"Lif tyle the dream, lux y the rew d."
When I was a young kid growing up, I remember sitting with my Father at the very top of the MGM Arena in the nosebleed seats. At the time he didn’t have much money - he was a young dad, but my father always did his best, working hard and inspiring me to want more in life. I remember sitting up top of the Oscar De La Hoya fght - the bigest boxing match in the world at the timenot knowing what the world may bring to me. I remember watching AC Slater (Mario Lopez) on Saved by the Bell, my favorite tv show at the time, and seeing him lif weights and wrestle like the star he was. I remember dancing to 50 Cent songs at my prom singing, "Go Shorty, it's your birthday," never knowing that years later when I grew up, I would be having cigars, drinks, and golfng with that same artist. Sitting down with Mario Lopez at his home sharing life stories over tequila, now knowing his entire family. Sitting in a cigar lounge and putting golf balls around with Te Golden Boy himself, Oscar De La Hoya, in his ofce smoking a Fuente cigar and catching up on the last times we were together. Never did I dream of any of this, however, I knew one thing when I was young, you always have to chase your dreams.

Aston Martin DBS 770 Ultimate
by Adam Hay-Nicholls
With all car manufacturers – even exotic ones –being forced to embrace electrifcation due to netzero government policies and consign their purely internal combustion treasures to museums, what we’re witnessing right now is a fnal push by some of the most storied sports car marques to unleash their unabashed give-it-everything-you’ve-got curtain call. And behold, the latest and last DBS from Aston Martin, the DBS 770 Ultimate, which kicks of Aston’s 110th birthday celebrations.
James Bond was described by his creator, Ian Fleming, as being a “blunt instrument wielded by a government department”. It’s questionable as to whether the UK’s defense budget bean counters would sign-of the cost of a $387,600 supercar, but 007 would look very much at home in the 770 – which refers to its 770PS or, in real money, 759 bhp. That’s more horses than any series-production Aston before, and an increase of 44bhp over the standard DBS.
They say power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Therefore, this 5.2 twin-turbo V12 could pose very bad news indeed. But as a blunt instrument, goodness, it does the business. It wasn’t like the DBS was short on oomph to start with. With a gargantuan 664 lb-ft of torque available from just 1,800 bhp, it’ll take huge restraint not to shred the tires at every green light. Zero to 62 mph takes 3.4 seconds as it limbers its way up to 211 mph. That’s not an improvement on the standard car, surprisingly. Where most of the diference lies is the feel, with upgraded steering, tightened front stifness and adaptive dampers. The handling is now more precise, and the steering has more feedback, while overall ride quality is unharmed.
Then there are the aggressive, yet elegant, looks at which Aston is so masterful; additions include a new front splitter, a ‘horseshoe’ engine vent to help pull more air through the radiators, loads of carbon elements, and a new rear difuser. Most gob smacking are the 21 inch multi-spoke alloys, inspired by Aston’s wild and one-of Victor project, fnished in either satin silver or satin black. Inside, there’s additional 770 jewelry, leather, Alcantara, and carbon everywhere you look. The infotainment system remains the Aston’s weak point, and brand customers will need to wait until next year for the next-gen Mercedes-sourced UX.
The DBS 770 Ultimate is limited-edition; 300 coupes and 199 Volantes will be built and, we’re sorry to report, they’re already all sold out. Getting one’s hands on this brute-in-a-suit may require a statesanctioned assassination or two.
ISSUE 2 – 21
Ferrari Purosangue
This is the most controversial Ferrari ever to roll of Maranello’s hallowed production line. Ferrari specifcally says, ‘don’t call it an SUV,’ but there’s no way around it. ‘Super’ SUVs are not new. Supercar manufacturers have been blending their genes with that of the Range Rover for several years now. See the Aston Martin DBX and Lamborghini Urus, and the slightly less exotic oferings of Maserati, Bentley and Porsche (which now sells four times as many SUVs as it sells 911s). They’ve recognized that people love these supercar brands, and they love luxury SUVs even more. But Ferrari purists are, understandably, upset.
The Italian icon’s frst-ever four-door is called the Purosangue – pronounced purosang-way. It’s a fabulous name. The best since Testarossa (redhead). It means ‘pure blood’ in Italian, or ‘thoroughbred’, which is ftting for a marque whose symbol is the prancing horse. Makes you wonder why it’s taken them 76 years to use it. It seems they were waiting for a challenge and to goad the naysayers. Is the Purosangue a real Ferrari?
Well, contrary to our initial concerns, it certainly looks like one. It’s a cohesive design; a high-riding and roomy GT that’s just the right parts aggressive and elegant; well proportioned; innovative in its aero without being nerdy; and, crucially, masking its girth so that it looks lissom and genuinely athletic. There are familial nods to other cars in the current Maranello model line-up: the SF90 at the front, the 296 at the rear,

maybe a bit of 812 and Roma in the middle, references to the Daytona of the late 1960s and early ‘70s, and an overall Berlinetta shape. This was one of the most high-wire automotive briefs of the last half-century, and Ferrari have nailed it.
It is a supercar with added practicality, not a steroid-injected luxe load-lugger. You really fnd this behind the wheel. The normally aspirated 6.5-litre V12 is a fnal hurrah for the company’s last un-boosted gloriously cacophonous leviathan. Mounted midfront for perfect weight distribution, it absolutely roars with 715 bhp arriving at 7,750 rpm and 80% of its Kratosian torque available from just 2,100. Other road users are swatted away like fies with even the smallest gap in which to overtake. Zero to 60 mph takes under 3.3s and the top speed lies beyond 193 mph. The smoothness and precision of its handling – aided by active suspension and rear-wheel-steer - blows anything else of this shape into the weeds.
Your $400,000 (you’re sitting down while reading this, right?) also buys you rearhinged rear doors like on a Rolls-Royce, four bucket seats with massage function (another Ferrari frst), and enough luggage space for several sets of skis and golf bags.
Even if you took the prancing horse badges of, we’ll say this: It looks like a Ferrari, sounds like a Ferrari, and goes like a Ferrari. The Purosangue is the real deal and is surely the most desirable car in the world.

As McLaren marks its 60th anniversary, the supercar maker has teamed up with the LEGO Group to release the frst-ever double pack of LEGO Speed Champions featuring two of McLaren's most iconic supercars: the McLaren F1 LM and McLaren Solus GT. In celebration of McLaren’s 60th milestone and the launch of the frst double-pack together, designers from both LEGO and McLaren recently came together at LEGO’s HQ in Billund, Denmark to celebrate the brands’ long-standing partnership.

Detroit’s latest three-ton $100,000 SUV is surely the most presidential mode of transport, short of acquiring the keys to The Beast or Air Force One. American through-andthrough, and with a blue-collar badge, the GMC Yukon Denali Ultimate makes the Cadillac Escalade look prissy. If it were an actual president, it’d be Theodore Roosevelt, who was an amateur boxer and wrestler.
While its materials, ride, and 6.2-liter 420 bhp V8 drivetrain will do little to worry its more eficient European rivals, such as the Range Rover, Mercedes GLS or Audi SQ7, it makes up for it in size and intimidation. Zoom up to someone’s fender and they will get out of your way. Likewise, you can cruise straight into restricted and sealed-of areas as guards will assume you’re the Feds. And it’s not all brawn and no brain, because it comes with the latest state-of-the-art semi-self-driving technology; so long as you’re looking where the car is going, you can take your hands of the wheel and spend as long as you like fumbling for the phone/potato chips/Glock you dropped down the side of the seat. The car will take care of overtaking, braking, accelerating, indicating and lane changes on more than 200,000 miles of compatible US and Canadian highways, with more coming online all the time.
‘Vader Chrome’ – a dark-tinted chrome trim – makes everything look extra menacing. And four extra Bose speakers over the standard Denali’s 14 are mounted in the front-row headrests, so you can cue up your own banging entrance music; on which note, each of the three rows of seats can accommodate heavyweight champs and NBA stars. The interior is trimmed in umber-colored full-grain leather, open-pore wood, and fourishes of aluminum. It’s business-like, as opposed to trendsetting.
Despite its 210in length, it’s surprisingly maneuverable and comes into its own of-road, where it’ll leave a rooster tail of dust en route to its top-secret desert or mountain destination. On tarmac, it’s genuinely quick with 60 mph arriving in six seconds. Bullet-proof glass, bomb-resistant chassis and a transfusion bag of the chief executive’s blood are all optional extras.

PAUL NEWMAN ROLEX WATCHES HEAD TO AUCTION
WORDS BY SEAN CHAFFIN
Who could forget Paul Newman’s Fast Eddie character from Te Hustler and Te Color of Money, the latter performance earning the actor an Oscar. Other signature performances included playing Butch Cassidy in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and as the smooth swindler Henry Gondorf in Te Sting. When not exuding machismo on screen Newman also hit the track as racecar driver, competing in events like 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Baja 1000 and more.
Newman also served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and led a life many would only dream of before his passing in 2008 at age 83. In June, fans of the actor received an opportunity to own one of his own vintage timepieces as part of a series of auctions from the collection of Newman and his wife Joanne Woodward. Te lot includes more than 300 items the legendary actors’ enjoyed throughout their 50-year marriage.
ROLEX - 6520 'ZENITH' DAYTONA ISSUE 2 – 31
34 – ISSUE 2
Two of the frst items set for the auction block were two of Newman’s Rolex Daytona watches from the storied collection. A “Paul Newman Daytona” is a sports-style watch that’s highly coveted by Rolex collectors, with a distinct dial and other features separating it from the traditional version. An actual Paul Newman variety worn by the Hollywood icon himself is even rarer with only two other examples previously sold at auction. Te two Sotheby’s examples come with even more historical and sentimental value, representing key moments in Newman’s racing career.
One of the Rolexes was presented to Newman afer winning the GTS-1 class at the 24 Hours of Daytona Race in 1995. At age 70, he became the oldest driver to accomplish the feat. Afer the victory, the driver noted: “I feel tremendous, it’s a real kick in the rear, as my wife would say … I don’t think there is anything better than this.” Upon winning the race, Newman was named Rolex Motorsports Man of the Year and was presented with the “Zenith” Daytona, bearing the inscription “Rolex at Daytona 24 Paul Newman Rolex Motorsports Man of the Year 1995.” Te watch marks one of the proudest moments of his motorsports career.
Known for his philanthropic work, Newman auctioned of the one-of-a-kind watch in 1999 for $39,000 to his charity, Te Hole in the Wall Gang. Te organization provides medically supervised summer camps and programs free to children with serious illnesses. Despite the record sale, Newman wore the watch again years later and it’s believed an acquaintance purchased the watch back for him because of the nostalgia and memories intertwined with the timepiece.
36 – ISSUE 2
Te second Daytona was the last watch ever gifed to Newman by Woodward and is inscribed “Drive Very Slowly, Joanne.” Te white gold automatic chronograph piece features a black dial, and was the only precious metal Daytona Newman ever owned and one of only three Daytonas gifed from Woodward. Te Sotheby’s auction marked the frst time the watch was ofered on the market.
Te Rolex Daytona was ofcially launched in 1963 and has close ties to the world of motorsports. Te timepieces quickly became a favorite among the racing community – including Newman. He acquired his frst Daytona during the flming of Winning (1969), which ignited a lifelong passion for auto racing and became an unofcial part of his racing uniform. Both the Sotheby’s pieces were expected between $500,000 and $1 million.
“Newman cemented his legacy with watch collectors through his infuence on Rolex's most sought-afer model, the Daytona,” Sotheby’s head of sale for watches Leigh Safar says. “As Rolex celebrates 60 years of the Daytona this year, we are proud to share in that milestone and present two models worn and owned by the Hollywood legend, which narrates the everlasting love he shared with his wife, Joanne, and his deep passion for racing. We are grateful to the Woodward Newman family for choosing Sotheby’s to present their parent’s collection to the world, with these watches standing as one of the most coveted and highly prized in the world.”
From watching his Newman-Haas team race at the Indy 500 to his iconic Barbara Walters interview in 2007, Newman's Daytona from his beloved wife was along for the ride during some of the most important moments of his fnal years. Tat included adorning his wrist as during his famous fnal laps at Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, Connecticut, on Aug. 13, 2008. Te track was closed to the public for Newman and Woodward’s loved ones as they watched the Hollywood star take one last turn behind the wheel. Newman sped past them in his 700 horsepower GT1 Corvette before passing away just over a month later.

The Nobu Rare 2008 Reserve by QUI Tequila is a limitedrelease collaboration by Chef Nobu Matsuhisa. The Nobu Rare is created with a blend of agave harvested in 2007 and 2008 and then aged in traditional American Whiskey Oak Barrels before maturing in steel tanks. The Nobu Rare 2008 Reserve by QUI Tequila is one of the frst tequila releases that focuses on the year the agave was harvested. QUI's primary focus is quality and creating a beautiful and innovative product. This expression pays homage to the agave plant itself by focusing on the year of harvest – similarly to how wine is diferentiated. As the crown jewel of the awardwinning QUI Tequila line, the Nobu Rare 2008 Reserve delivers beautiful aromas of wood, tobacco, caramel, and vanilla, with a full and rich palate. Flavors of sweet oak, toasted almond, and a hint of maple, validated by the palette of Chef Nobu himself, give the Nobu Rare a long, buttery fnish. These favors are all natural to the aging product making Nobu Rare one of the few aged tequilas that is additive-free. This extra añejo's stunning golden honey hue is also perfectly complemented by a crystalline decanter decorated to provide a truly elegant and unmatched drinking experience.

AN INTIMATE CONVERSATION
BETWEEN ENTHUSIAST REPORT
PUBLISHER & FOUNDER
LINCOLN SALAZAR, AND LUIS COTA, OF TEQUILA COMISARIO.
INTERVIEW BY KARA ELLIS
LS: I'm here with Luis Cota, President and CEO of Tequila Comisario. We're going to be discussing today the story behind Tequila Comisario, as well as where Tequila Comisario is going. Luis, thank you so much for being here, I appreciate it.
LC: It's a pleasure to be with you today, Lincoln.
LS: Please tell how you guys got started, let's start from the beginning.
LC: Well - by coincidence, really. One of our partners, Rick Darnell, retired NBA player, was the host of the 2012 All-Star Game. At the afer party, there were two booths lef, and one was Hennessy, one was Tequila Comisario, and the Hennessy Booth was sort of empty. Nobody was there. And this little booth with the tequila was just jammed with people. So, Rick Darnell and Steve Reiss, my two partners, Rick says to Steve, “let's go take a look.” Steve says, “we don't drink. Why should we take a look at it? But, let's go see what it is all about.” Tey went to look at this booth. Tey saw this tequila. As it ended, they met the owner who had literally started the brand a couple of years back and had done an incredibly beautiful job
of developing a concept, a bottle, and a blend that was absolutely fabulous. Iin 2014, we ended up buying the brand from him. Since then, we've become the most awarded brand in the entire industry since its release. And Tequila Comisario, along with the industry overall, has been on this incredible roll. Tequila as an industry now is on track to be a $12 billion category. It's going to bypass every category and it's going to be biger than vodka. As a matter of fact, in two years time, we're going to pass vodka sales revenue wise, not volume wise. It will be the number one revenue producing category in the industry.
LS: I spoke with someone from the vodka category that was saying that tequila is the most competitive market right now, next to vodka, which has without a doubt always been the leader. But now tequila is one of their bigest competitors as a whole category.
LC: People don't think about it, but, usually either you're a brown spirit - you're a scotch, bourbon, or whiskey, or you're a white spirit - a gin, or vodka. Tequila competes in both segments. We have two age expressions, Reposado and Anejo. We have a Blanco that is becoming a darling of the mixology world. People love the spiciness, the pepperiness of our Blanco. And people can be so creative, these young bartenders, with what they can do with our Blanco for cocktails is truly impressive.
LS: Tell me some of the awards that you guys have won over the years because I've seen a lot of your accolades and it seems to be one of the most sought afer tequilas in the world.
LC: As you well know, we've gotten a plethora of golds and double golds in 98 point ratings over the last couple of years. We've now got a total of 14 double golds. A double gold means that every single judge in that competition unanimously chose that particular brand as the best of the competition. And we've got 14 of those, which is unheard of. Nobody's ever done that before. So, we've been very blessed to be able to have that kind of execution and that kind of quality. As a matter of fact, twice in one competition we've won double gold with all three expressions. So, that's an incredible achievement. We've been very, very blessed with that. But that speaks to the quality of Tequila Comisario.
LS: Can you tell me about some of the incredible growth that I know you guys have been experiencing over the past year specifcally?
ISSUE 2 – 45
LC: We have had incredible growth. We've been blessed, you know, as a small batch, artisanal, handcrafed brand. We were trying to focus on premier restaurants, bars, hotels at the onset to get a lot of trial from the consumer as Covid hit like everyone else We did a rotation to retail and we've been very blessed to be there.
LS: We were talking earlier about Las Vegas. Las Vegas is, from my understanding, one of the hardest markets to get into being one of the most competitive.
LC: Well, certainly, when you look at the distributor environment in Las Vegas, it's very, very much controlled by a couple of big distributors. So for a new brand to break in, it is very, very difcult. We met directly with MGM here about two years ago, actually at the beginning of Covid. And they liked it so much that they approved it for all their units and then Covid hit. So we're probably now in maybe 70 or 80 of their restaurants and bars and hotels and making progress. You go to Te Bellagio, you'll fnd it all over the place. Te Cosmopolitan is growing nicely with it as well. So, we're making a lot of progress with MGM. Tey've got a unique system.
LS: How many states are you guys currently distributed in?
LC: Right now we're in about 45 states. We've got about 50 distributors, and we've been very blessed to be able to be with a lot of small distributors, sort of middle tier.
LS: What do you think separates Tequila Comisario from the other tequila brands that are currently on the market today?
LC: Tis is an interesting question. Celebrity brands are a wonderful thing because they sell of of the shelf because of the celebrity that they are associated with, so those brands get tons of initial sales. I'm not so sure about the repeat sales for some of those brands, and they may not get a lot of repeat sales, but in our case, once somebody tastes Tequila Comisario, they are in love with it. We make a product that is really well made, really well balanced, and that competes globally with the best scotches, Bourbons or whiskeys.
LS: We were talking earlier, and you mentioned Tequila Comisario being not small batch, not boutique, but instead that you wanted to keep the integrity of the product, is that correct?
LC: Very much so. I think of Tequila Comisario as a tequila based on a fne wine program. Everything about what we do is incredible. Te fruit sauce, for example, we're still averaging seven years of age of the agave we harvest. When we take the distillate, we put it into a large tank, and we oxygenate it for 36 hours, and that oxygenation takes every drop and breaks it into a thousand molecules. And when it gets reconstituted, it's got this slightly creamier, sofer, more sofer favor. But, it doesn't dilute the nature of agave, pepper, spice, and earthy favors. So, the result is a combination of a fruit sauce with a beautiful mouthfeel. And then we age purposely in 2 to 3 year old barrels. So what you end up with is this beautifully well balanced tequila which has a touch of the creme nougat vanilla honey you want from the barrel, and it's beautifully, well balanced. It's got a great mouthfeel, and I think that creates a tremendous amount of repeat loyal consumers.
LS: Out of the Blanco, the Anejo, and the Reposado, how do you recommend people drink each?
LC: I tell people to drink their spirits the way they like it. I think a lot of people are purists. I'm one of those. I like mine on the rocks. I think our Anejo neat is an incredible experience. As a matter of fact, when I do tastings, I start with the Anejo frst. It's got such a beautiful, well balanced, sofer, creamier favor without losing the barrel and the agave. So I started with Anejo because it's got beautiful sense of balance. Ten, I go to Reposado because all of our fruit is highlands Agave, which tends to grow in a very porous clay soil. So, you get this agave that is sort of a foral forward fruit. And so our Reposado, which is my favorite, by the way, it's really, really well made. And even though the Blanco hasn't lost its pepperiness, it's got a beautiful mouthfeel to it as well. Highlands Juice has a lot to do with the kind of quality we are.
LS: What do you recommend? What kind of cocktail would you make with the Blanco if you were to mix it?
LC: If I were to mix one, I would choose a Lemon Drop. Forget the gin, forget the vodka. Do it with tequila because you've got all this citric acid in a lemon drop and when you add the peppery, earthy spiciness of agave, it's a perfect match. It's a beautiful drink.
46 – ISSUE 2
LS: You guys also have a very special Extra Anejo, right?
LC: Our Extra Anejo, not only was it eight years old when it was harvested, but it was aged for eight more years in the barrel, so the project had 16 years in it before we released it. And so it's been a really beautiful achievement. We only released 1000 bottles in December, sold out in 90 days, and at a $1,000 retail, you think, wow. When we did it last year, you know it's going to be too high of a price today. Te quality of our extra anejo is incredible. As a matter of fact, we're going to release 2000 more bottles probably afer the frst of the year. We may have a few more before that, but we're targeting for the frst of the year 2000 more bottles. Tat will be a unique package, full crystal hand polished. It's going to be a gorgeous package that'll be in that segment.
LS: And how will people be able to get that bottle when it comes out?
LC: Certainly I think it's going to be very highly allocated, but it'll certainly be available on our website of course, and select retailers.
ISSUE 2 – 47
LS: What do you think we should expect in the next 3 to 5 years from Tequila Comisario?
LC: One of the things that I'm working on is to do a whole program on Extra Anejos. We bought $2 million worth of aged stocks from a distillery that chose to get out of the branded business. So, we're going to take all of it and we're going to let them age a little bit longer. We'll be developing a whole new package. Our logo is going to change slightly to become TC very stylized, very simple, very elegant, refecting Tequila Comisario and or the collection of Tequila Comisario as well. Tere'll be a selection of Extra Anejos at fve, ten, ffeen year olds. A beautiful, simple, elegant Burgundian style label.
LS: How long does it need to be aged to be considered extra anejo? What’s the minimum years it can age?
LC: By law in Mexico, you have to have at least 36 months of aging in the barrel to be Extra Anejo. You can have a lot more, but as you know, the more you age something, the more the barrel overtakes the fruit sauce. So, the critical trick is how do you age something for 8 or 10 years and still maintain a sense of what the earthiness, pepperiness and the spiciness of agave is all about. So far we've done that.
LS: So, my last question is this - why should I buy Tequila Comisario?
LC: If you want the ultimate taste experience of what a true tequila should be like in a very elegant, well balanced way, try Tequila Comisario. It's got a great mouthfeel bar none. I mean, yeah, we've got a pretty package and got lots of awards, but the ultimate experience is in your mouth. Tat's why you should buy it. Tequila is by far and away the fastest growing spirits category. And within it, the ultra premium category of tequila is by far and away producing the most proft. We are in the heart of the ultra premium category, and the most awarded brand in that ultra premium category. Salud!

Celebrate 10 Years of George Clooney & Rande Gerber
Casamigos
A conversation between Lincoln Salazar & Rande Gerber
You, George, and Mike recently launched your new Cristalino Reposado. Tis is unique as Cristalino is normally made in Añejo or Extra Añejo. What made you decide to go with Casamigos Reposado?
Casamigos Cristalino is made with 100% Blue Weber agave Casamigos Reposado Tequila. Most cristalinos are anejo-based, ours is reposado-based. It’s simple - we chose to use our reposado for the taste. People that have enjoyed other types of spirits have turned to Casamigos because of its quality. I see the same happening for Casamigos Cristalino. George, Mike and I made Casamigos out of our desire to drink the best-tasting, smoothest tequila. Te same applies to our Casamigos Cristalino.
What made your team decide to add a Cristalino to your family of brands?
George and I are passionate about Casamigos and everything we do. Just as we made our tequila and mezcal, we wanted to create a cristalino that we wanted to drink. Tere’s a growing population curious about Cristalino in the States. We have been working on this for a while and we’re really excited about the launch and for people to fnally get the chance to drink it.
How long did it take to come up with the fnal recipe? We heard you and George had over 700 samples to come to the fnal decision. Is this true?
We have been talking about launching a Cristalino for some time but wanted to make sure that what we were creating was the best. We are involved in every aspect of the brand and business, so it took many samples for us to create the perfect tequila. We wanted to create something great that we were proud of, that we feel is the best and diferent than others.
How does your Casamigos Cristalino Reposado compare to your regular reposado? What is the diference?
Cristalinos are complex and subtle. Te process is very unique. With our Casamigos Cristalino, we have a tequila that has the complexity and character of our reposado with the clear, crisp, bright notes of our blanco.
How do you recommend drinking Casamigos Cristalino? Neat? On the rocks? Mixed?
It’s no secret we enjoy our Casamigos neat or on the rocks. Cristalino is no diferent. But simple cocktails also work well with the Cristalino. A nice Casamigos Cristalino martini – not too many ingredients. Keep it simple to preserve the integrity of the Cristalino.

"You can’t have a product that’s only a little bit better than others, because then people will go back to what they know. Tat’s why you have to create a product that’s much better than others, that really stands out. Tat’s the true secret to success."
56 – ISSUE 2
Rande: So, 10 years of Casamigos now being the fastest-growing, most soughtafer tequila brand ever. How excited are you? Is it everything you imagined, or did it exceed your expectations? Did you expect it to grow this quickly?
Success isn’t always defned by proft. I believe the success that we’ve created for Casamigos has been changing the perception of tequila. When we created it, we wanted something that was very diferent from every other tequila, something with no burn. Te perfect tasting, smoothest tequila that we made for us to drink and share with friends.
Te fact is that if you don’t have a good product, it’s not going to work. Some brands attempt to fool the customer with big marketing campaigns, made up stories and fancy bottles. For Casamigos, it has always been about what’s inside the bottle.
What are your thoughts on the tequila category’s recent booming success?
We launched Casamigos back in 2013. It was not a celebrity tequila. My friend George just happened to be an actor but it was born out of our desire to drink the best tasting, smoothest tequila with our friends. I’m proud that we helped grow the tequila category to what it is today, and I wish everyone a lot of luck. Many will learn that it takes time, dedication, and authenticity and most of all a great product such as Casamigos to succeed.
» ISSUE 2 – 57
How has your friendship with George and Mike grown throughout these ten years of Casamigos? Has the business made your friendship stronger being partners in business?
We were friends frst and business partners 2nd. We all contribute in our own ways and I feel we are the perfect trifecta. I couldn’t ask for 2 better friends and partners.
What is the secret to Casamigos’ success?
We really haven’t changed our philosophy, number one it’s about the product. We have a great tequila and people understand the diferences in that. And when you start with that, your job is to get people to try it. I was confdent, once they tried it, they would switch from whatever other brand they may have been drinking in the past. So many people are drinking Casamigos, more and more every day and they spread the word. A lot of those customers who were drinking vodka, whiskey, gin and other liquors are now drinking Casamigos. You can’t have a product that’s only a little bit better than others, because then people will go back to what they know. Tat’s why you have to create a product that’s much better than others, that really stands out. Tat’s the true secret to success.
What personal legacy would you like to leave behind with Casamigos?
I hope my legacy isn’t about Casamigos but rather as a good father, husband and friend.

CASA DE CAMPO RESORT & VILLAS SHOULD BE YOUR NEXT SEASIDE ESCAPE
WORDS BY SEAN CHAFFIN
Enthusiasts of the good life have plenty to look forward to with a trip to Casa de Campo Resort & Villas, located on the southeastern coast of the Dominican Republic. Bask in white sands and crystal blue Caribbean waters for some real relaxation. Tee of on one of four championship golf courses Or maybe grab a racket and head to the tennis court to perfect that serve. Visit the shooting center to take down some skeet or head to the marina to book a sport fshing excursion. Afer working up an appetite, take a seat at a seaside restaurant for a perfect gourmet meal.
Tere’s just something for everyone in this exquisite resort located in the city of La Romana. Te tropical paradise opened in 1974 as the frst resort in the Dominican Republic and sits on 7,000 acres. Te property, celebrating its 50th anniversary next year, has become a favorite for luxury travelers and celebrities seeking a truly stunning getaway in a safe and exclusive setting. Beyond
simply ofering vacation villas, private residents are also available at Casa de Campo (Spanish for “country house”) for those looking to soak up the good vibes in this private gated community even more. Grab that driver or perhaps a lounge chair – some Dominican dreaming is on the menu.
GOLFING, GAMES, AND MORE
Luxury adventure and activity await visitors heading to the sundrenched grounds of Casa de Campo. Regularly recognized as one of the top golf resorts in the world, players of any level can take their pick of three Pete Dye-designed golf courses. Tat includes Teeth of the Dog, the top-ranked course in the Caribbean that winds along ruged rock and coral of the Dominican coastline. Gaze at the brilliant natural landscapes and historical backdrops while trying to keep your ball in play.
Te Dye Fore and Links courses also make for one-of-a-kind rounds with stunning views and challenging holes all around. Tose looking to work on their swings can also take advantage of on-site golf instructors or book some time with the TrackMan Simulator.
Tose who enjoy swinging a racket won’t be disappointed either. Casa de Campo features the largest tennis complex in the Caribbean, with 13 courts available in lush tropical surroundings, and 2 padel courts. Te complex features 25 pros and junior professionals on staf to help with that serve or other skills. Tose who prefer shooting sports can grab a shotgun at the 245-acre Shooting Centre, with over 200 stations for trap, skeet, sporting clays, and pigeon rings. Guests looking to reel in a big one can also head to the on-site marina to book a sport fshing charter. For some underwater exploration, plan some snorkeling as well. Te equestrian center also allows guests to horseback ride and even take part in some polo. Te stables are a great option for those who also purchase properties and want to stable their horses.
“Homeowners here can have their own horse boarded here fve minutes from your house,” says Jason Kycek, senior vice president of sales and marketing. “You can go ride your horse, but we also ofer guests the ability to go horseback riding and ponies for kids.”
If these sports opportunities weren’t enough, the resort also hosts a Real Madrid Foundation Soccer School. Te venue includes a FIFA-sized football feld with high-quality turf and allows young players to train with professionals from one of the best-known clubs in the world.
COOLING DOWN IN THE CARIBBEAN
While Casa de Campo is a golfer’s paradise, there is much more to the resort than teeing up and working on that short game. Guests will fnd eight top-notch restaurants including the inviting Minitas Beach Club, with perfect views of the Caribbean and one of the property’s three exclusive, pristine sand beaches.
“Golf is what put us on the map at frst, but over the years the resort’s just become a very special, unique place,” Kycek says. “I've never seen anything like it. I always tell people you just have to come and see it because it's hard to explain it or give you a sense of what it's like, but it's a neat place. Te thing people like about Casa de Campo are all the other activities that are here in addition to the great golf.”
Afer a day on the links or simply for some relaxation, plunge in the crystal waters at Casa de Campo’s private beaches. Minitas Beach highlights the experience with turquoise water and plenty of lounge chairs. Hop in a kayak or paddle boat for some added fun. Catalina and Saona Islands are also just a short trip away for even more pristine secluded beaches or for living out that inner Indiana Jones for some jungle exploration.
Numerous other excursions are available including cave tours and trips to the Dominican capital of Santo Domingo. Any tobacco enthusiast will surely want to book a tour of the La Flor Dominicana factory. Take in the fne art of cigar making, passed down through generations on the island. Afer seeing some cigar rolling, surely some cigar smoking is on tap to close out the amazing experience.
If all that weren’t enough, the Altos de Chavón ofers something completely diferent. Te resort created a complete 16th Century Mediterranean village right in the heart of the resort. Te entire venue was handcrafed by local artisans and serves as a cultural center for residents, tourists, and working artists from around the world – from potters to weavers to painters and more. Stroll the cobblestone streets, checking out shops, boutiques, galleries, restaurants, an archaeological museum, St. Stanislaus Church, and brilliant views of the Chavón River and Caribbean. Tere’s even a 5,000-seat amphitheater that regularly hosts noted artists, such as a recent performance by Rod Stewart.
Frank Sinatra was the frst performer to actually take the stage when the amphitheater debuted. Looking for that perfect home, condo, or apartment? Living right in the village is also possible.
“It's what I call the cherry on top of this entire place,” Kycek says of the village. “It's a special place. I haven’t seen anything quite like it anywhere and I don't know if there is.”
Tat last statement might go for the entire Casa de Campo property.
BIG ADDITIONS AND MAKING THE TRIP
While Casa de Campo is a AAA Four Diamond, fve-star luxury resort, that doesn’t mean a trip isn’t out of the question for even those with more modest budgets. Summer savings deals start at $399 per night with all-inclusive options also available. On the other end of the spectrum, some ultra-luxury villas feature a $25,000 price tag along with private maids, butlers, pools, and jacuzzis. Te property also hosts an airport for the jet-set crowd as well.
Some visitors enjoy the massive resort so much that a Casa de Campo property seems like a nice option. For those considering a trip – or even adding a Casa de Campo home of their own – Kycek notes that the property has a wide range of options. Te property is constantly getting upgraded as well, he adds, and that includes some major new additions.
Management recently debuted new Premier Suites and Premier Club, ofering another level of travel that includes every luxury imaginable, such as extremely spacious rooms, private check-in service, private terrace or balcony, full-size premium wet-bar, exclusive bar and lounge areas with complimentary premium beverages, and much more.
Another big addition was the debut of the new Spa health and wellness center featuring 13 treatment rooms. Schedule a massage, facial, detox session, physical therapy, salon styling, and so much more in this 18,000-square foot oasis. You can also keep that workout on schedule in the health and ftness center.
Te Spanish phrase “Mi casa es su casa” (My house is your house.) is certainly appropriate at this Caribbean gem of a resort. Tere’s so much to ofer in one magnifcent setting that visitors are immersed in a unique world that may have them already planning that next chance to get back.
“Casa de Campo has so many things to ofer within one place,” Kycek adds. “It’s like you don't have to leave the property.”
And that sounds perfect.

Picture this: an exhilarating journey nestled in the grandeur of Europe's wilderness. It is a road trip that incites your inner explorer, energizes your senses, and masterfully merges the intoxicating thrill of adventure with the tranquility
of untouched, mountainous beauty. It is not a crosscountry odyssey but rather a condensed, vibrant dash through Romania's spectacular Carpathian Mountains. An experience that is as profound as it is extraordinary.
Over the next 12 minutes or so, we are taking you on a spellbinding journey along the winding Transfăgărășan Road, through tranquil retreats with unique accommodations beside the mirror-like surface of Balea Lake, and up to the mountain's peak brimming with a myriad of stimulating activities - all seamlessly intertwined in an engaging narrative that is as exhilarating as the adventure itself.
The Drive of a Lifetime: Navigating the Transfăgărășan Road
Straight from the heart of Romania rises an enchanting serpent of asphalt. Named afer the Transylvania and Făgărășan regions it traverses, this engineering marvel was conceived by former communist leader Nicolae Ceaușescu during the 1970s as a strategic military route. With its twisting layout weaving through the ruged Carpathian Mountains, it stretches a stagering 90 kilometers, reaching an audacious altitude of over 2,000 meters at Bâlea Lake. Tis road transcends ordinary travel routes, gaining recognition from the likes of Jeremy Clarkson of "Top Gear" fame, who lauded it as "the best road in the world." A journey here is not merely about reaching a destination - it is a sublime dance between man, machine, and the untamed beauty of nature.
THE JOURNEY'S PRELUDE
Romania's vibrant heartbeat echoes from its capital, Bucharest. It is here that the journey may begin, in a city where grand history mingles seamlessly with the pulse of modernity. From the imposing majesty of the Palace of the Parliament to the enchanting cobblestone whispers of old town Lipscani, Bucharest ofers an intriguing canvas of experiences. Embark on a culinary adventure through the city's diverse food scene, immerse yourself in the rhythm of its lively nightlife, and soak in the rich cultural tapestry, all while anticipation stirs for the upcoming Transfăgărășan experience.

Alternatively, the journey may start from Cluj Napoca, an energetic city ofen regarded as Transylvania's dynamic hub. Cluj resonates with a unique fusion of Gothic architectural prowess and vivacious street art, a testament to its vibrant spirit. It is a hotbed for the arts, with buzzing cafes and an infectious atmosphere that could serve as an invigorating counterpoint to the tranquil allure of the impending journey.
Te actual core of your adventure, however, lies in Sibiu, a city that transports you to an era untouched by time. Medieval towers stand as silent guardians over the city, whilst a network of cobbled streets laces through squares teeming with life. 'Eyes' blink from the attics of old houses, adding an enchanting layer to the city's character.
As the year wanes and winter drapes its white mantle over the city, Sibiu morphs into a festive wonderland. Te annual Christmas market, decked in twinkling lights and vibrant colors, emerges against the backdrop of the icy mantle. Te market is a hub of festive cheer, tantalizing the senses with the comforting aroma of mulled wine, spiced to perfection, and a culinary symphony of traditional Romanian dishes like sarmale and mici.
CHOOSING THE IDEAL VEHICLE
Te Transfăgărășan Road demands a worthy vehicle, and your choice will shape the character of your adventure.
For summer journeys, a sports car like the Aston Martin Vantage or the Porsche 911 Carrera ofers the thrill of a high-performance drive. Both provide impressive horsepower and superior handling for the road's serpentine curves. Rental companies like Premium Rent, Colcorsa, and Global Rent a Car in Bucharest, Cluj Napoca, and Sibiu can cater to these needs. Alternatively, consider a Volkswagen California camper van for a leisurely pace or larger groups. Tis home-on-wheels provides a balance of comfort and adventure, allowing you to embrace the rhythm of the road at your own pace. Companies such as Nomad Camper Hire or RV Rent Romania ofer these types of rentals, which come equipped with all the necessary amenities.
During the colder months, parts of the road are closed to trafc from November until June. During this period, the road is passable up to the Capra Cabin when coming from the south (Argeș) or the Bâlea Waterfall if you are coming from the north (Sibiu). From the latter, a cable car ofers the only access to the route's highest point, Bâlea Lake. Terefore, considering the winter conditions, an allwheel-drive SUV like the Range Rover Sport or Audi Q7 becomes your ideal companion. Tese vehicles blend luxury with of-road capabilities, enabling navigation through icy turns and potentially snow-covered passes. Reputable rental frms such as Autonom and EuroCars provide these winter-ready vehicles. It is essential to request snow chains and ensure your vehicle comes equipped with an emergency kit for safety.
THE ROUTE UNFOLDS: TRANSFĂGĂRĂȘAN’S PATH
Light's on, windows down, the adventure on the Transfăgărășan Road begins.
As you traverse this 90-kilometer marvel, each twist and turn ofers a fresh, breathtaking view of the ruged Carpathian landscape. Encased by verdant forests, there is a chance to spot a range of wildlife in their natural surroundings. Be on the lookout for donkeys and horses grazing calmly in the felds, nimble black goats darting over rocky outcrops, and if fortune is on your side, you may even catch a glimpse of a bear padding stealthily through the forest's understory.
Te journey from the North starts by crossing the pastoral landscapes of Sibiu County. Small traditional villages, interspersed with rolling green felds and charming homesteads, ofer a serene preamble to the exciting journey ahead. Te frst noteworthy encounter is the village of Avrig, snugled against the Carpathians' foothills. It captivates visitors with its stately Brukenthal Summer Palace and Gardens, a fne testament to the region's Austrian heritage from the 18th century. Te grand chateau is crowned with verdant grounds and ofers a delightful detour for those who wish to soak in its historic charm.
Progressing further, the village of Cârţişoara awaits, serving as the northern gateway to the Transfăgărășan Road. Tis quaint settlement embodies traditional Romanian village life, with homes adorned by colorful local crafs and charming locals ofering warm welcomes. Take a breather to explore Te Badea Cârțan Museum, honoring a local shepherd who became a national hero. From there, the ascent commences as the road begins its winding climb through the Fagaras Mountains' dense woods.
Soon, you encounter the thunderous roar of the Bâlea Waterfall cascading down the ruged mountainside. A comfortable cabin complete with cozy restaurants nestles at the waterfall's foot, ofering a delightful spot for a meal or even an overnight stay amidst the majestic natural spectacle. In the winter months, this point signifes the end of the road as snowfall renders the path ahead impassable. However, fear not, as a cable car service operates for adventurous souls up to the pinnacle of the route.
In the summer months, the road remains open and the voyage continues upwards. A symphony of turns and stunning vistas escorts you to Bâlea Lake, the road's zenith at an altitude surpassing 2000 meters. Tis glacial lake's sapphire waters are cradled amidst a breathtaking natural setting. Te scene is peppered with quaint wooden cabins and inviting diners, providing a haven for rest and refreshment. When winter asserts its presence, the famous Ice Hotel emerges - a distinct accommodation carved entirely from crystalline ice. Tis mountain-top retreat buzzes with myriad activities, inviting visitors to spend a few days in the enchanting beauty of their surroundings.

THE SUMMIT: BÂLEA LAKE
Onwards and upwards from Cârțișoara, the spectacular Bâlea Waterfall emerges as a signifcant landmark on the route. Tis natural spectacle serves as a defning mark on the journey, drawing a line between the voyage undertaken and the destination ahead. In the months from November to June, winter's snowy veil renders the road beyond this point inaccessible, thus setting the waterfall as the temporary fnale of the trail. However, transportation to the mountain's summit is still available via the daily cable car from 09:00 to 17:00.
FROM TUNNEL DEPTHS TO DAM HEIGHTS
Moving forward from such serene beauty, the Transfăgărășan continues through the Bâlea Tunnel - the longest road tunnel in Romania. Tis monumental engineering achievement stretches over 884 meters and is a testament to the road's historical signifcance, once a strategic military route. Once out of there, you are pretty much into Argeș County and onto a path that winds down towards the colossal Vidraru Dam. Tis immense structure stands proud as a sign of human ingenuity in shaping the landscape, holding back the peaceful waters of Vidraru Lake and adding yet another breathtaking sight to the journey.
HISTORY'S ECHOES TO JOURNEY'S END
Next on this scenic journey is the historical Poenari Fortress. Tough partially in ruins, this imposing relic from the reign of Vlad the Impaler echoes tales of a bygone era. Gaze upon the fortress from its base and imagine the challenging ascent of its 1,480 steps. Te panorama from the top beautifully showcases both the magnifcence and the challenges of the course just traversed.
On the fnal stretch of the road, the picturesque towns of Corbeni and Arefu ofer tranquil respites amidst the journey's excitement. Once Upon A Vine
Harlan Estate has been endowed cult status for its high demand, limited availability, and exceptional viticulture.
by Heather McCabe
Expressing a sense of place through taste has perhaps never been more successfully or poetically achieved than by Harlan Estate. Some afcionados endow cult status to this California winemaker. Its high demand, limited availability, and exceptional viticulture command four-fgure prices per bottle, to start. Identity is at the heart of this remarkable family-run vineyard, which has a robust, long-standing relationship with Nobu Hotels.
And what is that exceptional quality that makes wine from this estate so idolized? A rare and valuable element of the forest. “There’s a mindset that we should make wine that is more and more transparent of the place,” says Francois Vignaud, Harlan Estate Wine Director. In that sense, the forest is an essential part of the character. Without the trees and the fog playing fundamental roles, this estate’s extraordinary wine might simply be ordinary. “We know that from the early vintages of Harlan Estate until today, there’s a common thread in the identity of our wines, and it’s that forest element. Whether it’s with older vintages, of the forest foor, the mushroom type of aromas…or it’s the fresh aromatic herbs that you would fnd in more recent vintages. But there is a common thread of that forest infuence in the wine.”
The visionary was William (Bill) Harlan. A California native, he spent years following his many passions and living frmly in the moment. After growing up in a modest environment, he won a scholarship to attend Berkeley in the late 1950s. As a student, he discovered a region about 45 minutes north where they make wine, and you could go and taste it for free, and, even better, they wouldn’t check your ID. He fell in love with the region and decided to make a documentary about it. “It is at this point that the romantic idea of one day having a vineyard started. Having a vineyard, and perhaps raising his family there,” explains Vignaud.

Other than being an avid gardener growing up, Bill didn’t have knowledge of the wine industry. But as someone who was endlessly eager and curious, that wasn’t going to stop him. As a few examples: He raced motorcycles, he few planes and started a fying school; he hitchhiked the entire length of Africa; in the ’60s he was a pro poker player for three years. Throughout his young life of impetuousness and adventure, he retained the idea of one day having a wine-growing property. After the oil crash of ’73, with a couple of college friends, he built a real-estate company, Pacifc Union, through which he eventually was able to capture the right piece of land.
“There is a pivotal moment in Bill Harlan’s life that helped crystalize the vision behind Harlan Estate, and it’s a trip that he took to France in 1980, in Bordeaux and Burgundy,” says Vignaud. “This trip really changed everything, because there, Bill discovered two major elements of inspiration for him. One, the fact that there are these great families who have taken care of their properties and passed it along for generations. For someone who lived in the moment, there was something incredibly inspiring, to have the ability of building something that will go way beyond your lifetime and possibly past other generations. And that’s where the idea of creating this family wine-growing estate grew. It ultimately led to building a 200-year plan, which is the idea that the property and the land can be passed along for generations. The second biggest learning and inspiration came from Burgundy, which is: the essence of location. If you want to produce a fne wine, location is absolutely everything.”
Returning to the Napa Valley in 1980, Harlan realized, by observing where most vineyards were planted, that no one was really going up in the hillsides and planting above the bench lands. It was a very important observation that motivated him to start looking for land on the hillsides, specifcally in the western hills with east-facing slopes. This would allow the gentle morning sun to ripen the grapes, and by the time the hot afternoon sun came around, the vines would be shaded. “So you retain acidity in the fruit, freshness in the wine, and potential aging capacity for your wines,” Vignaud says.
Strategy was oficially in action. He had seen that historically there was some great Cabernet produced on the bench lands between Yountville, Oakville, and Rutherford. And after four years of research and negotiations, in 1984 he purchased the frst piece of forest on the hill to start Harlan Estate.
114 – ISSUE 2
It was, truly, a forest. “There were no vineyards, no infrastructure,” Vignaud says. “No roads, no electricity. It took a little bit of time to fgure out exactly where to clear some of the forest and start planting the frst vines. It ultimately led to, today, having 40 acres of vines planted on a 240-acre property.”
It is still largely forested, which is fundamental to the elite character of Harlan Estate wines. According to Vignaud, two unique aspects set Harlan Estate apart. One is, of course, its location, in the Western hillsides of the Oakville appellation. The other is how much forest surrounds and composes the property, and the degree to which that forest infuences the overall environment, and ultimately the identity — the organoleptic character — of the wine itself.
“Over time, we’ve understood how much of the forest is impactful to the identity of our property,” Vignaud says. “The forest amplifes the efect of shading the vineyard. By nature, it brings a taller canopy and provides further shade. It’s a microclimate regulator: Every morning, you have the fog rolling into the Napa Valley from the San Pablo Bay, just south of Napa, and it tends to cover our vineyards in the morning. The trees play their role in capturing the moisture from the fog, and really conducting it into the ground, but also holding onto the fog for a little while longer. So we have the capacity of beneftting longer from that moisture provided by the fog, simply because the trees keep it.”
ISSUE 2 – 115
A vital element of its success is the abundance of life on the property. That creates a “virtuous circle of natural balance” of interaction among the forest, the vineyards, and the wildlife. “The species that grow on the property naturally infuence what ultimately will fall on the ground, what will nourish the ground, and what will be pulled from the vines into the fruit and its character,” says Vignaud. “And there’s a lot of underbrush species that grow naturally, lots of aromatic plants — we’re talking about bay leaf, sage, rosemary — that grow naturally all around the property. Those tend to have that aromatic impact, ultimately, in the wine. So there’s that element of forest foor, in a sense, that you fnd as a thread of identity in the wine year after year.”
Cory Empting, Director of Wine Growing, who oversees viticulture and winemaking, and who is part of the estate’s second generation, refers to the work they do in the vineyard as “farming from bedrock to treetop.” This takes into consideration the entire environment, from the vines themselves to how much of the forest is part of the property’s overall footprint. Speaking of the second generation, Bill’s children, Will and Amanda, took over for their parents about two years ago. “There is this continuity of generations, and not just of the family, but also of the team that works with the land directly,” says Vignaud.
Self-suficiency is increasingly a focus, especially with a view to the estate’s 200-year plan. For example, last year, 2022, is the frst year that the entire property received no irrigation at all as they transition to dry farming. This helps the vines to be more self-suficient in their own environment in the long run. “The vines have an incredible resilience, a capacity to even better express a sense of place through a little bit of that stress and struggle,” Vignaud says. “It’s been a very important aspect of our farming practices, to have a vineyard that is as self-suficient as possible. But it goes way beyond that. It’s really having a vineyard and a team that is in tune with the environment and really positively interacting with the environment. So as many natural practices as we can have, we have implemented them and will continue to implement them.
“We see what we do as a constant dialogue between the natural environment and our team working with it. The wines are a refection of this relationship between the land and our team,” Vignaud asserts. “We try to express a sense of place through wine. Because we know that between our land and our team, nobody else has it. For me, tasting Harlan Estate is being able to be transported to this very place, this corner of land we have in the western hills of Oakville, surrounded by this diverse forest and these hillsides. It’s really diving into the place and, of course, the time, the growing season, the mood that the property experiences.”
