PRESIDENT’S LETTER
Dear Friends,
This year, we humbly and joyfully celebrate Hope Harbor’s 40th anniversary—a testament to the power of hope, faith, and community. For four decades, we have served as a haven for at-risk, runaway or homeless youth, providing a safe place and a pathway to a brighter future.
Rooted in Christ’s love and the calling to serve, our mission has always been to care for “the least of these” (Matthew 25:40), offering shelter, healing, and guidance to those in need.
Through the unwavering support of our dedicated team, generous donors, and compassionate community partners, we have seen countless lives transformed. Every teen who has walked through our doors is a reminder of the power of love, hope, and the shared responsibility to uplift those around us.
As we reflect on 40 years of impact, we renew our commitment to building a legacy of compassion, courage, and collaboration. Together, with God’s guidance and the collective power of community, we will continue to serve those in need, now and for generations to come.
Thank you for standing with us in this journey of hope, healing, and reunification. May the blessings you’ve shared with others return to you in abundance.
With Gratitude, Bryan Crain President and CEO
JOEL’S STORY
Growing up, Joel felt he was never good enough. His parents lost their jobs, home, and car, plunging them into a years-long cycle of moving between transitional programs. When Joel and his family became homeless, they slept on the ground behind a library. “I didn’t want to go to school because I smelled bad, looked funny, and didn’t feel like was smart enough,” he said. The lack of stability caused Joel to retreat into himself. He developed low self-esteem and stopped talking to people.
While receiving resources from a local church, Joel’s family learned about the life-changing programs offered at Hope Harbor and Orange County Rescue Mission. Soon, Joel was walking through the doors of the Rip Tide Boys Home, where he says, “I had a good feeling moving in. The home was beautiful, and everything I needed was provided for me.”
At Hope Harbor, Joel found the stability and support he desperately needed. He
gained confidence, learned proper eating and exercise habits, and discovered tools to excel in school. With this newfound belief in his potential, Joel dared to be a first-generation college student at Vanguard University. “It felt amazing to read the letter that I was accepted,” he says. Looking ahead, Joel aspires to become a therapist or social worker, driven by a desire to give back. “I want to pay it forward by helping others realize their full potential and help them receive the same support I did.”
“It was a relief not to worry about when my next meal would be or where I would sleep.”
