EPIPHANY SCHOOL Annual Impact Report 2021-2022

Dear Epiphany School Community,

As I reflect on the 2021-2022 school year, I am filled with immense pride and gratitude for all that we have accomplished together. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, we were able to come together as a community and achieve some truly remarkable milestones.

It was one of our biggest fundraising years to date, with an incredible $1.2 million raised. We are thrilled to report that we also had our highest-ever participation in Annual Fund, with 99% of families contributing to our school’s success. This impressive level of support is a testament to our community’s generosity and commitment to our shared mission of supporting and challenging all Epiphany School students to become confident, curious, and courageous learners. Through the generosity of an alumni family and long-term supporter, we were also able to establish a new endowment fund for financial aid, ensuring that an exceptional Epiphany School education is accessible to more students.

Beyond fundraising, the 2021-22 school year was notable for the exhilaration and relief we all felt as we could finally gather in person once again to celebrate our community. Watching our students perform, welcoming alumni back to campus, and hosting our first in-person GATHER event in years were truly joyous occasions.

All of these achievements would not have been possible without the dedication and hard work of our entire community. Our faculty, staff, students, families, and supporters all came together to make this year a success, and I am incredibly grateful for each and every one of you.

Thank you for your unwavering support of Epiphany School.

Warmly,

Welcome to Epiphany School’s 2021-22 Impact Report, highlighting donors, events, alumni, and strategic initiatives. Our 2022-23 Impact Report will be published in early 2024.

About the Report

We thank our donors for their generosity and are honored to list them in the 2021-2022 Annual Impact Report. Epiphany School is supported by families who understand that their giving ensures that an Epiphany School education is possible for every student. Tuition alone does not cover the full cost of an Epiphany School education.

We have made every effort to ensure the accuracy of this report. Donors recognized in the Annual Giving section made gifts between July 1, 2021, and June 30, 2022, in support of Epiphany School’s endowment, financial aid, and current operating needs. Throughout the report, anonymous name listings may recognize multiple people, and graphed data values are rounded.

If you have questions about your donor recognition or would like more information about giving opportunities, please contact Lauren Smith, Director of Development, at lsmith@epiphanyschool.org or (206) 971-3018.

Ron Koo & Lisa Olmos de Koo: 5 Years

What inspires you to keep giving to Epiphany School?

From those nervous first days at pre-k, through the darkest days of Covid, to today, we have entrusted our children to Epiphany School, where they spend half of their waking hours. We are impressed by how diligently the school strives to improve and nimbly adapt to ever-changing circumstances. Our children have deep

pride in their school. No matter how the morning starts, they emerge from Madrona Hall at 3:15 pm energized and with smiles from ear to ear. They are loved, they feel safe, they belong.

What feels good about giving to Epiphany School?

Our participation in the school’s Annual Fund is a way to express our appreciation for the faculty and staff’s dedication to the school’s mission of innovative teaching in a caring and inclusive environment. We also recognize how impactful donations can be to make an Epiphany School education more accessible to our broader community.

Your 2021-2022 gifts supported a myriad of important initiatives at the school, including 1:1 devices for all students, increasing the financial aid we offer families, hiring talented staff into critical new roles, and implementing elements of the strategic plan. Is there any initiative that you are especially passionate about supporting?

Faculty professional development, recruitment, and retention are especially important to us. A hallmark of Epiphany School is the welcoming learning experience that is created and nurtured by our talented teachers and staff.

“Epiphany has been a gift to our family since our oldest son started in pre-k. We have watched both of our sons thrive and grow with each passing year, knowing that they get to be their own special person while learning how to be part of a community. We get even more than we give out of our Epiphany School experience, so supporting the Annual Fund is our way to add a little more balance to the equation.”

2021-2022 CONTRIBUTORS

Marilyn & Bob Henry: 25 Years

You have contributed to Epiphany School for 25 years running. What inspires you to keep giving to Epiphany School after all these years?

Marilyn’s frequent substitute teaching [after 31 years on staff] and Bob’s service on the Board of Trustees have afforded us the opportunity to see the quality of people who work at and who lead Epiphany School. We both agree that teachers have always been and continue to be key to children’s experience, and Epiphany teachers are inspired and inspiring. Our contributions over the years are a salute to the teaching corps.

Can you recall why you gave to Epiphany School the first time you donated?

We believe that Epiphany School should be available to families regardless of their financial circumstances. If a student is qualified, they should have the opportunity to enjoy and grow from an Epiphany experience. Therefore, we have always earmarked our contributions for the endowments that fund financial aid awards. We believe that our contributions are part of a groundswell of community-wide belief in the importance of this mission, and we hope to see an increase in the percentage of students granted support.

Your 2021-2022 gifts supported a myriad of important initiatives at the school. What areas are you most passionate about supporting?

We believe expanding the school’s commitment to supporting teachers’ professional growth goes hand in hand with the mission of tailoring instruction to meet the needs of each individual student. Talented teachers need continuous exposure to current techniques, ideas, and programs to facilitate this important—and we believe rare—promise to parents. Teachers are the powerhouse of this institution.

What would you want to tell a donor who is considering renewing their commitment to Epiphany School? Why is it important to continue supporting Epiphany School year after year?

Just as children’s academic and emotional growth takes time, so does the implementation of innovative programs. Ongoing support is what allows them to be nurtured and expand. Imagine having a vision to create a beautiful garden. Even a novice knows that planting a seed is just the beginning, and success is dependent upon the work of many hands.

**** 20+ years

The 2021-22 school year marked the return of many events that were previously canceled or postponed during the pandemic, including our annual Leadership Donor Gathering. To honor those donors from previous years, in May 2022 we invited all Leadership Donors from 2019 to 2022 to our first gathering in several years. Graciously hosted at the home of Nikki and Zach Putnam, this event was a warm and wonderful way to connect with important members of our school’s community. With an attendance of over 100 people including current and former parents, members of our Board of Trustees, and staff, we celebrated our school’s successes over the years and shared in the joy of being able to gather together once again.

Annual Fund

Epiphany School’s Annual Fund is an important philanthropic effort that enables the school to make the necessary short and long-term investments that ensure every student is well-supported and every teacher can deliver on the power and promise of an Epiphany School education. This powerful six-week campaign exceeded our $450,000 goal and enables Epiphany School to make meaningful investments in its campus, staffing, professional development opportunities, and academic program. In recent years, the Annual Fund directly impacted the school’s ability to introduce key curricular and programmatic improvements, including Math in Focus, Responsive Classroom (our schoolwide social-emotional learning framework), and teachers’ Professional Learning Community (PLC) work.

Class of 2015 Reunion

Our annual Alumni Reunion is an honored tradition and a wonderful way for us to celebrate these students before they graduate high school and head off into the world. On June 4, 2022, we gathered with Epiphany School alumni from the class of 2015 to share memories, reflect on their “hopes and dreams” from elementary school, and learn about their plans for the future. Congratulations to these brilliant students as they embark on many new adventures.
