EssentialsMAG May 2025 - North Wrexham/Cheshire Magazine
We’ve got the local area covered!
May always brings with it a sense of renewal - longer days, blossoming gardens, and that unmistakable feeling that summer is just around the corner. It’s also a month with two bank holidays, giving many of us a well-earned chance to recharge. With the Early May Bank Holiday (5th May) and the Spring Bank Holiday (26th May), there are two long weekends to look forward to - ideal for getting outside, exploring, or simply putting your feet up with a good read.
This month also marks a significant moment in our history - the 80th anniversary of VE Day on 8th May. It’s a poignant reminder of the courage, sacrifice and resilience of a generation, and many across the UK will take a moment to reflect and commemorate the end of World War II in Europe.
May is full of other national days that bring a smile or spark awareness. From National Walking Month, to Mental Health Awareness Week (12th-18th May), and let’s not forget National Biscuit Day on 29th May - a light-hearted celebration of one of the UK’s favourite snacks!
Have a great month!

If the answer is “yes” then Gresford Sailing Club in Wrexham is inviting you and your family to come and try sailing, paddle boarding or model boating for free between 2nd - 4th May at ‘The Flash’ in Gresford.

This is a nationwide event, which will see thousands of people taking part in sailing and other water-based activities at open days and taster sessions at sailing clubs and centres across the country.
Gresford Sailing Club is proud to have been awarded RYA Community Club of the Year 2024, and we seek to be as inclusive as possible – many of our juniors are supported by parents who are completely new to sailing.
The club was established in 1959, and since then, we have welcomed generations of young people to the club through junior training and local schools – many of whom have returned as adults.
There is an active programme of events throughout the year, which includes weekly model boat racing, junior training, social Sundays (including paddle boarding, sailing
and ‘cook your own’ BBQ ), adult sailing training, club racing, as well as social events such as the annual ‘moonlight sail’, ‘pirates day’ and quiz and chip nights.
We would like to invite the local community to come down and have a go, see what Gresford Sailing Club has to offer and get involved. Who knows you might just get hooked! Sailing can be as physical or relaxing as you want to make it, you can sail with others or on your own, do it competitively or potter about and just enjoy the gentle escape of being outdoors in the elements.

Award Win is a Dream Come True for Inspirational Skin Clinic Founder
By MARIANNE BURRELL, Clinic Manager at Pure Perfection Clinic, Rossett
Receiving a prestigious national award was a “dream come true” for a cancer campaigner who battled back from adversity to grow one of the most successful skin clinics in Wales and the North West. For almost two decades, Sara Cheeney, has been a trailblazer in the UK skincare industry. Owner of Pure Perfection Clinic in Rossett, her hard work was rewarded with the Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner of the Year title at the Aesthetics Awards 2025.
Shannon Kilgariff, editor of Aesthetics, said: “We are delighted to recognise Sara as winner of the Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner of the Year. Our 100 industry-leading judges decide which individuals, clinics and companies shine brightest in UK medical aesthetics. Sara is a more than deserving winner for her valuable contributions to the sector.”
Having won Best Clinic Midlands and Wales at the 2024 ceremony – she and her colleagues will aim for a treble in 2026 by entering the Best Clinic Team category.
“I am completely overwhelmed,” said Sara, who suffered from psoriasis as a teenager and ran Pure Perfection while recovering from breast cancer, “I’ve received several awards over the years, but this one means the most. Many of my peers and mentors, people I respect hugely, have won it. It’s a huge accomplishment and a dream come true after everything I’ve been through. Thank you to my amazing team - I couldn’t have done it without you.”
With almost 500 entries and 900 guests, the ceremony brought together the best in medical aesthetics.
An ambassador for Hydrafacial and UK trainer and key opinion leader for Zo Skin Health - as well as recently completing Cadaver training at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh - Sara is “very deserving of the award,” said Clinic Manager Marianne Burrell.
“This accolade is very personal to Sara. It’s a big deal in the industry and we are thrilled for her. She works tirelessly for Pure Perfection and mentors clinicians UK-wide.”
Sara now teaches for EverLess and Nuvea, furthering her CPD in facial anatomy. “This focus on education keeps us at the forefront of the sector,” added Marianne. “Patient numbers remain strong as people prioritise their health - and we’ll always be here to support them.”

Strength, Serenity and Movement
By HELEN CONWAY
Why May is made for gardening and pilates
May, with its longer days and warmer temperatures, encourages us to embrace life with renewed energy. It’s the time when gardens call for attention - tidying borders, painting fences, clearing greenhousestransforming into a season of physical effort. All of this bending, twisting, lifting, and shifting demands mobility and strength.
And that’s where Pilates proves invaluable. Every year, I hear from clients who spend hours digging, raking, and planting, yet move with ease - free from stiffness and discomfort. It’s a testament to the power of Pilates, and I will never tire of hearing it. Even after teaching for 40 years.
Pilates strengthens functional movement, making everyday activities like squatting, bending, and getting up and down from the ground easier. It builds the strength required for safe lifting and enhances balanceespecially useful for ladders and steps. By working on full-range motion and activating deep stabilizing muscles, Pilates supports the back and shoulders while increasing flexibility, making movement smoother and less stressful.
Beyond its physical benefits, gardening itself is an incredibly rewarding activity.
Research shows that spending time in green spaces lowers blood pressure, improves mood, and enhances mental wellbeing. Gardens provide sanctuary, a place to reconnect with nature, relieve stress, and boost cognitive function.
May 14th marks Garden Day, an opportunity to celebrate outdoor spaces, whether sprawling gardens or balconies adorned with pots. Falling at the close of Mental Health Awareness Week, Garden Day highlights the profound impact that gardening has on our emotional and physical health. Whether you’re tending flowers or vegetables, or simply enjoying time outdoors, your garden becomes a space of tranquility and renewal.
May is a season for movement, mindfulness, and embracing the natural world. Whether through Pilates or gardening, it’s a time to nourish both body and mind, creating strength and serenity for the months ahead.
Bodywork-Pilates was established in 2002. They offer the very best in pilates, yoga and holistic fitness, with over 20 classes a week to choose from in and around Wrexham and Chester.
Award-Winning Local Travel Experts
By DELMAR WORLD in Gresford
Delmar World - Luxury Travel Agency of The Year!
Delmar World - and its sister company Perfect Cruises - are celebrating being crowned ‘Luxury Travel Agency of the Year’ at this year’s TTG LUXURY Awards.
Travel Trade Gazette is the world’s longest established travel industry newspaper and TTG LUXURY is its specialist publication for premium travel professionals, concentrating on the luxury travel sector. Delmar World had to overcome a huge amount of competition to achieve this national accolade: the judges were particularly impressed with the Gold Star customer service and attention to detail, along with the impressive destination and cruise knowledge demonstrated by the entire Delmar World team.
Ann Anglesea, Managing Director, said “The beauty of having a combination of Destination and Cruise knowledge is that we can tailor-make ground arrangements around a cruise itinerary to suit each client’s preferences. To ensure that our clients get the very best advice - rather than the ‘offthe-peg, one-size fits all’ holidays offered by some companies - we offer an appointment service free of charge and love to see our clients in person but, if this is not possible, then we also offer a remote appointment service. We are very proud of this latest in a long line of awards for Delmar World but we are also proud of the fact that, during our 60 years in the travel industry, we have built long-lasting relationships with our clients who continue to recommend us to friends and family”.
Each team member has different specialist areas and has gained personal travel experience of their particular destinations; these include Canada, USA, Australia, New Zealand, Africa and the Far East as well as a full range of Ocean, River and Expedition cruising.
There are so many excellent independent business in our locality, I hope that industry awards like these add credibility and persuade those in our locality that they need not look further afield to get the best service and expertise.

Wrexham Tourism News
By JOE BICKERTON, Tourism Manager, Wrexham County Borough Council
I hope everyone’s enjoying Spring so far and the lighter evenings! I’m writing this having just had a meeting with the organisers of the new international tennis event arriving in Wrexham this year – the Lexus Women’s Open. It’s the largest tennis event in Wales since 1996 and will take place between 19th - 26th October at the refurbished Wrexham Tennis & Padel Centre (which has some incredible facilities!) and boost hospitality locally too.
National Eisteddfod
We have some other big events coming to Wrexham this year, most notably the National Eisteddfod between 2nd - 9th August, which will welcome thousands of new visitors to our area and provides a great opportunity to cross-promote our wider area for return visits in the future.
We’ll be there with a ‘Wrexham village’ on-site, promoting the best of Wrexham alongside our Museum, Business support team, and other local tourism businesses such as Stori Brymbo, Bangor-on-Dee races and many more!
We’ve also just had some good news regarding funding, as Welsh Government have awarded us money to undertake several key pieces of work within our tourism plan this year.
We’ll be working closely with Transport for Wales to provide a better visual welcome at General Station and navigation into town, whilst we’ll also be installing new visitor information boards at the station and at elsewhere in the County.
At Trevor Basin, the public toilets, which are a crucial part of the visitor welcome, will also be getting a full upgrade. The remainder of the funding will allow us to install a significant new piece of public art that you will want a photograph with later this year! More on that in my next column.
Tourism Ambassador Scheme
Finally, our tourism ambassador numbers continue to increase and we are now nearly halfway to achieving our target of 1,000 official ambassadors by 2026.
To become an ambassador, it’s free of charge, and takes around 1.5hrs with three short modules helping you – or your staff – get to know more about the area in which we live and work.

Gardening Tips and Advice
May - Summer’s on its Way!
As bulbs fade and herbaceous borders grow, it is now clear that summer is approaching. Sowing and planting out bedding can begin, depending on regional weather variations, and you can take softwood cuttings. It's also time to get back into the lawn mowing regime, as the lawn will be loving the warmer temperatures this month brings.
TOP 10 JOBS TO DO IN THE GARDEN THIS MONTH
1. Watch out for late frosts and protect tender plants.
2. Earth up potatoes, and promptly plant any still remaining.
3. Plant out summer bedding at the end of the month (except in cold areas).
4. Water early and late, recycle water when possible.
5. Regularly hoe off weeds.
6. Open greenhouse vents and doors on warm days.
7. Mow lawns weekly.
8. Check for nesting birds before clipping hedges.
9. Lift and divide overcrowded clumps of daffodils and spring-flowering bulbs.
10. Watch out for viburnum beetle and lily beetle grubs.
@Wrexham Pollinator Trail
Wrexham’s butterflies get a boost thanks to local support
Great news for our pollinators – more spaces across Wrexham are being set aside to support butterflies, bees and other important insects!
We’re delighted to announce that The Griffin Inn Public House and The Golden Lion, both in Rossett, and Hotel Wrexham have pledged to leave areas of land on their sites to sow native wildflowers. These patches will become vital feeding and resting spots along the growing Wrexham Pollinator Trail.
We're also really pleased to share that Rossett Community Council will be planting a dedicated wildflower area along Chester Road, by the side of the park, adding another important link in the chain.
If you’re a local business or organisation and would like to pledge a small area of land to grow wildflowers and support our pollinators, we’d love to hear from you! Every bit of space helps us build a stronger, more connected trail for Wrexham’s wildlife.
A huge thank you also goes out to Holt Community Gardeners, who generously donated 95 packs of native wildflower seeds to help spread the buzz. These were made available from two locations in town and have already been snapped up by local residents – how amazing is that?
If you missed out, don’t worry – we’re working on sourcing more seeds to give away soon, so keep an eye out for updates.
How can you get involved?
You can support Wrexham’s pollinators right from your own garden. Try planting butterflyfriendly flowers like buddleia, lavender
Leaving a patch of your lawn unmown also helps, giving shelter and allowing wild plants to grow naturally. With the weather being so dry lately, it’s a great idea to leave out a shallow bowl of water for butterflies - just add a few pebbles so they have somewhere safe to perch while they drink. Every small space makes a difference!
BUTTERFLY OF THE MONTH
WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR IN MAY: BRIMSTONE
When this butterfly roosts among foliage, the angular shape and the strong veining of their wings closely resembles leaves. The wings of the female are very pale green, almost white, males have yellow-green underwings and yellow upperwings.
Please get involved, and follow us on Facebook: @Wrexham Pollinator Trail
British Asparagus with Hollandaise Sauce
British green asparagus is arguably the best in the world and has a short season from mid April to early June. The thicker the stems the better! Snap the stems off near the base where they naturally break and trim the bottoms. The woody ends can be used to make stock. Hollandaise is the perfect rich buttery accompaniment for asparagus and although it can seem daunting, it’s very easy to make.
WATCH MY TUTORIAL VIDEO
I’ve created a step-by-step video showing you exactly how to make this recipe - and it’s now live on my brand new YouTube channel, ‘Adam’s World of Cooking’.
Simply scan this QR code to watch:
INGREDIENTS:
2 bunches British green asparagus
3 egg yolks
200g unsalted butter, melted luke warm
2 tbsp white wine vinegar
1 bay leaf
1 sprig thyme
2 black peppercorns
Juice of 1/4 lemon
Salt
VIDEO TUTORIAL
METHOD:
Put vinegar, bay leaf, peppercorns and thyme in a pan and reduce by two thirds.
Add vinegar reduction to 3 egg yolks. Add a tablespoon of water and a pinch of salt.
Whisk egg yolks over very gently simmering water until they increase in volume and begin to thicken. Too much temperature will result in scrambled egg!
Melt butter to luke warm and gently whisk on to the egg yolks gradually, ensuring butter is emulsified before continuing to add.
Once butter is incorporated add lemon juice to taste.
Boil asparagus in rapidly boiling salted water for 2-3 minutes depending on thickness. Asparagus is best served al dente.
Drain asparagus well and coat generously with hollandaise sauce.

Seasonal Treats in May
Let’s celebrate balmy spring days with four of the best British savoury spring ingredients.
Spring lamb
Succulent spring lamb is a Great British classic. Keep it simple to make the most of its tender, mild flavour and pair with earthy seasonal ingredients like boiled Jersey Royals or roasted aubergines or asparagus. While leg is the default family roast joint, fattier shoulder is often tastier and definitely cheaper.
Radishes
Traditionally, we like our radishes small and peppery in Britain. Use them simply sliced or chopped in salads, or try them cut in half and dipped in a little salt or salted butter, which compliments their nutty taste. You can also eat the leaves, which are slightly pungent, like rocket. Radishes are quick to grow, so if you’d like a home-grown supply, get planting now and you’ll be enjoying your own crop by the time our June issue pops through your letterbox!
Herring
The Atlantic herring, with a beautiful silvery skin and cream-coloured flesh, has been prized right across Europe for centuries, with records of salting recipes (think rollmops) dating back over a thousand years. It’s often
sold smoked, as kippers or bloaters. If you’re buying fresh, look out for red rather than brown gills and bright eyes, and eat within 48 hours, as this is a fish that doesn’t keep well.
Wild things: Fennel
Growing profusely in fields and hedgerows, wild fennel is a common sight in the English countryside, although it’s not actually a native species but was brought here by the Romans as a culinary herb. Not to be confused with poisonous species like hemlock, its delicate green fronds have a distinct fennel smell. Finely chop and use in casseroles, in stock for gravy or fresh as a herbal tea, where it will impart a sweet aniseed flavour. The pretty yellow edible flowers, which appear in July, are wonderful in salads or as a garnish, while the dried, crushed flower heads give chicken, pork or fish an aromatic kick when used as a seasoning.
May Shopping List
Asparagus, Aubergine, Cabbages, Carrots, Cauliflower, Cucumber, Horseradish, Jersey Royals, Kale, Leeks, Lettuce, Radishes, Rocket, Shallot, Spinach, Spring Onions, Raspberries, Rhubarb, early season Strawberries, Brown Crab, Herring, Sea Trout, Turbot.

Protect Your Loved Ones With Tax-Efficient Planning
By WARREN HADLOW
Nobody can predict your future, but you can prepare for it. We insure our cars, our homes, even our pets, but protecting yourself, your standard of living and your health can be far more valuable.
What types of protection are there?
There are different types of protection insurance suited to what, or whom, you need to protect, and for how long. The most widely available are:
• Income protection pays a percentage of your income so you can continue to cover bills and outgoings, if you’re unable to work through illness.
• Critical Illness Cover pays out a lump sum if you suffer a serious illness such as cancer or a heart attack.
• Life Assurance pays out a lump sum on death. If the policy is written in trust, the pay-out will be free from IHT. For most people, this will help avoid delays during probate.
Protecting your income protects your family
Income protection is more than just a safety net. If you’re self-employed, you have responsibility for your health and welfare, as well as your pension.
Losing an income can have a huge impact on a family. An Income Protection plan replaces a percentage of your income if you can’t earn, meaning you wouldn’t need to raid your savings to pay the bills and you can protect your longerterm savings and investments too.
Your protection checklist
• Would your family be financially secure if you couldn’t work, suffered a serious illness or died?
• Do you have a ‘rainy day’ cash fund that you could live on for six months?
• Would you be able to afford to keep up payments for the family home if you or your partner lost an income?
• Would you have to cut back or dip into savings to keep afloat?
• Would your older children manage if they were unable to pay their mortgage? Would you be able to step in to help?
If any of your answers were “no”, then you may not be properly insured. A financial adviser can help you decide on a proper level of protection.
Please note that there is no pay-out of family income protection if you die after the term of the policy, nor will you get your money back.
Life Assurance vs. Life Insurance
Life Assurance pays out a tax-free lump sum on death, whenever that occurs, and can be useful if you’re anticipating an Inheritance Tax bill.
Life Insurance covers you for a fixed term and is useful when covering a financial commitment that will reduce or end in the future, such as a mortgage, or school fees.
Is Critical Illness Cover needed?
Given that we are all living longer, a critical illness policy may be one of the most important for your future financial resilience. It’s also important to consider that we are more likely to suffer a serious illness than we are to die. The cover can be set for a specific time period or for your whole life.
Why protection matters
Taking out life assurance or critical illness protection could potentially be the most lifechanging pieces of financial planning you’ll ever do. Feel free to get in touch if you’d like to discuss your protection.
The levels and bases of taxation, and reliefs from taxation, can change at any time and are generally dependent on individual circumstances.

Legal Advice

Do you really want to give away your hardacquired assets to the state?
Despite there being so much press these days about the importance of making a Will, there are still a surprising number of people who do not have one.
Reasons often given are: ‘I’m too young’, ‘I don’t have any family’, ‘When I’m dead I won’t care what happens to my assets’, ‘Surely everything will just automatically pass to my partner of 25 years’.
None of these things are sensible reasons as to why you should not make a Will, especially the latter as it is a fallacy that anything you own will automatically pass to someone to whom you are not married or in a civil partnership with.
So, ask yourself this: ‘Do you really want the law to decide who will inherit your hardearned money and who will deal with the administration of your estate?’ And if you have no living relatives, do you really want the government to claim your estate?
The reality is that if you die without making a Will and you have no known family, you will die intestate and your property will become ownerless, or, using the official term, ‘bona
vacantia’. Your unclaimed estate details will then be stored for up to 12 years on a government database. If, after that time, your estate remains unclaimed by someone who can prove they are related to you, then everything you have worked for and accumulated will pass to the Crown.
Incredibly it is estimated that there are currently around 10,000 unclaimed estates on the government database and over the last ten years the duchy has collected more than £60m in bona vacantia revenues.
If you don’t have any family, or if you do have family but don’t wish to leave anything to them, why not consider leaving your assets to a charity, or charities, of your choice?
And even if, for some reason, you would like your possessions to be given to the Crown when you die, then it would be more cost effective to make this clear in a Will, than to leave your estate unclaimed for over a decade.
So, if you don’t have a Will now, you really should see a solicitor and make one.

We are thrilled to announce that Tattoo Cymru is returning to North Wales in 2025, bringing a brand-new show to the prestigious William Aston Hall in Wrexham.
This exciting event proudly showcases iconic acts from Wales and across the United Kingdom, blending music, culture, and celebration. As always, we remain committed to honouring those who have served, with a special pre-show exhibition supporting veterans' charities and military associations.
Audiences can expect a vibrant mix of returning favourites from last year’s show, along with some thrilling new additions. Among the highlights is a specially commissioned performance by our Lone Drummer, who has been invited to join the world-renowned Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo Performers in 2025 - a true honour and a must-see moment. Also making a powerful debut is a moving performance of songs from Operation Mincemeat - the critically acclaimed West End and Broadway sensation. The line-up also includes the world-famous Fron Male Voice Choir, Massed Bands, Pipes and Drums, dazzling precision drill displays, and energetic performances of Welsh and Irish dancing. The evening will culminate in a spectacular Victory Celebration Finale, as the entire cast comes together to honour both VE Day and VJ Day in a stirring tribute to peace and remembrance.

Screening is a process of identifying people who may be at increased risk of a disease or condition. The uptake of screening in the local area is approximately 75%. Health screening is important and can ensure that individuals receive the necessary medical treatment in a timely manner. Public Health Wales offers the following screening programmes across Wales:
Diabetic Eye Screening Wales looks for diabetic eye disease before any symptoms show. Diabetic eye disease can lead to permanent sight loss if not found. If you have been diagnosed with diabetes, are aged 12 or over, you will be invited for diabetic eye screening.
Cervical Screening Wales. Cervical screening can prevent cervical cancer from developing or pick it up at an early stage. The cervical screening (smear) test will look for high-risk types of Human Papillomavirus (HPV). Finding cell changes can prevent cervical cancer from developing. Women and people with a cervix aged between 25 and 64 are eligible for cervical screening in Wales.
Breast Test Wales looks for breast cancer before symptoms show. This involves taking mammograms, which are x-rays of the breast. Women living in Wales, aged from 50 up to 70 are invited for breast screening every three years.
Women aged 70 and over will not be invited
for screening, but can contact Breast Test Wales and request an appointment.
Bowel Screening Wales aims to find cancer at an early stage when treatment is likely to be more effective. Early detection is key. At least nine out of 10 people will survive bowel cancer if it’s found and treated early. The test kit is designed to measure how much blood is in your poo and can be completed at home. People aged between 50 and 74, and who are living in Wales are invited to take the test every two years.
Wales Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Screening Programme’s aim is to reduce the number of ruptured AAA and deaths in Wales. Men aged 65 are invited to be screened. An ultrasound is used to scan the abdomen to look for an AAA.
Antenatal Screening Wales. Expectant mothers will be offered antenatal screening tests to give more information about both theirs and their baby’s health.
Newborn Bloodspot Screening Wales is when a small sample of blood is taken from the baby’s heel, on day five of the baby’s life. This blood sample is screened for rare but serious conditions.
Newborn Hearing screening Wales helps to detect babies born with hearing loss.

Lesley Griffiths MS Member of the Senedd for Wrexham
Readers will be aware of the tragic events that unfolded over 90 years ago when 266 men and boys lost their lives in the Gresford Colliery disaster. The devastating explosion that ripped through the Dennis section of the mine on Saturday 22nd September, 1934 was one of the worst mining disasters in British history and its impact on the community was seismic.
To this day, those involved and with knowledge of the disaster believe the catastrophic incident has been overlooked. An inquiry held in the aftermath of the disaster was deeply flawed. No one was ever held accountable, with a fine of around £150 relating to bookkeeping errors rather than circumstances surrounding the explosion. On Wednesday 2nd April, I had the honour of speaking in the Senedd about the disaster. The aim of my Short Debate was to help raise awareness of the tragedy and the impact it had on so many families.
After speaking in the Chamber last year to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the disaster, I wrote to the UK Government Secretary of State for Wales, Jo Stevens MP, to ascertain whether it would be possible for a further inquiry to be undertaken. Regretfully, the request was rejected.
Having the opportunity to speak about Gresford at length in the Senedd has allowed me to delve into the history and the personal accounts of those who were around at the time. Despite the disaster happening a lifetime ago, their stories have helped keep the memories of Gresford alive.
Praise must go to people like Emily and Margaret Capper and Ted Mackay whose tireless campaigning eventually saw the construction of a fitting memorial.
Ruby McBurney, daughter of William Crump who was killed in the disaster, together with her sister, Evelyn and friend Margery Morrison, were instrumental in raising funds to pay for a plaque at the memorial containing the names of the 266 men who lost their lives.
The Friends of Gresford Colliery Disaster Memorial, which was established around 10 years ago, is still going strong and many members have family connections to the disaster.
Rev Canon David Griffiths conducted the memorial services for 33 years and George Powell and Alan and Margaret Jones from the Wrexham Miners Project are preserving our mining history. After a challenging period in which the future of the building was under threat, the centre is now a thriving community hub.
If anyone wishes to watch the debate in full, it can be viewed on YouTube.

Roads
The Street Scene team have been active again in the area. They have been filling in potholes in various areas including Darland Lane and also carrying out road sweeping. The period of dry weather has helped them to make further progress with this.
Bus Shelters
We have received concerns about the condition of some of the bus shelters in the village. These are the responsibility of Ariva North Wales to maintain. The company has been notified and repairs are due to take place shortly.
No 34 Bus
A review of Bus Services across Wrexham has highlighted paucity of use of the No 34 bus service which serves Trevalyn and Burton. The main responsibility for funding local bus services lies with Welsh Government, with a small amount of additional funding for local authorities. When a review demonstrates a lack of support for a service there is a serious risk of losing it. We have been liaising with the local members for Llay, (the 34 runs through Llay), to generate support for keeping this service.
Public footpaths
Rights of Way officers have been ensuring that all our public footpaths are kept clear and are easy to access. Repairs are scheduled to be carried out to the broken gate on Burton Hall Road. It is important that when using these routes the sign posted paths are followed and dogs are kept under control.
There is a real issue with dogs fouling the farm land and this causes a risk to animals as much of the crops go into animal feeds. There is a significant increase in the fouling of footpaths and fields in Rossett and this is unacceptable.
Police Priorities
We both met with North Wales Police to discuss the main priorities for Rossett. These consist of focusing on speeding, parking on pavements and inconsiderate parking outside the school. We will receive updates on these focus areas and are hoping a more regular police presence will make a positive difference.
Each month we raise the problem of parking on pavements and each month we are inundated with reports and complaints. It is an offence and causes significant problems for people with limited mobility, for mobility scooter users and prams, very often forcing them to bounce down kerbs into the road. It is inconsiderate and we have asked North Wales Police to adopt a zero tolerance policy.

Beryl Blackmore - Mayor of Wrexham & Councillor for Marford & Hoseley
Hello everyone!
What amazing weather we are having!
I hope I haven't spoken too soon, as the week ahead is looking good for sunshine each day. Apart from neighbour disputes still ongoing, which are very stressful, it has been quiet in Marford and Hoseley. I was hoping by now that we would have seen some action at The Trevor Arms, but all is very quiet. Complaints still continue about the Zebra Crossing in Marford but I am still waiting for feedback from Highways. It's so frustrating.
This week, we heard that the Court of Appeal has not supported The Welsh Assembly in their quest to squash our Victory with the LDP. The Councillors who put their necks on the line are suitably pleased. Now the work starts to put together a plan that suits our needs, so watch this space.
Schools will be closing for the Easter Break and Holiday Clubs will be open in the two village schools. Be sure to make use of them, knowing they are a safe place for your children to play and, maybe, a welcome break for parents and grandparents. We are very lucky to have super schools, and we still have a Playgroup in Marford, all serving the Community.
VE Day
As we head to May, many thoughts are turning to VE events. Thursday 8th May is the main day, and a short service will take place at St Giles’ Church at 12.30pm, followed by a parade by the Forces to the Cenotaph at The Memorial Hall, Wrexham for wreath laying. You are all invited to the service and to line the streets from the Church to the Cenotaph.
I know the British Legion in Gresford have an event on 3rd May, and Gresford Methodist Church will have their normal Church service at 10:30am on Sunday 11th May, followed by a VE lunch and Singalong. All are welcome so contact me for details or check out the website.
I have been busy with Mayoral Duties. I know many read about my adventures, which are so varied - visits from authors, school groups and so much more! It's amazing.
As always, if you need to get in touch, please contact me on the email below.

Jeremy Kent Councillor for Gresford
When I wrote my article for last month, I mentioned my hope that the weather would be good to us, and so far, it has been lovely to finally have some sun while on my “ward walks”. I often take time to walk around the village and take note of any issues that I see and get working on resolving these. I equally enjoy the conversations that I have with people along the way. If you see me about, please do stop and say hello!
Village events
I was delighted to receive an invitation to speak at the Gresford Retirement Club and give attendees an update on some of the key issues that I have been dealing with and take questions from the group. I am always happy to attend any events that are taking place in the village, also to share these on the Gresford News Facebook page.
So please do let me know if you have an event happening I can advertise for you, or would be able to support or attend.
Parking
Some will have seen that The Plough car park has now come under stricter parking rules. Whilst I have had some complaints, the car park is private land and they have for a long time been accommodating with the cars that park there, some for the whole day, or longer. They do have a grace period, which I will not detail the specifics of here just in case there are any changes since I wrote this article and its publication. Residents should check all signage.
Whilst I am talking about parking, I have had an increase of complaints about people parking illegally or inconsiderately on residential streets including Annefield Park, Poplar Avenue and Newtown. You must not park on junctions, double yellow lines or in a way that blocks access to others, such as driveways, dropped kerbs or on pavements.
Contact
There are always numerous issues that residents raise with me and with the varied challenges that I have become accustomed to, no one month is the same. I do try to reply and acknowledge all emails, but if I haven’t please do feel free to give me a nudge. We are all human and the vast amount of emails that come through some days is staggering!
It is always better to email me than to send a message on Facebook etc so that I can deal with this ASAP, messages sometimes are not picked up as quickly.
As always, if you have anything you wish to raise with me, then please do not hesitate to contact me.
