Welcome from Ministry of Energy & Minerals
On behalf of the Ministry of Energy & Minerals, I extend my warmest greeting to you. I am elated to welcome you to Oman Sustainability Week 2023.
Today, the world stands on a critical stage of adopting a balanced energy transition that supports the needs of economic development as well as ensures a sustainable future for the present and future generations. In line with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals and the Oman Vision 2040 plan, the Sultanate of Oman is undergoing a transformation to build an effective and resilient ecosystem that supports the national objectives.
Oman Sustainability Week (OSW) returns to re-iterate the Sultanate’s commitment to climate change. The event aims to accelerate the adoption of clean technologies and engage the national development stakeholders to present Oman as a model for sustainable development. OSW serves as an ideal national platform to foster partnerships, facilitate meaningful dialogue, and showcase innovative strategies for driving solutions in the energy, power, water, waste, and environment sectors.
With strong participation from the private and public sectors, OSW focuses on driving the energy transformation and highlights the nation’s efforts to develop local talent and draw global expertise in finding solutions for the climate crisis. The weeklong series of events begins with the much-acclaimed OSW Awards that assess excellence in sustainability initiatives and corporate responsibility by organisations operating in Oman. The three-day exhibition is estimated to bring together over 80 local, regional, and international companies showcasing their latest innovations to over 7000 attendees.
The International Sustainability Resources and Technology Conference (ISRTC) organized by Oman Environmental Services Holding Company- be’ah and programmed by The Economist Impact unites over 50 international and local expert speakers and 450 delegates to address the global sustainability challenges. Introducing this year, the Oman Sustainability Week (OSW) Talks is designed to educate and inspire delegates on best practices, innovations, and technologies presented by leading energy, environmental, and academic institutions. Returning at OSW for the second year, the Gaia Summit organised by SPE (Society of Petroleum Engineers) focuses on highly interactive sessions, engaging panel discussions, technical presentations, and keynote speeches over two days of active knowledge sharing.
The OSW Site Visits activity offers the attendees real-time insights into live sites and projects that are on the forefront of building a sustainable environment in Oman. In its endeavor to incorporate sustainable values in all aspects of life, the Sultanate has introduced various initiatives to encourage young Omani talent to participate in the national development. The Shell NXplorers educational program is designed in
OMANSUSTAINABILITYWEEK.COM 8 OMAN SUSTAINABILITY WEEK
collaboration with MoE and Engineering Village, to raise awareness about the Sultanate’s energy transition among school children and to inspire them to think innovatively about future energies. Another such offering is the Shell Nawafidh program to provide Omani youth with the opportunity to explore the future energy market through a structured and integrated technical and life skill curriculum in partnership with German University of Technology in Oman (GUTech) and Outward-Bound Oman (OBO). The educational programs hosted alongside OSW demonstrate the Sultanate’s efforts to prepare the next generation of sustainability leaders.
Let’s pledge to continue to collaborate for achieving the national objectives of a clean and green economy. I thank you for joining us in the energy transformation drive for a better and sustainable future!

OMAN SUSTAINABILITY WEEK
From ambition to action: leadership, commitment and collaboration
March 13th and 14th, 2023 - Muscat, Oman
PROGRAMMED BY ORGANISED BY
Destruction from climate change will only worsen if society fails to act. Yet a green transformation can deliver not only a cleaner planet, but economic growth and healthier people too. The Middle East region is working to accelerate this transition. It requires leaders in business and government to design action plans, collaborate and meet commitments. After COP27, Oman Sustainability Week will host practical discussions on what an
OMANSUSTAINABILITYWEEK.COM 26 OMAN SUSTAINABILITY WEEK
equitable transition to a sustainable society looks like. And it will bring together the scientific and technological communities to help put the plans in action.
Join Economist Impact for “Oman Sustainability Week: From ambition to action: leadership, commitment and collaboration”, sponsored by be’ah. The event will connect local and global stakeholders across academia, industry and the public sector, fostering constructive debate and enhancing cross-sector collaboration. Covering the energy transition, sustainable finance, and sustainable production and consumption, along with development and collaboration, the event’s solution-focused discussion tracks will build a roadmap for achieving climate-resilient and sustainable growth for a better future.
The key themes for the Oman Sustainability Week will include:
• How will renewable energy progress in the Middle East? Will the region seize diversification opportunities?
• What business growth will arise from the region’s pursuit of net zero?
• Hear technological case studies of sustainable development from the region
• The role of sustainable finance: how is the region’s financial sector performing and what more needs to be done?
• How will production and consumption become more sustainable and circular in the region?
• The road to COP28: what areas of collaboration and commitment need to strengthen on the journey to net-zero?

OMANSUSTAINABILITYWEEK.COM 58 OMAN SUSTAINABILITY WEEK
Join us for the third SPE Gaia Summit, where for two days, oil and gas decisions makers and future makers will “think like activists and act like engineers”. We have designed a highly interactive program around key Gaia themes, Energy System Transformation—People & Technology; Measuring What Matters; Natural Capital & Regeneration; and Listening & Engaging.
It is widely accepted that humanity is not doing enough fast enough to reduce the pressure on the planet’s carrying capacity—seven of the nine planetary boundaries are in breach according to the Stockholm Resilience Center. We are not thriving inside planetary boundaries and yet we could be and we could whilst enjoying the benefits of oil and gas—that’s our Gaia premise. We can have our hydrocarbon cake and eat it too but only if we make the extraordinary advances needed to restore balance to the planet.
Our program is designed for operational and strategic decision-making roles—those on the front line of operationalizing sustainability and challenged each day by difficult to reconcile tensions, barriers, challenges, lack of conditions to experiment, fail, try again, innovate, learn and succeed. You’ll bring your sustainability challenges into the room and go home better equipped to progress them—more confident, with a community and with new technical and decision-making knowledge.
