SPICY CRADLE OF EUROPE Atmospheric Monastiraki Square in the evening

Athens is the venerable cradle of civilisation in Europe – the former city state that gave us the dream of democracy (a Greek word), but visit it today and you will find it to be a lively, spicy Mediterranean city with a touch of the Middle East. WORDS MICHEL CRUZ

The quaint streets of Plaka, one of Athens’ most evocative districts

A

thens may be somewhat overlooked at times, tucked as it is into the south-eastern corner of Europe, but it is a great metropolis and a city of many firsts. The mother of European democracy was once a powerful city state that brought forth many legendary intellectuals and artists such as Plato and Socrates. As the southernmost capital in Europe it is also the hottest on the continent, as you will notice if you visit in

summer. One of the oldest cities in the world, Athens is an original, ancient metropolis (another Greek word), and while in classical times its population swelled to well over half a million, now that number is almost seven times as high, putting the Greek capital right up there with Madrid and Rome in terms of size. A place that big naturally sprawls over several distinct districts, and Athens is certainly a city with local flavour. ›

CLASSIC SIGHTS But before you delve into lively flea markets off little squares or hit the cafés and nightlife spots of Athinai’s suburban areas, the classic thing to do is to admire its stunning monuments straight out of the glory of Ancient Greece. You see, we stand in awe of Rome and its might, but much of Rome was but a more militaristic copy of Greece. Indeed, the Romans copied Greek architecture, culture, art, theatre, uniforms, even their religion and pantheon

– right down to emulating some elements of their democracy. In this way, Poseidon became Neptune, Zeus became Jupiter, and Rome’s famous palaces and public buildings were modelled on original versions that still stand proudly in Athens. The most obviously eye-catching of these is of course the Acropolis, the three-hectare large citadel complex that overlooks this sea of buildings from its limestone outcrop 150 metres above sea level. In its earliest form, the Acropolis dates back almost

3,000 years! Easily the most iconic part of this wonder of the classical world is the Parthenon, an ancient temple that defines the very concept of early classical and later Neoclassical architecture based upon the well-known Greek column varieties. When it comes to the chance of strolling amid the giants of the distant past, only Rome itself equals Athens within Europe, but there are other historic sights to behold as well, including a whole collection of Neoclassical palaces and museums inspired by Greek independence in the 19th century. › The shoreline near Piraeus

Beautiful Astir beach – a lesser-known jewel of Athens

Classical Greece became part of the Roman Empire, then the seat of the Eastern Roman Empire, with its capital not in Athens but in Constantinople (today’s Istanbul), before the latter was renamed Byzantium during the postRoman Byzantine period. It all (including Athens) fell to the invading Turks in the Middle Ages, and so once-proud Greece lost its independence for several centuries before regaining it with French help in the 1830s.

MORE THAN HISTORY But there is more than history alone to Athens. Veer away from the tourist-filled sights and find your way down to the main squares and shopping streets, such as Ermou, and Syntagma Square. Now you’re in the heart of the city, surrounded by the unmistakable bustle of Athens, as well as famous monuments such as the National Gardens, the old parliament and royal palace, as well as numerous

museums and luxurious hotels. Don’t miss the iconic Evzones soldiers guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, they’re pretty unique. Let the lively bustle flow over you like a wave and you will feel a sense of familiarity with a Spanish city, although the scent of Greek cooking, coffee and spices wafting over from the plentiful restaurants and cafés has a slightly more exotic feel to it. ›

In the evenings, take a cab to Psiri, an elegant part of town that’s known for a lively dining, café society and live music taverna scene. In fact, you’d do well to book a hotel here, and stroll through the cobbled streets of Páka and Anafiotika in search of charm and a hearty lunch. Athens is also a coastal city, so take a train to one of the many beachside areas, such as Palaio Faliro and Alimos, of course not missing out on the lively pleasures of Piraeus, the harbour city of Athens. ›

THE PLATINUM

QUEEN 50 / JUNE 2022 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

As beacons light up all over the UK and Commonwealth this month to mark Queen Elizabeth ll’s Platinum Jubilee, looks back on her record-breaking 70-year reign. She was on an idyllic safari with Prince Philip at Treetops in Kenya when the news came: King George Vl is dead. Long live the Queen! From the day her father died, February 6, 1952, the Queen who was never meant to be threw herself into a life of service and self-sacrifice in ways that have won the respect of pretty much everyone the world over, anti-monarchists included.

H

eir to The Firm by virtue of her uncle King Edward Vlll abdicating to marry divorcee Wallis Simpson, she was a 25-yearold mother of two when she took over the helm, keeping the monarchy afloat through seven choppy decades while some of her family seemed intent on sinking it. And although it might have foundered on the rocks of her initial apparent indifference to the death of People’s Princess Diana, she navigated serenely around them with the stoicism of her namesake, Queen Elizabeth l when facing the Spanish Armada. Queens these days have a lot less power, as Elizabeth II noted in the first televised Queen’s Speech (Christmas 1957): “I cannot lead you

into battle, I do not give you laws or administer justice but I can give you my heart and my devotion.” They could

sack a prime minister – Boris beware – but only in exceptional circumstances. Constitutional monarchs are expected to work with their

governments, not against them. More bluntly, as the antimonarchist Daily Mirror wrote, she is ‘The first British monarch ever to pretty much do what she’s told. She’s paid tax, given up her yacht, lowered the flag and bowed to Diana’s coffin, had Martin McGuinness over for tea… had she not been so flexible and compliant the monarchy might not have survived past 1997.’ Inspired by her father who only reigned for 16 years, Elizabeth is on the way to quintupling that. At 96 and a great grandmother 12 times over, the 40th ruler since William the Conqueror is the longest-lived and longestreigning British monarch and the longest-serving female head of state in history.

British monarch and the longestserving female head of state in history. She has supported 14 British prime ministers, starting with Winston Churchill, hosted 13 US Presidents and circumnavigated the globe several times in her role as Head of the Commonwealth of Nations. In Sydney during her 1970 tour she pioneered the first ‘royal walkabout’, bucking centuries of traditional waving from a distance. As patron on the letterheads of 620 charities, she goes to the opening of every envelope as well as helping to fill them. “One has to be seen to be believed,” she has said. “I can never wear beige because nobody will know who I am.” 52 / JUNE 2022 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

Iconic, today, for her colourful coats and Mad Hatter hats that would say the queen even if the queen wasn’t wearing them, and the black handbag she shifts from one arm to the other to signal she’s ready to wrap up a conversation, Her Majesty is the crown jewel of Britain’s national treasures. Although noticeably frailer, with mobility problems that forced her to miss her first State Opening of Parliament since 1963 (when she was pregnant), ‘She remains very much centre stage and really enjoys what she does’, according to Robert Hardman whose biography, Queen of Our Times, is just out. “And, when you get behind

the scenes, she does keep politicians on their toes. I don’t think people will realise until she’s gone how much she is part of the national landscape. She is such a reassuring figure… there’s the sense that the wheels aren’t going to fall off as long as there’s a flag flying above Buckingham Palace.” Not everyone loves the institution but the Queen is rated top royal with a 75% popularity ranking on YouGov, while heir to the throne Charles languishes in sixth place with 50%. Elizabeth commands a respect not yet earned by the rest of the royal family, say royal watchers, which will create unpredictability for her successor. ›

JUBILEE FEVER Brits all over the UK will be handing up union jack bunting and painting their towns red, white and blue for the four-day Platinum Jubilee weekend (June 2-5). In the capital, it kicks off with the Trooping of the Colour at the Queen’s Official Birthday Parade, finished with an RAF flypast and the traditional balcony wave – confined to working royals this year, diplomatically excluding Harry, Meghan and Andrew… Later, a beacon lit at the Palace will set off a nationwide chain of 1,500 bonfires, reciprocated

in the 54 Commonwealth capitals. Pop meets pomp and circumstance in a packed mega-weekend crowned by the Platinum Jubilee Pageant, a carnival version of the Queen’s reign in four acts expected to attract more TV viewers than the London Olympics opening ceremony. It’s unlikely the Queen will attend it but at least it’s not on water this time, unlike the Diamond Jubilee Pageant when the royal party froze their butts off on a Thames barge in the rain and Philip went down with a fever! › London’s Mall mobbed for the Diamond Jubilee © Garry Knight Flickr

Sets flew off the shelves as people scrambled to buy one of these new-fangled gizmos, and over 20 million people in Britain saw the solid gold 2.3 kilo coronation crown placed on Elizabeth’s head. The Imperial State Crown worn for State Openings of Parliament is still heavy at half the weight, as the Queen noted in a 2018 BBC documentary. “You can’t look down to read the speech because if you did, your neck would break.” ›

A prince of Greece and Denmark and Elizabeth’s third cousin through Queen Victoria, their marriage spanned 73 years. Philip’s dry wit set people at ease but he could lack diplomacy. During the first visit of a British monarch to China in 1986 he called Beijing ‘ghastly’ and told a group of British students they would get ‘slitty eyes’ if they stayed too long. When he died last year, a few months short of getting his 100th birthday telegram from the queen, images of her sitting alone (as per Covid rules) at his funeral were a striking symbol of her grief and her eulogy said it all:

For once, the Queen broke the royal golden rule – ‘never complain, never explain’ – referring to her ‘horrible year’ in Latin in a speech to mark the 40th anniversary of her Accession.

But 2019, dubbed Annus Horribilis II by royal biographer Penny Junor, was “probably more horrible”. here is something incredibly satisfying about watching influencers like Jodi M Mosley, Ammika Harris, and Tracey Ellison unboxing new jewellery and wearing it for the first time. The packaging, style, and quality of designs by brands like Van Cleef & Arpels, Messika, or David Yurman are awe-inspiring, each piece tempting you for a different reason. These designs convert a simple outfit into something special and best of all, their appeal only increases as the years go by. Diamond specialists, Rough Polished, report that jewellery is no longer viewed

as a traditional item of value given by men to women as a romantic gesture. Across the globe, a growing number of ‘sisters are doing it for themselves’, building their fine jewellery collections as rewards for achievements or to commemorate milestone moments. If you are curating a fine jewellery collection for the first time, it pays to invest in key pieces by leading brands, alternating them with items by newer designers, as well as quality fashion jewellery made in materials like vermeil or gold filling. Pieces such as Cartier’s Juste un Clou ring are valuable today and they will be tomorrow;

rarer collections will even go up in price. Beautiful jewellery ought to put a smile on your face and make you feel more confident. Heirloom pieces should additionally stand the test of time, boasting resilience to wear and tear. Let’s cut to the chase and suggest a small number of items that are considered essential pieces in any serious jewellery collection. Follow Jodi M Mosley’s advice and stack up your bangles and cuffs, making sure to mix metals and styles. Once in a while, however, give each piece the protagonist it deserves by wearing it alone. ›

MILLEN NIALS THESE LUXURY BEASTS

Consumers in power and trendsetters, comprising those aged 20-35 years old, are shaking up the ways of luxury. This generation is about to become one of the biggest spenders in history, having made a major shift toward luxury purchases in the past year. According to Business of Fashion, Generation Z and Millennials will together account for 45% of the luxury market by 2025. But are they really spending enough at Prada and Dior to have that much influence on luxury brands? The answer is yes. WORDS GAËLLE MOUSSET

HOW MILLENNIALS ARE SHAPING LUXURY?

epresenting a big proportion of the population with a growing purchasing power, Millennials and Gen Z have become crucial players in the luxury industry, so much so that all brands need to consider this new customer base. These young consumers have very different needs, expectations, and consumption habits

than their parents and grandparents. This is not only due to them being born or growing up in an era governed largely by digital, social networks and image, but also because the level of demand of this generation is very high, having today the possibility to compare, analyse, be inspired and criticise. ›

WHO ARE THESE MILLENNIALS AND ZOOMERS? HOW DOES THEIR BUYING BEHAVIOUR IMPACT ON LUXURY BRANDS? First, we must make a difference between Millennials and Gen Z, both often confused. Millennials, or Generation Y, were born between 1981 and 1996 and represent young people aged 26 to 41. Zoomers, or Generation Z, on the other hand, were born after 1996. Gen Z is the first generation to grow up on digital platforms. They get their fashion, travel and luxury inspirations from their favorite influencers or micro-influencers on Instagram, TikTok and Youtube. These inspirations are also found in the varieties of places they discover, physically or digitally.

84 / JUNE 2022 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

And they influence Millennials, whose concerns about climate change and sustainability have deepened. These young consumers are increasingly turning to the high-end and very high-end, bringing new expectations to luxury brands, especially in terms of new technologies and sustainability. According to payment services company Klarna, Members of Generation Z and Millennials purchased more luxury items than their older, Generation X in the past 12 months.

A SHIFT TO DIGITAL Luxury brands have already recognised the importance of investing in digital and communicating through

this channel. Even if there is a real pleasure in entering a luxury store and having an extraordinary shopping experience, luxury is nowadays largely bought on the internet. With the pandemic and the numerous online purchases, luxury brands have had to accelerate their transition to digital. With an ever-younger clientele, luxury brands must not neglect their presence on social networks either. 83% of Generation Z consumers and nearly two-thirds of Millennials say they follow luxury brands on social networks. And almost as many say they have bought something after discovering a product on a social network, led by TikTok. ›

ALWAYS MORE NOVELTY AND CREATIVITY

© Laura Chouette / Unsplash

The new demands of Millennials and Gen Z are pushing luxury brands to look even further for new concepts, new ideas and new interpretations of luxury. This is where collaborations and co-branding take a big part in the new trends, striving for design innovation as well as unique collections that purchasers will snap up.

86 / JUNE 2022 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

These collaborations, often presented in limited editions, create such a high demand from consumers that a kind of hysteria is created around these different pieces. Handbags, sneakers and luxury watches have become iconic objects that sometimes result in waiting lists of several years to finally become the happy owner. For examples, the famous Louis Vuitton and Supreme sneakers or the iconic Birkin by

Hermès come to mind. “There used to be a waiting list, but now you have to be rich or important,” notes Business Insider regarding the Birkin. When Millennials and Gen Z go luxury shopping, they’re not looking to buy an It Bag with a logo found at the local mall. They want something unique, soughtafter, with clearly stated values. A promise that luxury brands must be able to deliver.

© Evelyn Semenyuk / Unsplash

Generation Z is also the one with strong opinions on sustainability and ‘repair and rewear’. Luxury brands must therefore naturally orient themselves towards this new trend displayed by young consumers. As an example, Alexander McQueen has partnered with the platform Vestiaire Collective to take back the old products of its customers and authenticate them for resale. For Farfetch, sales of their ‘conscious’ brands have grown 3.4 times faster than the rest of its market. A considerable number of its customers are indeed looking for animalfree, quality and sustainable products. Between quality, artisanal techniques, local circulation and the investments made by customers, isn’t luxury finally more sustainable than the so-called ‘classic’ brands? About 59% of luxury buyers say that their luxury purchases are more sustainable. These new generations of demanding and seasoned consumers have clearly changed the luxury industry and what it has to offer. This industry must constantly renew itself to surprise and fulfill the expectations of these young end users. e

PURE BRED HORSES

IBERIAN STYLE You may not be aware of the fact, but the Iberian Peninsula is home to one of the finest horse breeds and equestrian traditions in the world, and the Spanish version of it belongs to Andalucía. WORDS MICHEL CRUZ

A

ncestors of what has become the modern Iberian horse are known to have been present on the peninsula for over 20,000 years, roaming its plains before helping mankind conquer nature in these parts and farm the land. The development of settlements, towns and indeed civilisations is intricately related to the horse, which plays a prominent role in humankind’s evolution. Without horse power, much of it would have slowed down considerably, so we have a lot to thank our equine friends for, and among those that have served us so well there are few breeds as noble as that indigenous to this peninsula.

98 / JUNE 2022 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

Famous already in Phoenician and Roman times, the Iberian horse was renowned for its speed, strength and grace, features that made it an empire builder here and abroad. Foreign powers took the breed back with them, and the invading Muslims added the bloodline of their own beautiful Arabian horses to it, creating a distinctive type that has been recognised as a breed in its own right since the 15th century. Not much later the Spanish conquistadores took this walking war machine, which gave them such an advantage in battle, to the far reaches of their emerging empire, and so began the long process by which the Iberian horse has spread across

the world. But make no mistake, for the Iberian horse, now known as the Pura Raza Española (the Pure Spanish Horse), is of this peninsula and remains connected to its land. The conformation characteristics established centuries ago, such as powerful neck and hindquarters, a thick mane and tail, and an elegant gait, remain the reference points when judging the purity and quality of today’s Iberians, whose close, almost identical, relative is the Lusitano from Portugal. Together, they helped in the creation of empires, but were also used to draw carriages, herd cattle, in bullfighting,

Where the Puro Sangue Lusitano (Pure Blood Lusitano) is mostly grey or chestnut-coloured, the Spanish version tends more generally towards solid grey coats, but these prized animals which once formed the bartering tool of kings and emperors are otherwise almost identical and the pride of their respective countries. By the beginning of the 20th century, centuries of warfare and exportation, not to mention uncontrolled cross-breeding, had caused the noble bloodline to become diffused, and so a more stringent level of control was imposed through the establishment of the Spanish and Portuguese stud books. › A Lusitano undergoing training

THE PRIDE OF ANDALUCÍA If the Pure Spanish Horse is the pride of Spain, it is certainly the pride of Andalucía, for so close is the linkage to this part of the country that it is also known as the Andalusian Horse, and yes, as the birthplace of bullfighting and many of Spain’s country traditions, this is the region whose equestrian heritage defines that of the country as a whole. While these can be found across the length and breadth of the region, the area between Seville and Jerez de la Frontera is the epicentre. Jerez, in particular, is the equestrian heart of Andalucía, a region where the traditions of wine, horses and carriage driving come

together within the romantic setting of wine estates. There is even a museum in Jerez dedicated to two of its most beloved icons: sherry and the Andalusian horse, which also forms the focal point of the Feria del Caballo, one of the annual high points on the social calendar in the city and its surroundings. Since then, the e-tron lineup has expanded rapidly and there are now more than half a dozen distinctive models ranging from small saloons and hatchbacks to the very desirable e-tron GT, flagship of the electric fleet. T

he GT, which is also available as an RS highperformance variant, might just be the most handsome full electric mid sized saloon on the market right now. It’s hard to fault its sleek four-door coupé styling and outstanding detailing

around the bodywork. The e-tron GT shares its platform and most of its electric drivetrain architecture with the Porsche Taycan, so there are some seriously performanceoriented genes in this Audi. Technically, the e-tron GT is intriguing because it combines very impressive power with some notably worthwhile safety features. Every e-tron model has all-wheel drive thanks to a pair of electric motors, one at each end. Audi claims a zero to 100 km/h figure of 3.3-seconds for the car, but several media testers have nailed this in less than three seconds. ›

The powertrain used for the e-tron GT range is conventional as far as EVs go, but highly effective. The entry level Quattro has a peak electrical output of 390 kW and 469-horsepower in boost mode and will get you silently to 100 km/h in 4.1-seconds. Top speed is given as 245 km/h. For buyers looking for even more performance from their e-tron GT, the RS version awaits. The dual electric motors on that model produce 440 kW and 646-horsepower in boost and resulting performance figures reflect the power hike – 3.3-seconds to 100 km/h and a top speed of 266 km/h. The RS also boasts four-wheel steering and a two-speed transmission. Most EVs have a direct

110 / JUNE 2022 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

drive single speed gearbox. Batteries may not be the most exciting aspect of any car, but on EVs, they are among the most critical components. The RS e-tron GT uses an 84 kWh lithium ion unit that can offer a range of up to 565-km in mild weather around town, which is impressive even when compared to cutting edge market leaders. They can be charged very quickly from a fast charger – about 23-minutes to 80 per cent of full charge. Using a normal power supply, fully charging an RS e-tron GT is an overnight job. A car like the RS e-tron GT deserves an interior to match its technology levels and Audi delivers. Thankfully

though, the stylists stayed close to Audi tradition, which most fans of the marque will approve of. Audi has always created great interiors with tidy, straightforward instrumentation and an elegant design ethic. Audi emphasises its choice of interior trim materials and the eco-friendly approach designers took. When it comes to cabin ambiance, Audi is tough to beat. Owners who prefer some kind of audio experience rather than near silence when driving their e-tron will like Audi’s available e-sound, which, according to the manufacturer, “immerses the e-tron GT in a contemporary acoustic expression that will define future generations of vehicles.”

BMW has something similar in its new i7 luxury saloon but critics have accurately described some of the sounds as similar to a WW2 British air raid siren. This kind of sonic ambiance is bound to arouse strong ‘love it or hate it’ sentiment among buyers. The e-tron GT models represent a worthwhile addition to the growing number of luxurious, highperformance electric cars on the market today. Their appeal is such that even luxury car shoppers reluctant to take the EV plunge will be persuaded to do so when they experience an RS e-tron GT. e

JENNIFER LOPEZ THE GLASS IS HALF FULL

116 / JUNE 2022 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

Jennifer Lopez commenced 2022 with pretty exciting news for her millions of fans worldwide: in June, she would be the subject of a Netflix documentary called Halftime. The show mainly covers the years 2019 and 2020, when so many watershed moments took place in the singer, dancer, and actor’s life. Its title is testimony to the fact that in 2019, she turned 50. To many, she is a shining example of the importance of mental resilience when it comes to staying young and vibrant. Far from slowing down or taking a backseat to upcoming stars, J-Lo is taking centre stage, and she plans on being around for at least another 50 years. WORDS MARISA CUTILLAS PHOTOGRAPHY SHUTTERSTOCK

IN HER SHOES Production has been hushhush about Halftime. It will undoubtedly be one of the most viewed Netflix shows of the year, for audiences have always been curious about the person that lies behind the performance powerhouse we have become so accustomed to. Little is known about J-Lo because she has always been successful at keeping her emotions close to her chest. In interviews with even the most skillful of journalists, she has been professional and friendly, but her answers have always been work-oriented, and she has hardly ever said more than a few

words about her relationships or her children. Halftime will be giving us a little more insight into her personal challenges and victories, which is befitting considering the fact that her recent film, Marry Me, reveals the loneliness that often lies

behind fame and fortune. The producers have hinted that the new documentary will cover the way she tries to balance being a mom and an artist, her journey as a Latina artist, and one of the performances of her lifetime: the 2020 Halftime show, which she performed alongside Shakira. › WWW.ESSENTIALMAGAZINE.COM / 117

THE YEAR IT ALL CAME TOGETHER It is funny how most of us look back on our 20s and 30s with nostalgia. It’s easy to forget the insecurity that may have led us to make mistakes we wouldn’t repeat in our maturity. Equally risible is the myth that by the time we are 40, we are expected to have it all worked out. There are still so many lessons to learn, flaws to work on, strengths to leverage. J-Lo says it herself, explaining that it wasn’t until she turned 50 that she started to feel like everything was in its right place. In an interview with The New York Times, she said that 2019 was the year in which “everything I had worked for in movies, music, and fashion just started happening.”

DEFYING EXPECTATIONS Many of the J-Lo’s most daring moves were made recently.

back to CONTENTS

A good example is her breakthrough role in Lorene Scafaria’s Hustlers. You may recall that Jennifer played Ramona – a character based on real-life stripper-turnedscammer/entrepreneur, Samantha Barbash. True to form, J-Lo went the extra mile, learning how to pole dance and showing off her acting chops, which are often underrated. If you thought she couldn’t act, check out Bordertown, her 2007 film about the alarming number of female homicides in Ciudad Juárez. The fact that the media continues to mainly see her as a sex symbol, harping on incessantly about her body and especially her booty, reveals a refusal to acknowledge her undeniable talent. Halftime hopes to reveal more about the work and passion that goes behind her decades-long domination of the pop kingdom.

118 / JUNE 2022 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

The same year also saw J-Lo receive the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s Fashion Icon Award and walking the catwalk at Milan Fashion Week donning what is arguably her most famous outfit: that green Versace jungle dress that has become one of the brand’s top-selling pieces, in no small part thanks to Ms. Lopez.

BENNIFER IS BACK

One aspect of J-Lo’s life that we hope will be touched upon in Halftime is Bennifer. This year, after just a few months of dating, Ben Affleck popped the question to the diva with a rare green diamond valued at between €4.8 and €9.6 million. Because the relationship is so new, the documentary may have just missed out on covering it. However, Halftime will hopefully make some type of mention of the rekindled relationships that took us by surprise. Earlier this year, she told People, “I feel so lucky and happy and proud to be with him. It’s a beautiful love story that we got a second chance.”

120 / JUNE 2022 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

A SUPERBOWL HALFTIME SHOW TO REMEMBER As its title suggests, Halftime will feature J-Lo’s much-publicised Superbowl show. You may recall that she not only performed many of her greatest hits (including Jenny from the Block and On the Floor) but also sang a duet alongside her daughter, Emme. If you have never heard Emme sing, let me tell, you – the girls got pipes! Her voice is a logical result of being the daughter of not only J-Lo but also Marc Anthony, arguably the most acclaimed male voice in popular Latino music. Her range, power, and control already surpass those of her

mum, though whether she will dedicate her professional life to music remains to be seen. As J-Lo told Extra TV, when she asks Emme to join her onstage, “it’s not about putting her out in the spotlight, it’s about doing things together that bond us. I don’t

put her in everything, she’s not going to work professionally – a lot of people are asking me that. It’s something that we connect on, is singing.” i Halftime is scheduled for release on June 8. www.netflix.com

HOT NEW

MOVIES

Jurassic World Dominion is one of the month’s hottest releases, with many families with dinosaur-loving kids ready to experience the thrill of seeing these extinct creatures come to life once again on the screen. Marisa Cutillas brings you this and more must-view films in June.

JURASSIC WORLD DOMINION

» Director: Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World) » Genre: Adventure » Actors: Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Neill Four years after the destruction of the island of the dinosaurs by a volcano in eruption, the reptiles are now free, and they live and hunt alongside human beings. The world is forced to adapt to the ‘ecological disaster’ that began when a group of scientists decided to give life to a once-extinct species. This time, humankind is just another species that is in danger of extinction.

ELVIS

» Director: Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge) » Genre: Drama » Actors: Tom Hanks, Austin Butler, Olivia DeJonge Many films have been made about ‘The King’ but this time, the focus is on the complicated relationship that Elvis had with his manager, Colonel Tom Parker. Elvis and Parker worked together for two decades (from 1955 to 1977, the year of Elvis’ death). Parker aimed to take Elvis’ status beyond that of ‘teen sensation’. He was responsible for enrolling him in the army, overseeing his Hollywood film deals, and shaping his Las Vegas comeback. He benefitted greatly from Elvis’ talent, making a 50 per cent commission on some deals.

» Director: Angus MacLane » Genre: Animation » Voices: Chris Evans, James Brolin, Taika Waititi Buzz Lightyear has always been one of the most attention-catching characters in Toy Story. Finally, the spotlight will be shining on him in this adventurous new film. Lightyear gets into a rocket ship with the aim of spending just four minutes in space. Instead, he is stranded in a strange, hostile land for almost 63 years. » Director: Joseph Kosinski » Genre: Science Fiction » Actors: Miles Teller, Chris Hemsworth, Jurnee Smollett Spiderhead is set in the near future, when convicts are offered the chance to volunteer as medical subjects in the hope of shortening their sentence. TO CATCH THIS MONTH There are so many top-quality series this month. Marisa Cutillas brings you a list of favourites that are as highly praised by critics as by audiences.

THE DROPOUT

Disney+

» Genre: Biography / Drama » Creator: Elizabeth Meriwether (New Girl) » Actors: Amanda Seyfried, Naveen Andrews, Michaela Watkins How could a 19-year-old Stanford dropout convince some of the world’s most powerful individuals to invest $9 billion in a sham blood testing company? The Dropout is the true story of fraudster Elizabeth Holmes – a brilliant, dynamic, but ultimately unqualified entrepreneur who fooled the world into thinking that one tiny machine could test for a variety of conditions using just one drop of blood. “This is what happens when you work to change things. First they think you’re crazy, then they fight you, and then all of a sudden you change the world,” she told the press, never coming good on her promises. 128 / JUNE 2022 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

SEVERANCE

Apple TV+

» Genre: Science Fiction / Thriller » Creator: Dan Erickson (in his debut series) » Actors: Adam Scott, Britt Lower, Patricia Arquette, John Turturro, Zach Cherry It’s been called a mash-up of Minority Report and The Office. Severance has been touted as no less than a masterpiece and currently has a 98 per cent critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The premise is simple and intriguing. If you were given the chance to completely sever your work life from your personal life (including your memories, thoughts, and emotions), would you? Or does severance amount to the abuse of the ‘other’ you? The series is a homage to workers’ rights and a damning criticism of capitalism and its capacity to annihilate human beings’ freedom, health, and happiness.

It is a romantic, sweeping, epic tale of a Korean family who immigrate to Japan. The series contains a vast ensemble of characters who encounter discrimination, stereotyping, and other challenges. The events take place between 1910 and 1989, spanning the Japanese occupation of Korea and World War II.

» Genre: Teen Drama / Comedy » Creator: Alice Oseman (in her debut series) » Actors: Joe Locke, Kit Connor, Olivia Colman I was recommended the series, Hearstopper, by a Twitter friend and what began as a “This looks okay but a bit teeny and light” viewing experience soon turned into a binge session that lasted until the very last episode. Heartstopper is a lovely, light-hearted, yet emotion-packed show centred on a group of highschool students who are in the midst of working out their sexuality, friendships, and abilities. A heart-warming escape based on the best-selling graphic novels by Alice Oseman.

» Genre: Documentary » Director: Amanda Micheli (Vegas Baby) Jennifer López will be turning 53 this year, but she very much defies stereotypical notions of what ‘middle age’ is all about. Her new documentary, Halftime, is about two things: the many things she achieved in the first half of her life, and her famous Superbowl half-time show, which raked in a whopping 221 million views on YouTube. At the event, Jennifer pole danced, belted out her greatest hits, and performed alongside her daughter, Emme, to make a political statement about the border crisis. e

Sally Blackshaw has made a name for herself not only as a skilled interior designer, but also as a specialist in modernising and developing older properties in prime Marbella locations such as Las Brisas. WORDS MICHEL CRUZ PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF BLACKSHAW INTERIOR DESIGN

A

mong the large portfolio of interior design projects created by Sally Blackshaw in villas, penthouses, apartments and also commercial venues across the greater Marbella area over the past years, is also an important and growing collection of beautifully styled large-scale building projects, often consisting of older properties, usually in the finest frontline golf and beachfront or country club locations the region has to offer. Sally has never shied away from large projects, focusing early on not just on interior design but also entire renovation and rebuilding projects. “I love the process and have built up a great deal of experience in it,” says Sally, who works with a consolidated team of highly skilled and creative collaborators, ranging from builders, technical engineers and architects to landscapers, lighting and home automation experts, technicians and craftsmen who make bespoke furnishings and help her to create beautiful, made-to-measure solutions for one-off homes of distinction. ›

The result is a streamlined redevelopment to decoration service that includes the sourcing and perfect, key-ready delivery of a fantastic new Marbella home, complete with licensing. “It’s an efficient, effective process and we’re very familiar with the practical and business sides of development, but we stand out by offering bespoke quality and added value, in addition to taking away stress from owners/investors and managing the project for them.” Those familiar with renovation

and redevelopment work know exactly how much creativity, organisation, planning skills and expertise are required. As a result, more and more of her clients are therefore requesting not just an interior makeover of their Marbella property but a complete transformation of an existing home. This has become an increasingly important part of the Marbella property market, partly thanks to the fact that older homes often occupy the choicest locations, and also because there

is currently a shortage of modern properties ready to move into. The result of this upgrading and modernising of older properties is in many ways the best of both worlds, with large plots and spacious interiors adding to top locations and delightful elements of Mediterranean architecture that give these newly rebuilt homes lots of character and charm along with the latest amenities and technological features such as Domotic home automation systems.

VILLA AURA – GODDESS OF THE BREEZE Las Brisas, the exclusive residential area that skirts the renowned championship golf course of the same name, lies at the heart of what is perhaps Marbella’s leading suburb, Nueva Andalucía. Tucked into the peaceful street near the luxurious Las Brisas clubhouse is Villa Aura, the ‘Goddess of the Breeze’ – a fitting name for a property situated within a leafy suburb whose Spanish name – Las Brisas – relates to the gentle sea breezes that caress this part of Marbella. Having experience in sourcing, redeveloping and selling properties with investors and property owners, Sally found this gem in Las Brisas and realised its potential to become a beautiful family residence or second home in a top location. Initially, this older property situated between tall pine trees and with picture book views to La Concha Mountain seemed somewhat tired, but Sally saw what could be achieved here and entered into a joint venture with the owner to develop the property, not just refurbish and decorate it, but substantially redesign and reconfigure it as well as fitting the latest comforts and décor. ›

Space and style surround the property

The home created in the process is a stylish contemporary villa that offers lots of visual and sensory beauty spots inside and out. Sleek white lines are given extra detail by hand-cut stone walls that were painstakingly positioned to add both visual and practical value to the house. The front door opens on to an open-plan living area flooded with natural light. Its modern high-spec kitchen, to the right, looks out over the terrace and immaculate lawn that descends towards the pool deck.

Divided into two intercommunicating spaces, the living area is ideal for relaxing and entertaining while the children watch a movie or sports enthusiasts the match. From here, doors open to a large terrace and lawn inviting you to sit, relax and enjoy a meal in the fresh air. The garden, split over two levels, offers a wonderful sense of peace and privacy, and it exudes a very positive ambience enhanced by Sally’s decorative touches and design flair.

PRIVACY IN THE HEART OF MARBELLA Steps lead down to an even more secluded pool and deck area surrounded by manicured mature hedges, tall trees and natural stone walls. This sophisticated poolside space features pre-installation for an outdoor kitchen/barbecue, and indeed, with this villa Sally has created a wonderful canvas upon which the new owner can add their own style, amenities and details with the greatest of ease. “We love creating the framework for a lifestyle that the resident fills in themselves,

Modern style and comfort in a top location

according to their own taste and wishes,” says Sally. This is also true of the home’s décor, which is not only attractive, refined and functional, but also designed to outlast the coming and going of trends and fashions. “These, by definition, tend to have a limited shelf life, so I find greater value in creating a more timeless decorative style that feels contemporary

and fresh but ages well and doesn’t require regular updating or changing.” This sounds sensible, but requires the trained eye of a skilled designer to pull off. The lower floor of Villa Aura contains the first of four bedroom suites, situated beyond the modern kitchen and laundry – whose appliances can be set to work remotely using Wi-Fi.

This year has seen some bold changes in bridal fashion as designs become less uniform, aiming to reflect not only sophisticated feminine individuality but the spirit of different generations, ethnicity and outlook on life. While traditional gowns will always remain popular, brides now also prioritise sustainability. Bridal suits, separates, minis and silk slipon dresses are set to translate easier to post-wedding life and even allow for a second or third wedding look throughout that special day. Here is a selection of some interesting designs from 2023 collections.

EL REFUGIO DEL BURRITO A SAFE HAVEN FOR DONKEYS PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF EL REFUGIO DEL BURRITO

168 / JUNE 2022 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

They’re longeared, velvety, and affectionate, and they have been the subject of everything from legendary poems to animations. Donkeys are some of the cutest creatures on the planet, and it is devastating to think that so many of them are abandoned and mistreated. Thankfully, across Spain, there are caring groups who have set up sanctuaries where donkeys can thrive, socialise, and receive the care they need. One of these havens is El Refugio del Burrito, which comprises two centres – one in Badajoz and the other in Fuente de Piedra, Málaga. The refuge’s work is crucial and, at times, a matter of urgency. There are days in which dozens of donkeys are abandoned and by the time the sanctuary is notified, many may need intensive care. This is where you can help – by making donations and spreading the word about this special place.

UK TIES

El Refugio del Burrito is a subsidiary of The Donkey Sanctuary – a UK charity that has been working to protect mules and donkeys for over five decades. The ultimate goal of this organisation is to create a world where donkeys and mules live free from suffering; one in which their contribution to humankind is fully valued. The refuge also investigates cases of abuse or neglect, and attends to public complaints concerning donkeys and mules. It is actively involved in causes that encourage the application and improvement of existing laws regarding animal welfare and the promotion of awareness campaigns and education about responsible equine ownership and expert care.

BUILDING GREATER AWARENESS

The refuge educates owners, veterinarians, farriers and other professionals and associations on donkey and mule care, sharing The Professional Handbook of the Donkey. This and other publications provide a wealth of information on an array of topics – including nutrition, oral health, wound management, foot care, common infections, and nursing care.

WHAT A DONKEY NEEDS

The team at El Refugio del Burrito provides information on how to boost donkeys’ physical and mental health. It is important to earn the trust of these loyal animals, provide them with a wide range of activities that mentally stimulate them, and make sure they have enough exercise. It is also relevant to remember that in their natural environment, donkeys can spend up to 16 hours a day roaming over varied landscapes in search of food and watering holes. If you are caring for domesticated donkeys, give them enough space to roam, and provide them with different zones in which to graze.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

The most meaningful way you can help is via donations. Did you know that with just €3, you can buy a donkey the medicine it needs for seven days, or that €5 covers the cost of feeding one donkey with hay for seven days? You can make donations via Visa and Mastercard, Paypal, EURO cheque, or set up a standing order with your bank so that a monthly amount gets sent to the refuge. If you want to make a regular commitment, consider adopting a donkey for just €5 a month.

If you wish to take a donkey home as a pet, you will need to have the right set-up. For instance, donkeys require a minimum of 250m2 of land to graze. A Donkey Welfare Advisor will discuss this and other matters with you so that the move is seamless. You can invest time in one or more donkeys by becoming an ‘exclusive adopter and protector’ of one or more donkeys, visiting them often and taking an active interest in them. You can also leave part of your legacy to the refuge, or simply make donations in kind. The refuge always needs items like blankets, rakes and shovels, brushes, combs, and leggings for children (size eight to 10). The next time a loved one has a birthday or special occasion, consider giving them items from the refuge’s gift shop, so you can kill two birds with one stone. Do not hesitate to report any instances of donkey cruelty if you witness it. The website has a checklist you can complete online or post to the refuge, and you can also call the team directly. If possible, take photographs of the donkeys and landmarks, so the refuge can act quickly. i www.elrefugiodelburrito.com WWW.ESSENTIALMAGAZINE.COM / 169

TOO FACED TWO MINDS, ONE VISION

170 / JUNE 2022 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

STILL GOOD FUN

If you are the type of shopper who is motivated by beautiful packaging, appealing fonts, and colourful shade ranges, then head to Too Faced the next time you need a little mood lift. Open the testers and smell them, try them out, and discover newly released products. For a bit of sparkling unicorn magic, check out their Diamond Light Highlighter, which shines in all the pastel colours you could think of – baby pink, powder blue, lemon yellow, and light gold.

Call me a hopeless romantic, but I always find it a little sad when groundbreaking makeup companies are bought off by conglomerates. Currently, Estée Lauder owns a number of beauty and skincare companies – including La Mer, Origins, M.A.C., Clinique, and Bobbi Brown. In 2016, it also acquired Too Faced – the playful, artistic company founded in 1998 by cosmetics-obsessed couple, Jerrod Blandino and Jeremy Johnson. If you were a fan of the company before the big takeover, then you probably noticed that the changeover was seamless. Too Faced has continued to present its products in arty packaging, and to release cutting-edge collections that break new ground in terms of scent, look, texture, and long-lasting goodness. WORDS MARISA CUTILLAS DREAMING BIG It is, perhaps, dramatically fitting that Jerrod and Jeremy’s company should have become part of the prestigious Estée Lauder group. Before founding Too Faced, they worked behind an Estée Lauder counter. It was during this time that they liaised with customers and discovered the transformative power of makeup. For Jerrod and Jeremy, the goal was to build “a serious makeup brand that knows how to have fun.” With “little more than a credit card and a dream,” they brought something new to the industry – a fun, cruelty-free, brand with tongue-in-cheek product names and lively packaging, backed by topquality, highly-pigmented lip tints, eyeshadows, blushes, and more. In 2015, Jerrod and Jeremy sold a majority stake in the company to a private equity firm, General Atlantic. This deal quickly tripled the value of the company and in 2016, Estée Lauder purchased the brand for a cool $1.45 billion. The couple

recently announced that effective June 30, 2022, they will be leaving the brand and company to pursue new entrepreneurial opportunities.

THE LIP INJECTION REVOLUTION Every brand has its star product – one that celebrities and models rave about, causing it to skyrocket. In Too Faced’s case, that item was Lip Injection – a ‘plumping revolution’ that enabled wearers to sport a fuller pout instantly.

UNIQUE PACKAGING In 2006, Too Faced began packaging their eyeshadow products in paper packaging bearing gorgeous vintage illustrations that harked back to the pin-up era. There was a wide array of illustrations for different products, and today, these original palettes are considered collectibles.

PAMPERING THE SENSES Soon after, the company launched Chocolate Soleil Matte Bronzer, which

is made with real cocoa powder. If you love yummy-smelling products, then you will feel like a kid in a candy shop when you visit Too Faced’s stand at Sephora. The Sweet Peach palette is just one of many scented products whose fresh, fruity aroma is to-die-for!

SEXY NAMES In the early 2010s, the brand released some of its coolest-sounding and most successful products, including Better Than Sex Mascara (an ultralengthening and voluminising mascara) and the Born This Way foundation, a natural-looking base that offers great coverage. In 2019, it launched the Hangover Skincare line, featuring an SPF 25 moisturiser, an ultra-nourishing night cream, a hydrating serum, and more. For ultimate oil control this summer, I recommend the Peach Mist Setting Spray, which smells like natural peach and keeps your makeup smooth and oil-free even on the sunniest days. ›

TWO INNOVATIVE TREATMENTS FOR

DEPRESSION

Depression is one of the most common mental conditions in the world, affecting approximately 630,000 men and 1.5M women in Spain alone. The arrival of the pandemic has made matters worse, with the World Health Organisation reporting a 25 per cent rise in both depression and anxiety across the globe. SHA Wellness Clinic in Alicante, which specialises in integrative health and wellbeing, recently informed the press of two cutting-edge technological treatments that are the buzzword in the treatment of depression. Developed by NASA and the Harvard Medical School, the treatments (Brain Photobiomodulation and Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation) have shown great promise. Read on to discover more about these technologies and how they may help you or someone you love reduce the symptoms of depression. TRANSLATION MARISA CUTILLAS

174 / JUNE 2022 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

BRAIN PHOTOBIOMODULATION Photobiomodulation (PBM therapy), also known as lowlevel laser therapy, involves applying red and near infrared light to neural tissue to boost the oxygenation of brain cells, improve cell metabolism, and reduce inflammation. The aim is to improve general functioning and boost energy levels and mental wellbeing. PBM activates neuronal mitochondria, whose job is to generate cellular energy and improve cognitive abilities. The treatment is currently being employed to treat numerous neurological, neurodegenerative, and psychological issues, including depression, anxiety, traumatic lesions, and cerebrovascular accidents.

TRANSCRANIAL ELECTRICAL STIMULATION Harvard University students are also working on Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS), a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that has yielded satisfying results in treating major depressive disorder. Patients wear a wireless helmet equipped with 39 electrodes that record, evaluate, and modulate electrical activity in the brain in real time and emit very lowintensity electrical discharges.

Bruno Ribeiro, head of the SHA Wellness Cognitive and Emotional Health Unit, explains that “the functioning of neurons is related to neurotransmitters and bioelectrical impulses. We know, for instance, that depression causes an imbalance of impulses in both hemispheres of the brain. In patients with depression, the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex displays abnormally low activity. By applying currents with a precise frequency to specific brain areas, we can modulate this organ’s activity and restore balance.” tDCS improves cortical plasticity. It can be used to improve cognitive performance and treat sleep problems, addictions, epilepsy, apoplexy, neurodegenerative diseases, and depression. It has a high potential to improve recovery from strokes and neurological trauma.

WHAT IS THE SHA WELLNESS CLINIC? The SHA Wellness Clinic is dedicated to helping people live better, longer lives through a global, integrative approach to health. It embraces advanced treatments, specialising in preventive medicine, genetics, and anti-ageing, with a strong

emphasis on balanced, optimal nutrition. The Clinic has an array of health programmes, each of which are catered to different components of health and wellbeing. The programmes are adapted to each client in accordance with their wishes and the criteria of medical and therapeutic specialists. For the SHA team, health isn’t simply the absence of sickness, but an optimal state of physical, mental, and spiritual wellbeing that is in harmony with the environment. It also involves remaining within a healthy weight range and pursuing greater vitality. The Clinic has been open for over a decade and is currently undertaking an international expansion, with two upcoming openings (in Mexico and the UAE). When choosing the locations of the new clinics, the company prioritised factors like the climate, environment, connectivity, and resources. SHA Mexico (set to open in mid2023) is being built in the Mayan Riviera, while SHA Emirates (with an early 2024 completion date) will be situated halfway between Dubai and Abu Dhabi. i www.shawellnessclinic.com

LA RESERVA

CLUB SOTOGRANDE

AND THE MEANING OF `LIVE DIFFERENT’ Sotogrande is in vogue, but especially among those drawn by its classic values of space, understated style, quality of life and a new luxury lifestyle evolving at La Reserva Club. WORDS MICHEL CRUZ

178 / JUNE 2022 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

T

he impressive rise in demand for property seen in Marbella over 2021 was also experienced in Sotogrande, more specifically at La Reserva Club, where signature projects such as The Six superb modern villa mansions at El Mirador sold out and others like The Seven and The Fifteen – all cutting-edge properties designed by worldrenowned architects – took off. A few apartments remain in the first phase of Village Verde, with work starting on the second phase later in the year. Together with luxurious new lakeside homes at Lagoon Villas and other boutique projects currently being designed, they form the basis of an impressive supply of contemporary apartments,

penthouses, villas and indeed mansions in this country club at the heart of Sotogrande. Surrounding it are the beaches, golf courses, racquet clubs and also the equestrian centre, wooded suburbs and the marina of Sotogrande, but La Reserva Club itself forms a ‘resort within a resort’.

THE NEW WORLD OF SOTOGRANDE Much of this success can be put down to a new vision for Sotogrande that has been invested in and worked towards for a decade now, and which is bearing fruit as it increasingly takes shape. The vision is centred upon a way of life in a privileged setting between sea, sand, big skies and rolling green countryside. › WWW.ESSENTIALMAGAZINE.COM / 179

This green oasis surrounded by Spanish country villages has been a haven of understated style for some time now, but Sotogrande is undergoing a gentle transformation. and the factors that make it special. Luxury homes and amenities can, in principle, be built anywhere, but the essence of Sotogrande can’t. For Sotogrande S.A. Chairman, Marc Topiol and his team, these are the foundations upon which the new world of Sotogrande is evolving, and it is a development philosophy built entirely upon quality of life.

SOTOGRANDE AND THE ‘NEW LUXURY’ A lot is said about a new definition of luxury that is based not so much upon opulence and conspicuous consumption as upon time, quality, experiences and special moments spent with those close to you. Nature, well-being

and a healthy, sustainable environment form part of this way of thinking, which also centres upon enjoying those things money can’t buy, or so they say. At La Reserva Club, it buys you elegant country living reimagined. In this way, it offers both a rustic chic country club

environment and a classic resort setting by the sea – increasingly connected to Marbella and the rest of the Costa del Sol but, as they become progressively busy – providing a peaceful, secure and stress-free world in which to enjoy those elements of life that make up the new luxury. The new Sotogrande emerging now is perfectly aligned to it thanks to a focus on quality living first envisaged over a decade ago. ›

Indeed, The Beach, now forms a scenic focal point with facilities such as the lagoon beach pool, kids’ club, swimming pool and deck for grown-ups, a lakeside restaurant, spa, racquet club and boutique by Dolores Cortéz. It is the very embodiment

of a chic, naturally-inspired setting in which to languidly or actively enjoy special moments with the family, including low-impact water sports and themed gastronomic evenings featuring the on-site creations of visiting Michelin-star chefs. This is added to the spa and

trendy-chic deluxe facilities of the SO/ Sotogrande Hotel, the Happiness Desk services available within La Reserva Club and its unique threecourse golf packages. The latter refers to the Happiness Desk’s ability to arrange a playing tour of three of Spain’s most outstanding courses: La Reserva Club, Real Club Valderrama and the Real Club de Sotogrande, to

NEW DEVELOPMENT EXPERTISE It is one of the reasons why the Engel & Völkers offices under the management of José Luís Martínez are chosen by property developers to represent and market their projects. “Our expertise in this segment of the market is vital, as newly built homes now represent the focal point of demand among buyers,” says Lejla, who heads a team with specialist knowledge both in the investment and marketing side of new projects, as on advising buyers what to look out for in the best new homes.

188 / JUNE 2022 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

“For over a decade now, modern new-build properties have been dominating the property sector on the Costa del Sol, so it important to know how to evaluate different new developments, and what to look for when doing so. We have years of market knowledge built on feedback from our clients, so it gives us a clear understanding of what today’s buyers want from their Marbella property and lifestyle, and this is turn is valuable both when designing

new projects and finding people the modern home they have been looking for.” She and her team therefore use this know-how to advise both developers and buyers, building on the accumulated knowledge of client wants and needs, and feeding this back into the design, concept, with a list of amenities and personalised and upgraded features an apartment complex or villa project should have. “Good consultancy work of this kind is based upon knowing the

areas, products, financial and legal aspects, and marketing – but above all understanding your clients.” g ENGEL & VÖLKERS ESTEPONA Shop 1: C.C. TOP QUALITY RADIO IN MARBELLA Marbella-based radio station CHILLI FM has been broadcasting for the past few years, becoming more popular within the community every day. Today we are talking with Kane, who is here to tell us all about Chilli FM. Kane is an entrepreneur and the Chilli brand creator who also has a background in the entertainment industry as a former actor and radio presenter. PHOTOGRAPHY EVA NEILSON, ANASTASIA VISHNICKAYA

Tell us Kane, how was Chilli FM born? Chilli FM was born out of the need for a more local and unique radio station that would reflect the audience and the local community. A radio station has the ability to hold up a mirror to the audience and reflect that vibe, that sense of place, that local attitude. Despite lockdowns and business unrest, the Chilli FM radio station began to broadcast in 2020. The network first started out as a radio station serving the immediate Marbella area from its studios near Puerto

Banús and today, we broadcast over 150 miles along all Spain’s Costa del Sol on multiple connected FM transmitters. Chilli now also streams online internationally across various smart devices. We have apps for smartphone, smart TV and smart speakers, so have the potential of reaching millions of people. Describe your station. Who are your listeners? What kind of music does your station play? Chilli FM is the newest and most exciting FM station on the Costa del Sol, airing a hot adult contemporary music

format. Chilli FM is authentic, colourful and confident. Just like its audience. Chilli listeners are happy, sophisticated and musically aware, who wake up in a good mood and who enjoy life. They love to go out, eat great food and meet like-minded people who want the best things in life. We generally target individuals over 30 and play music from today’s current contemporary artists such as Bruno Mars and Ed Sheeran, mixed with the top tracks and classic hits from the 70s, the 80s and the 90s, therefore appealing to both women and men from 25 to 65.

Do you have more male or female listeners? The majority of the Chilli FM audience are female at about 65%. Women are the movers and shakers in our society and especially in our economy. Did you know that 80% of all retail purchases are made expressly by women, or highly influenced by women. Chilli FM has a female touch to it and reaches this important demographic like no other radio station in the area. And that was all achieved with the help and support of my fiancée Dana. ›

What is the unique value your radio station brings to listener? Firstly, and most importantly, Chilli FM connects to the listener. It’s all about being in the moment, and connecting listeners with their favourite music. Chilli FM takes each listener on a musical journey throughout the day, playing more uplifting songs in the mornings, calmer music at lunchtime and more upbeat hits during the remainder of the day with specially selected tracks for the evening listener. It is important to also give everyone a fluid musical adventure with a seamless flow of great sounding popular music, and not to subject listeners to annoying, uninteresting commercials all day long. That’s why we are popular. Chilli FM entertains them. It’s essential that a radio station sets the mood for an audience, not only with the music it plays but by the imaging and the style and delivery of the announcements. When you hear a well programmed radio station,

192 / JUNE 2022 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

the music flows perfectly and is enhanced by the quality imaging. For those who don’t know what ‘imaging’ means, this signifies the ‘in-show production’ and production techniques. And finally, Chilli FM ‘informs’ listeners. Right now, with informative commercials but very soon we are launching dedicated radio shows covering this subject. Are there any interesting radio shows happening now or on the horizon, and what are they about? Yes, ‘Chilli Shoutouts’. Importantly, Chilli FM is all about the music, the community, what’s on, what’s happening, and where to go. ‘Live’ presenters for various shows begin later this year, but right now we have just launched a radio show called Chilli Shoutouts on Saturday mornings.

Chilli Shoutouts is a dedicated WhatsApp number where listeners can send in a voice message about anything. They can dedicate a song, tell a silly story or anecdote, say happy birthday to someone, virtually anything, and we’ll play their message on the show, followed by the song they wanted. For the first time, radio listeners can create their own show. It's really easy. All you have to do is add the number 717 121 212 to the contacts on your phone, and then WhatsApp us a voice file. Because it was first time an English-speaking show on the Coast offered this type of global audience interaction, the results were astounding. We received an explosion of messages from Chilli listeners from Spain and all over Europe. They were itching to get on the radio!

And finally, what’s the mission of Chilli FM? Our mission is to never stand still, and through dedication, consistency and quality playlists, we aim to deliver the best service and quality content to both our advertisers and our many thousands of listeners. Chilli FM have been innovating right from the start with new ways of delivering quality sound, production tricks and original ideas that have never been heard on the Costa del Sol before. e

Bodegas José Pariente in Valladolid recently celebrated its 25th Anniversary

It used to be said that Spain did not produce good white wines; only the reds were worth bothering with. Those were the days of heavily oaked white riojas, the much fresher Penedès varieties not for all palates - and the limited quantities of more agreeable assortments from northwest Spain that never seemed to be available outside the region. WORDS ANDREW J LINN

DIGNIFYING A WINE REGION

B

y the end of the last century there were several new, emergent, or reinvented bodegas turning out wines that would have been unrecognisable to the older generation. However, Spain has always had its innovators. Miguel Torres SA, today the nation’s largest familyowned bodega, started using stainless steel tanks in the 1980s, and Enrique Fournier changed

228 / JUNE 2022 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

the way the traditional Rioja bodegas practiced winemaking. The late Carlos Falcó, Marqués de Griñón, launched innovative projects in many wine-growing regions, and while Rioja is still possibly the most conservative wine area of them all, even here some bold ‘revolutionaries’ are creating wines as they think they should always have been made. Paco Hurtado, of Riscal, decided

some time ago that most barrelaged Riojas had too much oak, so now, after initial maturation, puts the wine into old casks where the wood effect is not so noticeable. He defiantly uses 40% of Cabernet Sauvignon in his Barón de Chirel, on the basis that his family was using the grape 60 years before there even was a Consejo Regulador to tell producers that they shouldn’t.

But while it is easy to criticise the regulatory councils, they have demonstrated that in the long term their oversight of a region is usually positive. A case in point is Rueda, always a zone known for high production and low prices, without any nationally accepted brands. Cheap and cheerful, fruity, and light. The usual order was and still is ‘Serve me a Ruedito please’, much the same as asking for ‘a Rioja’, a ‘Ribera del Duero’ or a ‘Jerez’. Huge volumes of wine are sold but it is frustrating for the wineries trying to impose a policy of quality over quantity. So how do you change the image of an entire wine region? It has been shown in Galicia, for example, that the first move is to convince drinkers that not all wines should be drunk young. Older wines have a different taste and are more costly, but the difference is like that of chalk and cheese. The campaign to improve the image encapsulated in the phrase ‘Dignify Rueda’, and the establishment of a ’Gran Vino’ category with quality as the priority, has done the rest. To qualify, the vines for the Gran Vino classification must be 30 years old and the production per vine lower than for the regular wine. Well-equipped both mentally and physically for the job of

dignifying Rueda, it was a new generation of young vintners who arrived on the scene in timely fashion. This had the desired effect of putting a previously unexciting area on the map. Today the wines from the foremost Rueda bodegas are appreciated throughout Spain and internationally: Álvarez y Díez, Antaño, Lorenzo Cachazo, Belondrade y Lurton, Felix Sanz, Marqués de Irún, Sanz, Yllera, and José Pariente. This last-mentioned winery, established in 1997, is a fine example of how the region has developed over the last ten years. Martina and Ignacio are third generation winemakers who have studied in other regions and whose priorities since 2009 have revolved around innovation and sustainability.
