Adults have similar intense emotions when returning to their loved ones, though they are usually more subdued than children about letting those feelings show. You can see some of the most beautiful scenes unfold between parents and children at the Arrivals Terminal at Ben Gurion Airport. Once the plane has landed, passengers are busy dealing with customs and luggage behind the closed doors, while their welcoming parties wait impatiently behind the closed gates. Even the most pragmatic individuals among those waiting, people who rarely feel tempted to make a frivolous purchase, may find themselves wanting to buy one of those funny hot air balloons. When the doors open, everyone presses forward with hearts pounding to catch a first glimpse of the arrivals as they come, one by one, into the reception area. I have been privy to these emotion-packed reunions on a number of occasions and felt jubilant for each new arrival who came home

to their loved ones and to Eretz Yisrael.

Imagine that you’ve been separated from your child much longer than several months. Imagine that you haven’t seen your child for over 20 years, and what’s more, you thought you would never see him again. What would be your emotional state when you saw him standing before you, alive and well? The words “joy” and “happiness” are pale expressions of what you would be feeling. In last week’s parsha, Yaakov Avinu is reunited with his son, Yosef, after mourning for him for 22 years. The last time Yaakov saw Yosef was when he was a 17 year old teenager, and now standing before him, he sees a man who has preserved his purity and holiness in the midst of the most immoral society the world had ever seen. By gazing at his face, Yaakov can see that Yosef is not only alive but he is still Yosef HaTzaddik—which makes his happiness as a father complete. May our separations from our loved ones be short-- and for only good reasons, and may our reunions always be joyful. Have a beautiful Shabbos,

we are asked to maintain our

full emunah and bitachon while at the same time engaging with the world in a reasonable and responsible manner.

I would like to thank Y. Frankel for sharing this beautiful story how Reb Shimshon Pincus, zatzal advised his friend not to sue the doctors for neglecting to properly diagnose his child. Being involved in the suing process might have inadvertently cause the parents to, chas v’sholom, attribute their child’s demise to the doctors rather than to Hashem. However I respectfully disagree with using this story as a proof that it is inappropriate for Klal Yisrael to respond to the Aron Sofer tragedy of this summer by suggesting certain safety measures for the future in the hope of preventing similar tragedies (for example, not wearing black clothing during hikes, or taking along cell phones). Of course, as Yidden we know ‫ודבלמ דוע ןיא‬, and that nothing happens in this world unless Hashem signs on it; however, we also have an obligation to do our hishtadlus to the fullest extent. I would suggest that in the case of suing the doctors, Reb Shimshon, zatzal, understood that it was only a financial gain your friend was talking about, while the process of suing would cause him to ruminate on the doctor’s accountability and thus it might lead him to forget for a moment Who is running the world. Of course this financial gain wouldn’t be worth the lessening of his emunah in any way. One might argue that focusing on safety precautions as a response to a tragedy might also cause one to lose sight of Hashem’s involvement; however in this regard we really have no choice since we are obligated to focus on safety as a part of our hishtadlus.

I would suppose that if your friend actually knew something specific that the doctors overlooked which would be helpful for parents to know in case they find themselves, G-d forbid, in a similar situation, then his obligation might have been to actually share it regardless of how that might affect his emunah. Bitachon and hishtadlus are a kind of a paradox, yet as Yidden we are asked to maintain our full emunah and bitachon while at the same time engaging with the world in a reasonable and responsible manner. -C.G. Weinberger, Yerushalayim In last week’s Inbox, Y. Frankel wrote about a tragedy that involved a doctor who was on duty in the emergency room, who was not sued for the reasons that Rav Pinkus, zatzal, explained. The doctor can still receive a letter from the parents who lost their baby to meningitis that says: "Our Rav advised us not to sue you, lest we think it is your fault our daughter died, and it was not a decree from Hashem. But you were the shaliach because of your negligence, and we beg you, in the merit of our daughter, that these symptoms of meningitis never be misdiagnosed again, and that future lives be saved by your vigilance to properly diagnose this illness." With tefillos that Hashem send healing to all His children. -A concerned reader in Jerusalem Correction: last week’s “Menora, Stay” was a fictional piece based on a shiur “Chanuka-We Matter” by Ms. Chevi Garfinkel which can be found on Torahanytime.com

YOU NEVER KNOW...

I

remember that time well. I had recently hung up my shingle to consult professionally, and while I had been doing this kind of thing for a long time, it was now “official.” This was about to be the very first time I would be quoted in the business media for my expertise. I remember well the reporter’s name (and its unusual spelling), as well as the name of the publication. I was sweating while we spoke on the phone, and doing my best to make a good impression. While I knew that the information I was sharing was valuable, inside, I felt unworthy of being quoted. This was a publication that was read by some of the most prominent businesspeople in New York. And, after the interview, I was hyped. Baruch Hashem, it had gone well, and I looked forward to being mobbed with new clients. Then the article came out—and I got my first phone call. “I knew it!” I exclaimed joyfully. I thought, This is my big breakthrough into a whole new level of business success. On the phone was the “night cleaner” of a law firm. He had read the paper on the lawyer’s desk at his place of employment, and he wanted some business advice about starting a niche tour company which arranged for tours in South American countries. (In case you are wondering, he couldn’t afford to pay much either.) My friends, that was the ONLY call that I got from that media mention. These days, when I’m mentioned in an article, I don’t even think for a minute that I’ll “be getting business out of it.” It’s just a matter of doing my hishtadlus. When you advertise, you are trying to do one or two of the following: l) Create awareness that your company exists; and 2) Get a potential client to take an action at this moment, based on what they see. Both of the above are traditional advertising goals: branding (awareness and positioning) and direct response (getting the customer to emerge from their cocoon and comfort zone, and pick up the phone right now to order flowers for the shvigger.) Then, there is Public Relations. When you speak to the media, you don’t control exactly what they will print. I was once interviewed for a three page article in Israel HaYom, the biggest Israeli daily paper, and they wrote in the article that I came to the interview with an iPhone. I don’t have one! But go argue with what’s printed. Then again, if someone is reading that kind of paper, they probably don’t see anything wrong with having one anyway. So while you don’t control the outcome (since it’s not paid for), when your interests and the media interests happen to be on the same side, a business can grow significantly because an article will do much more for the business strategically then advertising.

When you see a print advertisement, you are fully aware that this was paid for. The company could have opened yesterday and you might just be the very first person to “risk” doing business with them. There are ways around this like using credibility seals and a careful positioning to highlight what you do have— past experience, family history in the industry, satisfaction guarantees, and others. But one of the most powerful ones is media mentions, because people know that if the media mentioned you and did some research to make sure you are real, they can trust you too. Interestingly, getting the first few media placements is the hardest—because no one really wants to take a risk on an unknown. But once you have two or three, it becomes MUCH easier to pack them on. Proper public relations runs hand-in-hand with a good ad campaign. When you do place an ad, people “know” the company is real, and the ad has a much easier job of doing it’s selling. It also keeps your business in their mind’s eye when they need your product or service; they have a “sixth sense” that you are the right person to turn to. In my case, that interview and its publication gave me a tremendous boost of self-confidence that even without a university degree, I could with Hashem’s help, become very successful in my chosen career. And while it didn’t really give me much financially, it did give me credibility, my first LinkedIn connection to a journalist, and entry into a whole new world. Oh, and one more thing. The reporter was so impressed with the insights that several weeks (or was it months?) later, I got an email from a Citigroup Executive wanting to know how we could work together on a new private project. That’s a connection for my business that I only made in the merit of my making a good impression on the reporter, and it had nothing to do with the published interview at all. So remember, you just keep on doing your hishtadlus. In the end, it’s all from Above!

A

couple of months ago, a mother brought her three

year old daughter in to see me. She told me, “She has chronic strep throat. She’s been on and off antibiotics for virtually all her life and I’d like to get rid of it for once and for all.” I asked her for more details, and she told me that every time her daughter came down with a cold, she would take a strep culture, and it would come out positive, so she was taking antibiotics every few weeks. “Does she complain of throat pain?” I asked her. “Not usually,” she responded. “Do her tonsils appear red, inflamed or covered with pus?” “I don’t know, we never really checked.” “Well let’s have a look right now.” I inspected her daughter’s tonsils and they looked normal. I told her that a positive strep test does not necessarily indicate a genuine strep infection, especially in the absence of the above symptoms. If I would culture 20 symptom-less people right now, some of them will probably test positive for strep throat. Many people are carrying strep bacteria, without it making them sick. And it may never cause any symptoms. Although the little girl was testing positive for strep, she did not have any symptoms associated with strep infection. Her symptoms were probably caused by a virus, and the strep found was not related to her current state. I told her mother that I suspected that this child was not suffering from chronic strep throat at all; just chronic overdiagnosis of strep, and lots of unnecessary antibiotics. I treated the child and told the mother that once the cold passed, as long as no symptoms of tonsillitis developed (very sore throat, painful swallowing, swollen, red tonsils with discharge or white patches…) there was no need to even get a culture. I also suggested some minor dietary changes to boost her daughter’s immune function and prevent her from catching even non-strep infections. A few months later, I got a call from this same woman. “How’s your daughter?” I inquired. She was fine, and she hadn’t experienced another strep “alarm” since her last appointment. This mother just wanted to bring in her son who was under the weather. I was happy that my instincts were correct and the story ended well. Antibiotics are often prescribed too hastily and broadly.

December 31, 2014

T h e r e is little awareness of the potential harm of antibiotics. I wish it were as simple as they make it seem: “Bad bacteria invade, and make us ill. Antibiotics kill the disease and restore us to good health.” Antibiotics don’t just kill bad bacteria; they kill all non-resistant strains. (And with the continued overuse of antibiotics, resistant strains will soon outnumber nonresistant.) Our first line of immune defense is in the gut; in the form of stomach acids and good bacteria. Wiping out our good gut flora with antibiotics can actually make us more prone to infection since the good bacteria keep the bad bacteria in check.

The

long-term effects of antibiotics are

often even worse than the short term.

Antibiotics are one of the major causes of obesity today. Did you know that they give antibiotics to farm animals not just to kill infection, but to fatten them up? Infections rarely erupt spontaneously. They are usually the result of an unhealthy bodily environment. For example: when scientists tested corn-fed cows, their guts were found to be riddled with unhealthy E. coli bacteria. When these cows were fed grass for a few weeks, the E. coli vanished! A positive change in diet allowed the cows to restore proper gut bacteria. This is something antibiotics cannot do. Sadly, over the years I have seen many people who are suffering from chronic illness because of antibiotic overuse. The worst cases are usually those who took antibiotics the longest. Lots of people come to me to fix the damage that was done after years of health debilitating treatments. Many of my patients have been disillusioned by the damage done to them because of conventional medicine. They tell me heart wrenching stories of how their health deteriorated further with each intervention. After years like this, they begin to pursue natural alternatives.

A word of caution: Treat yourself naturally before taking years of harmful medication! It is so much easier for me to help cure a patient who does not have a lifelong history of pharmaceutical treatment. This is one of the reasons that little children are so much more responsive; their systems are much less encumbered.

Forgiving the Little Faults by

A former avreich neighbor told me that he did not understand why his chassan class teacher scheduled a one hour lesson on the subject of “What If your Wife is Late?” He thought it was a ridiculous topic to discuss. That was because, from his mindset, it was clear what a husband’s reaction should be. If your wife is late to an occasion or appointment, wait calmly and try to help her along. Be sensitive to her. Fortunately, he was blessed not to be aware of the fact, or be able to comprehend that even religious men and women can be condescending and harshly criticize and blame their precious spouse for the “sin” of being late.

Zeldy Steinmetz Marcus

I

t was Tuesday morning, exactly one week after the tragic massacre in our Har Nof shul. I had been overwhelmed all week with deep pain and sadness.

That Tuesday morning I had a very important appointment in the area of Tel Aviv at noontime. For those who identify with me, I seriously think my siblings and I have a real difficulty in being on time. It seems to run in the genes. For two days before the appointment, I prepared all my paperwork, checked the bus schedules, bus stops, prepared some food, etc. so that I could be ready on time to make the 10 am bus at the Central Bus Station. The next bus was not until 2 pm. I set my alarm for an early hour with plenty of time to spare and no pressure.

I wake up that same Tuesday. I look at my alarm clock. It says 10 am-- how did this happen?! I was so prepared! Did my alarm ring? Could it be that I didn’t hear it? My first reaction was about to be: Here I am late again. But long ago, I stopped being hard on myself, even though others do not comprehend. I knew that I could have chosen to feel failure, shame, and fear of explaining my lateness. It all of a sudden hit me! Hey, last week all the men from shul, who overslept or came late to shul for the minyan, were hugged and blessed by their friends and relatives. “What a neis that you were not in shul on time!” I said to myself, Does it have to take a murderous, terrorist attack to forgive people who wake up late, people who are late, people who forget to go to the dry cleaners, children who forget to take their lunches to school, people who lose their

December 31, 2014

On a tangent, I do not recommend a person to aim or purposely be late. It is a challenge that as a parent of adult children, I still work on my avodas hamidos to try to change for the better.

key or misplace a passport before a trip, a spouse or child who drips their coffee, spills the milk or even accidentally breaks a plate? It suddenly dawned on me that it’s okay to unintentionally and occasionally be late or forgetful. One of the consequences of the Har Nof terror attack is that many of us are looking inwards for ways to improve. We are taking upon ourselves bein adam l’chavero, kedushas Shabbos, and tefilla. My suggestion to the tzibur is a simple daily act. Can we please speak gently and respectfully to our spouses, children, and friends when they make a minor mistake? Instead of insulting and strongly rebuking a child for being late to school, can we please watch our words and tone of voice to maturely relate our displeasure and try to work together with the child for a solution so that it does not happen again?

Back to my story. With all my preparations to be ready on time that Tuesday morning, I was baffled why I did not hear the very loud ring of my alarm clock. After a little research, I realized that I had set the time but forgot to push the “on” button. That morning when I woke up late for my appointment, I did not allow myself “to go there.” I told myself that just the week before, for those men in the minyan, being late was a great stroke of siyata d’shmaya and something to celebrate. On a daily basis, I suggest we practice forgiving ourselves and forgiving our close ones for the small “crimes” they unintentionally commit—like misplacing the keys or the passports, breaking a dish, or the age-old “misdemeanor” of spilling the milk. May this kind and understanding act, too, be a source of zechuyot for Am Yisrael. May Hashem be menachem and watch over all the families of the kedoshim, the residents of Har Nof, and all of Klal Yisrael. Using Miles from the Main Airlines By R euven Mandel

H

ere’s a summary of the best ways to fly to Europe using miles from the main airlines. If you have questions on any specific airlines, send me an email and I’ll try to help.

I’ll also try to explain which airlines allow a stop-over or open-jaw on the ticket. (An open jaw is when you fly into city X, and depart from city Y, or vice versa. For example, flying from Tel Aviv -Paris, and returning from London to Tel Aviv would be an example of an open-jaw.) I don’t recommend using miles for the trip to Europe, because the rates are expensive, and there are a few budget airlines with low prices (such as Wizz, EasyJet, and Pegasus). And Biz class is usually just a blocked-out middle seat, so unless you’re certain you’re receiving a real premium product, it may not be worthwhile. Often, if you sell your miles or points, the money you receive for them would cover the cost of the ticket. If you’re interested in selling your points, please contact me. The mileage amounts below are for round trip tickets, and for economy and business class flights. I have included 4 main airlines, but obviously, many other programs exist.

United Airlines (UA)

Notes:

Mileage required: 50k/90k

1.

Partner Airlines close to Europe:Turkish, Brussels, Lufthansa, Egyptian, Austrian, SAS, Air Lingus, LOT, Swiss

DL only allows round-trip tickets but this will change in January, as might the number of miles needed.

2.

They may charge extra fees on flights originating in TLV.

3.

Their website doesn’t show all partners. You’ll need to check elsewhere.

Notes: 1.

UA allows one-ways as well as a stop-over and two open-jaws on round-trips. In addition, you can do multiple layovers, which are stops in a city of less than 24 hours.

2.

Their website won’t search for all partners. You will have to search on other websites for those airlines.

3.

UA's website is otherwise very powerful for searching for award tickets, but if you need a complicated itinerary, you'll need to search each leg separately, and perhaps call up UA to book it.

American Airlines (AA)

British Airways (BA) Mileage Required: BA doesn’t charge a set price. Rather, they charge based on the distance flows. For example, flights to Vienna, Berlin, Munich, and Dusseldorf are 10k each way if you find a direct flight. Madrid and London are 12.5k each way. And Biz class is double the cost of economy. Partner Airlines close to Europe: Same as AA, but not with El Al.

Mileage required: 40k/60k

Notes:

Partner Airlines close to Europe: Air Berlin, Niki, Iberia, British Airways, FinnAir, Royal Jordanian, S7, Qatar, Etihad

1.

If you fly on Niki or Air Berlin, then you won’t pay extra fees (besides for the regular government taxes). However, if you fly on BA or Iberia, then the fees can reach a few hundred dollars.

2.

Their website is great for checking award availability on many partner airlines. Much better than the AA website.

3.

Every additional leg that is added onto a flight increases the cost of the flight.

Notes: 1.

AA books tickets as one way tickets, and doesn’t allow stop-overs.

2.

If you fly British Airways or Iberia, you’ll be paying high fuel surcharges, although Iberia will be lower.

3.

Their website doesn’t show all partners, so you have to call up AA to book tickets on those airlines.

Delta (DL) Mileage required: 50k/70k Partner Airlines close to Europe: Air France, Alitalia, KLM, Air Europa, Aeroflot, Czech

December 31, 2014

El Al (LY): This is more complicated as they charge a different price for different cities, and add on a charge on top of it. Additionally, they are devaluing their miles in February 2015, and this will be discussed in an upcoming article.

Raising Awareness About Eating Disorders Eating Disorders- A Deadly Disease

In recent years, the Orthodox community has awoken to the urgency of treating eating disorders. Eating disorders, primarily anorexia and bulimia, have one of the highest mortality rates of any psychological disorder. Though most people suffering from eating disorders are female, an estimated 10-15% are male. It is crucial to note that in addition to the victim directly suffering with the disorder, their entire family is impacted. The inevitable battles around food and the pain of watching a loved one descend into the dark and deadly pit of an eating disorder leave life-long emotional scars.

Bulimia is a cycle of eating followed by purging (normally intentionally throwing up or overuse of laxatives). The Renfrew Center lists the following as some of the warning signs of someone suffering with bulimia. She:

Orthodox Jews are far from immune to eating disorders. Factors such as genetics, communal pressures, exposure to the general media as well as other psychological illnesses (such as depression or obsessive compulsive disorder) make us just as susceptible to eating disorders as the general population. Orthodox Jews from all segments of the community are suffering from eating disorders. Their families and friends are suffering with them. Often they are unaware of how to help them escape from this pit.

the

Warning Signs

Denial of the problem and reluctance to get treatment threatens lives. Therefore, it is critically important for everyone to know the warning signs of eating disorders. According to the Renfrew Center (one of the leading eating disorders treatment centers in the United States), anorexia is essentially “self-imposed starvation.” The following are some of the warning signs that someone is suffering with anorexia. She: • is thin and keeps getting thinner, losing 15% or more below her medically ideal body weight. • continues to diet or restrict foods even though she is not overweight. • has a distorted body image—feels fat no matter how thin she is. • is preoccupied with food, calories, nutrition, or cooking. • denies that she is hungry. • exercises obsessively. • weighs herself frequently. • complains about feeling bloated or nauseated even when she eats normal—or less than normal—quantities of food. December 31, 2014

• reacts to emotional stress by overeating. • feels guilty or ashamed about eating. • is obsessively concerned about weight, body image, and shape. • attempts to adhere to diets, but generally fails. • uses the bathroom frequently after meals. • feels out of control. • has menstrual irregularities. • has swollen glands. • may be at a normal weight for her age and height. • exhibits impulsive behavior, moodiness, and depression. In Israel, eating disorders are also prevalent in all segments of the community. However, there are sadly limited options for intensive treatment. In addition, there are almost no options for treatment within an Orthodox setting. Though poskim have made clear that treatment for eating disorders qualifies as pikuach nefesh, it is far less comfortable for Orthodox Jews to have intensive treatment in anything other than a Torah-based setting.

and an art therapist. Parents are involved in weekly family therapy. This is a critical part of treatment. As one parent wrote, “They are teaching us how to bring out the best in [our daughter] and how to deal with our other children. They are actually the support beam of our family unit.” The clinical staff works closely with patients’ family doctors and (if applicable) psychiatrists. English speaking therapists are available for immigrants and students whose treatment needs to be in English. It is a warm, home-like environment where everyone works together to make sure that each and every person receives the help they need. The fact that the clinical staff is highly trained, totally dedicated, and Orthodox contributes to its effectiveness in helping Orthodox patients from similar backgrounds. Over the past year, Mercaz Female has successfully helped all its patients to be able to return to school or work, and to avoid the need for more intensive, inpatient treatment.

Mercaz Female has a partnership with Professor Moriah Golan’s Shahaf Institute in Tel Aviv, one of the most successful eating disorders treatment centers in Israel. Though the Shahaf Institute is not Orthodox, Mercaz Female’s staff recognizes their wealth of knowledge and experience. They learn from Shahaf’s staff eight hours monthly, and apply what they’ve learned to Mercaz Female’s setting.

A Personal Plea

My oldest daughter suffered from an eating disorder for a number of years. With Hashem’s help and the proper treatment, she not only recovered, she speaks and writes publicly (including on Mercaz Female’s website, www.mercazfemale.org) about her experiences and the importance of getting help. She wrote: At age 14, I was knocking on death's door, yet through the efforts of an extraordinary medical and psychological team, I survived. Twenty percent of all individuals diagnosed with anorexia perish, and I was lucky enough to live. Hashem chose to save that one little girl struggling to live in a world of emaciated models, embellished diet techniques, and one hundred calorie meal plans. I cannot stress enough the importance of eating disorder treatment. Without it, I would certainly not be alive today. Article pertaines to males as well as females. My personal plea comes from experience. If you or a loved one suffer from an eating disorder, it is critical to seek help. Eating disorders do not go away by themselves. Intensive treatment is required to break the chains of this deadly disorder. It is truly a matter of pikuach nefesh. For more information, www.mercazfemale.org, or email shmuel@ mercazfemale.org

HOW TO GAIN

THE MOST OUT OF YOUR

THERAPY by

W

hen many of us think of therapy, what usually comes to mind is the stereotypical image of a therapist sitting in a big arm chair (legs crossed with a pen and pad in hand) next to someone lying on a couch. Once considered taboo, therapy has become more and more accepted in our community. While some people are only beginning to understand the possible benefits that therapy may offer, many others have already experienced the relief they have felt from working with a therapist. Be it with a spouse or mentor, the decision to enter therapy is one that should be considered carefully. As important as the decision to enter therapy is, it is even more imperative that you know how to gain the most from the therapy itself.

Therapy

is a

Process

We have all been to a doctor before. A common misconception is that therapy is similar to an appointment with your family physician. Upon a visit to the doctor’s office, we are asked what the problem is for which we have come to seek the doctor’s expertise. Our response is to give the doctor a list of symptoms that ail us (usually ending with us telling the doctor what we think we have). The doctor offers his advice for what we should do, and depending on the circumstances, may feel it necessary to prescribe medication. If we listen to the doctor, it could be another year or more until we come down with something and have to visit again. This common procedure has unfortunately tainted many a perception of what therapy is about. We live in a society which has become accustomed to instant soups and computers

which automatically do our shopping and pay our bills. This pushbutton society has made waiting for results difficult for us; we want instantaneous solutions to issues that we have been honing and perfecting for years. People will often ask during a first session in therapy for something they can do, or even a list of things, so they can free themselves of what is bothering them. They are surprised when such a list is not forthcoming. The expectation that there is a quick fix to their problem is irrational, and unfortunately “adding hot water and closing the lid for a couple of minutes” will just not cut it to alleviate the feelings caused by our issues. The most important thing to understand is that therapy is a process. It is not a “you” and “me, but rather “we” working together toward a goal. It is a journey with the therapist acting as a guide along the way to help recognize and allocate the resources and resiliencies that will help move you in the right direction. It is our nature to focus and harp on the negative things that go on for and around us, recalling them instantly and constantly. On the other hand, ironically, the good things that happen are usually quickly forgotten and are identified only with careful prodding. While it is important and healthy to investigate the problems that we come into therapy for, it is equally as important to realize the positive things going on in our lives. Once again, it is the therapy process and relationship that allows for the discovery of these positive behaviors which we can then learn to integrate into other areas of our lives.

W hy Did You Come Therapy?

for

Many enter therapy, not of their own volition, but rather due to the coaxing (or forcing) of someone else. That someone else could be a rosh yeshiva, mashgiach, parent, or friend who feels there is something amiss, an issue they understand to be the culprit hindering the person’s ability to function at their maximum potential. Suggestions are well-meaning, but the client must ask themselves what they want out of therapy. Working on something you feel is important will give you the motivation to utilize your sessions to their fullest.

Goal S etting

Goals in therapy should be concrete and clearly defined. People often have goals that are broad and unclear. An example is someone who says “I want to have a better relationship with my spouse,” or “I want to be more social.” Better relationships and more sociability are vague terms; what is better for my relationship may not be better for yours, and my idea of social may differ from yours. What does a person who is more social or has a better relationship with their spouse do differently? Wanting to be able to talk to your colleagues or friends other than in the work place or while learning in yeshiva, are goals which are better defined. Vague goals are worse than not having goals at all. They lead people to believe that they are headed in the right direction only to realize over time, that they never even knew where they were headed in the first place. Clear-cut parameters take away the ambiguity and allow us to keep an eye out for corresponding signs.

Goals should be expressed in a positive form. Statements such as “I don’t want substances to control me,” or “I don’t want to be so nervous,” although true, are negative in nature. Of course we all understand that being excessively nervous is a bad behavior that we want to cease. The question remains, however: What positive behavior would you rather be exhibiting instead? When you won’t be so nervous, how will that change your life, and if substances are not a part of your life, what will that mean for you? Describe your goals as something you’d like to see happen, rather than something you would want to stop. It also helps to define goals in ways which are observable. We should “not bite off more than we can chew,” is an age old adage whose underlying principle is that we should take more manageable goals upon ourselves. Once we “chew” our goal, we are ready to move on to the next one. As with all good ideas, this idea is found in chazal, and I once heard it beautifully explained by Rabbi Yissochar Frand. The Torah tells us to look at our tzitzis to remind ourselves of all of the mitzvahs, so that we will fulfill them. The Gemara (Chulin 89a) says: Rabbi Meir asks why is the tcheiles (that we use in tzitzis) different than all other colors? The Gemara answers that tcheiles looks like the ocean, which looks like the sky, which looks like a sapphire, and a sapphire looks like the Kisei Hakovod. Why don’t we just say that we should look at the tcheiles which looks like the Kiseh Hakovod? Why all the steps? The answer is that it is imperative that we take small steps in order to reach the goal. Once we plant our foot on one step, we can more confidently move on to the next in order to reach our ultimate goal. When embarking on a trip to a place that is less familiar, we often ask for signs or landmarks along the way to help us know that we are traveling in the right direction. When we finally see the first sign, we are comforted to know that we are indeed traveling on the right path to our destination. The same idea is helpful in therapy as well. Goals in therapy, while

sometimes grand, may be broken down into smaller steps. The small steps act as a way to know that we are moving in the right direction. To use the same example as before, it is important to break down the goal of having a better relationship with one’s spouse into smaller steps. It is important to know what the first sign will be that things are moving in the right direction. Once clearly stated, the client will be able to recognize when they have reached that observable step which allows them to move on to the next.

Taking Responsibility

We often find ourselves reacting to the actions of those around us. Life would be dandy if everyone surrounding us acted as we wanted them to. Unfortunately though, the people walking among us are not figures on a chess board for us to move at will. On more than one occasion, a person has come into therapy stating that they want to change, but that it is dependent on someone else. “I want to, but she…” There’s a saying that goes: “When you point a finger at someone, three fingers are pointing back at you.” We can’t expect that someone else will change, we can be, and are only responsible for our own actions. What we have to do is cease our blame game and take responsibility for our own change. If we have already decided to take advantage of the relief that therapy can benefit us, why not take full advantage of the process. Clients come into therapy with hopes of making changes in their lives. The butterfly effect is a theory which is based on a metaphor that a butterfly flapping its wings in one place can cause a hurricane at a later time, even in a distant place. It is important to realize that every step forward is an extreme accomplishment, and that the ripple effects of every small change in therapy can be of great significance in other parts of our lives now and in the future. Serial Chapter FOUR by

Chana Rubin

TO LIVE IN

JERUSALEM S

“I was afraid that a terrorist might come and blow up the El Al office where you were sitting, G-d forbid, and I would lose you.”

ara noticed that, for some strange reason, time seemed to go faster in Jerusalem than she had ever experienced before. Reuven explained that it had to do with Jerusalem being the center of the universe and that the circle of time goes much faster in the middle than at the circumference. The holidays flew by. Even though it had only been two days ago, Simchat Torah seemed like a dream.

Winter was approaching. When the winds blew and the rains pelted their sliding glass doors overlooking the street, their apartment was colder inside than the weather outside. Sara could never get warm. They had one little blow heater which they kept aimed at the dining room table. When they sat down to eat, they would dress for dinner wearing their down jackets and gloves. Sara would bring hot food to the table and it would be cold in a few minutes. They thought all Israelis lived this way. That night, it got so cold in their apartment that they decided to walk to the King David Hotel, where it might be warm. The couple found a couch in the corner, ordered a pot of tea and wrote blue aerograms to their family and friends, filling both sides of the paper with the details of their new found life in Jerusalem. “How did we get here?” Reuven wondered aloud. “You mean in Jerusalem?” Sara queried. “Yeah. Here. Together. Living this life! Growing and learning. I mean how did it all happen?” Reuven looked at Sara. “I think it must be that Hashem knocks on every Jewish person’s door. No matter where he is – even in the Amazon jungles or in a desert in the middle of Africa. And that person has a choice whether to answer the knock or not. Whether to open the door, even a little crack. Or not.

“And then what?” Sara wanted to know. “And then what?” Reuven echoed. “And then Hashem will show us what He wants. I don’t have a five-year plan. But I’m sure He does.” “That makes me feel calmer. And it also makes me feel scared,” confessed Sara. “What makes you feel scared?” asked Reuven. “Well, shouldn’t one of us have a plan? I want to rely on you, Reuven. I suppose most of the time I’m just full of fear. Reuven turned to Sara, “Let’s make a list of all your fears.” He took out a pen and paper ready to write. “You’re making fun of me, Reuven.” Sara looked hurt. “I’m not making fun. I am completely serious. If you have so many fears running around in your head, let’s try to answer each one. That way it will seem more manageable.” Sara looked doubtful. But she began; “Okay. Remember when we were in New York the week of our sheva brachot, and we went to Rockefeller Center to get our tickets to come here? We hadn’t been separated since the wedding. When I went down the stairs to the ladies' room, I feared that a terrorist might come and blow up the El Al office where you were sitting, G-d forbid, and I would lose you.” Tears sprang up unexpectedly in Sara eyes. Reuven looked at Sara with love.

TO LIVE IN “Do you know, Sara, I had that same fear at that same exact moment,” Reuven revealed.

Sara interrupted, “Wait, I’m not finished with the list! I’m afraid that we’re going to get divorced.” Reuven kept writing and added that one to the list.

JERUSALEM

“It is amazing to me,” continued Sara, “that in high school, I had no awareness of Israel. And Judaism was the un-coolest thing in the world. If you had told me then, that in a few years time I would be sitting with my husband in the middle of Jerusalem, drinking tea and believing I was the luckiest person in the universe, I would have said, ‘Impossible! You’re crazy!’” Reuven called the waiter and paid the bill. They strolled home through the beautiful tree-lined streets of Talbieh and Rehavia and rested a while on a bench near their apartment. “Reuven, how long do you think we can live here?” Sara asked. “Well, we have the money from our wedding and what your father gave us before we left. Maybe that could take us through the year.”

“And I’m afraid we won’t be able to have children, G-d forbid. I’m afraid my parents are going to die. I’m afraid we’ll have to go back to America. I’m afraid my sisters could die. I’m afraid that Hashem doesn’t love me…”

“Whoa, whoa, wait a minute,” Reuven said as he stopped writing. “What do mean Hashem doesn’t love you? How do you know how Hashem ‘feels’? He made you. He gives you life. He brought us together. You have no evidence that Hashem doesn’t love you, Sara. “In fact, if you ask me, it’s just the opposite. Maybe what you’re saying is we need to build our emunah. Yeshiva starts next week. Let’s put this list in the drawer and take it out after we start learning. " To be continued

Touring in Israel: Kever Rochel, Hevron & its Surroundings By Yeshaya

and

R ivkah Jacobs

TERRIFIC TOURS / UNBEATABLE HOTEL RATES

Touring in Israel can be exciting, educational, and enjoyable. You can walk in the footsteps of our forefathers as you traverse the length and breath of this fascinating country. The Kever of our ancestor –Imma Rochel is always a special place to daven, whether for a refuah shlaima from an illness, or a shidduch for marriage or any other request. It behooves the Jewish nation of Israel to return to daven there as is stated, “ The children will return to their borders” (‘Veshavu banim l’gvulam’.) There are always many women petitioners at the Kever as well as men learning Torah. Cohanim can daven on the outside and there is a parking area next to the Kever. One can get to the site in a private car or bus as there is a wall surrounding the area, but for Hevron one should always be protected by a bullet proof vehicle as well as an armed guard. Joining our Artzeinu Tours trip to Hevron and Kever Rochel is an experience you will remember for many years to come. At Gush Etzion, there is a stirring audio-visual presentation. You

can watch how the first Jewish pioneers, through back-breaking

work and undaunted spirit, settled the land, only to be uprooted. Experience the authentic bunker where our Jewish brethren hid out until they were overcome by the arabs. Two generations later, their grandchildren returned to rebuild their homeland as you will witness on a second screen, where almost everyone is brought to tears.

Ma’aras HaMachpela-the cave of machpela in Hevron, south of Yerushalayim, is the burial site of the three avos- Avraham Avinu, Yitzhok Avinu and Ya'acov Avinu, as well as three of the four emahos Sara Emainu, Rivkah Emainu, and Leah Emainu. Walking inside the Cave gives one a special feeling of personal attachment to the ancient past. Davening there instills us with gratitude to the Al-Mighty for enabling us to render our heartfelt tefilos in such a makom Kadosh. Visit the Avraham Avinu Shul and hear the breath- taking story of how this shul received its name. Sit in the seats that people have been occupying for hundreds of years. View little children playing in the streets.

NEW IN ISRAEL – LIEBER’S SPRINKLES

Infomercial

Every good cook or baker wants their creations to look as good as they taste. For a long time, the pretty sprinkles which decorate baked goods in America were not available in Israel. It was an item that many people brought back with them after trips and saved only for the most special occasions. Another alternative was to try to decorate cakes on your own which besides being very time consuming, sometimes looked good and sometimes not so good. Now with the variety of sprinkles in all colors and shapes that Leiber’s is importing to Israel, all your cakes and confections can begin to smile Decorating your creations together with your children is a fun-filled activity that upgrades every cake. Cake decorating was never so easy or so much fun! Lieber’s sprinkles can be purchased at Osher Ad at attractive prices.

ORIT MARTIN “Ladders to Heaven” Jerusalem Theater

12 December 2014 - 10 January 2015 Opening night: 20 December 2014 20:30 Orit’s Martin paintings provide a new dimension to Jewish contemporary art. The paintings address the relationships and linkages among opposites in our experience: the transitory and the eternal, the spiritual and the concrete, the tangible and the abstract, Heaven and earth, the digital pixel and the stroke of the brush, the figurative and the abstract. Ms. Martin draws inspiration for her art from the Kabbalah, from the Zohar, from Chasidic texts, and from Jewish motifs. Her art, however, has a universal character. Orit’s art offers to the viewers a new visual expression of spiritual and mystic concepts such as enlightenment, reflection, introspection and meditation. Her art deals with existential topics such as the connection between soul and body, man’s place in the universe, and man’s facing the world and the Creator.

Infomercial

The concept of man’s image appears repeatedly in the paintings as a stylized silhouette symbolizing the human experience. There is ample use of light, specially of light beams from high that express the connection between different spheres.

In Jewish art there has always been a concern to endow spiritual concepts with a concrete expression, and in this difficulty Orit Martin perceives a creative challenge. The challenge is to address wholly abstract matters using tangible means without falling into well-worn traditional clichés. The art offers the viewer primeval visual elements, such as a bridge, or a circle of light, a vortex, or characters to induce in the consciousness of the viewer an intimate and abstract experience. Jewish art, as it is expressed in Orit Martin’s drawings, breaks through the boundaries of Judaica ornamental art towards a stand of self reflection and advanced awareness. The painting combine mixed techniques. Orit is using a unique combination of digital techniques with brush strokes of acrylic colors, in order to create effects of layers of colors reflecting on each other, and producing streams of lights and a feeling of hovering. The digitally processed art is printed on quality canvas, over which the artist continues painting with acrylic colors.

TIPS FOR MAINTAINING YOUR SMILE

28

from Dr. B. Mashiach, Director – Jerusalem’s Top Smile Clinic

create acid in the mouth which increases the chances of tooth decay.

It’s important to have you teeth checked and get x-rays taken at least once a year. Discovering little problems before they become bigger problems is a key factor in maintaining dental health. Of course, personal oral hygiene including brushing, flossing and other care as needed daily are essential.

Refraining from acidic drinks is also good for your teeth. This includes lemon juice and carbonated drinks. The acid can damage your tooth enamel.

For gum protection, it is imperative to visit a dental hygienist every 3 – 6 months. Having plaque build-up cleaned on a regular basis will help preserve your teeth. Certain foods are harmful and can promote decay in your mouth. This includes carbohydrates, sticky foods, some fruits and especially dried fruits. These foods

Sometimes it is necessary to fill in natural cracks and crevices in your teeth to prevent germs from building up and causing damage. Ask your dentist about sealing these spaces. Top Smile Jerusalem Clinic 18 Elazar Ha'modai, German Colony 02-5723000
