Elizabeth Seton Residence

Skilled Nursing and Short-Term Rehabilitation Facility

“Cheerfulness prepares a glorious mind for all the noblest acts.”

A Ministry of the Sisters of Charity (Halifax)

Elizabeth Seton Residence Board

Once again it is time to share with you, our families, supporters, and donors, the wonderful work being done at Elizabeth Seton Residence. “Wonderful work” only happens because there is an exceptional administration and staff whose focus always is the care of the residents.

As the media continues to remind us, health care is in crisis. Staff shortages, increased requirements from insurance companies, and lots of paperwork burden all caregivers, ESR included. Yet, working under these same pressures themselves, our healthcare professionals and support staff go out of their way to make ESR a warm, caring, healing environment for residents primarily, but families too.

Among those dedicated professionals is our own Lori Ferrante. Under her leadership, ESR has maintained its CMS 5-star rating for the 12th consecutive year. US News and World Report has awarded ESR the designation of a “Best Long-Term Care and Short-Term Rehab” facility. This is a designation only 4% of facilities across the nation are granted. And maybe the most telling honor is employee satisfaction which named ESR as a Great Place to Work! ESR is blessed to have such an outstanding administrator and staff.

Judy Coogan, Director of Development, and her development committee have been tireless in seeking out grants and other financial supports for ESR. This year they stepped out of their (and our) comfort zone in suggesting a Casino Night as the major fundraiser for ESR. The event took place in the dining room of the Mount Saint Vincent campus. So many of the volunteers were staff members, just proving the point of their dedication and commitment to ESR. Molly Joyce, our Dining Services Director, and chefs Jeff Walker, Michael Milligan and Jim Connelly outdid themselves with preparation and presentation of the delicious hors d’oeuvres and finger foods. From the expert ambiance, the casino staff, the food, and the participants a very successful evening was had with a great spirit of fun and camaraderie.

This year the board will say goodbye to a staunch supporter and board member, Carl Rosenfield, Esq. Carl generously served 3 consecutive terms totalling nine years. He gifted the board, and by extension ESR, with a dry wit and an expertise in elder law. Carl will be missed.

To you our family members, friends and supporters we say thank you. Your presence with us, the residents and staff, and encouragement are so appreciated. Your enthusiasm for what happens on this campus is our best advertising. The Sisters of Charity, the Board of Directors, the administrators and staff, and myself as board chairperson, are grateful to you and confident that the future can only be better.

Wishing you and your families God’s blessing.

From the Executive Director & CEO

Mount St. Vincent

Wellesley Hills, Massachusetts

As the Executive Director and CEO of the Elizabeth Seton Residence, it is my privilege to lead an organization that is committed to delivering high quality care as we carry out our mission of treating everyone with dignity, respect and compassion. Recognized as a top-performing skilled nursing and shortterm rehabilitation facility on a national level, we are a collaboration, making a difference in the lives of all we serve, one person at a time.

The past year included the welcoming of our new Medical Director, Megan Callahan M.D., a Mass General Brigham physician from the Charter Group. Dr. Callahan provides stellar medical care and oversite of our programming. We are fortunate to have an exceptional medical team of physicians and nurse practitioners who work closely with our nurses. The ease of access and efficient communication from our medical team supports our efforts to ensure consistent, quality care for our residents.

As we welcome 2025, we embrace the growth of the short-term rehabilitation program as the post-acute rehab setting of choice for local residents and a preferred provider for all the hospital systems. We experienced an increase in admissions volume by 15% compared to 2023, reflecting shorter stays that require efficient, effective rehabilitation intervention to obtain exceptional outcomes. Our long term care program remains vibrant, with a focus on providing compassionate care, engaging activities, and a supportive home for our residents. However, the financial challenges inherent in any non-profit skilled nursing facility are ever present.

We are most grateful to you, our donors, who answered the call to “Meet the Need” through 2024 fundraising efforts. These efforts included our first Casino Night, which was a great success and a lot of fun! Grants and donations enabled the purchase of new living room televisions and a sound system for resident activities, in addition to the purchase of numerous specialized wheelchairs and equipment to enhance resident mobility and comfort. Many “quality of life” improvements such as these wouldn’t be possible without your generous donations.

We are launching our 2025 Spring Appeal with this Annual Report. Our current needs list includes the replacement and enhancement of rehabilitation equipment in our gym, as well as specialized medical equipment and furnishings that will enhance comfort and independence for our frail elders.

To everyone who makes the Elizabeth Seton Residence what it is today, our donors, our families and friends, and our amazing staff, we are most grateful. You help us bring joy to all we do! On behalf of those who call the Elizabeth Seton Residence home, a heartfelt thank you!

Walter Woods is Wellesley’s oldest resident at age 106, and the new holder of the ceremonial Boston Post Cane.

Excerpt from the Swellesley Report, December 30, 2024

“Walter Woods is Wellesley’s oldest resident at age 106, and the new holder of the ceremonial Boston Post Cane.

Town officials presented Walter with the cane and an official resolution at a small ceremony on December 30 at Elizabeth Seton Residence in Wellesley where he’s recovering from recent health issues. Members of Walter’s family and some of his favorite nurses attended the presentation, delighting the guest of honor who waved for photos and chatted with the “many pretty women.”

The Boston Post Cane tradition was established in 1909 by Edwin Grozier, editor and publisher of the Boston Post newspaper, who as a publicity stunt, mailed canes to towns throughout New England to be presented by officials to the oldest resident in their community.

Wellesley is one of a handful of towns that still has its original cane, made of ebony with a 14-karat gold head, and part of the Wellesley Historical Society’s permanent collection. The cane was previously held by Herlda Senhouse, who passed away in November 2024.”

*Walter Woods, passed away at the age of 106, on Jan. 2, 2025.

“I truly enjoy working with all the residents, short term rehabilitation patients and staff in such a positive and peaceful environment. I’ve been at ESR for a year and am pursuing my RN, BSN degree.”

We are so grateful for the support of our friends and neighbors in Wellesley. A special thanks to the Wellesley Hills Junior Women’s Club, the Wellesley Mother’s Forum, Newton Country Day, Wellesley Middle School, High School, Hardy Elementary, and the Elmwood Christian Preschool.

Halloween 2024 was a stellar event thanks to the Halloween parade of costumed cuties from the Wellesley Hills Junior Women’s Club and the Wellesley Mother’s Forum! We were also happy to host “Kids Got Talent”!

We were delighted to welcome Japanese students from the Tokyo University of Social Welfare as part of their Harvard University study tour. These future psychologists and social workers toured Elizabeth Seton Residence, learned about the role of our social worker, and then spent time with residents and our friends from Marillac learning origami skills! We were honored to be part of their learning experience - and happy to share our smiles.

ESR Residents painted these beautiful snow globes to raise money for St. John’s Wellesley Christmas Wish! This program grants special wishes for more than 400 children at Christmas.

In 2024 Elizabeth Seton Residence was honored to be recognized for the 12th consecutive year as a Top Performing Skilled Nursing Facility by US News & World Report in both Short Term Rehabilitation and Long Term Care categories. Just 420 facilities of over 15,000 evaluated nationally received this dual distinction, placing the Elizabeth Seton Residence in the top 3% nationally, based upon quality measures and outcomes utilized in the scoring criteria.

We were again fortunate to continue our partnership with the MassBay Community College Nursing Program, providing a geriatric clinical rotation site to train future health care professionals.

Director of Nursing, Rosalba DiMonda, RN, congratulates Sharnick A., a new graduate of our Trained Nursing Assistant Program with a Certificate of Recognition. After a combination of rigourous classroom and hands-on learning, Sharnick passed her test and joined our team as a Certified Nursing Assistant.

Please support the Elizabeth Seton Residence Spring Appeal with the included donation envelope. You can also donate online at elizabethseton.org. Your support makes a difference in the lives of all we have the privilege to serve.

“Thank you so much...I have never experienced such a special place as Elizabeth Seton Residence.” Gratefully, Elaine S.

“There are so many wonderful, dedicated, kind and caring people that made my mother’s days fulfilled with activity and company and joy!

Thank you so much!”

We are grateful to all who supported the Reverend John J. Connelly Education Fund. Established with a generous gift from Fr. Connelly’s estate, and named in his honor, this fund is used for continuing education seminars and advanced clinical certification that we could not otherwise fund.

We are thankful to Caitlin McNulty, our 2024 Boston Marathon Charity Runner in support of Elizabeth Seton Residence. We are also grateful to the Town of Wellesley for the charity bib.

Caitlin crossed the finish line with an official time of 4:31 and raised over $13,000 for ESR!

Caitlin is a cardiac nurse at BIDMC in Boston. Her mom, Maura, worked at Elizabeth Seton for the majority of her school-aged years.

“ESR has a special place in my heart having seen first-hand the passionate work they do. My senior year of college, I ran my first half marathon, and I have been hooked ever since!”
