naturally they have to feature cutting-edge technology and engineering with the finest, most convenient appliances, look amazing, and add to the aesthetics and value of your property, as well as be fully capable in terms of storage, cooking, and catering on scale if needed. However, within all of this the kitchen that will make you the happiest is an expression of your (life)style, an attitude to living. It can and should be the most creative part of a home, where beautiful meals and special moments are created. Yes, a kitchen can and should be so much more than a showpiece – it should an expression of your attitude to life – a place as unique as you!”

ALMOST THREE QUARTERS OF SPANISH OFFICE
WORKERS EXPERIENCE PAIN DUE TO POOR
WORKSTATION SETUP, SURVEY REVEALS
Fellowes Spain research highlights workspace ergonomics crisis.
Fellowes Spain, a specialist in manufacturing ergonomic office equipment, has released concerning findings from their online survey of over 1,000 Spanish office workers, revealing failings in workspace ergonomics and employee wellbeing.
With the online survey findings showing that 37% of Spanish office workers took 11 days off on average last year due to workstation related pain or discomfort, Spanish businesses face a significant financial impact as a result.
According to the survey, almost one in three Spanish office workers believe their employers are getting the basics right when it comes to desk work and employee health. Worryingly, 55% of Spanish employees said their workplace only conducted workstation risk assessments occasionally or had neglected to carry out one for a long time. And more than a tenth of survey respondents reported that their workplace
has never carried out a workstation risk assessment.
Héctor Barak, General Manager at Fellowes Spain, expressed serious concerns about these survey results: “These statistics are deeply troubling. Spanish businesses have a duty of care towards their employees’ wellbeing and must provide workstation risk assessments to ensure their workforces are comfortable and properly supported at their desks.”
The survey reveals a disturbing trend in workplace related discomfort, with 74% of office workers reporting to be suffering from workstation-related pain.
Diving deeper into the type of pain experienced, 55% of respondents shared that they have developed back pain due to their workstation setup. To help reduce back pain while sitting at their workstation in the office, 41% of respondents believe additional back support would be beneficial.
The research also uncovered that office workers personal lives are being impacted by their workstation related pain, with a third of
respondents sharing that their mood is affected, and they feel less enjoyable to be around. Almost a quarter require regular pain relief medication to cope. Findings indicate that office workers aged 18 - 44 years old are more likely to take time off compared with their older colleagues, due to pain caused by their workstations. When hybrid office workers work from home, some don’t work at a desk, the survey highlighted. In fact, 21% work from any available surface and 10% work anywhere around the house with a laptop on their lap. Back pain was reported to be just as big an issue for those working from home as it is when based in the office, with 54% of respondents sharing that this is their biggest source of discomfort or physical pain, due to their work set-up.
“These are shocking figures that need to be brought to the attention of Spanish business owners and HR departments,” said Héctor Barak. “This issue must be addressed now to help reduce workstation related discomfort and pain. ›I
In turn, this will help businesses to reduce employee absence rates while boosting morale and productivity across their workforces.”
Only 22% of survey respondents believe their employers are investing in the right ergonomic equipment to support employee health. Office workers shared that they noticed a positive difference when given the right ergonomic equipment, with over half stating that they felt more comfortable and 29% indicating that they felt more productive and healthier.
Héctor Barak emphasised the importance of providing adequate workstation equipment: “By carrying out thorough workstation risk assessments, Spanish businesses can gain insights into the exact equipment each employee requires to feel supported at their desk, allowing them to be as comfortable and productive as possible while they work.”
Fellowes Spain continues to champion workplace wellbeing through its range of ergonomic solutions designed to support healthier working environments. e

YEARS taking care of
STARTING YOUR FIRST AQUARIUM ON THE COAST
Tropical fish, with their vivid hues and graceful movement through the water, are often described as works of living art. In an age
in which mindfulness is touted as a panacea for stress, aquariums serve as a tool that can be harnessed to keep the mind in the present, free from regrets about the past or worries about the future. If you’ve never
cared for fish before, then you may not know how to set up a safe, long-lasting ecosystem for your fish. Below are a few tips that will help you feel more confident about providing fish with an ecosystem where they can thrive.
WORDS MARISA CUTILLAS
WHERE TO ACQUIRE YOUR AQUATIC OASIS
The first step to take if you’re interested in buying fish is to visit a shop with staff who are knowledgeable about the needs of the species you are interested in.
One shop you may wish to check out is Acuario Tropical, located on Avda. Arias de Velasco in Marbella (www.acuario-tropical.edan.io/).
It specialises in fish and has a wide range of tanks, filters, and accessories. Another specialised store is Acuario Málaga (www. acuariomalaga.com), which also features a diverse array of fish species, aquariums, and furniture.
My Fishroom (www.myfishroom. es) is an online shop offering a wide range of aquariums, equipment, food, plants, and related products.
Coral Reef Málaga (www.coralreefmalaga.es) features a comprehensive selection of livestock, tanks, accessories, and more. There are also general pet stores that stock aquarium-related items, including Kiwoko in Fuengirola (www.kiwoko. com).
SUITABLE FISH FOR A HOME AQUARIUM
When you visit a pet store, you will notice a host of stunning, irridescent fish. If you are a beginner, it pays to choose species that are hardy and require minimal maintenance. You will also need to consider which fish can be paired; some fish (for instance, male betta fish) need to be alone, while others (such as the swordtail, molly, or zebra danio fish) thrive in numbers. Neon tetras, for instance, should form part of a group of six or more.
TANK SIZES
Fish have specific tank size needs, so you will also need to consult with an expert to ensure your fish has enough water and space to grow to a ripe old age. For instance, you will need to provide around 38 litres of water for every six guppies, while a single angelfish will need between 75 and 110 litres. A small group of swordtail fish, meanwhile, will need around 75 litres. Read up on species you are interested in, check out online forums like Reddit, and above all, speak to specialists in aquatic species. The shape of the tank is also essential; many fish prefer a horizontal swimming space, meaning they are more suited to a rectangular rather than a square-shaped tank..›
Most fish will need a tank with a filter that removes harmful waste and physically traps debris like uneaten food, plant matter, and fish waste. These filters create surface agitation, which increases oxygen levels in the water. Filters offer numerous benefits, including supporting healthy bacterial colonies, reducing stress and disease, and simplifying tank maintenance. Finally, you will need to change the water in your tank frequently. For most home aquariums, it is sufficient to change about 25 per cent of the water every one or two weeks, but the needs of your fish may vary, so make sure to consult with experts.
Changing water helps keep nitrate and waste levels low, ensuring your fish stay healthy
WATER PARAMETERS
Note that each species also has specific water parameters that align with the waters it hails from. For instance, neon tetras originate from the soft, slightly acidic waters of the Amazon River Basin, and their ideal pH range is between 4.0 and 7.5. Water hardness is also key. Neon tetras tolerate water with a hardness of 1 to 12 degrees of general hardness (dGH). Temperature needs also vary. To continue with the example of the neon tetra, water needs to be between
20 to 26ºC.
PLANT CHOICES
When setting up an aquarium, you may also need to invest in live plants. Many species enjoy seeking cover beneath leaves. Getting the balance right is vital, as you want to ensure fish have enough plants to hide beneath and swim through without overcrowding your tank. Just a few beginnerfriendly aquarium plants to inquire about are java ferns, anubias, and Amazon swords. Go for plants that are easy to maintain, and once again, let research and expert opinion be your guide to ensure you fulfil all your fish’s needs. e

MODERN ANDALUCÍA IN SOTOGRANDE GRANADA 16
Granada 16 is the kind of property that is hard to come by – a rare blend of modern style, comfort, and amenities coupled with timeless Andalusian charm and authenticity.
People demand modern comfort, technology, and refinement from quality homes these days, yet the contemporary villas that are most highly prized and sought after are often renovated, not built from scratch. This may seem like a contradiction, but it’s really quite logical. Firstly, older properties generally occupy the best locations, be it frontline beach, golf, or overlooking a yacht marina, which are very hard to replicate in newer settings. Secondly, the tasteful and detailed rebuilding of a quality property and its transformation into a home fit for year-round comfort in a prime setting is the finest example of added value – especially if its finest features and character have been retained and brought to life in modern form.
Modern and classic come together in Granada 16
This is the kind of thing that Sotogrande Life Experience excels in. The Sotograndebased developer dedicates itself to creating beautiful homes and living experiences, and this involves not only sourcing and/or building or transforming gorgeous Sotogrande homes, but also helping to give substance to a preferred way of life through a broad range of lifestyle services. “If you love Sotogrande, the setting and the quality of life it offers, we
will bring your vision to life and help you make the most of this beautiful destination,” says Thomas Rodriguez, Associate at Sotogrande Life Experience and responsible for the renovation of Granada 16.
SOPHISTICATION AND STYLE IN SOTOGRANDE ALTO
From within the villa and the grounds of Granada 16 the outlook is over the sweeping green hills of Sotogrande,
past golf courses to the yacht marina below, and of course the cobalt blue of the Mediterranean. Minutes away from all the amenities and services available within this exclusive country club environment including the nearby 5-star SO/Sotogrande Hotel, only half an hour west of Marbella this part of Sotogrande is private, select, and surrounded by some of the most famous golf courses in Europe, including the Real Club Valderrama.
VISITESSENTIALMAGA
The six-bedroom villa measuring over 1,200m2 of total built area, including 250m2 of panoramic terraces on a 3,580m2 plot covered in lush landscaped greenery lists a great many amenities and luxuries that mark it as a refined villa in the upper segment of the market. ›
Flowing open-plan interior with panoramic views
The home incorporates immaculate lawns, a beautiful infinity edge swimming pool beset by a choice of elegant terraces, and of course a spacious home featuring the final word in modern style, comfort, and build quality. Added to this are tastefully decorated living spaces, a formal dining room, television and entertainment room, a private office, large modern kitchen, and breakfast room, an imposing entrance hall, and an equally impressive spiral stairway connecting three spacious floors containing living, private, and entertainment quarters. “We envisioned a modern, sophisticated living approach, with high quality yet functional furniture designed to create a cosy, welcoming space for family and friends. From introducing fresh wooden flooring throughout to adding wallpapers and carefully curated details – every element has been considered so that families can simply walk in and start living. Even the bed linens are in place,” says Thomas.
RARE QUALITIES
The blend of style and amenities of Granada 16 stands out even in a market known for luxury homes, thanks in part to exquisitely styled and furnished interiors featuring the finest stone, marble, wood, and other noble materials applied with care and taste. The rooms flow seamlessly yet offer welcoming spaces that seem perfectly proportioned. This is also true of the impressive master suite, whose panoramic views compete for your attention with such features as a modern marble fireplace, and a dressing room and bathroom designed with
attention to detail. Quality of style and execution are also visible in the lower level, which is dedicated to entertainment and wellbeing. It contains a professional gymnasium and yoga area complete with a refreshment bar, a sauna, hammam, and a pool house with bathroom. But Granada 16 is so much more than the sum of its elements – what makes it stand out is not so much what it features but how it is put together, and here the combination of interior design talent by Ambience Home Design, fine carpentry in floors, ceilings, and wooden panels, as well as quality engineering,
finishing, and superb furnishings by esteemed designers such as Porada, Flos, and MisuraEmme. From the welcoming refinement of all three levels within the villa to its outdoor lounging, dining, and sunbathing spaces, this is a property that captures the heart as well as the eye, for it provides the perfect canvas for a life lived in the very finest Sotogrande style.

GERANIUM
A DINING HAVEN IN FULL BLOOM
Picture this: A cosy dining venue with modern fittings and a covered terrace. Well-dressed knowledgeable staff who extend a warm welcome. Divine dishes that simply caresses your palate with enticing flavours. This is Geranium in La Cala de Mijas, masterminded by celebrity TV chef and author Steven Saunders, who is admirably assisted by Head Chef Maurice Curtin, and by well-known retired restaurateur and self confessed foodie Garry Waite.
WORDS JAMES SINCLAIR PHOTOGRAPHY KEVIN HORN
The restaurant is located on Mare Nostrum within easy walking distance of La Cala de Mijas and, just like its previous incarnations – The Pink Geranium in Cambridgeshire and The Little Geranium in La Cala – it has achieved astounding success, with a large contingent of regular diners. To find out why
this is so, read on.
Geranium offers exemplary tasting menus comprising multiple courses that can be paired with wines according to preference, amounting to a very reasonably priced Michelin-type dining experience. The plates are effectively gourmet tapas, with artistic presentation and an impressive attention to detail. A visit here invites you to settle in with friends or family for an
occasion to savour.
Steven’s Pink Geranium became a landmark in the UK, welcoming guests like Prince Charles and Princess Diana, Margaret Thatcher, Pierce Brosnan, and Rod Stewart among others. He operated a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow service and, this summer, they have a VIP service available with a chauffeur-driven Bentley. ›
SUPREME VERSATILITY
Some of the original dishes, like the Famous Crispy Duck Salad, which was Princess Diana’s favourite, are still on the menu today. Along with an À La Carte menu for those who would rather have fewer courses and larger portions, there are three tasting menus, priced at €69, €79, and a VIP Summer Signature Tasting at €99 with six, seven, and eight dishes respectively, giving diners great flexibility in selecting to their desire. The latter, according to Steven, is “The Best eight dishes I have ever created”. Wine pairings with these, reflecting the quality of the vintages being served, are set at €35, €45, and €65, and whether you choose to have wine or not, the fare you will be served is well worth the outlay.
Our recent visit with a table of four saw us glorifying in a medley of delicious delicacies that included Lobster Salad, with avocado, mango, coconut, and lemon pearls, Beef Carpaccio with caper berries, truffle oil, and parmesan crisps, Kataifi Scallops, crispy fried with Thai relish, lemongrass foam, micro cilantro, and coriander oil, Wild Sea Bass with red chicory, pea and mint broth, Iberian ham, and lemon confit, and Steven’s Famous Beef Wellington with Rioja jus. All are impeccably presented, and contain many extra garnishings, such as wild strawberries, nasturtium leaves, and other tasty complements. Even the Home Baked Breads with sundried tomato, basil, and whipped feta are irresistible. ›
The extremely well-trained waiting staff are attentive, always on hand to take orders, help with selections, and present the dishes as they are served at each table. Steven and Garry are often front of house, regaling regulars, and enhancing the experience which is always an enjoyable one.
The restaurant also offers a Lunch Tapas Menu, a Fish Tasting Menu, a Veggie Menu, and a Kids Menu, as well as a Dessert Menu that includes specials like Chef Steven’s Crêpe Suzette à La Madre which is prepared tableside. Their Sunday lunches involving another menu are extremely popular so booking is essential.

DIEGO DEL RÍO
CELEBRATING THE FLAVOURS OF ANDALUSIAN CUISINE
WORDS
It is always a pleasure to interview Diego del Río, Executive Chef of Boho Club and one of the Coast’s bestknown and most highly praised chefs. Diego, who trained at Le Cordon Bleu, is known for having helmed many of the Coast’s best restaurants, garnering and maintaining a Michelin star for El Lago throughout his tenure there. He is a familiar face at charity events such as ChefsforChildren, a charitable
initiative supporting children in need. This year, the Chef has joined some of the country’s most renowned chefs to help raise money and awareness for DiabetesCERO, which aims to find the cure for Type 1 diabetes. Arguably, of course, the chef is best known for his food, which is always fresh, delightful, and inspired by the produce and culinary traditions of Andalucía.
At Boho Club, he has found his perfect match.
Here, he is free to create dishes made with love, time, and local ingredients, while imbuing them with a touch of international charm (particularly East and Southeast Asian). Rushing isn’t in his vocabulary; every dish is painstakingly prepared, as his values align with the ‘slow food’ concept. Del Río is an avid traveller, and he has gathered the very best of a myriad of cultural traditions to add a modern twist to Andalusian classics. ›
MARISA CUTILLAS PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF BOHO CLUB
VISITESSENTIALMAGA
An excellent way to discover the Chef’s immense talent and creativity is by trying the new summer menu at Boho Club. “My inspiration this year was freshness… Some dishes on the menu have an acidic, spicy touch, as these are the flavours my clients demand,” he tells me. In recent months, Del Río gave lucky diners the opportunity to sample a selection of prospective dishes for the upcoming summer season, asking their opinions and taking note of their culinary preferences. The result is a menu that is bound to hit the spot, one that is authentically tried and tested.
The Chef has graciously shared the names of a few dishes that are proving to be a big hit with both regular and
new clients this season. One of these is the Amberjack Usuzukuri, featuring fine slices of amberjack fish with a jalapeño gazpacho, baby cucumber, fresh coriander, and crispy masago (smelt roe). The dish is a fusion of two famed traditions. “Gazpacho is, of course, traditionally Andalusian, but replacing tomato with jalapeño gives the dish a lively Mexican kick,” he explains.
One dish he added to the menu “owing to popular demand” is the Red Tuna Sashimi, featuring Almadraba tuna, yellow tuna ceviche, crispy curry leaves, and ikura (salmon roe). Diners are also raving about the Oysters, served with kalamansi ponzu and Thai mignonette.
Kalamansi is, of course, a famed citric fruit from Southeast Asia that is used to create a host of dishes and beverages. This tiny fruit bears a gentle, tart flavour that is not quite as sharp as lemon or lime. Yet another delectable dish is the Wok-Seared Monkfish, paired with gnocchi in a creamy beurre blanc and finished with drops of olorosocured egg yolk. “Cooking this fish in a wok lends it a unique flavour and texture; it’s one of our most popular dishes this summer.” The chef also tempts our taste buds with the Bilbaína-Style Turbot, featuring a turbot grilled over embers and served in its own juices, bound with a garlic-and-chilli Bilbaína emulsion for an authentic Basque touch. ›
There are also fantastic seasonal vegetable dishes to select from, as well as excellent meat creations, including the chef’s by-now iconic Málaga Suckling Goat, comprising a slowcooked suckling shoulder with Payoyo cheese cream and apricot purée infused with Jerez vinegar. “We also have lovely desserts to end an exquisite meal, such as a classic chocolate coulant, served with ‘double cream’ ice-cream.”
This unforgettable menu can be enjoyed until the end of October, after which the chef and his team will serve an exciting new menu for the cooler seasons. Diners can also opt for one of two tasting menus: the Menú Clásicos (featuring four savoury dishes and one dessert) or the Menú Diego del Río (featuring five savoury dishes and two
desserts). Both can be accompanied by a wine pairing if desired. There are a host of excellent wines and cocktails to explore at Bohis, Boho Club’s trendy new garden terrace bar.

The evening featured a spectacular ‘ronqueo’ (traditional dissection) of a Balfegó bluefin tuna weighing over 300 kg at the By the Sea Beach Club. This gastronomic ritual was performed live in front of guests and narrated by a specialised host. During the demonstration, guests learned about the different parts of the tuna and their best culinary applications. Afterwards, attendees enjoyed a cocktail-style tasting dinner by the sea, featuring exclusive creations specially designed for the occasion, along with a live flamenco performance.

ICONIC ITALIAN WINES
August on the Costa del Sol: Beach, sun, sand, lots of fun, and three Italian wines for having a great time.
WORDS AND PHOTOGRAPHY WILLIAM SEQUERA OF NEGRINI
Wine has historically been present in the courts of European royalty as a symbol of wealth, power, and status – at grand banquets, celebrations, or simply to satisfy the hedonism of nobles and sybaritic commoners. This still happens today, but wine has become more universal and is now enjoyed daily by new generations as a source of pleasure – paired with meals, romantic dinners, casual chats among friends, or simply to refresh oneself when it’s hot by the sea or pool.
We’re recommending three superb Italian wines – products of a country also known for its
fine gastronomy, excellent pasta, tomatoes, cheese, olive oil, and exquisite cured meats.
» BERLUCCHI ‘61 SATÈN
BRUT N.V.
A refreshing sparkling wine, pale yellow in colour, from northern Italy – specifically the Franciacorta PDO in Lombardy. Produced by the Berlucchi
winery, pioneers who created the first ‘Franciacorta’ wine, it’s made using the Traditional Method, known in Italy as ‘Classico’, with Chardonnay grapes from Brescia, facing Lake Iseo. This creamy wine, with very fine bubbles, offers intense flavour, minerality, and high acidity, with citrus and ripe yellow fruit aromas. ›
Aged 24 months on its lees and including 10 per cent reserve base wine aged in oak barrels, it has a medium body, balance, and a long finish. It’s an ideal summer sparkling wine – perfect for any occasion and a great match with appetisers, rice dishes, fish, seafood, oysters, and cured hams such as Parma and San Daniele.
» SAUVIGNON – CASTELLO
DI
BUTTRIO 2023
A refreshing white wine with an elegant, intense bouquet and straw-yellow colour, from the Friuli Colli Orientali PDO in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, northern Italy. Made by Castello di Buttrio, a boutique
winery located in a medieval castle and managed by Alessandra Felluga and her daughters, descendants of a renowned wine-producing family in Friuli. The Sauvignon Blanc grapes are planted in a unique Friulian soil called ‘Ponca’, which lends the wine its distinctive minerality and flavour. It has refreshing acidity, medium body, and rich aromas of citrus, passion fruit, pineapple, mango, yellow pepper, and sage. Floral notes add refinement, and the palate shows a certain fleshiness due to 6–8 months of lees ageing. Recommended with lobster, pasta alla Buzara, and salads with burrata.
» LA SCOLCA GAVI
DEI GAVI ETICHETTA
NERA 2023
A dry, refreshing white wine with a pale yellow hue, from the Gavi PDO in Piedmont. Produced by La Scolca, a symbol of refined Italian taste, who pioneered the ‘Gavi dei Gavi’ style. Made from Cortese grapes, it boasts intense flavour, pronounced minerality, and lively acidity. Enjoyable now, but with the potential to age well, it displays aromas of lime, lemon, almond, and walnut, with mineral hints of flint. With medium body and a
long finish, thanks to six months of lees refinement, it pairs perfectly with fish, crab, lobster, white meats, and light pork roasts. Due to its finesse, many wine lovers refer to it as the ‘Chablis of Piemonte’.
I encourage you to try any of these three exceptional Italian wines, imported and distributed in Spain by Negrini, and available in top restaurants, beach clubs, and wine shops on the Costa del Sol. I’m sure you’ll enjoy them.
