INTRODUCTION
Alcohol and drug related deaths are on a rise in the UK, since lockdown drug misuse has increased. Substance abuse as a teenager is more damaging than as an adult as childhood habits/addictions are harder to break later in life. Substance abuse not only causes physical health problems such as strokes and heart disease, but it can also cause mental health issues as well as troubles with friends and families.
There are not many rehab facilities that offer the flexibility and friendliness that this project does whilst also protecting patients as many rehab centres in the UK are often described as isolating and scary, this is why this project will ensure that users have a sense of freedom and independence.
In the United Kingdom, the rate of drug poisoning deaths was 81.1% higher in 2021 than it was in 2012. Among males, there were 115.1 drug poisoning deaths registered per million in 2021, compared with 54.1 deaths per million among females. UK Government research also shows that alcohol misuse is now the biggest killer in England with 7,565 alcohol-specific deaths in 2019.
DESIGN STATEMENT
London is seeing the highest cases of drug & alcohol related deaths, especially in men; which is why it is important to prevent this by creating a rehab centre in London for teens and adult men. Teens will suffer the most later in life from addiction as their teenage years are their crucial developing years. I will be using therapeutic architecture design strategies to create a safe and healing environment for patients to recover, meet others in the same situation as them and create a better life for themselves.
The concept design will be a representation of the users old lives before recovery and their new, better life and future after recovering. I will be using contrast and spiralling up as my concept to show how recovery will change the users life’s massively.
JUSTIFICATION
Childhood habits & addictions are much harder to break later in life than starting them as an adult. Teens are also much more easily peer pressured by friends. This is why the target users will start as young as 15 year olds. The rate of drug poisoning deaths was 81.1% higher in 2021 than 2012 which shows a rapid increase in drug related deaths.
My proposed rehab centre will be a place where people from different backgrounds In the same situation will come together as a community and create themselves a better life by saving their own life by choosing recovery.
CLIENT
Action on Addiction Is a charity in the UK that works with people who are affected by drug and alcohol addiction. This charity works in areas of research, prevention, treatment and aftercare of addiction also offering professional education and support to families. Action on Addiction has stated it is a campaign to improve the understanding of addiction and end the judgement about it.

PROJECT BRIEF
This project aims to provide a Rehab centre which prioritises users well-being and sense of self worth whilst also supporting their recovery. The most significant aspect of this project is having specialised psychical activities in the centre which will aid in the recovery process. It is also critical to create a safe and welcoming environment which encourages users to return back to the centre.
This projects concept revolves around the journey users will take as soon as they arrive as the centre. Spiral in contrast is the concept name as the spiral represents the path that users follow from the minute they step into the centre, spiralling upwards into a better life after recovery. Users will be introduced to physical activities which will improve their well-being in recovery such as cooking courses, yoga, art workshops and even job opportunities in the ground floor restaurant which is open to locals. Activities like this have been shown to aid patients’ recovery as they learn new healthy coping mechanisms with others who are also wanting to recover which allows them not to feel alone.
The main objective is to provide a welcoming and friendly environment for those suffering from substance abuse. This project aims for the building to create a safe environment for users to be in and begin their recovery path with positive outcomes in not only their lives but their friends and families.

Covent Garden. Covent Garden is most well known for its shopping and entertainment in London's West End, Covent Garden is in the centre of the car-free Piazza, with fashion stores, craft stalls and the Royal Opera House. Street entertainers perform by St. Paul’s Church, and the London Transport Museum houses vintage vehicles.

City of Westminster is a city and borough in inner London and is the site of the UK’s house of Parliament. It occupies a large area of central Greater London.

Carriage Hall, Covent Garden, 29 Floral Street, London WC2E 9DP
Carriage Hall, (grade II listed), is one of a trio of developments that have transformed Floral Street into a premium retail and residential address. The site comprises three adjacent interconnected buildings of different eras, all set around the Grade II-listed building known as ‘The Carriage Hall’. The buildings structure consists of a framed structure of cast iron and timber with painted brick infill, slate roofs. It is built around a central courtyard and is 3 storeys.This building is part of the 56 conservation areas in Westminster. It is one of the first buildings to have elevations which consist of an exposed iron frame with lightweight infill panels.

Existing structure
The building lets in lots of natural light and sunlight due to its huge windows around the front of the building and the lightwell atrium which lights up the courtyard.
The sustainable materials in the building is brickwork, cast iron beam and columns.

spiral in contrast
The concept for this project was inspired by the success and recovery of this centre because when you recover, you act in the exact opposite way to spiralling downwards.
This project’s concept revolves around the spiral. The spiral represents the users journey throughout. The spiral begins on the bottom level through a spiral staircase and gradually grows larger as you ascend to the first and second floors, signifying users’ experiences as they spiral higher, towards a better existence. Starting their journey small but then become bigger and more opened up. The ‘spiral’ is apparent through the buildings structural interior walls, furniture and facade.
The Spiral of Life represents the physical, mental, and spiritual growth of a human existence as it winds its way through the years. As users become increasingly involved with each activity in the centre and progress up the building, the spiral grows larger on each story; representing their mental and physical growth since entering the building.

SUNPATH
Based on the diagram, the sites front façade is faxing the south-east which has direct natural lighting throughout the year. The rear side the building has the least amount of natural lighting
The building has 16 windows which are facing south-east which receive sunlight and skylight on the roof which allows plenty of sun and a natural daylight strategy into the central courtyard in the building.
The proposed glass extensions allows there be more sunlight and natural daylight coming in through the front façade.
I have used this diagram to determine the zoning of the functions within the building.

DESIGN STRATEGIES
the design strategies used are to promote the healing process for patients through the design of colour, furniture and finishings.
All the building functions are created as important components in the recovery process of patients.

The cafe is open to the public and users have the oppurtunity to work in the cafe as working after recovery is a constructive way to mantain sobriety and recovery.

By art therapy; mental health, relationships, and the ability to express oneself more freely can all be improved. The foundation of art therapy is built on the notion that through artistic expression, users may heal and feel better.
FF yoga studio
Yoga practice can help address users unique physical, emotional, or mental concerns. Yoga therapy can help with: mind-body connection. overall well-being

The art gallery will allow users to feel a sense of accomplishent as they will be praised for their artwork.
FF kitchen
Users can learn to cook in the kitchen in the hopes of discovering a new hobby and healthy coping mechanism.

MORITZBURG MUSEUM EXTENSION / NIETO SOBEJANO ARQUITECTOS
Contrast is represented through the ancient castle of Moritzburg in the city of Halle. The buildings' original structure is Gothic military architecture. During the building's renovations, the building has kept its original structure of its main architectural features: the surrounding wall, three of the four round towers at the corners and the central courtyard. The old original architectural feature contrast with its new modern roof which allows natural light to enter.
REHABILITATION CENTRE GROOT KLIMMENDAAL BY ARCHITECTENBUREAU KOEN VAN VELSEN
Rehabilitation Centre Groot Klimmendaal, is in a forest outside In the Netherlands. The three-storey building is clad in brown anodised aluminium and accommodates offices, a clinic, sports facilities, a pool, a restaurant and a theatre. Facilities are used by patients and the local community. A shallow wooden staircase connects all floors of the building while atria and lightwells visually connect spaces and allow natural light to enter. The design ensures that the residents of the building are not feeling enclosed as they are connected with nature whilst being indoors.

From creating this Design Report, I am able to see the long journey of designing ‘spiral in contrast’ rehab centre. I’ve always known that I wanted the concept name to relate to the healing and success of the center’s clients. I initially considered the ‘spiraling’ concept and contrast separately before deciding to integrate the two ideas. The major goal of this project was to design a rehab centre that is different from other rehab facilities. I wanted the centre to not look like a typical rehab facility so that clients wouldn’t feel pressured to enter therapy and instead could really enjoy the facility. I made it a priority to employ therapeutic design techniques and make an effort to produce an enjoyable and cheerful setting to aid in the healing process of users. I achieved this across the entire structure by utilising certain types of materials, furnishings, and finishings, as well as by constructing open, transparent spaces and the use of new windows. To maintain a sense of nature throughout the structure, green and brown are the primary hues used. I am happy with the exploration. I am pleased with the many investigations I conducted to make sure the concept was perceived visually in three dimensions throughout the structure. One of the most important aspects of how the concept is represented is by the curving partitions, which also serve other purposes like dividing up the various activity zones. The curving partition walls that separate the kitchen from the yoga studio—a loud area—contain acoustic insulation, so I took into account each zone of the structure.
Although the building is grade 2 listed, I think the facade design was a bold and courageous choice because it contrasts with the existing structure and also fits into my concept
