Page 1

Welcome to our July issue!

July brings the start of the long summer holidays for pupils, students, and teachers across the UK, with millions expected to head off in search of sand, sea, and sunshine.

It also marks Plastic Free July - a campaign that began as a small Australian initiative in 2011 and has since grown into a global movement involving millions. With growing awareness of the climate crisis, more people than ever are taking part.

The campaign raises awareness of the impact of single-use plastics and offers practical tips and resources to help us reduce plastic waste in our everyday lives. To get involved, visit: www.plasticfreejuly.org.

Whatever your plans this month, I hope you manage to take a break from the daily routine. Even if a trip abroad isn’t on the cards, we’re lucky to have so many beautiful, inspiring places close to home - perfect for recharging, connecting with nature, and nurturing your wellbeing.

Wishing you a fantastic July!

Scarecrow Trail: Final Call For Submissions

Get ready to bring a little Welsh magic to life this summer! IMAGE, the local environmental group, is reminding everyone that time is running out to choose your scarecrow design for this year’s trail. The theme for 2025 is "Wales and the Welsh", and all ideas must be submitted and approved by midnight on Sunday 6th July to make sure each creation is unique.

Once all designs are in, the team will get to work plotting and printing the trail maps, which will be available from Marford Co-op, Gresford Spar, Gresford Newsagents and the library for just £1. Then from Saturday 2nd August to Sunday 17th August, you’ll have the chance to follow the trail, enjoy the creativity on display, and vote for your favourite in the People’s Choice category. Simply return your completed form to one of the outlets listed.

Don’t live in the village? No problem, IMAGE can ‘host’ scarecrows built elsewhere. Just get in touch at scarecrow.image@gmail.com to take part.

Painting for a Purpose

Laura, owner of Regent House of Flowers in Wrexham, is aiming to raise £300 in aid of SSAFA and Brecon Beacons Mountain Rescue Team - two charities close to her heart and to the memory of her late partner Mick. Mick, a proud Army veteran, had a deep connection to the mountains, especially the Brecon Beacons, which Laura describes as his “forever home.” Each year on his birthday, she honours him by painting one of the places he loved most. This year’s painting captures the Storey Arms route at the Crossing, where the path begins its steep climb to Corn Du - a route still used by the Army and SAS for training, making it all the more meaningful.

To support her fundraising, Laura is raffling the first framed A3 limited edition print of the painting. Entry is just £2 per ticket, and all proceeds will be shared between SSAFA and Brecon Beacons MRT. The draw will take place on 31st August 2025.

To take part, email lausy8@hotmail.com for your lucky ticket numbers. Donations can be made via Laura’s JustGiving page (https://tinyurl.com/2tyu7kba), with funds withdrawn directly to the charities.

Walking Festival Enjoys Strong Turnout

Despite some unsettled weather, the 2025 Wrexham Walking Festival saw an impressive turnout, with 100s of walkers joining in the nine day event. The festival, a much-loved annual highlight, offered a wide range of free guided walks celebrating the landscapes, heritage, and hidden corners of Wrexham and the surrounding area. From gentle strolls to more challenging treks, there was something for all ages and abilities. Organisers were delighted with the level of participation and told us, “It reflected the community’s ongoing enthusiasm for getting outdoors and exploring the local area - whatever the weather.”

For details of walks all year round, visit Walkabout Wrexham: www.walksinwrexham.com

Chariotts: Helping People Get Where They Need to Be

For 30 years, Chariotts has been a lifeline for people in the Wrexham area living with mobility, sensory, or other health-related challenges.

This dedicated local charity provides doorto-door transport for individuals who use wheelchairs or find it difficult to access public transport. Whether it’s a hospital appointment, a trip to the shops, or visiting friends, Chariotts helps people maintain their independence and stay connected with their community.

Chariotts was founded by John Carr, who recognised a growing need for reliable, accessible transport in Wrexham. At the time, there were very few options available for people using wheelchairs, and John was determined to change that. Thanks to his vision, Chariotts was born – and for three decades, it’s been making a real difference to people’s lives.

The service is provided entirely by trained volunteer drivers who generously give their time to help others. At its peak, Chariotts had around 40 volunteers on the road. But since the Covid pandemic, that number has dropped significantly – they now have just 16 drivers, despite demand for their services remaining high.

This shortage means the charity is struggling to keep up, and sadly, some people are missing out.

That’s why Chariotts is urgently appealing for more volunteer drivers to come forward. If you can spare a few hours a week, have a full driving licence, and would like to do something truly rewarding, they would love to hear from you.

Full training is provided, and you'll be joining a friendly, supportive team. More importantly, you’ll be helping individuals who need support to get out and about safely –something many of us take for granted.

Chariotts has always been about people helping people. If you think you could make a difference by becoming a volunteer driver, please get in touch with the team and help keep this essential service on the road for another 30 years.

For more information, call George or Patricia on: 01978 312888, or send an email to: chariotts@hotmail.com

Tune In and Listen Deeply

World Listening Day: July 18th

Listening goes far beyond hearing someone speak. It's about tuning into the world around us, to others, and most importantly, to ourselves. In Pilates, listening plays a vital role. As a teacher, I hear more than just words. When someone walks into class feeling fearful or in pain, their body often reflects that. Tension, guarded movement, hesitation — all of it tells a story. And before we move forward, they need the space to be heard.

But just as I listen to them, I encourage them to listen inwardly, too.

Ask yourself:

What’s your internal dialogue during movement?

How do you describe your pain or limitations?

Do you find yourself catastrophising discomfort - or brushing it off entirely?

Both extremes can hold us back. Overplaying pain may deepen fear, and underplaying it can lead to injury or frustration. Honesty matters - without judgement or emotion, just clear observation.

Even if you feel fit and well, listening remains essential. It’s in those quiet moments on the mat - where breath meets movement - that you truly begin to connect. Rushing or zoning out can mean missing the small details, the subtle feedback your body offers with each breath, shift, and stretch.

When we listen deeply, our practice becomes more intelligent, more intuitive, and more empowering.

So yes, take in my cues during class - but also take time to hear your own body’s voice. Tune into sensation. Notice what feels light, strong, restricted, or new.

Quiet the inner critic. Dial up the inner ear.

This World Listening Day, let’s make space for stillness, connection, and deeper listening - both on the mat and beyond it.

Bodywork-Pilates was established in 2002. They offer the very best in pilates, yoga and holistic fitness, with over 20 classes a week to choose from in and around Wrexham and Chester.

A Bright New Chapter

Haswells' New Office in Rossett: A Bright New Chapter in Our LongStanding Journey

At Haswells, we believe that every new chapter is a chance to grow, improve, and find new ways to help our clients. That’s why we’re happy to share that this month, we’ve moved to a new office — to Suite 3b at Rossett Business Village. This new space is a big step for us and a wonderful milestone in our long history.

Haswells has been part of Wrexham for over 150 years, beginning life back in the late 1800s. Over all those years, we’ve seen a lot of change, and we’ve always adapted along the way. We’ve gone from traditional ways of doing things to using the latest tools and technology. Our history shows that we’re dedicated to providing good service, learning new things, and always putting our clients first.

Our new office isn’t just a change of address — it’s a symbol of how much we’re growing and moving forward. The space is modern and comfortable, perfect for our talented team to keep delivering top-quality accounting, tax planning, and business advice. It’s also designed to encourage teamwork and fresh ideas, so we can come up with even better solutions for our clients. Plus, it has plenty of free parking and is easy

to reach for people in Wrexham, Chester, and beyond!

At Haswells, we’ve always promised to give our clients the best service — on time, efficiently, and in a way that suits their needs. Our team works hard and enjoys what we do, and that positive energy shows in every bit of advice or help we provide.

Moving to this new office is more than just a change of location — it’s a sign of where we’re headed. We’re excited to grow, improve, and continue serving our clients better than ever. We look forward to welcoming everyone into our new space and to many more years of success together.

Here’s to new beginnings, exciting opportunities, and a future filled with growth and good service. We’re happy to start this next chapter at Haswells, and we look forward to sharing it with you!

Puzzles Powered by Symbols

Starting this month in EssentialsMAG, you’ll find puzzles from MiiM (MI Instant Messaging) - a unique, multi-platform picture language made up of simple symbols called ‘Pictrons’ (electronic pictures). MiiM allows users to communicate without the need for words, giving everyone the freedom to express themselves clearly and creatively.

This symbolic language is especially helpful for young people with dyslexia, ADHD or autism, offering an accessible alternative to traditional, letter-based communication.

MiiM was created by Timm Harriss, who recognised he was dyslexic from a young age and was later diagnosed with autism. Inspired by his own experiences, Timm has made it his life’s mission to help others communicate more easily. His dream is to see this powerful language in everyday use, enabling people of all ages and abilities to be understood – whatever their circumstances. Whether you live with dyslexia, ADHD, autism, have experienced a stroke or live with another neurological condition, MiiM offers a way to communicate without barriers

Guessmiim

MiiM Media’s first app, Guessmiim, brings the language to life through an inclusive and entertaining guessing game, where players try to work out what the Pictrons are describing. It’s suitable for all ages and abilities, regardless of reading level.

“We’re proud of the response to Guessmiim,” says Timm Harriss. “We believe the MiiM language will empower millions more

people to communicate freely. With strong investment secured at launch, we’re excited about the future of this inclusive communication tool.”

Guessmiim is available to play seven days a week at: www.guessmiim.com, and you can find out more about the MiiM language at miimmedia.com.

Don’t forget to look out for the latest MiiM puzzle in each issue, starting below...

Cookies

You’ve probably noticed it by now - nearly every website you visit these days pops up with a message asking you to “accept cookies”. It’s become second nature to click “yes” and move on. But have you ever wondered what these cookies actually are?

What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files that websites store on your device (laptop, phone, tablet). Their job is to remember bits of information about what you’re doing on the site and how you’re accessing it – generally to make your online experience smoother. For example, let’s say you’re shopping online and add a few things to your basket – but you don’t check out straight away. Next time you go back to that website, the items are still waiting. That’s thanks to cookies. They also come in handy for keeping you logged in, saving your preferences (like language or region), and making things run a bit more seamlessly.

Why do websites use them?

There are three main reasons:

• Essential cookies: These store important information that keeps the website functioning correctly. Without them, some features might not work properly. They don’t track you for marketing purposes.

• Performance cookies: These collect data on how the site’s being used – which pages are popular, what visitors click on, and so on. It’s all about helping the people behind the website improve the experience.

• Tracking/advertising cookies: This is where it gets more personal. These follow your browsing habits (often across multiple websites) to show you ads tailored to your interests. If you paused on an advert for a new jumper yesterday, don’t be surprised if it follows you around online today.

Why do I have to “accept” them?

Because some cookies collect personal data, websites need your permission to use them – especially those used for advertising or sharing information with third parties. That’s why you’ll often see cookie banners asking you to accept or manage your preferences. More recently, you might have noticed banners that don’t disappear until you make a choice. This is largely due to GDPR and stricter rules around “implied consent” no longer being enough.

Do I need to worry?

Not really. Cookies aren’t harmful – and many of them genuinely make life online easier. But if you’d rather not be tracked for advertising, you can usually say no to those specific cookies. Most browsers also let you adjust your privacy settings if you want more control. So next time that cookie message pops up, at least you’ll know what it actually means – and what you’re agreeing to… or not!

Beautiful Budapest

I have recently returned from Budapest: easy to reach from Manchester or Liverpool, it is often described as the "Pearl of the Danube" and is a city brimming with history, architecture, and culture.

Here are my top tips to make the most of your visit by exploring its key attractions whilst soaking up its unique atmosphere.

• Buda Castle: Walk, or take the funicular railway - to this UNESCO World Heritage site and stroll through its cobblestone streets whilst marvelling at the stunning views.

• Fisherman’s Bastion: A short walk from Buda Castle, this neo-Gothic terrace offers panoramic views of the city skyline.

• Hungarian Parliament Building: Take a guided tour of one of the largest and most iconic parliament buildings in the world.

• St. Stephen’s Basilica: A masterpiece of Neoclassical architecture, the Basilica also offers a dome climb for panoramic city views.

• The Great Synagogue: The world’s largest outside New York, it houses the Hungarian Jewish Museum and Archives as well as the Holocaust Tree of Life Memorial.

• Heroes’ Square and City Park: Explore the statues of Hungarian leaders before heading into City Park, home to Vajdahunyad Castle and the Széchenyi Thermal Baths - these pools are among the largest in Europe.

• Andrássy Avenue: An elegant boulevard lined with shops, cafés and the Hungarian State Opera House - I enjoyed a superb performance of Donizetti's Maria Stuarda and prices are very reasonable.

• Central Market Hall: Wander through Budapest’s largest indoor market to sample local delicacies like lángos - a flatbread, famous for its crispy texture and savoury fillings.

• Danube River Cruise: Choose a sunset or dinner cruise for an unforgettable experience as the city lights up.

• Ruin Bars: these started to appear in 1999 inside the Jewish Quarter's dilapidated buildings that would have otherwise been demolished. They are now an integral part of Budapest’s nightlife, known for their eclectic and bohemian vibe.

Freetour.com offer a choice of walking tours: a tip for the excellent, informative and humorous guide at the end is expected but definitely well worth it!

The Budapest Castle Bus is also a great way of seeing this area: it costs 15 Euros for the day and includes 23 attraction stops.

Wrexham Tourism News

With this summer’s National Eisteddfod fast approaching, we are busy working on our plans for the ‘Wrexham village’. This will be a part of the Maes where you’ll find all things Wrexham, including our Visitor Information Shop team and our This is Wrexham team, with competitions, local produce and ideas for those visiting the show to explore the wider County this summer.

The Eisteddfod, with the potential to attract over 100,000 visitors to our area, takes place in Is-y-Coed between 2nd-9th August, and tickets are now on sale.

UK Media Getaway Conference

This month, we’re really proud to be hosting a press visit as part of the 2025 UK Media Getaway Conference in Chester.

With national and international interest in Wrexham as a leisure and business destination being so high, we’re pleased to collaborate with Marketing Cheshire to bring travel writers over to Wrexham and showcase some of our key visitor experiences.

Coverage like this in recent years has been so valuable to complement the awareness of the County as a great place to visit – and we can only see this continuing to develop over the coming months into 2026!

Shared Prosperity (SPF) Fund

As part of the recent Shared Prosperity (SPF) funding, we were delighted to see some of our tourism businesses receive support to take new projects forward. This included £700k for Xplore! in town to install a new Planetarium amongst other works. In addition, the This is Wrexham tourism partnership received funding to undertake a large programme of national marketing, and as a Local Authority, we had support from Welsh Government to improve our city centre visitor signage and wayfinding. Look out for it starting to appear this Autumn!

Chirk Castle

Finally, the Summer of Play arrives again at Chirk Castle this month! From Sat 19th July, young adventurers can unleash their creativity in a huge play zone with interactive activities designed to spark imagination, with straw bales to climb and dens to build. Sounds great fun!!

Keep an eye on our @thisiswrexham socials this summer to hear about more events, ideas for summer and a lot more!

Blood Pressure Statistics

High blood pressure – often called the 'silent killer' – affects one in four adults in the UK. At Natural Balance Physiotherapy, we believe it’s time to act. Understanding what contributes to high blood pressure and making small, manageable lifestyle changes can have a big impact on your long-term health.

We treat the whole body, and that means supporting you in understanding high blood pressure’s causes – and helping you take control without relying solely on medication. Safer, more affordable, and more sustainable approaches are often within reach.

Common causes of high blood pressure:

• Poor diet: High salt, sugar, and processed food intake can raise blood pressure.

• Inactivity: Sedentary lifestyles contribute significantly to hypertension.

• Obesity: Excess weight puts strain on the heart, increasing blood pressure.

• Stress: Ongoing stress can cause spikes in blood pressure over time.

• Alcohol & smoking: Both are known to raise blood pressure and harm overall health.

• Genetics: A family history of hypertension increases your risk, making regular monitoring important.

Steps toward a healthier lifestyle:

• Balanced nutrition: Adopt diets rich in vegetables, fruit, whole grains, and low-fat dairy. Consider the DASH diet – a proven method for managing blood pressure.

• Stay active: Aim for 150 minutes of moderate exercise weekly. Activities like walking, swimming, or cycling are excellent choices.

• Weight management: Even modest weight loss can reduce your blood pressure significantly.

• Stress reduction: Mindfulness, yoga, and breathing exercises can lower stressrelated spikes.

• Limit alcohol and quit smoking: Reducing intake and getting support to quit smoking can have a major impact.

• Check your blood pressure regularly: Early detection can help prevent complications.

• Practice kindness: To yourself and others. It’s a simple, free way to support mental and physical health.

At Natural Balance, we’re here to guide and support you in making lasting changes. By working together, we can help you reduce your risk and contribute to improving the UK’s worrying blood pressure statistics.

Gardening Tips and Advice

July - Summer is Progressing

This is often one of the hottest months of the year and a great time to sit out and enjoy your garden. Keep plants looking good by regularly dead-heading and you'll enjoy a longer display of blooms. Make sure you keep new plants well watered, using grey water where possible and hoe off weeds, which thrive in the sunshine.

TOP 10 JOBS TO DO IN THE GARDEN THIS MONTH

1. Check clematis for signs of clematis wilt

2. Care for houseplants while on holiday

3. Water tubs and new plants if dry, but be water-wise

4. Deadhead bedding plants and repeat-flowering perennials, to ensure continuous flowering

5. Pick courgettes before they become marrows

6. Treat apple scab

7. Clear algae, blanket weeds and debris from ponds and keep them topped-up

8. Order catalogues for next year’s spring-flowering bulbs

9. Give the lawn a quick-acting summer feed (but don't feed wildflower patches or meadows)

10. Harvest apricots, peaches and nectarines.

Where are all the butterflies?

Following the results of the Big Butterfly Count 2024, Butterfly Conservation has declared a butterfly emergency, warning that many much-loved species are now in serious decline. This is a wake-up call about the health of our natural world - and they need your help more than ever before. Strawberries Macerated With Balsamic Vinegar & Basil

Nothing says summertime more than fresh British strawberries! This month’s seasonal dish is more a collection of good ingredients than a recipe and is my go-to easy summertime dessert.

Buy good quality 8 year old balsamic and adjust suggested quantities to taste depending on the sweetness of the strawberries. A dollop of creme fraiche, yogurt, mascarpone or vanilla ice cream works well on the side.

INGREDIENTS:

500g strawberries

6 tsp aged balsamic

2 tsp icing sugar (adjust to taste)

Handful of basil leaves

PREP: 5 minutes SERVES: 4

MACERATING: 60 minutes

Trying out our recipe? Share your photos with us on Facebook @EssentialsMag Wrexham

METHOD:

Remove tops and cut strawberries in half.

Add balsamic and icing sugar.

Mix well and leave covered in the fridge for an hour.

Mix fresh basil leaves at the end and serve with a dollop of creme fraiche or similar!

Seasonal Treats in July

In the heat of the summer, you can’t beat home-grown ingredients that are totally in sync with our seasons. Here’s our pick for July, from juicy broad beans to the sweetly tart tang of fresh cherries, and the best way to enjoy the spectacular globe artichoke…

Broad beans

British broad beans are available from May to September. At the start of the season, the small, tender beans can be eaten in their pods, a bit like sugar snaps, but as summer progresses, they get bigger and a bit tougher, which means a little prep work.

Start by snapping off one end of the pod and “zipping” it open, then run your thumb along to scoop out the beans. Add to a pan of boiling water for a couple of minutes, then drain and rinse in cold water. You’ll now be able to squeeze off the dull outer skins to reveal the bright green juicy beans inside. Finally, boil again for three to six minutes until tender, drain and serve whole with pasta or risotto, or mash with black pepper, garlic, olive oil and lemon juice.

Summer fruits: cherries and currants

British cherries are a true summer treat, but only available for a few short weeks in June and July. If you don’t like dealing with the stones, get yourself a cherry and olive pitter/stoner - it will be a game-changer!

Blackcurrants and redcurrants are usually available from June to early September. With a naturally high pectin content, both varieties make good jam, and they are wonderful in a summer pudding.

Globe artichoke

The globe artichoke is no relation to the knobbly Jerusalem artichoke, (which is actually a variety of sunflower). There’s a clue to its origins in the shape of its bulbous head – it’s actually a member of the thistle family, and, funnily enough, it does have a somewhat prickly reputation when it comes to cooking and eating.

Herbs

The seasonal glut does not end at just fruit and vegetables. There are a ton of herbs in season right now too. Basil, chervil, chives, coriander, dill, thyme, to name a few.

July Shopping List

Beetroot, Broccoli, Broad Beans, Cabbages, Carrots, Cauliflower, Cucumber, French & Runner Beans, Fennel, Globe Artichoke, Lettuce, New Potatoes, Peas and Sugarsnaps, Radishes, Shallots, Spinach, Tomatoes

Blackcurrants, Blueberries, Cherries, Gooseberries, Raspberries, Redcurrants, Rhubarb, Strawberries, Whitecurrants

Legal Advice

Protect your retail staff from abuse and protect your business future

Rarely a week passes these days without a retailer reporting a theft, or even worse, reporting that a member of staff has been subjected to violence, threats or abuse.

If you are one of those retailers you will know only too well how hard it is to fulfil your legal obligation as an employer, to ensure the safety of your staff. But how proactive are you in developing strategies to prevent and manage violent incidents and create a safer workplace for staff?

By doing everything you can to counter the current violent behaviour trend that affects retail staff and customers alike, you will also be protecting yourself against being taken to an employment tribunal.

So, what measures can you take?

Reviewing your store layout to make products and aisles as visible as possible is a good first move. Installing CCTV cameras to cover high risk areas and entrances and exits will not only act as a deterrent but will also provide evidence if there is an incident.

Carrying out and regularly reviewing risk assessments is an absolute must as they will identify key triggers for problem areas and vulnerable hotspots for staff, particularly when they are working alone. If there is an incident, staff need to understand the procedures for handling and reporting it, so you need to provide them with training and guidance, both of which should be refreshed regularly.

A further useful area of staff training is customer interaction and conflict management. Teach them to proactively engage with customers and demonstrate de-escalation techniques such as active listening and assertive communication. Being able to recognise early signs of aggression, for example unusual body language, avoiding eye contact, erratic behaviour, will give them an early advantage.

As well as arming your staff with training tools to handle a worst-case scenario, they will also need access to post incident support in the event that there is an incident. You can further show your support by adopting a zerotolerance policy on abuse and making it publicly displayed. Remember, staff who feel valued will be loyal and act in your best interests.

Lesley Griffiths MS

Member of the Senedd for Wrexham

Many readers will be aware of the Wrexham Miners Project and the wonderful work it does in helping preserve our mining history and heritage. After a challenging period in which the future of the building was under threat, the centre on Maesgwyn Road is now a thriving community hub, housing a café, museum, an arts and events space and a memorial in remembrance of the 266 miners who died in the Gresford Colliery disaster.

The restoration is ongoing and the entire team, led by the brilliant George Powell, deserves a huge amount of praise. Their latest ambitious project, entitled ‘Lost in the Dark’, is aiming to erect a memorial in every local community and village around Wrexham affected by the Gresford Mining disaster.

I had the honour of unveiling the first memorial on Green Road in Brymbo directly opposite the former home of Ernest Edwards. Ernest was just 16 years old when he lost his life and although record keeping at the time wasn’t entirely reliable, it is believed he was the youngest person to die in the tragedy.

Credit must go to Margaret Jones of The North Wales Miners Association Trust who has searched and cross checked the records and archives to obtain the most accurate information possible.

It is hoped the project will be completed over the next couple of years and if any families wish to help with the creation of

the Lost in the Dark memorials, please contact the Wrexham Miners Project.

Based at their studio at the former Kings Mill Visitor Centre, the Wrexham Academy of Screen Acting (WASA) is passionate about helping aspiring actors develop the skills they need for film, TV and digital media. They’re doing some amazing work in the community and I recently visited the team as they wrapped up working and filming with Caia Park Neets. Their short film, ‘CAIA’ was debuted at Focus Wales and it was amazing to see what they produced in such a short space of time.

WASA is also working with award winning screenwriter and playwright, Peter Cox MBE on a project that will focus on the Gresford Mining disaster.

Wrexham is in the spotlight like never before. The city’s arts and creative industry is growing and the Wrexham Academy of Screen Acting has a big part to play.

Hugh Jones & Ross Shepherd Councillors for Rossett

Hedge cutting

The council has been issuing advisory letters to landowners whose hedges are overgrown and affecting the use of pavements or limiting visibility for drivers. If necessary work is not undertaken, landowners will be charged for the council having to undertake the job.

Pop-up signs

We are getting numerous complaints about advertising placards and estate agent signs being put up and left. These signs will be removed if placed on public property without prior arrangement.

Speeding

We are both in touch with North Wales Police about the issues surrounding speeding in certain hotspots in the village including Burton Road and Holt Road through Trevalyn. We have been ensured further speed checks will take place, along with council officers investigating remedial measures which could be sanctioned to improve this problem.

Parking on the pavements

We are still receiving many emails and calls about inconsiderate parking on pavements which results in blocked driveways, poor visibility and stopping pedestrians from passing safely. We are in constant dialogue with North Wales Police who are monitoring the situation and will issue fixed penalty notices to offenders.

The Green

Highways are monitoring the traffic flow around The Green at present. At times the

area can become quite congested and a number of residents have expressed concerns about parking in the area.

Japanese Knotweed

If Japanese knotweed is identified, it is important it is attended to as quickly as possible to stop it spreading as it can grow rapidly. It is an offence to allow it to grow from your own land to another.

Cobblers/Llyndir Lane

We have been pressing officers to carry out remedial work to a number of areas of both Llyndir and Cobblers Lane. This includes repairing gullies and making good the road surface. We are hoping for work to start shortly.

Picnic in the Park

It was great to see so many residents attend ‘Picnic in the Park’ last month. It was a lovely occasion bringing the village together which was enjoyed by all. Many thanks to Rossett Community Council for organising the event.

Beryl Blackmore

Councillor for Marford & Hoseley

Well, here I am late sending in my July article and yet I am a lady of leisure as I have finished my year as Mayor! I am still happily very busy and I have lots of wonderful memories and many items to display. Should you like to see them I am more than happy to come and talk to groups with no cost to me. I would give any donations received to a local charity.

As I write this, we will see sailors from HMS Dragon descend on Wrexham tomorrow (13th June) as they have been granted Freedom of the City. This will be their first parade. We now own a Type 45 air defence destroyer named ‘Dragon’ - its main role is protecting fellow ships. The ship has recently had an overhaul and is moored in Canning Dock, Liverpool. I am hearing it may be possible to have a tour and, if so, I will fill you in when I have more details.

Main items constantly on the agenda are school budgets, housing, parking and social care. All are very demanding services and it's a busy hard time trying to budget and still maintain services at an acceptable level.

There is still plenty going on in Wrexham with volunteer groups supporting Wellbeing hubs, clubs for both young and elderly. The Hub in Crown Building, Avow in Trinity Street and Wrexham Library are good places for information.

Planning applications take up time at Community Council meetings together with finance, grass cutting, maintenance at Gresford Cemetery etc. Marford swings require maintenance, and the safety officer has visited the Marford Zebra Crossing. I am keen to improve the crossing so plenty to discuss. We do have a vacancy for a Community Councillor in Marford, so let us know if this would interest you.

Wrexham is getting ready to host the National Eisteddfod, which is being held on the outskirts of the city from August 2nd to 9th. A plea to the residents of Marford and Gresford to decorate the outside of their homes two weeks before to celebrate and welcome the Eisteddfod. During the same week, the Scarecrow Trail will run and the theme is ‘Welsh’. It is hoped that visitors to Wrexham will come and take part in the Trail and visit our village landmarks.

Over and out! Take care. You know how to contact me - via my Wrexham County Borough email. Thank you.

Jeremy Kent Councillor for Gresford

Welcome to my July update for EssentialsMAG. I am not too sure what has happened to the sunny weather, but I hope residents have a fantastic summer whatever the forecast each day.

There are a number of issues to cover in this edition to ensure that we can all enjoy the village this summer.

Parking

(again!)

There continues to be issues with inconsiderate parking across the village. We all understand that with more cars on the roads, and infrastructure not built for them, parking can be difficult, but please ensure that when parking, you are keeping to the Highway Code. Cars continue to park on double yellow lines, pavements and verges, or blocking in driveways.

I am glad to recently see my calls for better enforcement taken up, with wardens having been seen dealing with incorrect parking. I am still waiting on budget confirmation for the parking scheme in Newtown/Parsonage Close.

Streetscene

We have seen some long awaited work in the village. The uneven and broken path on the corner of Clappers Lane has now been resurfaced, site meetings have taken place at two sites for flooding and we have seen work done on verges and overgrowth.

Can I please remind residents that hedges in gardens that grow and cover paths and walkways are the responsibility of house owners and they should take care to ensure

that they are properly maintained and cut back. Serving notice is something we can do, but wastes time and money, so please make sure you keep them maintained.

Anti-Social Behaviour

Summer always seems to bring some form of anti-social behaviour. It is important that residents of all ages enjoy the village respectfully, and while on the whole most do, there are some that cause issues for others.

In order to address incidents of anti-social behaviour effectively, we have a strong partnership with North Wales Police.

If you see anti-social behaviour you can report it by calling 101 (999 in emergencies) or online www.northwales.police.uk and click ‘report’.

As always, no issue is too small so if you have anything that you wish to raise, then please do not hesitate to get in touch. I am always happy to hear from residents or catch up with people as I am out and about in the village.
