As the chair of the Elizabeth Seton Residence Board, it is my honor to present this annual report, in the name of the Sisters of Charity, the Board itself, and the staff and residents of ESR. This task gives me time to reflect on a year in the life of a truly effective organization.

Words that come to mind are dedicated, compassionate, generous, available, caring, and very professional. Whether referring to those who keep the space immaculate, or those who do the hands-on healthcare work, or the chaplain, support staff or administrators, each one contributes to making ESR a home away from home for our residents, and gives assurance to families that their loved ones are safe and cared for. In helping to sustain this wonderful organization, our Development Director, Judy Coogan, and her committee have also worked tirelessly to search out grants, to plan and execute successful events like Meet the Need, recruiting a marathon runner for ESR (Thank you Sean Hynes), and other fundraising activities. We are blessed.

As all of us know, since Covid-19, the health care industry has suffered significant loss in retaining personnel. ESR has not been spared. However, our administrator, Lori Ferrante, has gone the extra mile to make sure shifts have been covered and care never compromised. I say this as a complement to Lori, but also to highlight our outstanding health care professionals who have taken on additional shifts or worked extra days. One might say, for most of our staff, ESR is not a job but a calling. We are blessed.

We are blessed, too, with you, our supporters, family and friends. As you will see in this report, your presence as visitors of loved ones and also participants in ESR activities, your in-kind and financial support, your love for our residents, have been essential to making ESR the exceptional facility it is.

With all of this people power and dedication Elizabeth Seton Residence confidently looks to the future to continue its mission to serve and care for those who live within the Residence.

2023 in Review 2023 Meet the Need Dinner Honoring Dr. Lucy Paniszyn On November 3, 2023, we were delighted to welcome the Elizabeth Seton Residence Community to our Meet the Need Dinner at the Wellesley Country Club. The dinner was a great success and we are thankful to all attendees, donors and sponsors. Ted Wayman was our emcee for the evening as we danced to the Bo Winiker Jazz Quartet.

Katy Abel, daughter of the late Lavinia Abel, a resident at ESR, gave a moving tribute to her mother and her care at Elizabeth Seton Residence.

We were pleased to honor Lucy C. Paniszyn, MD, for her dedication, kindness, and steadfast commitment to the Elizabeth Seton Residence. A caring clinician with exceptional expertise, she has also been a teacher, mentor, advocate and friend to our residents, their families, colleagues and staff. A beacon of light and comfort to so many during her time at ESR, she gave her heart and soul to the legions of residents in her care and her influence will be felt for years to come. Dr. Paniszyn made an everlasting impact on the people we serve. Her authenticity and deep caring for others is what makes her exceptional.

“I felt privileged to care for the patients and enjoyed teaching new interns and residents as well as students. I have remained at Newton-Wellesley Hospital for 40+ years, caring for generations of patients in the office as well as in the skilled nursing and rehab community. ESR continues to be such a special place, with the staff always engaged in the patients’ wellbeing. It is a true hidden gem in the area. I am honored to have been Medical Director and grateful to continue to play a part in caring for patients in such a wonderful community.”

- Lucy C. Paniszyn, In June of 2023, Dr. Paniszyn, stepped down from her position as Medical Director after seven years of providing medical leadership and caring, compassionate service.

She continues to serve as primary care physician for some of our residents. We are forever grateful.

We were delighted to welcome Japanese students from the Tokyo University of Social Welfare as part of their Harvard University study tour. These future psychologists and social workers toured Elizabeth Seton Residence, learned about the role of our social worker, and then spent time with residents and our friends from Marillac learning origami skills! We were honored to be part of their learning experience - and happy to share our smiles.

Our campus Juneteenth Celebration featured an inspirational and energetic concert by the talented Joyful Voices of Inspiration - A Boston Gospel Choir. We are grateful they shared their day with us!

Our friends at the Veritas Elmwood Preschool - Veritas Christian Academy in Wellesley sent each of our residents a lovely decorated lantern and handmade Christmas card, delivered in pretty gift bags!

We met our Preschool friends through Project Nana a few years ago and are grateful for our ongoing relationship! We appreciate the time and care children, parents and staff took to create such a thoughtful and loving gift. Smiles were everywhere as the children’s artwork was appreciated, and lanterns brought the warm spirit of Christmas throughout the Residence.

In December of 2023, the Wellesley Hills Junior Women’s Club joined our residents and family members for a fun “Mingle and Jingle” supper event! After enjoying a delicious festive supper, our residents and families enjoyed singing and entertainment from the Juniors and their children - smiles were everywhere!

We are also grateful to the Wellesley community for sharing their time and talent to spread holiday joy! Thank you to Wellesley Middle School students who sent wonderful handmade cards for our staff and residents.

A group of amazing singers from Wellesley’s Hardy Elementary School joined us for a festive afternoon of holiday songs. Many thanks to their teachers and parents for enabling such a fun gathering with our residents!

Veteran’s Day Celebration We were privileged to welcome Town of Wellesley Veterans for a visit with our residents. The Army, Navy and Marines were well-represented! They told their stories, then shared refreshments with us. The Mother of an active serviceman, and two of our Elizabeth Seton Residence Veterans also participated in the program. We appreciate our Veterans and were glad for the opportunity to thank them for their service!

Trained Nursing Assistant Program In 2023 we were honored to be recognized by US News & World Report for the 11th consecutive year.

In December of 2023 - we were again awarded this recogntion for 2024, our 12th year!

We were again fortunate to continue our partnership with the MassBay Nursing Program, providing a geriatric clinical rotation site to train future health care professionals.

Blessing of the Manger - Christmas 2023

ESR implemented a Trained Nursing Assistant program to help grow our team. After a combination of rigourous classroom and hands-on learning, seven successful graduates passed their test and joined our team of Certified Nursing Assistants!

Reverend John J. Connelly Education Fund We are grateful to all who supported the Reverend John J. Connelly Education Fund. Established with a generous gift from Fr. Connelly’s estate, and named in his honor, this fund is used for continuing education seminars and advanced clinical certification that we could not otherwise fund.

127th Boston Marathon April 17th, 2023 We are thankful to Sean Hynes, our 2023 Boston Marathon Charity Runner in support of Elizabeth Seton Residence. Sean ran the race in honor of his aunt, a long-time ESR resident.

We are also grateful to the Town of Wellesley for the charity bib.

Sean crossed the finish line with an official time of 4:06 and raised over $10,000 for new living room entertainment centers for our residents. We are also grateful to the Wellesley Hills Junior Women’s Club who generously donated new televisions for both living rooms.

Short-term rehab is an excellent way for seniors to get back on their feet after an injury or surgery. Our programs offer physical, occupational and speech therapy services that address specific issues to help seniors get back into their daily lives.

Our therapists work with residents and patients to help them recover from illness and surgical procedures to allow a sucessful return to home.
