When God Says No

Matthew 7:11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father who is in heaven give good things to them that ask him? (ASV)

Growing up Southern Baptist in a small rural community, I will never forget when the Deacon began his address to the church. Clearing his throat, he stepped to the podium adjusting his bifocals and tugging on his brown suit. He began calmly, “Hmm…Well, it has be sung in our church that Jesus will never say no, but I have reason to say the opposite.”

You could hear summer crickets and surprised sighs make melody from the back of the small choir stand. I sank deeper into the wooden bench where my family were glued and watched the glares of many eyes narrow their view up front.

“Alright now, “an older lady responded as she peered at the choir director who recently led the song.

Deacon argued passionately, “Not everything we ask for is good for us nor in order with the plans of God, and God being a wise God, a faithful and all-knowing God would not say yes when no is best. He may allow some things, but no is indeed an answer God gives.”

“Amen.” “Amen.” “Amen.” The sound of many voices hurled strong agreement toward the Deacon. Soon people began to testify that God’s no was the best answer in their situation.

“Well, if that be the case indeed, how do we know when God says no?” the choir director inquired. Everyone grew silent.

“I know,” I whispered. “When God says no, then it just doesn’t work, and if you do it anyway, you will soon regret it.”

The congregation smiled and nodded.

“Listen to the wisdom of a child,” the Pastor agreed and called me into his arms. “How do you know this young lady,” he asked.

I smiled with confidence and said, “Oh, it is because my parents say no all the time and usually, they are right. Besides, God loves us more than our parents.”
