Dear Kingsmill Members!

We have officially entered into the Fall season, where we welcome cool temperatures and cooler activities. Now is a great time to get out and enjoy ourselves. Communing with friends, family and fellow Members within our gates is a great way to enjoy watching the leaves change and relish in the views of the James, all while having a ton of fun!

Our Events Calendar is full of great things to do this month! Whether your interest is Wine Tasting with the Williamsburg Winery, Trivia Night, Glow Golf, the Murder Mystery Dinner, pumpkin painting or so many others; we have multiple events for you!

I also wanted to mention our upcoming Comedy Night which promises to be a huge success!! We are all set for January 27, 2024, and due to an anticipated sell-out crowd, we are opening up tickets to our Members first later this month. More on that soon!

What could be more fun than our upcoming Events Schedule? Sharing it with your friends, of course! Don’t forget about your chance to join our Cannon Club by referring your friends and neighbors to Membership here at Kingsmill. There is still time to add yourself to the list of Cannon Club Members who are in the running for one year of complimentary dues!!

CLUB UPDATES

Hi Kingsmill Members,

We appreciate all the Members who participated in great September programming around the club, as we hosted our September Member Mixer, Trivia Nights, Summer Movie at The Pool, Crafts at The River Pool, Labor Day Food & Beverage Specials, our 2023 Kingsmill Club Championships, Men’s & Ladies Golf Member Guest Events, and The Men’s and Ladies Charity Tennis Classics! I'd like to thank our entire Kingsmill team for putting together a great calendar of events and executing them proudly. The River Pool is now officially closed for the season. Renovations at the Indoor Pool and Fitness are both going well, and we will continue to keep you posted on updates and progress made at the facilities.

Did you know that our Agronomy Team has planted over 5,200 flowers throughout the property this year?

October is a great time of year around The Club to celebrate as the fall season comes into focus. We are excited for our programming this month to include glow golf, a drive-in movie, an October Member Mixer, Jammin on James Concert with Good Shot Judy, many fall crafts, ghost walks, and a wine-tasting event with Williamsburg Winery Our and many Food & Beverage Specials! Be on the lookout for further communication and details! We hope you can relax and enjoy the programming at The Club with your friends and families.

AGRONOMY UPDATE

Fall has finally arrived! We are through the heat of the summer and our Bentgrass greens can finally breathe again. As we enter the fall, we will be performing our fall aerification and topdressing on our putting surfaces. This allows for oxygenation of the root zone which will aid in recovery from any stress in the summer months. Topdressing the greens with sand provides a growing medium for the Bentgrass to fill in, as well as promoting a smooth, firm putting surface once the greens have healed from aerification. We will be using solid tines rather than hollow tines. This allows for a faster aerification process, and the greens will heal quicker as well.

We just applied our Fall pre-emergent herbicide to the shortcut Bermudagrass on all 3 courses. We are also applying 3 applications of potassium. This will help protect the plant and strengthen the root system as it prepares to enter dormancy for the Winter. We are mixing potassium into our spray tanks as we apply our pre-emergent herbicide as well as our Spring Dead Spot applications. The fungus that causes Spring Dead Spot in our Bermudagrass is active during the fall months, but we won’t notice any damage until the Spring, hence the name. It is important to attack this fungus while it is active and limit its opportunity to proliferate and cause damage. We will be making 2 consecutive applications of fungicide to minimize any turf loss in Spring 2024.

Our team will be working hard to keep the leaves under control the next few months. As you well know, there are a lot of trees in Kingsmill, and it can be a rather large undertaking to keep all of the leaves under control. You will notice our blowers and turf vacuums will be in full use this fall.

Thank you for being a Member,

Thank you for your support in all that we do!

Repairing Ball Marks

A small amount of our time and attention can go a long way in helping maintain high-quality playing conditions on the courses we play. Repairing ball marks on the putting greens is an easy way to make a positive impact, but the importance of ball mark repair and the proper tools and technique are often misunderstood.

1. The proper technique for ball mark repair is easy and fast.

Insert the ball mark repair tool behind the ball mark and gently push the top of the tool toward the center. Continue working around the ball mark, pushing the surrounding turf toward the center of the indentation. Avoid using a lifting or twisting motion because this can damage turf roots. Once you have finished pushing turf in toward the center, gently tamp the area down with your putter to create a smooth, firm surface.

2. Unrepaired ball marks cause lasting problems

Failing to repair a ball mark may seem like a minor oversight, but there are lasting consequences. Unrepaired ball marks can take weeks to heal, during which time they can cause balls to bounce offline. The damage to the putting surface is also an entry point for weeds that can cause serious problems.

3. Certain putting greens are more vulnerable to ball marks than others.

Any putting green that typically receives high, lofted approach shots will be more susceptible to ball marks. The putting greens on par-3 holes are a perfect example. If you recognize that a putting green is prone to damage from ball marks, it is important to be mindful of repairing your own ball mark and a few unrepaired ones nearby.

4. Soft conditions mean more ball marks. When putting greens are wet or soft, ball marks will be more of an issue. This is just one of the reasons why superintendents work hard to promote firm playing conditions with aeration, topdressing, and other maintenance practices. If excessive thatch accumulates beneath the putting surface, ball marks and other turf issues will be more problematic.

5. Almost any pointed tool can be used to successfully repair a ball mark.

Many different tools have been created to repair ball marks, including single-pronged and fork-shaped tools. Almost any pointed tool, including a golf tee, can be used to effectively repair a ball mark. Using the proper technique is the key to success.

We look forward to seeing you out on the course!

RACQUET SPORTS UPDATE

Director of Racquet Sports | Davy Hairston

Happy Fall, from Kingsmill Racquet Sports!

September was a busy and blustery month with a storm that passed through at the perfect time between our Ladies Charity Tennis Classic and our Men’s Charity Tournament. Both events served wonderful causes and offered players a great chance to show off their skills. Our facility has weathered the recent storm and the extreme summer heat very well, with our courts playing and looking world-class from the new furniture, windscreens, backboard, LED lights, and pickleball nets.

Looking ahead to October, we welcome Joshua McFadden as a new addition to our Racquet Sports Staff. As a PTRcertified instructor, he will assist with our renewed afternoon Junior programming and various duties around the facility. New Adult Programs include Wednesday Theme of the Week (Stroke of the Day, but more creative) and Fit-Tennis / Cardio classes, now listed on The Club at Kingsmill Home Page.

October events will include a Fall Junior Tennis Festival on October 6 and the highly hyped KTA Davis Cup at the end of the month. With fall temperatures, it’s a great time to get your game on!
