Dear Epiphany School Community,
Welcome to Epiphany School’s second Annual Impact Report! In the following pages, we highlight the incredible support of our extended community—families, alumni, grandparents, faculty, staff, and friends—and all we were able to achieve thanks to your generosity.
2022-2023 was a banner fundraising year at Epiphany School, as we raised nearly $1.1 million with participation in our Annual Fund from 100% of our board of trustees, 97% current families, and 89% of our faculty and staff. Our community’s steadfast support has been instrumental in advancing our mission and ensuring our school’s continued success.
Your gifts have touched every aspect of our school community, from academics and technology to campus maintenance and professional development. Through your contributions, we have empowered our teachers with valuable leadership and mentorship opportunities, enhancing our school’s culture of innovation and collaboration. We’ve expanded access to our school for even more families to receive financial assistance and
opening additional spots for qualified students. In 2022, we welcomed 48 new families into the Epiphany School community! Additionally, we enhanced our Extended Day programming, created a dedicated position to provide instructional coaching for faculty, and launched a next-generation STEM curriculum built to inspire student innovation and creativity.
As we look ahead, your continued support will play a pivotal role in the ongoing success of Epiphany School and our growing role as the leader in Seattle elementary education. Know that your commitment to our shared mission makes a lasting impact. Thank you!
With sincere appreciation,
Jenn Elkin Head of School
Welcome to Epiphany School’s Annual Impact Report for the 2022-2023 school year. We thank our donors for their generosity and are honored to list them in this year’s publication.
We have made every effort to ensure the accuracy of this report. Donors recognized in the Annual Giving section made gifts between July 1, 2022, and June 30, 2023, in support of Epiphany School’s endowment, financial aid program, and current operating needs. Throughout the report, graphed data values are rounded, and “Anonymous” name listings may recognize multiple people.
Tuition alone does not cover the full cost of an Epiphany School education. Annual giving ensures an exceptional education is possible for every student accepted into our program. If you have questions about your donor recognition or would like more information about giving opportunities, please contact Lauren Smith, Director of Development, at lsmith@epiphanyschool.org or (206) 971-3018.

By Kacy Lebby, Outdoor Education Specialist
One day in outdoor ed class, a first grader took a big breath and said, “Ah, fresh air!” It was such a small comment but left me feeling so grateful to work at a school that prioritizes children and their connection to self and community while in nature. It is unique to have outdoor education within an elementary school, but so necessary. We know that a connection to nature can have a profound impact on a child’s well-being. Regular exposure to the outdoors can help young children learn necessary skills such as developing community, improving their emotional regulation, and increasing problem solving skills, all of which can be used to strengthen and build upon concepts within academic learning. We also know that we need stewards of our earth more than ever—but we need to teach them how.
As we continue to build our Outdoor Education Program, we will need additional supplies to ensure that students can learn safely and comfortably outside. We have already purchased extra raincoats for those who forget theirs at home, read-aloud books about the changing seasons, and materials to build a shed to store materials outside for class. The Annual Fund is a key source of funding for new materials, books, and supplies for teachers, and one way that families can support the learning and development of Epiphany School students.
By Celia Russo, Lower Elementary Division Head
The impact of the Annual Fund can be seen in classrooms every day! Walk around campus and you’ll see students sorting and organizing a colorful array of math materials to build foundational numeracy skills. In another classroom you’ll spy students huddled around laptops, collaborating on a writing project, and giving each other feedback using tech tools.
Thanks to the Annual Fund and our community’s generosity, teachers can engage with students in responsive and inviting ways as they continue to grow their instructional toolbox through robust professional learning experiences. New curricula, such as school-wide phonics and word study, provide continuity and growth across the grades as students gain essential skills. New programs, such as integrated music, drama, and movement, give all students a chance to learn about their talents and shine in unique ways.
All these remarkable parts of students’ everyday experience at Epiphany School are supported by the Annual Fund! Participating in the Annual Fund means that our students flourish, our teachers thrive, and academic excellence grows.

Grandmother of current students
As a grandparent, what inspires your continued support of Epiphany School? have been privileged to be a grandparent for 28 years. My first and oldest granddaughter benefited from an excellent educational environment and that, along with a lot of hard work and support, has helped her find success as a soon-to-be graduate of Harvard Medical School. have seen the impact a quality education can have in a child’s life, and I want to do all I can to promote that same good fortune for my youngest grandchildren here at Epiphany School.
What feels good about giving to Epiphany School? am more than happy to give; am truly honored to help support Epiphany School. My family benefits every day from the carefully planned curriculum, individualized learning plans for students, the richness of the educational experience, the exceptional teachers and staff/ administration, and the fostering of life-long learners. These all help create a well-rounded individual, no matter their age. Isn’t this what the world needs?
Your 2022-2023 annual giving supported a myriad of important initiatives at the school, including enhancing our English Language Arts program, expanding our Extended Day Program, and advancing our Professional Learning Community and mentorship programs for teachers. Is there any initiative that you are especially passionate about supporting? All these programs are wonderful and are central to setting Epiphany School apart from its peer schools. am especially intrigued by the mentorship program for teachers and the advancement of the Professional Learning Community. Our teachers are the backbone of our school, without them, Epiphany School would not be what it is today. When our teachers feel fulfilled, respected, revered, and supported, our children and grandchildren will, too.
Why is it important to continue your support? A one-time donation feels good, but a continued donation feels great. hope I can continue my support of Epiphany School long after my grandchildren have graduated. Our students are the world we envision, and we need to help make that world become a reality.
Parents of current students
You have contributed to Epiphany School for seven years running. What inspires your continued support of Epiphany School? The dedication and passion of the Epiphany faculty and staff to provide an outstanding educational experience for our girls is one reason why we donate to Epiphany. The happiness and excitement we observe in our children and their friends each day makes us feel proud to be part of the Epiphany family. We give what we can to ensure Epiphany continues to excel and be the very best!
What feels good about giving to Epiphany School? How do you know your gift makes a difference? Is there any initiative that you are especially passionate about supporting? We know our donations make a positive difference when we see an innovative academic curriculum, continued improvements to programs and projects in the classroom, and opportunities for teacher enrichment. The addition of the Outdoor Education Program was a positive and welcome change this year. Being exposed to the outdoors and learning to appreciate and protect nature makes supporting programs like this an easy decision for us. We also recognize and highly value the importance of supporting the financial aid program because it broadens our community.
What would you want to tell a first or second-time donor who is considering renewing their commitment to Epiphany School? Why is it important to continue supporting Epiphany School year after year? We hope all Epiphany parents will help to keep our school growing. Not only are students at our school the future teachers of our world, but they are also certainly the most precious part of all our lives right now. We are grateful to be able to financially support this amazing educational program each year.
Thanks to our Annual Giving Committee
Members at each grade level, who helped to keep the enthusiasm and momentum going:
Epiphany School’s Annual Fund enables the school to make meaningful and historic investments in its campus, staffing, professional development opportunities, and academic program. In recent years, the Annual Fund directly impacted the school’s ability to provide teachers with leadership and mentorship opportunities, allowed us to upgrade technology across campus, ensured we can hire and retain talented staff in critical roles, increased the financial aid we offer families, and advanced our Math and English Language Arts curriculum and instructional practices.
This important philanthropic effort funds the necessary short and long-term investments that ensure every student is well-supported and every teacher can deliver on the power and promise of an Epiphany School education. In the 2022-23 school year, our powerful seven-week campaign exceeded our $475,000 goal and raised record-breaking numbers!
We appreciate and thank Auction 2023 Chair, Ashleigh Walls, and her entire planning committee, for their leadership in producing a truly memorable event last March at Block41 in Belltown! Auction 2023: Epiphany School in Bloom was a wonderful evening filled with laughs, dancing, fun, and spirited fundraising.
With the generosity of our amazing community, we were able to raise over $415,000 to enrich Epiphany School programming—with $233,475 of that total supporting our financial aid program through our Raise the Paddle program! We are incredibly grateful for our Auction committee and everyone who procured, volunteered, attended our event, donated, and raised their paddles!
A series of Leadership Donor Gatherings honored participants in each giving level, as our community came together to celebrate the school’s many successes and the generosity of our donors.
Thank you for your support of Epiphany School! However you choose to give, know that any amount will help the school immeasurably. There are many ways to make a gift to the school, including:
Make a one-time or recurring donation using our online donation platform that allows for secure transactions. You also have the opportunity to contribute by mail with a personal, foundation, or business check.
A pledge is a promise to donate a certain amount of money over a designated period of time. You can choose to fulfill your pledge with a one-time donation or a series of payments before the donation deadline. Pledging your intended donation allows you to commit your support to the Annual Fund while paying on a timeline that works best for you.
These can be a strategic way to maximize tax benefits and often minimize capital gains taxes. You can easily transfer stock electronically to our school’s brokerage account. The value of your gift and tax deduction is the mean price of the stock on the date of transfer.
Did you know many companies offer a matching gift program to encourage philanthropy among their employees? You may be able to double, or even triple, the impact of your gift! Matching gifts are counted toward your annual giving in our donor recognition categories.

The Epiphany School Endowment was created in 1983 to ensure the financial stability of the school. It has grown to more than $14 million today. The corpus is kept in place; the earnings from the endowment provide monies for special projects, financial aid, faculty development, arts enrichment, technology, buildings and grounds, and learning skills.
The establishment of the Endowment Fund Campaign in 1983 was spearheaded by Mr. Jack Goodfellow and a committee of past presidents of the Epiphany School Board of Trustees. Below is a little bit of information on a few of our named Endowments.
Established in 1992, the purpose of this fund is to provide funding to our art program to allow students to be creative and express their artistic curiosities.
Established in 1998, the purpose of this fund is to cover ongoing improvements and maintenance of Augustine Hall. It is named after Epiphany School’s seventh Head of School, Jean Augustine.
Established in 1984 by Matt and Cameron Griffin, in honor of their mother, Dorothy P. Griffin, to honor her upon retirement from 15 years of teaching Learning Skills at Epiphany School. The purpose of this fund is to provide financial aid to Epiphany School students requiring supplemental Learning Skills support and tutoring to learn and thrive in school and to reach their full potential.
Established in 1983 by the Board of Trustees to support teacher professional development.
Established in 1990. The purpose of this fund is to provide tuition support to families who may not otherwise be able to afford an Epiphany School education.
Established in 1990, the purpose of this fund is to support and maintain the historic buildings and grounds of the Epiphany School campus.
Established in 2008 by the Board of Trustees, in honor of Epiphany School’s ninth Head of School, George O. Edwards. Inspired by George’s commitment to the ongoing education of his faculty and staff, this fund supports faculty/staff development and enrichment.
Established in 2019 by Jenny and Richard Cummins. The purpose of this fund is to provide tuition assistance to under-represented students. It is the donor’s preference that the award supports students of African American, African, Hispanic, or Latino origin.

At its heart, Epiphany School’s culture of philanthropy is built on the spirit of volunteerism. There are so many ways to get involved in our school community, from volunteering in our classrooms and library to sharing your personal stories, family and cultural traditions, or professional expertise with our students.
In the past year alone, families have read stories in classrooms, chaperoned field trips, helped produce our annual Carnival event, organized our donation drives, handed out hot cocoa at our First Friday Fun tables, and so much more. Additionally, grandparents and special friends have attended grade-level performances, enjoyed lunch with their student, and attended Grandparents and Special Friends Day.

The Epiphany Parent Council (EPC) is made up of all of the parents/guardians who have a student currently enrolled at Epiphany School. Each year, the school and the EPC executive committee ask parent/guardian volunteers to help run and support the many activities and celebrations that foster our vibrant and inclusive community.
“Volunteering at Epiphany School means I can show up for my daughter and support the school at the same time. By seeing me volunteer it shows her that I am invested in her education and the Epiphany community.”

Starling D. Hunter III, Ph.D.
Dr. Starling D. Hunter III shared a very special story: attended Epiphany School from kindergarten to sixth grade. The years were 1968-1975. The late Mr. Spock was headmaster then. My younger brother also attended Epiphany for part of that time. In the summer of 1972— between third and fourth grade for me—our father died of cancer. Some years later I learned from my now-deceased
mother that she was financially unable to send us back to the school after our father’s passing. However, someone at or associated with the school made an anonymous donation that allowed us to continue, at least until such time as my mother remarried, perhaps even longer.
My brother and I have never been told the name of the anonymous donor(s) and we don’t really need to know. All
