Stitching With a Purpose

Group Creates Handmade Projects to Support Neighbors in Need

In October of 2022, the Stitches craft group at Moving Communities to Christ (MCC) Church in Morgantown changed its named to MCC Stitches and switched the location of its monthly meetings to the Village Library of Morgantown. The move was part of an effort to

have community members join the group and work on sewing projects that benefit people in need.

MCC Stitches, which meets at the library on the fourth Saturday of the month from 9 a.m. to noon, with the exception of July, August and December, is continuing its efforts under the guidance of group leaders Kara Campbell, Brenda

Pearsall and Becky Minarik. Campbell reported that in 2025, MCC Stitches made donations to several local organizations, including Refresh Berks, soap sacks and washcloths; Hope Rescue Mission, hats and scarves; Lighthouse Women & Children’s Center, hats, scarves, blankets and washcloths; Gift of Life, lap blankets; Shar’s

Hands, soap sacks, washcloths, hats and scarves; Opportunity House, blankets; and Safe Berks, blankets and hats.

The group also contributed items to a street mission in York. “One of our members has a friend in York who has a coat rack where she puts out scarves and hats for the homeless or anyone who walks by and

A Valentine’s lasagna dinner and a sale of fastnachts are two “foodraisers” being planned by the Hay Creek Valley Historical Association (HCVHA) at Historic Joanna Furnace, 1250 Furnace Road, Geigertown.

The lasagna dinner will be offered on Thursday, Feb. 12. For the takeout meal, there will be a choice of homemade meat lasagna, with marinara or Alfredo sauce; cheese lasagna; and gluten-free meat lasagna. The dinner will include a pan of lasagna and salad,

as well as bread for the non-gluten-free dinners.

All the dinners will be sold cold with heating instructions included. Lasagna dinners will include a homemade chocolate dessert. “We plan to have other foods available to purchase on the day of our sale, including chocolate-covered strawberries and homemade soup,” said Mark Zerr, HCVHA executive director. Items will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Takeout lasagna meals must be ordered in advance at www.haycreek.org. The order deadline is Monday, Feb. 9.

Homeschoolers Sing for Joy in Local Choral Group

“There are no auditions. If you don’t know how to sing, you will learn,” said Kirsten Echegoyen, who founded Sing for Joy, a choral group that includes homeschooled students age 8 and older from Berks, Chester and Montgomery counties.

The group meets for two sessions each school year. Rehearsals are held at Brick Lane Community Church in Elverson from September through December, culminating in a December concert. The first rehearsal of 2026 was held on Jan. 14. Rehearsals will continue on Wednesdays in preparation for a concert at the church in April.

While registration for this session is closed, interested youngsters will be able to register for the fall season in September.

Sing for Joy concerts feature sacred music with piano

accompaniment. “I try to do a variety - some is more classical and some is more on the jazzy side,” noted Echegoyen. “We also do music in different languages - Latin, German, Spanish and Swahili. We do one or two foreign language pieces per concert. For the spring concert, there will be one piece in Latin and one in Swahili.”

Echegoyen has both a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in music education. She also taught music for seven years in a public school before she began homeschooling her children. “The choral group allows (students) to fulfill their musical part of the homeschool curriculum, plus they get the fun of doing a concert,” she said.

at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary at Brick Lane Community Church, 52 S. Brick Lane, Elverson. Admission is free of charge.

Those interested in joining the choral group are asked to pay a fee. Discounts are offered to siblings, plus prospective members can give the group a try before joining.

Both boys and girls are encouraged to participate. “The majority are girls. Right now, we have 16 members, and four are boys,” noted Echegoyen. “Alumni are allowed to come and participate for free.”

rienced kids they become better singers and musicians,” Echegoyen stated. “There is definitely musical growth.”

She said that the name of the group was chosen by her father. “I have a family of musicians, and I sent an email to my brothers and parents and listed a few names, and my dad came up with ‘Sing for Joy’ because a lot of the songs use that exact phrase,” Echegoyen said, adding that the mission statement of the group is “to glorify God through excellence in choral music.”

This year’s concert, which is open to the public, will be held on Thursday, April 16,

She said that it is enjoyable to watch the children, especially new members, learn and improve as the rehearsal season progresses. “Some kids who come already are musicians, so between what I teach them and the expe-

pasture during the colder months.

The webinar will offer strategies to help horse owners and caretakers keep their animals healthy, comfortable, and performing at their best throughout the winter season. Participants will learn about shelter needs, appropriate nutrition, safe exercise practices in low temperatures, and how to recognize when conditions may be too harsh.

The webinar is free, but registration is required by the start of the session. A link to the recorded webinar will be emailed to registrants within 10 business days after the live event. Participants can access the recording for six months from the event date.

needs them,” Campbell noted.

Club members, including Campbell and Cindy Schmeltz, deliver the handmade items. “I specifically go to an organization called Shar’s Hands, a shelter for women and children,” Campbell said.

“Cindy goes to the Opportunity House (and other locations), and she brings hats, lap blankets, scarves and gloves. MCC does a street mission, and Cindy goes out in the city of Reading, where they give clothing to the homeless. She does a majority of the distributions.”

MCC Stitches is free and open to people of all ages who knit or crochet or who want to learn. All supplies are included, or sewers may bring their own projects. “We provide all the tools you need to learn, and if the person wants to try knitting or crocheting, they can take their yarn and hook or

knitting needles home and continue practicing,” Campbell stated. “I also have coloring (pages) and diamond art if you don’t crochet or knit,” she added.

Light snacks are provided, and each gathering begins with a Christian devotional reading that relates to a craft or fiber arts.

“Sometimes we have moms and kids. The youngest child (who attended) was 8 years old. Child care is not provided, but if they have really small children, the library has a playroom,” Campbell noted.

Those who cannot attend meetings may participate by donating items they have created at home. “We have people that participate ‘virtually.’ They will make stuff and drop it off on the Saturday we meet. Some people want to be helpful and can’t make the

meetings,” said Campbell. Those who have items or yarn to donate may contact Campbell to arrange pickup.

Campbell said that she is pleased with the growth of the group and its ability to serve others. Attendees enjoy the social aspect as well. “It was the best decision (to move the group). We wanted to make things that actually got into people’s hands,” she shared. “Hanging out is nice, too. Everyone makes friends. We laugh, we have snacks, we talk and learn from each other. It’s a good community.”

“Foodraisers”

Takeout dinners can be picked up between noon and 5 p.m. on Feb. 12.

The HCVHA will also hold a sale of homemade fastnachts on Tuesday, Feb. 17. Fastnachts can be purchased by the half or full dozen and can be eaten fresh or can be frozen to eat at a later time.

Fastnachts must be ordered in advance at the aforementioned website. The order deadline is Feb. 12. Orders can be picked up on Feb. 17 between noon and 5 p.m.

Fastnachts are a Pennsylvania Dutch fried dough dessert similar to doughnuts. They are traditionally served on Shrove Tuesday, the day before Lent starts.

The square-shaped fastnachts made by HCVHA volunteers are of the yeastraised potato variety. “Hay Creek volunteers arrive at 4:30 a.m. on the day of the sale to mix the ingredients, allow the dough to rise, then hand-roll and cut the fastnachts before frying,” Zerr said. “They are then cooled and packaged for pickup.”
