WHO WE ARE From the 1850s

Till today

THE SKLAR FAMILY … were distillers of vodka and slivovitz plum brandy in the 1850’s (and possibly earlier) in the town of Widze, then part of Imperial Russia, where the patriarch, known as ‘Rebbe Itzik’, runs a ‘Patwal’ (distillery/cellar). Their community and the local Cossacks ‘didn’t get along’ and so Louis Sklar & family left Russia (what is now Louis & Max Sklar

Belarus), and moved to Turkey for a short while, but finding no work there, moved on to London in the 1890’s. Years later their son Max opens a wine and spirit store in London’s East End until it is destroyed in the London Blitz during the 2nd World War.

Undeterred, he then moves from the daily bombing of the London Blitz to Leicester, where he carries on his Wine & Spirit Business in Evington Lane, Leicester until his death in 1966.

AFTER WWII

Dale Sklar, 5th generation in the business, who earns his first wage

Max’s son, Stanley Sklar, after returning from India with the RAF and

bottling sherry during the Christmas rush when he is just 4 years

demob in 1946 followed the advice of his Father and set up as a

old!- eventually joins the company and moves up to Sales &

fledgling importer ‘Sklar of London’. In the late 1960’s Capital Wine

Marketing Director. He travels to Mexico for the first time in 1969.

Agencies merged with a 17th century Wine shipper ‘Joseph Travers’

owned by S & W Berisford PLC of British Sugar fame. Over the years, Stanley Sklar imports and distributes world famous brands such as Stolichnaya Vodka, Ouzo 12, Wyborowa Wodka, Bols Liqueurs, Pimm’s etc. Stanley is probably the first to ship José Cuervo Tequila into the UK in the 1960’s. His long standing love for tequila continues for around 30 years as he closely works with Alfredo Gonzalez of

‘Eucario Gonzalez’ distillery in Tequila town.

In 1984, with very little money, Dale sets up his own company, Wine & Spirit International. He primarily focuses on selling French and Italian wines as a broker, but is soon appointed as UK importer for Wray & Nephew overproof Jamaica rums. The Sklars always been known for dealing in ‘unusual spirits’, Dale is

approached by a UK trader in 1988 to source El Tesoro de Don Felipe and Tapatio Tequilas. After a meeting in Arandas with the Camarena family, Dale becomes importer of both tequilas.

CIRCA 1962

WSI takes an additional direction with the creation of its own

the family secures the exclusive distribution rights for all wines and

products. In 2011, Tanya, one of Dale’s four daughters joins the

spirits from the Soviet Union into the UK and the exclusive supply

family firm to become the 6th generation Sklar in the Liquor

rights of all Scotch Whisky and London Gin to the USSR.

FAIRY MARGARITA 10ml Trenet Absinthe 25ml Bambarria Blanco Tequila 20ml Freshly squeezed lime juice 20ml Triple Sec Add all the ingredients to a cocktail shaker with plenty of cubed ice.

Shake well and strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish the rim lightly with fine rock salt and a slice of fresh lime.

CONQUERING LION BLENDED SCOTCH WHISKY Producing Conquering Lion Scotch Whisky involves selecting and blending various malt and grain whiskies from Scottish distilleries, in the Scottish Highlands, Lowlands, Speyside, and Islay. The distilled spirits are aged for a minimum of three years in bourbon and sherry wood oak casks, and over the years they develop flavours and colour from the wood.

Master blenders meticulously blend the matured whiskies to create a consistent flavour profile, harmonising the diverse characteristics of the regions, such as the Highlands' depth, the Lowlands' delicate lightness, Speyside's complexity, and Islay's peatiness. The blended whisky is allowed to rest and marry together in wood, enhancing the final blend.

Whereas ‘Rum Agricole’ (mainly from the French Caribbean) is made from sugarcane juice & so they tend to be sweeter; our rums use both sugar cane juice and molasses, and so they are more balanced and complex.

Los Valientes oak barrel solera blended rums are a selection of small batch premium Mexican rums, from the state of Veracruz, and named after ‘The Valiant Ones’…heroic fighters in the Mexican Revolution.

Los Valientes is a unique blend of pot-distilled rum from Caribbean-coast sugar cane, and column-distilled molasses, which is then rested in 100-year-old huge

oak barrels, prolonging the ageing process but reducing the tendency to over oak the final distillate.

Available in 10 year aged, 15 years and 20 years aged.

Mezcal Lajita is a classic earthy mezcal produced and bottled by the renowned Licores Veracruz. It is made from 100% Agave augustifolia more commonly known as ‘Espadín’.

Historically speaking, mezcal is the ancestor and origin of Tequila, yet the traditional cooking process is very different. Mezcal is cooked by roasting, hence the smoky flavours (whereas Tequila is steam-cooked).

RON MOCAMBO AGED RUM MEXICAN RUM Created by Licores Veracruz, the range of Ron Mocambo premium-aged rums are complex and refined with a smooth mature taste.

Aged in European white oak barrels and hand selected by the master distiller, the range includes a 20 year-old expression, decorated with agave fibres and individually numbered.

Distilled from ripe plums

The plums are pressed to release the juice and fermented over 6 weeks in natural artesian spring water with no added sugars, and using only the natural yeasts on the plums and in the air. They are then distilled in a small copper still in the small village of Prádlo Czech Republic. No added sugar, no colouring, no preservatives - just an entirely natural product.

SKLARTINI 1 Fresh plum (stoned, peeled and chopped) 50ml Sklar Slivovitz 15ml Martini Extra Dry 10ml Gomme In a cocktail shaker muddle the plum with the gomme & half a mint leaf.
