WELCOME GENERAL MANAGER MESSAGE Welcome to November. I hope everybody enjoyed our start to Fall. We had a few summer-like days, but also enjoyed many pleasant golf days and the course shaped up nicely as we moved into our golf season. We enjoyed hosting several club events in October. Congratulations to this year’s Ladies Club Champion Marilyn Eickenhorst and to our Men’s Club Champion Olin Olson and all the flight winners. Congratulations to all flight winners in our annual member-guest and to the Shootout Champions Drew Beaver and Weldon Martin. GOLF TURF TALK

Brad Seiler, GCSAA Class A

November…. The back side of our Fall season. This month usually starts off with the great weather October provided but tends to noticeably cool down. We can expect to see our low temperatures dip into the 40’s at times with an average low for the month in the 50’s. For some members this is perfect and for others, not so much. In the Agronomy world, it is one step closer to our warm season turf getting sleepy and growth slowing down dramatically. We will continue executing the programs in place, making seasonal adjustments along the way, and will continue to focus on sustainable plant health, course details, and start planning our Winter projects. Also, be on the lookout for an announcement as we have our Landscape Supervisor joining our team this month. This is very exciting as it is one step closer to realizing our vision of having a dedicated clubhouse and grounds crew, including a manager. On behalf of myself and our Agronomy team, we thank you for your patience and continued support, and hope everyone has a Happy Holiday Season!

WELLNESS

CARDIO QUICK TIP! Cardio training should be a part of any fitness program. It increases VO2max (maximum rate of oxygen consumption attainable during physical exertion), increases blood flow to muscles, reduces cardiovascular disease, improves body composition, and increases resting metabolism. Now, what if I told you that shorter-duration, higher-intensity interval training can accomplish these benefits and encourage a fatburning environment more effectively than steady-state cardio? POINT 1 One of the primary barriers to exercise is lack of time, so why engage in a 45-60-minute cardio session when a 20-30minute interval training routine can rev up your metabolic engine? Furthermore, you'll free up some time for strength training. POINT 2 In the past, we've been told, "If you want to lose fat, you gotta do lots and lots of cardio." Sadly, the promoters of the "fatburning zone" and "steady-state cardio" ideas have sabotaged far too many fat-burning efforts. Let us first examine a quick study on interval training: Australian researchers, Trapp & Boutcher, put WOMEN through a 15-week study where one group performed intervals (20 minutes of alternating sprints and recovery), and the other group performed 40 minutes of slow cardio. The interval group lost 2.5kg (5.5lbs) of fat in 15 weeks on average (with one subject losing 7.7kg (16.9lbs) of fat), while the slow cardio group lost only 0.4kg (.88lbs) of fat over 15 weeks on average. Total post-caloric impact (or afterburn) of the activity is the key, not whether fat or glucose is burned as energy during exercise. Calories burned during exercise, though a consideration, is a distant second to the overall metabolic impact following exercise. Fat-loss expert, Alywn Cosgrove, defines it as EPOC, Excess Post Oxygen Consumption. As intensity increases, so does the need for more oxygen in recovery, and with it, an increase in fat burning to fuel that recovery. Translation: elevated fat-burning for hours following exercise.
