very now and then we are privileged to print an article that has such an important message that I think to myself: If THE ENGLISH UPDATE had been created as a vehicle to bring just that one article to people’s attention, it would have justified its whole existence. Last week’s feature “Message to Parents: Love your Daughters” was such an article as it focused on the plight of teenage girls, mainly from homes with an absentee father and a critical mother, who become the vulnerable target of human predators.

In response to the article, we received a letter of appreciation (see this week’s “Inbox”) that suggests we amend the message to parents to include both their daughters and their sons in the nurturing circle of love that they create. The letter pointed out that teenage boys also act out their need for love and attention with tragic repercussions when they feel neglected or unappreciated in their homes. In the struggle to keep a roof over our heads, food on the table, and a home with good Jewish values, we may sometimes forget the healthy need that our children have to be treasured and adored by us. The generous giving of our love is a

priceless gift that can be managed by even those of us on a shoestring budget. There is really no good reason for a parent to withhold it.

A parent can mistakenly assume that a child already knows how much he or she is loved, but children are not mind readers. That love needs to be communicated in words, physical affection, small but thoughtful presents, and gestures that are custom tailored for each child. Every day is a good time for parents to strengthen their bonds of love with their children, but Chanukah may be one of the best times. For eight days, we gather by the Chanukah menorahs as all of our eyes are riveted by those tiny flames which will light our way to Moshiach. It is not only a favorable time to pray for our children and our generations, but it is also a precious opportunity to reach out to our children and anchor them with our unconditional and boundless love. Have a beautiful Shabbos and a Chanukah Sameach,

phenomenon of an absentee father or a

critical mother affects the male children in the home too. It may just manifest itself in a different way.

In regard to “Message to Parents: Love Your Daughters,” the message the author relays is one of utmost importance: Make sure your daughter feels beloved and special, so she doesn’t seek that validation elsewhere. I believe the message should have been slightly tweaked: Make sure all your children feel treasured. The phenomenon of an absentee father or a critical mother affects the male children in the home too. It may just manifest itself in a different way. How many times do you walk down the main streets of your neighborhood only to encounter clans of Jewish boys chilling with the wrong crowd? I presume the impetus for their actions is the result of the “absentee father syndrome” too. Were parents to make sure that all their children feel adored and loved, many crises could be resolved. These boys wouldn’t feel the need to pursue attention elsewhere, if it’s being delivered in lavish doses at home. I would just like to paraphrase some of P. Kupfer’s words: “Take your [son and] daughter out. Treat [him or] her like a [prince or] princess. Show [them] and tell [them]how much you enjoy being with [them]. Buy [him or] her a surprise gift and write a note telling [him or] her you were thinking of [them]. Make [them] feel like the most special [boy or] girl in the world. When a [boy or] girl feels secure, [he or] she won’t be open to the false gestures of kindness and affection of [his or her] so-called friends. - Bruchy Duschinsky, Jerusalem We don't realize how much research, medical schools, and even congressmen are funded/ paid off by one of the largest cartels -- the drug industry. I was horrified to read an article about the Bnei Brak municipality

encouraging parents to give the flu shot to children. Readers -- spread the word about the dangers. - Sheindel W., Mattersdorf Thank you so much for your informative article regarding the flu vaccine. Unfortunately, the pharmaceutical industry has made significant headway in convincing doctors and women that taking vaccines in pregnancy is safe and effective when not so many years ago all doctors knew never to vaccinate an expectant woman. We mothers have a responsibility to ourselves and our families to ensure a drug (yes, a vaccine is a drug) has been adequately tested and proven to be safe and beneficial before we decide to utilize it. Please continue to publish articles from a more holistic viewpoint as we are bombarded with plenty of information from the medical world and not enough honest, researched, and unbiased information. -S.H., Jerusalem If you ever find yourself in a debate about who the real “Palestinians” are, please consider these facts. Benjamin Netanyahu was born in Tel Aviv, Israel (formerly Mandate of Palestine). Ehud Barak, Ariel Sharon, Ehud Olmert, Itzhak Rabin, Itzhak Navon, and Ezer Weizman were all born before ’48 in the British Mandate of Palestine. The Arab “Palestinian” leaders, including Yassar Arafat, yimach shemo, were all born in Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, Tunisia, and Syria. The Israeli political leaders are called “settlers,” or more accurately, “occupiers,” while Palestinian Arab leaders are called “native Palestinians.” This is one more aspect of their lies. - Sheila Shrage, Arzei HaBira, Jerusalem.

O

ne of my classmates in graduate school had previously been a paramedic. She claimed that modern medicine’s greatest success was in the field of emergency medicine. Over the years, I have observed with my own eyes the life-saving capability of emergency medical care, and I have come to agree with her.

A Last Minute S peech

A few months ago, a friend asked me to speak to a group of neighborhood ladies who gather every Shabbos afternoon to hear a guest lecturer. “What are the guidelines?” I asked her. “Anything Jewish,” she responded. “Jewish? That’s not my specialty! I can talk about medicine or health…” “I’m sure you can come up with something Jewish.” Suddenly I realized that in recent years, through all my research, I had found the Creator at the heart of everything I investigated. The following is a brief recap of the speech I gave. My heart and soul went into the ideas I spoke about, and I hope that you will find them as uplifting as I did.

I Didn’t Take Notes

When I was studying Chinese medicine, we had a professor who was a doctor of both western and Chinese medicine. This is very common in China and we had lots of professors like this. One of the topics he talked about was treating cancer with herbal medicine. I didn’t take notes. I just listened incredulously. This fellow had another thing coming if he thought I would ever try to treat cancer! I’m pretty sure we were all thinking the same thing: Cancer is way too intimidating to be treated gently with herbs, acupuncture, diet, and lifestyle. We believed that the only way to treat cancer was chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. Case closed. With that, I put the subject out of my mind for years…

Disillusionment

Then, things changed. In close succession, a number of people I knew well died very soon after starting cancer treatments. One woman, a family friend, was feeling fine when she was diagnosed. She had immediate surgery, which initiated a rapid deterioration. She went into a coma and died very shortly thereafter.

December 4, 2014

Then, there was my uncle who was also diagnosed with late stage cancer. Even though they asserted that the situation was hopeless, they decided to treat him with aggressive chemo and radiation. Again, the treatments resulted in rapid deterioration, and death shortly followed. These cases, as well as a few other similarly heartwrenching situations, made me wonder if any other treatment options existed. I asked myself: What had made me believe that cancer was totally untouchable with natural medicine? We all know that for every illness, G-d has put a natural cure into creation. Was there any reason to think that cancer was different than other diseases? So I finally bought a large number of books on natural treatments for cancer. Incredibly, with all the progress modern medicine claims to have made in their “War on Cancer,” they are no closer to finding a cure. All that has changed is that more and more cancers are being found and treated. Despite this, death rates from cancer have not declined at all. Additionally, there are many effective cancer treatments that exist outside the boundaries of modern medicine. Despite the claims from the cancer industry, many natural remedies have stood up to intensive scientific scrutiny as being more effective than their conventional counterparts. Most of them have few side effects. Natural remedies for cancer generally only kill cancer cells and are either harmless or beneficial to normal cells. Some of these treatments are as old as time and some are more recent innovations. But they are all unpatentable and will therefore never get FDA approval (more about this in a future article).

Finally Free

All my life I carried a fear of disease and death. After realizing that modern medicine doesn’t have all the answers, I received the greatest gift. I realized that there is Only One address to turn to for life and death matters (for all matters). I’d rather put myself in the hands of the Ultimate Healer.

CHANUKAH SAFETY POEM (Dr. Seuss Style)

This poem comes from the Chaya Malka Burn Foundation which was founded by Chaya Malka Abramson who, in 1981, was tragically burnt on 85% of her body after saving family members from their burning apartment.

After

Though this written lightly, please take these tips very seriously. by

Chaya Malka Abramson

It's Chanukah! Relish to tell over the miracles of the oil, The plans of the Greeks which G-d did foil. Remember, you're part of Am Yisrael, so act very royal, Like our ancestors the Maccabees, who were brave and so loyal. Think of the importance and beauty of your unique neshama, And so be careful to avoid burns - the danger, pain, and the trauma. Before Lighting -- be cautious, prepared, and be aware. Hide the matches, and when you're finished, move away every chair. Kids love to climb -- here, there, and everywhere. In a second, they can be up on a chair! AND THAT'S DANGEROUS! I've heard painful stories of Shabbos urns falling, And children being burnt by water that's scalding. Also, don't let the children near the stove if it's hot, I've heard many terrible stories about burns from a pot. If clothes catch fire, RIGHT AWAY: STOP, DROP, AND ROLL! This will help put out the flames before they take a terrible toll. This is what I did, this put out the flames that burnt me, This is the best way - all burn experts agree. Do not light your lights on a plastic table, For it may melt and catch fire, or it might not be stable. Place the lights on metal, marble, or glass, And watch out for curtains -- they can catch fire real fast. We love latkes and donuts, from fried foods we don't tire, So know what to do if an oily pan catches fire. As fast as you can, turn off the flame. DON'T add water - that makes the flames get bigger and higher! Slide a metal lid gently over the pan, Back away . . and wait until the pan cools. This, too, is one of our Life-saving rules. And for the very last rule -Do your gas and smoke detector work just as they should? Check right away and make sure that they’re good! Check it, or them, to be perfectly sure, And if it’s not perfect, go back to the store! This isn't the time to save money, this isn't the time to be lazy, Doing so with your health and safety Is simply being crazy! Making sure your gas and smoke detectors work is no joke! You don't want a room filling up With gas or with smoke! My friends, It's essential to protect your family, and do everything right. So that Chanukah will be a joyous time of miracles and light. Remember our rules and also . . to pray every night, For our children and Klal Yisrael by the Chanukah lights. It's important to read, remember, and implement these rules. They're from me to you with love, these Chanukah life-saving tools. Chaya Malka Burn Foundation ; 0527- 627- 954; chayamalka18@gmail. com; www.cmburnfoundation.com

I

n fourth grade I transferred from an almost all-Jewish public school to a Quaker prep school. I have made In one moment of silence, my other big transitions since then. But that move to Mrs. Mitchell's classroom at The Friends School of Baltimore was by far the most traumatic transition of them all.

A Chanukah Carol

I was painfully shy, sincere, and insecure-- a toxic combination for the new eight-year-old on the block. I kept on failing the tests on Greek history, which was the focus of the 4th grade curriculum, so day after day I was forced to stay inside during recess in order to study. This was actually a relief, though, since I was also failing in the playground. One day, the daughter of a judge with an alligator on her shirt came up to me with a group of snickering friends and asked, "Did you get your clothing from a junkyard?"

Jewish

I cry because I realize that I am raising a daughter who will never ever have to worry that by being a good Jew she is being a bad girl.

Music class was the worst. In earlier grades, my new classmates had learned a complex system of hand gestures that represented the notes of the songs we sang, but I had never learned these hand gestures in public school. I was always looking at the person next to me, trying to do what everyone else did, trying desperately to just fit in.

is something important. Deep down I know that it means that somehow I am different...

And then there were the preparations for the annual Christmas concert. I was the only student who did not know the Christmas carols. I also found the words confusing. During a rehearsal of "Oh Come All Ye Faithful," I asked our teacher what all those strange words meant.

I am a person who cries a lot. I cry when I listen to Country and Western songs, when I read the Weddings section in the Sunday Times, when I hear the Israeli national anthem, when I read Aish.com.

My teacher looked back at me with a sour expression. I hoped I was not being a bad girl.

MAKING WAVES

Things started looking up when I began junior high school. I had learned, more or less, to dress like my classmates, to talk like them, to act like them. I was beginning to fit in at long last. It was a dream come true. One snowy December day while waiting for the city bus to the Jewish area of Baltimore, my classmate Erin asked me, "So, what do you do during the Christmas carols?" "What do you mean?" "I mean when they sing those Christian words. We're Jews, we can't say those words." For all those years, I had never thought about it. It had never occurred to me that I should do anything different than our Christian classmates. But I admired Erin, who later became our student-body president and an Off-Broadway director. The last thing I wanted to do was make waves. But I knew that she was right.

So during that year's Christmas concert, when we got to the chorus of "Oh Come All Ye Faithful" I looked towards the alto section and I followed Erin's lead. Right after we sang "Oh come let us adore him," Erin clamped her mouth shut and did not sing. With a racing heart I did the same. For the six years from that concert until my high school graduation, I clamped my mouth shut year after year and never discussed it with anyone. But it was significant. In fact, looking back, I realize that this was probably the most important annual event of my childhood. It was my own small way of declaring in front of my favorite teachers and my dearest friends, "Look, I don't know much about being a Jew. I pretty much only know that it means that I should not sing these words. But with this moment of silence I am telling you that somewhere deep down I know that being a Jew

MY DAUGHTER

But nothing makes me cry like my daughter's annual Chanukah play.

My daughter M a'yan performin g in her Chanukah play

This year, for the fifth Chanukah in a row, I will watch one of my daughters perform in the Chanukah play at nursery school. This year, my Ma'ayan will stand with all the other four and five-year-olds, wearing a crown shaped like a flame, and singing the same song that they sing every year about driving away the darkness. Then Ma'ayan will hold a doll and a prayer book and sing the same song that they sing every year about hiding from the Greeks in the caves in order to live as Jews. I will look around me at the other mothers with their dry eyes and their digital video cameras, and I'll know that when these mothers were children, they were singing these very same songs at their own Chanukah plays. And I will cry because I will remember that Ma'ayan in her crown like a flame is the child of that same girl who was standing on those bleachers singing "Oh Come All Ye Faithful." I will cry because my heart cannot contain the disbelief mixed with thankfulness that I feel when I remember that that girl with her moment of silence became the mother of children who fill the family's Shabbat table with stories from the weekly Torah portion, whose favorite song is "Jerusalem of Gold," who have no idea that Chanukah is not the only holiday that comes in December. But more than anything else, when I see Ma'ayan singing these Chanukah songs at the top of her lungs, I cry because I realize that I am raising a daughter who will never ever have to worry that by being a good Jew she is being a bad girl. Chani Zeltzer beauty salon

They want this to be like a testimonial letter, so I guess the letter part should be italicized and look like it’s starting in the middle, like there was a “Dear Chani,” some place.

Infomercial

When I decided that it was time to look for a new cosmetician, I never dreamed that I would find my answer davka at a salon in the center of Yeushalayim. But I did – and I’m really happy that I did. Chani Zaltzer’s beauty salon is located in a quiet corner of the Center One mall. Chani, the salon’s owner, has 8 years of experience as a cosmetic paramedical aesthetician and professional cosmetologist. She opened her own salon about 5 months ago. The salon specializes in paramedical facial treatments, treating acne, eyebrow shaping, waxing, regular manicures, shellac manicures, medical pedicures, lots of massage methods, special occasion make up, etc. They sell top brand cosmetic products, too. As soon as I walked into the place, I was greeted warmly which really impressed me in addition to the

GREAT DEAL

accessories

high professional standards that I noticed throughout my treatment. The salon employees make each and every client feel so special. The rest of my day continued on a positive note after I left the salon feeling so relaxed and refreshed. Chani Zaltzer’s salon is having a “Lights for your Skin” Chanukah special which includes a wide range of treatments at reduced prices including their shellac/ gel manicure which is already reduced to only 90 shekel. The salon has recently started selling the famous Malu Wilz brand cosmetic line. This company is known internationally for its top of the line cosmetic products. The Chani Zaltzer salon has invited the leading Malu Wilz make-up artist to give a special make-up demonstration pre-Chanukah workshop at the salon. The workshop will include all kinds of make-up tips and introduce the latest make-up styles for casual and dressier looks. Participants will also learn how to do their own make-up professionally in only 10 minutes. The workshop will take place on Monday, 23 Kislev (December 15th) at 3:30 pm. It is free of charge, but advance registration is necessary. I highly recommend not missing this one and, meanwhile getting a look at my favorite new salon! S.D.

Cooking and Consciousness

ART FOR (GOODNESS) SAKE (And how to not overindulge in high-fat foods on Chanukah, and all year round.) I used to think like a Greek. No, that doesn’t mean I was expert in Aristotelian logic, nor certainly in P ythagoras’s theorem (as my geometry teacher could readily testify after seeing me get just as lost trying to figure out the area of an isosceles triangle as if it were the

Bermuda Triangle). W hat I

mean is that

I

used to feel that

there was intrinsic value in aesthetic beauty and harmony.

M

y artistic soul developed early; my first big break occurred when my juvenile picture of a fairytale chicken so impressed my first grade teacher that it was entered in some kind of state art fair. I quickly progressed from crayons and watercolors to charcoal, ink brush, acrylics, and oils.

Aesthetic Beauty in Itself

as an

End

Impressionists, expressionists, realists, surrealists, and even Dadaists (which, by the way, are not toddlers calling for their “Dada,” although I suppose those familiar with their puerile art might be able to make a good case otherwise) were my heroes, and I’d spend countless hours in art museums gazing at their works. “Art for art’s sake,” became my motto. Only later did I realize that the glib, breezy expression was a war-cry in a millennia-old kulturkampf, within which I’d championed the wrong side. It would have been fine if my aesthetic obsession was confined to the studio or gallery, but I soon began to crave beauty and order in all aspects of my life. I’d grow mopey in environments that I deemed as ignoring, or worse, trampling on what to me seemed to be such an obvious imperative. I envied the Japanese. I became insufferable. Perhaps that’s when and why the Eibershter wisely chose to wean me from my meshugass. I’d dragged our young family from our unsightly urban environment to what I felt was the most aesthetic, artsy (yet frum) town in all of Israel. I had pretensions of holing up in one of its centuries-old stony courtyards, blissfully gazing at the azure skies and surrounding emerald mountains through the lattice of our flowering fruit trees.

December 4, 2014

That

didn ’t happen . Just as we sought to move, there bloomed a local real-estate shortage (as never before or since) that spiked rentals of such Shangri-La’s (even if you could find them) miles higher than our kollel budget would permit. But with dogged determination, I managed to find us a “cozy nest” (what was I thinking?) tucked into the middle of a sprawling, 70 families per building, porch-less tenement complex, which had been incongruously plunked, like an unsightly wart, in the middle of the pastoral hills.

A Case

of “Aesthete’s Foot ” Each day, I’d trudge the path from our (sub)urban jungle, through the Elysian artists’ quarter, to the equally enchanting Old City where I worked. At least that trek, I told myself, afforded my aesthetic soul a chance to breathe. The only problem was that each afternoon and evening I had to make the return trip, like Cinderella returning from the ball, to the drab confines of our concrete compound (admittedly filled with many fine families whom, in my visually deprived blindness, I failed to properly appreciate).

As the weeks and months wore on, these walks developed within me what I now refer to as “aesthete’s foot”—calluses on my soul, spawned by the shock treatment of the jarring daily contrasts. The environments began to blur, and as the beauty became less alluring, the unsightliness grew less off-putting. An inner-eye opened as the outer ones closed. Physical beauty devoid of spiritual content became ugly to me, and spiritual beauty came to shine—regardless of its outer package. I stopped looking…and started to see. Since then we’ve moved back to

civilization, to a nice, plain Jewish town, which happens to win national beauty and cleanliness awards—but I couldn’t care less. The “holy cataracts” I’d been given as a gift, remained. I don’t draw or paint any more. Writing is much less messy and space consuming. I still notice and appreciate beauty, but now it’s just “frosting on the cake”—not the “bread of life.”

My Newfound Aesthetic Indifference

Speaking of food (good transition, right?), I find that my newfound aesthetic indifference has carried into the realm of cooking. Sure, food should be clean and presentable, but the seeming obsession of artistic food that graces the glossies of our magazines and cookbooks just strikes me as silly. This “vertical” food— if you’ve seen the pictures, you’ll know what I mean—with its towering stacks and playful protuberances, reminds me of nothing more than the frivolous food sculptures my grade school buddies and I would fashion. We built them out of the (copious) leftovers of our unpalatable school lunches during boring, rainy days, until the lunchroom supervisor would catch us and lambaste our wanton waste. Of course, one could argue that there is a merit in uplifting the aesthetics of Yefes into the tents of Shem by creating beautiful food l’kavod Shabbos and Yom Tov, and especially on Chanukah. Still, this “food as decoration” trend trying to invade our oilam seems excessive, and all Greek to me. Speaking of Greece/grease (oy, I’ve done it again), we all know that Chanukah is the time when oily foods grab the spotlight. It’s the only holiday when the frum fry, and the “ frei”—who

light Chanukah candles—are frum (now you can see why I’m a food writer and not a humor writer). I’m not a health writer either, but it doesn’t take a food scientist to realize that while eight days of indigestion, l’shem Shamayim, may be okay, if we find ourselves drawn to fatty foods all year round, it can be a problem.

Dealing Foods

with

Fatty

and

Fried

It was a problem I had, until I got a simple aitzeh from an insightful alternative healer, a”h, which helped me (and that later on, a well-respected M.D. confirmed as sound). I’m no health professional by any means, so please take the following as just something to consider. A certain amount of oils and fats are actually necessary for our health. In normal circumstances the body absorbs

the nutrients in the fats we eat and assimilates them as needed. However, many people, particularly Ashkenazi Jews, tend to have difficulties absorbing nutrients from fats. And as our bodies are not getting the fat-based nutrients they need, a physical (and mental) craving for them develops. This leads us to seek more and more high-fat foods, which only feeds the cycle further. The craving remains, and all the non-absorbable fats we eat just accumulate as body fat, resulting in obesity and all of its accompanying problems. The healer told me that (in my case) the only fats my body could readily absorb and use were from pure olive oil and raw almonds (he’d told someone else I know, raw walnuts and pecans). If I had a tablespoon per day of olive oil and almond butter (shkadia), or about fifteen almonds (all of this could be spread out within daily meals), my fat-cravings, he said, would diminish as my body would

now be getting what it needed. He was right. I’m not saying I’m able to always stick to my regimen, or that even when I do, I have no interest a rich sauce or mayonnaise-based salad. But such foods certainly do not pull me like they would before. I’m clearer, cleaner, slimmer, and healthier. Food for thought? All that said, Chanukah is a time for fried foods, and these fried, almost schnitzels, are fun, kid-friendly (to eat, not cook), economical, and ridiculously fast and easy to make.

MINUTE SCHNITZELS Ingredients

(Recipe can be doubled, tripled, etc.) • half-kilo package of any white meat chicken or turkey cold cuts • 1 cup flour (white or whole wheat) • 2-3 eggs • oil for frying (soy, canola, etc.) • 1 tsp paprika (optional)

Directions

1. Line up three soup bowls, or any other small containers wide enough to hold a whole cold cut slice. 2. Pour ½ cup of flour into bowl #1, and ½ cup flour into bowl #3. Crack and beat eggs into bowl #2. Meanwhile, pour oil into a skillet or frying pan to a depth of about ½ inch over a medium-high flame. (Tip: Put a thick slice of raw carrot in with the oil—not only does it stop the oil, and food within it, from burning, but when it starts sizzling hard, you know the oil’s hot enough to fry with. When the carrot gets black, remove and add another slice.) 3. When the oil heats up, take a cold cut slice, dip into flour bowl #1, until well-dusted with flour. Then dip into egg bowl (#2), again coating it well, and then flour bowl #3 (to which you can add the paprika to give the finished schnitzel a more golden color). 4. Carefully place the coated cold cuts into the hot oil, as many as will comfortably fit in the skillet. They should start sizzling right away (if not, the oil’s not hot enough). Fry, for about a minute or so (as the meat is already cooked, and you’re just crisping the batter). Turn over and fry about another minute—until crisp and golden. 5. Remove with a fork or slotted spatula, and place on a plate or tray, lined with paper towels or napkins (to absorb excess oil). Repeat with the rest of the cold cuts.

6. Now the hard part: Don’t nosh them up before bringing them to the table to serve. Enjoy.

Notes:

- Do not add any salt or salty spices to flour or eggs. The cold cuts are salty-spicy enough as is. - If not serving fresh, and reheating, be careful not to overheat, as the very thin meat will crisp up and leave you with fleishig nachos. - For a thicker schnitzel, you can dip two slices together. - Experiment: Cut the pieces into different shapes before dipping, for a more real schnitzel look.

n the past, we each had our own opportunities to experiment with enhancing family simcha décor. When we first met, we were a perfect fit from the start since we both have a passion to create original and beautiful presentations. After being involved in the planning of so many family simchas, we realized that we had that extra touch to offer which led to the official launch of our new business venture together called Purple Feather, a unique party planning service in Yerushalayim.

In honor of Chanukah, we want to share with you with some décor suggestions that will add a beautiful, classy look to your festive table. To start with, we’d like to speak separately about what inspires each one of us to come up with our Chanukah décor ideas: December 4, 2014

Sheindy: When I close my eyes and think about Chanukah, I imagine light, a feeling of embracing warmth, and a touch of magic. That’s how I envision our Chanukah table this year. Growing up in Switzerland, it was always a challenge to obtain décor accessories. They were either unavailable or not so affordable. We therefore needed to exercise every ounce of creativity for each celebration. This brings me back three years ago to the time of my sister’s engagement. My mother picked up a big tree branch off the street which became part of our own original flower arrangement at the tenoyim. The unique results were a total hit. My past, outof-the-box thinking continues to guide my creativity.

Chanukah is one of my favorite times of the year. It's when we celebrate the possible of the impossible, with family and friends who come together to rejoice in the open miracle Hashem performed for us thousands of years ago. It’s the perfect time to indulge in some creative expression. It’s thrilling to use ordinary everyday items to transform the atmosphere into something extraordinary. Wherever you go, as well as in your own home, be on the lookout for interesting shapes colors, textures, and styles. Visualize how these things can set the tone for your Chanukah party or your next festive event, be it a casual get-together or a more formal simcha affair. For example, grouping burlap, wicker, and terracotta planters along with driftwood will give you a charming country effect. By utilizing old books, leather, and vintage timepieces, you can achieve the retro look. In contrast, square, sharp cut

glass and accents with stark, bold colors in a glossy enamel finish will give you an updated, mod effect. You can also experiment with mirror and silver for an elegant touch. At this time of year, you can use the opportunity to team up with friends or family to create a unique Chanukah project. What a great time to bond, and most importantly, have loads of fun! When we set out to present a Chanukah table décor to share with you, we went searching in the stores for something to express the Chanukah theme in a distinctive way. Finding affordable props proved to be more challenging than we anticipated, and we ended up resorting to our own ingenuity. As you can see in the pictures, our efforts were well worth the results. Believe it or not, you can do it too. By simply using the tips below, you can set a gorgeous party table, even on a small budget.

18

Current • Choose a color palette. Stick to two to three colors which coordinate and are pleasing to the eye. This will help you stay focused and make your shopping easier.

• Use branches and leaves to give your table that outdoorsy, rustic effect. They too can be spray painted to match your color scheme, if you please.

• Choose something cool as the focus of your table. For example, you can find in any cheap fabric store a piece of fur or leather (real or faux), or any other interesting material for your centerpiece. • Spray paint can be great tool for pulling your color scheme together by spraying old dishes, vases, or glassware that have been sitting in your cabinets, collecting dust. You can purchase cheap dishes that can be spruced up in this manner, as well. Bring out that artist in you and let the party reflect your personal taste.

• Print menu cards for an elegant place setting. These individual cards really enhance your presentation. • Chanukah presents wrapped to match the décor are definitely eye-catching.

• Make your guests feel special by placing a party favor by each place setting. Mini cupcakes, French macaroons, or a box of chocolates, just to name a few, are good choices for take-home favors.

• Believe in yourself, and don’t be afraid to experiment. Let your own creativity flow without worrying that the result has to look like other tables you’ve seen. Have your kids join you in this exhilarating project. It’s an excellent opportunity to bond with them and boost their self-esteem. • Perfect is out. In this day and age, natural and casual is the way to go. Don’t forget that your Chanukah table décor is supposed to be perfectly imperfect.

Inspiration

A

s a writer I receive a huge mailbag containing morsels of wisdom from kind hearted readers who enjoy sharing thoughts and stories that come their way. The following is just such a gift, so let’s read it together. “How do we define our lives?

“A group of alumni, highly established in their careers, got together to visit their old university professor. Conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in work and life.

by

“Offering his guests coffee, the professor went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and an assortment of cups - porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal, some plain looking, some expensive, some exquisite - telling them to help themselves to the coffee. “All the students had a cup of coffee in hand, after which the professor said: "If you noticed, all the nice looking expensive cups were taken up, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is only normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress. Be assured that the cup itself adds no quality to the coffee. In most cases it is just more expensive and in some cases even hides what we drink. “What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup, but you consciously went for the best cups...and then began eyeing each other's cups. “Now consider this: Life is the coffee while the jobs, money, and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain life. The type of cup we have does not define, nor change the quality of life we live. Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee G-d has provided us. “G-d brews the coffee, not the cups... enjoy your coffee.” Time is a gift and life is what you make of it. However, sadly, for many it is spent stressed out over the superficial trappings of life without really living. The first parshios of Sefer Bereishis speak of worlds built and destroyed. Mankind kept losing the truth of what it was they were created for, and instead focused on material gain or selfish want. Towers to the heavens, rains of huge

December 4, 2014

proportions, yet nothing was learned. It took generations until one still voice, that of Avrohom Avinu came to the fore and taught what was true. Each year we learn anew these precious stories, yet we keep getting stuck in the old shallowness and allow ourselves to fritter away yet more time. We all know that these passages of the Torah are meant to sensitize us to our real role in life, and that even before any mitzvahs are taught, we must learn how to make our lives truly worthy of them. Yet many times we just chug along, blithely losing the one gift that can never be repaid, that being our time here on earth. There is an old Irish folktale that goes something like this....The young men of a town were seeking to get from one street to another but found that a tall wall was in their way. They gathered at the foot of the wall trying to figure out how they could get over it. Then one enterprising youngster grabbed the cap off his head and threw it over the wall. Without further ado he somehow clamored up the wall, knowing he had no other way to retrieve his cap. Folklore tells us that this act became a metaphor for all life’s obstacles, and in Ireland it was said “throw your cap over the wall” whenever life seemed to bring obstacles that could be seen as insurmountable. Being spiritual in a world filled with darkness may seem impossible, yet we can hurl our caps over the wall that cuts us off from the bren (fire) of Yiddishkeit and somehow make progress. I was privileged to sit with a great sage at a chassanah recently, and his every word glimmered with the sweet truth of Torah wisdom. He told me that in the

R abbi Y. R euven Rubin

world today we may see many of our brethren doing mitzvahs, yet something seems to be missing. We have lost the warmth, the energy, and we seem to be sleepwalking through all the many acts of righteousness we do. This has happened because we have lost the inner understanding of what Avrohom Avinu and Sarah Imenu gave us as our heritage. Our hearts are encrusted with stress over materialistic goals. We walk with frumkeit, yet we have lost the ability to feel the fire. (As he said this I looked up to see the large circle of guests dancing around as the music thumped through my ears. It was that sort of listless shuffle that one sees too frequently at similar occasions, coupled with a vacant stare and a distinctive heaviness of breath.) This Rav smiled and whispered: “Remember when we were young? Before Rosh Hashanah the whole world seemed to be energized with the need to come closer to Hashem. Today it’s just another Yom Tov, another reason to buy a new suit, or some fancy shatchka for the table.” Now is the time to sweep away the cobwebs and reignite the fire of a Yiddishkeit that energizes the very being. Let’s not lose what it is we are created for, because our service to Hashem is needed today more than ever. It is our gift to be the generation that may well bring the Final Redemption, so let the coffee wake you up.

atkes are so versatile, and you can experiment with different combinations and tastes. And since it’s that time of year for spinning the latkes, I’d like to share with you a really fun and yummy recipe for carrot and apple latkes. A winning combination is the sweetness of the carrot, the crisp taste of apple, and some subtle spices. But before you start, just spend a few minutes checking out my tips on making a perfect latke:

Chef Yochanan Lambiase is a world renowned Kosher Chef personality. He was the founder of the Jerusalem Institute and hosts a popular weekly cooking show on Radio Kol Chai and THE JERUSALEM POST. For information about New & Exciting Culinary Tours and Culinary Shows in Jerusalem contact: 058 580-7261 or email kosherpro@ yahoo.com

Ingredients:

1. As the latke batter sits, the apple, carrot, and onion will give off water. While scooping out the batter, tip the bowl so you can get the batter out while leaving as much of the accumulated liquid as possible (then discard the remaining liquid once the batter is gone). This helps prevent your latkes from spreading too much in the pan. 2. To keep them from falling apart in the pan, don’t move the latkes around in the pan until they are fully set on the bottom. 3. Don’t be tempted to add more flour. The batter should be thin and the latkes should be crisp, not doughy.

Car rot- App le Lat kes

1/2 medium sweet, crisp apple unpeeled, cored, and shredded

2 tsp fresh lemon juice

2 medium-large carrots, shredded

1 small onion, thinly sliced into halfmoons

2 large cloves garlic, grated

1/2 tsp salt

1/4 tsp black pepper

1/4 tsp ground ginger

1 pinch ground cinnamon

2 large eggs, lightly beaten

2 Tbsp all-purpose flour

oil, for shallow frying

sour cream, for serving

minced fresh chives, for serving

Preparation: 1.

As soon as you shred the apple, toss it together with the lemon juice in a medium bowl. Stir in the carrot, onion, garlic, salt, black pepper, ginger, and cinnamon, and then stir in the egg. Stir in the flour just until incorporated, being careful not to over-mix.

2. Preheat a large skillet over medium-high heat; add enough oil to generously coat the bottom . 3. Once the oil is hot, use a 1 1/2 tablespoon scoop to measure the batter into the oil, being careful not to over-crowd the skillet. Cook the latkes until golden on both sides, about 2 to 4 minutes per side, flipping once. (You can adjust the heat down as necessary so the latkes don’t cook too quickly.) Transfer the cooked latkes to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil, and cook the rest of the batter the same way. (Using a 1 1/2 tablespoon scoop, you should get about 16 to 18 latkes.) 4. Serve hot with minced fresh chives sprink led on top, along with sour cream Serves about 6 

Out & About

I

n the early 1970s the Jewish Agency decided it wanted to dismantle Moshav Gimzo. At that point there were only about 20 families living in the place and it was not paying off financially. Rav Avraham Baruch Rosenberger, zatzal, the moshav's Rav, wrote to Harav Yoel Teitelbaum, the Satmar Rebbe, zatzal, for advice. The letter the Rebbe wrote back is kept in the home of the present-day Rav of the moshav, Rav Eliav Meir. In the letter, the Rebbe stated clearly: "A place in Eretz Yisrael-- we do not leave."

Moshav Gimzo and the Sycamore Trees

Moshav Gimzo is a place we could all do well to learn from. There are many stripes of frum Torah observant Jews - Chassidim, Litvaks, Sephardim, Ashkenazim, Agudistim, Mizrachim, Shas supporters, etc. - all living in harmony and friendship, with mutual love and respect.

Moshav Gimzo the Ages

throughout

On the outskirts of the Ben Shemen Forest, Moshav Gimzo was founded

on the 11th of Adar, 5710 (February 28, 1950) by Hungarian chassidim from a group called Etz Chaim, affiliated with the Po'alei Agudas Yisrael Party. In the western plains, at the foot of the Judean Mountains, the moshav is located between Lod and Modi'in at the major crossroads of Route 1 and Route 433, which are both main arteries leading to Jerusalem. We find Gimzo mentioned in Divrei Hayamim II, 28:18. It was there that Hashem sent the Philistines to conquer cities of the lowlands and the south of Yehudah, among them Gimzo, as a punishment for King Ahaz who had led Yehudah to disgrace and betrayed Hashem. Gimzo's name is thought to derive from the orange/yellow fig-like fruit, "gomez," of the sycamore (shikmah) tree which was once abundant in this area. In the Mishnah in Shvi'is, Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel says in his demarcation of the land for be'ur that "‌ a sign of the plains (lowlands) is sycamore trees." He bases this on the verses from Melachim I, 10:27 and Divrei Hayamim II, 1:15, which tell us that Shlomo HaMelech made cedars in Yerushalayim as plentiful as sycamores in the lowlands. The Tosefta says that at the time Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel gave this definition, the Romans had so devastated the land that the sycamore of the plains were greatly reduced. It is said that the Tanna Nachum Ish Gam-zu lived in Gimzo. He always said, "Gam-zu l'tovah (This too, is for the best),"

which is a play on words with the name of his hometown. During the Bar Kochba rebellion (in the years 132-135 C.E.), there was great destruction to the Jewish settlement in the land. The country's great earthquake of 364 C.E. caused many Jews to leave the country. The difficult economic and security situation at the time also contributed to the exile.

sicon (fig) and moros (blackberry bush). The sycamore's leaves are similar to the blackberry bush and its fruit is similar to the fig. The Navi Amos was a dresser of sycamore trees. This involved slitting the top of each piece of fruit to hasten its ripening and to produce a sweeter, more edible fruit. The process also prevented insect infestation.

The Roman Empire slowly crumbled, losing its hold on the area, and 408 C.E. saw the end of 500 years of RomanByzantine rule. It seems that the Arab village of Jamzo was settled some time during the Ottoman period. The village was east of today's Moshav Gimzo on the Tel-Gimzo.

From Egyptian sources, we know that in ancient times the sycamore tree was quite common in the Nile valley. Egypt was known as "the land where the sycamore tree blooms." In addition, its fruit was called "fig of Pharaoh." The Egyptians considered the tree's shade a delight. With its wood they built coffins for their mummies. In Tehillim we are told how the plague of hail struck the Egyptian sycamore trees.

In 1917, the British, under the command of General Edmund Allenby, took control of Palestine. As the British 52nd division advanced to Jerusalem through the Beit Horon Pass, they spent time at Jamzu. During the 1948 War of Independence, "Operation Dani" was planned to free Lod, Ramla, Latrun and Ramallah so as to enable supplies up to the besieged Jerusalem. There is mention of Jamzu in these plans. On July 10, 1948, the religious company of the Palmach conquered the settlements of Anabe, Jamzu, Daniel, and Dahariya. These settlements had already been abandoned (except for a few aged or sick villagers). As Jamzu is a strategic crossroad and gateway to the Judean Hills, the Arab Legion tried (unsuccessfully) to retake it.

Regenerative Powers Sycamore Tree

of the

The sycamore, the "ficus sycomorus," belongs to the same family as the fig tree. Its name comes from the Greek

The Gemara in Bava Basra speaks of the sycamore and its extraordinary regenerative powers. Its branches were used as beams to build homes, but the tree was like a self-producing "factory," as each time its branch was cut off, it would grow a new branch. Even if it was chopped down to the ground, it restored itself and grew new limbs. Sand could cover it completely (branches and all) and it would still survive. Hence its Hebrew name shikmah, which is related to the word shikum, meaning rehabilitation. When a field was sold, it was selfunderstood, even if not specified, that the shikmah trees and self-grafted carob trees were not included. Yeshayahu (65:21-22) compares the regeneration of Am Yisrael after years in exile to a tree that the Midrash (Bereishis Rabbah) identifies as the sycamore.

Keeping S hemitta

in

Moshav Gimzo

In the early 1950s at a meeting in Kfar Saba, Holocaust survivors who were Satmar and Vizhnitz chassidim decided they wanted to set up a place where they could farm and be able to keep all the mitzvahs of Eretz Yisrael. Moshav Gimzo was the result. In 1951 a group of olim from Morocco was settled in the moshav by the Israeli government to increase the population. The first years were excruciatingly hard. The land was difficult to farm and barely gave any parnassah. Many left. At that point the exchange of letters between the Rav and the Satmar Rebbe, zatzal, that is mentioned above, took place. Then there was an influx of new people. Rav Rosenberger made sure Shabbos and Shemitta were always observed. His chassidishe shtiebel, with all its minhagim, still functions today and attracts many in the moshav who are not chassidish to daven there. Many people come to Gimzo to spend Shabbos or the Chagim.

The moshav has grown substantially from an influx of new families, and has built a new neighborhood with housing for Gimzo's younger generation. Today, this beautiful, vibrant, and growing moshav has a population of 230 families, and about 1,150 people live there. The major forms of agriculture in Gimzo are deciduous trees such as peach, citrus, apple, plum, etc., as well as olive trees and vineyards for table grapes and for wine. There are many residents of Gimzo who work outside the moshav in different fields of endeavor. On Moshav Gimzo stands a white igloo type of building, surrounded by beautiful gardens. It houses a Judaic art studio - Shesh Moshzar, established 20 years ago by Yehudah and Miriam Aranne. They produce magnificent aron hakodesh covers, Torah mantles, chuppahs, tallis and tefillin bags, challah covers, bris pillows, wall hangings, kesubos, and general artwork. For more information on their artwork that travels worldwide, and to visit the igloo in Gimzo, call 08-928 5513.

Serial Chapter TWO by

Chana Rubin

TO LIVE IN

JERUSALEM S

ara replayed that evening as she had done so many times in her thoughts in the last 24 hours. She was in her compact kitchen in Rechavia, preparing dinner for her beloved husband. She had washed the lettuce for a salad and was holding the wet leaves up to the light to check for bugs.

It was a small thought, a whispering voice that almost went unnoticed, like a powdery butterfly flitting past in her brain. I don’t deserve to be happily married.

Reuven walked in. “What are you doing? The water is dripping all over the floor! What a mess!” Sara couldn’t believe what she was hearing. His voice was magnified in her mind. The tone Reuven used was so, well … so harsh. Yes, he was yelling at me! Reuven continued. “And look at the way you’re using the knife!” He picked up the knife and looked at the blade more closely. “There’s no edge on it anymore!” Was this the same gentle, caring person she had married one month ago? It couldn’t be. Perhaps he has a side to his personality she had never seen. Sara fired back, “This is my kitchen and you’re not supposed to be in here. What right do you have to criticize me? You don’t even cook!” Sara felt her face flush. This would go down as their first fight.

she couldn’t stop herself. She pushed her plate away, stood up, and put on her coat. Reuven looked up, confused. She cast another glance in his direction as if to say “You drove me to this.” Sara opened the door and walked into the hallway, slamming the door behind her. Yes, that’s what you do. You slam the door. Her parents’ fights were always dramatic, full of screaming and slamming doors. Sara found herself on the street. She breathed in the cool night air and it woke her from the nightmare she had been creating. She walked up towards the red glow of the traffic light. The tears felt hot on her cheeks. Her thoughts were coming too fast. And then she saw it. It was a small thought, a whispering voice that almost went unnoticed, like a powdery butterfly flitting past in her brain. I don’t deserve to be happily married.

She continued checking lettuce at a furious pace, dripping more and more water on the floor, like some instinctive animal marking off its territory. Who does he think he is? she fumed silently.

Sara was shocked by the simplicity of the message and the overwhelming implications. Sara stopped walking. She felt her heart beating too fast. She stood under the street lamp and slowly turned around, making her way back to her apartment and her home with her husband.

What did I do to deserve this kind of treatment? To talk to me like that. Here I am happily making dinner and he comes in like some bully… On and on, that inner voice droned, stoking the flames of fury. She never even stopped to try to figure out what precipitated her husband’s outburst. She just came out of her corner punching.

Sara came in. Reuven was washing the dishes. She quietly sat on the couch and reached for her wedding album. Oh, they were so happy in those pictures. There was no greater happiness that Sara had ever experienced. That was when history started. It was all so simple – dancing and laughing and smiling, just the two of them.

TO LIVE IN

JERUSALEM

Sara scraped the dinner out of the pan onto a plate and dropped the plate onto the table. “Here’s your dinner. I hope you enjoy it!” Reuven sat down and Sara sat opposite him. She pushed the food around on the plate. She couldn’t eat. She was waiting for an apology from Reuven. She looked at his face. She couldn’t believe the anger she saw etched on his features.

What right does he have to be angry? I’m the hurt one! He attacked me! Sara’s thoughts whirled around and around. She threw her fork down onto her plate. Yes, she remembered seeing her mother do that often in the midst of that stormy marriage with her father. That gesture was something a wife does when she’s hurt. She knew that what she was about to do was foolish, but December 4, 2014

Reuven walked in to the room. He sat on the couch. “I’m afraid,” whispered Sara.

“What are you afraid of?” Reuven said quietly without looking at Sara. “I’m afraid we’re going to get divorced.”

Reuven turned to her. He looked incredulous. “What are you talking about? Who said anything about divorce? How long do you think we’ll have to be married before you believe that we’ll never get a divorce?” Sara didn’t know what to do with her impending premonitions of doom, tears streaming down her face. She answered,“I don’t know, but I hope it doesn’t take too long.” To be continued

CHANUKAH TOURS Part 1

In the days of Mattisyahu, the son of Yochanan the Kohen Gadol, the Chashmonean and his sons…(from Al Hanissim) Mattisyahu the Chashmonean fled from Jerusalem, where the persecution was strong, and settled in the small village of Modi’in, approximately 10 miles from Yerushalyim. Antiochus sent Syrian mercenaries to force the villagers to offer a sacrifice to the Greek god. The soldiers tried to bribe Mattisyahu to bring the offering, whereby, he and his sons would be given privileges and a monetary award, but he refused. Another villager, however, was eager to befriend the Greeks rushing to offer the sacrifice. Mattisyahu was furious. He killed the renegade Jew together with the Syrian mercenaries. Together with his sons, he fled to the hills where he would be able to practice the Torah freely. Other loyal Jews followed. Mattisyahu organized armed resistance to retaliate. Six thousand Jews gathered under his banner and struck in nighttime raids, beginning the revolt that eventually lead to the miracle of Chanuka and the liberation of Eretz Yisrael from foreign forces. When Mattisyahu died, his son Yehuda became the new rebel leader. He was called the Maccabee from the initial letters of the four words of his battle cry, Mi Kamocha be’ eilim Hashem, “Who is like You among the heavenly powers, Hashem” (Shemos 15:11). The miraculous story of the one small flask of oil that lasted eight days took place during the third year of the revolt. Total independence from Greece occurred twenty-eight years after Mattisyahu fled into the mountains where he began the revolt.

Tour these areas with Artzeinu Tours.

TOUR: Footsteps of the Maccabees Most of the battles between the Maccabees and the Greeks took place in the foothills of Yerushalyim about half an hour’s drive from the city. Leaving Yerushalyim we are traveling north, past the Ramot suburbs, onto a winding path leading up to the grave of Shmuel Hanavi. According to some authorities, the grave of Shmuel Hanavi is also the site of the biblical city of Mitzpeh, where the Maccabees prayed to Hashem to save them from Antiochus’ forces. The Syrian mercenaries were confidant of victory. The Maccabees cried out to Hashem at Mitzpeh and then celebrated a miraculous victory. The Greeks lost so many soldiers three thousand – that it took Antiochus’ forces a full year before they were able to reorganize themselves for another attack. According to the Ari Hakodesh, Shmuel’s parents, Elkana and Chana, are also buried there. This area, also called Rama, was a vibrant center of Jewish life during the era of the Judges and first Beit Hamikdash. It is interesting to note that during the Six Day War, on 28 Iyar, Shmuel Hanavi’s yahrtzeit, the site was liberated. Climbing the winding, narrow road leading up to the building housing the grave, the guide, Rabbi Yeshaya Jacobs, points out the beautiful olive, pomegranate and fig trees. Surrounding the structure is a large archeological dig, with remains dating back nine hundred years to the time of the Crusades. The Crusaders originally built the structure, which was later converted into a mosque, Today it contains, in addition to the mosque, a shul and kollel. When you enter the building, turn right. The tomb is down the stairs and to your left. There are special prayers posted on the wall to be said at this holy site. One of them was discovered in the famous Cairo Geniza. In order to enjoy the panoramic view and get a bird’s-eye picture of the battles that took place nearby before you leave the building, climb the narrow, steep staircase located right next to the main exit. Facing north, there's a wonderful view of the Shomron. In the distance, the beginning of the Gofna foothills can be seen. When Mattisyahu killed the renegade Jew and the Syrian mercenaries, he fled into those mountains. It was from there the Maccabees set out to fight the Greek forces. To be continued next week (Shabbos Chanukah)
