SINGULARITY

PROJECT INFORMATION
Academic Term: Fall 23
Program: Music Hall
Site: White Oak Bayou
Designed with: Gustavo Assing
Programs Used: Revit, Rhino, V-ray, Illustrator, Photoshop
The SINGULARITY Music Hall at White Oak Bayou is a facility of simple, contemporary elegance that means to amplify- but not distract- from its surrounding cityscape. Located just off of the beautiful University of Houston- Downtown campus, with a stunning panoramic view of Houston’s downtown skyline and direct access to the picturesque White Oak Bayou Greenway, SINGULARITY promises a modern medium-sized venue for musical performances accommodating audiences of up to 350 people. The concept of SINGULARITY stems from a perspective where sciences can be artistic, and arts can be scientific. In mathematical and astrophysical terms, a Singularity is a geometric point where mass is compressed
to an infinite density with zero volume and zero surface area. It is a point at which the force of gravity becomes so powerful that it can significantly warp time. To the human senses, then, Music can be interpreted as a singularity. Though it has no physical manifestation, it has an irresistible force of attraction to the Human psyche and an infinite weight of spirit, passion, and emotion.
SEQUENCE DIAGRAM
This comparative concept of “Music as Singularity” guides the architecture of the SINGULARITY Music Hall. The Performance Hall- the physical embodiment of Music- becomes a massive yet visually simple gesture with a continuous radial surface that suggests the infinity of musical creativity.

PROGRAMMATIC DIAGRAM
Around the Performance Hall exists a contemporary building that seems almost as if it has been absorbed into the ‘Singularity of Music’ by its immense, pseudogravitational attraction. The hope is that this new music performance venue will become a small landmark in the City of Houston, celebrating the community’s diversity, as well as a place for musicians and music lovers of all musical genres to teach clinics and record their form of musical expression.

BEFORE AND AFTER...
Due to this being an adaptive reuse project, I aimed to preserve most of the abandoned flour mill building as much as possible while still being able to provide various openings within the core of the building and be able to connect it to the many elements that surround it such as the neighboring supermarket, the various vertical vegetable gardens, and to the Port of Houston.

PUBLIC VS. PRIVATE
In addition to the dinning hall that is open to the public there are also much more private spaces within the co-op that also offers educational sessions on cooking classes, sustainable farming practices, urban gardening, and food sourcing. You’ll get hands-on experience in growing your own ingredients, understanding the farm-to-table process, and appreciating the importance of sustainability in food production. Furthermore, the co-op also intergrates a outdoor bar/garden on the rooftop for potential events amongst the event center and office spaces that occupy the building.

VERTICAL VEGETABLE GARDENS
With the educational circuit that navigates you through the site, it allows the public to experience a unique cultivating food process known as vertical farming which can grow various types of food such as strawberries, grapes, cucumbers, lettuce, peppers, spinach, and many more. To make the most use of the space, I included a spiral staircase that allows the public to access it from the ground floor or the existing bridge, navigate

to the various floors, and get a closer look at the vertical garden that encircles the walkable area. Eventually, the food cultivated within the vertical garden will also be used to make the food the public will be consuming within the main dining hall as the site was designed in a way to recycle its food sources on site.

Iteration 02 Final Iteration In Context Elevation Section

PERCOLATING ELEMENT
To effectively convey the concept of Houston as a percolating city, I integrated a variety of design elements that capture the dynamic, lively energy of the city. The free-flowing roof serves to create varied heights within the auditorium, while the three-story museum is designed with an open vertical experience, extending from the ground floor to the third floor, culminating in a peak that connects to
the percolating roof above. Additionally, a series of offset circulation spaces within the central lobby further enhance the fluidity and connectivity of the space.

INTERNAL TO EXTERNAL LOUVER SYSTEM
To enhance the spatial experience of the percolating elements within the lobby, an installation of internal louvers has been incorporated into the triple-height space. This arrangement allows the external louvers to create the illusion of funneling into the interior, guiding movement from the east building elevation to the west. As
visitors navigate the main circulation space, they are immersed in the dynamic, percolating effect, fostering a sense of fluidity and connection throughout the space.
