ARGENTINA LAND OF FIRE

From the northern jungle, along the foothills of the mighty Andes Mountains and the endless plains down to the icy ‘Land of Fire’, Argentina is a country of contradictions – many worlds in one, both in terms of its nature and its people. D

istant from the world’s northern epicentre, Argentina is a land we sometimes forget about, then rediscover and marvel at. It comes to us through bursts of passion, be it football, dance, or the economic and political upheavals that are also an integral part of its history, only to sink back into isolation. This is not how

life is experienced from within this fiery country, but how we tend to see it from afar, as something of a Spanish-Italian mix at the bottom part of South America. But Argentina is big, almost as big as India (more than five times the size of Spain), with almost half of its population living in the massive ‘Paris of the South’, Buenos Aires, followed by sparsely

populated endless expanses that reach to the very south, where the continent’s glaciers almost touch Antarctica. A country this large could never be uniform, and Argentina is the sum of distinct landscapes and cultural regions. To most who make the long journey here, touchdown is in its lively capital of over 15 million inhabitants.

Buenos Aires is the focal point of the nation, its fast-beating economic, cultural and political heart, and the place where the contrasts begin, including fierce rivalries between football clubs, social classes, and the political ideologies they represent.

The Porteños, as inhabitants of this huge agglomeration are known, reflect the predominantly Spanish-Italian ancestry and cultural influence on the capital through their speech, which is like Spanish spoken with the accent and sing-song melody of Italian. ›

Arabs, and Afro-Argentineans, followed by more recent migrants from countries such as Bolivia and Paraguay. But this is a country that is not so much divided along racialethnic as upon politicaleconomic lines, and this along with a poor distribution of wealth has contributed to a great deal of instability. Though Argentina is primarily Spanish-Italian in population and culture, this is a meltingpot of nationalities, with larger concentrations of indigenous Amerindian and mixed Mestizo people in the rural Chaco, Andes and Patagonian regions, where they contributed to the famous Gaucho cowboy culture. Buenos Aires itself was like the New York of

HUGE WEALTH AND POTENTIAL

With so much in the way of natural resources and human creativity, Argentina is a land of great wealth and a potential that it somehow fails to realise. But it wasn’t always so – for the first half of the 20th century this was one of the richest nations in the world, so what went wrong?

Los Glaciares National Park, Patagonia, Argentina

27 | NOVEMBER 2023 | MARBELLA, SPAIN

The southern part of the Americas was one of the last regions colonised by the Spanish. With its sparse population and lack of indigenous empires and obvious riches, it originally held little interest for them, in spite of the legend of silver mountains that led Genovese explorers in service to the Spanish crown to give Argentina its Italian-based name – Argentina, land of silver. For much of its history, this was largely an agricultural frontier land where a Spanish upper class suppressed the indigenous population, but then it all changed. ›

« BACK TO CONTENTS

The abundance of good agricultural land held the same promise to millions of European settlers that the USA did, and so millions of Spaniards, Italians but also others came, transforming this typical South American colony into the Mediterranean version of the United States. Buenos Aires grew into a huge port and industrial city, a replica of the USA but with the elegant avenues and cafés of Paris, and by the late 19th century Argentina was industrialising and had grown rich on agricultural exports. This expanded further during the 20th century, when grand new monuments, parks and palaces sprung up in the capital, including the widest avenue in the world, 9 de Julio. During World War Two, the country became the largest food exporter in the world, emerging into the 1950s with tremendous potential for the future.

And then it began to fall apart. Not unlike neighbours such as Brazil, a period of political instability reappeared that was reminiscent of the many civil wars and conflicts of the 19th century, and Argentina became a land of extremes. Far left fought with far right, the richer became richer and the poor poorer, the result of a closed social and economic system where prosperity was restricted, not earned, and the middle classes gradually began to disappear. Juan and Eva Peron were national heroes that divided opinion, as always, and by the 1970s even populist leaders of this kind gave way to a military dictatorship that began a period of suppression known as the ‘Dirty War’. ›

Tango embodies Argentine passion

Thousands were arrested, imprisoned or disappeared, a black period in the history of Argentina that culminated in the Falklands War of 1982. What was meant to alleviate political pressure at home ended in military defeat and the end of the dictatorship, as the junta leaders had not counted on Margaret Thatcher sending a task force to the other end of the world to recapture the distant British islands inhabited by 2,000 of its descendants. Since then, democracy has nominally returned to Argentina, but mired with corruption and continued political and economic instability in a country where periods of extreme growth and recession do nothing to alleviate a very poor distribution of wealth. Not surprisingly, the nation continues to be polarised in many ways, with Boca Juniors representing the socialist workers’ movement just as River Plate stands for the more conservative middle and upper classes.

A PASSIONATE PEOPLE

The two find themselves in the national football team, which has the unique ability to unite a nation passionate about the sport and always believing in glory. Where the 1978 world cup title of Mario Kempes and brothers might have felt somewhat forced, the glorious campaign of Maradona, Valdano and others during the 1986 world cup in Mexico

set the record entirely straight, even more so than last year’s title win led by Lionel Messi. In Argentina, however, football is a life and death matter but even so only one of many passions. In its harbour, sailors and immigrants brought the culture, food and music of especially the Mediterranean to these shores, giving birth to the iconically Argentinian tango, whose roots lay

in the harbours of Italy, Spain and southern France. They also brought mostly Italian pastas and desserts into the national diet, yet for much of Argentina’s culture one has to leave the capital and search in the vast interior. This is where its cattle and sheep rearing gaucho culture was born, and with it the meat barbecue cuisine that we know and love Argentina for. ›

The Hotel was initially designed as a Parador – a state-owned luxury hotel that is usually located in a converted historic building. However, it was soon re-envisioned as a hotel. It was built in 1963 under the guiding hand of brilliant architect, José Antonio Corrales, who bestowed it with innovative as well as traditional Andalusian touches, such as its stunning courtyard. GLOBAL FOOD AND DRINK TRENDS TO WATCH OUT FOR IN 2024 WORDS MARISA CUTILLAS

TRUST THE PROCESS

Mintel reports that consumers are demanding greater transparency and accountability from food and drink brands. They are interested in aspects such as production and processing since they are more aware of the potential risks of processed and ultraprocessed foods. They are additionally aware of the environmental impact of the food industry, and wish to support companies that align with their values.

How, then, can food and beverage businesses build trust and boost transparency? The answer is multifaceted but can include providing buyers with more detailed information about the ingredients used and processing techniques employed to make food. They can demonstrate their commitment to customers’ health by sourcing their ingredients from sustainable, ethical suppliers, demonstrating full transparency about their

42 | NOVEMBER 2023 | MARBELLA, SPAIN

environmental impact, and working with independent organisations to certify their products.

BEING HUMAN

The AI boom may be one of the defining phenomena of the current zeitgeist, but many people are already a little jaded by the ‘standardised’ effect it is having on their lives – and they are keen to acquire products that are humancentred. ›

»

If you’re into nutrition and you see food as fuel, then you’ll be pleased to know that the hottest trend in food next year will be health: harnessing the power of food to help you live a longer, healthier life – as found in Mintel’s Global Food and Drink Trends Survey – the defining report in the industry. The past few years have seen a major paradigm shift in the way human beings relate to food. It’s no longer just about flavour, texture, and novelty (though all these qualities continue to appeal) but also about approaching food from humanistic, customised, and scientific viewpoints. Below are the top trends that will be winning over consumers from across the globe very soon.

43 | NOVEMBER 2023 | MARBELLA, SPAIN

Brands will be offering services such as gourmet subscription services, diet-centred foods (including those approved for lowcarbohydrate, vegan, or Mediterranean regimens), and products made with locally sourced ingredients. Part of being human is being aware of the result of one’s actions on the environment and wildlife. As such, companies wishing to connect with eco-friendly customers can do so by manufacturing fair-trade, ethically sourced products, as well as those promoting social and environmental causes.

AGE REFRAMED

The stigmas surrounding older people have been completely debunked. Advances in medical healthcare, increased awareness of healthy lifestyle choices, and a growing desire to stay active in our senior years

mean we are living longer than ever, and food brands are waking up to the important role they can play in extending lifespans. Food and beverage companies can cater to mature customers in multiple ways. They can develop products that are high in protein and fibre to help maintain muscle mass and boost immunity and optimal mental health. Other items that will be embraced by older shoppers include foods that are friendly to the digestive system, fortified with vitamins and minerals, and catered to people with conditions such as heart disease and diabetes. They can additionally align with this group by providing foods that promote good sleep and good joint health, as well as those that provide fuel for fitness routines. One industry that is burgeoning is that of meal delivery services, which can prepare customised meals for seniors.

44 | NOVEMBER 2023 | MARBELLA, SPAIN

EATING, OPTIMISED

Busy lifestyles, rising food costs, and an increasing demand for convenience – coupled with an interest in healthy food – have given greater importance to technology as a means of optimising our eating behaviour. Mintel predicts that there will be a host of new technologies that will help us plan meals, shop for food and drink, and cook food more efficiently. Currently, top worldwide meal kit delivery services (think HelloFresh, Home Chef, Gobble, Purple Carrot, and CookUnity) are delivering kits containing

all the ingredients and recipes home customers need to prepare delicious home-cooked meals in a jiffy. Recipe kits are ideal for busy workers, as well as those with mobility issues. 2024 will also see the release of a host of apps that track consumers’ nutritional intake and the amount of food they waste. Top food brands, meanwhile, will be offering recipes and cooking tips online on their social media channels.

MORE THAN MONEY

Consumers will prioritise value over price, meaning

45 | NOVEMBER 2023 | MARBELLA, SPAIN

that they will be willing to pay more for items that foster their health and align with their values. This category overlaps with many others, as it essentially involves a demand for quality, sustainability, ethical practices, and fair-trade measures. Savvy brands can do much more than try to lower their carbon footprint. They can also offer items made with organic ingredients, work alongside local and regional suppliers, donate to charities and social causes, and partner with non-profit organisations. ›

RELATIONSHIP RENAISSANCE

Buyers are interested in making meaningful connections with others, and they are drawn to experiences that can provide them with a sense of community. Through their products and services, brands can empower customers to make new friendships and battle isolation – a factor that is vital in the age of remote work. Brands can tap into this trend in a myriad of entertaining, and engaging ways. They can host events and workshops where customers learn about food, create online communities, offer products and services that are meant to be shared with others (think a meal kit for a small dinner party), and partner with other brands to create unique experiences. We are already seeing examples of this on the Coast. Many top restaurants are partnering with talented chefs to bring diners together for exciting tasting meals, cooking workshops, and more food events. It’s a good opportunity to meet the chefs and fellow food fans and plan future meet-ups!

Customers are keen to embrace new technologies that enable them to access quality food and drink experiences. For instance, some 43 per cent of people surveyed said they were interested in virtual reality storefronts. This tech involves donning a VR headset and entering a virtual shop, where you can view all the products available, as though you were inside an actual supermarket or greengrocers. The only difference is that you pay for

your purchase from home and you don’t waste the time or fuel getting there and back.

AUGMENTED REALITY

This is also a big demand for AR shopping opportunities. You would still be shopping within a ‘real’ store, but your experience would be greatly enhanced by AR visuals. For instance, you could scan a product with your AR app and obtain extra information about everything from its contents to its nutritional value. Those who wear AR glasses, meanwhile, can access all this information without having to pull out their phone.

TRENDING BITES

The Global Food Report is firmly focused on macro trends, but if you’re a foodie who doesn’t want to miss out on the hottest new gourmet dishes, then make sure to sample the following: » INNOVATIVE FOOD PAIRINGS:

Sweet and sour dishes are so last millennium! When you’re out and about at your favourite restaurant, watch out for combos like sea salt chocolate and vegetable ice-cream, floral flavours combined with strong ingredients like chilli and ginger, and savoury products such as crisps, jazzed up with taste boosters like umami and kokumi. » ESCAPISM THROUGH FOOD:

Around 73 per cent of global consumers have stated that they enjoy travelling the world through food. Ube, matcha, and dragon fruit are top ingredients to watch out for, and you can look forward to more national and regional goodies making their way into mainstream products and gourmet dishes.

» SOUTH AND EAST ASIAN FLAVOURS:

If you haven’t tried sumac, shishito peppers, patis (fish sauce) or gochujang yet, what are you waiting for? These ingredients, which feature so prominently on top mukbang channels, are readily available on Amazon and Asian stores across the Coast so you can easily recreate many of the dishes you view online. » PREMIUM ORIGINS: Savvy restaurants and brands are highlighting the premium provenance of the ingredients used in their products and dishes. From Madagascan vanilla to Filipino ube, Belgian chocolate to Sicilian lemon, it’s all about authenticity, traceability, and transparency. » NEW TASTE SENSATIONS: If you like your espresso martini with a touch of parmesan cheese, then you are probably fully clued-up on this trend. It’s all about creating complex tastes that are new yet still familiar, so much so that they create trends and cause cravings

that must be fulfilled! Just a few ingredients playing a starring role in this trend include hot honey, umami additions to food sauces, sriracha in mayonnaise, and salted caramel in confectionery. » SPICY BAKES: Closely related to the previous trend is the interest in sweet goods jazzed up with cayenne, chipotle, and other hot spices. From chilli raspberry to mango habanero, cakes, cookies, pies, and dessert cups will surprise you with spices usually associated with savoury goods. » BUTTER BOARDS: If you enjoy entertaining then you’ve probably delighted your guests with more than one charcuterie board. There’s a newcomer to the party, though, and it’s sinfully (but deliciously) high in fat: butter! Imagine dipping crackers, crudités, or fried dough into a myriad of different kinds of butter – including those made with honey, dried fruits and flowers, herbs, chilli, and even chimichurri! e

Open House Málaga is more than an architectural showcase; it’s a pulse, a heartbeat that resonates with the rhythms of the city and its inhabitants. It’s an affirmation that architecture, at its core, is about people, their stories, dreams, and aspirations. This festival is not just an observer but a participant in the ebb and flow of Málaga’s urban life.

While many events become stagnant over time, Open House Málaga thrives on change, continually reshaping itself based on the feedback and desires of its community. It recognises that the city’s architectural tapestry is interwoven with the narratives of those who walk its streets and dwell in its spaces. Therefore, it’s only fitting that the people of Málaga play a pivotal role in shaping the festival’s trajectory.

The festival’s emphasis on inclusivity and community engagement sets it apart. By encouraging locals to suggest buildings for inclusion, it underscores the idea that every structure, no matter how grand or humble, has a story worth telling. It’s not just about marvelling at grand edifices but understanding the memories imprinted within walls, the laughter echoing in hallways, and the hopes gazing out from balconies. ›

Expectedly, the stylists opted for a conservative look so it has something of an authoritative, formal stance. There’s nothing cute about the EQS, but then who wants a ‘cute’ SUV in this lordly class anyway? The only point of controversy is probable the very large glossy black panel sited where the radiator used to be on conventional, petrol-engined SUVs. EVs, of course, do not use radiators. Many observers felt that something more imaginative could have been done with that large area, but perhaps Mercedes wants to remind us of carefree days with massive V-8 and V-12 engines lurking behind the grille. ›

The EQ shift is a bold move by MercedesBenz but perhaps one that was expected. Very recently, backtracking by politicians in several countries on the controversy around the banning of petrol-powered cars has prompted some carmakers to modify their intentions, but most of them have had plans in hand for years and are unlikely to ease off the drive to electrification. So expect Mercedes-Benz to plough on with its massive EQ program, and, product by product, to create an EV counterpart to just about every vehicle it’s built over the past twenty years. The EQS EV is right at the top of the electric vehicle spectrum with its level of opulence, performance, and is certainly well beyond the price range of most SUV buyers and probably a size too large anyway. Even so, it gives everyone the opportunity to see what can be done and for electric vehicle doomsayers, it permits an exciting glimpse into the future of luxury vehicles with electric power. e

HYDROGEN-POWERED?

Electric is in, diesel out, petrol not so sure, hybrid a good compromise… and hydrogen? Isn’t it all getting a little confusing? We’re told electric cars are the way forward but for some time we’ve also been hearing that hydrogen could be the ultimate alternative to the combustion engine. Which, if any, is the ‘fuel’ of the future? WORDS MICHEL CRUZ PHOTOGRAPHY TOYOTA AND US DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY

Toyota has been at the forefront of hydrogen car production for some time now 68 | NOVEMBER 2023 | MARBELLA, SPAIN

A hydrogen powered combustion engine

A

ctually, there are really just two types of propulsion systems for cars: internal combustion engines and fuel cells that provide power for electric vehicles. The difference lies in the fuel that propels them. For over a century, we’ve been relying on combustion engines slurping up petrol, or it’s relative, diesel, and recently we’re all about electric engines, but these need to be charged too. They’re either hybrids that use combustion engines to start up and then charge the batteries that drive the

electric motor, or they’re of the plug-in variety. And herein lies the problem, as while an electric motor does not emit greenhouse gasses that contribute to global warming, the power station at the other end of the plug point might very well, to say nothing of the carbon footprint implied inn the construction and disposal of the fuel cells themselves. In other words, an electric car may be clean, but the energy used to charge it up very likely isn’t. So some people continue to look for fresher solutions to the problem, and right

now the main contender is hydrogen.

HOW IT WORKS

In essence, hydrogen is a fuel whose chemical energy is converted to mechanical energy (not unlike petrol), and this can be done either by burning it in a familiar combustion engine or by causing it to react with oxygen in a fuel cell to power an electric motor. For years, BMW seemed very keen on this kind of solution, but in recent times Hyundai and Toyota have taken over the initiative and launched the first hydrogen cars produced on scale – much like Toyota did almost thirty years ago with the first commercial hybrid models. › The hydrogen fuel ecosystem

Pumping station for hydrogen – a rare thing

E FO R LIN N

There are also buses, trucks, trains, ships, and even rockets using hydrogen as a fuel, though aeroplanes lag behind because of their specific requirements. There is still work to be done to perfect the technology and performance, but another problem is the fact that the steam methane forming process currently used to produce hydrogen for commercial use releases carbon dioxide. Other methods exist, such as thermochemical and electrolysis procedures, but as of yet they are too expensive to use on any scale. However, there is every expectation that cost-effective mass-produced hydrogen can be available in the not too distant future.

VIABILITY

As with everything on this planet, the situation revolves around money, as sufficient investment of effort and money would speed up that process and bring viable hydrogen production closer. It therefore remains something of a chicken and egg situation in which financers – and even governments – are loathe to invest in such a solution until it becomes commercially rewarding, thus delaying the latter. And so we remain in an uncomfortable limbo between petrol, diesel, hybrid, electric and, somewhere on the horizon, hydrogen. Naturally, any system worthy of huge investment must provide a significant

70 | NOVEMBER 2023 | MARBELLA, SPAIN

benefit over competing technologies, so what are the advantages of hydrogen? Well, to start with, if produced the right way, it is one of the cleanest forms of energy with a very low carbon footprint, but it also has the advantage of a long range between refuelling, which for the time being remains an Achilles Heel of electric vehicles. From the car itself, only water vapour and warm air are emitted, yet for now this remains a dream, as production continues to be costly, produces little output in relation to the energy required, and is not free of emissions. Also, should hydrogen ever leak into the atmosphere, it is a far

more potent pollutant than even carbon dioxide. The cards are therefore stacked against hydrogen, and with 70,000 cars using this system having been sold by the beginning of 2023 compared with 26 million electric vehicles, it seems unlikely to win the race for the new refuelling infrastructure that must at some point replace our petrol station

network. The likelihood of implementation is looking gloomier than was once hoped for. For now, everything related to hydrogen cars remains expensive – for buyer as well as producers, who tend to lose money on them – and that for little benefit to the environment unless cheaper methods can be found to mass-produce the gas the clean way.

A Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV)

71 | NOVEMBER 2023 | MARBELLA, SPAIN

It will take a miracle breakthrough to give hydrogen a new lease of life, but stranger things have happened, and while this technology seems unlikely to find its way under the bonnets of most vehicles for now, there might well be other fields in which it could make a future contribution after all. e

o why is there so much buzz around this film? Haven’t historical figures been done to death in a myriad of movies, ranging from Malcolm X to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart? Historiographers and film buffs would probably agree, however, that Napoleon (as with Alexander the Great) was a uniquely captivating and enigmatic individual. He achieved greatness and wreaked havoc on a plethora of populations through authoritarianism, military conquests, and the imposition of his rule across

the European continent. Critics also frequently point out his aggressive foreign policy and the many wars he waged, which resulted in the loss of countless lives and invaluable resources. However, he continues to fascinate, in an era in which military matters are generally feared rather than embraced. His brilliant military strategies and tactics and his faster-thanlightning decision-making prowess are still the stuff that many postgraduate theses and biographies are based upon. Napoleon is famed for more than

77 | NOVEMBER 2023 | MARBELLA, SPAIN

his talent on the field. He also implemented several legal reforms in France, including the Napoleonic Code (which established legal equality and protected individual rights) and laying the groundwork for the French legal system. His reign was known for its stability since he put an end to the mayhem caused by the French Revolution and the subsequent Reign of Terror. Some also say that Napoleon’s legacy laid the groundwork for modern nation-states. Others view his actions as harmful to the sovereignty of other nations. ›

Marlon Brando). What’s more, during the 2023 Berlin International Film Festival, Steven Spielberg announced that he would be turning Stanley Kubrick’s Napoleon into a seven-part limited series. Napoleon was originally slotted in as Kubrick’s follow-up to his landmark sci-fiction marvel, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and was planned as a profound immersion into the life of Napoleon Bonaparte.

Kubrick foresaw this film as a massive undertaking, featuring the transportation of 40,000 soldiers across a number of locations – including Romania, France, and the UK. The film was never made due to its over-ambitious plans. However, Spielberg will have an easier task on his hands, owing to the big technological advances that have been made over the past few decades – including the ability to digitally recreate grandiose battles using just a tenth of the workforce originally envisioned.

Scott’s film will be no less impressive, as it will feature six epic battles and a host of scenes portraying Napoleon’s personal life. It will not only present the highlights of his life (or his dramatic downfall) but rather, his entire life, detailing the inimitable qualities that led to his rise in the political and military spheres. What really sealed the deal for Phoenix was the chance to work with Scott again. He told film magazine, Empire, “I had such an incredible

experience working with Ridley on Gladiator, and I was so young. It was my first big production. I really yearned for that experience again, or something similar.” It definitely wasn’t the first time that Scott had approached the actor, but the latter was waiting for a special project… one that would demand the most of him. And you can imagine the scale of it – it is Phoenix’s only film this year. Next up is another iconic role in the highly awaited follow-up to the 2019 hit, Joker. ›

« BACK TO CONTENTS One of the most interesting aspects of the production of Napoleon is the great synergy between the thespian and his director. Phoenix is just about as confident and (sometimes) cocky an actor as you can get, so it is heartwarming to discover that when it came to Napoleon, he didn’t know where to start. Scott told Empire that just two weeks before the first filming day, Phoenix expressed that he was completely lost. Scott, as much a mentor as he is a visionary, sat down with him for 10 full days and explained scene after scene. Scott relates, “In a sense, we rehearsed detail by detail.” Scott perfectly summarised why Phoenix

SPOTLIGHT | PEOPLE was the ideal man for the job. The director sees him as “the best player of damaged goods.” He had previously told the press that casting Phoenix as the emperor resulted in the entire script being rewritten. Scott called him “about as far from conventional as you can get. Not deliberately, but out of intuition. That’s what makes him tick.” The actor isn’t shy, said Scott, to question things and question the script he did! The result was a brandnew script that enabled Phoenix to focus on who Napoleon really was. To put it simply, his feedback made the film better. As great as an actor is, a film never falls entirely on his shoulders, and Phoenix will

be surrounded by some of the best. Those who enjoyed the series The Crown, will be thrilled to hear that one of its best actors, Vanessa Kirby (who played Princess Margaret) will give life to Empress Joséphine. Rupert Everett will be playing Arthur Wellesley (Duke of Wellington and main rival of Napoleon), while the talented Tahar Rahim (winner of a César for Best Actor) will give life to Paul Barras, a prominent French politician during the French Revolution. If largerthan-life historical figures, clashes on the battlefield, and unforgettable acting are your thing, then you’ll probably be on the edge of your seat for this highlyawaited film! e

A sense of arrival

EARTH

LIVE IN YOUR OWN RESORT Do you remember that feeling when you drive up to a luxury Mediterranean resort in the evening? Ambient lighting illuminates the elegant structure and as you get out of the car you hear the sound of crickets in the background. n a crowded market, Earth is an upscale residential community that stands out for the details which make its 28 cutting edge apartments and penthouses not only supremely stylish and comfortable, but also homes within a private five-star resort. This has been the trend in the upper segment for some time now, but getting it just right – between design, amenities and service – is another question, and one that takes both an eye for perfection and the experience that comes with it. The standard elements that go into the making of an offering of this standing are of course a prime location that offers peace, tranquillity and security along with spectacular sea and country views and

easy access to the lifestyle amenities of Marbella. After this come the ingredients from which the residential community itself is crafted, and these include tasteful, eyecatching architectural design and interior layouts that blend homeliness and comfort with functionality and easy maintenance. A quality development further distinguishes itself through the choice of materials, finishes, the luxury brands used in appliances and the technical standards of construction, engineering and electronics. To this, these days, we also add a commitment to sustainable development both in the building and subsequent functioning of the community, whose greatly reduced consumption of water and energy also makes possible cost savings. ›

TOP TIKTOK

BEAUTY TRENDS FOR AUTUMNWINTER 2023

# COQUETTEBEAUTY To ace this look, inspire yourself on all things Barbiecore, but take it down a few notches, while still ensuring it’s all about the colour pink. Pair an eyeshadow shade like shade B2 on Anastasia Beverly Hills’ Norvina Pro Pigment Palette Vol. 5 with Lana Del Reystyle eyeliner and beautiful thick lashes. Keep your face natural, with very light rosy cheeks (try Too Faced’s Cloud Crush blush powder). The essence of this look is femininity and glamour.

TikTok, once the exclusive realm of teenyboppers showing off their latest choreographies, has definitely broken the glass ceiling, with a current active user count of a whopping one billion! While around 47 per cent of its users are aged 29 and below, adults are using this service too, for everything from quick recipes to fashion and beauty tips. What’s so cool about TikTok? It aligns with the needs of users who are way too busy to catch an entire YouTube video, with all its lengthy explanations and unnecessary verbiage. If you are a beauty lover and you enjoy sporting the very latest ‘it’ looks of the season, then read on! WORDS MARISA CUTILLAS

Latte is just a fancy way of saying light coffee in the TikTok beauty sphere. This trend essentially involves creating smoky eyes with soft brown shades (think the color of a dark café latte). An ideal product to use for a really smooth look is an eyeshadow stick. Rare Beauty’s All of the Above Shadow Stick in Adventure or Contentment is a good choice. Use the same stick as your eyeliner and spend a long time blending the colour until it looks like a second skin. For the face, use a cream bronzer and once again, blend away until you achieve a bronze, tanned look that isn’t overdone. For the lips, use a brown liner (try the Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk Lip Liner in 2 Medium) and a brown lipstick (Huda Beauty’s Power Bullet in the shade Last Night is perfect for coffee-hued puckers). ›

#METALLICACCENTNAILS

The biggest look in nails this season is simplicity – clear nails or a simple French manicure will be all over the red carpet and top social media channels. However, this doesn’t mean you need to keep your nails bare. The magic comes in the form of metallic accents. Think a tiny drop of gold or silver over a French manicured nail, or soft swirls of metal (bronze or silver), with different patterns adorning each nail.

# GLASSSKIN Imagine skin that is so smooth and glowing that it looks like glass. That’s what this trend is all about – deep hydration and all-round good health. To achieve this look, start by investing time and care in your daily beauty routine. Double-cleanse your skin if you’re wearing makeup to ensure your pores are totally clean. Next, use an exfoliating toner to help eliminate dead skin cells. Give your skin a hydrating treat with a sheet mask, massaging the serum left behind after you remove the sheet. Next, apply a serum containing hyaluronic acid, then a light, non-comedogenic moisturiser. Finally, apply a sunscreen. To achieve this look with makeup, embrace high-glow products like a glowy foundation (try Shiseido’s Synchro Ski Glow Luminizing Fluid Foundation), liquid bronzer and highlighter, and a full-on glowy lip (Maybelline’s SuperStay Vinyl Ink Shine Finish in the tone Cheeky is a cheap and chic option).

# GRUNGEMAKEUP

Kelly Elizabeth Designs

Considering the fact that natural, glowing looks are the defining look of the year, it’s great to see alternative trends co-exist with simple ones. The 90s grunge look was all about gloomy lip hues like burgundy and dark red, as well as heavy smudged eyeliner and thick mascara. The emphasis of the look must always be on the eyes. Concentrate on soft smoky grey hues, a myriad of which can be found in Jeffree Star’s Cremation palette. Oh, and don’t forget to paint your nails in the ultimate sexy shade of the season – Nuit 1947 by Dior! e

BEATING THE WINTER BLUES

C

onversely, people who do not enjoy sunshine and lack this release of serotonin have an increased possibility of feeling depressed, with mood changes and feelings of sadness, often thought of as the winter blues, also known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). People who suffer from SAD can have minimal to severe effects, from minor cases of not wanting to get out of bed in the morning to more serious affects where people may need to take antidepressants or receive therapy and be advised to sit in front of light boxes each day. Sunshine also boosts your levels of Vitamin D. This is an important vitamin

which aids your body to absorb calcium, and Vitamin D in combination with calcium helps prevent the development of osteoporosis, which is a disease that affects the bones, making them brittle and more likely to break. There are also new studies being conducted to test the relationship between Vitamin D and how it can help the body with insulin production and possibly aid in the prevention of certain diseases and some types of cancer. Living in the South of Spain allows us to enjoy many more light hours in the day and a warmer climate with an average of 333 sunshine days in the year. This is quite a contrast to the dreary weather in 142 | NOVEMBER 2023 | MARBELLA, SPAIN

the United Kingdom where the sun is rarely seen from November to May and there is an average of 239 cloudy days per year. Apparently only 63 sunny days were recorded in London in 2019 and the further north you go, the more dismal the weather. One of the lowest ranking cities weatherwise in the UK is Glasgow where they experience some of the lowest sunshine hours and summer temperatures reaching average highs of only 15 – 17 degrees Celsius. There are some cities that experience six months of semi-darkness, one being in Norway where they had to install mirrors that move and rotate on special axes to capture and project glimpses of sunlight towards the town centre.

I have always believed that places with more sunshine make people happier in general and they walk around smiling and enjoying themselves and their surroundings a lot more. This has different scientific explanations, one of which is that exposure to sunshine releases the hormone serotonin in the brain and this enhances a person’s mood and feelings of happiness. Getting a daily boost of sunshine can be important for both your physical and mental health. Enjoying the positive effects of sunshine can take just half an hour a day during a leisurely walk; it does not mean that you need to lie out for hours baking in the sun. Time spent in natural light also helps regulate our circadian clock (natural daily cycles) which enable us to sleep better at night. During winter, it is easy to spiral into an unhealthy pattern of less exercise, heavier eating, increasing your food intake, staying in and watching television, and forgetting about physical activities. Once you get into this sequence it is hard to break out of it. With shorter and colder days it can be difficult to find a regular rhythm of exercising outdoors and trying to enjoy glimpses of sunlight in the cold and bleak temperatures. So it is important to put together a plan at the

beginning of autumn and to continue with it during the darkest and coolest months of the year. This can help avoid the onset of winter depression, weight gain, reduced movement, and bad moods. To enhance your mood in winter and find ways to boost your Vitamin D and serotonin during shorter days with less sunshine, you need to think outside of the box. Start the day opening the curtains in the house and allowing in as much light as possible. Dress warmly so you are less inclined to feel the cold and avoid being outdoors. There are many other ideas to try to enhance your daily mood and get some natural light, such as eating your breakfast outside on the terrace, sitting next to a window in your office, meeting a friend for a walk at the start or end of the day to keep you motivated to get out and about, and avoiding escaping home for the television and a warm hearty meal. As Billy 143 | NOVEMBER 2023 | MARBELLA, SPAIN

Connolly says, “There’s no such thing as bad weather – only the wrong clothes!” With winter fast approaching, embrace the cooler weather with a plan to keep you active and happy. Finding a balance and enjoying a healthy lifestyle with some sunshine will make you look and feel better all year round. Some sunshine in moderation will enhance your feelings of wellbeing and help you to shine also. WRITINGSTAR_TV

iving on the edge of a golf course, close to beaches and nature, is a cherished privilege of the Costa del Sol, and one of the things that draws so many people to these shores. Of course, not every urbanisation does this with the same finesse as not all tick the boxes in terms of convenience of location, the beauty of their natural surroundings, and other factors such as security, privacy, facilities

and conveniences on your doorstep. For this reason, those residential developments that can offer all of the above stand out and Soleia Living is among them. The clue here is in the word ‘living’, as the 69 luxury modern townhouse villas that make up this resort community have been designed with lifestyle and quality of life in mind, with a team determined to bring out the best in a green setting within the 18-hole parkland of the El Chaparral golf course. 147 NOVEMBER 2023 | MARBELLA, SPAIN

Their architectural styling is a reimagining of traditional Mediterranean design but with the tastes, comforts and technology, as well as the open-plan distribution of a modern age incorporated into it, and the result is a wonderful blend of tradition and modernity surrounded by the greenery of fairways and pine forests. and Málaga, both about 20 minutes away. In spite of having every amenity of the Costa del Sol within a halfhour range, this is a very private and tranquil living environment in the embrace of nature – accompanied by the kind of sea, mountain and golf views that this region is also famous for. The smart design of the townhouses facilitates a seamless flow between the interior living spaces and the terraces, which become an outdoor extension of the home. They in turn flow on to private gardens and swimming pools from which to enjoy the stunning views and the calming setting,

while the open-plan interior layout adds to the sense of space within the lounge, dining room and attractive designer kitchen with quality appliances. Upstairs, the three and fourbedroom villas continue the sense of space and appealing distribution that is the product of intelligent design borne out of a great deal of experience. As the commercialising agent partnering with the developer, Tuscany Realty has contributed to this process, which also ensures that the positioning and landscaping of Soleia Living makes the most of spectacular views and connects with the nature that envelopes it.

DESIGNED FOR ENJOYMENT Quality of life is clearly central to the concept of Soleia Living El Chaparral, and this begins with its location within a landscaped estate and its proximity to La Cala de Mijas at a point close to the most important resort towns of the Costa del Sol. External amenities are complemented by the appeal of the homes themselves, which merge attractive design with quality materials, top brands, and the energy savings that come from an environmentfriendly approach to development. ndalucía boasts a rich agricultural heritage, with its olive groves standing as a testament to centuries-old traditions. Olive trees, living hundreds of years with their gnarled trunks and silver-green leaves, serve as biological monuments which form part of the fundamental pillars of prosperity in the region. Particularly during the harvesting months of October to early December, Spaniards find great pride and purpose in the yield produced by these generationally cherished trees. The region’s olive groves have been an integral part of Andalusian culture and its economic identity for millennia, thanks to the warm climate, fertile soil, and the farmers’ passion for the olive and devotion to perfecting its cultivation. Andalucía is the largest olive tree grower in the world, boasting a sprawling expanse of over 1.5 million hectares which produce an impressive annual output of 900,000 tonnes of olive oil and 380,000 tonnes of table olives. This constitutes an average of 80% of Spain’s total olive production. The growing of olive trees within Andalucía has had such a dramatic impact on the towns and communities, that the region even implemented its very own Olive Grove Law

Jaén, Córdoba, Sevilla, Málaga and Granada are the provinces considered to be at the forefront of the olive harvest, with Jaén holding the internationally renowned title of ‘World Capital of Olive Oil,’ an accolade which is not unsurprising considering that 4,500 square kilometres of land in Jaén is occupied by 40 million olive trees. and crucial period for the dedicated families, farmers, and workers involved in the business of olive harvesting and olive oil production. Even those who do not directly work within the industry, are still part of the hubbub, with olive oil tourism in abundance. Communities throughout Andalucía take great pride in the thriving tradition, which can be observed in the daily conversations of the locals as the groves come alive with activity at the first veraison harvest (the stage at which the olives change colour from green to purple). combs, the olives embark on a journey to the mill. During olive oil production they will undergo a meticulous process of cleaning, milling, and extracting the precious olive paste that will later yield the liquid gold. The olive paste is subjected to hydraulic presses, separating the oil from the water and solids. This initial pressing results in extra virgin olive oil, revered for its purity and intense flavour profile. After pressing, the oil undergoes filtration to remove any remaining impurities, ensuring a clear and pristine final product. It is then carefully bottled, ready to embark on its journey to kitchens around the world. ›

BEYOND MARBELLA: GATEWAY TO OLIVE PARADISE It’s fair to say that if you have not experienced an olive grove in Andalucía, then you have not experienced the true roots of the region. Visitor-friendly farms and fincas can be found up and down the country, with some great estates less than 1.5 hours from Marbella. FINCA LA TORRE BOBADILLA (1HR 20 MINS FROM MARBELLA) Set against the backdrop of the Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park, Finca La Torre gives space to 380 hectares of land which has been divided between 230 hectares of olive groves and 150 hectares of pastures. The renowned olive farm provides visitors with an immersive experience from grove to press, offering a deep

understanding of the olive oilmaking process with guided tours, a masterful culinary experience, and an opportunity for highquality retail therapy. However, the tourism extends far beyond the grove, as just a few kilometers away lies Antequera with its World Heritage Dolmens, famous for their remarkable architectural works of European prehistory and one of the most important examples of European

Megalithism. Antequera also contains some of the most incredible natural sites such as the Fuente de Piedra Natural Reserve with its phenomenal lagoon, and Torcal de Antequera Natural Park where ancient rock formations tower overhead like ginormous fairy sandcastles. THE JUMILLA REGION IT’S ALL ABOUT THE GRAPE

A factor that cannot be ignored, is that consumers are increasingly influenced by the grape varieties used to make their favourite wines. In the bad old days, we hardly gave a thought to the matter, and dinner table arguments about the relative qualities of tempranillo or garnacha were unusual to say the least. Currently, however, it is on the verge of becoming an administrative issue, and the numerous controlling official organisations, Consejos Reguladores, that dictate what varieties and how many of each, wineries can plant, will affect what we drink in the coming years. For the first time in history, a Spanish wine region (La Rioja) has prohibited any increase in production, which means there is clearly something very wrong. This order applies to the years 2024, 2025 and 2026. WORDS ANDREW J LINN PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF BODEGAS ALCEÑO AND BODEGAS JUAN GIL

S

o, are there, for example, too many wine regions (currently about 70) in competition with each other? Or is rivalry from up-and-coming wine producing countries dimming the focus on Spain? Whatever the explanation, there is a crisis, even though consumers who are not fussy about the source of what they drink come out as winners and many bodegas as losers. Native grape varieties are threatened by invaders almost everywhere. ‘International’ grape varieties such as Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sauvignon Blanc, are more frequently accepted by the mass market than native varieties with unfamiliar names, although genuine

aficionados usually prefer to stick to domestic varieties in the knowledge that they might one day vanish from the scene. The Jumilla wine region in south-eastern Spain, located in Murcia, is known for its red wines, especially those made from the Monastrell grape. While there are various bodegas in the Jumilla region with half decent wines, there are only a few that are up there with wineries from the better-known regions. Visiting the area and its wineries can be a great way to explore the local wine scene and discover hidden gems. Winemakers in Jumilla have focused on improving the quality of their wines while respecting traditional practices. ›

« BACK TO CONTENTS

This has led to the production of high-quality wines that are more competitive on a national and international scale. After several false starts, they have finally got around to participating in wine fairs, events, and competitions, allowing Jumilla wines to gain exposure beyond the local market. Positive reviews from wine critics have also contributed to the global recognition of Jumilla wines, that, in turn, has also boosted their reputation within Spain, even though the main proposal in many restaurants remains ‘Rioja or Ribera del Duero’. Often swimming against the local tide, the region has diversified its wine offerings, producing a range of styles, including wines made from the Monastrell grape. This variety is well-suited to the region’s climate, bearing in mind the effects of global warming. The history of Jumilla can be traced back to Roman times when the region was known as Complutum. The Romans recognised the potential of the local terroir and, as in practically all the countries they ‘civilised’, planted vines. During the Moorish occupation of Spain, the tradition of winemaking continued, and

GOURMET | WINE

even after the Reconquista, when Christian forces retook the Iberian Peninsula, the region’s monasteries played a pivotal role in preserving and advancing viticulture. Monks refined winemaking techniques and cultivated vineyards, leading to the region’s growing reputation for wine. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the phylloxera epidemic devastated many vineyards across Europe, including Jumilla. However, the region’s resilience and determination led to the replanting of vineyards with diseaseresistant rootstocks. It received the official Denominación de Origen (DO) status in 1966, marking a significant milestone in its history, and granting legal protection to the Jumilla DO. Today, Jumilla wines are prized for their bold, full-bodied character and are a testament to the region’s enduring commitment to winemaking excellence. With a history dating back to antiquity, Jumilla continues to be a significant player in Spain’s wine industry.
