There’s Something Cooking at Ephrata Public Library

he cooking program at the Ephrata Public Library (EPL) teaches a critical life skill and important life lessons. But on a more symbolic level, the educational classes represent the Ephrata library’s continuing growth as a community institution.

There was a time, seemingly not that long ago, when eating was forbidden in libraries or at least

“Libraries are more than just four walls and the books that line them,” said Helen Taylor, who’s been EPL’s program manager for five years. “Libraries have evolved. Now we deal more with programs. Libraries are not quiet or monotonous anymore. We’re more of community hubs. It’s hard to keep up with us. We’re constantly innovating and changing.”

EPL conducts five cooking programs for both children and

The Arc Lancaster Lebanon’s goal is to empower and improve the lives of residents with intellectual and developmental disabilities and autism. The Arc executes its mission and achieves its goals by advocating for and educating the families

of individuals with disabilities.

It’s both a grassroots and holistic approach that focuses on the importance of home and relationships.

“Where I really see the empowerment is through education and being a resource center for people who are gaining knowledge on being a part of the community,”

Readers Can Take a Book, Share a Book at New Little Free Library

The Little Free Library (LFL) initiative started in 2009 in Hudson, Wis., when Todd Bol built a small book-sharing box in the shape of a one-room schoolhouse as a tribute to his late mother, who was a teacher and loved to read.

Today, book-sharing boxes in all shapes and sizes can be found worldwide and are managed by stewards, who build and install the boxes and then maintain them by assuring that they are filled with books for both children and adults. Many add other small items to share as well, including small toys or bookmarks.

Locally, the newest box, with the motto of “Take a book, share a book,” has been built and installed by Autumn and Tommy Rinck of Narvon, who are calling their box “The Backroad Bookshelf” because of its rural location. Along with homemade bookmarks, the box also contains a jar of dog treats because of the couple’s love of dogs. Those who visit the box are invited to sign their name in a guestbook if they choose.

Autumn explained that she has a great love of books and reading and wanted to share books with others. “I like anything from romance to thrillers,” she said, noting that she frequently visited LFLs throughout the area. “I always went to Little Free Libraries, and I always wanted to make one. We moved here two years ago. We were from (New) Jersey, and

said Abby Morris, executive director of The Arc. “That’s what our hope is. We at The Arc feel that every person deserves the same rights that you and I have. We get to choose what we eat and where we want to work. Everyone in America deserves to have those rights. Sometimes the most vulnerable part of the population isn’t seen from that light. We want to champion for them.”

Headquartered at 116 W. Airport Road, Suite A, Lititz, The Arc Lancaster Lebanon is open Mondays through Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Fridays by appointment. The Arc Lancaster Lebanon, which conducts support events at its office and out in the community, employs resources from The Arc of Pennsylvania and The Arc of the United States and collaborates with similar local service agencies.

“I want people to know we’re here,” said Morris. “We want to help, and we’re a free service. People should not be navigating (disabilities) alone. We provide advocacy and family support for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and autism. We want to be the voice of people with disabilities.”

Overseen by a board of directors, The Arc sponsors happenings, activities and programs like sen -

sory-sensitive community events, an Arc Angel giving tree, seasonal parties and a sensory-friendly Easter egg hunt. The Arc Lancaster Lebanon also conducts educational and support groups for siblings and parents of family members with disabilities.

“We want to empower young people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and autism to lead a full and independent life of their choice,” said Morris. “That looks different for everybody. We have an advocate and a family support specialist who work individually with each person. They come alongside their families to make sure their needs are being met.”

The Arc Lancaster Lebanon is currently serving more than 100 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities across all of its programs. They reside in Lancaster and Lebanon counties and range from elementary school children to adults in their 60s.

“They go to public schools, they go to your places of worship, they’re your next-door neighbors,” said Morris. “Those are all the people we are working with. We help parents who are fearful their children are not receiving the proper schooling. It’s 78-year-olds who are still taking care of their children. It’s a whole spectrum.”

The Arc Lancaster Lebanon employs four full-time workers and two part-timers. The local nonprofit also benefits from the assistance of volunteers at community events.

The Arc is funded through contracts with Lancaster and Lebanon counties, a membership program, grants, personal and private donations and fundraising efforts.

“I feel very passionate about meeting and talking to (state) legislators about why the work we’re doing with people with disabilities should be in the budget,” said Morris. “We want to work with legislators and educate them. We’re wanting to bring people together and continue to get the message out.”

The Arc of the United States was founded in the 1950s, and the local branch was established in Lancaster in 1978. The Arc Lancaster Lebanon is one of 33 chapters in Pennsylvania.

“When our most recent executive director, Maureen (Westcott), retired last year, she knew The Arc needed to go in a new direction,” said Morris. “That’s what I’ve been tasked to do. I want to build up our development and enrich the great work that was already being done.”

4-H Club Sets Reorganizational Meeting

The Ephrata-Cocalico 4-H Community Club will hold its reorganizational meeting on Thursday, Jan. 29, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Ephrata Fair office, 19 S. State St., Ephrata. Youths must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

The club will offer a variety of sewing and textile projects and will meet at the fair office on Thursdays or Saturdays. Exact meeting dates will be announced at a later date. A team of leaders will teach the necessary skills to complete the 4-H-approved projects and prepare each member for regional and county competitions. For more information, email Elaine Sensenig at elainesensenig23@gmail.com.

All 4-H programs are available to all youths ages 8 to 18 before Jan. 1 of the current year. Persons with disabilities who anticipate needing accommodations or who have questions about physical access may contact Laura Rodgers at 717-394-6851.

Administered in Pennsylvania by Penn State Extension, 4-H is a community of more than 6 million young people across America learning leadership, citizenship, and life skills. To find a local program, visit https://extension .psu.edu/4-H. For more information on joining 4-H in Lancaster County, contact Rodgers at the aforementioned phone number or LancasterExt@psu.edu.

Fairmount Sets Quilting Days

Fairmount will hold its annual Quilting Days from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 7; Tuesday, Feb. 10; and Wednesday, Feb. 11, in the Farm Crest Community Room at 1100 Farm Crest Drive, Ephrata.

Attendees can connect with fellow quilters, share their passion

for quilting, and create quilts for a good cause. Multiple quilts will be set up and ready for stitching. Volunteers will work together to create beautiful quilts that will be sold at Fairmount’s annual Benefit Auction and Barbecue in September, with proceeds supporting

adults - Story Snackers for preschoolers and their parents; I Can Cook, designed for elementary students ages 6 to 9 with a focus on nutrition and completing recipes; Teen Cuisine, which provides instruction on main dishes, the preparation of meats and the importance of food temperatures; Adult Cooking Class, which incorporates the assistance of outside restaurant experts for the preparation of sandwiches and salads; and Cookbook Club, whose members take recipes home, prepare dishes and then share them with class members.

In addition, EPL hosts cooking camps for students during the summer months. Periodically, EPL also sponsors Taco Tuesdays, cotton candy art and pancake art.

All classes related to the cooking programs are conducted in EPL’s educational kitchen, located at 550 S. Reading Road, Ephrata.

“Cooking and working in the kitchen is something we all need,” said Taylor. “We have a lot of students who want a snack when they get home from school. It’s about independence and gaining confidence. It’s also learning about recipes. A lot of these skills are going to be used for the rest of (students’) lives. For some, it may be a career.

It’s also about self-esteem; for them, projects can be accomplishments. We’re mixing in a lot of life lessons.”

Most of EPL’s cooking programs, which are free and open to the public, are conducted monthly, while some are held less often. The age-appropriate classes, which are limited to 10 to 12 participants because of space, focus on different dishes and separate aspects of working in a kitchen each time.

In 2025, EPL cooking program staged 36 classes and served 432 participants.

“I come into classes as an observer and watch the start of classes,” said Taylor. “My favorite thing is just seeing the joy that comes from all the students, just watching their interactions and seeing how happy their accomplishments make them. There’s joy being spread and there’s determination, and you can see that in all ages; that’s what makes me happy. We’re teaching, we’re directing, but we’re also spreading joy.”

From time to time, EPL’s cooking program incorporates the use of its Charlie Cart Mobile Kitchen to take its educational classes out into the community. Purchased with funds from a grant, the Charlie Cart is a kitchen on

wheels, equipped with a power source, a sink, appliances, utensils, bowls, plates and knives.

“Cooking also promotes basic literacy because you’re reading recipes,” said Taylor. “It’s also basic-level STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). It’s civic and social literacy because you need teamwork. You could say it’s financial literacy because we look at costs involved with making dishes. We incorporate all of these literacies, which are all so important. Cooking is fun and we love to eat, but there are so many other skills involved with it.”

EPL conducts a number of programs for adults and children in addition to its cooking classes, including game nights, camps, clubs and special events. Between January and November of 2025, EPL hosted 721 live in-house programs and welcomed 8,248 visitors.

“Sometimes, people are surprised by the programs we offer,” said Taylor. “Every day I surprise someone at the library, even our regulars, because we offer so much.”

EPL is open Mondays through Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For additional information, go to www.ephratapublic library.org.

Although LFL kits are available to order, Autumn and Tommy built their own wooden box and painted it blue. “We built it from scratch. We went and bought the materials, and we built it in the garage over a couple of weekends,” said Tommy, adding, “We even decorated it for Christmas.” The box still remains lit at night with small twinkle lights.

In order to anchor the box, the couple placed its support beam into a bucket filled with cement rather than placing it into the ground.

“(We used) a five-gallon bucket, and we stuck it in the planter and put stone in the bottom of the planter with dirt on top,” Autumn explained.

“That way if we move, we can take it with us,” Tommy noted.

Some of the LFLs the couple frequently visits are Ellyn Honey’s LFL in Mohnton, Captain’s Bookshelf LFL in Mohnton and the one at Hopewell Lake in Elverson. “We were in Alabama for vacation, and

we visited a few down there,” Tommy added.

“We go around to different little libraries and drop books off. I have an Instagram where I put pictures of them and information about them,” noted Autumn.

“The Little Free Library has a website and app, and they have a map, so you can see where all the little libraries are.”

Autumn’s Instagram photos and videos can be found @ racewifereads.

Since its installation, many neighbors have utilized the box, including children. “We have a couple of kids on our street, and their parents told me that each day they come and take a book and at bedtime the parents read it to them. They bring it back the next day and take another book,” said Autumn.

They are also intrigued by the different ways that people construct and decorate their
