Loyalty is a quality we deeply admire in others and strive to embody ourselves. Loyalty has always been my number one trait I strive to give to the people I love and things in life I am passionate about. Loyalty is also what I look at when developing long term relationships because loyalty carries so many other characteristics that show a person’s true nature and intentions. It’s the foundation of trust, a pillar of meaningful relationships, and a marker of character. When loyalty is genuine, it transcends convenience or self-interest; it’s an unwavering commitment that withstands both the good times and the challenges. Here are 10 characteristics that make someone truly loyal, and how these characteristics connect with being an enthusiast—where passion naturally fuels loyalty.
TRUSTWORTHINESS
At the core of loyalty lies trustworthiness. Loyal people are dependable; they consistently do what they say they will. This reliability creates a strong foundation in relationships, as people know they can count on them in any situation.
COMMITMENT
Loyalty requires commitment, whether to a person, a cause, or a belief. This goes beyond words, showing through actions over time. Loyal individuals don’t give up easily; they work to maintain and nurture their bonds even when the going gets tough.
SUPPORTIVENESS
Being genuinely supportive is a crucial aspect of loyalty. Loyal individuals stand by others, offering encouragement, empathy, and a helping hand whenever needed. Their support isn't conditional or dependent on circumstances, making it a reliable source of comfort.
HONESTY
While loyalty and honesty may seem separate, they’re closely linked. A loyal person doesn’t shy away from difficult conversations or telling hard truths. Their honesty is driven by care and respect, aiming to nurture and strengthen the relationship rather than undermine it.
PATIENCE
Loyalty requires patience, as relationships and commitments often face trials. Whether it’s a friend going through a tough time or a team struggling with a project, a loyal person stays invested, knowing that true loyalty is enduring.
SELFLESSNESS
A loyal person often puts others’ needs ahead of their own, not out of a lack of self-respect but because they value the relationship. They’re willing to make sacrifices and compromise, always considering what’s best for others.
EMPATHY
Understanding and sharing in another’s feelings is a sign of true loyalty. Loyal people seek to understand and empathize, creating bonds that go beyond surface-level interactions. This empathy strengthens connections and fosters deeper loyalty.
CONSISTENCY
Genuine loyalty isn’t sporadic; it’s consistent. A loyal person shows up consistently, maintaining the same level of dedication and commitment. This reliability is key to establishing lasting trust and deep bonds.
HUMILITY
Humility allows a loyal person to put aside ego, focusing on the relationship rather than their own pride or image. They admit mistakes, forgive others, and prioritize harmony, knowing that relationships matter more than being right.
ENTHUSIASM
Enthusiastic people are often the most loyal, as their passion drives a sense of devotion. When someone is genuinely enthusiastic about something or someone, they naturally want to see it succeed, making them a powerful ally.
PASSIONATE ENTHUSIASM AS THE FUEL OF LOYALTY
Loyalty is deeply linked to enthusiasm, especially when it comes to our passions. Whether it’s a love for a hobby, support for a friend, or dedication to a cause, enthusiasm drives us to stay committed, to keep showing up, and to work towards the success of the people and projects we believe in. Enthusiasts naturally embody loyalty—they’re committed, passionate, and resilient, embodying all these characteristics.
So, to be loyal is to be an enthusiast of those we love and the things we care about. This passion binds us, grounding our loyalty in a desire not only to witness success but to contribute to it. In this way, genuine loyalty is ultimately about being an enthusiast for life, committed to nurturing what we love and dedicating ourselves fully to the people and causes that matter most. Enthusiast Magazine is not just a publication, it's a lifestyle. Loyalty Is a lifestyle.

AN INTERVIEW WITH DREW NEWMAN OF J.C. NEWMAN CIGARS
INTERVIEW BY LINCOLN SALAZAR
In the world of premium cigars, few names carry the weight and heritage of J.C. Newman. As the fourth generation to lead this storied family business, Drew Newman is on a mission to not only honor the legacy of his ancestors but also to innovate and elevate the brand for future generations. In this exclusive interview, Drew shares insights into Tampa’s rich history as the cigar capital of the world, the challenges of maintaining a cigar factory in the U.S., and the exciting new projects keeping J.C. Newman at the forefront of the industry. Join us as we explore how this iconic brand continues to evolve while staying true to its roots.
Lincoln Salazar (LS): Drew, J.C. Newman has been a cornerstone of the American cigar industry for over a century. With such a rich family legacy, it’s impressive to see how the company continues to evolve while staying true to its roots. Let’s begin by talking about the history of Tampa as the cigar capital of the world and how your family has kept that tradition alive.
Drew Newman (DN): Sure. A hundred years ago, Tampa was the cigar capital of the world. More than 150 factories made over 500 million cigars annually by hand here. Last year, 400 million handmade cigars were consumed in the U.S., but 100 years ago, Tampa alone produced 500 million—more than Cuba or anywhere else. Cigar-making defined Tampa’s culture. Before cigars, Tampa didn’t exist as it does today. Most families had someone who worked in the cigar industry.
The factory we’re in, El Reloj, was built in 1910 as the world’s largest cigar factory. But after its peak in the '30s and '40s, the industry began declining in the '60s. By the '80s, most factories in Tampa had closed. Realizing El Reloj was the last operating factory, my family and I knew we had to open our doors to the public, offering tours, classes, and events to preserve Tampa’s cigar history. As part of our 125th anniversary celebration, we restored the factory, created a cigar museum, and started teaching visitors how to roll cigars. Last year, we hosted 22 weddings and continue to roll 60,000 cigars a day, combining handmade and machine-made production. El Reloj is now an ambassador for Tampa’s cigar legacy.
LS: Those 60,000 cigars—handmade or machinemade?
DN: It’s a combination. Most are rolled on antique hand-operated machines my greatgrandfather bought 90 years ago.
LS: As a fourth-generation cigar maker, what did you want to implement, and what’s your plan for the next few years?
DN: When you walk into El Reloj, it’s like stepping back in time. Our methods are the same as my grandfather’s and great-grandfather’s. Authenticity is key for us. During the factory’s restoration, we worked with historic preservation offices to ensure accuracy. We were inspired by wineries and breweries and wanted to make El Reloj a cigar tourism destination. Despite launching during the pandemic, the response has been incredible—10,000 visitors last year, and we’ve already increased that by 50% this year. What’s surprising is that half of our visitors are regular cigar smokers, and the other half have never touched a cigar.
We’re introducing non-smokers to the art and craft of cigars. Even if they don’t smoke, they leave with an appreciation for the craftsmanship. It’s been a wonderful, unexpected outcome.
LS: I’ve toured cigar factories in Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Nicaragua, but this tour is unique because of Tampa’s history. The vintage cigars you have—some over 100 years old—are truly remarkable.
DN: Thank you, Lincoln. I appreciate that.
LS: Congratulations on everything you've done. Drew, tell me about your first cigar. You grew up in a cigar family, right?
DN: My first cigar was a Cuesta Rey No. 47, which we no longer make. It was rolled by the Fuente family. I still have a few boxes saved. It's a privilege to continue this tradition, especially sitting here with portraits of my great-grandfather, grandfather, father, and uncle around us.
LS: As a fourth-generation cigar maker, did you always know you wanted to join the family business?
DN: It was clear from a young age that I could pursue any interest, but cigars were always around. Conversations at family gatherings often turned to cigars. I worked part-time in high school, creating and managing our website in the mid-'90s. After college, I became a lawyer and worked in D.C. and New York. But even with these experiences, I stayed connected to the family business, and they’ve helped me contribute to its growth.
LS: What has been one of your biggest challenges since joining the family business?
DN: When I joined full-time in 2017, many people didn’t know J.C. Newman. From 1934 to 1997, we operated under the name M & N after a merger, and we didn’t tell our story until we rebranded in 1998. Our 128-year family history, with archives and cigar records, went largely untold. The biggest challenge has been educating people, both new and seasoned cigar smokers, about who we are and our history.
LS: How often do you smoke cigars, and how involved are you in the blending process? I know you have some new products like the America.
DN: The FDA says most consumers enjoy one or two cigars a month. I smoke more often but mostly for quality control— checking construction, combustion, and taste. I rarely get to sit down and fully enjoy a cigar during work. When I do smoke outside the factory, it’s for technical reasons.
LS: Do you pair cigars with anything, like spirits or coffee?
DN: Here in the factory, I just focus on the cigar’s flavor. Outside, I enjoy cigars with coffee or wine but avoid cocktails, as they can alter the cigar’s taste. I prefer savoring the pure flavors of the cigar.
LS: What new blends are coming out, and how involved are you in their development?
DN: The American is one of our standout products. This Lonsdale size, the American Diplomat, is one I rolled for myself. What’s unique about the American is that it’s 100% made in the U.S.—from the tobacco to the packaging. Every component is sourced from American growers and manufacturers. My goal was to create a world-class cigar that stands alongside the great cigars of Latin America, and I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished with the American.
LS: Are there any other cigars that are completely Americanmade and handmade?
DN: Not that I know of. It’s tough because cigar-making is labor-intensive, and labor costs are much higher in the U.S. than in Latin America. That’s why so many factories in Tampa closed. We knew the American wouldn’t be immediately profitable, but my family and I felt it was important to keep the tradition alive. Our goal is to break even with the American and what we’re doing here—tours, tastings, events. That’s probably why no one else is doing this.
When we started the American project, I wasn’t sure if we could make something flavorful and complex given the limited varieties of American-grown tobacco. Luckily, we partnered with Jeff Horsch at Corona Cigar Company, who was growing tobacco again in Florida. His Corojo wrapper pairs beautifully with the Connecticut and Pennsylvania tobaccos in the binder and filler, making the American a really exceptional cigar.
LS: What’s coming up next? Any new releases on the horizon?
DN: In addition to the American, we just launched the Angel Cuesta cigar. I smoked one last night, and it was fantastic—very evenly balanced. Angel Cuesta has a rich history, dating back to 1884. It was created for the King of Spain by Angel Cuesta and his partner, Pellegrina Rain. The Cuesta family eventually passed the brand down to my grandfather. Reviving this cigar felt like the right way to honor that tradition.
In about two weeks, we’re also shipping the Leroy Neiman Collector's Edition cigar. Leroy Neiman was a famous American artist known for his vibrant portraits of icons like Muhammad Ali and Frank Sinatra, and he never painted without a cigar in hand. We’ve partnered with the Leroy Neiman Foundation to create a special cigar using his artwork on the packaging. All profits will support arts education in public schools around Tampa, which aligns with Leroy’s legacy.
LS: That’s exciting! What’s the latest on those projects?
DN: The Leroy Neiman cigar is shipping in two weeks, and the boxes are almost ready. I’ll have a press release soon.
LS: I remember you mentioned something at the PCA Trade Show that caught my attention.
DN: Yes, about a year ago, I got a call from the NBA. At first, I thought it was the National Business Association or something, but it was actually the National Basketball Association! They wanted us to make humidors out of old basketball court wood. They sent us panels from the 2011 NBA All-Star game in LA, where Kobe Bryant was MVP.
LS: That’s incredible! How did the humidors turn out?
DN: We crafted 40 humidors from that wood, each one unique. The court wood has the shoe marks from players, and it’s not perfectly smooth, which adds a special texture. The process was challenging because the wood was full of staples and glue, but we created something really special. Each humidor will retail for $3,000, and they’ll come with 30 American All-Star cigars—one for each NBA team.
LS: How are you deciding who gets them?
DN: That’s been tough. About 150 retailers requested the humidors, but I’m keeping one for the NBA and one for myself—just in case someone like Michael Jordan wants one!
LS: You can’t say no to that!
DN: Exactly! We hope to make more humidors next year from another court, but this project really highlights the craftsmanship of handmade cigars.
LS: What other projects are on the horizon for El Reloj?
DN: We’re building a 12-room luxury hotel with a café and cigar lounge on the first floor. It’ll offer visitors a first-class experience and showcase our cigar heritage. We’re also restoring the Sanchez Haya building across the street, bringing back its original café and cigar lounge from a hundred years ago.
LS: That sounds incredible.
DN: And we’re building Cigar Workers Park across from El Reloj. It’s a tribute to the thousands of workers who contributed to Tampa’s cigar industry. We’re also reconstructing a historic cigar tobacco barn to show visitors the full process, from seed to smoke.
LS: You’ve got a lot of fantastic projects lined up, Drew. I can’t wait to see how it all comes together.
DN: Thanks, Lincoln! We’re excited about the future of El Reloj and continuing to honor Tampa’s cigar legacy.
LS: As a fourth-generation cigar maker, what legacy do you want to leave behind? What’s your vision for the future?
DN: My goal is to ensure we keep handcrafting cigars the same way my great-grandfather and grandfather did 100 years ago. In a world that’s constantly advancing, cigars remain one of the few things still done the old-school way—by hand. Every cigar is a little different, not homogenized. If we can continue this tradition another 100 years, I’ll consider it a success. El Reloj is the last factory of its kind in the U.S., and I’m determined to preserve that history.
From Cigars to Masterpieces
ROBERT GLICK’S ARTISTIC EVOLUTION WITH ART DE FUMAR
Robert Glick, a New York lawyer by day, transforms cigar bands into intricate art through his venture, Art de Fumar. His unique creations, ranging from humidors to framed pieces, blend his passion for cigars with artistic innovation. In this interview, we delve into his creative process and the impact of his work on the cigar community.
INTERVIEW BY BAILEY KERWICK
What inspired you to transition from a legal career to creating art with cigar bands?
Robert Glick: I still practice law and am the Managing Partner of a New York-based litigation firm. However, as a cigar enthusiast and collector, my passion for cigars led to something unexpected. Over the years, I’ve collected thousands of cigar bands, which I refer to as my “golden treasure” for their intricate, miniature masterpieces. Instead of throwing them away, I began creating art from them— starting with a wood coaster—and eventually expanded to designing cigar accessories and large pieces of art. What began as a hobby has blossomed into something much more.
Can you walk us through your design process? How do you choose and incorporate elements like cigar bands and box labels into your artwork?
RG: My design process is incredibly detailed. Each band is cut into smaller pieces and sorted into categories—almost like paint colors in a palette. The bands dictate where they want to go; it’s like solving a puzzle. I use specialty scissors, adhesives, and even tweezers to ensure precision. I often imagine myself as a surgeon during the process, crafting intricate and seamless designs. The size of the artwork dictates whether I use cigar bands, box labels, or both, and I apply these techniques to create everything from lighters to framed art and even musical instruments.
Your work has gained attention from various sectors within the cigar industry. How has this influenced or shaped your art and business approach?
RG: I’ve had the honor of creating pieces for leaders in the cigar industry, such as Carlito Fuente and Jorge Padron. I was also asked to design the cigar box for this year’s Procigar Festival in the Dominican Republic, which was a proud moment for me. The industry’s familyoriented culture has welcomed me with open arms, and I’ve found ways to give back by donating pieces to charity events. This sense of community and support has strengthened my commitment to the art and the industry.
You’ve created everything from humidors to framed art. Which piece of your collection holds the most personal significance, and why?
RG: All my pieces are like my children—I don’t claim to have a favorite. However, I’m particularly proud of the pieces that decorate Eight Cigar Lounge in Las Vegas’ Resorts World hotel and the cigar factories around the world. Each new design project, whether it’s a chess table or something completely outside the box, is a reflection of my passion for innovation and creativity.
What advice would you give to aspiring artists looking to find their niche or blend their passions, much like you have with cigars and art?
RG: My advice is to always rely on your inner passion and allow yourself to think outside the box. Don’t be afraid to try new concepts and approaches. Most importantly, let your art express what’s in your heart, mind, and soul—whether it’s cigar bands or another medium. When you put your mind to something, anything is possible.

The story of The Tributary Cigars began as a simple dream shared by two friends, Eric Martinez and Vince Ontiveros. Both longtime cigar enthusiasts, they envisioned opening a cigar lounge in Albuquerque, New Mexico. But what started as a plan for a local lounge quickly evolved into a far more ambitious project: creating a cigar brand that stood for unity, quality, and passion.
The name "The Tributary" reflects their vision of various streams coming together to form something greater than the sum of its parts. When Eric and Vince connected with Dr. Rubin Cockrell—a retired professor, cigar connoisseur, and business expert—their vision took shape. The trio brought their diverse backgrounds and expertise together, forming a partnership that would pave the way for a new kind of cigar experience.
CRAFTSMANSHIP AT ITS CORE
At the heart of The Tributary Cigars is a deep commitment to craftsmanship. Every cigar in their lineup is meticulously handcrafted using premium tobaccos sourced from some of the most renowned regions in the world, including the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua. The founders work closely with master blenders in the Dominican Republic to create cigars that reflect their unwavering attention to detail and dedication to quality.
The Mäk-sē Collection, a standout in their lineup, embodies this approach. Handcrafted with high-priming Nicaraguan tobaccos and wrapped in either Ecuadorian or Connecticut leaves, this line delivers bold, vibrant flavors. Notes of pepper, espresso, and dark chocolate fill the profile, creating a cigar that is both complex and satisfying. Meanwhile, the Vieros Premium Cigars offer a more refined experience, blending Dominican tobaccos with Connecticut Shade and Habano wrappers for a creamy, balanced smoke.
But what sets The Tributary Cigars apart isn’t just the quality of their tobacco or the precision of their craftsmanship. It’s the way they honor tradition while pushing the boundaries of what a cigar can be. They balance time-honored cigar-making techniques with a fresh, modern perspective, constantly innovating and exploring new blends that keep the experience exciting for their loyal customers.
BUILDING COMMUNITY THROUGH THE ART OF SMOKING
The Tributary Cigars is more than just a brand—it’s a community. The founders believe that cigars are a shared experience, bringing people together from all walks of life to bond over a shared appreciation for craftsmanship and relaxation. Whether it’s through their interactive online events, cigar education programs, or in-person experiences, The Tributary strives to create spaces where cigar lovers can connect and learn.
Their website and social media platforms are designed to be hubs of activity, offering everything from educational content to pairing recommendations that elevate the smoking experience. Guided tastings and blending workshops led by the founders and master blenders provide enthusiasts with a deeper understanding of the craft. Whether someone is new to cigars or a seasoned aficionado, The Tributary ensures that every customer feels welcome, engaged, and part of the brand's journey.
Moreover, the brand’s focus on education sets it apart in the luxury cigar space. The Tributary Cigars doesn’t just want people to enjoy their cigars—they want them to understand the craftsmanship behind each one. Through factory tours, cigar clubs, and in-depth educational materials, they offer an immersive experience that connects consumers to the history and art of cigar-making.
SOURCING EXCELLENCE: THE FOUNDATION OF FLAVOR
The foundation of any great cigar is its tobacco, and The Tributary Cigars takes this aspect seriously. Their team is dedicated to sourcing the finest leaves from top-tier regions like Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic. From the sundrenched fields of Estelí to the aromatic valleys of Jalapa, each leaf is chosen for its distinctive qualities.
Working directly with farmers who share their passion for excellence, The Tributary ensures that every leaf used in their cigars is of the highest quality. The brand also places an emphasis on sustainability, forming long-term partnerships with growers to promote ethical practices and support local communities.
Once harvested, the tobacco undergoes a meticulous curing and aging process that brings out the rich, complex flavors that define The Tributary’s blends. Whether it’s the bold, spicy notes of Nicaraguan tobacco or the smooth, creamy sweetness of Dominican leaves, every blend is crafted to offer a unique and memorable smoking experience.
THE CREATIVE PROCESS: CRAFTING A NEW BLEND
For The Tributary, creating a new cigar blend is both an art and a science. It starts with a vision—a specific flavor profile or smoking experience that the founders want to bring to life. From there, master blenders experiment with hundreds of prototypes, adjusting the proportions of wrapper, binder, and filler tobaccos to achieve the perfect balance.
2023 SAN FRANCISCO
But the process doesn’t stop once a promising blend is found. The cigar is then aged further to harmonize its flavors, undergoing a series of blind taste tests with experts and loyal customers. Only once a blend has passed this rigorous testing does it move into production. It’s a process that can take months or even years, but for The Tributary, it’s worth the wait. Every cigar that carries their name must meet their exacting standards of quality and craftsmanship.
PAIRING CIGARS FOR THE PERFECT EXPERIENCE
Pairing cigars with fine spirits is an essential part of the luxury smoking experience, and The Tributary excels in this area. Their cigars are crafted to pair beautifully with whiskey, rum, cognac, and even wine, enhancing the enjoyment of both the smoke and the drink. Rich, full-bodied cigars like those in the Mäk-sē Collection are perfect alongside aged bourbons and dark rums, while lighter blends pair effortlessly with sparkling wines and floral brandies.
The Tributary is constantly exploring new pairings and collaborations with other premium brands, creating unique experiences for their customers. From in-person cigar and spirit pairing events to curated online content, they invite cigar lovers to explore new ways to enjoy their favorite cigars.
LOOKING TO THE FUTURE
The Tributary Cigars is not content to rest on its laurels. As they continue to grow, they’re committed to expanding their offerings while maintaining the personal touch that has defined their brand. This includes releasing small-batch, limited-edition cigars that celebrate the artistry behind their blends.
The brand is also planning to launch online masterclasses, providing an even deeper dive into the world of cigar-making. These interactive events will feature insights from their master blenders, allowing customers to learn more about the intricate process that goes into each cigar.
Sustainability is another focus for The Tributary moving forward. From eco-friendly packaging to more efficient production techniques, they’re working to ensure that their cigars not only offer the finest smoking experience but also reflect a commitment to the environment.
A LEGACY IN THE MAKING
At its core, The Tributary Cigars is about connection—connection to the craft, connection to community, and connection to the experience of smoking a fine cigar. By blending tradition with innovation, they’re creating a brand that honors the past while looking to the future.
The Tributary Cigars is more than just a name; it’s a journey, a community, and a celebration of the art of cigar-making. As they continue to expand, there’s no doubt that their legacy will only grow stronger, igniting a new era of luxury smoking for enthusiasts around the world. Whether you’re a seasoned smoker or new to the world of cigars, The Tributary promises an experience that is rich, memorable, and truly extraordinary.

Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves on Pantalones Tequila, Family, and Living Life to the Fullest
INTERVIEW BY LINCOLN SALAZAR
PHOTO CRED: MILLER MOBLEY | AUGUST IMAGE
When Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves come together, sparks fly—and so does their tequila. The Hollywood superstar and his entrepreneurial wife have poured their hearts into Pantalones Tequila, a brand that’s as spirited and vibrant as their own love story. Born from a shared passion for good times and great tequila, Pantalones is more than just a bottle on the shelf; it’s a celebration of life, love, and all the adventures that come with it.
In this exclusive Q&A, Matthew and Camila invite us into their world, where Texas grit meets Brazilian flair, and where family always comes first. They reveal how their roots and experiences have shaped not only their brand but also their approach to life and business. From the thrill of launching a new venture to the challenges of balancing it all, they share the secrets behind their success—and the lessons they’re passing on to their children. With their trademark humor and wisdom, Matthew and Camila show us that living life to the fullest means embracing every opportunity with open arms—and maybe a margarita in hand.
EARLY BEGINNINGS
Lincoln Salazar (LS): Matthew, looking back at your career, from "Dazed and Confused" to "Dallas Buyers Club," how has your journey in Hollywood shaped your entrepreneurial spirit today, including ventures like Pantalones Tequila?
Matthew McConaughey (MM): When my career started, I was just looking for work and a chance to perform. With success, I’ve been able to choose projects that challenge me and feed my character rather than just my celebrity. Pantalones Tequila is one of those projects. It’s a lot of fun, and it aligns with my appreciation for “good times.” So, Pantalones continues to feed my character.
CAREER HIGHLIGHTS
LS: Camila, aside from Pantalones Tequila, what other projects or endeavors are you most proud of, and how do they reflect your passions?
Camila Alves McConaughey (CAM): I’ve worked on many projects, from handbag design to hosting TV shows and walking the runway. One project I’m particularly proud of is my NY Times bestselling book “Just Try One Bite.” Additionally, creating the Women of Today network has been fulfilling, as it connects women across cultures and communities. I’m also proud of our work with the Just Keep Living Foundation. With Pantalones, I’ve found another exciting and passionate project to share with Matthew.
COLLABORATIVE PARTNERSHIP
LS: Matthew and Camila, what strengths do each of you bring to your collaborations in ventures like Pantalones Tequila and in your philanthropic initiatives? Could you also share more about the causes closest to your hearts and how you integrate philanthropy into your daily lives?
MM: Camila is incredibly curious and has a knack for recognizing business opportunities. I’m more of a natural marketeer, able to blend multiple ideas into one coherent message. Together, we focus on our Just Keep Living Foundation and respond to natural disasters in communities we care about.
CAM: Matthew’s creativity with Pantalones campaigns is impressive, and I ensure we explore every possibility for the brand. I meticulously evaluate every decision to maintain high quality.
CULTURAL INFLUENCE
LS: Matthew, how do your Texas roots and Camila's Brazilian heritage influence the branding and marketing of Pantalones Tequila?
MM: We literally met over margaritas. Tequila was the juice on our lips when we first spoke the language of love on the night we met. We’re both from rural country beginnings, we both like to dance, and we both love good music. Pantalones goes quite well with all of those things.
CAM: Tequila is part of our own love story, and I have really enjoyed so many nights with Matthew over a good cocktail. It really is the best thing we have made with our pants on, and it’s fun to share it with everyone.
MARKET STRATEGY
LS: How do you navigate the competitive spirits industry landscape with Pantalones Tequila, and which marketing strategies have proven effective for the brand?
MM: The name. Once we got the name Pantalones I knew we had a marketing strategy in perpetuity. Just deconstructing the name “Pantalones”, “Pants”, and making our campaign a cheeky take on the “fun you can have when you’re NOT wearing them”, well, the good time humor is limitless.
ENTREPRENEURIAL CHALLENGES
LS: Camila, what have been some of the biggest challenges you've faced in launching Pantalones Tequila, and how did you overcome them?
CAM: It was important for me that we find a tequila that was organic. Growing up on a farm, I always had that farm-to-table experience, and it’s something we share with our kids when we can. Creating a delicious product that is also fully organic was a priority, and that challenge was key to shaping the brand.
LIFE LESSONS
LS: Matthew, are there particular insights or lessons from your Hollywood experiences that have influenced how you approach entrepreneurship and family life today?
MM: Try and do it together whenever possible. Even when I go on location for a film project, Camila always ensures the family comes along. Any entrepreneurial idea that keeps one of us away from the family for too long is usually off the table quickly.
FAMILY DYNAMICS
LS: How do you balance your professional lives while maintaining a strong family unit, and what values do you aim to instill in your children?
MM: Lead by example. That’s the best advice we can give. Kids learn from those around them, and when they see family and friends leading lives that emphasize value, service, and gratitude, it becomes easier for them to do the same.
ADVICE FOR ASPIRING INDIVIDUALS
LS: What advice would you give to young people aspiring to make a positive impact in their careers and communities, based on your own experiences and lessons learned?
MM: It’s nice to care, but caring for something is the real challenge. Time and effort are the hardest parts of caring for. If you truly care, you have to make time and sacrifice to serve others. It’s hard, but ultimately, and somewhat selfishly, serving others serves oneself.
LEGACY AND IMPACT
LS: Finally, what kind of legacy do you hope to leave behind, whether through your acting careers, entrepreneurial ventures, or philanthropic efforts?
CAM: We want to raise children who are confident, caring, and respect themselves enough to respect others. We hope they understand and seek to attain the things they truly value in life.

LEYENDA DE MÉXICO: HER JOURNEY OF PASSION AND TRADITION
WORDS BY LOGAN SMITH
In the heart of Jalisco, Mexico, where the red soil nurtures the agave fields and ancient legends linger in the air, Leyenda de México Tequila embodies more than just a spirit; it tells a story of passion, heritage, and perseverance. Known as Mexico’s “Queen of Tequila,” the founder has turned a deeply personal vision into a global phenomenon, establishing Leyenda de México as a paragon of excellence in the tequila industry. By harmonizing traditional craftsmanship with modern sensibilities, the brand captures the essence of Mexican legends in every bottle. As the industry undergoes a renaissance, Leyenda de México’s unwavering commitment to quality and authenticity has set a new standard, reinforcing its influential presence on the global stage. Here’s an in-depth look at the journey behind this remarkable brand, its challenges, and its profound impact on the world of tequila.
The inception of Leyenda de México is deeply intertwined with a poignant personal history. The brand was conceived from the heartfelt desire of its founder to fulfill her father’s dream of having his own tequila. “I wanted to give him this gift, but fate had other plans,” she reflects. “He passed away before I could present it to him. In the end, it was as if he had given me the gift of life, guiding me to create Leyenda de México.” The brand was envisioned as a tribute to her father and a way to share the rich Mexican heritage with the world. Every bottle of Leyenda de México is infused with the essence of Mexican legends, serving as a testament to the cultural richness of the region.
Entering a traditionally male-dominated industry presented significant challenges. “In the past, the tequila industry was predominantly male, with seasoned experts who had inherited their knowledge through generations,” she explains. “I understood their initial skepticism towards a young woman without a tequila legacy.” Overcoming these obstacles required immense dedication and hard work. “I had to prove myself and earn their trust, demonstrating that I was not only capable but also deeply committed to the craft.” Her perseverance and passion eventually won over skeptics, paving the way for her success in a challenging environment.
Leyenda de México is renowned for its exceptional quality, which is a result of a meticulous production process. “We use only the finest agaves from the mountains of Jalisco, where the mineral-rich red soil imparts unique fruity and herbal notes,” she shares. The process is deeply artisanal, avoiding chemicals and adhering to traditional methods. “I personally oversee every step, from cultivating the land to the final product, striving to honor the methods of our ancestors.” This commitment ensures that each bottle of Leyenda de México is a reflection of the pure, natural essence of tequila, crafted with respect for time-honored traditions.
Sustainability and ethical practices are at the core of Leyenda de México’s operations. “We adhere to strict regulations set by the Tequila Regulatory Council, which oversees every stage of our production process,” she notes. “I am personally involved in ensuring that our practices meet the highest standards of sustainability and ethics.” This dedication to ethical practices not only guarantees a high-quality product but also ensures that each bottle is crafted with respect for both the environment and the people involved in its production.
As the leader of an all-female team, she believes women bring unique perspectives to tequila production. “Women bring a unique energy, responsibility, and dedication. Their meticulous attention to detail and passion for excellence ensure that our processes are not just mechanical but infused with care and love,” she explains. The team’s dedication extends beyond their work, contributing to the creation of something truly special that supports their families and upholds the brand’s legacy.
Reflecting on her 25 years in the industry, she recounts pivotal moments that have shaped Leyenda de México’s success. “We’ve faced many challenges, but they have only strengthened us as a team,” she says. “My role is to provide my team with the tools and knowledge for excellence, but it is their dedication and passion that drive our success.” Witnessing the empowerment of women as they gain confidence and opportunity has been one of the most rewarding aspects of her journey. “The collaboration and unity among our team create the magic behind Leyenda de México, and I am proud to see our collective talent shine through in every drop.”
As tequila experiences a global resurgence, Leyenda de México is poised to play a leading role in the industry’s evolution. “There is a growing appreciation for natural, additive-free tequila,” she notes. “Leyenda de México, with its commitment to purity and tradition, offers added value for the generations seeking authentic, high-quality tequila.” This forward-thinking approach positions the brand as a key player in shaping the future of tequila.
Leyenda de México’s packaging is as distinctive as its tequila. Originally intended to feature a female form, design constraints led to an adaptation that still honors its heritage. “The final design, with medallion motifs, reflects Mexican legends and our rich cultural heritage,” she explains. The packaging serves as a visual testament to the brand’s commitment to its roots and the stories it wishes to tell.
Leyenda de México is more than just a tequila brand; it is a celebration of Mexican heritage, craftsmanship, and the enduring spirit of its founder. Each bottle tells a story of tradition, passion, and the pursuit of excellence, offering a taste of Mexico’s rich cultural legacy in every sip.
SUCCESS FLOWING
HOW DREAD RIVER DISTILLING IS REDEFINING CRAFT SPIRITS IN BIRMINGHAM
WORDS BY BAILEY KERWICK
In the vibrant and historic city of Birmingham, Alabama, a new legend is rising from beneath the streets, intertwining local lore with exceptional craftsmanship. Dread River Distilling Co., founded by Dr. Jeff Dugas and Partner, John Cubelic, is not just a distillery but a beacon of innovation and tradition. The name "Dread River" evokes a sense of mystery and grandeur, inspired by a mythic underground river rumored to flow beneath Birmingham's surface. This imaginative name reflects the distillery's deep connection to the city’s rich history and natural resources.
Founded in August 2019, Dread River Distilling Co. embarked on its journey with the ambition to fill a significant gap in Birmingham's landscape. At the time, Birmingham was the largest city in North America without a commercial distillery, a fact that intrigued Dr. Dugas and his team. Driven by a passion for both science and craftsmanship, Dr. Dugas, a trained orthopedic surgeon with a background in chemical engineering, transitioned from homebrewing to professional distilling. His vision was clear: to create a distillery that would stand out not just for its spirits but for its commitment to quality and local heritage.
The story of Dread River is as compelling as the spirits it produces. From its initial conception to its rapid rise, the distillery has become a symbol of Birmingham's growing appreciation for artisanal products. The journey has not been without its challenges, including the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic just months after the grand opening. Yet, these challenges have only strengthened the brand’s resolve and commitment to its community. In response to the pandemic, Dread River repurposed its bourbon into hand sanitizer, supporting local healthcare facilities and restaurants during a critical time.
As the distillery flourishes, it remains deeply rooted in its local context while embracing a broader vision for the future. Dread River is not just creating spirits; it’s crafting an experience that embodies the essence of Birmingham. With a diverse portfolio that ranges from bourbon to specialty spirits and a commitment to quality that is evident in every bottle, Dread River is redefining what it means to be a craft distillery in today’s competitive market.
FROM VISION TO REALITY: THE BIRTH OF DREAD RIVER
Dr. Jeff Dugas’s journey from orthopedic surgeon to distiller began with a simple passion for craftsmanship and a fascination with fermentation. A homebrewer for years, Dr. Dugas discovered that Birmingham was the largest city in North America without a commercial distillery. This revelation, coupled with his desire to bring high-quality spirits to the region, led to the creation of Dread River Distilling Co. in August 2019.
The initial plan was to launch a small-scale operation. However, after visiting over 50 distilleries and gaining valuable industry insights, Dr. Dugas and his team realized the potential for a larger project. They expanded their vision, leading to a grand opening that set the stage for a new chapter in Birmingham’s spirits scene.
ADAPTING TO CHALLENGES: THE IMPACT OF COVID-19
The timing of Dread River’s launch was both fortuitous and challenging. Just six months into their operation, the COVID-19 pandemic hit, creating uncertainty and disruption. With limited brand recognition and the hospitality industry facing significant hurdles, Dread River quickly adapted. They repurposed some of their bourbon into hand sanitizer, distributing it free of charge to local clinics, hospitals, and restaurants. This act of community support addressed an urgent need and helped establish Dread River as a committed and responsive member of the Birmingham community.
CRAFTSMANSHIP AND INNOVATION: THE ESSENCE OF DREAD RIVER
The name “Dread River” connects deeply with Birmingham’s history and natural resources. Inspired by a fictional tale from the early 1800s about a massive river beneath the city, rumored to be filled with monsters, and a 1900s editorial referencing a “Dread River,” the name intrigued Dr. Dugas and his team. They embraced it as a metaphor for life’s journey and their commitment to enhancing that journey with high-quality spirits. Their internal tagline, “Let our spirits lift yours,” reflects this philosophy, emphasizing the brand’s dedication to providing a superior experience.
Dread River’s production process is a testament to their commitment to quality. The distillery sources high-quality heirloom grains and barrels from top cooperages. Advanced equipment, including a Kothe Still still and jacketed fermenters, ensures precise temperature control. A distinguishing feature of Dread River’s production is their heart-cut-only distillation process. By discarding the heads and tails and using only the cleanest part of the distillation, Dread River produces exceptionally clean and refined spirits, setting them apart from many other craft distilleries.
A DIVERSE PORTFOLIO: FROM BOURBON TO SPECIALTY SPIRITS
Dread River offers a diverse range of spirits, including vodka, rum, gin, bourbon, single barrel bourbon, aged agave, and rye. Their gin is known for its floral and citrusy notes, meeting the 51% juniper threshold. The bourbon, aged in new charred white oak barrels, is carefully blended to balance flavors of caramel, vanilla, and oak. Alabama’s heat accelerates the aging process, enhancing the bourbon’s complexity. The distillery also produces specialty products such as dill pickle vodka and peach jalapeño moonshine, showcasing their creativity and versatility.
The aging process for their bourbon is particularly noteworthy. The bourbon is aged in new charred white oak barrels with a number three char. Dread River blends barrels from both younger and older wood to achieve a consistent flavor profile. The combination of Alabama’s climate and the mineral-rich water used in the distillation process contributes to the exceptional quality of their spirits.
LOOKING AHEAD: EXPANSION AND FUTURE GOALS
Dread River Distilling Co. is poised for continued growth and expansion. The distillery has already made strides in distribution, reaching Tennessee and targeting Alabama, Mississippi, and the Florida panhandle. They are also looking to expand into states like California and New York. Direct-toconsumer sales are available in 42 states, though Alabama and Mississippi are currently excluded. This national footprint reflects the growing recognition and demand for Dread River’s products.
The distillery’s success on the competition circuit further underscores its commitment to quality. Dread River recently won gold and silver medals at the San Francisco Spirits Competition and was named one of USA Today’s Top 10 New Distilleries. Their Double Barrel Aged Agave and Rum Finished Bourbon both received Silver Medals and were among the best examples of their categories. These accolades validate the quality of their products and highlight their position in the industry.
A LASTING LEGACY: COMMUNITY AND CRAFT
As Dr. Dugas reflects on the legacy of Dread River, he emphasizes the importance of community and quality. He views the distillery as a valuable resource for Birmingham, creating an experience that enhances the lives of locals and visitors alike. The positive atmosphere at the distillery, combined with the exceptional quality of their spirits, has fostered a strong connection with the community. Customers often share their enjoyment of Dread River’s products through gatherings and celebrations, reinforcing the distillery’s impact on their lives.
Dr. Dugas’s vision for Dread River extends beyond personal success. He and his team are dedicated to building a brand that represents excellence and innovation. The focus is on delivering high-quality products and creating a memorable experience for customers. As Dr. Dugas puts it, “It’s not about us as individuals. We’re thrilled with the brand, the direction it’s going, and the quality we continue to put out.” This commitment to craftsmanship and community ensures that Dread River Distilling Co. will continue to flow with success, setting new standards in the craft spirits industry and elevating Birmingham’s spirit—one bottle at a time.

Prolijo Mezcal is the result of a collaboration between Co-Founders Juan Peña, a native of Mexico City and Katie Reichelt. Prolijo Mezcal is a minority owned independent company out of Chicago. Juan and Katie started Prolijo Mezcal with one strategy, to produce small batch mezcal with Cultural Conscience, sourcing everything out of Oaxaca, Mexico.
Born in Mexico City with Otomi and Purepecha roots, Juan was no stranger to enjoying traditional Mexican spirits such a sotol, pulque, and mezcal. Having worked on world-class spirit brands, both Juan and Katie were determined to create a premium product that preserved the heritage and authenticity of mezcal, while continuing to maintain the integrity and flavor of the spirit. “It was extremely important for us to respect the culture and traditions of Mexico and their people while introducing Prolijo Mezcal in the U.S.,” said Juan. “This is a project that developed out of a passion for authentic mezcal, but also a love of Mexico.” www.ProlijoMezcal.com
The pair has recently launched Tierra y Libertad Tequila, an exquisite high-proof tequila, that transcends the ordinary and invites connoisseurs into a world of pure, unadulterated craftsmanship. Distilled from sun-kissed blue agave, this additive-free elixir is a testament to tradition and purity, capturing the essence of the land from which it hails.
The phrase, “Tierra y Libertad” was used during the Mexican revolution, which in a short time became hope for people who were fighting for their lands, better jobs and dignity.
Our high proof tequila is something that for us, is going back in time and finding the old school way of producing tequila. Letting the agave have conversations with your nose, palate, and sight creates a romance between the agave and our consummers. www.DrinkTyL.com

SAN DIEGO’S TOP BARS ARE MIXING UP THE UNEXPECTED WORDS BY LILI KIM
We’ve officially passed the halfway point of the year. If you still haven’t checked off that box on your new year’s resolution list that says, “step out of your comfort zone”, what better way to do so than to ditch the Tito’s sodas and add some new cocktail favorites to your boozy repertoire. Gone are the days of simply ordering the house margarita or a classic old fashioned because that’s what your dad and your dad’s dad drank.
TINI-FYING EVERYTHING
The martini comeback is one of my favorite trends to have come back in 2024, and not just because I feel like a James Bond character while drinking one. But things have gone way past the century long debate between olive or onion. Bars across the nation are tini-fying everything from tomatoes to pickles to sweet lychee.
THE LION’S SHARE
629 Kettner Blvd, San Diego, CA 92101
The Lion’s Share in downtown San Diego has revised the simple vodka and olive concoction into a briny and boozy glass of goodness. Just like their eccentric yet sophisticated interior, the cocktail menu colors outside the lines and invents what they call “future classics” by turning “present classics” on their heads. Their housespecial Brindr includes vodka, moletto tomato gin, menegiks gin (better set out the aspirins on your nightstand now), mixed with dolin dry, house pickle brine, and curry tincture. Drink one of these and you’d out-martini Mr. Bond himself.
THE AGE OF UMAMI
Umami – the savory flavor often found in meat soy, and cheese – is a staple element in creating complex, lip-smacking recipes. The Japanese term (meaning delicious taste) has grown in popularity in the United States over the past couple decades, while remaining tethered to the realm of food and cooking. Now, however, umami has infiltrated the world of luxury cocktails. Old fashioneds are getting the tomahawk treatment and arrive in cauldrons of smoke and mystery. Soy sauce is drizzled over clear liquor. Bacon is promoted from being a mere bloody mary topper.
THE WHISKEY HOUSE
420 3rd Ave, San Diego, CA 92101
If bacon is your umami of choice, indulge in The Whiskey House’s Smokey Bacon Old Fashioned with bacon infused whiskey, smoked maple, and house-made barrel aged bitters. Savory and strong in all the best ways. Not a bacon buff? The Whiskey House has a collection of 4000+ whiskeys (a Guinness World Record!), so you can find whatever you need – no exaggeration.
BOTANICALS & BLOOMS
Of course, botanicals aren’t new in the cocktail world, but they have recently gone through their own renaissance. Whether it’s a celebration of gardens finally reaping their harvest, or a collective desire to sip on refreshing drinks in the summer, florals and botanicals have taken over cocktail menus everywhere. Of course, you can rely on your usual suspects like lavender, rose, and elderflower for florals or thyme, basil and mint for herbs. But why not try some more imaginative options such as vivid butterfly pea flowers, yerba mate’, lemongrass, and pink peppercorns? It’ll only make your efforts to “eat more plants” that much more luxurious.
BOTANICA
3095 El Cajon Blvd, San Diego, CA 92104
What better place to look for botanical marvels than at Botanica Art & Cocktail Bar in the North Park neighborhood of San Diego. Here, you can find tons of botanical spirits and reinventions of well-loved classics, such as a gin sour, which has been recreated into the bar’s own Hidden Touch cocktail. The base liquor is Bols genever, a Dutch gin, mixed with lemon verbena, honey, aloro (bay leaf liqueur), genepy (French alpine herbal liqueur), lemon, egg white, absinthe (a high proof liquor distilled with anise, wormwood, and fennel), and sorel leaves. In other words, botanical + botanical + botanical + botanical…you get the picture.
GOOD FIRST IMPRESSIONS
A good cocktail can be so much more than a tasty prop to make parties less awkward or a means to a buzz. To many mixologists and bartenders, a good cocktail is a Picasso in its own right. And like a masterpiece is presented in the finest gold frame, a special cocktail should have its own beautiful frame in the form of glasses, ice cubes, and garnishes. Today, these extra spruces of décor can give your cocktail that extra sense of poise, luxury, and creativity. So don’t be surprised if you find caviar and microgreens lounging atop your champagne, while ice cubes shaped like stars or bar logos swim in the bubbles.
THE REALM OF 52 REMEDIES
4805 Convoy St, San Diego, CA 92111
Even though speakeasies have become fairly popular, I still like to imagine I miraculously stumble upon each one like a cinematic spy or an insider of a secret society. At the Realm of 52 Remedies, however, you don’t need to use much pretending power. Located behind a hidden (fake) apothecary in a restaurant, the Realm is a 1920’s speakeasy inspired by Eastern Asian countries such as China and Korea, oozing with glamour and enchantment. Every remedy, or cocktail, has a story and draws inspiration from various Asian countries and their cultures. The 21 Assassins cocktail, for example, is inspired by the 1963 Japanese film of the same name. With a 10-year single malt scotch, alma tepec liqueur, cinpatrazzo and blood oranges amaros, honey, and smoked saline, it offers a perfect fusion of smoky, sweet, bitter and spice. But to further elevate the drink, it’s served with an ice cube branded with the Realm’s logo, and a sprig of baby’s breath, offsetting the intense flavors (and intense film the drink alludes to).
WHERE BOLDNESS MEETS REFINEMENT TELSÓN TEQUILA
IN CONVERSATION WITH VP OF SALES DAVID DURAN
INTERVIEW BY LINCOLN SALAZAR
Lincoln Salazar (LS): David, I’m always curious about the backstory when it comes to premium spirits. Telsón Tequila has a distinct presence — what sparked the creation of the brand? Was it a lifelong dream or something that evolved more organically?
David Duran (DD): It actually evolved organically, which is the beauty of it. A group of friends — myself included — were brought together by our shared love for food and drinks. We had so many memorable dinners filled with laughter, great conversations, and the kind of camaraderie that makes life richer. One day, we realized we wanted to create something that captured those moments. That’s when we raised our glasses to a new opportunity: crafting a tequila that reflects the boldness and refinement of our journey.
LS: I love that — creating something that feels personal. With tequila, though, the production process can really make or break it. What makes your approach at Telsón stand out?
DD: You’re absolutely right. The process is everything. We’re fortunate to be partners in our distillery, NOM 1589, La Galeria, which gives us complete control over every step — from the agave to the bottle. We crush our agave with a traditional tahona, slowly cook it in brick ovens, and use both stainless column and copper alambiques for distillation. We only take the heart of the distillation, leaving out the heads and tails, which is a crucial part of achieving that smooth, refined taste.
LS: Having that hands-on control must make a huge difference. Speaking of which, where do you source your ingredients? I know that plays a big role in the final product.
DD: Definitely. We’re actually partners in an agave farm, but it won’t be a Single Estate operation for a few more years. Until then, we’ve been sourcing mature, seven-year-old Blue Weber agave from the Highlands. We’re very particular about trimming the agave to ensure it’s of the highest quality. Our water is just as important — it comes from the Tequila Valley, known for its mineral-rich, volcanic properties. It gives our tequila a smooth, soft finish that really sets it apart.
LS: That mineral-rich water sounds like an amazing touch. Now, Telsón offers a Blanco, Reposado, and Añejo, all with unique characteristics. How does the aging process influence the flavor profile of each?
DD: The aging process really shapes the personality of each tequila. Our Blanco rests in used American Oak barrels for just one to two weeks — enough to add a unique profile without overpowering its natural agave character. Reposado, on the other hand, spends 4 to 6 months in those barrels, while Añejo rests for 14 months. The longer aging process allows the Reposado and Añejo to soak up all the goodness from the oak, deepening the flavor. Even the brief rest for the Blanco adds a layer of complexity.
LS: It’s fascinating how even a short rest can transform a Blanco. So, how would you describe the flavor profiles of Telsón’s lineup? What should people expect when they taste each one?
DD: Each expression has its own story. Our Blanco is bright and clean, with natural agave sweetness, citrus notes, light minerality, and a soft texture. The Reposado introduces oak, citrus, vanilla, light spice, caramel, and a hint of cherry almond — a real crowd-pleaser. Añejo, meanwhile, is rich with vanilla, wood, dried orchard fruits, nuts, and a touch of caramel. Each one has its own signature, but they all share that smooth, approachable quality.
LS: That sounds incredible. I understand Telsón has already started making waves with some awards. How does it feel to have your hard work recognized?
DD: It’s been amazing. At Enthusiast Report, we were awarded Double Gold for our Añejo and Gold for both the Reposado and Blanco. That kind of recognition, especially from such a respected publication in the spirits and cigar world, is something we’re incredibly proud of. We’ve also received Gold Medals for all three expressions at the TAG Awards, and having someone as influential as Tony AbouGanim in the hospitality world recognize our work is a real honor. Awards like these validate the care we put into every step of the process.
LS: Awards definitely speak to the quality. Speaking of quality, are you working on any special or limited releases that your fans can look forward to?
DD: Yes! We have some exciting releases coming up. Before the end of 2024, we’ll be launching a Limited Edition Barrel Proof Reposado, and we’ll also have a Cristalino coming out for a limited release. Both have been highly anticipated by our customers. We’re always looking to bring something new to the table while maintaining the authenticity people have come to love about Telsón.
LS: It sounds like there’s always something fresh on the horizon. I noticed your brand uses the hashtag #NoCelebrityNeeded — can you tell me more about the philosophy behind that?
DD: #NoCelebrityNeeded really sums up who we are. We’re focused on building genuine, meaningful relationships with our distributors and consumers, without relying on celebrity endorsements. Our goal is to enhance people’s lives through our products and give back to the community. We value authenticity, fun, grit, and curiosity, along with principles like accountability, teamwork, and loyalty. These values guide everything we do, from production to business practices.
LS: I love that commitment to authenticity. Who do you see as your core audience? How do you connect with them?
DD: Our core audience is definitely agave lovers, but we’ve also had great success in converting fans of other clear spirits. Our story resonates with people, and the smooth taste of Telsón makes it easy for them to get on board, whether they’re experienced tequila drinkers or new to the category.
LS: It sounds like the appeal is broad. Lastly, what can we expect from Telsón Tequila in the future? Any new projects or products on the horizon?
DD: We’ve got a lot in the works! Along with our 110 Proof Reposado and Cristalino releases, we’ll be introducing 50ml bottles of all our tequilas — Blanco, Reposado, Añejo, and Cristalino. We’re also planning an Extra Añejo and launching a barrel program. Eventually, we’ll offer tours of our distillery and develop a Hacienda to create a full Telsón experience. The future is bright, and we’re excited to continue this journey with our customers.
GO SLOW, BELIZE
WHERE TIME STANDS STILL
Wild jungle, tracts of unspoiled beaches, and vibrant reef beckon in Belize, one of the Caribbean’s most wildly underrated destinations.
In 1971, French marine biologist Jacques Cousteau sailed his boat Calypso to Belize's Great Blue Hole, the world’s largest marine sinkhole, and named it one of the world's top dive sites—a level of renown elevated by his son Fabien in 2019 when he partnered with Richard Branson to explore its depths. While the submersible expedition didn’t resolve any Mayan mysteries or leviathanic myths, it did highlight the country’s natural beauty and commitment to protecting it: that same year Belize more than doubled its marine-protected areas by setting aside 11.6 percent of its territorial waters.
Today, Belize’s UNESCO World Heritage-listed barrier reef is the largest living reef in the world and while diving experiences abound, the reef’s proximity to the shoreline makes it easy for anyone to explore on a relaxed sailing or snorkeling trip.
At Hol Chan Marine Reserve, I swam languorously above majestic spotted eagle rays, turtles munching on submerged grass beds, and a shifting kaleidoscope of tropical fish gliding through corals before being (safely) encircled by huge numbers of nurse sharks and amberjack at Shark Ray Alley.
Belize’s beaches are glorious, its protected inland jungles teem with wildlife and sanctuaries in which to visit them, and the people are laid back and friendly, yet Belize has inexplicably escaped unbridled development and visitor numbers haven’t increased much since Tupac and his Death Row Records cohort vacationed here in the late nineties. Belize’s population of 440,000 was pretty much equalled by visitor numbers in 2023. The Bahamas, comparable in terms of inhabitants, saw eight million tourists; Quintana Roo in Mexico—which encompasses Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Tulum and borders Belize directly to the north—welcomed 21 million tourists during the same period.
The country’s accessibility only adds to the mystery. Direct flights from Los Angeles, Miami and Houston serve the capital Belize City; from here, it’s between one and two hours’ drive inland to zipline or raft through national parks, reserves and cave systems, or wander ruined Mayan cities established 1000 years BCE.
Heading east, Belize’s 450-or-so small islands, or “cayes” (pronounced “keys”) dotting the eastern seaboard are a short flight by turbo prop. Mangrove-and-palm-ringed Caye Caulker lives by the the motto “go slow” and is peppered with clusters of pastel-hued bungalows—hangouts for reading, napping, a sojourn while sailing, or barbecuing your catch on the beach as the sun sets over aquamarine water.
On neighboring Ambergris Caye, former fishing village San Pedro—rumored to be the unlikely inspiration for Madonna’s La Isla Bonita—has evolved into vibrant day-intonight destination where everyone gets around by go cart and celebrates everything local. Belize’s Chocolate Company’s Chocolate Boutique crafts artisanal chocolates from beans grown by southern Belize farmers. Cosmetics emporium Belizean Breezes, creator of the infamous “monkey farts” soap, does a roaring trade in all-natural unguents for face and body.
Down the beach, upscale culinary experiences at the buzzy new Alaia Belize, a 155-room resort set over 20 acres of beachfront property, also find their roots in local, sustainable products but delivered at a level I’d expect to see in LA or Miami, rather than a beach in Belize.
Mixologist Subhash Sankar—who previously worked with Michelin-starred Chef Jason Atherton of Sael, a British brasserie on London’s monarchy-funding Crown Estate—builds his bar program and mixology masterclasses around house-made and Belizean products with a mad-scientist vibe. As we talked through the nuts and bolts of crafting nut liqueurs and harvesting maya honey from the jungle, he deftly applied a blow torch to glass vials, beakers and spiral tubes, coaxing purple-blue peaflower extract into gin before adding citrus and dragonfruit ice, making the drink bloom pink as a final alchemical flourish.
Charismatic Executive Chef Alex Alcantara conjures magic of his own at the private, multi-course sensory Chef’s Table meal set within the Cellar. Marinated salmon and confit artichoke arrived wreathed in smoke under a glass cloche to heighten our attention to umami. We ate sweet bites blindfolded accompanied by what I can only describe as citrus and floral “smell cups” to explore how various assemblages influenced flavors before tucking into a kale salad made tableside with living greens from the hotel’s sustainable hydroponic gardens.
There are more upscale, locale-sensitive hospitality offerings on the horizon. Four Seasons Caye Chapel is slated to open in 2025 with 30 to 40 overwater bungalows sensitively etched onto the ecosystem of a private island. When complete, date TBD, renewable-energy-powered Blackadore Caye, a “restorative island” concept originally acquired by Leonardo DiCaprio, will encompass a wellness resort, change research station, and off-the-grid “living homes.”
And while a little luxury is always welcome, at its heart, Belize’s appeal lies in slowing down, kicking back and enjoying simple pleasures, cocooned in nature.
From Alaia, you can be at Secret Beach—the worst-kept secret on the island—in 50 minutes by golf cart or 15 minutes-ish by jet ski (depending who’s driving) to enjoy platters of fried wings, conch fritters, and shrimp ceviche to the soundtrack of Bob Marley at tables pitched in the ocean. Back in San Pedro, local bands like Coconut Trio bang out sets at beachfront bars Palapa’s and Wayo’s every day of the week with complete disregard for closing times, as bayflies take refreshing ocean dips between songs.
You can take your time when you get here, but I suggest you book that trip soon—before everyone else does.
