Letter from the Editor

DEAR READERS W

e can’t tell you the number of readers who have registered their regrets with us at the magazine’s disappearance and their emotional requests that we return to print. It has been completely heart-warming to hear the tone of disappointment in the question “Where have you been?” Considering how much we were missed, it is with great simcha that we are appearing once again. As we prepare for Tishrei and the opportunities for renewal that it brings, THE ENGLISH UPDATE is also being renewed in this issue that is arriving in time for the Yamim Noraim. Dear Readers, in the months that have passed since the last time I wrote to you, the world out there hasn’t gotten any more sane, peace loving, and truthful. On the contrary, the actions of radical Islamic groups are even more shocking. While the true injustices, human rights violations, and genocidal actions go largely unnoticed, the Israel bashing and anti-Semitic rants are more brazen than ever. A Jew living in Eretz Yisrael feels that he or she is living on an island of sanity in a world that is spinning out of control. As we approach Rosh Hashanah, Aseres Yemei Tshuva, Yom Kippur, and Sukkos, we are gearing up both physically and spiritually. This whirl of activity, both on the outside and the inside, anchors us in the Jewish cycle of growth where each subsequent Tishrei is never the same as the one before it.

Now, more than ever, we appreciate our opportunities to come closer to our Creator in tefillah and share with Him parts of ourselves that we never shared before. We can relish these days when it seems that the whole Jewish world is asking in one voice and with one heart that we have a good, sweet year where we may be privileged to raise ourselves and our children to meaningful, holy lives. As the world out there seems to be getting crazier by the day, we can appreciate even more the gifts that Hashem has given to us as Jews— Torah, tefillah, the sacred and loving Jewish home, Shabbos, Yamim Tovim, and much more. Plus, we have the knowledge that whatever craziness is screamed in the headlines, every day that passes brings us closer to Mashiach and the revelation of G-d-consciousness throughout the world.

Wishing everyone a Ksiva v’Chasima Tova and a beautiful Yom Tov,

Varda Branfman THE ENGLISH UPDATE editor@teu.co.il

Chinuch

You Gotta

Believe! By Rabbi Allon Yisroel Bruckenstein

Occasionally, we compare our children and wonder why they aren’t as successful, or as well behaved, as other people’s children. Forgive me for being blunt, but his is a terrible mistake. We all know that we shouldn’t compare children, just like we shouldn’t compare spouses, houses, or personal property. But we are, after all, human beings and, even though we know that we shouldn’t do it, we tend to measure ourselves according to the standards that surround us. Such comparisons are usually the result of jealousy, and are understandably unhealthy. Comparing our children however, comes from a different place. It isn’t that we are jealous of his child’s success, or his success as a parent. Rather, I believe that it comes from a feeling of our own inadequacy as parents. We think that his child turned out that way, because he has better parents than my child does. Unlike the first type of comparison, that may lead to an attempt to outdo the other, this type of comparison invariably leads to frustration, anger, and despair. Quite often, it causes us to stop believing in ourselves, and in our parental capabilities. We may even say to ourselves, “I feel bad for my child, nebach, he has such a terrible parent!” or “It’s no wonder that he turned out this way, if only he had so and so as a parent.” With the Yomim Noraim upon us, it is an appropriate time to start over. Let’s begin by pressing the reset button on our brains. Let’s put everything back to the default mode. We will start with the basics. On Rosh Hashanah we acknowledge that HKBH is the master of the world, that he is running the show. That means that everything is in His control. It is He who determined that we should be parents to this child. It is He who chose us to raise this child. It is He who determined that there is no one in the world better than me to fill this position. It also means that He believes in my capability to succeed as a parent for this specific child. It may be a challenge, but we know, and believe, that He doesn’t give us challenges

that we can’t handle. In other words, He has already given us the tools and the ability to succeed in this mission. Although, we may have given up on ourselves as parents, He hasn’t. In the same way that we believe that He recreates the entire world every day, we also need to believe that he gives us new opportunities to succeed in our mission each and every day. Essentially, He gives us the necessary kochot to fulfill our tafkid, each day anew. He believes in us, but we don’t believe in ourselves. We fail to realize that by not believing in ourselves, we are really saying that He made a mistake, chas v’chalila or that he didn’t provide us with the necessary tools to help our child, which is also a lack of emunah. Let’s take this concept a step further. It happens sometimes that parents feel that they can’t handle their younger children. They may enlist the help of the older siblings. It is one thing to ask for their assistance, it is quite another thing to give them the responsibility of raising them. Based on what we established, Hashem gives us, the parents, the necessary tools, and heavenly assistance, to raise the younger ones as well. He does not provide the older siblings with that assistance. As an example, a parent is supposed to be blessed with an added amount of love and compassion towards his or her children. A sibling isn’t meant to have the same emotional bond as a parent. Very often, I see older siblings disciplining the younger ones. Usually it is done with less compassion than the means of discipline that a parent would use. The same can be said of grandparents. Don’t get me wrong. I am not against grandparents occasionally taking care of their grandchildren, so that the parents can receive a well deserved break. I am suggesting that grandparents beware of taking over complete charge of disciplining their grandchildren. Hashem gave them the necessary

The Telemarketer

Sometimes, you have to throw away the script. by Yael Zoldan M.A.

I was working my way through college doing telemarketing, a job despised by almost everyone with brain cells. But it was easy and it paid by the hour. The room was crowded, divided into small partitions and filled with young people like me. We were fundraising for various Jewish charities, calling numbers from a national list, usually during dinner time. With bright, cheery voices, we faked intimacy with the unsuspecting person on the other end of the line. We read smoothly from a pre-written script, reminding people of their last year’s commitment and looking for a higher one. To make ourselves sound as non-denominational as possible, all the girls were told to say that their names were Rachel Cohen and all the boys called themselves David Levine. It was a ridiculous farce, but that’s the way it was done and there was a bonus every time you got someone to commit to a high dollar amount. I wanted the bonus. Magda Schein was the next name on the list and I rehearsed the charity’s script in my head as I waited for the connection. The phone rang shrilly. “Hello?” an unused voice quavered over the line.

“Hi there, Mrs. Schein! This is Rachel Cohen,” I chirped, bright as a mirror and equally false. “How are you this evening?” “I am very well,” she answered carefully with that old European accent I knew so well from my own grandparents. I heard the years of etiquette training kick in as she added, “And yourself, how are you?” “Fine, thanks,” I answered briskly. “So, anyway, as I said my name is Rachel Cohen and I’m calling on behalf of…” “Rachel who?” she interrupted. “Rachel Cohen,” I answered enunciating loudly in case the poor old woman was hard of hearing. Then, unwilling to be swayed from my script, I continued, “And I’m calling on behalf of...” “Rachel Cohen,” she said in a wondering voice, “I’m sorry, I don’t know any Rachel Cohen and I … Oh! Wait, Wait a minute, Rachel! Yes I think I remember now, little Rachel! I didn’t hear from you already such a long time!” Then with a warmth I didn’t deserve, “Rachel, darling, how are you?”

fresh.

“Rachel Cohen,” she said in a wondering voice, “I’m sorry, I don’t know any Rachel Cohen and I … Oh! Wait, Wait a minute, Rachel! Yes I think I remember now, little Rachel! I didn’t hear from you already such a long time!”

I could hear her eagerness, her joy at the call and it made me want to cry. Instead, I reached for the script on the desk in front of me and pushed it away.

Then with a warmth I didn’t deserve, “Rachel, darling, how are you?” “I’m fine, thanks,” I answered carefully, trying to figure out how to barrel ahead, get back on track, make the sale. “So anyway, I just called to…”

“So what’s going on with you Rachel? How’s your mommy? How’s your bubby?”

“I’m good, Mrs. Schein,” I said leaning back into my seat and injecting a warmth into my voice. “I’m good and my mother and grandmother are too. I’m sorry I haven’t called for so long.” “Darling! Don’t apologize, you’re busy! All the young people are very busy.” “Yes, busy,” I agreed. “But not so busy and I just couldn’t let another day pass without calling you up and wishing you happy new year course – a gut, gebenscht yohr.”

“Of course I know why you called, darling,” she said with a little laugh. “You just “Of called to vinch me un, to wish me a I know why you called, good year. Ach, Rachel, you were darling,” she said with a always such a good girl.” I was startled for a minute. Was I always such a good girl? I didn’t think so.

“And to you!” she said quickly, “I should have said before! A year for you and yours, of health and happiness, and nachas. A year of alles gut, all the good things!”

little laugh. “You just called to vinch me un, to wish me a good year. “Amen, Mrs. Schein.”

I looked at the script but there was nothing there to help me. I had lost my words. “I didn’t hear from you such a long time already,” Mrs. Schein continued happily. “I didn’t hear from nobody a long time already until you called now. I was just sitting here looking out the window. It's silly I know, so much to do before Yom Tov and me just sitting!” Her voice burbled on and on like joyful waters released from a dam and I imagined her apartment with the dark wooden chairs on delicate clawed legs and the faded maroon velvet couch and the doilies. I saw the cherished sepia photographs and breathed the smell of things that were clean but not quite

“And a year filled with good friends like you!” she added. “Amen,” I said again, ashamed. We talked a few minutes more about Yom Tov recipes and how quickly the weather had turned. Then we hung up the phone. I stared at the receiver for a while wondering about the impossible loneliness of the elderly and how little we understand about the greatness of small gestures. Then I reached for a pad of paper and a pen and I carefully wrote down her number and put it in my pocket. To call later. Reprinted with permission of the author from aish.com.

Good Taste

THE TASTE OF HOME IS GETTING CLOSER Lieber’s, the well-known kosher food company based in New York, is built on customer satisfaction. With the Israeli consumer in mind, Lieber’s is now launching a campaign to expand its product line in the Israeli market and import many of the tastes familiar and loved by consumers worldwide. We spoke with Mr. Naftuli Chaim Moskowitz, one of the chief executives at Lieber’s, to get a glimpse into the company’s history. Lieber’s is strictly a family business and Mr. Moskowitz is a great-grandson of Reb Moishe Lieber, a”h, the company’s original founder. It all started when Reb Moishe arrived in the United States in 1935. Reb Moishe didn’t accept that America was “different” and was not willing to compromise his standards in Yiddishkeit. On Shabbos, he would walk the long distance from his Williamsburg home to the big shuls in the Lower East Side over the Williamsburg Bridge, where he would beseech Yidden living there to uphold their level of kashrus and observance of mitzvos,

regardless of their great financial struggles. No one would have dreamed that Reb Moishe himself did not have a dollar to his name. In the late 1940s, when the Satmar Rebbe, zt”l, arrived in America, Reb Moishe got involved with many askanus projects with the Rebbe. It was the Rebbe who realized Reb Moishe’s dire financial plight. In appreciation of Reb Moishe’s efforts to further kashrus standards in America, the Rebbe told those close to him to “make it our business to give him business.” They helped Reb Moishe open a small shop on Lee Avenue where he sold coffee and chocolate that he was already producing. From these humble beginnings, Lieber’s grew to become a renowned kosher brand recognized in thousands of locations around the world, with a diverse selection of products that is ever-increasing. Lieber’s products have always carried the most stringent hechsherim. Reb Moishe’s store started out with the hechsher of the Debreciner Rav, ztz”l, which remained on all his products until the

Debreciner Rav passed away. Currently, Lieber’s products are under the strict supervision of Rav Weissmandel, shlit”a, of Nitra. At Lieber’s, there are no compromises, ever. They maintain only the highest standards of kashrus throughout, from the raw ingredients to the manufacturing process and up to the finished product. Reb Moishe Lieber passed away at a young age in 1967. His wife and children took over the business and expanded it even more, eventually bringing it to where it is today. The family is proud to maintain Reb Moshe’s vision and values, and supply the kosher consumer with only the best in delicious and kosher. A major focus of Lieber’s is their kosher l’Pesach line. As a matter of fact, they produce the biggest selection of kosher l’Pesach foods than any other food company. All year around, Lieber’s retains full-time researchers who try to determine the best possible products to truly enhance Pesach for their consumers. Of course, all Pesachdik products are under the supervision of Rabbi Weissmandel and meet the highest possible standards of kashrus as well. Months before Pesach, Lieber’s employees are busy preparing orders of their various products to be shipped all over the world. At Lieber’s, they know the food trends of each country, city and even neighborhood. When one of their new products hits the market, they know where it will sell best and which flavor will be most popular in each area. Lieber’s takes product research very seriously to keep them on top of matters in the food industry. Their product research staff works constantly to find the best way to produce every new product. Who would ever have dreamed that Lieber’s would actually be manufacturing Butterscotch and Caramel Chips and exporting them to Israel? Even the consumer living in Israel with the highest kashrus standards can look at recipes and know that Lieber’s will provide them with its ingredients. Many of Lieber’s best-selling products have been on the Israeli supermarket shelves for some time. New products are always being added. Lieber’s Sandwich Cookies and Minios are already popular snack foods here. All Lieber’s sprinkles and chips can be found in baking aisles at major chain stores around the country. Lieber’s Mandarin Oranges, Snackers Crackers, and Animal Crackers are favorites in many homes in Israel. Lieber’s full line of sauces are also very popular and are known to enhance any cooked dish. They are all made in the USA and especially brought to you by Lieber’s. Whatever your intentions may be – decorating your cakes and cookies with Lieber’s sprinkles “to make them smile”; using Lieber’s pie filling in a delicious baked dish; adding personality to your cooking with Lieber’s delicious sauces; or taking a bite of a creamy Lieber’s sandwich cookie just close your eyes and feeling at home. You can be sure that Lieber’s is 100%

kosher and 100% delicious!

How I Made Peace with a Children’s Marketing Ploy from Japan Rabbi Ginzberg If you’re a parent or even grandparent of small children, you must be familiar with this character in children’s marketing that pops up everywhere. It’s so popular that if you haven’t heard of it, then please contact me because I want a bracha from you. No, it’s not Mickey Mouse. Rather, it’s something much more, uh, plain—it’s the Japanese runaway success character with a bow on the ears. Yep, you got it, it’s the absolutely adorable character that adorns all kinds of items across the globes, even decorating full airplanes (the plane outside, inside, uniforms, sick bags…), and people will pay extra and inconvenience themselves just to fly on these planes. It’s… you guessed it…. Hello Kitty! Ugh. I still want to gag as I type that character’s name because it’s so sickeningly commercial (and believe me, you don’t want to know more about Japanese marketing and the different undertones such a cute character has in Japanese society). What I find amazing is how well it has caught on all over the frum world. Even in the most chassidishe schools, and even in Yerushalayim, where I live! My daughter’s friends, from some of the finest, frummest families, have everything branded with Hello Kitty. Pencil. Briefcase. Shirt. Pillow. Piggy bank, or is that a kitty bank? Jump rope. And my daughter wanted them too. I know there are bigger problems in Klal Yisrael today than Hello Kitty that need to be addressed, but it bothered me and I resisted. However, upon the advice of the school principal, I hesitantly allowed Hello Kitty to come into the Ginzberg residence. “She’ll grow out of it, let her, so that later on, she doesn’t feel she was restricted…” That’s how Hello Kitty became a semi-welcome guest in our home. But once I gave in, I needed to find a message within Hello Kitty that I could live with… and it came to me like a bolt of

lightning. There’s something very unique about Hello Kitty, a feature that she (she? Yuck!) shares with no other cartoon character I’ve ever come across. She’s missing a certain facial feature. She has eyes, ears, a nose, but… no mouth. And so, the message of the “koshered” Hello Kitty? “Hello Kitty hut nisht kein moyl.. vayl zee redt nisht loshon hora! (Hello Kitty doesn’t have a mouth... because she is very careful not to speak loshon hora!)” Once I resigned myself that, in the name of good chinuch, Hello Kitty was going to be part of the furniture, I was able to see a wholly different Jewish message within the same image I had previously been disgusted by. I made it positive and found a way to use it to teach an important Jewish lesson. When you go to the supermarket and your kids want to buy a certain cereal which come s in a box, it’s hard to tell them: “The one in the bag is cheaper and yet it’s the same thing inside.” But when you reframe that same purchase by saying: “Look, the company thinks that we will spend almost double the money because they packaged the cereal in a box and put in a shmuntzy toy. Ha! We are smarter than their tricks… “The children often feel empowered when they see it that way and gain a valuable lesson and insight that will help them throughout their life, iy”H. If you give your word that you can keep a secret, I’ll share something with you. Deep inside, I still can’t stand Hello Kitty, and yet I make sure that when I travel, I bring back some Hello Kitty item for my child. But hey, teaching a lesson about only speaking well about people via a cartoon that’s around anyway seems like the most productive thing I can do. And I could care less if the Japanese conglomerate that owns the rights to the cash-generating whiskered kitten has no clue what loshon hora is. In the meantime, I’ve created stickers, using a Hello Kitty themed font, which say: “Hello Kitty doesn’t speak lashon hora!”

Rosh Hashana Inspiration

Change Your Focus for the New Year by Rabbi Daniel Fine A Litmus Test Indicator If you had to name the biggest problems currently facing Israel and the Jewish People at large, I would imagine that anti-Semitism and anti-Israel sentiment would probably top that list. Whether it comes to the Iran nuclear deal, or growing anti-Jewish and antiIsrael sentiment globally, the trend for expressing anti-Israel sentiments has burgeoned. This is true in many academic circles, but also among those who are simply indoctrinated from a young age to harbor and express such sentiments. A contributory and distinct angle here is media bias against Israel, inasmuch as Israel seems to be losing the public opinion war. The international media routinely takes the side of the Palestinians and implicitly or overtly

are expressed in the world outside of us. Much like internal dissonance or stress is expressed and reflected in external disjointed behaviour, we learn from the threats facing the Jewish People what we might want to correct about ourselves. This is not a blame-game, but a litmus test indicator to see what we can work on. It is possible to make the case that all of the three above areas—media bias, education and indoctrination against the Jews, and the trending of anti-Israel sentiment-- are areas of major difficulty and challenge within our society too.

Media Bias. As a politically charged country, Israel

is replete with media bias: you can read several different news outlets on any given event and you can get the

Often the people we like the least are those whom we feel threatened by the most and those who are actually the most similar to us. champions the Palestinian cause and demonizes Israel. Let us thus split the above into three distinct strands: media bias, education/indoctrination against Israel and the Jews, and the trending of anti-Israel sentiment, for the purposes of the discussion below. We are experiencing the Days of Awe where we voice our commitments for the year ahead after having journeyed through the month of Elul and its opportunities for increased closeness with Hashem. The Targum Yonassan in Parshas Shlach tells us that the connotation of the word “Elul” in Aramaic is “to spy.” During that month, we spied out any areas about ourselves that we could improve upon. It is axiomatic in Jewish thought that problems within

impression that they are speaking about different events entirely. Whether it is the omission of facts to buttress arguments, the vilifying or finger-pointing at individuals, or the disrespectful attitude and rudeness displayed to those outside of one's own vantage point view, media bias is a firm reality inside of Israel. A level of diversity is welcome, and differences of opinion are expected in a thinking society, but the extent of media machinations belies sophistication, credibility, and genuineness. We complain of media bias against Israel and vilification of her actions and individuals, but are we clean of this stain ourselves? And on a personal level, are we clean of lashon hara, machlokes and slating others?

Feature

Education and indoctrination. Education Jewishness is often all that keeps them identifying has always been at the very forefront of Jewish values. From the ancient centers of scholarship to the disproportionate rates of Jews enrolled in university in general, and in Harvard and Yale in America in particular, to the percentage of Jewish Nobel Prize winners - Jews are married to education, so to speak. Yet the education system in Israel is facing widespread problems. Our youth seem to be far less equipped with important life skills, as well as a thorough understanding of their values and what they are living for. Jewish boys and girls in secular school systems often have to wait until the army straightens them out, via the discipline and erkei tzava courses - at which point the soldiers are looking forward to their “utopian” sojourns in Vietnam, South America, Nepal or any given place outside of Israel. Short school days and huge summer vacations have contributed to the notion that scholarship or an erudite work ethic is falling, and chasms in Israeli society are widening as ignorance about other groups' ways of life increases. Yes, the yeshivas outshine the secular school system in terms of scholarship and hasmada, where 13-15hour days, 5.5 days per week, and just eight-weeks of total non-festival vacation are par for the course, but are we making the most of our time and applying ourselves fully? We point the finger at widespread indoctrination and mis-education towards Israel, but are we free of such criticism ourselves?

as Jews. How many people can earnestly answer the question: “Why do I want to be Jewish?” Their understanding of Judaism is neither thought-out or deeply explored. Plus, the dwindling of Jewish identity has resulted in a huge rise in intermarriage worldwide. Vast numbers of Jews, especially in America, have no connection to their Judaism. In Israel too, we are seeing many Jews simply picking up and leaving the country amid a freefalling lack of passion for being around Jews. Berlin, of all places, now has the fastestgrowing Jewish population. The concept that things or events on the outside are often reflected or caused by what's on the inside has a very individual level to it. As the Rambam codifies, “Those who besmirch others do so with their own blemishes.” What we often see as negative traits in others is often no more than a reflection of any negative traits we possess. “She is selfish” is an inner understanding that you yourself would like to become less selfish.

Last, and perhaps most damning is the The Outside Connects to the Inside trend of anti-Israel sentiment: It has become The following sounds crazy, and surely can't be the popular and almost a fad to be anti-Israel in many countries, regardless of the hypocrisy involved and regardless of cogent arguments to the contrary. The concepts of social popularity and trends are expected and understandable; as long as they are not at the expense of intellect and reasoning. It is a sad state of affairs that we find many Jews' connection to their Judaism limited to a matter of trending – “feeling Jewish” or social acceptance of

norm, but it actually did happen and is an extreme illustration of this concept. Someone I know who was overweight decided to go on a diet. As soon as the diet began to show signs of being successful and the pounds were falling off, this person began to show a severe dislike for overweight people because they reminded him of what he did not what to be. For the same reason, Rav Shimshon Pincus, zatzal, explained that the first mitzvah we are taught in

Rosh Hashana Inspiration

Mishpatim relates to our treatment of slaves. Having been a nation who were freed from the shackles of slavery, we would naturally find it extra difficult to treat slaves nicely, because they remind us of a past we would like to quickly forget. Often the people we like the least are those whom we feel threatened by the most and those who are actually the most similar to us. We do not like the fact that they remind us of anything negative about ourselves. Yet the positive side of all of this is that with some selfawareness, we can be in control of our inner worlds. This self-awareness can radiate into affecting our outer worlds as well. Instead of carrying over a stressful day at work into increasing tension at home, we can allow a moment's thought to turn this around: True, work has been stressful, but life at home is a haven of tranquillity that I do not want to ruin. This small decision can have great ramifications.

We Are in the Driver’s Seat Instead of allowing the displeasure and anxiety inside to be mirrored on the outside, we can project our balanced positive attitude and simcha to the outside. Thus, when someone is rude to us, it can

simply slide off us; instead of seeing this as a threat to our confidence, we can see it as an opportunity to give forgiveness and assist another. If a neighbour is not respecting our own privacy or rights, we can use our happiness and sense of security to react differently and positively. True, your neighbour might have a problem, but how you deal with it is your choice. This approach is not only more helpful for you - it puts you in control – but it is often the only way you will be able to change the other person as well. During Elul, we experienced: “I am to my beloved and my beloved is to me.” Here, too, we are put in the driving seat, so to speak. A relationship is only as strong as its weakest part, and Hashem's love for us is unlimited. The question is one of our perspective and handling of the situation with the decisions of our inner sanctuaries affecting the outer courtyards and spheres. It is thus our hope and our prayers that our successful work in bettering ourselves will lead to a blossoming new year of bounty and blessing.

Yericho and the Hakafos That Felled Its Walls by Vardah Littmann Over four decades ago I went with my seminary on a tiyul with tour guide Rabbi Pesach Levi to Yericho (Jericho). Yes, you read correctly: Yericho. Back then, it was not like it is today, deadly dangerous. Times were different: it was right after the Six Day War, and the Arabs were still in mortal fear of us. Rabbi Levi showed us the place thought to be the spring of Elisha, where the prophet sweetened the water (Melachim II: 20-22). Yericho’s constant sunshine, rich soil, and abundant water supply from the nearby springs have always made it an attractive place for settlement. The city is believed to be one of the oldest cities in the world. In fact, a set of stairs, which are said to be the oldest in the world, was found here! Layers of 23 ancient civilizations have been uncovered in Yericho. Besides being ancient, Yericho is also one of the lowest cities in the world, about 850 feet (258 m) below sea level. The city is located between Mount Nebo in the east, the Central Mountains to the west, and the Dead Sea to the south. Yericho benefits from natural irrigation afforded by the Jordan River approximately four miles to its east, and from underground tributaries from the Central Mountains which water its oasis. The average temperature is 59ºF(15ºC) in January and 88º F (31ºC) in August. These natural sources of irrigation and heat result in teeming plant life and transform Yericho into a lush, green area amidst an otherwise barren desert.

The Taking of Yericho When Yehoshua bin Nun entered Eretz Yisrael with the Jewish nation, they entered close to Yericho, as it was the key to the whole of the Holy Land and needed to be conquered first. When Yehoshua sent his two spies, he instructed them to “look at the Land

and Yericho.” But was Yericho not part of the Land? In answer, Yericho was so important that it was considered equal to the whole Land. It was the most heavily fortified city in Canaan. All the Canaani kings had sent their choicest troops to protect it. If the spies saw that in this well-guarded metropolis people were afraid, it indicated that the entire country’s population was in extreme fear. The entire land, except for Yericho, was subjugated by battles. The way Yericho was subdued made it apparent to all that Hashem fights Am Yisrael’s wars. The passuk says that Yericho was “sagur u’mesugar,” which roughly means double locked. The city was surrounded by seven walls, each one as thick as it was tall. The iron gates, with their copper locks, were intentionally not aligned. Magic spells were spun to stop all from entering, and demons could be summoned against any would-be intruder, to protect the residents of the city. Am Yisrael walked around the city — with the Holy Ark — once a day for six days, and on the seventh they circled it seven times, which totalled 13 times of encircling the city. This was corresponding to the 13 principles of our faith or to the numerical value (13) of the word “echad” (showing the oneness of Hashem).

Destroying the Physical Walls of Impurity The first march was on Sunday, while the last was on Shabbos, dignifying the conquest of Yericho with the holiness of that day. On this final day, after the Jews blew their shofaros, the walls of Yericho sank into the ground (Yehoshua 6). Rebbetzin Rina Tarshish, a renowned lecturer,

presents a deeper explanation. When we look at the world, we see only physical. When Chazal looked at the world of nature, they saw a mashal to the spiritual. When Klal Yisrael saw there was a physical wall around Yericho, they realized this signified there was a wall of spiritual tumah around the city. It must be realized that the battle had nothing to do with the physical walls. Am Yisrael’s intent was not to make the physical walls of Yericho fall. Their aim was to destroy the spiritual walls of impurity. Physical walls cannot be tumbled by encirclements and shofarblowing. The moment the spiritual walls of impurity fell, then, as a result, the physical walls also fell. Why was this city the key to Eretz Yisrael? At that time all 70 sarim (guardian angels) of all the world’s nations were in the Land. We know this from the fact that Achan took the cloak of the king of Bavel from the city. Rashi is troubled by this: How was this garment in Yericho when Bavel was not one of the seven Canaani nations?

Defeating the 70 Kings of the World Rashi answers that before the conquest of the Land, each of the world’s kings (all 70 of them) had a palace in Eretz Yisrael. Meaning, each of the sarim had influence in the Land. Therefore, all the powers of impurity were “ruling” in the Land. The conquest by Klal Yisrael of Eretz Yisrael meant freeing the country from these powers of tumah. When the meraglim that Moshe sent had said “they are stronger than we are,” they were referring to the sarim (powers of tumah) and not to the people occupying the Land. The reason that all the powers of tumah could occupy the country was because of the country’s great potential. “This against this,” say Chazal. The Land is intended for Am Yisrael, who encompasses all the 70 good qualities of goodness and kedushah. Until that point in time, Am Yisrael with all its kedushah was absent, and the Land therefore filled up with the powers of tumah. In addition to their sway in places all over the country, all these 70 sarim each had a hold in Yericho, making Yericho the key to the entire Land. The capture of Yericho meant Am Yisrael had defeated all 70 of the sarim. Once all 70 sarim were vanquished in Yericho, then all the sarim throughout the Land were subjugated and their power voided. Now it was only a matter of time until the entire Land would belong to Am Yisrael. One of the differences between kedushah and tumah

is that each drop of kedushah is perpetual and has existence of its own. Tumah, on the other hand, has existence only if it is connected to all other tumah. If one can isolate some tumah from its counterparts, it will fall.

Creating the Wall of Kedushah This was the strategy Klal Yisrael used by encircling Yericho. By so doing they were creating a wall of kedushah. Once this barrier was in place and the tumah inside the city was cut off from other tumah, the inner tumah lost its power and existence. How was the wall of kedushah built? The kohanim with the aron kodesh went first, and after them the nation. This signified the nation was taking on themselves the yoke of Torah; both the written (symbolized by Ark) and Oral Law (symbolized by kohanim whom they are guaranteed to listen to). They pledged to conduct their life “kodesh L’Hashem.” On the last day, Shabbos, they completed the seven encirclements and blew the shofar. This constituted accepting the Malchus of Hashem on themselves. Their deeds of circling the wall and shofar-blowing completely nullified the tumah inside the walls, and as a result the physical walls fell. On Sukkos too, we encircle the bimah once each day and seven times on Shemini Atzeres and seven times on Simchas Torah. In Tishrei, the seventh month, we build our personal connection to Hakadosh Baruch Hu. With the advent of Rosh Hashanah we find ourselves in heichalo shel Melech (the palace of the King), for two days. Here we accept on ourselves the yoke of Hashem‘s Kingship. We discover we are royalty. Then Yom Kippur, the mikveh of purity, arrives to wash us clean of our sins. This enables us to enter Sukkos in absolute purity. In the sukkah we are now in the Hands of Hakadosh Baruch Hu — in His shade, “tzilo dimheimnusa.” We would like to remain here all year. But the days pass and we must leave. Therefore, on Simchas Torah we encircle ourselves with a wall of kedushah as we circle the bimah with the sefer Torah. In essence, we are doing the same act that Am Yisrael did when they circled Yericho. However, the end-goal is diametrically opposite to theirs. Their intent was to nullify the tumah inside the walls. Ours is to hold in and preserve the kedushah we attained during the Yamim Nora’im.

What Makes Movement So Vital for the Development of Your Child's Brain? By Edna Navon

As parents, we do everything possible, to enable our children to develop and fulfill their potential. In most cases, during the first year of life, the child's motor development receives a lot of attention, both from us, the parents, as well as the Tipat Chalav nurses. However, many people are unaware of the importance of movement later on, at the ages of two to six years, as a springboard for the development of the child's brain.

What is the great importance of movement to the child's development? In the early years of life, movement is the key to everything – it serves as a source of enjoyment; it enables play and research; it provides the vehicle for social interaction and communication. The sensory system is active alongside the movement system. We connect with the world t h r o u g h our senses. The proper development

of both systems is critical for building a sound physical and emotional infrastructure that will enable us optimal functioning in the future. Scientific research shows that up to the age of five, the brain develops and grows at an accelerated pace, achieving 90% of its potential size. For this reason, researchers label this significant period of life as critical for cerebral (brain) development.

How does the brain develop? The brain can be viewed as a network of roads that is constantly being constructed. These roads, called "connections" and "ties", make up the infrastructure or the potential of our brain. The more developed the network of connections is, the richer and more diversified it is, enabling us in future to carry out more missions, with a greater rate of success. How are these connections created? The movements that we make help to create the ties and connections. The more we move, with greater diversity of movement, the more we activate our muscles, thereby stimulating our nervous system, causing it to create additional connections and ties in the brain. Hence, the great importance of movement in the first years of life. Movement is the basis for the development of language and speech, thought processes, emotional and social capabilities, and the ability to control our body. These skills, when acquired normally, enable the child proper control of his/her body movements, making it possible to participate in various games and physical activities, to think clearly and

creatively, to learn well and fast, to develop a proper self-image and to integrate socially.

What happens when movement development is insufficient? The development of movement is constructed modularly. As movement becomes more sophisticated and refined, it provides the child with new experiences. When children are unable, or avoid for some reason, certain movements, they receive less stimulation from their environment; their development continuity is interrupted, and this could snowball and cause them additional difficulties in future. For example: A five year old child who finds it difficult to manage simple, daily acts like using cutlery, getting dressed, brushing teeth or painting within the lines, will limit himself to playing simple games that are not age-appropriate, and might also have difficulties in carrying out more complex tasks in the future. In addition, these difficulties could also have ramifications on the child's emotional and social functions. On the emotional level, this will manifest itself in damage to his self-image, while on the social level the possible ramifications might be domineering behavior, where the child keeps telling others what to do, since he is unable to do it himself. Or, conversely, we might witness dependent, "cry-baby" behavior, with repeated requests for help from adults.

What can we do as parents? A three-year-old child who experiences abundant opportunities for various physical activities will build up his self-confidence, establishing a firm basis for thought processes, creativity, and learning. During the first years of life, the child is going through a vital, dynamic stage of development that provides a "once-in-a-lifetime" window of

opportunities f o r maximizing his mental potential. The movement and sensory systems have a farreaching influence on the development of connections in the child's brain, while serving as the basis for the development of his cognitive, emotional, and social skills. Even a slight difficulty with these systems could have an adverse effect on the child's daily functioning in play, learning, social interaction, and general behavior, and especially regarding attention and concentration. Therefore, dear parents: Don't miss this wonderful, amazing window of opportunity! Right now, your child's brain is like soft clay in your hands. Add to your daily routine a half-hour of joint physical activity with your child. You will not only gain fun, enjoyable, quality time for both of you, but also the knowledge that you have made a significant contribution to maximizing your child's development potential. Get Out Your Comfort Foods and Purr! The month of Tishrei, and more specifically, the custom of eating in the Sukkah, gives us plenty of opportunities to enjoy Hashem’s bountiful, edible creations while feeling showered with His blessings. Whether alone or with your family and friends, try serving those foods that make you feel deeply satisfied and certain that “all’s right with the world.”

by Varda Branfman An Idiosyncratic Phenomenon

Comfort Foods Contribute to Wellbeing

Although they most certainly existed since time immemorial, the idea of classifying certain foods as “comfort foods” is a fairly recent phenomenon. They are generally familiar, simple foods that are emotionally significant to a person and evocative of pleasant childhood memories. Perhaps it’s the greater need for introspection and self-awareness in our days of automated life in the fast lane that has brought the idea of comfort foods to the fore.

If your answer to this question is chocolate ice cream and potato chips, then think again. My definition of a comfort food includes the stipulation that it’s real food, nourishing, and an element of your pleasure is the knowledge that it’s good for you and contributing to your wellbeing. By that definition, a comfort food cannot be addictive or unhealthy as in overly sweet or overly greasy foods. Comfort foods make you feel good and satisfied long after you’ve finished eating them.

Comfort foods are completely idiosyncratic, meaning one person’s comfort foods have nothing to do with another’s. Their identity as comfort foods results from a complex set of family circumstances, personality quirks, geographical realities, as well as other factors.

Surprisingly enough, one of my comfort foods is the everyday, unsung and unadorned grapefruit. I like it best when cut into four sections that I can pull apart and dissect further into tiny pouches of juice. This is not the shortcut way of eating a grapefruit, but it honors this fruit’s unique anatomy which consists of countless little pouches of sweet and sour. I discovered the pleasures of grapefruit eating as a small child when I sat on the carpet behind the couch, hidden away from sight with my grapefruit in hand.

This information may be shared between husbands and wives or parents and their children, but it hardly ever gets beyond this intimate circle. Even a very good friend of many years standing may be clueless on this subject. You, yourself, may not even know which foods fall under this very personal listing unless something happens to bring them into view from your deep unconscious. As you contemplate the question: “What are my comfort foods?” try to remember back to the last time you purred while eating or found yourself uttering a series of involuntary sighs. Was it over a bowl of chicken soup or a handful of popcorn? Were you gnawing on the end of a rye bread lathered with butter? Or were you responding to a warm, fresh out-of-the-oven fragrant sweet potato?

My children remember with great fondness the tomato squash concoction that I used to serve often. They would sit with a bowl of this mildly sweet vegetable stew and mop it up with slices of bread. I made it by sautéing an onion in a bit of oil and adding small cubes of green squash When the squash and onion were tender, I stirred in a small container of tomato paste and a few spoons of raw sugar or honey. Sometimes I made it with minced garlic and left out the sweetening. The main thing was that it was tasty, warm, and filling. Comfort foods are hardly ever elaborate concoctions. A comfort food can be as simple as sticks of cucumbers

The Serotonim in “Happy Foods” My friend Chana disclosed to me that her comfort foods often involve sour cream as well. Several of her favorites are sour cream and egg noodles, sour cream and bananas, and sour cream and cottage cheese with a sprinkling of sugar. For her, a comfort food has to be soft and mushy. Not surprisingly, she also has a Hungarian grandmother.

Meat Balls and Spaghetti on Tuesdays It’s hard for me to think of anything fleishig besides chicken soup as being a comfort food, but my husband has taught me otherwise. When he was growing up, his mother kept to a regular schedule of meal preparation which was the same from one week to the next. If it was Sunday, then the whole family knew that it was hamburgers on the grill, Monday was lamb chops, and Tuesday was meatballs and spaghetti, etc. Knowing the menu of the day in advance gave the children a feeling of living in a secure, predictable world. After growing up and leaving home, my husband encountered a very unpredictable world without guarantees, but he never forgot his mother’s meat balls, and in his mind, those meat balls are associated with comfort and security. Whenever he eats meat balls swimming in tomato sauce, he thinks it must be Tuesday. When I prepare this dish for him, I begin by cooking up a tomato sauce that’s deliciously easy. I just mix a large can of

When analyzed for their nutritional content, many comfort foods contain tryptophan, a protein that converts to the neurotransmitter serotonin. Serotonin has been found to facilitate relaxation, and high levels of serotonin contribute to a general feeling of happiness and well-being. Turkey contains serotonim, and so do bananas. That may explain one of my favorite comfort foods which I learned from my friend Judy back in our college days. I take a banana, slice it lengthwise and generously spread it with peanut butter. According to scientific studies, these banana sandwiches are mood enhancers, or in other words, “happy food” because of their serotonin content. Scientific studies only confirm what we already know— that eating certain foods makes us happier. The spiritual affect of all these happiness-inducing comfort foods is an overwhelming sense of gratitude. Hashem could have made a world with nutritional but bland and uninteresting foods with hardly any comfort in them. Instead, He chose to unleash His creativity and dazzle us with a vast palette of tastes, textures, and colors that not only nourish us but delight us as well. When you connect with the wonder of it all, you might just find yourself flooded with gratitude, singing out those brachos of thanks, and jumping to your feet to dance around the table.

Come Get Advice on

Growing your Business at Temech’s Jerusalem Hub! The owner of a good-sized business in Jersusalem was discussing her business challenges with me. They included – how to interpret market facts, how to close sales, how the business can function without her being there to supervise personally, how to meet deadlines. She has no idea how to conduct a market survey, when customers can be relied upon, and when not. Also, managing the cash flow is a topic which cannot be overlooked and has to get into focus. I listened to her for about 20 minutes, and then responded, “What you need is good business consulting.” “Oy,” she answered. “Do you have any idea how many consultants I’ve already tried? I don’t know where to find a good business consultant!” A good business consultant costs the business owner both time and money, and sometimes, it’s hard to decide which is more valuable. For a new business owner, it’s harder to pay out money. For an experienced business owner, time is the more precious commodity. Both business owners feel that the business consulting really has to be worthwhile. The time they invest in consulting must bring results for their business in some way – profits, efficiency, and increased sales. Can consultation provide all that? Here are the answers:

Analyzing Information In consulting, advice is given over from the consultant to the client. Advice is an abstract commodity. We may possess a lot of knowledge, but not all the knowledge we possess is helpful for moving us ahead and getting us to act effectively. Sometimes an outside person, like a business consultant, can interpret differently information we may already have and shed new light on a situation. The consultant can take this information and make it the basis for a plan of action. Still, many times clients can come out of a business consultation with the feeling of ‘he didn’t tell me anything I didn’t know before.”

Is this true? Of course, the business owner knows all the facts about her business and understands her business better than anyone else. She is the one who has to evaluate the

ramifications of every step along the way, every single day. However, a business consultant can do this quicker.

Short Term – Long Term Businesses are usually run in a constant fight against the clock. This is even more true in the case of business owners whose primary responsibilities are to their families and children. There is never a day where it seems like everything that was in the day’s agenda got done. There are always things that could have been done more completely, better, or quicker. You could have gotten more sales or managed the business more efficiently. As a result of this continuous, high-paced pressure, it becomes hard for a business to define and calculate future goals. It’s even harder to meet them. Immediately after the High Holiday season, preparations have to be underway for the “end of the year.” There’s taking inventory, special offers, and a lot of paper work. Immediately after Pesach, the holdiay season sales have to be planned. Before the holiday season is over, winter merchandise must be ordered. During the winter season, the spring “hits” have to be ready. Who is able to keep their head above water under this kind of constant pressure? Who has time for planning the year/s ahead and for analyzing if the business is on the right track?

Your Business Consultant and Aiming for Greater Efficiency

This is precisely the reason why it is important to turn to a business consultant who is not involved in the everyday pressures of your business and is able to appraise the entire picture. It is worthwhile to invest a few hours every month to plan better, hear constructive criticism – and correct the way things are being run, if necessary. Many business consultants ask their clients to get their business finances “into shape” – which is not a very popular approach and frustrates most business owners. The business owner feels that she has employed the business consultant to help increase sales and profits, close more deals, help get lower prices from suppliers – and the consultant comes and starts out with “balancing the books.” “That’s what I have my accountant for and he happens to be my sister’s brother-in-law, so I’m

sure he really cares about me.” In a business where the books aren’t “in shape,” it’s very easy for funds to get “mixed up.” In this case, the business owner may not know exactly when she paid whom and how much. She may not realize how much she was paid and how many outstanding debts are owed to her. An accountant can only see the transactions that are reported to him, but that is not always everything. Whatever has not been properly recorded does not get reported to the accountant. Getting the books in order is a priority. A good business consultant will help with this. The consultant will help find a less complicated and easier way to accurately record expenses, payments to suppliers, income, output, debts, and so forth. Once these matters are organized, you can get a better feel of the pulse of your business – and from this point, problem solving and increasing profits become much easier to figure out.

PERSONALIZED BUSINESS PLANNING

Step by Step Consultation is not usually considered a process. Often, consultants will suggest some ideas or tips. However, good quality consultation is always information that is evaluated, processed, checked out, and adjusted. In businesses, many times, an understandable lack of certainty exists. There is ambiguity when making decisions and a lot of room for using intuition based on personal life experience. Good, quality consulting does not make decisions for you because there is no clear-cut, single, right decision for your particular market and with your particular considerations. The process of high quality consulting is prepared to examine the advice itself, to criticize, and if mistakes were made, to rectify them.

Sleeping Under the Stars by Yael Tusk, M.S., O.M.

With Sukkos around the corner, aside from sales of arba minim, sukkahs and decorations, we begin to see the ubiquitous folding cot salesmen. There are so many creative beds to take into your sukkah, the choices are endless. Some years, the nights can get rather cold. (And if you’re in chutz laaretz, you may experience arctic weather on Sukkos!) For many people, sleeping in the sukkah will remind them that winter is coming, as the cold nights outdoors lead them to contracting a common cold. Some people catch colds more easily than others, but the best medicine is prevention.

Cats and Dogs Did you ever wonder why hairy dogs shed in the summer and grow thick coats in the winter? Or why all those skinny, mangy cats suddenly look like giant fluff balls during the cold weather? Me neither! It always seemed obviousHashem, in his infinite kindness, did not want the animals to overheat in the summer, or freeze to death in the winter. When we observe nature, we can learn common sense. If Hashem put heavy coats on our canine and feline friends (or nemeses) during the winter, maybe there is a reason for it, besides fashion of course.

Scientists vs. Mom During the past few decades, scientists explored the connection between weather and the common cold. One group of researchers concluded that the parallel between cold weather and frequent infection (colds, flu, etc.) is purely coincidental. They have determined that protecting yourself against the elements is an unnecessary endeavor, since according to their understanding, weather conditions have no influence over immune function. Their explanation for the fact that people tend to get sick more during the colder seasons is that they are cooped up together in enclosed spaces for long periods of time (dubbed “The Indoor Germ Theory”). The study was flawed

since the weather conditions they used were artificially generated. There is no comparison between real weather conditions and simulated ones. While the study is interesting, its conclusions seem to contradict common sense. Most of us have seen situations where illness developed as a result of unfriendly weather conditions. People especially tend to get sick when they are not prepared for the weather (i.e., the sunny day forecasted turns into a frigid rainy day- and everyone comes home with a sniffle). People often become ill during season changes for this very reason. Regarding common sense, I believe that mothers have been given a mega-dose of it. So much so, that even the most prestigious group of scientists cannot stand up to Mother’s wisdom. In retrospect, you may recall that your mother was always right. If she did not think that it would be a good idea for Shani to wear her sun-dress to gan on a frigid winter day, even though Scientists and Shani may disagree, I put my faith in Mommy.

Doing our Hishtadlus There is an interesting passage in the Gemara (Kesubos 30a) that states: “Hakol bidei shamayim, chutz mi tzinim pachim.” Literally: Everything is in Hashem’s hands except for “hot and cold.” The explanation given for this is that if we are careless, and expose ourselves to the elements unnecessarily, the natural consequence is that we may get sick. If we do not do our hishtadlus by preparing ourselves for inclement weather conditions, we would be asking Hashem to alter nature to prevent us from becoming ill. Traditional wisdom can help us understand what role the weather plays in the common cold:

The most intense “cold” season is when summer turns to winter (in Israel, there really are only two seasons). This is a time when blustery bursts of cold air are constantly present in the great outdoors. It is during that period, when most

Health Awareness

of us are freely roaming the great outdoors (not cooped up indoors), that so many fall ill. What happens is that our bodies are not quite ready to face the chill on those warm early-autumn days, and we are also likely to go out without a jacket because it still seems warm. Then we are hit with the sudden changes in temperature, which tend to take us by surprise. We have all experienced the havoc that unexpected weather conditions can wreak. In addition to the microorganisms involved, exposing one’s body to the elements and being unprepared for varying weather conditions can be one of the primary triggers for illnesses like colds and flu. Our body’s exterior-- our skin layer and our nose and mouth-- protect us from contracting illnesses, but they are also the route of entry when we are vulnerable. When we are exposed to cold, windy, or rainy days, our external and internal immune system tries its best to protect us from the elements, but it must work much harder when fighting frigid temperatures.

What Can We Do? What can we do to prevent our families from being debilitated by colds and flu this season? First, we must we must throw out the notion that mothers are being paranoid or over-protective when they say, “Don’t go outside like that… zip up your coat…” Follow mom’s intuition-- being prepared for the weather is actually our best bet to ward off seasonal infections! Secondly, people get sick most easily when they are worn down. Lack of sleep, lack of exercise, and poor nutrition severely weaken our immunity. One of the best ways to protect yourself during the winter season is by taking immune-boosting vitamins such as vitamin C and D3. Sometimes, however, even when we do everything right, we still get sick. So what can be done to get rid of colds as quickly as possible?

Driving out the Cold According to traditional medicine, conditions like colds are considered superficial, (as opposed to heart conditions, for example, which are deep). Colds affect only the surface of our bodies. They enter the body through the nose, mouth, and skin. Therefore, one way to get rid of them is to push them back out again. This is why sweating can often help eliminate the infection. Inducing sweating is an effective treatment method for colds because it releases the “superficial condition” from the body. Releasing a cold through sweating can be done in the comfort of your own home. First, if your throat is sore and burning, your eyes red, your mucus green, and you feel hot and feverish, make yourself a cooling green or mint tea. On the other hand, if you are feeling chills, and are uncomfortable in a breeze, have a stiff tight neck, and your nasal mucus is clear, then you are a candidate for a warming tea, such as black, cinnamon, or ginger. The next step is to go into a warm, stuffy room, and wrap yourself in warm blankets until you sweat it out. Continue drinking warm drinks. If the condition is mild, this is usually enough to promote a complete recovery. After you sweat, continue to rest. Do not jump up and exert yourself immediately. Give your body time to make a complete recovery. This technique works great for children too, and they recover especially quickly. If a child has a fever, before resorting to Tylenol, try to cool him/her down with a bath that is slightly below body temperature. While Tylenol can bring the fever down, it will not push the pathogen out. The fever itself can induce the sweating. Therefore, even though Tylenol may relieve some symptoms for a little while, by temporarily suppressing the fever, it may prolong the recovery. If your body does not respond to this technique and you have a stubborn or recurring condition, call me to set up an appointment.

continued from page 8 tools when they were younger to raise their children. They don’t have those same kochot as they used to have, because they aren’t supposed to have them at this stage in their lives. If we really believe that this time of year provides us the opportunity to start over again with HKBH, then we must also believe that we are provided with an opportunity to start over again with our children. We may have made mistakes. We all do. Yes, even people who write articles about chinuch. The difference is that some of us believe that we can make a change for the better. A study has found that the effect of the good things, that we do for our children, outweigh, and have a greater impact on them, than the negative things that we have done. In my opinion, that is a result of the fact that our koach to do good comes directly from HKBH and His middah tovah is 500 times greater than His middah of punishment. It’s about time that we started believing in ourselves and seeing ourselves as Hashem’s helpers in raising the next generation. Hashem believes in you. It’s time for you to do the same! Recipe

A Sweet Main Dish for a Sweet New Year by Chef Yochanan Lambiase This flavorful main dish will delight your family on Yom Tov. It’s spiced with thyme and sweetened with prunes, sweet potatoes, carrots, and honey.

Ingredients:

3 tablespoons potato starch

1 beef brisket, about 2 kilo

1 kilo sweet potatoes, peeled & thickly sliced

1 kilo pounds carrots, peeled & sliced

1 box (350 grams) pitted prunes

4 cups beef stock or broth

½ cup honey

2 cups water

salt

1 teaspoon cracked black pepper

freshly ground pepper to taste

1 teaspoon dried thyme

snipped fresh chives for garnish

Preparation 1. Heat oven to 350º F (180ºC). Put brisket, carrots, stock or broth, 2 cups water, cracked pepper and thyme into a 6-quart Dutch oven or baking pan. Bake, covered, two hours. 2. Mix remaining ¼ cup water and potato starch until smooth. Add honey and stir into Dutch oven or roasting pan. 3. Add sweet potatoes and prunes. Cover and continue baking until meat and vegetables are fork-tender, about 1 more hour. (Can be made the day before to this point, covered and refrigerated. Skim fat before reheating over low heat.) 4. To serve, transfer meat to cutting board. Cut into thin slices. Season vegetable mixture with salt and pepper to taste. Garnish meat and vegetables with chives if desired. Chef Yochanan Lambiase is a world renowned Kosher Chef personality.
