EssentialsMAG August 2025 - North Wrexham/Cheshire Magazine
August has a unique kind of magic, don’t you think? It’s the time of year when we try, if only for a little while, to slow down. Life doesn’t always allow it, but there’s something about these long, warm days that gently encourages us to take things at a more relaxed pace.
Whether you’re enjoying a staycation, planning days out, or simply making the most of sunny afternoons in the garden, this month offers a chance to catch your breath. And with the final Bank Holiday before Christmas on the horizon, at the end of the month, it’s the perfect excuse to pause and soak up the summer.
We’ve also been eating better lately, thanks to Adam Gaunt-Evans’ delicious recipe series (page 32), which continues to inspire us with fresh, flavourful ideas that are just right for this time of year.
And if you’ve got little ones to entertain, don’t miss the kids’ colouring page (page 56). It’s a simple way to keep them happily occupied while you enjoy a few peaceful minutes.
Wishing you a restful August! All the best, Vicky Heathfield

Stronger Than You Think!
By KERRY EVANS, Disability Liaison Officer at Wrexham AFC
I’ve been thinking about writing a book for quite some time. My late Nan used to say that if I ever wrote one, no one would believe it was true, as so much has happened in my life.
I wanted to start at the beginning, because there’s definitely a lot to tell – from being born with a mild disability and experiencing a very challenging childhood, including being bullied at school, to starting a family, getting married, and then facing an awful setback at the age of 30.
But from there, it became a story of turning things around, going on to succeed and even working for Hollywood stars!
I really want ‘Stronger Than You Think’ to be inspiring, to show that if I can achieve what I have, then anything is possible. I believe everyone is good at something – they just need to ‘find their thing’.
More than a job
I’ve worked at Wrexham AFC for the past nine seasons as the club’s Disability Liaison Officer. Before the arrival of our Hollywood owners, I was a full-time volunteer under fan ownership. For the past three and a half years, I’ve been a full-time member of staff, working for Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds.
I truly feel it’s an honour to fulfil my role at Wrexham AFC. In fact, I’d go as far
as saying it’s a vocation, not just a job. I feel I have a story to tell – one that could really inspire people.
I played a significant role in the first series of ‘Welcome to Wrexham’, where I featured heavily – and I’m now known worldwide as a result!
Then, at the first promotion party after we won the National League, I chatted to Rob McElhenney and told him that all I want to do in my role is inspire people. His reply was something I’ll never forget: that I already inspire hundreds of people – including him.
From dream to reality
So, the book is now a reality. Seeing the front cover made it all feel very real. The title came about because I’ve overcome so much in my life to get to where I am today.
It’s been a long and often difficult journey, but my hope is that it leaves people with the belief that they too can achieve – no matter what challenges they face.
Stronger Than You Think is available to purchase from 12th August on Amazon and Waterstones, and is available to pre-order.

Gresford Sailing Club News
By GRESFORD SAILING CLUB (GSC)
We have had a brilliant few months, welcoming new members, hosting schools and scouts, running training sessions for adults and juniors, holding paddleboarding events as well as our regular racing and model boating summer programme being in full swing. The unseasonably high winter waters have finally receded, and although the clear-up from the flooding continues, things are very much back to normal.
Here are a few highlights so far: Our wonderful volunteer instructors ran an adult RYA Level 1 and 2 course across a very windy weekend in May. Despite the strong winds we managed to get out on the water both days, with reefed sails and plenty of on-boat support (not to mention a few capsizes!). These sailors have continued to practice their skills on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings, further helped by the generous support of our more experienced regulars.
Junior training on Friday evenings is continuing to be very popular, we have welcomed familiar and new faces alike. Again, we rely on our trusty team of volunteer instructors and shore-based support crew to deliver these sessions –as well as the fantastic parental support in getting boats rigged and de-rigged every week.
We have also hosted local schools and scout groups to introduce young people to their first taste of sailing. Again, led by volunteers who give up an incredible amount of their
time. It is always so rewarding to watch people progress – especially those who may start the day a little nervously.
This season we have also welcomed SUP Lass Paddle Adventures to run a number of paddleboarding events at the club, including safety and rescue, tuition and a SUP polo session and social evening – more great opportunities to get onto the water.
Our thoughts will soon be turning to our themed ‘pirate day’ with a range of water and shore-based games, food and fun to celebrate the end of the summer season. We also continue to look for funding opportunities, seeking to improve the facilities for our members, whilst retaining our core ethos of being community-focused and helping to make sailing as accessible as possible to all.
Please take a look at our socials to get a flavour of what you can come and enjoy at the club - we’d love to see you down by the water!

The NHS is a cornerstone of our society and continues to provide essential care to millions across the UK. But as demand for services grows, many people are also seeking alternative ways to access healthcare, particularly when it comes to specialist support or shorter waiting times.
Bridge House Clinic, located on Station Road, Rossett, offers a private healthcare option designed to work alongside existing NHS services. Bridge House Clinic was created with one simple goal: to provide high-quality, patient-focused care in a calm and accessible setting.
At Bridge House Clinic, patients benefit from a wide range of services under one roof, including private GP consultations, Dermatology, ENT, Pain Management, Orthopaedics, Vascular surgery and nonsurgical aesthetics.

Stay Safe at University
By RIK’S PAT TESTING
Portable Appliance Testing, more commonly known as PAT Testing, is a simple but essential process designed to check that electrical appliances are safe to use. It involves a visual inspection and a series of electrical tests carried out using specialist equipment. While there’s no legal requirement for PAT testing in private homes, it’s a critical part of health and safety in workplaces, rented properties, and some university accommodation.
PAT testing must be carried out by a qualified person who understands electrical systems and knows how to use the specialist testing equipment safely and correctly. This includes identifying faults, checking for damage, ensuring appliances meet safety standards, and keeping accurate records of test results.
Faulty appliances can be a serious electrocution or fire risk, and even small items like phone chargers or desk lamps can cause major damage if something goes wrong. PAT testing helps to catch potential problems early, such as exposed wires, damaged plugs, or faulty internal connections – offering peace of mind.
Off to uni? Stay safe and compliant
If you’re a student heading off to university, it’s important to know that many UK Halls of Residence now insist that personal electrical items brought on site have a valid PAT test certificate. It might seem like just another box to tick, but it’s really about protecting everyone in shared accommodation from potential electrical hazards.
So, what kind of items need testing?
If you're taking any of the following to uni, they may need a check-up before you go:
• Phone and laptop chargers
• Computers, monitors, and printers
• TVs and games consoles
• Kettles and hairdryers
• Desk fans and lights
• Extension leads and power strips.
The good news is that getting these items tested is quick, easy, and affordable, especially with Rik’s PAT Testing, which offers a special student rate of just £20 for a local home visit. This includes testing for up to 10 items, with any additional items tested for just 50p each. You’ll get a certificate of compliance for each item, helping you stay on the right side of university rules - and more importantly, stay safe.
Whether you’re preparing your student digs or want to make sure your appliances at home are up to scratch, PAT testing is a small step that could prevent a big problem.
For more information, or to book your PAT test, contact Rik’s PAT Testing today on: 07749 045655, or email Rik at: riks.pat.testing@gmail.com

By JO BURKE FACILITIES MANAGER
We are pleased to report a busy few months, with lots of improvements being made to maintain and improve our facilities! We have recently re-surfaced the soft play area in the enclosed garden off the main hall. This is a lovely area for children to sit and play under the shade of the tree –perfect for parties on hot, sunny days!
All internal lights in the building have now been fully changed to LED. Coupled with our solar panels, we are making real progress towards reducing our environmental impact and running costs.
In conjunction with Gresford Athletic FC junior and senior teams, we are currently working on a project to re-size the football pitches to provide two pitches of roughly the same size. This will enable both seniors and juniors to use either pitch, providing more flexibility for scheduling matches throughout the season. The work will be done in stages, and we hope to commence the work as soon as possible. We would like to thank our previous Chair, Ian Gibson, for his time and effort on this project on behalf of the Trust.
If becoming a Trustee is of interest to you, please come along to our AGM on Thursday 14th August at 7pm or contact us in advance for more information.
This is what our current Trustees say:
“Trustees are from all walks of life. They come together and use their expertise for the benefit of Gresford. I have also benefited from their friendliness and willingness to help.”
“As someone who works full time I didn’t think I could be of help to the Trust, but since becoming a Trustee I have found my contribution can be just as valuable. The reward is to see a successful resource for the village and meet such dedicated people who care about the Trust and the village.”
“We’re lucky enough to live in a village with a real community and it’s great to feel you are contributing to that. It’s a privilege to play even a small part in helping to safeguard assets for future generations.”
“The reward you get for being a Trustee is knowing you're helping to secure the facilities for future generations.”
“Being a Trustee has helped me make a positive impact and offers me the opportunity to contribute to a cause I care about. It is rewarding and I have also made new friends.”

August is usually one of the hottest months of the year - making watering essential. Try to use grey water wherever possible, especially as water butts may be running low if it has been a dry summer. August is traditionally holiday-time, so you might need to enlist the help of friends and family to look after the garden while you are away. When you are at home, take the time to prune Wisteria and summer-flowering shrubs such as Lavender, once they've finished flowering.
TOP 10 JOBS TO DO IN THE GARDEN THIS MONTH
1. Prune Wisteria.
2. Don’t delay pruning summer fruits trained as restricted forms.
3. Deadhead flowering plants regularly.
4. Water! Particularly containers, and new plants, preferably with grey recycled water or stored rainwater.
5. Collect seed from garden plants.
6. Harvest sweetcorn and other vegetables as they become ready.
7. Continue cutting out old fruited canes on raspberries.
8. Lift and pot up rooted strawberry runners.
9. Keep ponds and water features topped up.
10. Feed the soil with green manures.

Moth Numbers in Trouble: A Warning from Nature
Moth populations are in serious decline across the UK. Since 1968, overall numbers have fallen by 28%, with southern Britain seeing an even steeper drop of 40%. Over 60 species became extinct during the 20th century, and many others – including oncecommon, strikingly beautiful moths – have dwindled dramatically.
This isn’t just a problem for moths Their disappearance has wide-reaching consequences for our ecosystems. Moths and their caterpillars are a vital food source for a range of species including bats, amphibians, small mammals and birds. Garden favourites like the Blue Tit, Great Tit, Robin, Wren and Blackbird all rely heavily on moth caterpillars to feed their chicks.
As moth numbers fall, these creatures may struggle to survive. Research has already linked declining bat populations on farmland to reduced moth availability. The Cuckoo may also be suffering – it feeds on hairy caterpillars such as those of the Garden Tiger moth, now in decline.
The causes behind the drop in moth numbers are complex and not fully understood. Habitat loss through intensive farming, urban development, commercial forestry and industrial expansion plays a major role. Changes in garden management, increased use of pesticides and herbicides, light pollution and climate change are also likely contributors.
Whatever the reasons, one thing is clear: the decline in moths is a signal that all is not well with our natural environment. These oftenoverlooked insects are essential to a healthy ecosystem, and their continued loss could have far-reaching effects on the wildlife we know and love.
The next time you see a moth, take a moment to appreciate its role in the web of life – and consider what we can all do to help protect them.
MOTH OF THE MONTH
WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR IN AUGUST: Elephant Hawk-Moth
The adults are nocturnal, flying from dusk and attracted to light. They feed on the wing from honeysuckle and other tubular flowers. The large larvae, with distinctive eye markings, are usually seen either resting on stems in warm weather or searching for somewhere to pupate.

Seasonal Treats in August
August is a delightful month when the bounties of nature flourish, offering an array of fresh and vibrant produce. As summer reaches its peak, here's a glimpse of the abundance of fruits, vegetables, and herbs that are in season.
Berries
Fruits take centre stage during August. Berries are in their prime, with juicy strawberries adorning desserts and indulging taste buds. Raspberries and blackberries are also abundant, providing a delightful balance of tartness and sweetness. They can be enjoyed fresh, added to summer salads, or transformed into jams and preserves.
Stone fruits such as peaches, nectarines, and plums come into their own. These juicy fruits are perfect for enjoying on their own or incorporating into desserts, fruit salads, or savoury dishes like grilled peach salads. Apples and pears start to make their appearance, showcasing a range of varieties that vary in taste and texture.
Vegetables
Fresh peas, both garden peas and sugar snap peas, are at their peak, providing a delightful burst of sweetness. They can be enjoyed raw, steamed, or incorporated into salads, pasta dishes, or risottos.
Courgettes are abundant too, offering versatility in the kitchen. They can be spiralized, grilled, roasted, or added to stir-fries, soups, and stews.
Leafy greens such as lettuce, spinach, and rocket provide the perfect base for summer salads. Sweetcorn is at its best during August, with its plump kernels offering a burst of sweetness. It can be enjoyed grilled, boiled, or added to salads or salsas.
Herbs
Herbs also play a prominent role in August's culinary offerings. Fragrant basil is an essential ingredient in Caprese salads, pesto, and pasta dishes. Mint lends its’ refreshing flavour to beverages, desserts, and savoury dishes like lamb or couscous.
Courgettes, Sweetcorn, Tomatoes, Green Beans, Peas, Sugar Snaps, Beetroot, Carrots, Cabbage, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Spinach, Lettuce, Radishes, Rocket, Watercress, Spring Onions, New Potatoes.
Be Safe At the Beach
As the school holidays continue and the warm weather lingers, many families and couples will be heading to the coast for a well-earned day out. Whether it's Talacre, Llandudno, or further afield, a trip to the beach is a summer favourite. But while it’s all about fun and relaxation, the sea can be unpredictable, and even strong swimmers can get into difficulty.
That’s why the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) shares important water safety guidance each summer, helping visitors stay safe while enjoying the coast. Their advice is simple, practical, and could save a life.
Respect the water
Even on calm days, open water can be dangerous. Cold temperatures, strong currents, and sudden changes in depth are just a few of the risks people often underestimate.
If you or your children are swimming in the sea, always:
• Choose a beach with lifeguards on duty and swim between the red and yellow flags
• Never use inflatables in open water, they can easily be swept out to sea
• Watch children closely at all times, even in shallow water
What to do in an emergency
If you find yourself in trouble in the water, the RNLI recommends you:
‘Float to Live’
Lie on your back with arms and legs spread out to stay calm and keep breathing steady. Don’t try to swim straight away. Floating helps you regain control before calling or waving for help.
If you see someone else in trouble
Call 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard.
Don’t enter the water yourself
Instead, try to help by throwing something that floats.
Before setting off for the beach:
• Check tide times and local weather forecasts
• Pack water, snacks, and sun protection
• Know where the nearest lifeguard station is
• Download the what3words app, it helps emergency services find your exact location quickly.
The RNLI is made up of dedicated volunteers who save lives at sea, but they also work hard to help prevent accidents before they happen. By following their guidance, you can enjoy every wave, paddle, and picnic with confidence.
• Don’t jump into the water from rocks, piers or sea walls, the depth can vary and hide hazards.

What are the Tax Benefits of Owning a Home?
By WARREN HADLOW
Your home is probably the biggest single purchase you’ll ever make. Being a homeowner can also have key tax benefits for you and your family both during your lifetime and when you pass property on. Speaking to experts could reveal tax reliefs that you may not be aware of, even if you’ve been a home owner for a long time.
1. Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) Relief
First time buyers in England will be eligible for SDLT relief. You won’t pay SDLT on the first £300,000 of a property's value, as long as the home’s value is worth £500,000 or less. If valued between £300,000 and £500,000, you’ll pay 5% SDLT on the value above £300,000. And if the house is more than £500,000, you’ll pay SDLT at the same rate as a non-first time buyer, which is between 5% and 12% of the price.
For those buying their first home in Wales, SDLT is known as Land Transaction Tax (LTT). Whilst there is no special relief for first time buyers, the 0% LTT threshold is higher at £225,000.
2. Lifetime ISA (LISA)
If you’re not ready to buy, a LISA is a taxefficient way to save up for a house deposit. If you are 18-39, you can put up to £4,000 each year tax-free, until you reach 50. You also get a 25% cash boost from the government, up to a maximum of £1,000 per year.
3. The Rent-a-Room Scheme
Instead of downsizing, why not consider renting out a furnished room as an occasional BnB or to a lodger? You might qualify for up to £7,500 tax free income from Rent-a-Room relief. Even better, some mortgage lenders accept this as an income.
Just note that the allowance is halved to £3,750, if you share the income with your partner or a joint owner.

4. Principal Private Residence Relief (PRR)
If you sell your main property, you won’t pay Capital Gains Tax (CGT) on any increase in value because of PRR. If you have lived in your house a long time and the value is significantly higher, this can save you a lot of tax. However, this is not applicable on any second homes or buy-to-let properties you might be looking to sell.
If you are selling your main property and downsizing for a variety of reasons, this may mean you end up with a large, tax-free lump sum. Deciding what to do with this is a nice problem to have and there are number of options available to you that a financial adviser can help you choose the right one.
Being a homeowner is more than just tax breaks though. We invest time, money, love and often years of our lives in our homes. But it’s always important to protect and maximise the benefits your greatest asset can bring.
We’re here to help you with practical advice and support on home ownership and taxes. Feel free to get in touch with us to find out which tax benefits you could take advantage of.
The levels and bases of taxation, and reliefs from taxation, can change at any time and are generally dependent on individual circumstances.
Please note that St. James's Place do not offer Lifetime ISAs.

Why You Should Start Planning Your Christmas Marketing in August
It might still be summer, but if you run a business, now is the perfect time to start thinking about Christmas. Many small businesses wait until November to plan their festive marketing, but by then, it’s a rush to compete with larger businesses who’ve had their campaigns in place for months. Starting in August gives you time to plan carefully, be creative, and make the most of the biggest retail opportunity of the year.
Here’s why early planning pays off: You’ll have a clear timeline
Mapping out your festive promotions now means you can build up slowly through September, October, and November, rather than panic-launching a campaign at the last minute. Early planning helps you keep control of stock levels, delivery times, and lead generation.
You can secure the best advertising spots Magazines, online platforms, and even local events book up quickly for Christmas placements. By planning now, you can grab those premium spots before they go – and often at a better price.
Your audience will hear you clearly Shoppers start looking for gifts earlier every year. If you’ve already started your campaign by October, you’re more likely to catch them when they’re still undecided, and before they’re overwhelmed by offers and ads.
You can create thoughtful, festive offers Bundles, gift guides, festive packaging, limited editions, all take time to create. Planning ahead means your Christmas offering will feel considered and valuable, not rushed or last-minute.
You’ll avoid supply issues
If you need printed materials, product packaging, or new stock, ordering early helps avoid delays, and ensures you’re ready for Black Friday, Christmas shopping and lastminute panic buyers.
A simple Christmas prep checklist for August:
• Review last year’s festive performance
• Set goals and decide on promotions
• Design gift bundles or offers
• Plan your social media and email campaign schedule
• Book print or digital adverts early
• Don’t let Christmas sneak up on you. Planning now means less stress, more impact, and better sales.

Looking after your health during the summer is important and includes taking any necessary precautions against certain health risks that are more likely when travelling and being exposed to heat and sunshine.
Sun and heat
Sunburn and heatstroke can cause serious problems. The sun can be enjoyed safely by using shade, protective clothing, hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Use sun blocks of adequate SPF strength, reapply often and after swimming. Take special care of children and those with pale skin.
Heat rash is a common skin condition which is uncomfortable but usually harmless, the rash occurs when the sweat ducts become blocked, and sweat is trapped beneath the skin causing irritation. Treatment for heat rash includes wearing loose lightweight clothing, staying hydrated and keeping the skin cool and dry.
Everyone is at risk of dehydration in hot temperatures. It is important to keep hydrated. Ensure you drink plenty of fluids. Fruits and salad are full of water and can help hydrate you. Sugary, alcoholic, and caffeinated drinks can make you dehydrated.
Insect bites
Insect bites and stings are not usually serious and get better in a few days. You can often treat an insect bite or sting by visiting a pharmacy, without the need to see a GP.
Always wash your skin with soap and water to help lower the chance of infection. If the bite or sting does not get better in a few days contact your local pharmacy and it can be treated under the common ailments scheme.
Medical care when you are away from home
If you are away on holiday or visiting family this summer and need medical assistance.
• Please do not compete a Klinik form for Alyn Family Doctors if you are away from the local area. Please complete the form upon your return home if you still require medical assistance.
• In a medical emergency contact the emergency services (this may be a different number if you are overseas).
• Visit a local pharmacy.
• Attend a minor injuries unit or A&E department.
• Contact 111 (If you are in the UK).
• Temporarily register with a GP practice local to the area you are visiting.

Andrew Ranger MP Member of Parliament for Wrexham
It’s been a year since I was privileged to be elected as Wrexham’s MP.
Our constituency in Wrexham is so geographically diverse from the city centre to the mining villages like Llay and the rural areas like Overton. After the boundary changes which came into force for the 2024 election, and the fact that the council and Senedd boundaries are different, people sometimes don’t realise when they are in the Wrexham constituency and when they are not! Therefore, I’ve been holding constituency surgeries in different areas like Rossett, Marchwiel, Bangor on Dee and Gwersyllt as well as in the centre of Wrexham.
It has been fantastic to meet so many organisations, charities and businesses who do so much for our area. At a visit to Kellogg’s recently, what really shone through was the sense of community at the factory. People build careers there and choose to stay; new employees commented on the welcome and friendly atmosphere and the company itself is willing to invest and expand.
At Stori Brymbo, I was able to see the fascinating developing site on the former steelworks which is now taking shape as a major new attraction and community resource to open next year. The Fossil Forest was particularly impressive and something that is so unusual and rare, it should really put our area on the map.
Advance Brighter Futures (ABF) is a mental health and wellbeing charity, operating in Wrexham since 1992 and I was incredibly moved to hear about their inspiring work earlier this year. They are collaborating with Baton of Hope to develop awareness and the conversation around suicide prevention.
ABF are the Lead Charity Partner for the Wrexham leg of the Baton of Hope Tour which is the UK’s biggest suicide prevention initiative. Wrexham is one of just 20 locations chosen across the UK – and the only one representing Wales. The tour arrives in Wrexham on Saturday 4th October and the route will take the baton across the county borough before finishing in the city centre at Wrexham University. I am honoured to have been asked to be a baton bearer on a section of the tour. Check out their website for more information on the route and how you can get involved.
If you have any queries or concerns or you have an issue that you would like me to try and assist you with, please do not hesitate to contact me on 01978 788854 or Andrew.Ranger.mp@parliament.uk
Lesley Griffiths MS Member of the Senedd for Wrexham
Wrexham hosted Wales’ first ever Public Transport Summit at the end of May. It was a pleasure to be part of the two-day event that was held at Wrexham University and brought together both Wales and England’s influential transport and business leaders.
A highlight of the summit was the launch of Network North Wales, a hugely ambitious and transformative programme of work that aims to better connect communities, with more rail and bus services, new stations, new transport routes, new trains, new buses and new technology.
The programme outlines a series of short, medium and long-term targets but at its heart will be a world class, cross-border Metro service linking Wrexham and Liverpool.
Wrexham is on the rise. Delivering a modern, integrated transport network in the years ahead will be a game-changer for our city and region and I will continue to champion Network North Wales in the Senedd.
Earlier this year, a group of Year 6 students from All Saints’ Primary School in Gresford had the experience of a lifetime.
They spent two weeks on an all-expenses paid trip to Singapore after the school secured funding from Taith.
Taith is an international learning exchange programme, funded by the Welsh Government. It aims to create life-changing opportunities for people in Wales to learn, study and volunteer all over the world.
I visited the school once again to hear all about their unforgettable experience and was pleased to discover the new Year 6 children starting in September will also have the opportunity to travel to Singapore with the school planning on returning later this year.
The Welsh Government recently confirmed Taith has been extended until 2028 so if any other group or school is interested in finding out more about the programme, all the information can be found on the Taith website.
Finally, it was lovely to visit the team at Marford Playgroup to see their new, purpose-built classroom.
Having been aware of the project for some time, I know it has been a long journey to get to this point and I’m pleased all the hard work has paid off.
Congratulations to Tracey and her team –the new classroom looks fantastic and it is clear the children love the new facilities.
If you’re a constituent in Wrexham and there’s an issue I could help you with, please contact me via the details below.
Hugh Jones & Ross Shepherd Councillors for Rossett
Fly tipping
We have been receiving calls about numerous reports of fly tipping within the village and beyond. Once notified, Street Scene are attending to remove the rubbish. Prosecutions have taken place in the County Borough. If the dumping of goods is witnessed, please report to North Wales Police on 101. This is a problem both locally and nationally.
Dog fouling
Once again numerous complaints about dog fouling along our public footpaths and in fields growing crops. This is unacceptable and illegal. The crops are either used for animal or human food chain and in the case of animal, serious health risks ensue. Some walkers are using bags and leaving them on the footpaths - again this is unacceptable.
Drains
Officers are currently carrying out a number of surveys on drains within the village. The purpose of this is to identify blockages and where the drainage of water can be improved in areas where standing water has caused numerous issues. Work is also being carried out on manhole covers which have sunk making the road surface uneven.
Water ways
We are receiving reports of trees and branches causing some blockages in the River Alyn. Natural Resouces Wales are responsible for keeping the rivers clear and, once notified of a problem, will attend, assess and rectify any issues.
Bins
Bins around the village are the responsibility of both Rossett and Wrexham councils. They are regularly checked and emptied on a given cycle.
Food recycling
Wrexham Council urgently needs more residents to use the food caddies. This waste is an important part of the green waste process. In addition, if we fail to reach our recycling targets, Welsh Government can levy a fine of at least three quarters of a million pounds.

Beryl Blackmore Councillor for Marford & Hoseley
Welcome to summer! I am sure you will agree it's officially arrived.
I have decided this article will be a reflection on the last three years since standing for election for Marford and Hoseley Ward. How times have changed since I was last a County Councillor in 2012 for Gresford.
iPads at council meetings have replaced hard copies; Zoom has meant you can stay home and meet online, which came in very much due to Covid. For me, I like a hard copy of meetings as I can write on them and refer to items quicker. Zoom has advantages, especially during the winter months for Councillors who live out in the sticks where snow and ice can be a problem. Also, if a meeting is likely to be just an hour, then it's more convenient to stay at home. But I believe in face-to-face meetings as much as possible - not only is it good to meet and socialise but to get to know the other Councillors is important.
We problem share and rant and rave! The latest rant for me is over all the totally unnecessary speed signs. The amount of money spent over the last couple of years is obscene. On signs and two posts on every street - even a cul-de-sac with five houses! There is no chance of getting up to 5mph never mind 20 mph! I despair.
Over this last three years, I have been fighting constantly for Marford Hill to be
improved with pavements widened by removing all the overgrown grass and foliage. Wrexham Environment Department is not listening and waste money on unnecessary street signs. Residents think it's the Councillors’ fault when, in fact, we are up against Officers and Lead Members first. We have to make a case to them, but far too often their opinion wins, and it is very frustrating.
But I will keep going as the Community really is in my heart.
It is still two years before local elections so surely, Wrexham will address the Zebra crossing which needs repainting. They tell me they will, but the road is due to be resurfaced! Double lines still need extending in Claypit Lane, by the Chapel, and a Lease Agreement needs signing for Marford swings. Watch this space - maybe September is the month to see action, after the heatwave.
Take care everyone - you know how to contact me.

Jeremy Kent Councillor for Gresford
Welcome to my August update for EssentialsMAG.
It’s shaping up to be a busy and exciting month for our community, with some fantastic local events ahead – as well as some ongoing updates from around the village. I hope everyone gets a chance to enjoy what Gresford and the wider Wrexham area have to offer this summer.
Wrexham Eisteddfod
2nd to 9th August
Wrexham is proudly hosting the National Eisteddfod this year, and it promises to be an incredible celebration of Welsh culture, language and talent. The event runs from 2nd to 9th August and is a fantastic opportunity to take part in something truly special right on our doorstep. Whether you’re attending performances, exploring the Maes, or just soaking in the atmosphere, there will be plenty to enjoy. I encourage all residents to get involved and support this major cultural event. A massive thanks to the “Harddu” who have spent weeks decorating the village (and months of planning) in preparation for the event. The village looks amazing and is a great welcome to travellers coming from further afield!
Gresford Scarecrow Trail
2nd to 17th August
Also running that week is the much-loved IMAGE Scarecrow Trail. It’s always a joy to see the village come alive with colour, humour and creativity – and this year looks set to be the biggest yet and with a theme of Welsh Culture to coincide with the Eisteddfod.
Thank you in advance to all who are taking part and to those organising the event. It’s things like this that help build community spirit and offer fun for families of all ages. Don’t forget to pick up a trail map and vote for your favourites! Keep an eye out for the winners and any planned events.
Flooding on Vicarage Lane
On a more practical note, I’m pleased to report that flooding issues on Vicarage Lane have now been dealt with. After continued pressure and several site visits with Streetscene officers, the necessary work has been carried out to improve drainage and prevent further problems. I know this has been a long-standing concern for residents, and I’m glad we’ve seen progress on this. I’ll continue to monitor the area and stay in touch with residents to ensure the solution holds.
As always, I’m here to help with any concerns you may have – whether large or small. Feel free to contact me directly or stop for a chat when I’m out and about in the village.
