Abstract & Expressive In a few short weeks we will begin our rehearsal process for John Logan’s vibrant and visceral play Red. The play is set in New York City in the 1950’s and follows painter Mark Rothko as he begins to work on his career defining commission for The Four Season's Restaurant inside The Seagram’s Building. Rothko will be paid a high price for his work, but he struggles with the purpose of art in a consumerist setting. Is his work then decoration? An over-mantel piece? A status symbol? In an art world flooded with new pop art such as Andy Warhol’s soup cans and Robert Rouchenberg’s comic books, how does his work withstand the test of a new generation? Does his prestigious commission mark the end of his relevance and the beginning of his commercial success? This play brings up a central question for me as an artist and particularly a theatre artist. Why do we make art? Is it to please the public? To challenge them? Well, John Logan posits the following in the words of his lead character Mark Rothko: “'Pretty.' 'Beautiful.' 'Nice.' 'Fine.' That's our life now! Everything's 'fine.' We put on the funny nose and glasses and slip on the banana peel and the TV makes everything happy and everyone's laughing all the time, it's all so goddamn funny, it's our constitutional right to be amused all the time, isn't it? We're a smirking nation, living under the tyranny of 'fine.' How are you? Fine.. How was your day? Fine. How are you feeling? Fine. How did you like the painting? Fine. What some dinner? Fine... Well, let me tell you, everything is not fine!! HOW ARE YOU?!... HOW WAS YOUR DAY?!... HOW ARE YOU FEELING? Conflicted. Nuanced. Troubled. Diseased. Doomed. I am not fine. We are not fine. We are anything but fine... Look at these pictures. Look at them! You see the dark rectangle, like a doorway, an aperture, yes but it’s also a gaping mouth letting out a silent howl of something feral and foul and primal and REAL. Not nice. Not fine. Real. A moan of rapture. Something divine or damned. Something immortal, not comic books or soup cans, something beyond me and beyond now. And whatever it is, it’s not pretty and it’s not fine...I AM HERE TO STOP YOUR HEART, YOU UNDERSTAND THAT?!... I AM HERE TO MAKE YOU THINK!... I AM NOT HERE TO MAKE PRETTY PICTURES!” That is what I strive to do with our work at The Studio, I want to challenge the audience, make you think. And this play will do just that, I hope. I can’t wait to start working on it and to bring you this smart, funny, profound and heartbreaking play.

From the creation of Rhythm of the Dance in 1998 (initially the show was set up for a 3 week tour of the United States) it has toured consistently internationally and is achieving greater critical acclaim year after year. This wonderful show continues to evolve thanks to the constant striving for perfection by its Director/Producer, choreographer and composer to keep the show fresh and interesting so that audiences who attend performances regularly will always nd some new and exciting elements within the programme. With a wonderful, gifted young cast of dancers, musicians and 3 Irish tenors, featuring live performances from the entire troupe, this is a show that has won critical acclaim across 4 continents of the world in 36 countries to over 7 million fans. And now after 17 Years of showcasing the very best in Irish dance to the world, the show has undergone a process of renewal, re-invigerating the choreography and music to create an even more spectacular performance. Producer Kieran Cavanagh is very excited about the updated format of the show, he hopes that Rhythm of the Dance will be a breathe of fresh air into Irish dance with this traditionally rooted and authentic production.
The History of Irish Step Dance The history of Irish dance started when the Celts arrived in Ireland from central Europe over two thousand years ago. Bringing with them their individual styles of dances and music. There are vague references to the early history of Irish dancing but evidence shows that its rst participants were the Druids. They danced in religious rituals honoring their pagan gods. Around 400 A.D., after the conversion to Christianity, the new priests adopted the pagan style of art in creating their beautiful manuscripts, and the peasants kept the pagan style of music and dancing. The circle dances of today began after the Anglo-Norman conquest in the twelfth century. The
Carol was a popular Norman dance where the leader sang and a circle of dancers replied with the same song. Three Irish dances are often referenced from the sixteenth century: the Irish Hey, the Rinnce Fada and the Trenchmore. One of the rst mentions to dance was in a letter written to Queen Elizabeth I in 1569 in which the dancers were described as being very beautiful and magni cently dressed rst class dancers. During the mid-sixteenth century, dancers performed in the great halls of newly built castles, and some of the dances were brought to the court of Queen Elizabeth. The Trenchmore was an adaptation of an old Irish peasant dance, and the Hey was a predecessor of the present day reel. Irish dancing was accompanied by the music of the bagpipes and the harp. The dancing master appeared in Ireland in the eighteenth century. He would wander from village to village to teach dance to peasants. Each dancing master had his own district and never trespassed into another master’s domain. When they met at fairs, they challenged each other to dancing competitions that ended only when one group was left standing. Each master had his own style, so several versions of the same dance would be found in different areas of Ireland. Over the centuries, Irish dances were modi ed into the jigs, reels, hornpipes, sets, half sets and polkas performed today. Solo dancing, or step dancing, rst appeared at the end of the eighteenth century. There are dancing competitions in all four Irish provinces and winners qualify for the All Ireland Championships. The international competitions are held in Dublin at Easter and the dancers from other countries compete for the world title. The success of Riverdance , Lord of the Dance and Rhythm of the dance has placed Irish Dance on the international stage. Dancing schools in Ireland and all over the world today are filled with youngsters imitating the dancing styles.

Bill Doherty Bill Doherty is a pianist, conductor, composer and singer. As a singer, Mr. Doherty has performed 14 leading roles in opera productions throughout the United States and Europe including the Mohawk Valley Opera (NY) and the Tri-Cities Opera (NY), and was mentored by the legendary soprano Licia Albanese (Metropolitan Opera, La Scala). As a pianist, composer and conductor, Mr. Doherty conducted members of the Central Florida Lyric Opera and the St. Timothy Choir in a special Mass of Thanksgiving at the Vatican for Pope Benedict XVI and in concerts in an around Rome, Italy in 2012. His work has been recognized and commended by both Florida Governor Charlie Crist and former United States President George W. Bush. Mr. Doherty is the Director of Music at St. Timothy Catholic Church in the Villages, FL. Among his many other honors and awards, Mr. Doherty is the recipient of the New York State Council on the Arts Humanities Award and his signature has been immortalized on the Muro di Alassio in Alassio, Italy.
Todd Wilander Praised by Opera News for his “clear and sweet lyrical tone” and “brave, vocally assured portrayals” (New York Times), Todd Wilander is one of America’s most sought-after young leading tenors. Since winning The Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, he has appeared with the company as Arturwo Lucia Di Lammermoor (James Levine), Almaviva Il Barbiere Di Siviglia, Beppe I Pagliacci and Harry La Fanciulla Del West, plus roles in Wozzeck, Two Boys, The Nose (HD Movie), Hamlet, Gambler, Macbeth and From The House Of The Dead. He appeared with New York City Opera as Charles Clayton in Stephen Schwartz’s Séance On A Wet Afternoon, Uberto La Donna Del Lago and Harry La Fanciulla Del WEST. For New York Opera Society he sang Rodolfo La Bohème and Nemorino L’elisir D’amore Originally from Arcadia, California, he completed a Bachelor of Arts in Music and Business at California State University, Los Angeles, received a Masters of Music in opera performance and
literature from Northwestern University (title-roles of Serse, Candide, Albert Herring, Nero Poppea), and Artist Diploma at the University of Missouri, Kansas City Conservatory of Music.
Marcel D'Entremont Originally from Merigomish, Nova Scotia, Marcel d'Entremont is currently a Schulich Scholar at McGill University, where he is completing an artist diploma. He is also obtained a Masters of Music at the University of Toronto where he graduated from the studio of Dr. Wendy Nielsen, on full scholarship. A recipient of the Portia White award from the Nova Scotia Talent Trust, Marcel is also a four-time recipient of the Halifax Kiwanis Music Festival rose bowl as well as the New Glasgow Music Festival rose bowl, received an honourable mention from the Ottawa Choral Society’s New Discoveries Competition, and received second place in the Hal Leonard International Vocal Competition. In the summer of 2014, he represented Nova Scotia at the National Music Festival of Canada where he placed first in the vocal division, and also won the grand award for overall best performer.
Kaitlyn McMonigle
Kaitlyn Alexandra McMonigle, mezzo-soprano, who has been a student of Carol Vaness for the past three years completed her Master of Music in Vocal Performance at Indiana University with a Graduate Assistantship and received her Bachelor of Music at Florida State University. This past summer she performed the role of Sister Helen Prejean at the Miami Music Festival where she worked with Jake Heggie. She recently performed in the Angel Quartet of Heggie’s new opera It’s A Wonderful Life which he work-shopped at Indian University. A native of San Diego, California, Kaitlyn was raised in Ocala, Florida where she regularly appeared in musical productions at the Ocala Civic Theatre. Since 2008, Kaitlyn has been performing with Central Florida Lyric Opera in a variety of concerts, dinner shows, and operas/operettas with roles that have included Despina in Cosi Fan Tutte, Rosina in The Barber of Seville, Kate Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, and Mabel in The Pirates of Penzance.

The Moscow Festival Ballet was founded in 1989 when legendary principal dancer of the Bolshoi Ballet Sergei Radchenko sought to realize his vision of a company which would bring together the highest classical elements of the great Bolshoi and Kirov Ballet companies in an independent new company within the framework of Russian classic ballet. Since its inception, the Moscow Festival Ballet has completed two tours of Europe, with extraordinary receptions in Italy, France, Spain, Germany and the Netherlands. Two tours of the United Kingdom, including capacity audiences at London's famed Coliseum, have resulted in re-engagements during the 1995-96, 1996-97, 1997-98, 1998-99 and 1999-2000 seasons.
The company has also performed with great success in Turkey at the Istanbul Festival and in Greece at the Athens Festival, and recently completed a two-month tour of Japan, Korea, Singapore and Hong Kong. Under the direction of Sergei Radchenko, the Moscow Festival Ballet continues to expand its repertoire. In addition to commissioning new works from within Russia and abroad, the company specializes in Twentieth Century full-length ballets such as Cinderella, Romeo and Juliet, Legend of Love, Stone Flower and The Golden Age. Mr. Radchenko has researched the original choreography and stage productions of several of Marius Petipa's classic ballets, including new productions in the year 2000 of Don Quixote and Paquita, and a recreation of Jules Perrot's and Jean Coralli's Giselle.

Today, Richard and his wife, Rebecca and son, Nicholas, continue to rescue dogs from shelters and homes and train them to become part of their professional troupe. In her internationally acclaimed play, The Mountaintop, playwright Katori Hall fantasizes what may have transpired in the overnight hours between the legendary civil rights leader and a seemingly inconsequential hotel maid. Winner of the prestigious Olivier Award for Best New Play, The Mountaintop is rife with humor and political jabs, while giving us a glimpse at the human side of Martin Luther King Jr. Hours after his famed final speech, punctuated by the immortal line, "I've been to the mountaintop," the celebrated Reverend reveals his hopes, regrets, and fears, creating a masterful bridge between mortality and immortality. Named “the company of the future” by The Joyce Theater Foundation, Dance Magazine’s 25 to Watch in 2013 and Best of Culture by the Los Angeles Times, the young company is already internationally recognized for their high quality of work. Since its inception in 1960, the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba has been instrumental in developing and introducing Cuban and Latin American music to the international classical music community, in addition to covering a vast symphonic and chamber repertoire ranging from baroque to contemporary music. International tours have taken the orchestra to The United States of America, Russia, Poland, Yugoslavia, Mexico, Nicaragua, Spain, Peru and Argentina.

March 20th to April 22nd | $35 Famed abstract expressionist painter Mark Rothko asks his recently hired young assistant, Ken, the loaded question, "What do you see?" John Logan's visceral two-hander, Red, features artist Mark Rothko at the height of his career. Set in 1950s lower Manhattan, this biographical play illustrates Rothko struggle as he lands the biggest commission in the history of modern art, a series of murals for New York's famed Four Seasons Restaurant. When Ken begins to challenge Rothko, he faces the agonizing possibility that his crowning achievement could also become his undoing. This six time Tony Award winning play takes a compelling look at the ever-changing relationship between an artist and his creations.

John Lombardi* (Rothko) is delighted to be part of RED at The Studio Theatre Tierra del Sol. Tampa Bay area performances include Gaston in An Empty Plate... and Herr Shultz in Cabaret (freeFall Theatre), both Theatre Tampa Bay Award nominations for outstanding featured actor. Beside many other freeFall productions, John has performed at Asolo Rep, American Stage, Florida Rep and The Jaeb Theatre. In addition to many regional and off-Broadway credits, John is a member of the New Jersey Repertory Company. He received his BA in theatre from Roger Williams University and his MA in theatre from Monclair State University. John is a proud member of Actors' Equity. Colton Butcher (Ken) is excited to be making his first
appearance on The Studio Theatre Tierra del Sol stage. Colton has recently been seen in Saint Joan (Jeremy Seghers Presents). He had the fortune of understudying in The Great Gatsby and Love's Labour's Lost (Orlando Shakespeare Theatre). He also had the pleasure of working with this show's director, Trevin Cooper, in Lend Me a Tenor (Athen's Theatre). Colton earned his BFA in Acting at The University of Central Florida in 2016. He had a successful run at UCF with roles in Writes of Spring, The Foreigner, Trevor, and The Understudy. He's been training over the last few years with the Society of American Fight Directors and has earned certifications in multiple weapon styles. Rich Najuch
The Studio Theatre's™ Costume Designer Who is Rich? Most recently Rich has been the Costume Designer for The Studio Theatre's production of Company and their upcoming production of Red. Recently Rich created the costume design and built the clothes for the Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Bermuda’s production of The Drowsy Chaperone. After 15 years, this past September Rich married his husband, Joel Froomkin and they relocated to the Orlando area. Rich and Joel are the creators of Different Stages Theater Company and spent ten years producing MainStage shows as well as concerts at their theater in Indiana. Prior to their Indiana adventure Rich and Joel worked together in New York City on productions for The Bermuda International Festival of the Arts, The New York Fringe Festival, and The Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Rich attended The Catholic University of America's Benjamin T. Rome School of Music and the American Musical Dramatic Academy in New York City and, for two weeks before he decided he had been to enough schools, Columbia University in New York City. Rich has been blessed with having been able to see hundreds of the best professional productions in New York, Los Angeles, and London and has a been part of more productions than his limited ability to count allows him to keep track of! When not busy sewing, building sets, or painting a show, he spends time rehabbing and bringing old buildings back to life, and is often covered in some sort of construction debris.
What is your role at The Studio Theatre™ ? I have just recently costume designed The Studio Theatre's production of Company, and will be the Costume Designer for their next production, Red, as well. For Company, since the show is set in a contemporary time period, being the Costume Designer was kind of like being a personal shopper for the characters based on the vision discussed with the Director. I gather information on all of the performers (sizes, photos) as well as the characters they are playing (social status, where they live, age, etc.) and then spend a few weeks out shopping for options. We then had a big “Fitting” day where everyone tried on outfits that I had put together for their characters for the Director and I, and we decided on the looks that best suited the characters. Of course, it’s not that simple though! Once the main fitting is done there are always changes and add ons. The whole process takes about six weeks for a show like that and starts about the same time as rehearsal does. For the upcoming production of Red the setting is in the late 1950’s. Therefore, the clothes will need to be reflective of that time period in addition to the characters, who are based on real people for Red with actual photos available of the real people to use as reference. Now that Company is wrapped up for me, I’m getting ready to start on that production and have already met with the Director, Trevin Cooper. I plan on probably creating some of the clothes from scratch with vintage patterns for Red and working in some pieces that can be made to look time period appropriate. What I have to do as Costume Designer certainly varies depending on time period of the play that I am working on.

How did you find out about The Studio Theatre and what made you want to work here? I found out about The Studio Theatre from Danielle Paccione, the Production Manager. Danielle and I met about eight years ago and worked together on several of our shows at my theatre. She is so wonderful and professional and ready to go – I knew that anything that she was working on was something that I would want to be a part of and was thrilled when she called and asked me to take a swing at Company. My husband and I just moved to Orlando last summer, so I am very grateful for the chance to work on a production in our new area.

What’s your favorite part of the job?
I’d say my favorite part of the job is when I can help an actor find the exterior skin of their character. When I can create a wardrobe for them that they can LIVE in as the character I feel like I’ve done my best to help them in their creative process.

McCall's Tavern AFTER THE SHOW!
After a sold-out performance of A night with Janis Joplin on The Sharon stage on January 9th, the entire cast and crew hopped down The Spanish Springs Town Square and continued to rock it out at McCall’s Tavern. The unsuspecting audience in The Villages got such a delightful surprise as the Janis Joplin talent took to the stage and sang in the more intimate setting with no planning involved. The show got rave reviews at The Sharon, and as for the after party‌ well, there were no complaints there!
