In the name of the Sisters of Charity, the Board of Directors, the staff and residents, it is my privilege to share with you this 2021-2022 Biennial Report of the Elizabeth Seton Residence.
The health of any organization is essentially related to the dedication and expertise of its administrators and staff. With that as a measure, Elizabeth Seton Residence is thriving under the capable leadership of Ms. Lori Ferrante and her colleagues. There is no surprise in stating that the past three years have been extraordinarily challenging for healthcare facilities, Elizabeth Seton Residence included. The Covid-19 pandemic and its related issues put enormous stress on healthcare professionals, with many leaving the profession. Yet, ESR, under the same pressures, has been able to maintain its 5-star quality rating with the Centers for Medicare/Medicaid Services (CMS) as well as being recognized as a Top Performing Skilled Nursing Facility by US News & World Report in both Short Term Rehabilitation and Long Term Care categories for the 10th year in a row! What a wonderful tribute to those who serve our residents!
As Covid has subsided, ESR has been able to reestablish its dynamic group programming, inviting guest artists to entertain our residents, or engage them in activities. Very specially, families have been able to share holiday meals with loved ones as visiting restrictions became more relaxed.
In September, 2022 Sister Judith Breen, the administrator of Marillac Residence – the Level IV Rest Home that shares the Wellesley campus – retired from her position to return to Canada. Her departure provided Legacy Lifecare, the facilities’ management company, the opportunity to reorganize senior management of both Elizabeth Seton and Marillac Residences. The vision was to create a CEO position which would be responsible for both licensed facilities. The administrators of each of these facilities would be accountable to this CEO. Even though the facilities remain separate, this new structure would assist in streamlining operations, enable more shared services, and establish a better sense of unity between both operations. Lori Ferrante, happily, accepted the CEO position as well as remaining the Executive Director of ESR.
As you will see in the report, our Director of Development, Judy Coogan, has been working diligently. The Fall “Meet the Need” virtual auctions were very successful. Our Boston Marathon runners, Abby McKie and Laura Cannistraro, exceeded their fundraising goals. A number of grants were sought and obtained. Many hands support our mission, not least of which are yours, our donors.
As we look to the future, we are hope-filled and confident that as some challenges have abated, ESR will continue to flourish as it moves forward. We are grateful for all who have made ESR the wonderful home it is for our loved ones.

TO CREATE AN ATMOSPHERE WHERE ALL FEEL WELCOME AND RESPECTED
Welcome to the 2021 - 2022 Biennial Report of Elizabeth Seton Residence. The past two years proved to be years that tested our resilience. Despite the adversity and uncertainty that COVID presented, we continued to strive for excellence amidst very challenging circumstances. We were put to the test and the mettle of our staff prevailed. I am proud to say that we have weathered the storm and have emerged stronger as we carry out our mission of delivering the finest healthcare possible with compassion and dignity in an atmosphere where all feel welcome and respected.
As I write this letter, I do so with gratitude. I am proud of our accomplishments, confident in our abilities, inspired by our extraordinary staff and the community that continues to support us. I am also grateful for you, our generous supporters and families. You embrace us in our mission with a steadfast commitment and we are most thankful for your continued vote of confidence.
You will see across the pages of this Biennial Report that despite two dizzying years of constant regulatory and pandemic changes, our staff never wavered in their focus on caring for our residents, and one another. It has been wonderful to watch our residents emerge from COVID restrictions, coming together for engaging group activities, attending Mass in the Chapel, and embracing the joy of being together in community. The happy laughter, music, smiles and social banter are now daily occurrences! Our residents are not just passing time here, they are thriving. We are all moving forward, ready and prepared for whatever tomorrow will bring.
We remain driven by our unwavering mission of providing compassionate care to those we have the opportunity to serve. You are an integral part of this effort, and we are most grateful for your support. Thank you so very much.
Sincerely,
“With faith and love, we remember the lives and efforts of all at Elizabeth Seton Residence affected by the COVID Pandemic.” We were grateful to finally gather together for a Celebration of Life and Memorial Tree Dedication in May of 2021. Families and staff gathered in our courtyard to honor those we lost when the pandemic hit. Lori Ferrante welcomed everyone, noting much had been missed this past year...including the opportunity to say goodbye.
The singing from our nurse Marie was beautiful, while reflections and prayers from our Chaplain Tanya, Director of Nursing Rose, Nurse Practitioner Nancy, and family member Father Hickey warmed our hearts. Families added their own message to stones inscribed with the names of those lost. As a violinist and cellist from the Wellesley Symphony Orchestra played, each stone was placed in a basket by family members, as names were read and remembered. At the conclusion of the ceremony, the stones were carefully placed around the memorial tree. When the tree blooms each Spring, we will recall with love, those who were lost, and remember the grace, strength, compassion and courage of the staff who served them, and all our residents, throughout the pandemic.
I am from a small town called Au Borgne, north of Haiti. My family and I left Haiti because we were being persecuted by the Haitian army. Thankfully, I have now been living in the United States for many years. During this time, I became a certified nursing assistant. In 2001, my husband and I moved to Massachusetts where I enrolled in Roxbury Community College to pursue my associate in science degree in health care.
In 2018, I joined the Elizabeth Seton Residence as a certified nursing assistant (CNA) where I developed a special bond with the residents. That led to my decision to enroll in nursing school. In 2021, I received confirmation that I had passed my board exams. After I received the news, the first person I called was Rose DiMonda, the ESR Director of Nursing to let her know that I was now a licensed practical nurse! In the beginning, I was nervous about my new role, but over time I grew confident in my skills and abilities. Elizabeth Seton is an amazing place for a new nurse to start a career. ESR has inspired me to purse my nursing education even further thanks to all the administrators and staff who are so incredibly kind and supportive.
Hercilia Bernard, LPN Elizabeth Seton ResidenceComing from a hospital background, Elizabeth Seton Residence has a very different, welcoming sense of home. I enjoy a special, far more personal connection with each of the residents and I take that to heart. My team and I ensure that ESR is environmentally safe and accessible for residents and their families. This is fundamentally important for their happiness and quality of life. We are vigilant with key initiatives such as infection control and staff training, along with the new challenges of a post-Covid world. We are proud of what we do and we renew that effort each and every day for the comfort of our residents.
Christopher Rivas Director of Environmental ServicesIt has been my joy to join the Elizabeth Seton Residence team. I have the privilege of being with residents and families during some of the most sacred and precious moments in life. The faith and good will that are integral parts of this community are things that daily inspire me and remind me of the words of St. Francis, “it is in giving that we receive”.
Erin Mahadeo Director of Spiritual CareI began my time at Elizabeth Seton Residence 12 years into my nursing career. I grew up and always worked on the North Shore so this was a fun transition and a little closer to the city. I was given the opportunity to manage the short-term rehab patients along with long-term residents. I find myself watching the nurses and CNA’s on my floor care compassionately every day for those who reside at ESR or come for a short stay to regain strength and knowledge as they prepare to return home.
I am proud of the work we do here at ESR - always ensuring the residents and patients have what they need. It is a pleasure being able to watch their lives evolve from coming here from the hospital to our team being able to assist them back to health so they can go home safely. At the same time, we also have the pleasure of comforting patients and families in their times of need and the compassion is what really makes a difference.
Aja Whitaker, RN, MSN Second Floor Unit ManagerI see great success stories every day. I am honored to be part of a team that serves people when they are at their weakest and most vulnerable. Watching them heal and progress to accomplish things they never thought they could, is why I love my work.
I began my career at ESR four years ago as an occupational therapy student in clinical rotations. ESR invested in me and fostered an environment where I could grow and learn. After working as an Occupational Therapist, I recently transitioned into my new role as the Director of Rehabilitation. I am excited to lead a team of physical therapists, occupational therapists and speech therapists, who work together with the nursing staff to develop individual rehab programs for each resident. It’s a lot of responsibility, but seeing people get better and return to home or a long-term care community gives us all great job satisfaction. What we do makes a difference and we are proud of that.
Meredith Madigan, OTR/L Director of RehabilitationAfter my youth in the Cape Verde Islands, I emigrated to the United States. I married and navigated the parallel journeys of raising my 3 children, helped to grow my husband’s business and pursued my career in nursing. Throughout the years I have often found myself with hands full, but joyfully managing it all. My career has taken me to one of the finest teaching hospitals, but my heart now lies at Elizabeth Seton Residence.
I am honored to be a member of a team that focuses on resident-centered care, and colleagues who are dedicated, respectful and approachable. We strive to remain current in a rapidly changing world. We are focused on solving issues that arise with thoughtfulness and transparency. I am proud of the work we do at ESR and the exemplary care of our residents.
Carlota Fagundo, RN Assistant Director of NursingAs the Director of Facilities, it is my responsibility to oversee facilities operations, manage staff and budgets, direct routine maintenance, respond to emergencies, manage risk, act as a liaison between contractors and conduct site inspections. Safety is our top priority.
I am proud of a staff that possesses a fantastic work ethic and it is a pleasure to maintain Elizabeth Seton Residence and the Mount St. Vincent campus in an impeccable manner. I love my job and being a part of the ESR family that serves our residents.
Hugo Berganza Director of FacilitiesMy appreciation for ESR and the community that supports us continues to grow with each passing year. Elizabeth Seton has given my team and I the opportunity to be creative, interactive and inventive. And, at the end of the day, when the residents are happy, it’s a job well done! They bring so much joy and a zest for life to each activity, they are an inspiration to us all. The residents teach us how to live well, and that’s a gift that lasts a lifetime.
Nicolette Lanceleve Director of ActivitiesWe partnered with the Elmwood Christian Preschool (Wellesley) for Project Nana once again for Christmas of 2021 & 2022! We were delighted to receive festive LED Christmas Candles that came accompanied by colorful artwork from the children - one for each resident! Smiles were plentiful as the candles and art were distributed. Many thanks to the Teachers, Families and Children for lighting both our rooms, and our hearts, with Christmas joy!
December 2021 - Lasell University fashion design and production student Nicolas Brown ’22 created pillows for hospice patients at the Elizabeth Seton Residence. Assistant Professor of Fashion Gail Jauregui supported Brown throughout the project.
“Using threads from our on-campus fabric closet, Nicolas single handedly completed this community service effort,” said Jauregui. He used a variety of techniques, including painting, embroidering, and embellishing to create custom pillows for the recipients. Since patient mobility is often limited in hospice, body temperatures can drop. The pillows help stimulate circulation and add much needed warmth, in addition to alleviating muscle and joint soreness.”
“I believe you make someone happy in any stage of their life, even in their final days,” says Brown. “I hope that as a result of this effort the patients feel comfortable and respected.”
In February of 2021, we also received a wonderful gift of handmade Valentine drawings and a sweet treat flower (made from a lollipop) from our friends at the Elmwood Christian Preschool. Clearly made with love, the gifts brightened the day for our residents. Everyone received a Valentine and enjoyed comparing the hand-colored masterpieces.
December 2021 - Many thanks to the Wellesley Hills Junior Women’s Club for joining their children in Christmas Caroling! We used outdoor microphones and indoor speakers, with children outside and residents gathered inside at the patio windows and looking down from the Solarium so all could see and hear the fun! And oh what fun - when they shifted from traditional carols to Mariah Carey. We loved their dance moves too! Thank you!
It was Girl Scout Cookie Time in March of 2021 and 2022, thanks to our generous friends from the Wellesley Mothers Forum and their donation of cookies for our residents and staff! The WMF women once again demonstrated "She wears a G for Generosity"!
We are fortunate to continue our partnership with the MassBay Nursing Program, providing a geriatric clinical rotation site to train future health care professionals.
In 2022, Russian Federation invaded my native country, Ukraine. As the Russian military forces rolled into Ukraine, murdering thousands of civilians, reducing entire cities into rubble, and forcing millions of Ukrainians to flee across the borders, the world witnessed the beginning of the biggest war in Europe since WWII. That day, my inner world collapsed, but I was not alone in my sorrow.
From the first hours of the invasion, I received tremendous support from Elizabeth Seton Residence and Marillac Residence; and I continue to experience the kindness and thoughtfulness of everyone who works, lives, and rehabilitates here. Our management team, Sisters of Charity, and colleagues offered their help, organized a donation drive for Ukraine, and decorated the building in blue and yellow to show their support for the people of Ukraine. Lori Ferrante offered to facilitate the donation drive for essential survival items, wound supplies, and pain medications. The generous donations were later delivered to a Ukrainian Church in Boston for shipment to Ukraine.
It warms my heart to know that these donations, collected at the heart of Wellesley at my workplace, made it to my home country. This act of kindness represents the love, care, and empathy with which Elizabeth Seton Residence and Marillac Residence operate every day. My place of work became my beacon of hope in the darkest times. I am truly blessed to work with so many kind, gentle, and caring people.
Many of our employees have family and friends in Haiti who were impacted by the 2021 earthquake. To provide support, our Nurse Manager Marie and Chaplain Tanya spearheaded “Tarps and Time for Haiti”, a project that invited staff to donate much-needed waterproof tarps, or dollars generated by donating from their vacation time banks. Specifically, 4 or 8 hours of earned vacation time could be donated, with ESR translating the hours into a cash donation. Over 60 hours of time were donated, resulting in a $2400 donation, in addition to many tarps and over $500 in cash! We partnered with Levo International, an organization that is providing aide and supplies to Haiti. Our tarps and funds were included in a boat shipment to Haiti. Team ESR... giving from the heart!
Thanks to the generosity of two friends and longtime supporters of ESR, we were able to raffle off an RV “Discover the Road” vacation to support Laura Cannistraro’s Boston Marathon run. The winner, Katy Abel and her husband, David Brenner, took to the road in Colorado and shared some photos of their great adventure!
“Imagine my surprise, showing up at Elizabeth Seton one day last February to visit my mother, only to discover that I’d just won Elizabeth Seton’s raffle for a one-week vacation in an RV! Wow. After much family discussion, my husband and I chose to visit the state of Colorado. We’d never been in an RV before, and as lifelong New Englanders, this western state was new terrain for us. We visited two amazing national parks: Mesa Verde, a UNESCO site of ancient Pueblo dwellings and artifacts, and Black Canyon of the Gunnison, a hidden gem with panoramic views of steep, deep gorges. We also made time to spend an afternoon at a mineral hot spring with beautiful mountain views. It was a great trip, and the activities staff made sure my mother got daily emailed dispatches from me. Thank you to the staff of Elizabeth Seton -- not only for the care and attention you give my Mom every day, but also for giving my husband and me a trip of a lifetime!”

The Wellesley Juniors have supported Elizabeth Seton Residence for many years, both with their volunteerism and grants for various resident-centered initiatives. Past grants include funds for a custom, wheel chair accessible games table, new televisions for the Country Kitchens and iPads for resident and family communication during the Covid-19 pandemic. We are most grateful for the Juniors’ generosity and commitment to Elizabeth Seton Residence. They are an amazing group of women whose support enhances the enjoyment our residents glean from everyday activities that benefit the body, mind and spirit.
In 2021, the Juniors presented Elizabeth Seton Residence with a grant for the
purchase of outdoor patio chairs for resident comfort, safety and enjoyment. This year more than any other, spending time outdoors was truly a mood-booster!
In 2022, the Juniors supported a photography project that highlighted
the lives of each of our residents. The Hand Project tells a story of each individual resident, a life story of what their hands have accomplished, built and achieved over the years. These hand photographs along with a narrative describing their life and what their hands represent are displayed in or near the resident’s room along with the story of their lives.
“Home is where you feel comfort and warmth and know you are safe and loved. The strength and foundation of that home comes from family. Elizabeth Seton Residence exemplifies that philosophy.
My mother, Dottie Lynch, was welcomed into the Elizabeth Seton family from her first encounter when we visited and walked the campus. She found wonderful companionship through her “neighbors” and she found opportunity to be involved and make a difference. The kindness of the staff and the many activities have enabled my mom to feel connected and find fun and enjoyment in her day. After four years of living in the Elizabeth Seton Residence and seeing how compassionately my mother is regarded, my family knows that our mother has been entrusted to a wonderful family. We are blessed.
In April of 2021, the Overhead Hoyer Lift Installation was completed. The Hoyer Lift System is an overhead transfer system that is used to physically move non-ambulatory residents between their bed and chair or wheelchair. Designed for resident safety and comfort, it is an essential tool for caregivers that has significantly improved resident safety and dignity.
The lifts are key to assisting mobility-challenged residents. These personal lifts were installed in each room and for those who require assistance, it eliminated the need to wait for a shared portable lift to become available. This lift system is also providing a quieter, smoother ride compared to our portable lifts. This has been successful in reducing the anxiety some of our residents experience and has improved the overall quality of care. We are so grateful to Diane & Albert Kaneb for their matching gift and to the donors who met the match and made it all possible.
In March of 2022, we were honored to be part of a very special 65th Wedding Anniversary celebration for two of our residents, Rosemary and Alan. They celebrated with an anniversary luncheon, followed by a ceremony to renew their vows. Residents and staff dressed for the occasion and joined family members in this emotional and joyous event - 65 years of love!
Fr. Connelly was honored at our 2018 Meet the Need Dinner. The venue was filled to capacity as Fr. Connelly’s friends gathered to pay tribute.
Fr. John J. Connelly was a dedicated friend of the Elizabeth Seton Residence. His kindness and generosity were all part of his longstanding connection to ESR and the Sisters of Charity. He regularly celebrated Mass in the Mount Saint Vincent Chapel. Always supportive of staff, he was interested in them as individuals, and appreciative of their dedication to our elder population.
A brilliant student and teacher, Fr. Connelly valued education. He attended the Boston Latin School and Boston College, taught at St. John’s Seminary and served in the United States Army.
Upon his passing in 2021, ESR received a bequest from his estate. Upon receiving his kind donation, we thought a fitting tribute would be to establish a Staff Education Fund in his memory. The Reverend John J. Connelly Education Fund allows us to provide scholarship funds to staff pursuing advanced education or certification in health care fields and ongoing staff education via seminars and continuing education. We welcome donations to the Fund to support staff education at a level that would not be possible without the generosity of friends such as Father Connelly.

“I cannot say enough about the amazing care, and support I received at Elizabeth Seton. The rehab, meals and staff put me on the road to recovery. I feel very blessed to have been able to stay for over three weeks after surgery and return home able to walk again after months on a walker and cane. We are so fortunate to have them in Wellesley.
Thanks Elizabeth Seton Residence.”

In both 2021 & 2022 we were honored to be recognized by US News & World Report for the 9th & 10th consecutive years.
We were privileged to host the confirmation ceremonies for St. Paul and St. John outdoors on the lawn in front of Elizabeth Seton Residence in April of 2021. Over 100 students received the sacrament in 6 ceremonies. The Holy Spirit was truly present on our campus! The confirmation instructors did a wonderful job, and the weather - mostly- cooperated. Happy to share our campus for this wonderful celebration!

Abby McKie
October 11, 2021
Running for ESR, Dining Services Director Abby McKie finished the 125th Boston Marathon in 4 hours, 5 minutes. Abby surpassed her fundraising goal, raising over $5,600 for our Dining with Dignity program. We cheered her on when she passed Washington Street sporting her hot pink Unidine Corporation shirt. With a big smile, she was easy to spot! Many thanks Town of Wellesley, Massachusetts for providing the charity bib.
Laura Cannistraro
April 18, 2022
Laura Cannistraro, running for ESR in honor of her grandparents and ESR residents, finished the 126th Boston Marathon in 3 Hours, 54 minutes, 37 seconds with an average pace of 8:30! While our signs greeted her in Wellesley, and some of us were along Washington Street to cheer her on, she had a whole campus of well-wishers supporting her all the way to Boston. Laura raised over $12,000 for ESR!
