Letter from the Editor

DEAR READERS T

oday was the anniversary of the day my husband, our 13 month old baby, and I came to live in Eretz Yisrael. That sweet 13 month old has since grown up and moved on to build her own bayis neeman, B"H. My husband and I celebrated this landmark day by filling our glasses with a l’chaim and wishing each other another 31 years (and more) as Eretz Yisraelniks.

Coming here was an act of courage, daring, and idealism, which was modified with the word “foolhardy” by some of our well-meaning friends who were well-versed in the language of dollars and cents and worried for our financial solvency. However, it made sense to us since we knew that the longer we stayed put in the Known (America) with all its cushions and safety nets, the harder it would be for us to leap into the Unknown. On landing, we went straight from the airport to a temporary rental on the top floor of an apartment building in Undsdorf. It was so cold in that drafty apartment that we felt as if we were living in a walk-in freezer. In that initial period of time, I kept reminding myself that 1) All beginnings are hard, and 2) Eretz Yisrael can only be earned through difficulties. Despite all that cold and rain, we had

come at just the right time since it was Kislev which is the month of dreams as we see in these parshas of Yosef’s dream, the baker and the butler’s dreams, and Paroh’s dreams. Our coming to Eretz Yisrael was not only fulfilling a compelling dream that we shared as a couple, but we were also realizing the dream that had accompanied our families over continents in all their many wanderings throughout the generations. We arrived in Kislev on the day before Chanukah. One of the first things we did was to find our way to Geula to buy a chanukiah and join the crowds who were also making their holiday purchases.

I’ll never forget that first evening as we scouted out the most beautiful menorah we could find in our price range. The feeling we had of being like dreamers was not just a result of our exhaustion after the flight. We felt as if we had entered another dimension, and the chanukiah that we chose after much deliberation cost about the equivalent today of 100 shekels and shone like the finest silver. Have a beautiful Shabbos Chanukah,

Him.

Thank you for providing a platform for English speaking residents. It was very interesting to read two weeks ago “Message to Parents: Love Your Daughters” and last week’s letter which pointed out that the same applies to sons. Interestingly, both writers forgot another very important point which we learn from last week’s parsha, namely the danger of showing favoritism to any of your children. You might think in your mind and heart that one child is more what you want your children to be BUT DO NOT SHOW BY ANY ACTION! Remember they are all your children, even though some might not have as many of your good genes as the others. You want your family to be caring, loving, and supportive while you are with them, and you want them to be the same after 120 years.

your readers in response to an article you’d printed presenting some beautiful ideas and thoughts about the Aron Sofer, a”h, tragedy. The letter to the editor called upon all Rabbanim and educators to begin seriously enforcing safety regulations among yeshiva bochurim. With all due respects to the writer of the letter, this is not the message Hashem is sending.

-Emanuel Fischer, Jerusalem

In the wake of Klal Yisrael’s most recent tragedies, we turn to R’ Pincus’s awesome message of faith as a beacon of clarity in these trying times. It’s not the Arab terrorist, nor is it the Israeli security system (or lack thereof). It’s clearly a Heavensent, loving reminder that He is calling us, waiting for us, and wants only for us to strengthen our relationship with Him.

Many years ago, a friend of mine had to rush to the emergency room with her infant daughter, who was clearly not well. The doctor on duty sent them home with some reassuring platitudes and a prescription for Acamol. Sadly, the little girl was niftar shortly thereafter from neglected meningitis. Well-meaning friends and family members advised the baby’s parents (who were far from wealthy) to have the doctor sued for malpractice. As the father was a talmid of R’ Shimshon Pincus, zatzal, he went to discuss with the Rav the halachic ramifications of suing a Jewish doctor. R’ Pincus was firm in his response: “Don’t do it! If you get yourself involved in a legal case, you will start thinking that the doctor caused your daughter’s death. He didn’t! Hashem took her.” What a powerful statement. And how eternal its message.

When a young soul is taken from us so suddenly and tragically, it is not the way of Torah Jews to blame the temperature in the forest, the color of his jacket, or the absence of a cell phone. We are a nation of deep internal beauty and we use tragedy and grief as an impetus for spiritual growth, introspection, and teshuva. After the event, the link between outcome and necessary hishtadlus is just a distraction from the purpose of the pain.

-Y. Frankel, Jerusalem During this terribly difficult time for Jews throughout the world, we are in dire need of strengthening and encouragement, signs of hope, light. This past week was the Shloshim of the tragic terrorist attack in Har Nof. There was and is tragedy and pain, but also a tremendous outpouring of chesed and yeshuos. It is important to remember the chesed, the people who were saved, and the noble behavior of so many during and after what happened. -A Reader, Har Nof

“Zos Chanukah”

Kodesh Hakodoshim

Tefilas HaChashmonaim A tremendous prayer assembly, a minyan composed of pure-lineaged kohanim who are great in Torah and yirah, who will daven fervently for the donors of Vaad Harabanim.

According to the special seder tefilah stated in the Tashbatz as how the Kohanim Chashmonaim prayed 2200 years ago, thereby meriting their great yeshu’ah. May we too merit great yeshu’os this year as well – as it was bayamim hahem, so may it be bazman hazeh!

L et's imagine for a moment the following scenario. Hakadosh Baruch Hu asks his malachim to prove Klal Yisrael's power of unity. Michael presents the brutal kidnapping and murder of three young teenagers . HKB”H is impressed by the outpouring of love and unity from Klal Yisrael. Gavriel presents a war in which Klal Yisrael is inundated with missiles flying in from Gaza . Klal Yisrael responds with overwhelming love and unity. HKB”H is amazed by the response.

R

ephael figures that just a little bit more and the scales might tip in our favor. He suggests the brutal murders of precious Jews in shul, at bus and train stations, and it seems that the geulah is a done deal. Whereupon the Satan walks in and says one word that upsets the whole process: ”Elections.” Here we are again, facing elections and all the in-fighting that goes with it.

Obviously, we can't change the system, but we can change our reactions and perhaps our children's reactions. Kids love action. Elections provide plenty of that with banners, pamphlets, and stickers littering the holy streets of Yerushalayim. I don't suggest trying to fight their involvement. It's a lost cause. You can't expect your children to be excluded from the crowd. However, I would like to suggest that we can make a difference in the way our children react to people who don't share our political convictions. The tendency among human beings is to see diversity as a negative thing. If someone is different than me, then he must be demonized. As the Netziv says in his introduction to Sefer Beraishis, explaining the sinas chinam of the Churban HaBayis era: "Those who were different... were seen as apikorsim." This

phenomenon infects all groups across the political and religious spectrum. Those who talk about loving your fellow Jew seem to forget that it applies to everyone, even Chareidim. And yes, Charedim are guilty as well, both within and outside of their circles. And this is where I believe we can make a difference. Use the upcoming elections as an opportunity to teach your children about respecting other people's right to disagree. We don't have to feel threatened by someone else's opinion. Tell your children about Rav Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld and Rav Avraham Yitzchak HaCohen Kook, who despite arguing vehemently with each other, maintained respect for each other and worked together on bringing Judaism out to the distant kibbutzim and yishuvim. Tell them that we can have a difference of opinion without having a machlokes. Elections don't have to turn our society into the ugly "color war" atmosphere that we remember from our childhood. We can be proud of who we are, and what we believe in, without having to disparage anyone else. Who knows? Maybe the Satan's "plan" will backfire, and he will actually be the angel with the idea that tips the scales in our favor.

Menorah, Stay! by

I

t’s Friday, and Chanukah finished last night. I have a confession to make: My menorah is still sitting on our window sill. Yup, with the wicks, oil, and all. The shocking part is that it’s not a shalom bayis sore point. My husband actually made a move to put all of it away but I quickly yelped, “No! No! Keep it there.” After only two years of marriage, he was a tad surprised but quickly dismissed it with his solve-all-shalom-bayissolution-- “Women!” (Should I tell him it’s not actually women-kind but me?) He wasn’t completely shocked either because he’d already had to deal with my strange phone call yesterday. “Can we stretch it?” I asked. “Stretch what?” “Chanukah, of course!” said I.

“Well, what do you have in mind?” said he. “It’s 2:30 now. Let’s wash in two hours, right before sunset. Then we can celebrate for as long as we like and still say Al HaNissim when we bentch.” First a chuckle, then silence. I realized that it wasn’t going to be an automatic “yes” so I quickly went on. “Did you not tell me that the Rhiziner Rebbe said that what a tzaddik can accomplish during Neilah, a simple Jew can accomplish on the last day of Chanukah? In any case, some extra time to daven can’t hurt.” A few minutes later, he was convinced. So there I was late, Thursday night, still at the table, still with my tefillos (my husband had long ago bentched). Yes, I knew the veggies were waiting to be peeled for the Shabbos chicken soup. Yes,

I knew the house wasn’t exactly ready for a queen to arrive. But how could I leave Chanukah behind? It all started with a strange story that happened to me about eight years ago, when my family and I were still very new to Yiddishkeit. I came home from a long day at school looking forward to a yummy dinner, some time for homework, a warm shower, and then my cozy bed in my new fleece pajamas. But when I turned the corner of my block, I noticed the lights were out in our house. I didn’t have a good feeling when I saw that and started walking faster. When I got a little closer, I saw the strangest thing-- a small flame near our window. My heart raced as I prayed, Please, just don’t let it get bigger! I ran up our walk and threw open the

happened to our forefathers that we don’t want to forget and we don’t want the world to forget,” my mother began. “Really? What miracle?” I asked. “Well, 2,152 years ago there were these Greeks…” I settled into our green leather sofa. A few minutes later, I’m starting to get the picture. “So you mean to tell me that we’re celebrating the miracle of finding pure oil? But what if we hadn’t found it? What would have happened to the Jewish people? What’s the big deal to wait a few days until some fresh oil is processed? Weren’t they glad enough that they won the war against trained fighters with elephants and lived to tell the tale? Sorry, I’m not trying to be difficult, Mom, but I’m not sure I get this.” My mother, being new to all this herself, looked helpless for a second. But my father quickly came to her rescue. “Maybe this can explain,” he said, passing me a box from our local kosher bakery. I couldn’t get the string off fast enough- it smelled so good. Inside, I found three donuts sprinkled with white sugar. “Ma! What got into you?” (My mother is the ultimate health nut.) My father commented, “Well, what does it look like to you?” “Donuts, obviously,” I was quick to respond. “Is that all?” my father wanted to know. “Um, yeah, they’re donuts,” I said, but now I was more confused than before. My mother joined in, “That’s exactly what the Greeks wanted us to think.” door. “MA! I THINK THERE’S A FIRE!” I was already halfway down the hall when I heard my mother call softly, “Darling, calm down please. I’m right here.” I spun around to see my mother sitting at the window with…my father! “Daddy! What are you doing home so early? You usually don’t get back from work for another three hours.” (My father was the classic workaholic.) Then I remembered to look for the flame and I saw that it was contained in a little gold candle holder. “Uh, I guess you really do miss the old house and the fireplace… cute substitute.” Ignoring my sarcasm, my mother said, “Sweetie, we’re not playing fireplace.” “Then what?” I asked. “We’re celebrating Chanukah.” “Chanukah? Tell me more.” “Well,

actually

a

miracle

“Ma, WHAT are you saying?!” “Well, I was listening to a nice class from the Rebbetzin. Would you like me to play it for you? It’ll explain your question.”

When I got a little closer, I saw the strangest thing-a small flame near our window. My heart raced as I prayed, “Please, just don’t let it get bigger!” “They had a message for us: You want to have a building? No problem, but it can’t be a sanctuary. You want to start a Jewish family? No problem, but it can’t be in kedusha. You want to have a Jewish child? No problem, but you dare not make him holy. You want to have seven days in your week? Go for it, but you dare not choose one of the days and make it holy. You even want to light a lamp? Sure, be my guest, but you dare not light a menorah! You dare not imagine this light is reflected in Shamayim somehow. You dare not think that pure oil makes a difference to your G-d. We won’t kill you. We will just kill your soul. “But when they see our souls won’t be killed so easily, they go after our bodies. So we fight the fight and win the war. And we run faster than our legs can carry us back to our Beis HaMikdashturned-house to turn it back into a home, a Bayis. And first things first: We need our menorah. True, we may have won the physical battle but that’s not what this battle was about in the first place. So we haven’t won anything until we have our pure oil back. “Kedusha is the belief that the spiritual world is just as real as the physical world. And what’s more-- my physical actions echo in the spiritual world.

The J ew

“Please, Mom!” She connected her mp3 to the speakers and pressed “play.” I heard the Rebbetzin’s voice: “You see, this was a unique miracle in Jewish history. Was the battle about land? Not quite. It almost never is with non-Jews. It was about a clash of ideas. It was about kedusha. Imagine we went into the Beis HaMikdash after the Greeks invaded. What do you think we would have seen? Did the Greeks bash, crash, and burn the Beis HaMikdash? No, instead they made little spaces in the walls. Did they bash the menorah? Did they spill oil over the ground? No, instead they simply popped the seals on the pure jars of oil.

“Abba, I think I get it! The Greek says: ‘It’s a donut, that’s all. What you see is what you get. But the Jew answers: ‘You lie. There’s jelly inside!’" “That’s amazing,” I respond. “But wait, remind me what this all has to do with a donut please.” “It’s simple,” my father says. “The Greeks insist: ‘You want to speak of two worlds? You want to imply that there’s something deeper inside that body of yours? You dare not.’” “Abba, I think I get it! The Greek: “You ’re a body.” The Greek says: The J ew: “I’m a soul! (My body ‘It’s a donut, that’s all. What simply chauffeurs my soul .)” you see is what you get. But the Jew answers: ‘You lie. There’s jelly inside!’” “You got it!” says my father proudly. “Now let’s have some donuts!” It’s been a while since that first introduction to Chanukah. What I’ve come to see since then is that the Greeks still fight today. I know the toughest one is the one living inside my head, more commonly known as The Yetzer Hara. He’s the one who tells me night and day: “Why bother? It won’t matter anyway.” Today when I got up to daven, he came in for an attack. But I did just what my ancestors did to the Greeks of their time-- I ignored him. Instead, I turned to my Creator. “Hashem, I’m standing up to daven Shacharis now.” The Yivani inside of me is saying, “It’s nothing. It’s nothing. You’re to-do list is way more important. (Remember: You only have an impact on the physical.) Your davening means nothing.” “HaKadosh Baruch Hu, it’s something. It’s something! Make him be quiet.” And to Mr. Greek, I said, “I’m gonna rock worlds, buddy.” And that’s why I can’t bear to put this lamp away. For eight nights I moved farther and farther away from Yavan’s beliefs and closer and closer to the mezuzah, to perceiving Your reality. I finally made it to the mezuzah, and I don’t want to leave. I don’t think I’ve finished getting out this Greece stain. Tonight is Shabbos. I’ll light two candles, not eight. I want the leftover wicks to sit near my tall Shabbos candlesticks. My husband points out that it hardly looks aesthetically pleasing there with the extra leftover oil in some of the cups whose flames went out a little too early. “Fine,” I tell him, “You can throw away the wicks.” But the wick of my nefesh that was kindled this Chanukah, please Hashem don’t throw it away. Help me to keep holding on to the kedusha as I fight off this Greek in me. Please keep the menorah standing on the window sill of my new lev tahor. Living in the Zone:

Finding and Holding the Light

I

will come to the place of the lights. I will daven and I will say the brochas and I will light the lights. I will sing and say Tehillim while I sit in front of them for at least a half an hour. And if I stay longer, I might start to ask myself, What are these lights all about? What can they show me, teach me, lead me to, bring me into? Will I discover a new world there, a new way of seeing reality, a new language?

I only look at them, don’t use them for anything else. ‫אלא‬ ‫ לראותם בלבד‬- “but only to look at them” -- They’re just

there for me, for each one of us, created exclusively for each individual. They will dance their exquisite dance and play their exquisite song for me. They ask only one thing: That I be willing to allow my neshoma to be present. It sounds simple enough, but can I do it?

My Neshoma , Present

By Yaakov B ranfman

This doesn’t always happen. Some people may sit by the candles for four or five hours, watching them. They may become so relaxed that they doze off, so deeply that they remain for a period of time in a unique state of awake/sleep awareness. As they lean into the sleeping side, they are aware of infinite enjoyment as part of something very great and infinitely beautiful. As they lean towards just about to wake up, they realize that the beauty and connection they are experiencing is also in the middle of their day-to-day life: That child of theirs going through difficulties is beautiful, and his struggles are also. Their situation with parnossa is actually a door to infinite possibility. That difficult neighbor is waiting to become a good friend. Their whole life is now a process that is unfolding with more and more grace and profound opportunity.

creative people call The Zone. About 15 years ago, I’m walking in Jerusalem, in Geula. I meet someone I know, a relatively new baal teshuva, and he introduces me to an older man who is wearing a kippah that seems very new on his head. “You two should meet. Joe here is one of the most creative people in America who has written many wellknown works of fiction and written, directed, and produced many plays.” I surprise myself and ask Joe, “How do you do it?” He opens up with a big smile and says, “It’s wonderful the way it happens! Every day I go jogging for an hour and a half…” “Ah hah,” I say. You mean The Zone.” “Right! After a half an hour, just before I go into The Zone, I think of something I want to produce, and then I go into The Zone and forget all about it during my hour of peak performance, flowing effortlessly as I run. No thoughts, no plans, nothing except wordless flow, and within a few days I have the project laid out in my mind like a word-for-word script. And when

I want to find someone for financing or producing, I go back into The Zone.” And sometimes that also happens as we sit in front of the lights. We stay there with the lights and HaKadosh Boruch Hu, and then we fall into The Zone. What are we looking for in The Zone? This time around, we know one thing: We don’t want any more people to die, be wounded, or traumatized while we wait and work for Mashiach to come. We bring that desire to the lights. Sitting in front of the lights, we want to find the way to make that happen.

Asking

the

Questions

We know that very soon in history these little lights will break forth and shine throughout the universe. Until then, we ask only one thing: That no one else should die and no one else should be wounded. We bring that desire to the lights and we remain in front of them. In The Zone we watch them and we have exquisite pleasure from their dance, and from their song that we become aware of as it wells up silently in tune with their movements.

Feature We don’t forget our overwhelming desire for the world before Mashiach comes. We can’t put it away; it’s gotten too close lately. And as we go into that awake/sleep zone we state our desire again, we ask our question to ourselves and to the Ribono Shel Olam: How can we save our close ones and also our far ones from harm?

sitting in front of these special lights and from the principle of “zeh kineged zeh,” (“one opposite the other”), we must have an equally powerful light within us and around us.

The Language

of

Light

Those lights in front of me have waited for two millennia, plus one long year, for this moment to shine

me as the person who is what I would have always wanted to be, if not for the interruptions and distractions. And what’s even more amazing is that I hear what they are saying as if I actually were that person, and I respond that way, from my greater self which the Chanukah lights have helped me discover. I begin to realize that I have a role to play, and it is not limited to the role of an observer of the light. I put my attention on them and am with them in their movements and changes, aware of their every movement. I see that they are no less than a great Tzaddik who makes no move without profound meaning and effect. As I watch, I begin slowly to grasp their meaning and feel their effect on me and I know that some things have changed for me and will never be the same again, and it all feels like the most natural thing in the world. It’s the way I always was, if I would have let myself be. No regrets, just baruch Hashem, here I am now.

Listening

The answer may come in its own kind of knowingness: More Tehillim, or more Gemara, more kavana in davening, take challah, say Shir HaShirim, each to his or her own. But that’s not the real question. With a little self-examination of our actions, we could have come up with that without The Zone. The question is not what we will do, so much as how we will do it. What will we bring to that which we know we have to do, that will make it greater and more powerful than it’s ever been? The reshaim are doing that: They are breaking through the bounds of what was previously thought impossible, breaking all their mechitzas. What about us? Are there certain mechitzas that we put there which we have permission to break through? For instance, are there certain limitations we thought about ourselves and our possibilities that are man-made rather than put there by Hashem? Do we have a tremendous light within us? We are

in just this way for me. I relax with them, trusting them as I watch them do whatever they have to do. I see for the first time that each light is different. One may be more active, moving all over the place, and its neighbor may be more slow and graceful. Then I begin to see an amazing thing: As soon as I put my attention on any one of them, suddenly it changes everything! As I look at it, the slow flame may become faster, and the fast one become even faster, seemingly calling for my attention, as if lifting its arms and calling out to me, “Listen here, please!” There is a principle in physics that says that something that is being observed is being affected by the observer. In other words, a relationship is developing between myself and the lights, a very profound relationship. They speak in a way I’ve never been spoken to before. It’s as if they are speaking to the part of me that I never really thought I would be able to recognize and give life to. They speak to

for

My Answers

And my questions come back again. Even though death and pain don’t seem relevant here, I know that they still are relevant. And from here, the question gets asked again, “What can I do about…?” And then I drift back into the sleep side. And when I wake up, soon afterwards I can expect a script, telling me what to do next. Or at least I will be able to read the hints, telling me what is needed from me now. If the next move is only more questions, I know that it’s them which will lead me down the road. In this process, the questions are at least as important as the answers. If we simply present possible scenarios, it may be enough. Unfolding as they do from The Zone, it may be just what’s needed to learn what we need to do to save ourselves with Hashem's help. The one thing we know is that we don’t want any more pain. It’s enough! Helped by these special lights of Chanukah, we’ll find ways to go into The Zone. And if enough of us do it, we might just flow easily and painlessly into the next stage of Mashiach-Zeit, the time of Mashiach. We’ll never know if that can happen unless we try.

heat, having been hybridized over the years, is no longer the same food as it once was. Spelt is still original, and it’s ideal for cakes, cookies, and pastries. It bakes up moist and light. Though spelt is not for celiacs, it is more easily digestible than wheat for the rest of us. Spelt donuts for Chanukah? Why not? And if you want an easy (no kneading, rolling, shaping, decorating, filling, etc.) recipe for sufganiot, try Sfenjs (Arabic for “sponge”) which are Moroccan donuts that are crispy on the outside and spongy on the inside.

Heat oil in a pan, deep fryer, or wok. Once oil is hot, oil or wet your hands. (If wetting with water, take care not to drip water into the oil!) 7. Take a piece of dough approximately the size of an egg and make a hole in the center using your fingers. Twirl the dough to enlarge the hole to the size of a golf ball. 8. Plunge the ring of dough into hot oil. The dough will puff up. 9. Turn the rings once, until golden on both sides. Remove with a slotted spoon and allow to drain dry on paper towels. 10. Learn to Draw by Devora Benedict

LEARNING TO DRAW TIP: If you decide to color in the picture, it doesn’t matter what colors you choose. What is important is the direction you choose to color. If you start coloring the face on an angle, continue on the same angle. If you start to color straight, continue to do the whole thing straight. This way the picture will look much smoother and nicer. When you color in different directions, it can make your picture look ugly. Lots of luck!

1

The first step is to draw the base of the boy’s face which is made up of 2 parts: the upper circle is the head and the lower half circle is the jaw.

2

The boy’s head is facing the right side, so we will draw the mid-line towards the right side. Draw the eye line in the appropriate place.

Carefully draw the fingers on the right hand. It isn’t necessary to draw the fingers on the left hand because they will be covered.

Now, we add the eyeballs in black & make them sparkle. We add the nose just under the eye and the mouth above the jaw bone. Next draw the ear which is right under the eye line parallel to the top of the mouth

Now we add the neck which connects to the bottom of the ear & draw the collar. Then, we draw the kipah adding a bit of height to the head.

Add a curve to make the mouth open and draw in the hair outline.

9

3

5

4

10

This picture is complicated so pay close attention to the instructions and follow them carefully.

Finish drawing the siddur in the left hand and the candle in the right hand. Notice that although the candle is tilted, the flame is straight. Next we draw the table and the menorah. 3 closely spaced parallel blue lines outline the menorah. 3 pink lines outline the table top.

6

Now we begin to draw the body adding the shoulders and the right arm.

11

Connect the table lines to each other at the edges and connect the menorah’s lines to each other.

Serial Chapter THREE by

Chana Rubin

TO LIVE IN

JERUSALEM S

ukkos was in three days. Sara and Reuven were caught up in the holiday winds that could be felt blowing through Jerusalem. Maybe she was crazy, but it seemed to Sara that every Jewish face glowed with the holiness and purity of that past Yom Kippur. She herself had never experienced such a davening and deep connection with Hashem. The young couple were in Geula with the thousands of other Yidden preparing for the upcoming holiday.

“Here, Reuven,” she said as she handed him his shirt. Reuven took the shirt and looked at the cuffs. He looked a little too long at the cuffs.

Just this morning, Reuven climbed the tree that stood in their little chatzer. A small branch was hanging over their tiny sukkah that he had built, and it could render the sukkah invalid. As he reached the highest level of the tree, Reuven searched in his pocket for his trusty Swiss army knife. He snapped out the little saw blade and began sawing away. Sara watched from below, holding her breath. She didn’t know if she was more nervous about Reuven falling or an irate neighbor coming out to complain. He had gotten the okay from the head of the va’ad bayit, but what if someone was offended. Most of the people in their building didn’t seem to be religious and theirs was the only sukkah standing in the chatzer. Finally the branch fell and their sukkah was perfectly kosher. Next began the search in Geula for the perfect decorations. Sara and Reuven stopped at the first vendor on Malchei Yisrael, his table laden with tinsel and Santa Clauses. It looked like another holiday that they were so familiar with back in the States. Sara noticed that chassidim were buying the green and red tinsel without any pre-existing notions. The tinsel looked gay and colorful, and the price was right.

What am I, the maid? She felt the anger rise in her throat. Then, yet a third voice spoke up. This time it was a voice that came from deep within her: All he said was that he hasn’t any clean shirts. Ask him what he would like to do about it, for goodness sakes. “Reuven, can I help you with your shirts?” “It’s okay, I’ll just throw them in the machine, now. But maybe when they’re dry, maybe you could iron one for tomorrow.” “I’d love to,” replied Sara sweetly. Whew, Sara thought to herself. I passed that one. In the evening, Sara prepared a delicious tofu stew for dinner which they thoroughly enjoyed. They actually had found tofu and rice cakes at the American health food store on Yaffo. The owner spoke their language and stocked all the New York Upper West Side staples they needed, like freshly ground peanut butter, vitamin C, and the like. By ten o’clock the shirts were finally dry. Sara pulled out the ironing board and iron and began to iron Reuven’s shirt. She felt it was a holy job and wanted only to please him. She worked a long time on it while Reuven sat at the table going over the laws of Sukkos. When she finished, Sara thought the shirt looked beautiful.

TO LIVE IN

JERUSALEM

At the next seller, Sara picked out a colorful Baruch HaBa sign and a poster of the Kotel. They found beautiful orangecolored date clusters and a branch of pomegranates. After a falafel at Shlomo’s, the couple made their way to the bus with their purchases, exhausted from the day’s activities. All Sara wanted to do was take a nap, but Reuven said, “I don’t have any clean shirts left, Sara.”

Hmmmm, Sara thought. Reuven just made a statement. He has no clean shirts. Her mind was slowly digesting this fact. She was awash with a wave of guilt and inadequacy. I should have kept up with the laundry. Now my husband has no shirts. I am a bad wife. Sara felt like crying. Then another voice rang out. What does he want from me? Let him take care of his own shirts.

December 19, 2014

“Here, Reuven,” she said as she handed him his shirt.

Reuven took the shirt and looked at the cuffs. He looked a little too long at the cuffs. Sara was not mistaken. He wasn’t happy. She didn’t even give him a chance to say anything. She felt the tears well up in her eyes. “That’s it,” she exclaimed, a little too loudly. “That’s the last shirt of yours I’m ironing!” “But, Sara, it’s great. It’s just the cuff. I’m very particular with the cuffs,” Reuven admitted.

“Fine. The shirts go out from now on. Better you get angry at the laundry guy then me.” Sara thought, Am I crazy or is he? To be continued

CHANUKAH TOURS Part 2

Opposite the Gofna foothills is an Arab village called El Jib, which was once the home of the Givonim mentioned in Sefer Yehoshua. When the five Emorite kings heard about the peace treaty that the Givonim had made with Yehoshua, they declared war on them. When the enemy fled westward, toward Beit Horon, Hashem caused large rocks to rain down upon them. More Emorites were killed from these falling rocks than from the battle with Yehoshua. During this battle, Yehoshua prayed that “the sun should stand still upon Givon and the moon in the Valley of Ayalon.” Yehoshua’s prayer was answered and the sun remained in the same position for twenty-four hours while the five kings were captured (see Yehoshua ch. 9-10). On the opposite side of the building, we have a terrific view of Yerushalyim and can actually see how the city has spread across the mountaintops. The prophet foretold that before the Moshiach’s arrival, Yerushalyim will be “inhabited without walls for the multitude of men and cattle within” (Zecharia2:8). May we be privileged to see - bimheira beyameinu - the ultimate fulfillment of that prophecy. Bet Horon Continue north to the new Modi’in highway where you can see the mountains belonging to the tribe of Binyamin and the settlement of Beit Horon. Driving through the settlement you can see a steep incline from the road down into the valley below. The Gemara (in Sanhedrin) describes two camel caravans meeting on the steep incline of Bet Horon, and points out that one of the caravans must turn to the side to allow the other to pass and prevent injury. There is a breathtaking view. One of the major battles in the Chashmonean revolt took place at the Bet Horon pass. Looking toward the coastal plain, it’s possible to imagine the hundreds of Greek soldiers marching up the narrow mountain passes. Yehuda reassured his men that Hashem would help them since they were fighting to be able to live as Torah-observant Jews. After hearing these encouraging words, the Maccabee soldiers swept down from Bet Horon and ambushed Seron and his army, killing eight hundred Greek soldiers before forcing them to turn and flee. Modi’in To your left is the modern city of Modi’in, which is built on or near the site of the original village. It’s interesting to note that most of the villages and towns in this region have names associated with the story of Chanuka: Lapid (a torch), Chashmonaim, Mattityahu, Modi’im, Mavo Modi’in and Maccabim-Reut. Next we approach the gravestones. (Thieves, who assumed they would find treasures buried together with the bodies, emptied many of the graves.) Bnei Darom, a religious moshav, grows olives and produces olive oil. Experience the olive tree growing and picking as well as a film of how olive oil is produced. They have a modern olive-oil factory. Afterward, the children are given an opportunity to use the reconstructed olive oil press. There are also tractor rides. Radar Hill-site of a modern-day battle. During the Six Day War, the Harel brigade lost several tanks and jeeps during the fierce battles to capture this strategic position. These are the tanks and jeeps that you see scattered through the picnic ground. Children can climb into the tanks and jeeps while you enjoy the magnificent view

ELE T N IE L C D E M E E T S E R U O MESSAGE TO Recently, drivers from competing taxi companies have been distributing flyers warning the public about Bar Ilan’s special offer – no extra charges for ordering taxis by phone or for third passengers. The flyers claim that any passenger who calls a taxi and takes advantage of the discounts offered by our company is supporting, so to speak, “stealing from the drivers.” The flyers were also circulating a letter dated 12 Kislev 5769 (December 9, 2008) and presenting it as a recent document in order to ruin our name. The perpetrators are using these tactics and bringing all kinds of accusations in order to pressure the management of the Bar Ilan Taxi Service to stop the special offer. Therefore, we are informing the public that we will continue to work for the public’s benefit in spite of everything and that anyone who orders a taxi from Bar Ilan by phone will not pay an extra telephone fee or an extra fee for a third passenger–

permanently! And this is not encouraging “stealing from the drivers” or harming them in any way. On the contrary, whoever calls a taxi from Bar Ilan’s office is increasing the parnassa of the company and the drivers. All of Bar Ilan’s drivers, who faithfully service the community, were notified three months prior to the offer going into effect. The Bar Ilan Taxi Service Is financing a large portion of this offer. Drivers not wishing to participate were and are able to leave our company. Bar Ilan Taxi Service is not forcing any driver to give discounts that he does not want to. Just as we cancelled the fee for ordering taxis by telephone several years ago, and other taxi companies followed suit, we hope that now, too, especially with the security situation here in Jerusalem, other companies will follow our lead and cancel the charge for third passengers. This would benefit the public, the taxi companies, and the drivers.

Wishing all of Jerusalem’s residents and visitors, much success, siyata d’shmaya and pleasant journeys,
