October is always a special month as we anticipate some slightly cooler temperatures and welcoming our Members that have been traveling during the summer months. October also features our popular monthly events like Billy's Complimentary Golf Clinic the second Thursday of the month, Birthday Bash, Bingo, and Turkey Buffet. A new addition for October is Trivia Night! Get your thinking cap on and grab your friends for some extra help. Check the calendar for dates and times and make your reservations early. Looking forward to November we are anxious to host our annual Women's Member Guest. The committee has been hard at work planning another amazing event. Everyone always has such a great time you really need to join us! We have some exciting things in the works for Fall with a full social and golf calendar. We also just launched a great new Member Referral reward program. Call Taunya to hear how you can share a club credit with your friends when they join the Club. Now get out and play, Andrea

GOLF MESSAGE FROM THE PRO SHOP Billy Van Arsdale

The Florida State Golf Association completed the course re-rating in September. I don’t really know for sure if the course only had the original rating or an update was performed at some point. The new course ratings will go into effect Wednesday October 4th. The slope rating and course ratings have dropped since the “last” rating due to a couple of reasons. We have lost a lot of trees over the years and with the modern method of marking “penalty areas” rather than using out of bounds it does make the scoring easier. The “Silver Tees” are causing a challenge with Florida State Golf Association rating team because of not being on our normal scorecard but we should have it resolved soon.

GREAT GOLF SHOTS Mike O’Brien scored a hole in one at the Par 3 fifth hole September 9th using a hybrid. Mike’s ace was witnessed by Jan Marsh, Tom Driscoll, and Mark Morache. Congratulations Mike!

Please use the grandhavengc@grandhavengc.com address for any league sign-ups, tee time requests or cancellations, or major tournament sign ups. AFTER YOU POST YOUR SCORE PLEASE REMEMBER TO TURN IN YOUR SIGNED AND DATED SCORECARD AFTER EACH ROUND. THE HANDICAP COMMITTEE IS AUDITING SCORECARDS.

DID YOU KNOW There are 7 Rules of Handicapping divided into 4 basic categories? I.Fundamentals of Handicapping Rule 1: Purpose and Authorization: Obtaining a Handicap Index

II.Scores for Handicap Purposes Rule 2: Scores Acceptable for Handicap Purposes Rule 3: Adjustment of Hole Scores Rule 4: Submitting a Score

III.Handicap Calculations and Updating Handicap Index Rule 5: Handicap Index Calculation Rule 6: Course Handicap and Playing Handicap Calculation

IV.Administration of a Handicap Rule 7: Committee Actions Currently the Grand Haven Golf Club Handicap Committee members are: Tom Smith., Frank Large, Shaun Porter, Carl Zimmermann, and Peg Pettingel. One of the responsibilities of the Committee is to “Educate and Communicate the Rules of Handicapping to Members”. Anyone familiar with publications such as the “Rules of Golf” and others from USGA and R&A knows that there is a lot more than meets the eye. So it is with Handicapping; and the Committee plans to “highlight” many of the rules and procedures in future “Did You Know” articles in our Club’s Newsletters. This will help ensure that golf at Grand Haven (and elsewhere) is not only fun, but fair.

FROM THE RESTAURANT MANAGER Marco Martelli

I would just like to introduce Myself. My name is Marco, I am joining the team to assist Jeri Harper in the daily running of the Food and Beverage program here at Grand Haven.

I have worked in many capacities throughout the hospitality industry, ranging from resorts, to nightclubs then later onto country clubs. I come to you after spending six years at Sugarmill in New Smyrna Beach where I was the Banquet & Beverage Manager.

Just a little background on myself. I was born in Philadelphia but my family moved to northern Delaware when I was still very young. I attended Delcastle Vocational High where I obtained a Culinary Arts certificate. I then matriculated at the University of Delaware where I earned a B.A. in Consumer Economics.

I look forward to serving all of you and using my knowledge to enhance your experience at the Club. .I am hoping to expand our entertainment and member events in the coming season. Please do not hesitate to approach me with any ideas or concerns. Or if you have any food or beverage requests you feel we should offer.

FROM OUR GOLF LEAGUES WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION “Welcome back to school (golf), students (league members)!” exclaimed Principal (President) Margaret Subers at the opening day luncheon on September 19. In keeping with the theme of the day—Back to school!/BACK TO GOLF!—new classmates (members) were introduced, a yearly budget was proposed and approved, and committee reports were given by their corresponding chairs. The league remains strong at 67 members, but new members are most welcome at any time. Each student (member) was treated to a “goodie bag” found on the seat of each cart, containing golf items and chocolate. A further “school” item was a brown paper dessert bag, containing tasty beignets. Amy Lamb and B.J. Mott disclosed that the first Seagals event of the season would be hosted at Grand Haven in October. Heidi Fitzgerald gave an update on this year’s Member/Guest Tournament to be held on November 9, 10, and 11. The theme for the event is “Red, White, and Blue!” The meeting concluded with the revelation of this year’s Stableford team colors—-solids-stripes-florals! Interesting footnote —Did anyone catch sight of a group of WGA girls all dressed in pink, playing in a BARBIE format event on Friday, September 22??!!
