Rebounding From Addiction Former NBA Player To Speak At Manheim Central By Chelsea Peifer
“I will make good decisions and support others. I will be true to myself. I will stand up to drugs and alcohol. I will celebrate life. I am good enough. Purple. Proud.” Those are the words of the Project Purple Pledge, which 15 Manheim Central High School (MCHS) students have already taken. MCHS teacher Edward Herbert said those students are now planning events throughout the school year to continually reinforce the message of Project Purple and
encourage more students to take the pledge. The Project Purple initiative got its start when Chris Herren, a former professional basketball player, spoke at a high school in 2011 sharing his story about reaching his lifelong dream to play in the NBA only to lose it all to a struggle with drug and alcohol addiction. Herren, who had played for the Denver Nuggets and Boston Celtics, has been drug-free and alcohol-free since 2008 and now shares his story of abuse and recovery publicly through The Herren Project, an effort to educate youths about the dangers of substance abuse and to help them to make positive life choices. See Project Purple pg 7

Ryan Reflects On Battle Of Mogadishu By Chelsea Peifer
National Day Of Prayer For Mental Health Service Planned By Ann Mead Ash
This is only Gwen Didden’s second year helping to organize the Lancaster County National Day of Prayer for Mental Illness Recovery and Understanding, but as director of Faith Friendship Ministries in Mountville, Didden fully understands the significance of the event to those dealing with mental health issues. “The (prayer service) is important because it brings hope,” said Didden. “This (event) couples hope and prayer (to offer) spiritual guidance (that) is so important for people who are managing mental illness or living with people who are dealing with mental illness.” See Prayer Service pg 2
Gwen Didden (left) and Cathi Myers (right) are two of the organizers of the National Day of Prayer for Mental Illness Recovery and Understanding service that will be held at Calvary Church on Oct. 11. No Longer Alone Ministries and Faith Friendship Ministries are sponsoring the event with assistance from HandiVangelism Ministries.
The Battle of Mogadishu took place 25 years ago, but the details remain fresh in the mind of retired United States Army Maj. Timothy Ryan. “Not a day goes by that I don’t think about being over there with my guys or something that happened over there,” said Ryan. “I remember it so vividly.” The Battle of Mogadishu was fought on October 3 and 4 in 1993 as various United States military elite special operations units were in Mogadishu, Somalia, to destabilize the government and bring humanitarian aid, along with the support of UNOSOM II (United Nations Operation in Somalia). Ultimately the goal of the mission was accomplished, but things became deadly during the Battle of Mogadishu. Details of the events were later published in the 1999 book “Black Hawk Down: A Story of Modern See Mogadishu pg 14
